Why is it that games make notoriously awful movies?

Previous, I wrote about movie games (I just gagged a bit) but let’s see about games being made into movies.

I’m an adventurous movie person and I’ll rarely often refuse to see a movie.  After all, with my Netflix account seeing bad movies for free is now just a matter of do I have time for them.  So let’s list a few of the more famous video game movies:

-Super Mario Bros

-Street Fighter

-Mortal Kombat

-Lara Croft: Tomb Raider

-Resident Evil (all of them)

-Silent Hill

-Dead or Alive

-Hitman

-Max Payne

And coming soon, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.

I’ve seen every single one of those (but never paid for them…and not by piracy ).  Now it may just be my opinion, but they were all awful.  First off, who thinks that a fighting game makes for a good movie script??  All it really does is allow for time-consuming high-stunted fight scenes.  I mean, let’s face it: video game movies are worse than their movie video game cousins.

Let’s think about why one would make a video game movie:

1)   You love the franchise: This is the one that most people claim but in reality not so much.  If you did, you wouldn’t butcher the good name of the game.

2)   You want to ride that cash cow: People loved the games.  Resident Evil, Street Fighter, and Mortal Kombat all have a huge following.  Why not make a movie to get those gamers to become viewers?  Imagine if you got every single person who played Halo to go see the Halo Movie.  Cha-ching.

3)   You’re Uwe Boll: I’m not going to say more because, to me, boxing is not the way to settle how someone critiques you on your work.

I’m just skeptical as to someone actually making a movie from a video game that isn’t dreadful in the fullest sense of the word.  I mean, we’ve got some big titles being made into movies: Bioshock, Prince of Persia, and Uncharted.

Let’s think about what could make these great:

1)   Sticking to the story/world: Many stories like to drive away from what makes the characters great: the story.  Making sure that the writers love and know the game is paramount.  And I’m not talking about “I have heard about it, read about it, and I think the idea is great”.  I’m talking about “I’ve played the game all the way through and talked with the developers for hours upon hours”.  That’s the kind of dedication I want to see

2)   No gimmicks or overkill with action: Yes, it’s awesome to see the fights of Mortal Kombat brought to life but come on.  You can’t have a movie survive on that alone.  You need something more than just that and it needs to be focused on, again, on the game.  See, Doom, first person perspective.

3)   Developer Interaction: It isn’t that hard.  The guys who know the most about the game are the ones that made it.  Talk with them, schmooze them, ask them questions, have a drink with them.  It couldn’t hurt.

That being said, I’m excited about Prince of Persia.  Bruckheimer is a guy I like but Disney? Eh.  I’m going to at least follow and see where things are going with it.  The trailer looks interesting (minus the crazy head sand whirwindy thing) and it is Jake Gyllenhaal.  I have high hopes.

Is there a way to salvage video game movies? Do you have the formula? Can anyone stop Uwe Boll???

Ieri, 28 noiembrie, am fost in excursie cu clasa mea si inca o clasa de a 10-a. Am fost la targul de carte si in loc de teatru, la film. Pe drum, faimoasa trupa de alternativ/metal/whatever rock iEdy si Lory ne-a cantat cateva (mai) melodii. La targul de carte am ajuns pe la 10-11 parca… nu mai stiu exact. Am fost singurul tâmpit (normal… mai exista altul ca mine? :> ) care a mers in tricou. Am colindat cu Sorin pe la toate standurile. Desi am pus ochii pe multe, mi-am luat foarte putine (multe fata de cate si-au luat toti ceilalti… cu mici exceptii). Mai exact, mi-am luat un mic ghid ortopedic si ortografic roman (cuvintele schimbate in doom… ca am ramas in urma), 2 carti legate de it (una legata de retele si una mai avansata pentru nu-stiu-ce) si doua romane – The host (Gazda) scrisa de Stephenie Meyer (aia care a scris si seria Twilight) si The lost symbol (Simbolul pierdut) de Dan Brown (ala care a scris Codul lui DaVinci si Ingeri si Demoni). The lost symbol vroiam sa o iau peste 2 luni cand aparea in romana, dar nu am putut sa astept si am luat-o in engleza (abia mai invat cate ceva). Din cate am vazut, este foarte interesanta. Totul pleaca de la un vechi document inchis intr-un seif al CIA in 1991, document in care este scrisa locatia unui portal catre un loc subteran. Personajul principal este aelasi ca si cel din romanele mai sus amintite – Roberd Langdon, un profesor care se ocupa de simboluri. Am mai observat ca se leaga de masoni si ritualurile lor, chiar si de fata ascunsa a acestora (secrete, istorie si altele). In fine… o sa ii fac un rezumat cand o sa-l termin de citit.

