As we mature, our faces lose some of its’ elasticity and firmness. It first appears as lines and wrinkles creep in around the eyes and lips. It seems to spread with a mind of its own. Kristy Embry has been a professional makeup artist for over 20 years and has worked with celebrities as well as a U.S. President. Here are a few tricks from her Webmag:

Makeup Primer- smooths, tones and minimizes the look of fine lines and wrinkles ; creates a velvety, matte , radiant finish; use a cosmetic wedge and start in the T-zone; add a little extra around eyes and over any frown or laugh lines( Arbonne’s primer is safe to use around the eyes and on the lips); when selecting a primer test it on your hand for a velvety finish and a matte look; the primer creates a barrier between your skin and foundation so the true color of the foundation shows and reduces the oil throughout the day from your skin

Foundation-use a cosmetic wedge when applying to create a smoother finish and a more natural look; if using mineral makeup use a good eye cream to soften the lines where the makeup has settled; use loose powder to set the makeup but use sparingly only in the T-zone with a cosmetic wedge( brushes can leave brush marks in your foundation

Mister-use a mister to set your makeup and give a dewy look ( Arbonne’s Awaken Rejuvenating Mist is great and the Unwind is even better for dry skin)

Eye shadows -on mature skin only use matte tones( no frost in them); matte tones do not reflect light easily and show less wrinkles

Bronzer- should not be too orange or have too much frost in it- Arbonne has developed the “perfect” product for that sun-kissed look; it can be used on all skin tones year-round

Mattifying Powder- minimizes pores ; translucent; can be used in the place of compact powder; as a highlighter on the planes of the face (top of cheekbones, bridge of nose, jaw line) ; works on all skin types and does not build up on the skin

Come join me for a fun Makeup Party and learn how to use these tricks and more to create a great looking “youthful” face on Tuesday, 1-12-10 . 7pm . Contact me at 919-380-3798 or annmckenzie01@yahoo.com for directions or to RSVP.

Strategic Primer, my strategy game (I’m still looking for players for the current campaign!),

Strategic Primer, my strategy game (I’m still looking for players for the current campaign!), began many years ago as the apparatus for my eighth grade science fair project.

When I began that first campaign, I really knew very little about what I was doing. I had originally intended it to be played on a physical board, and so had printed out a large map and some tokens to represent units, but quickly abandoned that when I realized how much trouble it was going to be to keep track of. The game as first conceived was very different from its present form:

There was a universal currency rather than individual resources.

The basic elements were units, fortresses (which alone remain basically intact), and improvements. I was clumsily adapting from Civilization: Call to Power, which I had recently acquired and begun playing; the only difference was that improvements could be made to units as well as to fortresses.

Units were for the most part much larger than at present: most units in the starting package were fifty men, with the catapult (crew of eight) the notable exception.

The rules reflected that: combat (and lots of other things) were decided based on dice rolls against a table of random chances, largely stating what happens when two battle lines crash into each other, but also including the chance that a moving non-complex (i.e. foot) unit could get out of formation, slowing it down and hurting its chances in any combat.

And so on. On the other hand, somehow from the very beginning the two most distinctive and worthwhile mechanics of the game were present from the very beginning: First, the strategy-submission and results-return mechanic, which distances the player from the action and requires more pure strategy and deliberation than the tactics and quick thinking required even by most turn-based strategy games I’ve played. Second, the as far as I know unprecedented idea of allowing the player to discover any advance he or she can describe to his or her scientists. But these, the map, and some of the starting-package advances are pretty much all that remain from that first campaign.

I’ve used Benefit’s Dr. Feel Good for over 5 years now. It is an amazing product. With vitamins A, C and E, Dr. Feel Good definitely makes you feel oh-so-good. It’s a great primer with nutrients for your skin. A rule of thumb the wisest woman I know has taught me (my mama of course), “whatever goes on your skin goes IN your skin”.

