pretty vacant, pretty apt. i hope i find my passion for fashion back, so cliqued but quite true.

Seit dem Bellyfeel Album habe ich Punk ’D Royal in mein Herz geschlossen. Leider sind mir alle Konzerte der drei sympathischen Indirocker durch die Lappen gegangen. Eine Record Releaseparty zum neuen Album – Little Red Books – in Düsseldorf konnte ich mir nun wirklich nicht entgehen lassen.

In netter weiblicher Begleitung schlug ich natürlich wieder viel zu früh auf. Die schnuckelige Lokation, das Pretty Vacant, hatte noch geschlossen. Passenderweise fing es gerade an zu regnen, als wir beschlossen etwas essen zu gehen. Wir nutzten ganz „Business – Like“ Subways Hotspot und fühlten uns für ein paar Minuten sehr wichtig

Wieder am Club angekommen, hatte dieser immer noch geschlossen. „Alex“ sei gerade erst aufgeschlagen. Wer ist Alex? Diese wichtige Persönlichkeit, namentlich benannt, sollte mich noch des öfteren heute beschäftigen. Muss wohl eine bekannte Szenengröße sein. Ich hielt meinen Mund und nickte aus Peinlichkeit meiner Unwissenheit verlegen, aber anerkennend. Hätte ich mir das Konzertplakat mal etwas genauer angesehen, wäre mir aufgefallen dass die „Vorband“ Alex Amsterdam hieß

Allright. Wir genossen die letzten Sonnenstrahlen mit Ausblick auf den Rhein und machten uns irgendwann wieder auf zum Pretty Vacant. Dort angekommen herrschte nun reges Treiben. Ich hatte noch nie so viele Mädels auf einem Konzert gesehen. Sollte ich mich an der Türe vertan haben und für ein Konzert einer Boy Group anstehen? Das reichhaltige Merchandise von Punk ’D Royal am Einlass zeigte mir dann doch richtig zu sein und so ließen wir uns zufrieden an der Bar nieder. Nach einem Smalltalk mit der Band schauten wir uns den in einem Gewölbekeller gelegenen Konzertraum an. Vorsicht war an der schlecht beleuchteten Treppe geboten. Blindflug vorprogrammiert! Alles recht eng dort, aber dennoch schnuckelig.

Es dauerte nicht lange bis das Duo Alex Amsterdam ihr Set begannen. Keyboard, Gesang und Akustikgitarre ergaben einen flotten, melodischen Indi Pop. Der Mix knallte fett aus den Boxen, der Mischer meisterte seinen Job perfekt. Anfänglich dachte ich, dass ihre Song nach ein bis zwei Songs schnell langweilig werden würde. Jedoch entpuppten sich die beiden Musiker als Entertainer und hatten ihr Publikum in der Hand. Es war amüsant Alex Amsertdam’s Ansagen zu lauschen, cool, dass es mal auf Shows etwas zu lachen gab. Deren CD wurde für unglaubliche 1 Euro rausgehauen, fast geschenkt. Als Zugabe gab es zwei Coverversionen in Koalition mit Punk ’D Royal. In Erinnerung geblieben ist mir eine coole Interpretation von The Smiths – There is a light that never goes out –.

Mit Punk ’D Royal ging es nun deutlich lauter zur Sache. Schlagzeug und Bass knallte in die Magengegend und ließen das Tanzbein zucken. Zur Release Party gab es natürlich viele neue Songs, welche wie ihre Klassiker begeistert von den Fans aufgenommen wurden. Das Trio legte eine großartige Spielfreude an den Tag und ihr Schlagzeuger ist wahrlich ein Meister seines Faches.

Ich finde es absolut bemerkenswert wie weit die junge Band heute schon ist. Mühelos wird neben dem Spielen der Instrumente und dem Singen mit der freien Hand Keyboard und Sampler bedient.

Kämen Punk ’D Royal aus UK wären sie sicherlich schon heute das neue Sternchen am Indi Rock Himmel. Hinter Radio 4 und Konsorten brauchen sie sich jetzt schon nicht mehr verstecken.

Auch wenn am Ende das Set viel zu schnell vorbei war, gingen wir zufrieden nach Hause. Wenn Ihr Run dermaßen flott weiter geht, dürfen wir die Düsseldorfer sicherlich bald nicht mehr in solch kleinen gemütlichen Clubs bewundern.

Acclaimed singer songwriter Lila Nelson will make an appearance at Arcata Photo Studios (APS) Friday during Arts!Arcata from 6 to 9 p.m.

Nelson will perform several songs from her latest release Letter Home as well as – if we’re all really, really lucky – at least one Sex Pistols cover. Also, recent portraits of Nelson in and around Arcata will be on display.

The event is also an opportunity to meet – in between songs – APS photographers Martin Swett, Sheldon Sabbatini and Terrence McNally as well as S&S Events coordinator Taffy Stockton. If you’re nice and are over-21, they may give you a glass of wine.

APS is located on the Plaza Level of Jacoby’s Storehouse.

The Web site eGigs.co.uk is reporting that the Sex Pistols will be recording their first new material since the release of their landmark Never Mind The Bollocks, Here’s The Sex Pistols album in 1977. The impetus for the Pistols’ return to the recording studio has apparently come from the positive reception of the band’s reunion shows this past November.

The reunited Pistols (vocalist John Lydon, guitarist Steve Jones, bassist Glen Matlock, and drummer Paul Cook) have already been back in the recording studio, recording new versions of their classics “Anarchy In The UK” and “Pretty Vacant” last year for use in the Guitar Hero video game. The band hopes to get into the studio during the first half of this year to record the new material. Since the Pistols will be performing at the Isle of Wight Festival in June in the UK, the new material could possibly be showcased at that performance. A full album seems unlikely, according to Paul Cook.

Cook went on to say, “There’s talk of new material. The only problem is that it’s a bit hard to work on anything as John and Steve are in America and Glen and I are in the UK. So, it’s a case of finding the time to get together.”

With The Sex Pistols in town (Playing Brixton, London)and John Lydon and friends growing old wonderfully disgracefully and making a lot of old punks very happy , it’s been fun to see some of the recent American TV show outings especially this one on ex-pat Scot Craig Ferguson’s Late Late Show . Lydon amuses me greatly and I’ve always found something of the devilish Albert Steptoe about some of his face gurning. Warning: footage contains gratuitous naked man boobs.
