Author: Philip Tosini
Source: ezinearticles.com

Who was the best?

To be frank they were both brilliant entertainers in there own right, “Michael Jackson“, .

Elvis Presley

Elvis was a singer from the 1950’s through to the 60’s and 70’s and died at the age of 42 on 16th August 1977 at his home at Graceland of Cardiac Arrest and not a Heart Attack as was reported. Elvis left one daughter Lisa Marie aged 9. Elvis had suffered from glaucoma and water retention in the past and the effects of years of American Southern cooking and legal use of drugs prescribed by his physician, which ultimately lead to the singers death. Elvis played racquetball in the morning before he died. He returned to his home and played Unchained Melody in his living room, then he proceeded to his bedroom, so Elvis seemed to be quite fit as he was preparing for another concert tour.

Michael Jackson

Michael was a singer from the 1960’s, 70’s, 80’s, 90’s through to 2009 when he died at the age of 50 on 25th June 2009 at his home at Holmby Hills in Los Angeles, he also died of reported cardiac arrest. Michael left 3 children Prince Michael, 10; Paris Katherine, 9; and Prince Michael II, aka “Blanket,” 5. Michael suffered for years from a skin disorder vitiligo, a rare disease that discolors the face and body, plus he had many cosmetic surgery operations at least 20, to change his face as he was unhappy with his features especially his nose, probably as a result from physical and mental abuse in his childhood. Jackson probably died as a result of all the stress and anguish of the years of accusations and resulting court cases over the last 10-15 years. Michael was apparently fighting fit two days before his death, as he was preparing to play a 50 date concert at the O2 Arena in London, England. His body most likely couldn’t take the strain of the rehearsals.

Difference between Cardiac Arrest and Heart Attack

A heart attack is when the heart becomes irregular and there is circulation problems. A cardiac arrest is when the heart stops beating and happens without warning. Though they are both deadly, a cardiac arrest needs treatment within minutes if not seconds, where as a heart attack can come on more slowly, as long as the patient is made comfortable they can survive long enough for help to arrive, but I must STRESS this is not always the case as every situation is different.

Summary

The difference between the two singers, you can’t really judge as Elvis Presley started it all,he was the original music rebel, as John Lennon said, “Michael Jackson“, ‘If it wasn’t for Elvis Presley, there would be no Beatles” he was known as the King of Rock’n’ Roll, a title given to him by his fans.

Michael Jackson is what started the video era, even today’s music videos do NOT have a patch on any of his videos, even the ones from the 1970’s. The King of Pop is the self-proclaimed title MJ gave himself.

All in all they both were geniuses in there own genre giving fans and the World music they loved, movements and dances that are and still original, which nobody can imitate, even though they spawned thousands of imitators, tribute acts, impersonators (imps) or whatever you want to call them. There will NEVER be another Elvis Presley or Michael Jackson.

If you enjoy contemporary art, you’re spoiled for choice. A wide range of works are currently on display in museums around the world, and your biggest problem will be finding the time to see them all.

The ROM has Vanity Fair Portraits until January 3, 2010. I’m planning a trip before Christmas.

The AGO is showing Edward Steichen’s fashion photography and the exhibit ends on the same day.

The National Art Gallery in Ottawa is showing the gorgeous urban photographs of Gabor Szilasi [featured above] until January 17.

There are many Tim Burton worshippers out there, and they are likely congregating at the MoMA’s Tim Burton exhibit.

I’m sad to be missing out on this one: London’s National Portrait Gallery is currently showing The 60s Exposed: Beatles to Bowie.

And it gets worse. On the other side of the Thames, the Tate Modern is showing Pop Life with works by Koons, Hirst and Murakimi.

And for those who book their travel plans early, the National Portrait Gallery in Washington is dedicating an exhibition to Elvis Presley. It starts January 8, 2010.

(For Elvis, Edith Piaf, and All Whom Paris and New York Have Swallowed Whole)

11-23-09 by Mark Nielsen

Some days I feel about as important as a single telephone pole–

That one! There. See it?

Covered in kudzu vines,

Just one in a string of a thousand

across flat, hot, desolate Mississippi.

How important is it to fix a broken bicycle spoke?

Does a lynchpin ever know it is the lynchpin?

Who ever said that by doing something I love,

and doing it well,

The world would come running to hear it?

The world does not need me.

In fact, the world never knows what it needs.

Until it finds it.

At which point it immediately spoils it.

And the journey to glory

Est un voyage court à nulle part.

