The Duggar’s [Michelle (43) and Jim Bob (44)] have had yet another child.
They welcomed their 19th child (9th daughter) into the world Thursday night. Weighing in at 1 pound 6 ounces, Josie Brooklyn was about 4 months premature.
Reports say that Josie is in stable condition in the NICU at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock.

Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar, of TLC’s “18 Kids and Counting”, have welcomed their 19th child, Josie Brooklyn. Josie wasn’t due until March and weighs a mere 1 lb. 6oz. I’m no doctor. I don’t even know basic first aid for that matter, but it seems safe to say this child’s health is uncertain.

It’s safe to say the Duggars have an extreme position on birth control. According to their personal family website, after the birth of their first child, they conceived their second pregnancy while Michelle was on birth control. That pregnancy ended in a miscarriage, which their doctor told them may have been cause by conceiving while on the pill. I have no idea is that’s true. At that point they decided to be open to as many children as God would bless them with and abandoned all birth control methods, including a calendar.

The Duggar’s lifestyle, for lack of a better word, doesn’t appeal to most of us no matter how conservative, but I’ve never talked to anyone with a soul that didn’t consider them a loving, tight knit family and fine parents. It was never the number of children they parented that concerned me. It was the number of children that Michelle bore. Each pregnancy was higher risk than the last. I was concerned for Michelle Duggar’s health. Her family needs her.

I never really considered the health of any of these babies being at risk. I don’t know why. When I read about Josie’s premature birth this morning I felt instantly sad. So sad I’m kind of surprised it’s still on my mind. I don’t know these people. I’m also bracing myself to be mad. Maybe it’s because I’ve had my own parenting decisions questioned, and I can’t imagine dealing with such serious challenges in front of the whole world.

I guess what I’m saying is if I hear of anyone f***ing with Michelle Duggar, well I don’t know what I’ll do. I’ll probably get super mad and say the meanest possible thing I can think of to you. If you manage to get in my house and say it, I’ll hit ‘cha. Not that it’s remotely my place, but I ask on her behalf that before you say ”I told you so” or make a crack about her stretched out womb (or worse), you’ll put yourself in her shoes for a moment. Maybe even hit your knees. Imagine what is probably going through her head, and her heart, this morning as she contemplates the future of her innocent, cherished and very vulnerable child.

My wife and I just returned from an appointment with our OB to check on the progress of our son Brendan who is due to arrive in January. As an expectant father and producer of therapeutic music programs I am a huge believer in the positive benefits of exposing our son to music in utero and beyond.

So, I just opened my email and sitting in my Inbox is a study forwarded to me by my friend and collaborator Don Campbell that demonstrates that Mozart soothes premature babies. Now, this is no revelation for those of us in the field, but it it gratifying to see researchers continue to study the effects of music on newborns, at a time when our auditory system is most vulnerable to the onslaught of noise we are faced with as we exit the birth canal and leave the warmth and comfort of the fluid filled womb.

The Israeli study demonstrated that healthy, premature infants who listened to Mozart had a 10-13 % reduction in resting energy expenditure compared to those with no music exposure. The study did not evaluate other music and has not been replicated but the findings are interesting and support further scientific exploration. This study will be published in the January print issue of the journal Pediatrics. Read the story in the online edition of U.S. News & World Report.

So, when Brendan arrives will there be music to greet him? The answer is an unequivocal YES!! What will he be listening to? Well, to be honest the award-winning Music for Babies collection that I co-produced with my dear friend Richard Lawrence a few years ago. Newborn or otherwise, I can assure you Sleepy Baby and Peaceful Baby will ease the stress of your day.

Reports of the economic recovery say the United States has stabilized and headed up, but if jobs are missing, then there really is no recovery. Personal incomes drive the economy. Loans are a function of income, a person’s cash flow. If the unemployment rate isn’t improving, then the economy isn’t improving. There’s a direct relationship. You can ignore all of the other economic statistics, but pay close attention to this one. Everything else is secondary to this vital data point.

Also, the typical American consumer comprises 2/3 of the U.S. economy. The federal government and economists are anxious for this spending machine to start up again. Their goal is to reassure the citizenry that the economic environment is returning to normal. However, they are not recognizing that the rational decision for people is to actually conserve resources (save money) until the future looks brighter.

To fix the situation, the housing market needs to be fixed. Banks should mark down the values of the home. The federal government should assume ownership of the houses provided that the home payments are still being made. When the housing market recovers in, perhaps 5 years, the homeowners would have the option of buying the property back.

Second, the senior bank executives, who oversaw and caused this turmoil, should be fired and sent to jail. Those executives have no incentive to fix the problem they created. While people continue to lose jobs due to their indiscretions, they are still receiving bonuses. Why? When someone owns up to this crisis, well start to see the banking crisis abate. Until then, we’re stuck with our anemic environment. It will only get better after much-needed changes have been made.

