Realmente bueno el album de los Strokes, recuerdo que en el cch era la sensanción...

Todos conocemos el semanario musical NME, que se dedica a promocionar a la música Indie en Gran Bretaña, comúnmente siempre al día de todo el entorno musical tanto local como mundial. Esta vez la publicación inglesa nos proporciona la lista de los 100 mejores discos de la década. ¿En que se basaron? Bueno, realizaron una encuesta hace como 2 semanas (no recuerdo bien cuando vote) y el resultado completo se puede ver aquí. Yo solo les dejo la lista de los primeros 10 con su respectivo link de descarga ;D.

Me gusto el resultado, realmente se le hace mucha justicia a bandas que han marcado la década, como los Yeah Yeah Yeahs aunque me hubiera gustado que salieran The Hives…pero no se puede obtener todo en la vida xD! Me deprime que el Absolution de Muse este en el lugar 49 pero creo es algo a comparación de Coldplay que esta vez, apesar de estar en la lista de votación, ni siquiera aparecio entre los 100… Ni modo nos quedaremos con la mención en el 2002 -w-u.

Hace un tiempo en el blog posteamos las listas de los mejores discos de la década según Uncut y Pitchfork. Esta vez la que se pronunció al respecto fue la prestigosa revista musical NME, que confeccionó una lista de 100 álbumes.

El disco que ocupó el primer lugar fue Is This It, de los neoyorquinos The Strokes, que había quedado 5º en la lista de Uncut y 7º en la de Pitchfork.

A brit NME egy zenészekből, producerekből, zeneszerzőkből és kiadó vezetőkből álló zsűritől kért véleményt a 2000-es évek eddigi legjobb albumairól, és a kapott szavazatokból összeállította az évtized legjobb 50 lemezének listáját. Az első helyen a New York-i Strokes debütáló korongja, az ‘Is This It’, másodikként a Libertines bemutatkozó lemeze, az ‘Up The Bracket’ végzett, míg a 2000-ben kiadott ‘XTRMNTR’ című Primal Scream-album harmadikként zárt. (lejjebb a z első 50 helyezett)…

A Strokes első albumát elsősorban fontossága miatt választhatták elsőnek, a New York-i formáció 2001-ben retró divathullámot indított el az albummal, ezt követően szaporodtak meg a garázsrockot felhasználó együttesek, és a posztpunk újjáléledését is részben Julian Casblancas zenekarának köszönhetjük.

La revista británica, New Musical Express, eligió el disco debut “Is This it”(2001) de los sobresalientes chicos de New York, The Strokes, como el mejor de la década, de acuerdo a un listado que comprendía a cerca de 50 bandas de  renombre mundial.

De acuerdo a la publicación de la NME el disco de los estadounidenses sobrepasaba las producciones de los ingleses, The Libertines con “Up the bracket” (2002) y a los míticos y consolidados Primal Scream con “XTRMNTR“ que quedaron relegados en un tercer puesto de la lista.

El frontman de los Strokes, Julian Casablanca,  afirmó que es “genial” ocupar el primer lugar de la legendaria revista, agregando que “grabar el álbum fue divertido y estresante, pero muy emocionante. No quiero exagerar, pero muchas veces me entusiasmo mucho”.

Eu acho que o top 10 é forte, embora em alguns casos os ingleses tenham puxado a sardinha demais pro lado deles. Como sempre acontece em qualquer enquete do tipo. É lógico que a Kerrang! vai ter outra lista, assim como a Classic Rock, a Rolling Stone, a Mojo…

Breve, o semanário divulga sua lista das 100 melhores canções da década!

Diskussionen om politiska sympatier bland popmusiker dyker upp då och då. För några år sedan lanserade Timbro och PR-killen Erik Zsiga en version i ett desperat försök att framstå som relevanta inför sina bidragsgivare.

Zsigas metod var att dels med hjälp av diverse hiphop- och punktexter behäfta “popvänstern” med våldsglorifiering, dels skuldbelägga alla som uttryckt den mest försiktiga vänsteråsikt och samtidigt tjänat pengar på sin musik. Borgerliga ledarskribenter som Per Gudmundsson och Peter Wennblad har å andra sidan försökt klämma in så skilda saker som den svenska DIY-scenen, 90-talsindien och Manchestervågen i en högerkontext, med lite olika argument.

Grundfrågan kvarstår dock – olika tricks åsido, varför är så få popband öppet höger? Till och med de glättiga engelska syntpopbanden på 80-talet visade sig vara vänster när man skrapade lite på ytan – Depeche Mode flirtade med socialismen i intervjuer och i naiva texter, Wham! stödde de strejkande gruvarbetarna (men dissade fackbossen Arthur Scargill) och Martin Ware från Human League gjorde socialistisk konceptpop med Heaven 17.