And as for talent:

Are you listening to these words,

Or just watching the way my hair falls across my forehead?

What profiteth it for a man

to talk real purty?

Or for a woman to belt out a sad song for her father?

Or for a child set adrift to paint a starry night?

The ruts in this road are deep, though.

It will take more strength than I have

On my own, in these arthritic hands,

To turn right up ahead when we see the road home.

(That is, if I’m not asleep at the wheel when it comes).

On the other hand,

at least I can’t turn around, either.

So take the wheel, St. Therese.

Where are we going?

As an Elvis Presley fan (yes it’s true) I recently discovered the music of PJ Proby (pictured on the left circa 1960). I was searching for one of the greatest Elvis songs of all-time, Fun in Acapulco, and came across a video that contained two versions of the song. The first is a “demo” cut by Proby. The second is the official version that was later released by Elvis. If you listen to both versions (which are contained in the same video below) I think you’ll agree that Proby does a very remarkable job. He may very well be the first and greatest Elvis impersonator there ever was.

Proby also portrayed Elvis Presley in a theatrical production of Elvis – The Musical, winning a Best Musical of the Year award in 1977.

I’m in the mood for a little musical break, so here’s two versions of the same song, Fun in Acapulco. First Proby, then Elvis himself. Enjoy!

ELVIS PRESLEY: THE STORY OF THE 68 SPECIAL Authored by Jeff Schrembs 2009 – All Rights Deserved: Elv

ELVIS PRESLEY: THE STORY OF THE 68 SPECIAL
Authored by Jeff Schrembs 2009 – All Rights Deserved:

Elvis, in 1968, was enduring numerous “life changing” events in his life. First he was married May 1, 1967 to (the then, now, and forever beautiful) Priscilla (who had came to America/Graceland to live in December of 1962) . Secondly, his only daughter (Lisa Marie) was born exactly (9) nine months after the wedding on February 1, 1968. Thirdly, the “era of the Beatles”, along with several other major acts, were coming to an abrupt end (by monopolizing the charts has they had beginning in 1963).

The “68 Special” is also referred to as the “Comeback Special” or “Elvis Comeback” or “68 Comeback”. Interestingly, the actual name of this (what was to be the “highest rated show of all 1968″ “) event was actually entitled “Elvis”.

“Elvis”, the Singer Special, began taping in June of 1968 and was aired on December 3, 1968 on NBC-TV (note: in 1968 there were three major television stations ABC, NBC, CBS and they captured 99.9% of the American viewing audience).

Elvis had “overcome the World” musically/recording artist/live performances (concerts and TV) beginning in the 1950’s and he created a sound that was “pure, full, fun, and his own”. Elvis, pure and simple, was THE Rock and Roll King. Yet, the King had not been onstage before a “live crowd” in over 7 years. His music, limited to the quality of the movies he was working on, were not “up to par” but since Elvis had “signed” to do the movies he was very limited in having “songs of quality” consistently into his movies. Many times, over many years Elvis voiced his concern about the songs he had to sing on the movies and that he was not being challenged as an actor or as a singer (note: Elvis’ early works being Love Me Tender to GI Blue were good. Then you have a great storyline of “Viva Las Vegas” with Ann Margaret and their chemistry was obvious to everyone and fans everywhere enjoyed this movie. After “Viva Las Vegas” there would be “one or two” songs, in all of the movies that he did after “Viva Las Vegas” that Elvis found “acceptable”. Every other song either made him laugh, or angry, but Elvis was the ultimate professional and finished each movie having given his very best efforts).

The previous decade had not been “personally satisfying to Elvis” and he suffered greatly when he learned late in 1958 that he was drafted. While in the Army Elvis received permission to visit his Mother in Memphis who was sick and in the Hospital. Elvis took the next flight out, which he stayed awake the entire trip praying and thinking about his beloved mother, and arrived at the Hospital and directly went into her room (Gladys) who was weak, complaining about her health, and yet “lit up” holding her only Childs hand. They loved each other so much and it was one of the worst tragedies for Elvis as just a few days later, his mother passed away in August of 1958. In 1960 Elvis was honorably discharged from the Army and agreed to do a “live on stage” TV appearance with Frank Sinatra sponsored by Timex (i.e. watch maker whose claim to fame was “takes a licking and keeps on ticking”) Other than the “Elvis Returns Frank Sinatra Special”, that aired shortly after Elvis’ discharge, Elvis did not perform onstage “live” because Elvis agreed to enter into “movie contracts” for 1961 – 1963 (negotiated by Colonel Parker).

