Press Start is a column here at the Unfathomable that is a weekly brief of games that I have been playing. This includes impressions, short reviews, ect.

Click on to this weeks playlist of Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne (PS2), Street Fighter IV (Xbox 360), and Final Fantasy V Advance (GBA)

Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne – PS2 – I don’t want to go into this too much because I think I am planning on recording a 5-10 mini-cast review about this game, since I haven’t even done a second mini-cast yet. I have had this game at the beginning of February and I have now logged 25+ hours into it. My resolve to finish it is now an act of contrition after having spent that much time. The good thing is that after the severe frustration I felt in the first 10 hours (see last weeks Press Start), I have pretty much settled in comfortably into the game. Once my character and the demons I have employed gained higher levels, I was able to get better spells and strategies to go along with them. I will say that I owe a lot to the FAQ I got from GameFAQs (shout out to A I e x). I just couldn’t imagine stumbling through some of the “puzzles” of the game without it. Also thankfully, the story has gotten more intriguing and coming at a steadier pace then near the beginning. It is still confusing and crazy, but that was one of the things I had heard prior to playing this JRPG. I hope to finish the game by this weeks end.

Street Fighter IV – Xbox 360 – Now, I did not expect Street Fighter IV to hit me this much with the fun-bat, but wholly crap, just call me a cripple now. I got the game in the mail on Friday and right before I went to sleep that night, I almost hit the “Keep It” button on my GameFly queue. Heck, I may still do it since I can get it for $42 (with a $5 off coupon) after I pay some bills this week. The 2D/3D blend is welcome and the game feels very much like SF2 on steroids. All of the old moves and strategies are intact. I was able to settle into my old World Warrior ways. I have pretty much only played exclusively as Ken, one of my two favorite characters, along with Sagat. After playing throught the Arcade Mode, I hoped on Live and spent about two hours pummeling opponents. With the exception of a stray match or two, connectivity was stellar. I was able to pinpoint super and ultra combos/moves with ease. Unfortunately, as I progress with wins (I am at about a 65% win ratio) and “battle points”, I was still being thrown newbies/scrubs during quick match choosing in Ranked Matches. I plan to start trying other characters to play with online, including Sagat and Chun-Li. I also have to look around online to see how to get towards a “100%” for the game, which includes obtaining titles and icons for your Street Fighter IV online persona.

Final Fantasy V Advance – GBA – I played very little of this during the week because when I was home, I was playing Nocturne. I think I may have progressed an hour or so, but it was mostly obtaining levels and not furthering the story. I plan on delving more into this during the time between completing Nocturne and getting my next GameFly rental.

50 Cent: Blood on the Sand (X360, PS3) Release Date: 2/24

Seriously?! WHY!? It’s not as though he’s desperate for money, I mean I know he needs to “get money, get paid” but c’mon. Who is going to buy this freakin’ game?? I hope no one, but unfortunately there is some poor soul that looks up to this man and will buy anything with his name on it, even this…

Stoked (X360) Release Date: 2/24

A game developed by a guy that normally makes snowboarding movies. With that information you hope the graphics will be accurate. Supposedly a snowboarding game that focuses more on the “previously un-snowboarded” terrain rather than at resorts. Might be fun…don’t know that it could top SSX Tricky on the N64 though. Can I get a “hell yeah”?

Street Fighter IV (X360, PS3) Release Date: 2/15

Does everyone remember the days when you would go somewhere that had an arcade, and you had only one dollar to play with. It seemed like the choice was always between Mortal Kombat or Street Fighter, I usually chose Street Fighter. Since then MK has whored itself out as 3 movies (a fourth to come) and a few tv series, not to mention the games. On the other hand, here is Street Fighter with only its 4th installment to the series, with one bad movie, and what looks like a second bad movie coming out this year. If your into button mashing, then pick it up.

Tom Clancy’s EndWar (PC) Release Date: 2/24

A game that came out November 4th on X360 is finally ending up on the PC. I played the demo when it was on XBLA, and that was enough of the game for me, I guess that says something about the game…unfortunately…

Dead Rising: Chop Till You Drop (Wii) Release Date: 2/24

I’m guessing you’ll get to use the wii-mote in some sort of “chopping” motion (as indicated by the title) to kill zombies. Wow, that sounds exciting…and I think in my superior physical shape I would maybe “drop” after about 2 minutes. Would rather sit down and play this game on another system.