The product is a balm and comes with an applicator sponge. I usually help myself to a generous dose over bare skin, before putting on my moisturizer. It smooths everything out (including my fine lines and wrinkles *gasp*) and also mattifies my usually skinny and oil-clad skin. If and when I forget to put on moisturizer (which is a big no-no), any excess of product does tend of flake off my skin especially if I get a little over zealous and go over my eyebrows and hair line.

Dr. Feel Good is definitely on my must-have list of beauty products. At $28, it’s a pretty good price point for a product that will last about 4-6 months. Sephora has hearty supply as does Shoppers Drug Mart’s beautyBoutique.

How to use: Smooth over bare skin or over makeup to mattify skin.

Ingredients: Corn Starch Modified, Diethylene Glycol Diethylhexanoate, Neopentyl Glycol Dicaprylate/Dicaprate, Isosteryl Meopentanoate, Silica, Polyethylene, Ethylhexyl Isononanoate, Carnauba (Copernicia Cerifera) Wax, Tridecyl Trimelitate, Diethylene Glycol Diisononanoate, Chamomile (Anthemis Nobili) Flower Extract, Retinyl Palmitate, Tocopheryl Linoleate, Ascorbyl Palmitate.

Skinfood Red Ginseng Firming Base From The Box: This makeup base contains Red Ginseng to moisture sk

Skinfood Red Ginseng Firming Base

From The Box:
This makeup base contains Red Ginseng to moisture skin texture. This is very light and fluid with tightening effect that smoothes out wrinkles and tones down signs of tiredness. It has a very natural finish.

My Skin Type:
Actually very oily, but surpressed with BHA exfoliator. Results in generally ranging from very dry to normal/dry skin. Generally dehydrated, very sensitive, and acne prone.

My Skin Tone:
Some said I have very fair, Casper-ish complexion. Frankly speaking, that’s what you see in my FOTDs, but I personally think I look (much) darker in person than in those photos. Still, yes, I’m quite fair.

Bottomline: my skintone range is lighter than MAC NC/NW15 to NC/NW20.

I have neutral cool undertone.

Packaging:
Weird plastic bottle with pump. Weird because the pump doesn’t have a pipe! So I stored mine upside down.

Color Selection:
Only 1 color is available, and it’s very, very pale with pink undertone.

Texture:
It’s creamy out of the pump but once it comes in contact with skin it becomes rather fluid.

Coverage:
Totally adjustable. From sheer to medium; you can build it as you like.

Blendability:
No problem. It spreads well, but it dries down quite quickly so beware.

Finish:
Semi-matte. The pink undertone brightens my skin well. It’s has glow, but not overly so at all.

Oil Control/Lasting Power:
It seems to be pretty good on my t-zone. It doesn’t feel oily or heavy. Instead, it seems to bring down a bit of the oilies. A surprising feature, since I was thinking that this product is something marketed toward more mature skin (with its ‘firming’ claims etc).

My General Review:
I bought this just out of curiosity, because Skinfood has pretty packaging and their BB creams are not bad at all on my skin. And this product surpasses my so-so expectation!

At first I used this on its own. It comes out in a liquid-cream consistency, but melts into a liquid when it comes into contact with skin. I can build it up to cover my red post acne marks beautifully. The pink tone brightens my skin, gives me a satin glow too. Plus, it glides on smoothly on top of my pores, making it tighter. Perfect! The only thing is the color match. It’s sooo pale, it can look unnatural even on my fair skin! My younger brother gave me thumbs down on my makeup one day, because it’s unnaturally pale and pink.

So I tried to use it underneath a BB cream. I don’t know why but my mind said that this will pair beautifully with Skinfood Gingko Green BB cream. And yep, it does! It improves the BB cream in every way. It neutralizes the slight yellow tone on Gingko BB. The pore tightening effect also comes intact, making the Gingko BB looks better than ever. Ginseng base also imparts slight glow to the Gingko BB, giving the illusion of healthy skin. Yum. For all that effect, I only need a thin layer of Ginseng base.