These “movie contracts” would keep Elvis away from a “live audience” until this “Comeback Special” of 1968. I don’t believe that Elvis knew that these “movie contractual obligations would keep him away from a live audience for 7 years but the movies were successful, Elvis made a lot of money, Elvis was able to have some of his friends (Memphis Mafia) get bit parts/roles in his movies, and Elvis got into a “pattern” that revolved around the “movie shots” for the day and then Elvis and the boys playing in between shots and jamming/singing after the days work was over. The money Elvis made off of these monies was SIGNIFICANT and allowed him to travel, purchase nice cars, pay his employees, and it gave him a sense of “routine” which is nice to have when you are raising a young child (as Elvis and Priscilla were doing).

Colonel Parker initially began negotiations with NBC in 1967 (October) and it was considered that Elvis would do a “Christmas movie” along with a Christmas Special for the 1968 Christmas Season. On January 12, 1968 Colonel Parker and Tom Sarnoff (NBC Vice President) announced that Elvis’ first television appearance in more than eight years would be a Christmas special for which NBC. Elvis would receive $250,000 for the “live special” and he would receive an additional $850,000 to produce an Elvis movie and an additional $25,000 for the film’s music. Out of this agreement came the (critically acclaimed/reviewed) movie entitled “Change of Habit” which co-started Mary Tyler Moore.

It was also agreed that the “executive producer” would be Bob Finkel who had (recent) variety success and was nominated for an Emmy in 1965, 1966 and 1967, He, deservingly so, won the Emmy for 1966 and 1967. It was Bob Finkel who was instrumental in enabling Colonel Parker to see the “light” in allowing Elvis to perform live and not do an “ordinary safe Christmas Special”. However, Colonel Parker had the contract stipulate that the “closing number” would, in fact, be a Christmas Song!

Instead of a “tame” Christmas Special, as other “artists” were doing in the 1960’s (i.e. Bing Crosby, Andy Williams, and others) Elvis agreed, with great assistance from Steve Binder who opened Elvis’ eyes to doing a real live concern that would showcase Elvis’ musical abilities and his awesome stage antics. Elvis was asked to “put it all on the line” and get back to basics which meant (a) not being safe (b) going against Colonel Parker and (c) possibly doing damage to his career. It was NOT an easy choice, at the time, but kudos to Steve Binder for having the forethought to “re-introduce Elvis” to his Fans and to new fans of good music.

Colonel Parker was against this idea and was relentless in his desire to have Elvis “sing a few Christmas songs” and they say “Merry Christmas”. There was much “give and take” between Colonel Parker, NBC, and the Director and Producer. At some point Elvis, who never “spoke out against Colonel Parker in public”, was asked in a room where Colonel Parker was , Elvis was, and Steve Binder was “Elvis, you want to do a Christmas Special don’t ya”? Elvis replied that he wanted to do what he and Steve Binder had discussed which would NOT be a Christmas Special. To Elvis’ credit he accepted the feedback from the Producer and realized that his love of “live performing” had been building over the past seven years. When it counted most Elvis stood up to Colonel Parker and said what he wanted. To Colonel Parker’s credit he accepted the decision and made it work.

Elvis appeared on a “square stage” along with reuniting his early band members Scotty Moore (Guitar) and DJ Fontana (drums). The stage would have fans surrounding each of the four sides. Many of the “front rows” would be filled by women. Elvis also had Charlie Hodge accompany him who was a singer, performer, Guitar player, and Gospel artist who Elvis had befriended in the Army and who had been working with Elvis since his Army discharge. The format would be “Elvis, more Elvis” a recipe in 1968 that was “unsure” and “unproven” and (in all reality) a “make or break career move” for Elvis.

Elvis lost weight, vocally challenged himself, and prepared for this “live intimate live Concert” mentally, physically, and vocally. To add to Elvis’ incredible physical condition (he was down to 148 pounds which was about 35 pounds lighter than he normally was) his designer (i.e. Bill Blew who would design costumes for Elvis up until the day Elvis died) took the “blue jean jacket/jean look” and made a custom made black leather outfit for Elvis to open the show with. Bill Blew created other wonderful outfits for the special and he even got Elvis to agree to wear a “gold lame type jacket” (with black pants) as a type of “appreciation/acknowledgment of the gold lame suit Elvis had worn in the 1950’s. No one other than Elvis’ inner circle knew that Elvis HATED that Gold suit so it was with “trust” for Bill Bile that Elvis agreed to wear everything that Bill Bilew designed for the “special”. Elvis looked WONDERFUL with darkened black hair, sideburns, a slight tan, blinding white teeth, and his vocal/stylist/entertaining abilities were…phenomenal. He was a moving, singing, emotional, smart, sexy, 6 foot star dressed in black leather and he OWNED that stage – his guitar – and his vocal cords and sang/performed with all his heart. The result was that Elvis “connected” with his audience and they screamed, and demanded more, having been away from his live concerts for so long.