Sorry if you already follow my @koalainscotland twitter feed as I posted this yesterday there.

Just wanted to ask if you could pray for Baby Dylan. He was born 6 weeks premature, and is currently in the High Dependency Neo-Natal Unit here in Edinburgh. He’s a little fighter, and is doing well though he still has fluid on his lungs and breathing rapidly.

Always with any preemie baby there is a higher risk of mortality/morbidity, but we’re hoping Dylan will be healthy and home in time for Christmas with his Mummy, Daddy and big sister (a friend of Elastababy who is now Elasta-toddler!)

We know that Dylan’s family will really appreciate your prayers.

Thanks everyone x

This article comes to us from Full Term™, the Fetal Fibronectin Test. Utilized by hospitals and healthcare providers in office settings, this non-invasive test helps to identify the possibility of premature birth by detecting the presence of a protein known as fetal fibronectin. Read this informative article by Dr. Naylor to learn more about this test.

FDA-Approved Test Helps Women and Doctors Manage High-Risk Pregnancies

By: Dr. Scott Naylor

While the goal for pregnancy is for every baby to be born healthy and at full term, the reality is that premature birth, also known as preterm delivery, is one of the most serious obstetric problems and is the number one cause of death for newborns in the United States. Defined as delivery earlier than 37 completed weeks of gestation, preterm birth affects 1 in 8 babies born in the United States.

Premature babies have a higher incidence of lifelong health and developmental challenges, including cerebral palsy, mental retardation, chronic lung disease, and vision and hearing loss.

Given the potential grave consequences of prematurity, there is a pressing need to identify patients at increased risk to help physicians prepare for a potential preterm birth.

A new study published in the current issue of the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology found the use of fetal fibronectin (fFN) testing and cervical length testing between 22 and 32 weeks gestation more accurately identified asymptomatic women pregnant with twins who are at the highest risk of premature delivery. The fFN test is an FDA-approved, noninvasive test that provides high-risk women and their physicians with valuable information about the likelihood of premature birth.

Experts have identified certain factors that put some women at increased risk for delivering early. They include women who have had a previous preterm birth, women who are pregnant with multiples and women with certain uterine or cervical abnormalities.

The fFN test, similar to a Pap test, can be performed quickly and easily in a doctor’s office and measures the amount of fetal fibronectin—the “glue” that holds the baby in the womb—in the vagina. There are no side effects to either mom or baby, and the test can be repeated every two weeks until 35 weeks of pregnancy.

In a typical pregnancy, fetal fibronectin should be almost undetectable from weeks 22 to 35. In fact, if the test is negative (i.e. the “glue is not leaking”) a woman has a 99 percent chance of not delivering in the next 14 days. Because of this powerful degree of reassurance, this can help avoid over treatment with drugs and other medical interventions such as bed rest or hospital admission. Additionally, the reassurance of a negative test result allows women to continue their normal routines, such as working, traveling, caring for other children and socializing with friends and family.

A positive result, on the other hand, is perhaps one of the single strongest independent predictors of preterm birth. Narrowing this delivery window can help doctors better manage pregnancies and work to keep babies in the womb as long as possible. In the case of a positive test result, doctors may prescribe treatments like bed rest, drugs to relax the uterus or corticosteroids to enhance the development of the baby’s lungs. For patients who are found to be at high risk for preterm birth, every extra day in the womb makes a difference and is equivalent to 3 fewer days spent in the neonatal intensive care unit. Women for whom preterm birth is inevitable will greatly benefit from the early warning, allowing them to be close to a hospital with specialized services for premature babies.

As a perinatologist who cares for high-risk pregnant patients, I use the Fetal Fibronectin test frequently in my office for women with signs or symptoms of preterm labor, women who have had a previous preterm birth or patients who are pregnant with multiples. The test provides me with important information which helps us to avoid over treating our patients and to plan accordingly for each woman’s pregnancy. Kathleen’s story below is an example of a situation in which the test has helped give a worried mother-to-be peace of mind.

Kathleen’s Story: A happy ending

Every woman has her own unique experiences during pregnancy and some of them can be frightening. Doctors are constantly working to quell their fears and work toward the best possible outcomes. The story of Kathleen from Hermosa Beach California is no exception.

Kathleen was thrilled when she learned she was pregnant for the second time. After a normal pregnancy and the easy birth of her first born, Brandon, Kathleen and her fiancé were looking forward to bringing another child into the world. However, Kathleen recalls her emotions turning to fear when she started experiencing contractions and labor pains while in her 28th week of pregnancy.