Gary Numan, en outsider redan i småskolan, väckte uppståndelse när han deklarerade att han röstade på Thatcher. Här i Sverige blev Lustans Lakejer utskällda för sin utstuderat borgerliga image, men den känns i efterhand mer som ett sätt att reta upp proggare och punkare i stickade tröjor än som ett äkta politiskt statement. Därtill var det alldeles för mycket verklighetsflykt.

Naturligtvis finns det drösvis med band i diverse subkulturer som integrerat extremhögersymbolik och ibland också -åsikter i sin image – inom black metal, neofolk och vit maktmusik. Men det är ändå något fjärran från den ideologiska liberalism som Zsiga och ledarskribenterna bekänner sig till. I Sverige framstår fortfarande Alexander Bard som en särling i det att han kombinerar en genomtänkt liberal politisk ståndpunkt (och på sistone en politisk karriär i folkpartiet) med en framgångsrik artistkarriär. Men Bard skiljer å andra sidan nuförtiden oftast noga på de två rollerna.

Tanken på ett band som imagemässigt går in för att hylla arvet efter thatcherismen och önska hårdare tag mot fackligt organiserade, arbetslösa och sjukskrivna känns mest som något lika utstuderat som norska black metalbandet Mayhems hyllningar till diktaturerna i Albanien och Nordkorea.

Frågan om popvänstern och avsaknaden av en pophöger diskuterades i P1 senast i dag. Per Gudmundsson, som enligt egen utsago driver en kampanj för att “skriva om pophistorien ur ett högerperspektiv” pratade med Martin Aagård, vänsterintellektuell kulturskribent och medlem i Doktor Kosmos, ett band som i sin studentikost “lustiga” proggighet kan få vem som helst att drömma om att starta det där högersvaret på Mayhem.

Aagard har adopterat popvänsteretiketten på samma vis som homosexuella gjort med sina nedsättande epitet och säger sig vara stolt över att vara popvänster. Gudmundsson efterlyste tydligare politiska etiketter på låtar som i största allmänhet handlar om “frihet” – trots att de bästa brukar ha udden riktad mot sådana som honom. Programledaren lyfte fram en gammal spaning utbyggd till en lång artikel i Bon härom året om att det blivit hippt med borgerlighet bland annat eftersom vissa band anammat en ironisk tennis- och seglarstil och eftersom en ny generation vänsterengagerade ungdomar har bättre klädsmak än man hade på 90-talet.

Inte så värst intressant alltså, och mest småmysigt när det egentligen var upplagt för en ordentlig fight. Är det något som genomsyrat popmusiken de senaste 50 åren så är det passion.

Jag tror dessvärre att utgångspunkterna för diskussionen hamnat helt snett. Per Gudmundsson har tidigare velat se högerdrag i Joy Divisions musik med huvudsaklig hänvisning till att Ian Curtis röstade på tories i det enda val han hann med, vilket naturligtvis är en otroligt banal iakttagelse. Och övriga medlemmar var vänster. I dagens radiodiskussion talades om bristen på plakattexter om skattesänkning och privatiseringar, också det ett banalt sätt att resonera.

Om vi istället betraktar popmusiken på samma vis som Fredrik Edin gjorde med film nyligen finner vi att det självfallet finns mängder av högerinriktad populärmusik: All denna musik som genom att inte på något vis gå emot den rådande ordningen i själva verket blir ett stöd till den. Och då menar jag självfallet inte att det som krävs är vare sig gammal och ny progg eller förutsägbart “arg” musik som Rage Against the Machine eller Atari Teenage Riot – en ljudbild kan också vara politisk, som Tobbe i The Embassy en gång så klokt uttryckte det.

“Popvänstern” skapades genom att Erik Zsiga lyfte fram vartenda förment vänstervridet citat han kunde hitta hos svenska kändisar, inklusive Cardigans-Ninas försiktiga avståndstagande från höga chefsbonusar och till och med högertjejen Linda Skugges krönikor. I själva verket lider Sverige av att popartister talar alldeles för lite om sina politiska åsikter, alternativt är genuint ointresserade. Och det fåtal som öppnar käften tenderar tyvärr att vara olika sorters proggare.

“I’m working class. Give me a gun and I’ll shoot all the Young Conservatives” sade Primal Screams Bobby Gillespie när bandet var som allra störst. Den sortens tydliga ställningstagande för något radikalare än ett regeringsskifte väntar vi fortfarande på att höra från någon svensk artist i hans position.

No, we’re not talking about potty humor, although I suppose it could be considered as such! Today, as I was leaving the women’s washroom at the university I attend, a small, cartoonish sign above the toliet caught my eye: “Please flush toliet after using. Thanks!”.