For the first time in years Elvis was EXCITED to perform and reviewed a variety of songs not only from his past hits but from more “current” numbers. During the rehearsals it was clear, after each day, that Elvis was “loosening up” and his magnetism was “visible” and it electrified the Producer and everyone who listened/saw it firsthand.

A lot of the credit for Elvis’ great mood, and optimism, was that Bob Finkel had hired (in mid May of 1968) Steve Binder (who was only 23 years old) to produce the music. It was agreed that Binders’ partner, Bones Howe, who had previously worked with Elvis in the studio and believed that Elvis and Steve Binder would “hit it off”, would come as a “package production” deal.

Interestingly, Steve Binder had been a student at the University of California before falling “head over heels” into the music business. Binders’ had directed the TV music series entitled “Hullabaloo which was a “must watch” for the youth of the late 1960’s (i.e. think about the current MTV TRL series but with “live acts” and everyone dancing and you get the picture).
Binder had become “Los Angles” hottest producer after he produced the Petula Clark special.

During the last (2) two weeks of May 1968 Elvis took Priscilla, baby Lisa Marie, and many of his friends on vacation to Hawaii. Elvis wanted/needed to be relaxed, tanned, rested, and to share some quality “family time” before the actual taping of the “special”.

The musical writers assigned to the “special” were Chris Beard (England born yet grew up in Australia) and Allan Blye. They wrote a script in which the trials of a young man was leaving home and searching for happiness along with a career. They wanted to show the obstacles the young man endured along with his eventual (successful) return home. They chose the song “Guitar Man” as the “theme” that linked the scenes together. The “special” was to end with Elvis singing a Christmas song (Colonel Parker had “agreed” that it would end that way) to end the “special”.

On June 3, 1968, Elvis began working with Binder and Howe at their offices. During one of the “get to know conversations” Elvis had shared how “saddened” he was by the shooting of Robert Kennedy (which had taken place on June 6, 1968). Elvis had also commented on the struggles of African Americans and the movements/assignation of Dr. Martin Luther King. Steve Binder had taken notes that afterward went to songwriter Earl Brown, who was writing song arrangements for the “special”, and asked him for a “modern inspirational closing song”. This song would become, and much loved, the incredible (and emotionally moving) song entitled “If I Can Dream” (see video above).

Elvis was handed the words to “If I Can Dream” the night before the final taping. Earl Brown had recorded/sang his somber version of the song and had given Elvis the tape to listen to. The first three times Elvis listened to the song he had to stop it, and get some tissues, for he was crying. Elvis understood that this song captured the essence of Robert Kennedy, Dr, Martin Luther King Jr., Americans, and the hopes of parents/children around the World. Elvis practiced the song for a few hours and then went to bed. When you watch Elvis sing “If I Can Dream” you instantly understand that Elvis is singing it incredibly. Once you understand that Elvis sang this, on one take, after playing around with it a few hours earlier it shows part of the genius that was…Elvis Aron Presley.

The Director was Eugene “Gene” McAvoy and he was tasked with designing the sets that would showcase Elvis, and frame his shots visually, and adhere to the story line. The opening scene of Elvis with the 89 “guitar men” (who were in silhouette and looked like shadows) captured Elvis’…completely. From that shot until Elvis appearing in his white suit standing in front of “red lights” spelling out “ELVIS” was nothing short of…inspirational and genius.

The makeup artist, and one of the choreographers, was Claude Thompson. The other choreographer was Jaime Rogers. Billy Goldenberg was the musical director and worked with Elvis on “Change of Habit”.

On June 17th Elvis “officially” began rehearsals and (literally) moved into his NBC dressing room on the NBC lot (which included Elvis sleeping there). Elvis loved to just “jam”, with Charlie Hodge and his “Memphis Mafia”, and did so while living at the NBC lot. During one of the jam sessions Steve Binder passed by and became “enamored” with Elvis’ freewheeling style and comfort level and his vocal ranges. It was then that Steve Binder decided to include the “jam session” as part of the “special” (which included Scotty Moore, DJ Fontana, Charlie Hodge, and (2) two other friends of Elvis Alan Fortas and Lance LeGualt).

