Hubby & I have a unique travel tradition.

We buy a couple of standard snack items that come with us on every single trip we take. These items get stowed away in our hotel room so we don’t need to run out every time we want a snack.

I honestly have no idea how this tradition really started.  It’s uniquely interesting because 2 of the standard food items are not items that we normally snack on at home.  I can’t explain this behavior, much like I usually cannot explain hubby’s male traits. But hey, they are what they are… so I accept them.

So you might be wondering, what are these snack items?

Well, one is a tube (or quite possibly 2 tubes – if that’s the right packaging description?) of Pringles.  The flavors may vary but I always buy them to pack in our luggage on every vacation.  Maybe I initially started with Pringles because they are packaged in a way that allows me to stuff them into our bag without finding myself with a crushed bag full of crumbs or, perhaps it’s because it’s easy to grab a mini stack of 5 or so to have a quick snack.  Either way, Pringles always come with us on a trip.

The 2^nd item is a large package of twizzlers.  I’d have to assume once again, that I was applying some sort of logic at one point when I decided what the “travel snacks” would be.  These are easy to grab & easy to pack… and hubby loves them.

So, I got to thinking recently that perhaps the biggest reason I’ve decided on these 2 particular snacks is because they are easily rationed.

Rationed??   Yes…. .rationed.

In order for me to get my fair share (you could also probably read this as any) of the travel snacks, I need to make sure hubby hasn’t eaten them all in one sitting.  Years ago, we used to operate on basic consumption trust but then I realized that on day 3 of vacation, the snacks that were designed to last all week, were almost gone.  So, he forced me to do something I never wanted to do.   I felt like that mom that says to her 4 year old “if you can’t share, I’m going to take it away from you.”  So, while I certainly didn’t want to take them away… I had no choice but to react.  And, since we’re in a foreign place and I cannot run to the store to buy more twizzlers.  I was forced to put him on a strict twizzler allocation. And… he thinks he’s sneaky, but I know that, sometimes if I’m not paying close attention, he’ll sneak extras… so I have to be on full alert at all times!

A replay of our absurd twizzler conversation…

Hubby: “Can I have some twizzlers?”

Me: “How many have you had today?”

Hubby: “I’m not sure”

Me: “You’re not sure, or you don’t want to tell me?”

Hubby: “Uhm….”

Me: (getting the package from the dresser) “Babe, this package is half empty.. I think I’ve eaten like 3 of them since we got here”

Hubby: “Well, how many can I have?”

Me: “Probably none… not until I catch up.”

Hubby: (whining) “Come on… I want some now”

Me: “Ok, take a few, but just remember that if I don’t get any, you owe me!”

Hubby: “You don’t eat them fast enough”

Me: “Am I gonna have to start hiding snacks on vacation like I do at home?”

Hubby: “No, just eat faster”

At this point I’ve removed a few twizzlers from the package and I’m whipping hubby with them……

Hubby: “Owww.. stop hitting me”

Me: “You don’t like this do you…. Then, stop eating all the twizzlers”

Hubby: “Please just give them to me”

Me: “You can have these but, if you don’t comply with the allocation rules, the twizzlers are going into the safe with our passports and I’m not telling you the combination.  I may also hide the beer from the mini bar if you don’t shape up!”

Hubby: “Ok, ok…. You win, I’ll share the twizzlers..”

Aha!  I found the magic solution to ensure I had my share of twizzlers…. All I had to do was threaten the loss of beer… Wow, I wished I’d learned this lesson years ago!

So I saw the ad for Morrisons where they were advertising Buy One Get Two Free on Pepsi 1lt and Pringles. I’ve worked with retailers for many years so know how much they love the Buy One Get One Free (BOGOF) and how much suppliers really don’t. It’s the old problem of increasing volume at the expense of value. So what an earth are they thinking with BOGTF? Apart from the fact that it doesn’t slip off the tongue nearly as easily as BOGOF (go on, give it a try), I cannot see how this is going to drive basket spend or sales value for either of the suppliers or Morrisons.