Now, come ON, people…surely we have retained one of the basic tenets of washroom use our parents, preschool teachers, and any other adult in our lives has drilled into our brains…flush the potty when you’re done using it. Unfortunately, though, stating the obvious has seem to become the norm these days. We see this all the time on product packaging; “For external use only!” (on a curling iron); “Product will be hot after heating.” (on a supermarket dessert box); and “Choking hazard: This toy is a small ball.” (on the label of a cheap rubber ball toy). One of my favorite e-mail lists (I’ve been a subscriber for many years) is This Is True. Randy, the humorist who runs the site, also has a site named The TRUE Stella Awards. Stella, a senior from Somewhere USA (our neighbors to the South seem more apt to launch humorous lawsuits; please chime in if I’m wrong!) spilled a scalding cup of hot coffee from McDonalds onto her lap, severely burning her. She was awarded an unspecified amount of money, no doubt in the millions.

I leave my dear readers with this warning: next time you open that package of toilet cleaner, don’t put it in your mouth thinking that it will cure your gingivitis. And next time you’re cooking chili, don’t pour in a nice bottle of bleach. Finally, when you’re finished using the toilet…for God’s sakes…

Das Phänomen, über das ich heute schreibe, bezeichne ich der Einfachheit halber als das “Lynyrd Skynyrd Phänomen“. Vor allem, weil das bekannteste Beispiel von der amerikanischen  Rockband kommt (die sich anfangs Lynard Skynard nannten).
Lynyrd Skynyrd hat der Song Sweet Home Alabama zu weltweiter Bekanntheit verholfen und somit ist ihnen der Durchbruch gelungen. Schon bei den ersten Takten des Lieds denkt man zwangsläufig an stumpfsinniges Mitklatschen, Mitgröhlen und die Veranstaltungen, an denen der Song bis zum Abwinken gespielt wird. Die Einfachheit und die Ohrwurm-Tauglichkeit bestechen die Massen.
Leider wird aber mit dem Song die ganze Band verurteilt und als “One Hit Wonder-Band” abgestempelt. Dass Lynyrd Skynyrd andere wirklich großartige Songs haben, weiß kein Mensch. Würdet ihr glauben, dass zum Beispiel Unbroken von der gleichen Band ist, die Sweet Home Alabama geschrieben hat?!? Leider tritt dieses Phänomen sehr oft und bei sehr vielen Bands auf. Aus diesem Grund werden oft tolle  Bands nur mit ihren Mainstream-Liedern in Verbindung gebracht.

Zusammen mit diesem Phänomen fällt auch eine weitere Entwicklung der letzten Jahre auf.
Bands, die vor Jahren noch ziemlich unbekannt waren, aber gute Musik gemacht haben, machen heute kommerziellere Musik, ja, verweichlichen fast. Auffallend dabei ist aber, dass diese Bands erst nach dem Bekannt-werden, kommerziell werden. Also kann’s ja zumindest mal nicht daran liegen, dass sie Geld brauchen oder den Durchbruch schaffen wollen. War Incubus auf ihrem ersten Album Fungus Amongus (der Titel wurde übrigens unter die “9 Geekiest Album Titles ever” gewählt) noch eine echt abgedrehte, funky Band (Take me to your Leader), sorgt sie bei mir heute mit Titeln wie Love Hurts für echte Herz- und Ohrenschmerzen.
Bei Green Day gehts mir da ganz ähnlich. Wo früher bei At the Library (vom ersten Album 39/Smooth) noch so richtig die Gitarren schrammten, gibt’s heute fade Akkorde á la 21 Guns.
Schade eigentlich um diese Bands…

Und nun das heutige Kalendarium:

Am 16. November 1959 wurde in New York das Musical Sound of Music uraufgeführt. Die singende Trapp-Familie ist noch bis Juni 2010 in der Grazer Oper zu sehen.

Heute vor 47 Jahren wurde Gary “Mani” Mounfield, Bassist bei Stone Roses, später bei Primal Scream, geboren. Primal Scream, eine schottische Band, deren Name auf die Urschreitherapie zurückzuführen ist, wechselte seit ihrem Bestehen oft wie keine andere ihren Musikstil. Begonnen haben die Schotten als Psychedelic Rock-Band, wechselten aber bald zu Rock, den sie mit Dance Music mischten. Später nahmen sie sich die Rolling Stones zum Vorbild und spielten nur noch klassischen Rock. Primal Scream hat 2008 ihr vorläufig letztes Album veröffentlicht, auf dem sie zurück zu ihren Wurzeln gekehrt sind und wieder Psychedelic Rock wie am  Anfang, aber mit starken Electoclash-Einflüssen zu hören waren.