On June 20th the recording sessions began at Western Recorders. It was imperative that Elvis was showcased with musicians who were “among the best in the World”. Not only were the “best of the best” musicians chosen but many were a part of (legendary music producer/genius) Phil Specters’ infamous “wrecking crew” that created that “wall of sound” creating “hit after hit” during the 1960’s.

Tommy Tedesco, Mike Deasy and Al Casey were picked for guitars (note: Elvis opened up the “special” using Al Casey’s beautiful red Hagsrom guitar after Bones Howe had spotted it in Casey’s instrument trunk and thought that the bright red guitar with its gold hardware would be perfect. As a “footnote” Hagstrom’s were made in Alvadalen, Sweden solely between 1958 and 1983 and were known for great quality).

On bass was Charles Berghofer and Larry Knechtal (who also played the keyboards) on piano was Don Randi, The “sideman” was Hal Blaine who played drums. John Cyr and Elliot Franks provided percussion. Frank DeVito played bongos. Tommy Morgan was on the harmonica.

The “Blossoms” provided the backup vocals (note: the Blossoms were Darlene Love, Fanita James and Jean King) but there were other “unnamed” vocalists as well. The Orchestra Conductor was Billy Goldenberg who conducted an orchestra of strings and horns, all of which added to the final product.

On June 26th. there was an on-set birthday party for Col. Tom Parker. During the birthday celebration the Colonel was given an autographed portrait of Executive Producer Bob Finkel dressed as Napoleon (note: this portrait is still a part of the Colonel’s collection in the Graceland Archives). Elvis also sang for the Colonel’s pleasure a parody of It Hurts Me written for the occasion by Chris Beard and Allan Blye. The new version of the song went: “It hurts me to see the budget climb up to the sky. It hurts me when Finkel gives me trouble, when I see all my money go just for one g—damned ol’ TV show. It hurts me the way that Finkel spends my dough. The whole town is talkin’ they’re callin’ me a fool for listenin’ to Binder’s same ol’ lies. Finkel calls me, says I’ve got no choice then hangs up the phone in that damned Rolls Royce. It hurts me when my tears start to flow, they promised me sure if I would give in that I would-that I would never go wrong, but tell me the truth is it too much to ask for one lousy tired ol’ Christmas song…?”

By June 27th, rehearsals were winding down and the taping of the production numbers had begun. Also that evening there were two sit-down jam session shows taped. On June 29th they shot the two stand-up shows. On Sunday, June 30th, Elvis completed taping the If I Can Dream finale. Physically and emotionally spent, Elvis then left for a week’s rest in Palm Springs.

On September 11, 1968 ‘Variety’ announced that the bordello scene had been cut from the TV special, citing it had been passed by the NBC censors but the sponsor Singer had requested that it be removed.

The Elvis special aired on December 3rd. at 9:00 EST and was seen by 42 percent of the viewing audience, making it the number one show for the season and giving NBC its biggest ratings victory of the year. It received, from every corner of America, rave reviews from the critics. Elvis was BACK, ON TOP, and RELEVANT! Rock and Roll, and Elvis Presley, would never be the same.

Elvis, who was nervously watching the show along with Priscilla, received “countless” telephone calls immediately after the show had ended congratulating him for performing a “timeless classic” and “rocking out”. Elvis Aron Presley was back and the fans LOVED HIM as they had since his first hit over a decade before (i.e. that’s All Right Little Mama”).
While Elvis sat on his couch, with his wife Priscilla, they hugged each other and looked at one another with a “renewed appreciation”. Elvis could, for the first time in years, take pride in his works and (equally important) the Fans loved him…and wanted more.
As they told one another they loved each other Elvis hugged Priscilla knowing that their lives would be changing. And as long as Elvis had Priscilla and baby Lisa Marie he would be happy, fit, and able to take on any entertainment challenges. As a family (Elvis, Priscilla, Lisa Marie) they had pulled off the greatest “Entertainer Comeback” in history and they did it in only 7 months. The mood at Graceland pulsated with happiness, opportunity, love, and possibilities.

A cultural icon, he is commonly known simply as “Elvis”, and is also sometimes referred to as “The King of Rock ‘n’ Roll” or “The King”.