Unfortunately, as a base, for me it doesn’t increase ease of BB cream/foundation blendability. On my hands when I tested it, I know that it smooths out my skin to some degree, but I prefer my base/primer to give extremely slippery silicone-y finish, and this one doesn’t.

Oh well, but I’ll accept that because my BB still glides on top of this (albeit not as nice as when I use super silicon-y primers). The end result is still great And I know for fact that some people doesn’t prefer slipper silicone-y finish

What Else You Need To Know:
I don’t know anything about the anti wrinkle and firming claim. I know for a fact though, that wrinkles can’t be cured totally with a topical product. Firming too, no topical ingredient can really firm your skin permanently.

So for me, personally, I’d dismiss those claims.

Application:
This seems to dry pretty fast on your face, so do it one section at a time, and you’ll be fine

Price:
Not too expensive, typical Skinfood product. I believe I got it at around IDR200,000 (~USD20)?

Availability:
It may still be available in local Skinfood stores, but last time I checked it already missing from the Singaporean web. Is it discontinued already?

Ingredients:
No full ingredient list, unfortunately Even if it’s there in the label, I wouldn’t have been able to read it since everything apart from the description is in Korean

I hope it doesn’t contain alcohol and such But I know for sure it contains fragrance though! It smells slightly like herbal.

Overall Rating:
4 out of 5. Brightens, gives pretty glow, and works very well on my huge pores. But color may be too pale for some people, and I prefer highly silicone-y primers.

BTW if you have uber pale, pink toned skin (like around NW5-10), I believe this will make a great foundation for you

People may tell you that worrying about your hair and makeup is trivial and, to an extent, it is. Y

People may tell you that worrying about your hair and makeup is trivial and, to an extent, it is. Yet, when your hair is making you break out because of an over production of oils and your makeup doesn’t last more than an hour you become frustrated and rightfully so. I’ve been dealing with it for lord knows how long and I’m tired of feeling gross so I have compiled a short list of things that have proven themselves useful.

HAIR-

If you have fine, oily, and limp hair then you don’t need conditioner. It will just mess your hair up even more.

To give yourself a little volume try using PANTENE PRO-V VOLUME SHAMPOO. It’s clear so it doesn’t have a bunch of stuff in it to hold your hair down.

Clarifying shampoos help lift gunk and make your hair feel clean.

Washing your hair in water that is too hot will make it fall out and make it extra oily. Instead, when you wash your hair make sure the water is almost lukewarm and when your rinse use COLD water.

Massaging your scalp while you lather your hair helps to make your scalp produce oils faster so you can get rid of it when you rinse.

Try not to touch your hair because of the oils in your hands and use a clean comb to make your hair less stringy.

Using dry shampoo such as PSSSSSST! (Cvs for like $6) helps revive your hair a bit throughout the day.

Using witch hazel on your hair-line also helps.

SKIN-

Wash your face everyday with THE RIGHT TYPE OF FACE WASH! Anything too drying will make your skin very oily and very dry at the same time which sucks. Anything too weak will make you break out because it’s not really doing anything.

Never wash your face with soap.

Use a scrubbing wash 2 or 3 times a week to revive your skin. ( Papaya is a great and inexpensive at home exfoliant.)

Wash in warm waster and rinse in cold water to close your pores and stunt the production of oils.

Use SMASHBOX PHOTO FINISH PRIMER under your makeup. It’s a bit expensive but very, very worth it.

Always moisturize your skin before you put on your primer. Wait about 10 minutes (if you can) and then apply the primer, waiting ten minutes for that, too.

Witch hazel is a very good natural astringent- so use it!

A facial mask of honey and bananas will help for strictly oily.

Rose petals, rose-water, and strawberry yogurt help with combination skin.

Worrying about these things is trivial, so you shouldn’t have to.

I know with all the hustle and bustle of the holidays and spending in this economy can be a mess in its self! So I know everyone wants to look good, but not able to splurge all the time on professional brand products. Here are some that I recommend that are budget friendly especially for you out there for under $20.00!