Em algum lugar do passado o Rio de Janeiro esqueceu aquele destino de guia civilizacional dos trópicos. É possível respirar por ali, andando pelos seus bairros tradicionais, ou visitando o encontro entre a floresta da Tijuca e o Rio antigo, o ponto de encontro entre a civilização e a selva dos delírios tropicais de Darcy Ribeiro. Ainda está tudo lá adormecido e ao mesmo tempo fazendo parte da cidade, como uma memória de uma infância feliz sob a sisudez de um terno. Todo o clima carioca se baseia nesse passado que simbolizava um sonho de cultura. Mas, como disse, há resquícios dele por todo lado. É preciso saber capturar e observar. Espero que um dia o Rio reencontre consigo mesmo e conduzida o Brasil para além da ilusão progressista cartesiana.

Já São Paulo é a hipérbole personificada. Vista do avião a cidade se estende sem pudores pelo horizonte e é agressiva, imensa e feia. Total oposto do Rio.  Não há muito o que admirar, somente sua grandeza. E por seu tamanho draga todos os desejos daqueles que produzem o que está além do necessário. Artistas, músicos, escritores e sonhadores são levados para lá transformando a cidade em algo belo. São Paulo é tudo ao mesmo tempo agora, por isso sedutora. Sempre odeio e amo a cidade quando vou lá. E volto sempre. Sempre.

Sabe não só conquistar o público, como alimentá-lo com um conceito consistente de rock, sem tratá-lo como idiota. Transita facilmente em todas as nuances possíveis do rock. Esse é seu maior trunfo.

Apesar das críticas negativas gostei do show do Primal Scream. Não conhecia muito bem a banda. Mas gostei principalmente do tratamento audiovisual do show. O telão lançava imagens icônicas do século XX criando uma hipnose politicamente carregada.

Já Sonic Youth foi aquilo tudo que se espera de Sonic Youth. Sem tocar hits dominaram a noite. Envolveram milhares de pessoas sob o signo do caos, com muita dissonância. A chuva que caiu com o primeiro acorde coroou a noite e amplificou o clima soturno. Fuderoso, como esperava.

Carol me ensinou que o melhor picolé do mundo é feito de melão e que, ao menos que já conheça a cidade, não é muito bom atravessar a rua antes de o sinal ficar verde. É possível que tenha me ensinado algumas coisas a mais, tipo que o sotaque dela é divertido, a dançar Sonic Youth e que Banana Yoshimoto é mulher. Vivendo e aprendendo. Foi legal encontrar com ela em São Paulo, apesar do pouco tempo.

A Entrada

Eu perdi várias apresentações do Planeta Terra porque quis rever dois filmes muito importantes na repescagem da Mostra SP. Para você ter uma idéia, cheguei no Playcenter literalmente segundos depois do Primal Scream terminar. Mas, a julgar pelos comentários sobre problemas técnicos, não perdi nada. Por outro lado, lamentei perder Móveis Coloniais de Acaju. Resumindo, com esse atraso eu fui direto ao motivo mais importante para estar lá.

O Local

Tenho pouco a reclamar do local. Os brinquedos funcionando enquanto aconteciam as apresentações deram um toque a mais pro show. Pena que não entrei em nenhum, para não desperdiçar a chance de ver pela primeira vez meus ídolos mais aguardados no palco.

Sonic Youth

Foi uma emoção à parte ver Sonic Youth ao vivo pela primeira vez. E com uma garoa fina, mas persistente, que começou quase ao mesmo tempo que o grupo e deu um clima a mais pra apresentação. Dito isso, senti leve decepcão no começo, a banda me pareceu desconfortável nas duas primeiras canções (se não me falha a memória, No Way e Sacred Trickster). Mas depois disso a apresentação se tornou muito mais vibrante e eufórica.

Um feito, se você lembrar que a maioria das canções saíram do último disco deles, The Eternal, do qual gosto bastante, mas considerava distante dos melhores trabalhos deles. Sem dúvida The Eternal soou muito mais empolgante ao vivo. Talvez eu tenha que reavaliar o disco com mais cuidado. Quanto ao resto, teve até Kim Gordon girando no palco até cair. Este fã não pode reclamar.

Iggy & The Stooges

A chuva parou e a apresentação começou de surpresa, uns cinco minutos mais cedo que o previsto (pelo menos foi a impressão que tive). E foi bombástico. Há muito suspeito (e a noite só reforçou isto) que o sonho de Iggy Pop é morrer literalmente no palco. Ele correu, pulou, chutou o microfone, engatinhou e se jogou nos fãs. Enfim, tudo que você espera dele. Se você acha ele um poser, paciência, mas então pelo menos considere que Iggy praticamente foi um dos inventores do que hoje você chama de poser.

