Summer is such a fun time. School is out, kids have more time to play at home, and families are going on vacations. While your kids are home, give them some imaginative toys to play with. These are our favorite dress up costumes that provide hours of imagination and fun. My kids wear these more than their “regular” clothes.

My Cute Dressups fancy Rapunzel dress up costume

Girls Fancy Rapunzel Dress Up

There is my personal favorite which is fancy Yellow Beauty Costume. I like it because it’s so beautiful and little girls look so cute it in and because it is just a stunning dress whether you are going to Disneyland, have a princess party planned, or just for every day fun.

Of course, there’s the classic favorite super fancy Cinderella Dress Up Costume. Little girls love the silver embellishments which makes this dress a favorite with small and big princesses alike!

Fancy Cinderella Dress Up Costume

Whine: The other day Big Sis looked me in the face and said, “Mom, what are those cracks aroun

Whine: The other day Big Sis looked me in the face and said, “Mom, what are those cracks around your eyes?” Hrmph. And followed that with, “And what are those little bumps all over your face?” Double hrmph. I sent her straight to bed with no supper and went to get a facial.

Cheese: I got the “day off” yesterday so I could attend a conference. It’s been so long since I got dressed up (read: not sweatpants/t-shirt) and had a nice lunch (read: not covered in cheerios, not sharing my food wth someone else, not being spat upon) that I almost didn’t even notice the awesome speaker and workshops. (But truthfully, Priscilla Shirer spoke. I found her delightful and inspirational and hilarious–and all after having had a baby just four weeks ago!)

I grew up mostly on my own. With no sisters or brothers to call my own, I spent a lot of time playing with Barbies and going door to door in my apartment complex looking for friends, which in retrospect seems highy inadvisable. But then one day something amazing happened. I got sisters. Four of them. And I never looked back.

Years have passed, and between the five of us sisters we’ve had seven kids in seven years. All but one of which are girls. It’s really quite ridiculous, actually. Can you imagine Christmastime in our family? Fluffy piles of princess dresses and tangled up dollar store jewelry, accompanied by the click-clack click-clack of little plastic high heels (aka “fancy shoes). Lots of tea parties, playing mommy and dancing in their fancy clothes. Girls will be girls, won’t they?

But, oh, that one boy. He’s the oldest of the bunch. And for a kid up against odds like that, he navigates the waters very well and in the process has completely captured Big Sis’ heart. As soon as she learned to talk, she learned to say his name. “Kee-gan.” So the other day Big Sis rediscovered her dolls. She asked me the doll’s name, and I told her she could name it whatever she wanted. So of course the baby doll in the pink dress and hat is now named after her seven-year-old boy cousin.

Yesterday when we were painting, she insisted that I paint a picture of him. Since I paint about as well as Rasha the Painting Pachyderm (and make a lot less money), I was hoping to pacify her by paintng a picture of his head. But she told me he needed legs. I asked if he needed arms too. She said “Yes, to hug me with.”

And the other day we were talking about Auntie S who’s getting married soon. Big Sis decided that she wanted to get married, too. Her daddy was quick to remind her that little girls don’t get married until they are Much, Much Older. To which she replied, “Yeah, and when Keegan’s older too.” Sigh. If he’s her picture of what a good man looks like, I’m pretty sure I couldn’t ask for better.

Speaking of cousins, today is Fancy Nancy’s (aka Daphne) birthday. She turns FOUR YEARS OLD today, so she gets a very special whine and cheese birthday shoutout. (She’s old enough for whine, right?) Happy birthday, little niece. Your spirit and creativity delight. Your dedication to FSU football (including doing the tomahawk chop at an inappropriately young age) inspires. Your playfulness and care for your little sister blesses others (especially your tired mommy). Your ability to memorize every line, every costume, and every movement from Cinderella so you can make Mommy and Daddy reenact it in the middle of a restaurant amuses the rest of us. Here’s to many more years of princess dresses and dollar-store jewelry. We love you and happy birthday!

Dad left early this morning in what was meant to be a normal car shuttle service, but a stretch limo

Dad left early this morning in what was meant to be a normal car shuttle service, but a stretch limo turned up! The driver had someone to pick up at the airport when he dropped Dad off. Silly Dad got in the front with the driver so he could gas-bag all the way to the airport. No dramas with A & E when they woke up. We got ready and went straight to the Post Office to pick up princess dresses that Dad had ordered off the internet. Then over to the gym creche and swimming lessons for A.

It was very hot today so the dresses went on and off all afternoon. A & E were playing out the front with their umbrellas, when asked what they were up to A says “we’re tending to walk with one leg”. Mum realised they had seen someone at the pool with crutches!