Kathleen grew anxious thinking about the possibility of delivering a premature baby. Our office offers fetal fibronectin testing, and I suggested it to Kathleen. We were all pleased when all of Kathleen’s tests came back negative providing her with the comfort of knowing she would not go into labor within the next two weeks. For Kathleen and her fiancé, the reassurance was exactly what they needed to ease their worries during subsequent contractions. The negative results also allowed Kathleen to maintain her regular activity level, and the freedom to care for her four-year-old child at home.

Kathleen says she’s glad the test was available and she strongly recommends it. She says it is a blessing to have a better sense of when to expect (or not expect) your baby to arrive, so everyone involved can better manage the pregnancy.

Alt genital sistemdeki enfeksiyonlar

As all of us bloggers unite throughout the land, it makes me think how very different each of our lives are, yet how we all have something special in common: we’ve come here today to help those babies who can’t help themselves. In my previous post, Prematurity Awareness Month, I highlighted prematurity and how we can all help the March of Dimes fight for preemies. Today, I write for preemies; not for just one baby, but for the thousands that I have cared for in the past decade, for their families and for all preemies around the world.

Having a premature baby is very difficult for new parents. Most parents have never heard of the neonatal ICU (NICU) before and now here they are, watching their tiny newborn fight for life. Between the loud monitors and ventilators, the inability to hold their child in such a fragile state and the multiple ailments that can occur throughout hospitalization (including, but not limited to: infections, respiratory instability, apnea (cessation of breathing >20 seconds) and bradycardias (heart rate <100 beats per minute), blood transfusions, feeding intolerances) it’s no wonder why most parents feel helpless, frightened and saddened.

Although it may not seem like it initially, there are many things that you as a parent can do to help your precious angel along. Here are just a few suggestions:

–Get your rest. You will need your energy in the following days to come. Stress and lack of sleep can negatively impact your breast milk and your overall well-being.
–Whenever possible, provide breast milk for your baby. If you can’t provide it, don’t worry, there are alternatives. You can always discuss using donated breast milk from a breast milk bank with your neonatologist and lactation consultant. And if this is not an option, formula is always readily available in all units.
–In the early days in the NICU, more often than not, your newborn will not be able to tolerate too much handling. In the NICU, we encourage cluster care to allow for uninterrupted rest to help the neonate recover and conserve calories and energy. With that said, we do encourage parents to touch their newborn. The best way to do this is to gently place your clean hand on your child. Try to refrain from stroking/rubbing since this can be over stimulating.
–Once your baby is stable enough, ask your nurses and neonatologist if you can hold your baby skin-to-skin. This is called kangaroo care and has been shown to improve bonding, promote breast milk production and can possibly facilitate earlier discharge from the hospital. Don’t be discouraged if your little one does not tolerate this for the full hour. Some days are better than others. Just be mindful of your baby’s cues and once he/she has had enough, ask the nurses to kindly put your baby back to bed.
–Be your baby’s advocate and ensure every visitor (including yourself) washes their hands, is not ill and does not have open mouth lesions when visiting your child. There may be days that your baby will need extra rest and an influx of visitors can be too much.
–Bring books and read to your baby.
–As the days go on and your baby gets stronger, participate in your baby’s care whenever possible. Changing diapers, taking temperatures, holding tube feedings or breast/bottle feeding whenever possible, and giving your baby a bath are all activities which will help you feel involved in your baby’s care and prepare you for discharge.

Today, I join the March of Dimes and am Fighting for Preemies. I write for all you little angels who have been born too soon and for all you mommies and daddies who have just begun your roller coaster life in the NICU. Be strong and I hope these suggestions help you during this difficult time of your lives.

Hello Everyone

I haven’t disappeared… I’ve just been too busy outside for computer time!

This is a copy of a letter I received today trying to

spread the word

about Prematurity in this country……

Today is the release of the second annual Premature Birth Report Card, and I wanted you to hear the news from me: America receives a “D.” As a country, we are failing to give our babies the healthy start they deserve.

Your state has received its own report card. I’m afraid you’ll agree we have a long way to go. In fact, before the end of this year, more than half a million babies will be born too soon, some very sick.

It’s Prematurity Awareness Day® — the day when we’re all focused on the terrible toll of premature birth on babies and families. The report card reminds us how urgent the problem is. But with the support of people like you, we can continue to fund lifesaving research and programs.

If you haven’t already, I hope you’ll visit our Web site and join the fight for preemies.

I had a preemie. It was life changing. It was scary. It was not the ideal start for my sons life.

I had a preemie.

It was life changing. It was scary. It was not the ideal start for my sons life.

I had been on bedrest for Preterm Labor from 25 weeks. I figure I bought him 9 extra weeks, with the sacrifice of staying in bed, taking different pills and praying.