*Not in any particular order*

1. NYX – 5 Color Palette Eyeshadow/5 in one (Shown as 7.99)

2. Maybelline – Lip Liner (Shown as 1.99)

3. Cover Girl - Loose Powder (Shown as 5.89)

4. L’Oreal – Colour Juice Lipgloss (Shown as 7.99)

5. Revlon – Smoothing Primer (Shown as 11.99)

6. Neutrogena- Blot Sheets (Shown as 7.19)

7. Almay – Makeup Remover Pads (Shown Travel Size as .99)

8. Ulta – Cheek Color (Shown as 6.99)

9. Physicians Formula- 100% Natural Origin Bronzer (Shown as 13.99)

10. Studio Gear – Hidden Agenda Concealer (Shown as 15.00)

You should be able to find with these brands on a budget everything you need for your face. Just make sure if you have questions about the right color for you, ask someone at the makeup counter. In the case, of example if you go to Ulta (where I found these prices, but subject to change at all times) or Sephora make sure to ask an associate because that is what they get paid to do. So there is no excuse not to take care of your appearance, even if you just have to throw on a little powder and a little gloss on the go!

Until next time! Stay warm! Happy New Years!

Blu – ray is an optical disc format, which is competing with HD-race DVDin with its
facto standard storage medium for HDTV. HD-DVD vs. Blu – ray battle resembles
between Betamax and VHS and DVD + RW and DVD-RW.

Currently, the major Hollywood studios are split in their support for Blu —
ray and HD-DVD, but most of the electronics industry is now in blue corner.

The main differenceamong these new players and optical discs and currents
The technology is that Blu – ray, as the name suggests, uses a blue-violet laser to read
and writing data in red.
Keeping the heat up and your energy bill down

With the colder months here many Americans are looking for ways to save money on the rising cost of heating their homes. In addition, this is also the time of year when homeowners may want to take a look at some unwanted visitors who can do some real damage to areas of the home you may never see.

Sealing Up And Insulating the Home

Expert Advice on Home Improvement from dannylipford.com
The main goal of sealing up and insulating your home is simple – keep the warm air in and the cold air out! In the average home, if you added up all the cracks and gaps, the area would be approximately three square feet! Just imagine the amount of cold air that can come in through those spaces and of course the amount of warm air that can sneak out. Check out the following areas where the biggest losses can occur:

Attic Insulation

Since warm air rises, it goes without saying that if you don’t have enough insulation in the attic, your heating bills are quite literally going through the roof. One of the most common and effective ways of saving heat is by making sure you have enough. If you’re not sure, go in your attic and see if the ceiling joists are visible. If they are, you need more. Also, different areas of the country require differing R-values of insulation, which translates into a thickness of the insulation. Check with your local home center, and they will be able to advise you on the recommended R-value for your area.

Sealing Up Cracks

Cracks around windows, on perimeter walls and at electrical outlets that are located on an exterior wall can create a tremendous leak of warm air out and cold air in. Caulk any gaps and seal up cracks and holes to provide a more airtight envelope around your home. Also, check your weather stripping, and replace or adjust any that is worn or doesn’t fit tightly.

Inefficient Windows

While this is a time of year that many homeowners choose to replace old windows that rattle and the wind blows right through, purchasing new insulated glass windows is expensive and requires some planning. http://www.dannylipford.com/diy-home-improvement/design-and-decor/choosing-the-right-windows/ A terrific interim solution is to install window insulation kits that contain plastic sheeting to cover the window. They are very easy to install, can completely insulate the window, and costs only about $3 per window.

Unwanted Guests

In the summer the unwanted guests include ants and in-laws while in the winter it’s rodents and in-laws, but all year long the worst uninvited guests are termites. This is an excellent time of year to have an annual termite inspection to make sure that, if any termites are present, they are eliminated COMPLETELY. According to the National Pest Management Association, damage caused by termites is upwards of two billion dollars.