They put their dresses back on and played “sleeping beauty” on next door’s front lawn, waking each other up with a kiss! E told me “I got jelly in my crown” (a jewel) and A practiced dancing and “ski-ding on the ice”. At bath time E let the plug out and splashed the last bit of the water and told me she was “Like Happy Feet”, A told me Happy Feet was a movie they watched at Nanny’s- just in case I didn’t know what E was talking about.

A & E were a nightmare to put to bed tonight because it was still really hot at bedtime, I think it was 20 times Mum had to put E back into her bed! T loved splashing in the bath tonight. He was very thirsty and Mum extracted herself from him, 45 mins was long enough!

Would you think me a horrible mother if I told you that the REAL reason I cover my face when my children are saying thier prayers is because I don’t want them to see me laughing? This one child in particular cracks me up. I know, it’s just plain wrong. You’re going to laugh too. Then we’ll both be wrong.

Thing 2(6yog): “And Dear Lord please forgive us for all of the things we did and said that were not good today, and please forgive us for all of the bad things that we are about to do.”

Thing 2 “Jesus please bless my aunt Tina and help her not to be sad and help her to find a new racecar boyfriend who makes her happy. And please give her lots of princess dresses, *and me too, because pretty dresses make everyone SO happy. Especially meee.”
(But not so much her Aunt Tina ~ who would rather take 6 kids under 10 to chuckee cheese by herself than wear a ‘pretty princess dress. Have you ever tried to do that? Definently NOT something I would recommend. Ever. As in..to infinity and beyond NEVER. Just so you know how strongly I feel about this issue. Did I mention the word never yet? Okay, had to make sure.)

My sister doesn’t have a ‘racecar’ boyfriend. In case the suspense is killing you. He drives an RX7. I think. I can’t really remember. I know that it’s yellow. ish. Or maybe gold. Although.. he does resemble Jeff Gordon. But he’s good people so we try to overlook that. He is NOT a Gordon fan. That helps. SHE is. I guess that helps too. Well, it helps him anyway.

I think it’s awesome that my children are just themselves before God. No pretenses. Just what’s in their true heart. The honesty in it just makes it that much sweeter. But I bet He’s laughin too:)

That is way too cute! I often find myself trying to supress a giggle when my little ones are praying too, especially my two-year-old! (In fact, I was just thinking this morning how I wanted to write a post on this very thing!)
Anyway, I have enjoyed reading your very witty posts… I have laughed and found myself wondering how we could have such similar lives and experiences. Must be the fact that we both have lots of little ones, we homeschool and we LOVE it!!
Blessings,

That is so great. My son (2yr) just started trying to say his own prayers, nothing is really understandable except “Jesus” and “Amen” but it’s still cute. My favorite thing is how he wants to pray whenever, not just before meals, and he includes his 6 month old sister in on it too.

My daughter is just about five years old. She is a charming, loving, and smart, and knows what she

My daughter is just about five years old. She is a charming, loving, and smart, and knows what she wants. However, this stage we are going through now has me completely turned upside down. She breathes, sleeps and talks Princess– changing into Princess dresses that people have given to her immediately when she gets home from school. The other day I thought I would fall over, grief-stricken, when she was dancing around and singing, “I’m a Barbie, I’m a Barbie.” My partner overheard and gave me a big smile, saying without having to say, “it’s time you heal the princess within.”

The other day she talked about Princesses having long nails. I muttered, “There are plenty of princesses that have short nails.”

She answered, “No there is not. We are just pretending.”

In the parent-teacher conference the other day they even said, “The Princess thing is a little over the top.” I exclaimed, “I know, and she doesn’t even watch TV.”

So where is she getting it? The other girls, bill boards for more Disney films we see on the way to school, viewing Disney schlock at her Auntie’s house. What little she has watched has made a major impact on her psyche. Are the pictures, and discussion amongst her friends tapping into the archetypal? Or is my being a hairstylist and applying lipstick before I walk out the door contributing to her fantasies? It appears there are lots of factors.

How long will this go on though? I will be styling hair for the foreseeable future. I’ve got to find a way to ask her about it, to have dialogue with her. Otherwise, I will, as I have before, toss out anything smells of Princess in the wee hours of the morning while she sleeps.

Is this a sign of our times? I just don’t remember identifying with princesses when I was her age. The advertising, marketers have beat this one into the ground, and for what? I’m saddened at the loss of their own pictures rather than Disney pictures in their head. I’m saddened at the ways I contribute to keeping this story alive for her as well.