And my mystification got deeper when I went to my local Morrisons to have a look at the promotion. I was thinking it was a loss leader to drive footfall into store so was expecting some posters in the carpark or at least in the entrance. Nothing. Apart from a pallet of After Eights at 50% off which seemed to be selling.

Nothing as I wandered round the store until I actually made it into the crisps aisle and then a small shelf barker with the promo message on it. And very few people buying Pringles. The same in the soft drinks category. Very little song and dance about the promotion – and I even saw someone buying 6 bottles of Coca Cola and totally ignoring the Pepsi.

So I’m left confused. A major promotion like this with tv advertising again falls down at point of purchase – or maybe that was the point. It will be really interesting to see how the Xmas sales figures for the supermarkets stack up and if this has got extra shoppers into Morrisons.

Il recentissimo spot televisivo  delle patatine  Pringles   presenta la nuova confezione da 150 g che contiene ben  80 pezzi.

Lo spot non lo dice, ma basta leggere  l’etichetta per rendersi conto che le patatine nel tubo rosso contengono anche  51 g di grassi e oli vegetali. La parola vegetale non deve però illudere, perché quando si usano oli di pregio come mais, girasole e arachide si scrive sull’etichetta.

Quando compare la parola generica “vegetale” vuol dire che le materie prime sono di mediocre qualità come il grasso di palma e cocco. Osservando la lista degli ingredienti si scopre che  le patatine sono ottenute da materie prime in polvere (farina di patate, farina di riso, amido e maltodestrine ricavate dalla farina di frumento).

L’unico additivo è l’emulsionante E 471 corrispondente ai mono e digliceridi degli acidi grassi alimentari, necessario per amalgamare gli ingredienti con i grassi  vegetali. La porzione di Pringles consigliata dal produttore è di 25 g e copre il 12% del fabbisogno giornaliero di lipidi!

Nelle Pringles Hot Spicy gli ingredienti triplicano: perchè ci sono una decina di sostanze  aromatiche tra cui yogurt in polvere e pomodoro in polvere,  2 coloranti come l’estratto di peperoncino verde piccante e la paprika, e 5  acidificanti tra cui polvere di aglio e proteine del latte.

I nutrizionisti considerano prodotti come le Pringles cibo spazzatura, perchè hanno troppi ingredienti, troppi grassi e troppo sale. Chi però  è irresistibilmente attratto potrebbe orientarsi solo occasionalmente sulle patatine tradizionali: la quantità di grassi e  di sale è simile, ma gli ingredienti sono solo tre: patate vere, olio e sale.

I found brief thoroughly enjoyable and a real slap on the chops for the real world. I am in my third year of studying Design, Branding and Marketing, with experience in pitching our ideas to my tutors from industry and my peers, but this was different. I presented to the company, dragon den stylee. Very nerv-racking but dam it felt good. The key thing is to remember when presenting is just have fun, if you believe in what you are pitching it should come naturally.

The following is my point of sale…would love to hear your feedback:

With my adapted logo and strapline, I have created a point of sale that will be positioned at the end of the shopping isle between the snacks and beverages, in the bee line for those males wanting to create the ultimate lads night.

If you been reading my blog for a while, you’ll  know that there are a lot of Pringles flavors coming out all the time in Japan. I think they’re starting to run out of ideas for new names for the, because these latest two are a little bit strange. Like this one, “Night Star”.

Or how about “Rock The Floor”!?

In terms of flavor they were both good. The top one being a “nothing special” cheese flavor. The second on having a delectable Thai red curry taste. Mmmm yummy!