Dupa targul de carte, ne-am dus in mall la film. Am ajuns pe la 1:30 si nu am avut de ales decat intre New Moon si Iubire fara preaviz (parca asa se numea). La al 2-lea nu m-am dus pentru ca suna a film de dragoste d-ala siropos si nu avea rost ca nu prea e genul meu, asa ca m-am dus la New moon (de fapt nu m-as fi dus la niciunul… dar daca Andreea, Roxana si Alina se duceau si m-au tot batul la cap cu cateva zile inainte, impreuna cu Ade, ca e tare si ca merita vazut, m-am dus si eu sa-l vad). Filmul a fost ok… dupa mine povestea ar avea nota 8 din 10 (vampiri buni ce se indragostesc de fetite sweet), actorii ar avea 4 din 10 (si da Andreea… stiu ca Jacob e bun… mi-ai zis asta tot fimul… dar Ed si Bella au fost praf… mai bine era sora lui Ed in locul Bellei… mi se pare mai frumoasa)… ce mi-a placut la film? Pai… mi-au placut efectele, membrii din clanul Volturilor si partea in care cei doi indragostiti aleargau in slo-mo prin padure (pentru ca toate fetele salivau iar eu nu mai puteam din ras)…. scena parca era rupta din desene animate sau comedii proaste (andreea :> Inorogi, curcubee…. oooh… si floricele… ce sweet :-&). Ce m-a enervat… nu stiu… ar fi cam multe de spus… cel mai mult m-a enervat Bella… tot filmul si-a muscat buzele si si-a ros degetele. Pacat ca albu’ nu i-a facut nimic frigidei

In cora l-am vazut pe Romeo Fantastik. Am ras cu Sorin incontinuu… Era imbracat cu o bluza alba (mulata… ca sa se vada burta aia mare), blugi negrii (tot mulati), ochelari de soare, parul unsuros dat pe spate si ondulat la capete, cu o piranda dupa el si o pitzipoanca data cu var pe fata, machiata strident, toace pana-n gat,si buzitele roz iesit in afara de la atata munca cu gura. In fine… din descriere nu va puteti da seama cum arata si cat am ras. La un moment dat a trecut pe langa masa la care eram eu si radeam de nu puteam in spatele lui,si cred ca m-a auzit piranda ca s-a intors la mine. In clipa aia am inceput sa rad si mai tare.

Nu stiu cum a fost ziua de ieri pentru ceilalti, dar pentru mine a fost extraordinara. M-am simtit foarte bine si ma bucur ca am mai iesit si eu pe afara

PS: Ieri cand am iesit de la film am vazut un poster maaare cu Prince of Persia pe care scria “Coming soon!”. Abia astept

Para quem adorava os games, ai vem uma super produção e quem está bancando isso é a Disney, Prince of persia foi gravado no Marrocos (alem do cenário perfeito para o filme os impostos muito baixos) e teve seu lançamento adiado pois a primeira previsão de seu lançamento era pra julho de 2009, a nova data anunciada para seu lançamento é 28 de maio de 2010(quase um ano de diferença), na historia do filme o príncipe tenta ajudar seu pai a combater seus inimigos, quando encontra as areias do tempo, o príncipe devera então unir forças com a princesa Tamina para impedir que o vilão(um feiticeiro muito malvado) consiga roubar as areias do tempo.

O elenco traz Jake Gyllenhaal( o Jimmy bolha alguém lembra?) como o príncipe Dastan e Gemma Artenton (vamos dizer que muito exótica) como a princesa Tamina, Quem dirige a adaptação é Mike Newell(Responsável por Harry Potter E o Cálice de Fogo), com a produção de Jerry Bruckheimer(CSI, Trilogia Piratas do Caribe) e roteiro assinado por Jordan Mechner, o criador do jogo, o que nos faz pensar que o filme será fiel a trama do jogo e muito bom pois sua direção e produção tem um grande peso!

Pelo trailer o que pode se dizer é que teremos um filme onde um cara pula muito de um lado para o outro e os efeitos especiais estão perfeitos.

Uma observação:

Na minha humilde opinião ate hoje não foi produzido um filme baseado em historia de games PERFEITO, em alguns casos ate longe de serem BONS, todo mundo se lembra do fiasco que foi street fighter (aquele que o Guile era o Van Dame) e mortal combat que não chegaram nem perto de terem alguma qualidade, e logo depois Tomb Raider ( que não foi tão bom mas pelo menos trouxe Angelina Jolie pra nois EBAAAAA!!!), alguns filmes menos populares então fizeram pior ainda, a única exceção vai para final fantasy 7 advent children (uma animação japosa) que seguiu a linha do jogo contando a historia de Cloud anos depois de sua luta contra sephiroth,e que so foi boa por isso já que seu antecessor Final Fantasy: The spirits within foi totalmente Ruim, então só nos vale esperar.

To continue with the Prince of Persia series, here is my review on the next game.  I, however, made a mistake.  I played The Two Thrones, the 3rd installment of the series, before I could play Warrior Within, the 2nd installment of the series.  This is what happen when you’ve been out of video games for a while.  I actually thought there was only 2 PS2 games.  Oh well, here we go.

On the way home to Babylon, the prince find that it has been ravish by war.  He finds that the Vizer from Sands of Time is back and alive and is behind the war.  He is now set to find and destroy him.

The story is pretty good, it follows The Sands of Time structure almost to a tee.  This time the prince has some help at narrating this epic story.  It is narrated by his dead wife, himself, and his emerging dark side.

The gameplay is very similar to Sands of Time.  The acrobatic fighting system is back and just as good.  The blocking though, is frustrating, as it doesn’t always work, and when it does work, some enemies can knock you out of defense and you wouldn’t know about it until it’s too late since you are barraged with a slew of enemies.  Really the best defense is to just keep moving.

The movement and camera is also similar to Sands of Time, it is very fluid and you’ll hardly complain about it.

The graphic is better than Sands of Time, as it should, but it does one of the things that I absolutely hate, it mask some key obstacles to the points where you can’t see where you are suppose to go.  This is very frustrating, especially when you are in the new sand monster form.  You loose health every time you are in that form and you have no control of changing back.  The only way to counteract that is to kill and collect sand particles, which is hard to do if you don’t know where you are going.

The game is good, it has a nice storyline and good gameplay.  I did find some frustrating moments, like the fact that you can’t replenish your health unless you are at a save point and I feel like the save points are badly located.  Some times there’ll be save points 3 minutes apart, and other times they’ll be an hour apart with multiple battle and obstacle traps in between.  But it has also added a few elements that I thought were missing in the first game like bosses and the ability to sneak behind enemies.

Prince of Persia – The Two Thrones gets a 8.5 out of 10.

I have played this game since Friday – i had played the first assassins creed and i thought that it was a very original game. This 2nd game is very similar and just improves on the original game.

The missions are more varied and the gameplay is faster- especially the climbing. The graphics are good and the animation scenes really absorb you into the story.

Another good thing about this game is the way that you can gather more weapons such as swords, daggers, axes etc. Also there are some interesting new items such as smoke grenades which are good for evading enemies.You can assassinate guards in all sorts of ways which means you can be playing this for hours practising the perfect kill.

The game gets a real good balance of being a lone assassin but you can still fight with others and hire people to help you throughout the game. Another new feature is that you can swim.

Overall i think that this is a very good game- its better than the first. Well worth a try if you like games such as prince of Persia, tomb raider or the first assassins creed

Film Rating: 7.5/10

I am still a bit embarrassed about that title. Oh well, I’m sure it pleases a small subsection of my audience.

So there is a new Game Set Watch article up (by me!). It’s about the new Prince of Persia, sexualization in games (but especially Prince of Persia), and it is the lead-in for two more articles, that will follow shortly in its wake. But that’s just the beginning of it, as shown in the above quote. People really don’t like the Prince because he’s a dude. Now, I don’t mean like The Dude. I don’t mean like Dude Where’s My Car. I mean he’s the kind of guy who (when he isn’t philosophizing with a princess or being chased by evil gods) wants nothing more than money, drink, and companionship of his preferred sex.