In 1954, Presley began his career as one of the first performers of rockabilly, an uptempo fusion of country and rhythm and blues with a strong back beat. His novel versions of existing songs, mixing “black” and “white” sounds, made him popular—and controversial[4][5][6]—as did his uninhibited stage and television performances. He recorded songs in the rock and roll genre, with tracks like “Hound Dog” and “Jailhouse Rock” later embodying the style. Presley had a versatile voice[7] and had unusually wide success encompassing other genres, including gospel, blues, ballads and pop. To date, he has been inducted into four music halls of fame.

In the 1960s, Presley made the majority of his thirty-one movies—mainly poorly reviewed, but financially successful, musicals.[8] In 1968, he returned to live music in a television special,[9] and performed across the U.S., notably in Las Vegas. Throughout his career, he set records for concert attendance, television ratings and recordings sales.[10] He is one of the best-selling and most influential artists in the history of popular music. Health problems, drug dependency[11] and other factors led to his death at age 42. …”

He has designated himself protector of the yard and defender of the home. Presley is also dog in charge of barking, he has a loud voice for a little dog. One of his more odd jobs is to pick up our shoes. If we don’t put our shoes away he likes to bring one with him to his bed or his room. Now it appears that he has decided to bring both shoes to a place where he can see them. I guess we’ll have to double his treats if he’s going to do double duty

5.- Suicide Solution – Ozzy Osbourne

NO.

“Why try, why try? Get the gun and try it! Shoot, Shoot, Shoot”

4.- The Black Parade – My Chemical Romance

NO.

NO.

Ej: Are You Lonesome Tonight – Elvis Presley

NO.

The Effect of Country Music on Suicide“. Este género de música fomenta un humor suicida en las personas debido a que las canciones siempre tratan de problemas en el trabajo, maritales, de abuso de alcohol, etc. Que al parecer es muy popular con la población suicida. Un análisis de 49 áreas metropolitanas de EEUU demuestra que mientras más tiempo se le da a este género en las radios, mayor es la tasa de suicidio de la gente blanca (Sin importar los divorcios, pobreza, disponibilidad de armas, o lo sureño que sea).

“Honey, you lied when you said you loved me
And I had no cause to doubt you.
But I’d rather go on hearing your lies
Than to go on living without you.”

New Orleanslı aşçısından hep bu tostu istermiş.

Tarife gelince, çok basit:
2 tost ekmeği,
1 muz,

Now, this list holds my top ten greatest song titles, and when I made this list it also had to make sense how good the song was. Off course the song has to match the title. So here it is – what do you think? What would your top ten list be?

The titles are linked to the song in Spotify. Dont have Spotify – send me a comment and I will send you an invite.

“Blue Christmas” is a Christmas song written by Billy Hayes and Jay W. Johnson. The heart-broken tale of unrequited love during the holidays had long been considered a Christmas staple of country music, having been recorded by Ernest Tubb in 1948. In 1957, Elvis Presley effectively made “Blue Christmas” a steadfast rock-and-roll holiday classic by recording it in his signature style. The song has since been recorded by a host of rock and country artists alike, as well as those of other genres. The song was also featured in the children’s Christmas special, The Year Without a Santa Claus. More recently, the song has been covered by Céline Dion as well as the indie band Bright Eyes and Billy Idol in his 2006 Christmas album Happy Holidays.

Elvis Presley’s famous recording of the song appeared on his 1957 LP Elvis’ Christmas Album. It was also released as a single. Ernest Tubb’s version of the song included an extra verse not used by Elvis’ later version.

In 2009, Elvis’ version was used in a TV commercial for Verizon Wireless.

Lyrics

I’ll have a Blue Christmas without you
I’ll be so blue just thinking about you
Decorations of red on a green Christmas tree
Won’t be the same dear, if you’re not here with me

And when those blue snowflakes start falling
That’s when those blue memories start calling
You’ll be doin’ all right, with your Christmas of white
But I’ll have a blue, blue blue blue Christmas

(Instrumental Break)

You’ll be doin’ all right, with your Christmas of white,
But I’ll have a blue, blue Christmas

Memphis Mafia Members. For those “in the know about Elvis Presley” these “three wo

Memphis Mafia Members.

For those “in the know about Elvis Presley” these “three words” conjure up visions of Elvis’ closest friends, employees, confidants. Yet, in all reality they are each individual men (with families, memories, pain, joy, etc.) who were with Elvis (in most cases) from the beginning until (sadly) the end (i.e. Elvis dying on August 16, 1977).

