Picture taken from http://lavidagumbo.files.wordpress.com

I am not sure about you, but when I go to a restaurant for a first time, I am both excited and anxious. It’s like a friendship or relationship that you want to work out. You want to love the vibe and atmosphere of the restaurant. You want to fall in love with the food and drinks. And, you hope you’ll love the place so much that you will continue to come back week after week.

For me, Tapas 177 was one of the places I think I could love, but I have to go back just to be sure. For one, I love the location. It is in the St. Paul Quarter of downtown Rochester on 177 St. Paul Street. I like that when you are driving there you feel as though you are actually in downtown Rochester. The restaurant provides valet, but there is parking on the street or in nearby parking lots.

When you walk into Tapas 177, the dimly-lit room set up is long and narrow. You walk in and on your right hand side is a bar that carries you all the way to the back of the restaurant. All of the dining tables are actually located on the floor beneath you.

Picture of the bar taken from http://www.tapas177.com

In no way, do you feel as though you are in an American restaurant. As soon as you walk into Tapas 177, you have picked up and moved to Spain. Wine racks, deep shades of red, leaves and stringed lights decorate the lounge.

Downstairs is equally unique. The owners have separated the downstairs into different themes. One side appears quieter and targeted towards more low-key dining. While the other side parallels another bar and is the entry way to the outside patio.

<img class="size-full wp-image-675" alt="Outdoors patio. Picture taken from http://www.democratandchronicle.com

Being mid-winter, my parents and I chose to dine inside however, I really would like to go back and experience Tapas 177 a little later in the night. The restaurant in open until 2am and is known for their Tapas Events and salsa dancing.

The service from our waiter and buser was exceptional. They both were very attentive and offered great recommendations.

<img class="size-full wp-image-692" alt="Table at Tapas 177. Picture taken from Blumie the Koala on Flickr.

For food, we tried three different tapas:

Steamed Mussels with Fries

Plump “P.E.I’s” sautéed with spicy chorizo sausage, asparagus tips & white wine herbed tomato broth – topped with home made citrus parmesan tossed pomme frites…

Chicken Paillard

Thin chicken breast grilled & topped with mixed greens, grilled eggplant, zucchini, red bell peppers, artichoke hearts, gorgonzola, basil oil & lemon parsley vinagrette…$10.95

Fresh Vegetable & Avocado Spring Rolls

Light & Fresh – filled with rice noodles, vegetables, avocado & herbs, served with warm coconut peanut dipping sauce…$8.95

Downstairs of Tapas 177. Picture taken from nywinetravel.com

The steamed mussels were delicious, however if you are not a fan of chorizo sausage, then I highly recommend staying away from this tapa. The flavor of the chorizo is fused into both the mussels and the white wine tomato broth.

My mom loved everything about the Chicken Paillard and is happy to know how to pronounce paillard (the d is silent). And, the spring rolls were delicious too. I love the taste of spring rolls with peanut dipping sauce.

Tapas 177 has an extensive wine and beer menu. But, they are really known for having the best martinis in Rochester.

Overall, Tapas 177 has a lot to offer people living and visiting Rochester. I’ve heard great remarks from young people and the older generation too. I think if you are looking for a place in Rochester that feels more like a European getaway, then Tapas 177 may be your spot.

Situated right above Wrecking Ball Coffee Roasters in the old firehouse is a soon-to-be event space for private parties, gatherings, and other happenings. Currently loving the bones of the structure, the brick walls, and the worn and chippy patina of the place, but I’m sure once it’s all done, it’ll be even more lovely.

We created a party favor table filled with new years eve props arranged creatively, which was a huge hit with the guests. The table consisted of party poppers, hats, glasses, mustaches, new years resolution cards, and an digital countdown to midnight.

The party was catered by an amazing catering company, called M Catering, that provided outstanding passed orderves, buffet style entrees, and a variety of desserts. The staff was exceptional at tending to every guests’ needs and worked wonderfully with the BTS team.
There was live music. A three piece jazz band that greeted guests with their soulful sounds, as they walked in the front door.Later in the night, there was a DJ who played hours of upbeat dance music, which really got the crowd going. There were two bartenders working hard to pour some amazing drinks. The night was filled with dancing, drinking, and tons of fun. Guests were escorted safely home by an amazing car service who will follow their clients home with their cars, so there was no inconvenience the next day.