Getting the Most of Your Heating System

Now that you have insulated your home and made sure that there are no critters gnawing away at your foundation, the next step is to make sure you are getting the best possible performance from your current heating system. One of the first steps is to have your heating system serviced by a professional to make sure it is operating at maximum efficiency. It is also a good idea to change your air filter at least once a month.

Another way to maximize on your current heating systems is to replace your existing thermostat with a computerized setback or progammable thermostat. By setting it to fit your daily routine, you can be sure that your home is warm when you want it to be, and not when you are way from home.

Cloud Computing – Where does one start from Consider this analogy: historically, a developer determi

Cloud Computing – Where does one start from

Consider this analogy: historically, a developer determines when it’s appropriate to create new threads. Today, a developer can use an API to attach a new server with the same ease. The ability to program an application architecture dynamically puts enormous power in the hands of developers with a commensurate amount of responsibility. When this power is well understood and harnessed, the results can be spectacular. Animoto’s mashup tool that creates a video from a set of images and music scaled from 50 to 3,500 servers in just three days due in part to an architecture that allowed it to scale easily. For this to work, the application had to be built to be horizontal scaled, have limited state, and manage its own deployment through APIs.

Similarly, when the New York Times wished to convert 11 million articles and images in its archive to PDF format, one developer using 100 Amazon EC2 simple Web service interface instances running Hadoop completed the job in 24 hours for less than $300 of software development. The potential is immense. But if an application has a lot of state and can’t be deployed programmatically, it probably isn’t an application that is suited to this model.

Having standards that make deployment easy is more important than having the perfect environment for the job. There will continue to be specialization, however the 80/20 rule applies and the starting point should be with a standard.

Loose-coupled, Stateless, Fail-in-place computing

Cloud computing assumes that everything is temporary, and it’s just as easy to redeploy an entire application then it is to manually patch a set of individual virtual machines. If data is small, or the application is stateless, a hybrid cloud can be much more useful than if large amounts of data must be transferred into a public cloud for a small amount of processing. The classic example of Cloud computing with parallelisation with load balancing is a number of stateless Web server all accessing the same data, where the inkling workload is distributed across the pool of servers.

The cloud computing philosophy for application maintenance is not to patch, but redeploy. Managing the model that created a virtual machine image, not the image itself, simplifies this redeployment. Application images are not patched; they are throwaway objects and thus need to be stateless. A component should be able to “fail-in-place” with little or no impact on the application. This requires a paradigm shift for administrators and developers.

Service Offering Types

Customers can manipulate not just virtual machine images, but also servers, storage systems, network devices, and network topology. Hybrid clouds combine both public and private cloud models, and they can be particularly effective when both types of cloud are located in the same facility. Cloud service providers tend to offer services that can be grouped into three categories: Software as a Service, Platform as a Service, and Infrastructure as a Service. The first and ‘oldest’ is ‘Software as a Service (SaaS)’. Google offer GoogleApps, Microsoft offer online versions of Office, and so on. The second is ‘Platform as a Service (PaaS)’, typically offered through an API which integrates within one’s application. The third is ‘Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS)’, offering servers, databases, firewalls and routers as virtual appliances. The latter is the main topic of this write-up.

Benefits

Minimise Investment Risk – If an application’s success is short-lived or does not deliver, you won’t have invested in extra capacity needlessly. When pushing an application to the cloud, scalability and the risk of purchasing too much or too little infrastructure becomes the cloud provider’s issue. The cloud provider typically has such a massive amount of clients that it can absorb the growth and workload spikes of individual customers, reducing the financial risk they face.

Benefits which can also be reaped by using in-house virtualisation (e.g. VMware).

Speed to Deployment – Increasing infrastructure capacity can potentially become a matter of minutes.

Availability – As a side effect of adapting one’s application to the cloud, availability will improve and many infrastructure SPoFs will be eliminated. Servers can fail, but the service will remain available.

Reliability – Applications are now built where entire servers can fail and not cause disruption, since server-specific data is irrelevant. This means that there will always be an active server ready to reply to a user’s request.