Before I get to the “meat of this article” for those who dont’ know who “Jeff Schrembs is” I am, among other things, an Elvis Presley FAN who has bought/seen/listened to/loved/etc. “anything/everything” relating to Elvis Aron Presley (respect to his birth name) for (approximately) 50 years now. Additionally, I am blessed to be an “Elvis Expert/Authority” and in spite of my severe disabilities (from an auto accident) I am involved with numerous Elvis Presley Websites (Worldwide). I have, over these “50 years”, owned and lost COUNTLESS “one of a kind” Elvis Presley items. Fortunately, over this past decade and a half I have been able to recover and (in fact) add to my Elvis Collection and it is among the Largest Private Elvis Collections in the World. This statement is not to “brag” but simply to state a fact. I also “lived” Elvis years in the 1970’s and unless you were there, and paying attention, you would NEVER fully respect/appreciate/understand what happened to Elvis…and to the Memphis Mafia.

Even though I had committed to NOT “naming names” for this article I AM going to “name names” so here goes. To Red West, Sonny West, Marty Lacker, Billy Smith, and Lamar Fike (specifically) I want to say aloud for all ears to hear and for current and future “generations of Elvis Presley Fans” to acknowledge (a) THANK YOU (b) GOD BLESS YOU and your families (c) don’t blame yourself – time has passed – whats done is done – and we all understand…we really do and (d) I am sorry that it has taken me about “twenty years” longer than it should have to have issued this article.

I have written many articles whereby I convey my respect/appreciation/etc. to Joe Esposito as well as to (may he rest in Heaven) Charlie Hodge and to (Jerry Schilling). I wish these men, and their loved one/families nothing but the best in life and nothing will ever change that. If one man can have “love” for another, after watching them from afar for decades after spending time with them “up close” several times years ago, then I…have love for them all. Not only for what they did for Elvis but for their loyalty for Elvis and (most of all) for the words they have left…unsaid.

Now I turn to Red West and Sonny West who, along with Dave Hebler, wrote the book “Elvis What Happened” in 1976 and it exposed the fact that Elvis was ADDICTED to many drugs. These drugs were prescribed to Elvis, under a Doctors care/order, and they were to be used to help some of Elvis’ REAL medical issues (and he had many) including his insomnia which he suffered with as a child and at times put his life in danger by sleepwalking out into the street at night as a child where he could have been killed.

I own my ORIGINAL COPY of “Elvis What Happened” and when I read this book, the day it came out I was MAD at Elvis but FURIOUS at Sonny and Red. However, I was not aware (by Vernon, or Elvis, or another source I had) what the REASONS where that made Vernon Presley “fire” Sonny and Red and give them 1 weeks severance pay after being with Elvis for almost 20 years! Elvis, who knew the calls were going to be made, knew that his Father (Vernon) would be calling Red, Sonny, and Dave and firing them. In my OPINION I understand why it was done that way BUT Sonny and Red DESERVED more and it should have been given by Elvis or with Elvis present. You can’t turn you back on a relationship no matter how “corrupt” the relationship is. Elvis LOVED Red and Sonny West. I believe that they would admit that they loved Elvis as well…and still do.

Sadly, God took Elvis away from us on August 16, 1977 and that left so many UNANSWERED questions AND it took away any hopes that Elvis would work things out medically/mentally/emotionally/physically and make things right with Red West and Sonny West. I KNOW so I will repeat again I KNOW that Vernon Presley was a “shell of broken man” when Elvis died and he was STUNNED. His health was BAD and Colonel Parker was on him about signing documents “before others steal or take what was built’ so Vernon was suffering more than anyone else and so the “unfairness” that Red and Sonny endured, along with their families, never was resolved…day after day….month after month….year after year… What pain(s) they must have endured and still do each and every day of their lives.

I believe that there should be an organization that exists of the Memphis Mafia and that they have INTERNET AVENUES to tell their stories and to sell their books, autographs, etc. I believe the same thing for all of Elvis’s band members and back up singers throughout his entire career. I believe that insight, information, documentation, photographs, papers, etc. will be “changed through hands” and then gone away from Elvis Fans to see or to look at and/or to buy.