Devon was born at 34 weeks. He was 4 pounds 3 ounces.

He only had to stay in the NICU for 12 days.

It felt so much longer. But in comparison to what some preemies go through it was very little.

What can you do to help prevent prematurity?

Take care of yourself.

Eat well.

Get prenatal care.

Drink a lot of water.

Pay attention to your body and baby.

If you have more than 4 Braxton Hicks and hour, call your care provider.

If baby’s movements decrease dramatically, call your care provider.

TRUST your intuition! If you feel something is wrong, insist you be seen! (My friend pregnant with twins, suspected something was up at 25 weeks. The OB blew her off, so finally she lied and said she had some bleeding. So they had her come in and found she was 4cm dilated and they had her on bedrest in the hospital, where she was able to go a few more weeks.

Do NOT get induced before 40 weeks (unless mom or baby is at risk) So many babies that are preemies in the last few years were INDUCED! Due dates are just guesstimates. They can be off a few weeks. So if a mom gets induced at 37 weeks, she may have a 34 week gestation baby.

pre⋅ma⋅ture

 –adjective

1. Occurring, growing, or existing before the customary, correct, or assigned time; uncommonly or unexpectedly early: a premature end.
2. happening, arriving, existing, or performed before the proper, usual, or intended time.

Many times we get to a place in our life where we become frustrated with the things we do not have.

The Money.

And the Cars.

And the Clothes.
The…hoes. Sorry, I was having a Drake moment.

But yes, there are things in our life that we want, desire after, need, and no matter how much progression we make, how ready we think we are to obtain those things, they are just out of our reach.

Have you ever wondered why?

I’m smart, educated, cute, funny, pretty rational minded (depending on the day) and, as it still stands, very single. Every woman goes through this phase of “is it me? Why am I still single?” And we question who we are, the decisions we’ve made and we (as we go through a quarter life crisis around the age of 25) wonder if who we are and what we’ve accomplished is enough to attract a potential mate who does not live with his mama.

We pray, attend women’s conferences, read books on “How to Find the Right One in 30 Days”, we speed date, blind date, double date; only to end the night, weeks, months, and years, happy, but still very single.

Or…

You work 50 hour weeks. You get awards and accolades at your job. Your boss’s boss loves you and you’re well-respected around your job. You have your sights set on that corner office, but after 4 years at the job, you are still driving your college whip (a ‘91 Honda Civic), you live in an apartment, and while you have the education, experience, and know-how, you still aren’t living that life you imagined. You work hard, have great ideas, but have nothing to really “show” for it. You hope to one day be able to buy that house, car, take those trips with college buddies–you want that “next level” life you’ve always dreamt of.

Here’s the thing:

When we acquire things that we want prematurely, whether that be a meaningful relationship or a better paying job, we can end up in a very dangerous situation. Yes, we FINALLY have that wonderful man or woman we’ve been looking for, but if they came into your life too early, before you could truly resolve those issues (bag lady), can we really be equipped to love that person as they need to be loved? Or, if you get that new corner office out of season (before you knew that your mom would get sick and you’d have to take 2 months off to take care of her), wouldn’t you have rather not have the corner office (which also means greater responsibility…) until moms was better and back on her feet?

Consider this: A child that is born too early is called “premature”. While they are a blessing to their parents, and in many cases live to have happy and normal lives, their entry into the world is tumultuous, difficult, and even though their parents are glad to have them here, would have much rather to wait those few more months until that baby was ready to live on its own without the I.V.s, cords, 24-hour care, respirators, and incubators.

How much more then should we be patient to wait for those things we chase after until the ideal time?

To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven… Ecclesiastes 3:1

He has made everything beautiful in its time… Ecclesiastes 3:11

I know that whatever God does, it shall be forever… Ecclesiastes 3:14

Take it in stride when what you want or even feel that you deserve in your life is slow to come. You can’t have it yet, but you will have it. In the right time.

So the next time you are reminded of how being single sucks or someone with more experience gets a promotion, just know that everything works in your favor in the right time.

… And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to [his] purpose. Romans 8:28

On the Chase,

Premature Births and Infant Mortality Counterpoint After reading several recent articles on US prema

Premature Births and Infant Mortality Counterpoint

After reading several recent articles on US premature births and infant mortality in reference to the US health care, I decided to research the facts and data. The US ranks 33rd in the world in infant mortality, an indicator of the health of a nation.

Approximately 13 million worldwide are born premature and 56 million infants die within one year of birth, of which 1 million are premature. The US has 475,000 born premature and 27,000 infants die annually. Premature births occur when the infant is born before the completion of the 37th week of pregnancy. The question is why the US has the premature birth and infant mortality rates for a nation with advanced health care?

The following are among the factors that could increase the risk of premature birth:
