December 3, 2009- The weak economy and changing demographics are now placing more pressure than ever

December 3, 2009- The weak economy and changing demographics are now placing more pressure than ever on colleges and universities to compete effectively for new enrollments. Many institutions are struggling with the demands of managing inbound information requests from online, print, email and phone sources.

The silver lining for printers is that US post-secondary institutions are expected to spend over $2 billion with marketing service providers by the year 2010, an increase of $1 billion since 2006, this according to the advisory firm Outsell Inc. As the internet has become one of the primary ways that prospective students gather information and express interest in a particular school, many institutions are looking for CRM systems that can manage leads from print to email and even social networks. While use of social networks like Facebook and MySpace has become an important part of the overall communication effort, using these mediums requires a very deft touch, as students don’t want to feel like they’re being marketed to.

Moreover, colleges have learned they need to tailor messages to specific student interests, and they have to segment their outreach based on the types of niches that come up in their CRM systems.

Many educational marketers encourage post-secondary institutions to focus on the needs of the adult student in a weak economy, as this group seeks to freshen their current skills or even shift to another career. This trend also requires that institutions understand and market to specific student interests/needs, which are quite different among adult students.

Takeaway for printers- Independent adult and on line schools and the same divisions of larger institutions are great targets for your integrated marketing techniques.

This morning I needed to print a small handful of pdfs (Portable Document File) for something I’m working upon. Here are the results:

Looks fine, doesn’t it. But it’s not. Not by a mile

Printing from my laptop to the Wi-Fi enabled HP C7280 all-in-one I could hear the device clicking and whirling while it outputted my documents. When I went over to the printer to retrieve them I discovered that they had not printed on 8.5×11-inch sheets of standard paper, but upon 6×4-inch HP Advanced Photo paper!

The last time I used the printer was for printing some pictures I had taken of my parents while they were visiting over the Thanksgiving holiday. What I had not noticed, and had no reason to suspect would occur, was that the settings for the printer were for printing 6×4-inch pictures and not 8.5×11-inch documents.

Never mind that nobody prints their pdfs on picture paper. So why would the C7280 assume such? It is rather a mystery.

I had to go into the Properties section of the print screen and make the requisite adjustments so that the printer would print properly, but I find this whole experience rather peculiar. I have printed pictures on numerous occasions and then turned round and printed documents (but maybe not pdf documents) without running into such difficulties.

I guess the lesson here is never take anything for granted when it comes to printers.

One of the more popular type of posts on this blog, I note by my stats, are those dealing with the p

One of the more popular type of posts on this blog, I note by my stats, are those dealing with the practical use of printers.

So, let it be known that today I completed the manual and installation of a new printer at our primary Circulation workstation.

We’d been using a Star SP542 dot-matrix receipt printer, as at the time we needed to get one, we were hoping to eventually get permission to print money receipts for fines (instead of expensive 19th century receipt books). State auditors insist on sequentially-numbered receipts (it’s a rule, period, no debate permitted, so no use telling me reasons not to do it). Thermal printing doesn’t hold up over time, so we needed receipts that would last if we did them for fines, etc.

Frankly, we’ve found the dot matrix to have cleaning problems — lots of cut paper scraps get into the works, and you have to remove the ribbon, then remove a plate and vacuum it out weekly to keep it from jamming up.

Anyway, since the money receipt printing has fallen through (don’t ask), we don’t need long-term printing. We switched to a Star TSP650 (aka 654 the cutter model) printer, which uses only thermal paper, no ribbon.

The manual is at http://libcat.uafortsmith.edu/screens/man_starTSP650printer.html and it covers the setup for use with Millennium Circulation.

Now, the printer driver either lets you do very short slips with no graphics, or — as we selected — 200mm long slips with a big logo at the top, that are actually easier for everyone to handle. Also, if somebody sticks them in the book pocket, it makes them easy to fish out.

Using 8 point font for legibility means the last digit of the year is cut off on each line. A smaller font becomes too hard to read. The actual date is printed in full at the top just under the logo, anyway, so the year should be obvious.

Since it doesn’t completely cut (“partial cut” meaning one little bit in the middle is left, so one tug will free it), the paper doesn’t leave little scraps, which should avoid a lot of cleaning problems. No ribbon.

The “receipt” selection (instead of 200mm length) just runs out paper forever, until you turn it off. Since the 200mm works well for us, we’ll stick with that for the time being.

How To Choose The Proper Printers For You Home

by Matthew Kerridge hosted by Bruce Oliver

There are a variety of printers on the market, each of them have different functions. I am going to show you how to choose the printer that best suits your needs. First we need to determine what you are going to be using your printer for exactly. Do you want to make beautiful photographs with it, or perhaps you need to can scan documents. I am going to narrow down the features of each printer for you.

Printers are not just for printing out plain documents anymore. You can use your printer to produce gorgeous digital photographs and things like business letters and business cards. Printer manufactures have made it easy for those of us who need professional items printed. You can print anything from marketing reports to personal newsletters with pictures with the help of a printer.

One of the most interesting inventions of today is the all in one printer. It does the work of five separate machines, but is housed in one unit. It is a telephone with a fax machine, it is a scanner and a copier, and of course it does print. You need to just ask yourself if you need all of those features, then decide if you want to purchase one or not.

If you do not need all the features of the multifunction printer, you could always purchase a simple printer. The ink jet printer is the perfect choice. Before you purchase this kind of printer have the sales person do a demonstration for you, this way you can see how fast or slow the printer is, and how clear the documents or photographs come out. It is very important to check the price of the ink jet cartridges. You will need a one black and one color cartridge. Replacement ink cartridges can be very expensive, but you can comparison price for those.

Now that we have gone over the ink jet printer, let us take a look at the laser printer. The laser printers are faster than the ink jet. Maintaining them is easy, and it is said that the laser printer has a longer life than the inkjet printer. The laser printer is more expensive to manufacture because of the technology that is used, so it is only natural that it will cost more than the ink jet printer.

Let us go back in time to the dot matrix printer. The dot matrix printer was one of the first printers available to purchase. These are very and slow, some even say that they are antiquated in comparison to the inkjet printers that have current technology. There are three cons to purchasing the dot matrix and those are these printers are slow and noisy, and the print they produce is okay. This printer was great when it was popular, but with all the new technology we have today, the dot matrix would be the last on my list to buy.

At this point you have enough information about the different printers to make a well informed decision to purchase. Some of the printers we discussed are more expensive than the others. It is just a matter of comparison shopping until you find the one you want that you can afford, and the one that will be the most useful to you. Also consider the cost of the replacement cartridges because those can be pricey as well. You can find sales on replace cartridges all the time.

When I read that I wrote for the Polaroid PoGo some hilarious pictures shot in my head as people go around with pogo sticks with cameras attached to them.
Unfortunately, technology has advanced so much fun to do and that to exist. So I went to the Internet and find out what really was and to be honest I was surprised. You can view your photos and then print them there and then. The documents that print is a kind of big stick when you pull the plastic and has me thinking about all forms of entertainment that could use it.
But when I told my friend over, he went out and bought a house and went to find his wife cheating. The hid and took a photo of a woman having sex with another person. It was destroyed, and returned to tell me everything.
We decided that we should know that we knew it was fraud, but simply `t seem enough to walk and to say why he went back home and make sure it was ready and then the photo on the upper threshold above which sleep at night.
My friend has normal trade with all night and then put them to bed and started getting a little snappy. My friend became angry and said: “My God, you never tire?” And he pushed to far. Let what he said to pain and stared at the ceiling and saw the photo. She was horrified.

of course, you know the centrifugal force trick, right?

Elimination of Air Pockets Using Centrifugal Force

Some of the sponge filled cartridges can develop air pockets at the bottom of the cartridge that can block the flow of ink. HP color cartridges and Epson Stylus Color cartridges are best known for this problem. A possible remedy is the use of centrifugal force.

Wrap the cartridge in a towel or cloth. Place the cloth wrapped cartridge in a plastic bag, (a plastic ‘grocery’ bag is good). Hold it in your hand with the head or exit ports pointing down. Extend your arm and swing the cartridge down towards the floor rapidly, as if you were going to throw it. Repeat several times, then remove the cloth wrapping. There should be a visible spot of ink from each of the chambers. If not, repeat this process..

Puerto Rica actor Jose Ferrer 1912 -1992 was, I think may have been the actor I was trying to remember played Toulouse-Lautrec in the 1952 film biopic ‘Moulin Rouge’ by John Houston. Don’t ask me where Peter Finch came from……

Moulin rouge poster1952 john Houston

It’s always frustrating when you can’t remember something for the life of you. This happens with quizes a lot. It just seems to depend if you are in sync with the world at that particular moment. Sometimes everything falls into place, and the brain seems to be so sharp and ‘coincidences’ just abound. Only they are not really coincidences, they are little clues showing you that you are in sync with the universe, I think.

I would very much like to do this indeed...Oh yes I would

Sometimes you can be reading and come to a word (in your head) and hear that word spoken at exactly the same time, but on the TV. Or vice versa, listening to something and your eye-catching hold of the same word, sentence. Very strange really. Sometimes though I am definitely out of sync. Just when I needed my printer urgently to print some programmes for tomorrow, the printer is playing up! I got ink, I got paper…but it won’t print properly, even though I’ve cleaned the head. Tomorrow is another day, hopefully a locupletative one!

November 25, 2009- Amidst the economic problems troubling the retail industry in the first quarter of 2009, some positive news emerged earlier this year as several retailers announced that they are opening stores, changing concepts and refusing to recess.

Among these retailers is Basha’s supermarket, which will be unveiling what they are calling a “state-of-the-art grocery experience” including fingerprint activated self-checkout systems. In addition, the store will provide a lounge with flat-screen TVs and free wireless Internet for parents and a free, supervised play center for their children. By providing these value-added services, Basha’s hopes to differentiate from competitors by providing a comfortable, hassle-free customer experience.

For printers-
Hassle-free means simpler, faster and more convenient. Printers with strong experience in data can provide both b/w and color digital economically in large quantities. Also, provide services like a customized shopping list based on previous purchasing habits and integrated direct mail using PURLs with conditional coupons. The provision of these services is strategically aligned with companies like Basha’s.