The Mortal Kombat series, probably better known for its violent array of finishing moves, exaggerated display of blood, and curiously inconsistent misuse of the letter “K” than its actual gameplay contributions to the fighting genre, continues on in this third installment, aptly titled Mortal Kombat 3 (in contrast to, say, the Street Fighter series, which failed to demonstrate its ability to count past the number two until around the ninth installment or so, depending on whether the Street Fighter EX series counts).

So what’s different this time around?

• More characters.
• Multi-tiered levels.
• Umm…a “dash” button.
• Wait, you can turn into an animal, too, which is kinda neat I guess.
• What the…who the hell is this Stryker guy? He looks like some ex-frat guy working as a bike messenger. Or someone’s dad.
• Cyborgs.

Stryker will fuck you up for some Pringles.

Alright, so what’s the same?

• A handful of old characters, most with the same moves as in the previous two games.
• An oddly large amount of blood spewed forth every time you punch someone in the face.
• UPPERCUTS.
• Character sprites are still stretched vertically, which makes them look a bit taller and leaner when fighting, but unnervingly short when you knock them down.
• Cheap AI.
• ADDITIONAL UPPERCUTS.
• My general lack of skill and disdain.

Defeated by myself, proving yet again that I am my own worst enemy. Especially when wearing a mask and wielding iron hooks...no wonder no one wants a hug.

If I recall correctly (unlikely, but possible), the game was still fairly successful, helping keep Midway more or less in the black for another few years. Of course, Midway banked too much on the arcade market for too long, as well as trying to continue to milk what they could from their old arcade franchises well past the point at which people stopped caring about them. There’s obviously more to their demise, but that’s a topic better covered elsewhere. I’m mainly just here to pick apart old, defenseless video games and yell at fictional characters, and my qualifications as to those are questionable at best. My parents must be so proud.

In Inghilterra, dove sui prodotti alimentari  si cominciano ad usare le etichette “a semaforo”, le Pringles meriterebbero due luci rosse su tre, perché contengono troppo sale e il 33% di grassi (51 g in un tubo da 150 g). Il problema è tipico di molti snack salati classificati  per questo motivo dai nutrizionisti come cibo spazzatura.Focalizziamo adesso l’attenzione sulle Pringles rice infusions (tubo nero) realizzate con il 28% di farina di riso e definite “meno birichine” rispetto alle Pringles original (nel tubo rosso), perché il riso assorbe il 30% di grassi in meno durante la cottura.

Basta però spostare l’occhio sulla tabella nutrizionale posizionata a pochi centimetri di distanza, per scoprire  che la minor capacità di assorbire grassi delle Pringles rice infusions rispetto alle Pringles Original, si traduce in 6 kcal in  meno per ogni porzione da 25 g.

La beffa è che il tubo di Pringles rice infusions assorbe  il 30% in meno di grassi ma pesa 10 g in più,  per cui   complessivamente ha più calorie ! L’altro aspetto sconcertante delle  Pringles rice infusions è la scelta de caratteri tipografici per l’elenco degli ingredienti. La necessità di  proporre le diciture in 12 lingue  senza rinunciare alle foto, si traduce nell’uso di nanocaratteri tipografici. La trasparenza nell’indormazione raggiunge il massimo del minimo nel box rosso con i valori nutrizionali dove non si legge praticamente nulla. Complimenti!

L’unica indicazione ben visibile riguarda il peso 160g.  Questa però non è una scelta aziendale, ma un obbligo della legge che stabilisce la grandezza dei caratteri.

In these days of economic crisis, I see signs like this in all the shops. Buy Me, I’m Irish. Irish grown. Support Irish industries. P.S. – We’re Irish. Hey, Mr. Cowen!, emblazoned on a Burger King Recession Special bus stop ad. Some of the stores even list Irish-made products separately on receipts so buyers can see how much money they’ve contributed to the national economy. 

When I see signs like this, I’m torn. I want to help Ireland’s economy, I do. But is it even more important for me to buy American while living abroad? If the global economy weren’t suffering, I’d obviously go for only Irish products in the spirit of delicious acclimation to my new environment. But things are different now. Surely I should go for the Pringles, not the Taytos. The Sam Adams, not the Murphy’s. As an American, it must be my duty. 

But the products are priced higher than they are back home. And they’re in Euro to boot.

Help me, Uncle Sam. I don’t know what to do.

Maybe I’ll just let Sean do the grocery shopping from now on.

the title says it all. what was everyone for Halloween? i hope everyone had as much fun as myself and friends did this year. we ended up celebrating in Athens, Ohio for their insane bazillion people Halloween extravaganza. people were running a muck in costumes throughout the streets. below is a vid someone took and put on youtube to show how many people were there.

i’m interested in what YOU were for Halloween. we saw some amazing costumes this past weekend, but we were WAY too sloppy to carry around my friends expensive DSLR and not let it get destroyed.

I am a junk-food lover.  My favorite is Potato Chips – from local to imported brands, I love to munch on this junkie.  I love Kettle Chips in Salt and Pepper Flavor, Ruffles,  Lays and Original Flavor of Pringles.  Recently, I’ve discovered a new Pringles flavor which is the “Screamin’ Dill Pickle” Flavor.  I lav et!!! It has a sour taste which is obviously because it’s pickle flavor. Haha!  But it’s something new that’s why I like it.  Far from the usual salty flavored potato chips. Try it! =)

I have enjoyed the extensively modified potato chip that is the Pringle for many years. My favorite flavor is a toss up between sour cream and onion and salt and vinegar. Imagine my amusement when my cousin and I were cruising Carrefour and saw these babies on sale for SGD4.80 for 2 cans.

At first the grilled shrimp and seaweed flavors didn’t phase me too much since I’ve had seaweed flavored things before and I love a nice salty bag of shrimp chips. Then my cousin explained that the real kicker is that all of these flavors would be on top of that distinctive crispy crumbly Pringles chip.

Then I got a little worried.

But I bought two cans anyway because hey you gotta live a little.

I settled on the soft shell crab and the grilled shrimp. The shrimp for sure was coming home since the chip was straight up pink. The seaweed stayed behind since, like I said, I’ve had plenty of seaweed flavored things before. My cousin was hoping I would forget about taste testing them when we got home. But I thought of all of you dear readers and journeyed onward.

The grilled shrimp ones are in fact pink and in fact taste shrimpy. Not as shrimpy as, say, shrimp chips but nearly. They are not as salty and the chip itself is not as crispy. Not sure if this is due to the ridiculous humidity, an older tube of chips, or the flavoring they use.

Sadly, the soft shell crab was not interesting looking in the least. Typical plain looking chip without even a speck of fake herbs or seasoning. I don’t quite understand why it’s specifically soft shell crab but it actually tasted like dried squid. You know the kind that you get in the bag from the grocery store that is kinda stringy. That’s the aroma and the taste you get.

If I had to eat one of the two I think I would eat the soft shell crab even if it is poorly selected flavor name. And that concludes our trip down Pringles lane.

I’ve overloaded my system with potatoes the whole day.. I’ve had a banana and a piece of green pears for breakfast but I was too lazy to prepare anything for lunch..

I bought three loaves of multigrain bread two days ago but I’d rather keep them frozen for the time being just so its fresh.. Or I was just making an irrational excuse why I could not get my feet to stand up and my hands to open the fridge, toast some slice and spread some soya cheese.. Either way, indeed it was a very lazy day..

Or! Maybe, because I bought 20 canisters of Pringles and I stocked them all in my room, that made me too lazy to prepare a real food for a decent meal.. Yes.. No other reason’s out there.. I was just really lazy..

See? This is what I hate about going to the grocery store.. I always ignore my list and end up buying instant products like noodles, canned beans, canned fruits or chips, and I know it’s not healthy at all..

One time, I was at the counter with a cart full of instant cheesy macaroni and canned pineapple chunks, and the old guy next in line told me, “Yeah, typical bachelor’s meal, eh?”.. I should have given him a nod but he blurted, “Oh boy, you remind me of my younger days, and now I was this big because of that”, pointing to my groceries.. That’s scary.. I don’t wanna be a 500-pounder brown hobbit.. Not with my height or people would ask me, “Oh great Buddah, is that you? I didn’t realize you’re Southeast Asian?”..

One more thing, I haven’t had ginger ale for a long time, but when I did my groceries few days back, I bought four cans of those organic brands and now I am beginning to have my gastroacidity back.. I didn’t realize that though it is organic, the ale’s still carbonated and I haven’t had such thing for quite a time..

Maybe, I should cut spendings on my grocery shopping and I’ll save the Pringles for Halloween.. Atleast, it’s more than the usual chocolate bars or candies and the kids will surely be happy.. Or I should just not do grocery shopping at all.. That means savings and I think it works better that way..

I’m full and I know, it is because of my foolishness.. And because it is winter time, I should go back to the gym soon to avoid having winter weight.. I haven’t gained weight since last year, but I just wanna make sure that what I’m eating is right and that I maintain a healthy lifestyle.. Maybe a Kung Fu class would help, basketball works fine but hey, I don’t have that many buddies to play even a 3-on-3.. Squash sounds cool too, but first, I have to learn how to play the game.. Or bowling..

By tomorrow, I should have fresh tomatoes and broccoli, and there’s no reason why I should be lazy..

And oh, by the way, give me a shoutout if you want Pringles.. I have 17 canisters in 5 different flavors sitting in my room and I am ready to give it for free..

Here’s a couple strange Pringles flavors of late. They’re supposedly inspired by large American cities. The first being called “New Yorker’s Street” Cheese Dog flavor.

I basically tasted like cheese flavor Pringles. The other is “Los Angeles Street” BBQ Chicken.

I had no idea Los Angeles was known for BBQ chicken. I visited there a few years ago and never once had BBQ chicken. Lots of Mexican food, but no BBQ chicken.

It is lunch time for me.  I was getting a little weak and weary so I decided to have some lunch.  Just a sliced chicken sandwich with a slice of cheese.  290 calories.  And some Pringles,  I don’t think that it’s even a full serving size since its the end of the bag and all I got a crumbs! About 100 calories.   I’ve got such a hankering for some grapes.  I was going to walk to the supermarket since it’s so beautiful out, but I’ve got a lot going on today.

Adam and I decided to have some turkey burgers for dinner.  We buy the turkey meat ourselves and we get the 93% lean.  Then we use our slider maker, the one that’s advertised in the informercials, and we make cute little burgers.  Usually top them off with some cheese.  I even found slider rolls at the supermarket! I can only eat about 2 or 3 of them.  But they are good.  I didn’t think that I would like turkey meat, but it’s really not that terrible.  We haven’t had beef tacos in forever. 

I’ve been working on a budget for Adam and I to follow starting November 1st.  Hopefully, it will help us to put away some money for the wedding.  We try very hard not to spend frivalously.  But I have a shopping addiction, and it’s pretty serious.  I like to shop when I’m bored, or sad.  I’m bored a lot too.  I’m a crazy impluse shopper.  I definitely grab things when I’m going through the check out.  I’ve been a lot better since moving in with Adam though.  I try to buy things that I know I will use more than once. 

Ah well, I probably won’t update tonight.  Adam and I didn’t get a chance to watch Transformers 2 last night.  I was far too exhausted, but tonight! I will watch it with him.  I promised.  So I will see you all tomorrow morning!

Credit where credit is due. This advert is funny, engaging and entertaining – and it manages to get in a sly poke at the legions of frustrated bedroom musicians hooked on Guitar Hero at the same time. I originally didn’t realise there was a full length version until I caught it during School of Rock this evening. Pringles could learn something from this. Kudos.
