The movie “Priceless” deals with the two favorite things of the French people: sex and fashion. The other two favorite French things, cheese and berets are better saved for a review of “Frommage: Le Film.”

The star, Audrey Tautou is known to audiences west of the Atlantic for her roles in Amalie and the Da Vinci Code and plays not the descendent of Christ, but a cocktail waitress who attaches herself to wealthy men like a Brietling watch attaches itself to, well, wealthy men.

What we call a gold digger, Tautou’s character is the more sophisticate-sounding bon vivant pour le hommes.

The beginning of “Priceless” seems to draw a page from the “Pink Panther” movies: animated opening titles, 60s-style jazz, and a bumbling male lead.

The lead in question is Gad Elmaleh, here playing the same role as he did in “The Valet” as a hotel worker who pretends he’s more well-off than he really is.

When Elmaleh falls asleep on the job, Tautou mistakes him for a high roller and her next provider of Chanel dresses and Riviera hotel suites.

When her previous vieux protecteur (sugar daddy in Low English) leaves her. Tautou sees Elmaleh less as a star-crossed lover and more as an annoyance, as she bankrupts him at a high-class restaurant.

Despite her character’s shortcomings, it’s easy to see Tautou in this Holly Golightly-type roll, which has more to do with Breakfast at Tiffany’s than just the portrayal of those who will do anything to be among the ridiculously rich. As Elmaleh struggles with the bill, he inadvertently becomes the object of affection for an older widow, who soon foots the bill for a fancy hotel room and a new wardrobe, assuming the George Peppard role of “Priceless.”

Once Tatau realizes Elmaleh isn’t following her, she begins instructing him in the ways of her world, teaching him how to finagle things like $30,000 watches and Vespa scooters.

Movies like this fall into one of two categories: guy-gets-girl and girl-gets-guy. While the latter is more common, the former never sat well with me. Usually the guy tries to convince the girl that he’s worth going out with, usually that girl turns out of a type that rhymes with the thing you scratch. In movies like this, the guy goes through an hour and a half of rejection before the girl realizes she had been mistaken by treating him like dirt for the previous running time of the movie. Somehow I find this a little more implausible than the other variation.

In “Priceless” Tautou is far from a sympathetic character, especially as she milks everything Elmaleh has while remarking that she doesn’t really enjoy the caviar she eats all the time. After a while, you wonder why the hapless bartender even bothers.

Since we tend to get our game shows and not our comedies from oversees, it’s easy to see how “Priceless” could exist only in its Gallic form. Movies like this one are not unlike the fluffly pastries eaten in the film: filling for the moment, but ultimately empty and full of air.

Remaking this movie for American audiences makes about as much sense as remaking it’s spiritual predecessor “Breakfast at Tiffany’s.” Imagine Matthew McConehy and Rene Zellweger in the roles and it’s easy to spot a dud of “Gigli” proportions.

But therein lies the difference. Audiences seeing American actors doing the same things as their French counterparts may see the result as being reprehensible, but there is something that can be said for how much “the other” can get away with. American action movies are big hits oversees, but replace the leads with local stars and you get something that just doesn’t fit.

Kind of like an Hermes scarf on the neck of a Wal-Mart greeter.

So I’m going to a wedding tomorrow and it got me thinking, how does one choose the perfect diamond ring?

The diamond ring is something every woman has dreamed about, it is the epitome of our fantasies. As girls we’ve let our imagination run wild, what size carat do I want, what cut do I want, what clarity do I want, what setting do I want, white or yellow gold??? These are all questions ‘we’ve asked ourselves. Why, you ask?!?! Well simply because the diamond is an exceptional piece of jewelery, it must be shiny and stand out just as we do as women. A diamond ring has to be chosen in a way that is unique to the woman, fit with who she is as a woman, it should flatter her personality and lifestyle.

What better way to prove to your woman that she is one-of-a-kind, than giving her a one-of-a-kind diamond ring.  After all, ‘diamonds are forever’.

This post is dedicated to the release of the new album Priceless of Bryan Williams a.k.a. Birdman a.k.a. Baby.

Baby is the owner and founder of Cash Money Records, has been part of the duo Big Tymers with rapper and producer Mannie Fresh and is the “father” of lil Wayne after his biological father has left the family.