Death Tanks (XBLA) Release Date: 2/18

Looks a lot like a game that I got on my iphone for free. Except this one costs a whopping 15 bucks, anyone think its worth it for a 2D turn based tank-shooting game? Not me, if you do, let me know how it is, and what makes it worth that.

This wasn’t all that game out this week, just the ones worth mentioning. Check back later for next weeks releases, until then, good luck.

Press Start is a column here at the Unfathomable that is a weekly brief of games that I have been playing. This includes impressions, short reviews, ect.

Click on to this weeks playlist of Mirror’s Edge (Xbox 360), Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne (PS2), Final Fantasy V Advance (GBA), and World of Warcraft (PC)

Mirror’s Edge – Xbox 360 – I got and completed Mirror’s Edge it within two days; that is not a knock against the game, since I enjoyed my play time greatly, but I kept pushing through the story to experience it. I became frustrated several times when facing off against some of the PK guards, but that was mainly because I had planned on playing the game first without killing anyone. I didn’t know this was an achievement, so that was an added bonus at the end. I then began the game again right away on Hard difficulty setting, but found it just as easy, since I knew most of the routes and I didn’t care about killing the PK guards this time around. The only real frustration I had was the final scene, since I kept getting gunned down a lot faster. I thought about trying to completing the Speed Runs and Time Trials, but opted to get all the other achievements and send the game back to GameFly. If/When the game goes down to $40 or less, I may pick it up, since it is a game akin to Prince of Persia: Sands of Time that I would enjoy spending a night or two completing it again.

Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne – PS2 – I ALMOST sent this game back to GameFly because of the frustration one of the bosses near the beginning of the game was giving me. It seems to me some of the early bosses are an extreme hurdle for this game; I unashamedly admit to following a FAQ for this, but that didn’t help overly much. Once I got past the frustrating battle, I calmed down about the game again. It is a pretty interesting game; I had never played a MegaTen game before, but after hearing about it a bunch on Retronauts, I decided to give the series a try. This game really is like most people describe; a Pokemon game for adults, using demons instead of cute little critters. The story does have me intrigued, but it also has me scratching my head most of the time. Basically, the “apocalypse” happened in Tokyo and reshaped the world for demons to inhabit. The main character has been changed into a human/demon hybrid and has to get other demons to join his group while he tries to figure out what is going on. It turns out two of his best friends are also in this “brave new world”, but are still human. I think I will give this game until this weekend and if I hit some more major road blocks, I will be sending it back.

Final Fantasy V Advance – GBA – I continue to work my way chronologically through the Final Fantasy series. Having just finished the FFIV DS remake two weeks ago, I fired up the ONLY Final Fantasy game I had never even started; I had played at least some of all of the other 11 “main” games. I am much warmer towards the job system in this game then I was in FFIII DS, and find myself knowing I will want to master a few. I am also following a FAQ for this, but a spoiler-free one, so I can get all of the summons/treasures/ect. while I play through. I am about 10 hours in and I am pleasantly at how much I am enjoying the story, even if it feels a bit cookie cutter. I have even chuckled at it a bit. I will continue to play this and I may even devote a whole evening to playing it instead of the usual 1 hour or so before sleep.

World of Warcraft - PC – Not much to report, since I only logged on once to do a quest or two with my low-level mage. I have been more interested in console gaming right now. However, I may play more in the near future once patch 3.1 gets closer. The news right now is that dual-specing will only be for max, level 80 characters. If they change that, I will definitely be playing my priest and paladin while I level; I do want to get to 80 sometime this year, haha.

*UPDATE* Tom Clancy’s HAWX was released today on XBL. The demo will show off the games stunning visuals and hopefully intuitive controls. The demo will also give the players the ability to play with up to 3 of their friends in co-op mode and gain points in order to unlock 3 planes: the F-16 Fighting Falcon, the SU-35 Super Flanker, and an AV-8B Harrier II. Only potential downside, another month until the release…one map can get old quick as we know from previous games that release multiplayer demos before the full title (battlefield anyone?). Anyways, check it out, let WRT know what you think.