Houve música também, mas como avaliar a música sem considerar toda essa performance? Não dá, Iggy & The Stooges mais que um show de música, foi um espetáculo no sentido mais amplo da palavra. No momento mais bonito, Iggy convidou alguns membros da platéia a subirem e ajudá-lo (ele enfatizou o “alguns”). Em segundos o palco sofreu uma verdadeira invasão brazuca de 50 ou mais pessoas. Em vários momentos foi impossível perceber onde estava Iggy. Pena que houve agressões quando a multidão se dispersava e descia por seguranças que não entendem nada de show. Felizmente muito mais gente entende do assunto. Ainda bem.

O Resto

Cansado e com dor nas costas (de tanto pular no Sonic Youth), não prestei atenção no N.A.S.A., que me pareceu uma apresentação de fim de festa (não, isto não foi um elogio). Mas foi bom avistar amigos como a querida Ivis e o Tiago Superoito. A noite foi boa.

Pra quem acompanha esse blog, sabe que por aqui nos preocupamos com tudo aquilo que vem junto com a música e tudo aqui que leva a música. A arte tem uma responsabilidade e muita gente se responsabiliza por ela.

Num desses sábados, estive no Planeta Terra, festival de música realizado em São Paulo que trouxe nessa edição ninguém menos que Sonic Youth e Iggy Pop.

Gostei muito dos shows. Não conhecia bem a obra do Iggy Pop, não conhecia muita coisa além do último cd do Sonic Youth, vi uma ou duas músicas antes do Primal Scream, acabei perdendo os shows do Macaco Bong e do Móveis, não conhecia The Ting Things, tampouco os outros artistas que tocaram no festival.

Tirando Copacabana Club, foi um festival digno de replay.

Deu para perceber que eu não relembrei grandes clássicos de minha vida, nem cantei alucinadamente nenhum refrão, mas mesmo assim, fiquei impressionado com a organização do festival.

Invejável até para primeiro mundo. Pra começar, o Planeta Terra desse ano foi no Playcenter – e se não podemos mais recriar woodstock, acho que a gente tem de reinventar de acordo com nossa realidade.

Internet WiFi gratuita para todo mundo, para tuitar pelos celulares e computadores de bolso. Ponto para o festival, que tinha uma grande rede social acompanhando tudo on-line.

TV Terra com entrevistas nos backstages logo após cada show, fazendo com quem fosse fã, acompanhasse desde os shows até as entrevistas depois.

Logo na entrada, todo mundo ganhou um ingresso VIP para voltar para o playcenter, um por pessoa.

Logo depois, a CocaCola, patrocinadora do festival, dava coca zero para todo mundo que entrava, gratuitamente. Acabei que toda hora que estava com sede, ia até a entrada e pegava um pouco. Não gastei um centavo com refrigerante.

Todos os brinquedos funcionando. Todos os brinquedos sem fila.

Cadeiras livres por todo o parque, para quem estivesse cansado de tanto pular de algum show.

Nenhum flanelinha  lá fora.

O som estava simplesmente perfeito. Vi uns 8 shows diferentes, NENHUMA microfonia. Nada que incomodasse aos ouvidos, sempre com muito grave, sempre soando muito bem.

O show do Sonic Youth foi o único que acompanhei do início ao fim. Fantásticos timbres, impressionante como criar aquelas camadas harmônicas só com guitarras.

Cheguei as 18h, saí de lá as 01h. Cansado e empolgado por ter gasto muito bem com a certeza de que ano que vem tem mais.

como ninguém nunca tinha tido essa ideia? espero q os caras repitam isso. sempre! (além do q o playcenter é facinho de chegar)

os shows.

primal scream – som meio ruim, banda meio desanimada, mas mesmo assim bacana e com um final – movin’ on up / rocks / accelerator – muito foda!.

sonic youth – o som tava bem melhor, (quase) não tocaram hits (?), mas era o sonic youth. pusta show!

iggy and the stooges – iggy and the stooges! precisa falar mais.

não vi outros shows, só uns pedacinhos. mas dei uma pá de volta no tal do bumerangue. era pra ter andado mais, mas não deixaram.

as fotos aí em cima são minhas, não tão lá essas coisas, mas eu aprendo. depois ponho mais no flickr.

Com lamentável atraso, aí vão meus comentários (incrivelmente curtos) sobre os shows do festival Planeta Terra, que rolou sábado passado no Playcenter, em São Paulo. Os shows não me tiraram do chão, mas admito que fechei os olhos no looping da montanha-russa.

Surpresa: Etienne de Crecy fez meu show favorito do Planeta Terra

Móveis Colonais de Acaju | 7 | Como sempre, incansáveis (e o André está cantando cada vez melhor). A abertura do show foi, como diria Herbert Vianna, acima das palavras. Um pouco menos criativos no palco, no entanto.    