I believe that time is passing us by NOW and memories, events, words, acts, documents, get damaged daily and our memories get softer and softer. Thus time is of the essence to get the Elvis Fans WORLDWIDE United and supportive of having the lives/stories/memories/documents/photos/etc shared with Elvis Fans. And, more importantly, for Elvis Fans to WELCOME the Memphis Mafia “back in good standing” and for us all to give the respect to EPE and Jack Soden for all they have done and make sure that we are not viewed in any “adverse light” but in a “professional and beneficial light”.

I have a few ideas now and I will generate names/addresses/email info and then send out my primary plan and await responses. I will be spending some time going through the various ideas, and the viability of each one, and get some “unfettered unbiased responses from Elvis Fans Worldwide and then come up with the most effective means that can benefit Elvis’ Fans and any participatory Memphis Mafia Members. Of course we would NEVER “entertain” anything that would violate/interfere with EPE in any capacity (for I have too much respect for them as well).

Hopefully, over the next six months I will ensure that letters are sent out, responses complied with, and provide updates routinely through WordPress. During the INTERIM if you are a SERIOUS Elvis Fan or Collector OR if you know the Memphis Mafia FIRSTHAND then please have them read this article and have them contact me directly at elviscollector70@aol.com OR just reply to the article and leave their contact info…whatever is easier.

Hopefully, and God willing, Those who LOVED Elvis for most of their lives, and who counted on him for support monetarily and otherwise, may find that Elvis Fans (like myself) believe that there IS a demand and there is a VALUE and Elvis Fans are loyal. Thus, if the product(s) are good and honest then they can be tailored to a type of venue (i.e. DVD) or (book) or (online speaking engagement whereby questions can be asked to them online), etc.

Elvis loved these men and cared for them. Though I do not have the monetary ability, as Elvis did, to buy anything I want I believe that what I may lack in “gross” perhaps can be met with “quantity” (i.e. have 10,000 dedicated Elvis Fans buying “official Memphis Mafia” items) each and every month.

I believe that we OWE it to these men, and to their families, and to ensure that Elvis’ whole life story is available (note: I believe there should be categories of: E (everyone can read) M (Mature so over 18) Mx (even more “mature content” than for M).

This way you can maximize the time with the Memphis Mafia Members and ask questions whereby part would quality as (an example) to DVD # 1 (rated E) but another part would be to DVD #4 (rated Mx). Just an example.

Lastly, as I go through my collection (which I have OVER 100,000 ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND photographs of Elvis, records, autographs, scarfs, letters, notes, etc.) I appreciate the items more and more. It would be TRAGIC if the stories that are a VITAL part of the specific item in the collection were to….be lost forever (i.e. that I died and did not document the story about the item in a manner that it could be retrieved like via computer, via memory card, etc.).

Life is TOO SHORT and there are many lessons throughout Elvis’ life. We owe it to him to retain our “energy” and to put it, in any way that we can, towards keeping his name “alive” and being an advocate for his life and for his legacy.

Take care and God bless.

Jeff Schrembs

PS: Merry Christmas to everyone. Merry Christmas to Priscilla, Lisa Marie and her family, Jack Soden, EPE, Joe, Jerry, Red, Sonny, Marty, Alan, and so many more. Our lives have been “touched”, and enriched, by the man that each of you loved – cared for – and worked with. The man was an “imperfect man” and regretted many of his actions. I believe that between the pressure of the tours (74-77), no major event (TV SPECIAL, going Overseas to perform, etc.) that Elvis got “wore out” and his health was failing on several levels and he was depressed and the medications were abused (at times) but Elvis…”needed them”. He needed them so much that he knew by taking them that it went against everything that he had spoken out against (including at the White House with President Nixon) concerning the abuse of drugs and their addiction and their adverse effects. He took these pills knowing full well what he thought about them and he tried to make a distinction and that was that “these were prescribed under Doctors orders for specific medical issues” and I agree that one could make that argument. However, the fact is that REGARDLESS of how one gets the medications when they get so addicted to them that they need “higher doses” and “more and more” the “toll” it takes on the person and their family and their loved ones is NO DIFFERENT than if someone had gotten their drugs off the street. Elvis Presley deserved better and had he not of been under a GRUELING TOURING SCHEDULE (basically) from 1969 until 1977 he MAY have been able to undergo more testing and more lengthy interventions. Had he of done so perhaps Linda Thompson would have been there in 1977 and there is no doubt that she would have checked on him “over and over” the morning of August 16, 1977. Speculation is an interesting mental exercise and the opposite of “speculation” is FACTS and that is what the Memphis Mafia can provide and this Elvis Fan says…”now is the time”!

Who else agrees? Let your voice be heard and pass this article along!