Press Start, a new section here at WRT, that will bring you the titles of video games being released each week

NASCAR GOES THE WAY OF MARIO KART, F.E.A.R. WILL SCARE THE CONTROLLER OUT OF YOUR HAND, AND THE NHL GOES 3v3 Read all of them after the break…

NASCAR: Kart Racing (Wii) Release Date: 2/10/2009

NASCAR tries to make turning left for 2 hours more fun by making the drivers oversized for their “kart’s” and racing on dirt instead of pavement. What looks like a bad cross between NASCAR and “Talladega Nights”, with character names like Billy/Bobby Backfire, Maurice L’eclair, and Thriller Tadwell, it ends up like a redneck version of Mario Kart. No thank you.

F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin (PC, 360, PS3) Release Date: 2/10/2009

Maybe the scariest game available, if not one of the creepiest. F.E.A.R. 2 continues the paranormal suspense story that was F.E.A.R.. This time a disaster threatens a major US city, and at the heart of it all is Alma, a mysterious girl who is seriously ticked about somethings that happened in the past (bad break-up?). Either way, stay out of her way and enjoy this game at night with the lights out.

Mass Effect (Platinum Edition) (360) Release Date: 2/10/2009

Set a few hundred years in the future, and in an epic universe, Mass Effect challenges players to lead a squad of freedom fighters as they struggle against threatening armies to restore peace in the land (yeah, good luck with that). This is the first of the trilogy, and it is said to be amazing. This edition comes with the Bring Down the Sky expansion pack and a bonus disc including behind-the-scenes material, if you’re into that sort of thing.

Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection (360, PS3) Release Date: 2/10/09

Very. Simple. Old SEGA games. Over 40 of them to vague, making the largest collection of SEGA games ever offered. Games include Sonic the Hedgehog 1, 2 and 3, Columns, Ecco the Dolphin, Shinobi III, Space Harrier, and fan favorite Streets of Rage. So if you love old SEGA games maybe more than you should, this is your holy grail. Enjoy old school nerds.

3 on 3 NHL Arcade (XBL) Release Date: 2/11/09

If a fight breaks out at a hockey game, and there are no fans there to see it…did it happen? Answer, yes, and it will happen this wednesday. That’s when EA sports will release 3 on 3 hockey to fans exclusively over Xbox Live Arcade. I would bet this game is spot on if your looking for realism, but if it’s pick-up-and-play fun you’re looking for, then here’s your game.

And now from the “I don’t have a girlfriend so I’ll stay at home and play these crappy games just because it involves a hot chick” catagory of games….

Onechanbara: Bikini Samurai Squad (360)

If a game like this can be produced, then there should be a ton of games being released on to consoles, and the person who signed the “ok” on this should be put on trial.

Onechanbara: Bikini Zombie Slayers (Wii)

How does this work on a Wii? You control a chick in a bikini…and you fight off zombies? Makes complete sense…

The guys from PressStartComic.com have made many arcade-related videos over the past little while and I realyl like their latest idea – “Arcade Hunters” where they go around and tour arcades. It’s a great way to help some arcades get attention and in the first episode they visit an arcade that we have discussed here before – Tokyo Game Action. I would post the videos to the blog here but the particular video site they use is not yet supported by WordPress. So here are direct links from part 1 to 6. Enjoy!

Is the Press Start podcast dead before it even had a chance to live? I suppose that’s a fairly leading statement. I guess I should just ask the question in the subject: where has Press Start gone? The phenomenal alt.NPR offering was the only gaming podcast I regularly listened to (aside from the excellent Evil Avatar Radio podcast, which isn’t a podcast to me, per se, since I listen to the show live every Friday evening).

I tossed an email in Kyle Orland’s general direction earlier today because it finally dawned on me this morning that the podcast had simply gone AWOL. There were two new shows every month for June, July and August. September? Absent.

Come back, Press Start. Robert Holt, Ralph Cooper, Kyle? The laughable gaming podcast market is sorely in need of your focused discussions and engaging conversations.