Maxïmo Park | 4 | Não tão vergonhoso quanto The Rakes, mas quase lá. No palco, o pior acontece: tudo o que a banda fez de decente está concentrado no disco de estreia. Infelizmente, eles parecem curtir muito os outros dois discos. Serviria como show de abertura do Franz Ferdinand (ok, talvez nem isso).

EX! | 4.5 | Vi um pedacinho de nada, mas me pareceu uma paródia de todas as bandas moderninhas de Nova York (com uma vocalista que me deixou com saudades do La Roux). Era?

Primal Scream | 5 | As lembranças do show ruidoso, violentíssimo que eles fizeram no Tim Festival há alguns anos pesaram contra este (morno) retorno. E, para piorar, soou desconjuntado: começou como uma colagem das referências punk da banda, terminou com hits fáceis e sensação de psicodelia requentada. Pouco.

Sonic Youth | 7 | O primeiro show do Sonic Youth a gente nunca esquece (e o Metronomy que espere). Tudo bem: não há como descrever a força estranha que move Kim Gordon no palco (num determinado momento, acho até que ela virou Monga, a indie selvagem). Também tenho que admitir que é intelectualmente muito excitante assistir a uma banda que vive no presente e não dá bola para os próprios hits. Mas é um show que deve ter deslumbrado especialmente os fãs do disco mais recente deles. Sei que seria pedir muito, mas eu preferiria ter curtido o repertório de Murray Street ou de Washing machine.

The Ting Tings e Iggy and the Stooges | Vi um pouco dos dois shows (a organização do festival, sádica, marcou as duas atrações para o mesmo horário), nem dá para avaliar direito. Ting Tings rendeu mais do que eu esperava: eles conseguem segurar o público por quase 60 minutos com apenas três hits e clima de programa de auditório (eu daria um 7, vai). Do Iggy vi só três músicas e me arrependi de não ter ficado mais tempo no palco principal.

N.A.S.A. | 4 | Picaretagem muito da vagabunda.  

Etienne de Crecy | 8 | Surpresa: quem procurava espetáculo visual encontrou um parque de diversão inteiro no show hipnótico do DJ francês. Dançando no cubo mágico. Fantástico.

DETROIT SOCIAL CLUB

If you like Kasabian, you are going to love this six piece. They may describe themselves as “big beat junkie folk“, but they’re wrong, they are the new Kasabian. It’s that simple. There’s a little bit of bluesy Primal Scream in there perhaps, possibly even a little bit of Oasis, but mainly Kasabian. We won’t be ending the critique there however, because they also happen to write fucking awesome tunes. Very much like Kasabian do actually. You know the sort of songs; absolutely giant, sing along, room-filling, killer, foot-stomping monsters. They even have that kind of “na na na na na” bit in the middle of a track, so that the inner football fan inside you can scream along at their gigs. Again, this is no bad thing. It’s music to get swept up and feel pumped by. There’s not a lot of re-invention here, as they musically look a little backwards, but there’s no denying their collective ability to write an atmospheric anthem that occasionally goes a little psychedelic (you know for the stoners, in the same way Kasabian did). It’s a big sound, as is perhaps expected from a band that lists five members as guitarists. And big is what they are going to get, to go with their big Polydor record label signatures and eventual big venues in which to play their big singalongs. However, if you don’t like Kasabian, it’s probably fair to assume you won’t be enjoying much from them. Saying that, if you don’t like Kasabian you wouldn’t have gotten past the first line in this review.      (MB)

PARALLELS

I don’t know about you but I’m sure getting that jaded feeling from all these 80s obsessed synth bands that currently clutter up the music scene.  So it comes as some relief to find that Toronto synthesizer trio Parallels are obsessed with the 70s instead. To be exact, it’s that decades brand of light electronica, often seen being produced by the likes of Giorgio Moroder, or Sparks (circa their Terminal Jive LP).  They take both of these influences and use the pulsating, moving basslines and oscillating effects to blend them with a certain sexy knowingness. It’s similar to the type of irresistible lure that Ladytron mastered to perfection.  Arpeggiator-driven melodies underpin the sweet vocals of electro siren Holly Dodson, who has the voice of a young Madonna on the tunes Ultralight and Dry Blood. Additionally, she’s found turning on some enticing, breathless, emotional vocals with the broodier and darker soundtrack Ghost Machines.  They were formed in 2008 by Crystal Castle’s tour drummer, Cameron Findley, who has aimed for a more sophisticated blend of hi-NRG disco and electronic pop, making them sound like a synth band for grown ups.  An album is set for release at some point before the end of 2009, but for now you can hear tracks from their previous three EP’s on Myspace.      (DV)