And this pisses off a lot of people. It doesn’t piss them off because the hero is a heteronormative jerk who spends the first few hours of the game mocking someone who saves his life at regular intervals. Likewise, no one speaks out about the game’s simplistically written, stereotypically plotted Concubine, a woman scorned, of course, who takes her revenge in the throatiest voice possible. Is this what a powerful woman in a game is, especially when compared to the far from reprehensible Elika?**

This last should not be taken as a statement that the Prince is not an attractive (potentially) character to some players. In fact, to simply say that the Prince is an ass, therefore he is not worthy of the story/Elika/our time is reductive and misleading. It may be a common, annoying trope that the asshole is really a Nice Guy (and stems from a problematic assumption about male relationships with perspective female partners), but that, again, is not what people find alarming.

Su nueva pelicula, en la que comparte creditos con Tobey Maguire (Peter Parker en Spide-man) y con Jake Gyllenhaal, sin duda alguna Natalie lucia hermosa, perfecta en todo, desde el color del vestido, los zapatos y el maquillaje,  A+ para la actriz, Tobey Maguire asistio con su esposa luciendo mejor que en otros eventos, la cereza en el pastel se la llevo Jake quien no asistio a tan importante evento, tal vez Resee no le dio permiso!

Dulu tu dari kecil suka banged ngegame, heran deh.. umur 7 tahun udah main komputer xixixi  eranya DOS, WS dan Chiwiter gitu . Setahu aku ini game susah banged dah..  dikit-dikit bisa kena ranjau & tertusuk duri2 gitu, seingat aku sii sudah sampe level akhir2 gitu maininnya, level diistana begitu kalau ngga’ salah.. ya ampun pas masih SD kalii..

malah katanya ada versi Sony PSPnya gitu ? Playstationnya ada juga ngga, aduh kog jadi canggih banget yak ??

Malah habis lihat di Yahoo! malah yang terbaru ni ada filmnya..  Hm.. wah boleh juga ni. Sekalian nostalgia

Programado originalmente en 1985 y lanzado en 1989 para la plataforma Apple II, el diario de Mechner cubre siete años y medio de vivencias, antes, durante y después de este suceso en el mundo de los videojuegos, cuando pesaban tan sólo 340 kilobytes.

Los videos corresponden a la toma de los movimientos de “El Príncipe”, realizados por su hermano David corriendo en el estacionamiento de la editorial Reader’s Digest, en el segundo, corresponde a la programación de dichos movimientos mediante la técnica del rotoscopio.

The Making of Prince of Persia

One of the coolest videogames, and videogame franchises, of all time is hitting movie theaters on May 26, 2010 with Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.

The movie is somewhat loosely based on the 2003 Prince of Persia videogame of the same name that was released on last-gen consoles for PS2, Xbox 1, GameCube and PC. It would go on to spawn a trilogy with follow-up sequels Prince of Persia: The Warrior Within and Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones. The series would go on to get a current-gen Xbox 360/PS3 re-imagining simply titled “Prince of Persia“, as well as an Xbox Live Arcade remake of the 1989 original PC game called Prince of Persia Classic.

As such, this POP movie may be the first in a possible trilogy (if not more than a trilogy) and is being distributed by Disney and produced by Pirates of the Caribbean mastermind Jerry Bruckheimer. And directed by Mike Newell (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Mona Lisa Smile).

And that means that this film is gonna be one epic, big-budget, special effects, story-driven extravaganza that Disney is marketing as their follow-up to the 2 billion dollar+ grossing Pirates series. In fact they are going to push this film to exceed the Pirates series and are expecting it to make more money and be an even bigger success.

Impossible right? Well remember that Pirates of the Caribean wasn’t a big-name before the first film. But the game is a well known title to a quite large gaming audience.It is as well known to gamers as Assassin’s Creed, a game the movie also seems to emulate in some regards and another big franchise that Prince of Persia videogame publisher Ubisoft makes. So I think this film, especially if gamers come out to support it, could already have a massive built-in fanbase. So it’s certainly possible that this could be Disney’s next Pirates of the Caribbean especially with how great the film looks.

I am personally very impressed and I think that they are doing a perfect job in adapting the videogame into a film. They are staying true enough to the game to attract the gaming audience that has played it while also pulling in fans of the Pirates of the Caribbean films who are looking for another epic, adventure-soaked, fun romp that is both family-friendly and also full of action. This just may be the film that breaks video-game-based-movies into the big-time.