Flexibility and Agility – Cloud applications enables going to market very quickly.

Applicability

The classic example of parallelization with load balancing is a number of stateless Web servers all accessing the same data, where the incoming workload is distributed across the pool of servers. Cloud computing takes the concept to the next level.

Applicability to Databases – Database management systems have adapted to run in cloud environments by horizontally scaling database server and partitioning tables across them. This technique, known as sharding, allows multiple instances of database software to scale performance in a cloud environment by partitioning tables across multiple database instances, supporting large databases through horizontal scaling.

Applicability to CPU-intensive applications – Rather than creating a new thread for each task (example frame rendering), cloud optimized applications create a new virtual machines to render each frame, increasing performance through horizontal scaling

It’s close to the end of the year, and traditionally this is when people start compiling their

It’s close to the end of the year, and traditionally this is when people start compiling their year-end lists. But this isn’t just the end of the year, it’s the end of the decade. So on behalf of that, in addition to a top 10 of 2009, I’m putting together my top 25 of the decade (since 100 is too much and I just don’t have time for 50)– 25 films that thrilled me, moved me, stuck with me, and have inspired me as a writer and as a person. Each one of these films has on some level changed the way that I perceive cinema, either in a greater context or on a more microscopic level; they’re films that I have revisited or intend to revisit for years to come.

I typically find lists like this tricky because inevitably you end up missing something that feels valuable. If upon reading each installment in turn, and viewing the entire list together, you feel that something is missing then it might be best to think of this list as a more condensed version of what would inevitably be a more robust and complete list had I the time to produce one. But let’s not put off the festivities any longer– here’s installment #1, entries 25-21:

25. Fantastic Mr. Fox: Wes Anderson is no slouch behind the camera, but it has taken him a decade of filmmaking to stumble upon a medium that truly suits his style. While stop-motion animation has seen a slight resurgence in recent years with prominent entries in the genre such as Corpse Bride and Coraline making splashes, Anderson’s low-tech stop-motion treatment of Roald Dahl’s 1970 book stands out as the best of the bunch. It is also arguably the best film Anderson has made to date, a singular and unique piece of cinema that is strikingly visual and replete with excellent vocal performances by its ensemble cast. The movie’s world is spry, full of life and painstakingly detailed without relying on modern and sophisticated techniques and technologies to provide those vivacious qualities. Despite his detachment from the process, Anderson has clearly found his fire again in bringing his vision to life; even if Fox does not signal a sustained return to form for the director, it remains a masterful entry in his career.

24. Brick: There is an amusing incongruity at the heart of Rian Johnson’s directorial debut– the average teenager, more likely than not, has never seen the movies which Brick is a descendant of (such as The Big Sleep or Kiss Me Deadly). Yet in this film, the character archetypes and dialogue of such iconic and classic film noirs are dispersed amongst the student body of a modern day high school. Johnson, however, is too talented (and too passionate about and familiar with the genre) to simply lift those ideas and transpose them upon a movie and call it his own; instead he employs his knowledge of noir characters and dialect to create a neo-noir that is modernized and simultaneously rooted in noir tradition. The result is a shockingly original update of the hard-boiled detective stories of the 1930’s to 50’s, stylish, clever, and full of verve. The movie’s secret weapon? A grown-up Joseph Gorden-Levitt playing the tough-guy detective character, without whom the film would still be excellent but lacking the elevation that his career-high performance grants.

23. Milk: Part of what draws me to film is the medium’s ability to teach and to educate, and so when a movie’s goal is to introduce its audience to a subject that they may not be familiar with I tend to respect it, even if I ultimately don’t like it very much. Gus Van Sant’s 2008 biopic about California’s first openly gay public official, Harvey Milk, is just such a movie– though make no mistake, it is a completely wonderful movie from start to finish and not just a work of art whose intentions I admire. At the center of this layered interpretation of the life and death of Harvey Milk is Sean Penn, turning in my favorite performance of his career as the eponymous and doomed city legislator. Here he plays Milk with restraint that I forgot the actor possessed, never downplaying Harvey’s charming and infectious personality or his tenacity, but also never taking his portrayal over the top and out of the movie’s bounds of realism. (One of the film’s final images– the real Harvey Milk, positively beaming– seems to exist to confirm the veracity of Penn’s performance.) And ultimately, that devotion to reality is the movie’s purpose– as our country still debates endlessly over the “controversies” of gay marriage, Milk is timely and topical, but more than that it is undeniably an essential part of America’s modern identity.