THE LOOM

It seems like we write about bands from across the bridges and tunnels of New York every other post on this blog at the moment, so frequent are the arrivals in The Recommender’s inbox from that part of the world.  No doubt this is on the back of the awesome CMJ festival that recently occurred there.  A festival that opens many loft apartments and warehouses to the public as spaces in which to showcase contemporary music.  Recently spotted on our radars from this event include Freelance Whales, which we covered here, and Sleigh Bells, who we listed here.  So perhaps the final band that is to emerge on the back of all the blogging buzz is The Loom.  Already one EP in, At Last Light, they are rumoured to be currently recording their debut full length album, which they’ve requested fans to help fund.  This multi-instumentalist, (in the truest sense of the word), six piece from Brooklyn sit just the right side of folk music, but only just.  OK, so there’s banjos and ukulele and female vocals that seem straight out of the Irish sixties, but it’s the beat-claps and John Fanning’s vocals that lift it into a slightly more contemporary box. It’s got great melodic parts, in the essence of Arcade Fire and the aforementioned Freelance Whales, but without the pop or snare drum. It may be a little twee for some of you, but we think there’s still plenty in the locker to enjoy here. Perfect for the winter ipod.   (MB)

This week’s program delves into space.

Usually the week of Womad Las Palmas the program is kinda dedicated to the festival, but change is good, so we’ll save the muesli-eating, sandal-wearing stuff for another time okay.

As I was saying, space….the result of speaking with the Bugman Martian over the weekend. We spoke of influences, gigs we’d like to witness, the death of record shops, blah, blah, blah.  Adrian Sherwood was/is a major influence on us both and the work he did on the Primal Scream album ‘Echo Dek’  is a favourite without a doubt.  Speaking of Adrian, then you have to mention Prince Far I.  Through his work with Adrian I was introduced to the voice of Prince Far I.  Yeah, he was the man too, however he was senselessly cut down over some stupidness in Jamaica. Bloody annoying, finding out about an artist, musician, writer, politician whatever, wanting to find out more, to see them live, and to find out they are six feet under…bloody annoying indeed.  But I digress…so we have more explorations from 4Hero, from the Macro Dub Infections album that Mr. Martian compiled for Virgin Records.  4Hero weren’t ones to play safe, and witnessed by their contribution, The Paranormal in 4 Forms, not your typical drum and bass fare, at all.  Which reminds me, Roy Ayers, with whom 4Hero collaborated several times will be at this years Womad Festival, so if your in the area and fancy some quality, get your butt down to Las Palmas, it’s free.

Não sei se foi porque eu tinha muita vontade de ir a um festival em um parque de diversões que eu amay o Planeta Terra desse ano. Achei ótima a locação, o parque funcionando durante as apresentações, o serviço okayam, sem tumulto e nem a chuva que caiu durante parte da noite conseguiu tombar com o evento que foi ótimo. Me diverti pencas nos brinquedos que praticamente não havia fila nenhuma e dava pra vc ir zilhões de bilhões de vzs. Pelo menos eu fui, rs! O parque estava todo iluminado, com a praça de alimentação funcionando, muitos bares espalhados pelos dois lados do parque além do estacionamento onde rolava o palco principal. Muita gente bonita, todos os hipsters de SP estavam lá. Foi divertido ir na montanha russa com o pessoal da moda de SP, eu pelo menos achei bem digno! Ex Vjs que parecem não conhecer o tempo e nunca envelhecerem como a Sabrina (dos tempos do Disk MTV, Top 10), Gastão (amor de adolescente da minha ameeega) e o Edgard que eu tive que fazer a tiete pq não é sempre que o cara aparece assim do seu lado no meio do nada neam? Ele e a Marina Person são os meus símbolos para a MTV aqui no Brasil, fatão! A nova geração tmbm estava lá…mas nem confiança pq hj os tempos são outros! Sorry! Fora que foi uma delícia dançar em frente ao Castelo dos Horrores, com música boa, maçã do amor e algodão doce cor de rosa neam? Eu achei chic, achei digno e achei delícia.

Copacabana Club só deu para pegar o final do show pq foi quando eu cheguei no festival, mas pelo menos deu pra dançar os hits mais conhecidos da banda, que vestiam figurino fundamento do pessoal do B.Luxo. Ahazô! Achei belo!

Primal Scream foi divertideeenho mas não empolgou. Muita colocação? Loucureeenhas? Não sei, só sei que foi meio assim neam? Mas eu dancei mesmo assim e nem confiança. Achei okayam. E perdi parte do show brincando igual a uma criança no Playcenter, só percebi que já estava rolando enquanto estava no looping de uma das montanhas russa. Aliás, adorei a idéia de deixar o brinquedos mais legais funcionando durante os show, foi bem diverteeedo, sem fila e com cara de show na Europa. Ponto para a organização! Eu pelo menos me diverti pencas!