Baby founded Cash Money Records in 1991 together with his brother Ronald “Slim” Williams – nowadays it’s one of the most successful labels ever !

He first used the nick B-32 which meant Baby with the 32 golds.

In 2002 he released his self-titled debut studio album Birdman which is know for the singles Do That and What Happened To That Boy featuring Clipse.

He then went on to produce tracks for The Carter 1 (2004) and The Carter 2 (2005) for lil Wayne.

In 2006 Bryan Williams and Dwayne Carter released their first studio album Like Father, Like Son. Guest appearances included Fat Joe, T-Pain, Rick Ross, Tha Dogg Pound, and All Star Cashville Prince. Producers included Swizz Beatz, Scott Storch, and more. You surely know the banger hit single Stuntin like my daddy.

Birdman will release an album with long time friend Rick Ross titled The H. The first song released off the album was Sun Come Up, which featured T-Pain and Glasses Malone.

Birdman’s first single from his upcoming album Pricele$$ will be Always Strapped, featuring Lil Wayne, and the second will be Written on Her, featuring Jay Sean. South Side featuring Lil Wayne is the third single. Money to Blow featuring Drake and Lil Wayne is the fourth single.

Violence, I have been told, is not the way to solve problems. And, yes, before today, I agree. But, right just about just now, I was in such frustration that I had to let them out but all that I can think about is punching a random stranger, pour hot hor fun on my sister (I’m so mean, I know), and simply give her a punch in the face. I know I can never do all those but the mere idea of it, actually angers me so much, that for a moment there I thought I had the ability to really do all three.

But I didn’t do it. I’ll never do it.

Audrey Tautou, Gad Elmaleh

Irene: I love to watch someone work.  I’m always impressed by people who can do something.  I can’t do anything.  Actually, I can.  I can make conversation.

Jean (Elmaleh) works in a fancy hotel, and one evening is mistaken for a rich guest by Irene (Tautou), a woman who dates rich, older men so they will buy her nice things.  After a night together, Jean doesn’t see Irene again until a year later when she’s back at the hotel.  They get together again, but this time Irene discovers Jean’s secret.  Plus, Jean is fired for inappropriate use of a room.  While still pursuing Irene, Jean ends up taking on a similar lifestyle to hers.

I think that most people who saw Audrey Tautou in Amelie fell in love with her, at least to some extent, pretty instantly.  She was cute, timid and charming…and totally irresistible.  She is definitely not playing the same character in this movie (though she does end up riding on the back of a scooter again at the end).  Not that she isn’t still likable, it’s just now she’s taken on the role of seductress.  She knows just what sort of look to give, and when, and knows how to say all the right things to have these men whipping out their credit cards without a second thought.  She even ends up teaching Jean a few tricks of the trade after she discovers that he’s just a simple hotel worker.

It’s a rather predictable story about a woman discovering that there’s a difference between a man that will buy anything for her and a man that will do anything to help her and make her happy.  Despite its predictability, it’s still enjoyable and sweet.  There’s some arguing, but it avoids the tendency for movies like this to have the characters just yelling at each other for most of the film.  Romantic comedies don’t work if the leads aren’t likable, but they both are here.

There are loads of nice, rich people locations to look at when you’re not looking at Audrey Tautou, and the movie is never boring – even when it’s not being that compelling.  I thought Tautou and Elmaleh were both good when it came to the comedic stuff.  Elmaleh in particular seems to be good at subtle physical humor.  It’s easy to go over the top with physical humor, which usually results in a transition to annoying.  It’s also fun watching his character slowly realize that he can make a living by dating older, rich women as well.  Once he gets the hang of it, he and Irene even start showing off the loot that they’ve scored to each other.

All in all, I can’t say there’s anything overly special about this movie, but it’s still a nice viewing experience.  Of course, I might just be falling victim to Irene’s charms…like every other guy in the movie.

Money can’t buy happiness, but it can buy a lot of really really nice stuff.

10 – 1.1 because it drags a little here and there with some redundant scenes – 1 for being predictable and not all that compelling at times – .6 because it could’ve been funnier = 7.3

I recently read an article about the single remaining fragment of Adolf Hitler’s skull being tested and being found to have belonged to a woman.