22. Before Sunset: In 1995, Richard Linklater told us the story of two young people– Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy– meeting in Vienna, getting to know each other, and falling in love with his film Before Sunrise. Nine years later, Celine and Jesse met again, and they continued the conversation that they started almost a decade prior. It is a rare sequel that manages to stand above the original, but Before Sunset is just such a film. Like its predecessor, the film is short on plot and heavy on the dialogue, following Celine and Jesse through Paris as the latter kills time before flying back to the States; he has finished a book tour through Europe to promote his new novel, written about his encounter with Celine. But the conversation has changed in this continuation of the first film; they talk about how their lives unfolded in the interim between first meeting and reuniting. The change in the discussion is natural given the time that has gone by, and it’s challenging material for anyone, single or otherwise. The unflinching examination of relationships and unrequited love is told with incredible technical proficiency; it is shot in real-time using long, uninterrupted takes that go on for as long as seven minutes before cutting to a new shot. Capturing actors talking to each other for that long is a feat in itself, but doing so as said actors walk through a crowded city street is nothing short of a marvel. There may be films in this decade with more panache and flair, but I guarantee you will find few that boast the same level of technical artistry.

21. Primer: What would you do if you had a time machine? What would you try to change? Would you try to make the world a better place for mankind? Would you try to just make it a better place for yourself? Primer’s main characters, engineers Aaron and Abe, take the latter route. They decide, at first, to take advantage of the stock market, playing it like a violin using their knowledge of the future, but it doesn’t take long for them to succumb to the desire to try and mess with other aspects of their lives. Time loops and paradoxes arise, and things get complicated. In a good way. When a film like Primer gets confusing, one of two things happens: Either that confusion captivates its viewers or infuriates them. Primer succeeds in being engaging, nay absorbing, even when the concepts become too abstract for the non-scientific mind, though it requires you to pay attention even at its most indecipherable. Should you do so, you will be rewarded with an incredible, intricate, and evolving time travel yarn, perhaps one of the best ever spun. Maybe the real triumph of the film is that it looks like it was made for the combined dollar amount found in the wallets of the cast and crew; it’s a film propelled by little more than determination and imagination. There is a charm to the cobbled-together feel of the film (and truthfully Primer’s D.I.Y. tone is part of the point); like other entries on this list, films like Primer exist to showcase what people can do with talent and creativity in lieu of a studio budget.

That’s all for this entry. Keep an eye out for the next installment, 20-16, soon.

Ok, I had so much fun doing the Best 9 of ‘09 I figured why not do every other year in the Aughts (2000-2009) and then the best of those best! Best of the WHOLE decade! So I’ve done that. It got harder and harder as the years went back, especially considering I was pretty young in the year 2000. But I think I’ve come up with a pretty good list of my favorites (and least favorites!) from the past ten years.

We all know the joke about how it can be difficult to order the coffee today. Among the many gourmet coffee shops in another, perhaps Starbucks is known about (in) that gave us words such as "Venti", "cappuccino" and "spotted". For those who love coffee culture, its diverse and specialized jargon is part of its charm. For those who just want a cup of hot coffee to wake up in the morning, sometimes the last thing they need is a new language to learn.

Whether you are aself-proclaimed connoisseur of coffee or an old game, just give me a cup of coffee kind of person, one of the fastest and easiest ways to get great coffee at home is the only use for 'coffee. But like everyone else Coffee kits must learn the jargon, to make an informed decision about which system is better to do for you.