Sonic Youth é sempre Sonic Youth neam? O show foi meio que sem grandes hits, mais no fundamento do álbum mais recente mesmo. Só que as guitarras, o som da banda eu diria que é impossível de se confundir. E Kim Gordon? Linda, lôra, tah magrona, tah gatona e tah gostosa e continua sendo uma das minhas musas do rock. E eu me pergunto: Hey Joni, when will all these dreams come true? Foi o show imperdível da noite, fato!

Iggy fez alôka neam? Só consegui assistir o começo e o final do show dele…tudo porque o Ting Tings começou quase no mesmo horário e ai já viu neam? Mas deu pra ver o começo do show com um dos monstros vivos do rock e o final, com direito a bundeeenha do Iggy e tudo mais. Euri e quero ser ameeego do Iggy, me liga tah?

Patrick Wolf foi loucurinhas neam? Uma versão menino de Lady Gaga no quesito figurino pelo menos e menino talentoso viu? Toca vários instrumentos e me fez dançar um pouco, mas foi bom ouvi-lo do alto dos brinquedos do parque tmbm. Achei chic!

O show do Ting Tings foi incrível tmbm, super dançante, pra divertir mesmo. Claro que tocaram o seu álbum praticamente inteiro e todos os hits é claro, mas foi um show curto eu diria. Deu vontade de mais! E me lembrou muito o CSS, achei o mesmo fundamento. Mas achei digno e me diverti pencas. When nothing makes you feel good, then nothing makes you feel good.

O set do N.A.S.A foi absurdo e certamente um dos pontos altos da noite. Com uma batida incrível os DJs colocaram o Playcenter para dançar e muito ao som de muita música eletrônica com fundamento rock e hip hop, com samplers conhecidos e que todos nós por algum motivos temos uma relação afetiva com eles. A video art do show foi uma atração a parte. Quase chorei com o little MJ ainda na época dos Jacksons 5, mas foi quase. Eu chorei mesmo e literalmente com a imagem do Kurt Cobain, gigante no centro do telão e um sampler de “Smells Like Teen Spirit”, com um dos rifles de guitarra mais conhecidos do mundo do rock. Chorei como criança, me emocionei pencas e me senti como tal, grunge e aos 13 novamente. Lindo! E como se tudo isso não fosse o suficiente, a presença tímida de Spike Jonze (sim, ele estava lá, eu não disse pra vcs?) no cantinho do palco, fazendo alguns takes da performance e da platéia e sendo obrigado a ouvir o meu griteeenho irritante de “I Love U Spike”, que ele retribui com um sorriso mais tímido ainda e um pequeno aceno. Quase morri! Mas eu tinha que me declarar para ele neam? Afinal, era o Spike Jonze C@r@lho! O homem que fez o brilhante “Being John Malcovich”, além de ter feito o recentemente lançado “Where The Wild Things Are” pra mim é claro, eu sei que foi. E esse foi o meu encontro com Spike Jonze, que eu vou contar um dia para os meus netos, ahhhhhh vô!

No final do show dos caras, todo mundo foi para o palco, técnicos de som, luz, organizadores e Sipke Jonze pulando e dançando ao som do excelente set dos Djs mais incríveis do momento, prontofalei!. E eu amo o Jégonza tmbm, só pra registrar!

ps: Edgard, eu tin amo! Adoro o seu circo, a sua caragem ou whatever e acho que o horário do Altas Horas deveria ser seu, prontofalei!

O saldo da noite foi superpositivo ainda mais pra mim que nem iria no show e meio que ganhei o convite em cima da hora de uma super querida da minha sala da pós que fez a phina pra mim. LOVE quando eu não crio muitas expectativas e acabo me surpreendendo? Música boa, diversão…LOVE! Achei a locação perfeita, fácil de chegar pra todo mundo, fikdik ae para os próximos festivais hein?

E se no ano que vem rolar de novo e no mesmo lugar eu estarei lá! Guilt recomenda!

Today marks the twentieth anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall, which effectively was the Fall of Communism in Germany. The wall was built in 1961 and wasn’t pulled down until the 9th of November 1989. With me having a German grandmother i’ve always had a keen interest in all things German from a young age and have been told many stories about the Berlin wall by my Gran and my mum.

Seeing as this isn’t a history lesson though i’m not going to waffle on about the Berlin Wall, i’ll get to the point, this weeks list is a collection of German bands/artists, mainly hailing from Berlin but some from other areas. And also included in the list is one song about the Wall itself.

I’ve sorted out the MP3 links now, so instead of having to open the file/song up in a new page and then downloading it you should now be able to just hover over the MP3 you desire and “right click and save target as” and the song is yours. It would be much appreciated if you let me know if it works or not, i’m not very good at all the technical sides of blogging so feedback or help is welcome! Thanks

I will at some point go back and change all the links for the MP3’s from previous posts so they are all easily accessible and downloadable, so don’t be shy to have a check through and download whatever tracks you want.
