PES 6 will once again feature the graphical and gameplay tweaks that enable each new title to play completely differently from previous incarnations. The shooting system has been the subject of extensive retouching, now enabling players to pull off much more accurate snap shots as well as being able to exert a much larger feeling of control when going for quick half volleys or difficult full volleys.

The intelligence of players has seen a marked improvement. For example, players now make more realistic runs into space, often pointing where they would like the ball played. The physical aspect has also been beefed up, with strikers using their sheer presence to turn defenders and likewise, the defenders stepping a yard away to enable them to force players away from goal and not letting them spin into dangerous positions.

PES 6 also has a number of new teams licensed for inclusion, with the International roster now featuring the official kits for Argentina, the Netherlands, Italy, Spain and Sweden. New gameplay modes have been added and features like the much loved Master League mode also returns, together with a host of new tricks, feints and animations that can be used to bamboozle your opposition.

As well as the first step into next generation gaming with a dedicated Xbox 360 version bringing with it an impressive array of online features, PS2 and PC owners will also feel the benefit of a brand new online system, enabling up to eight players to play simultaneously through four linked systems.

PSP owners will also see marked improvements as the Master League option has now been added by popular demand and for the first time, DS owners will get to play PES wherever they are. However, the handheld versions will also feature a revised camera angle, to make it easier to view the action on the smaller screens, without losing any of the gameplay

More evolution than revolution, for PS2’s best footie game

Note: Before I get into this review I just thought I’d say that I’m well aware this title is almost 18 months old. And I’m equally aware that PES 2008 has been out for months. Simply put, I’m publishing this review because I still believe it to be the tightest, most responsive and finest friendship-ruining football game there is. Save yourself from the slightly wonky pace and strange sensation of playing on an ice rink in the latest incarnation of the series and pick this up in your local bargain bin instead.

With a deafening thud we connect with a crunching sliding tackle with Cesc Fabregas. Winning the ball we look up, the diminutive playmaker is surrounded by opposition players. With no other options, we have no choice but to slide a hopeful through ball 40 yards to Thierry Henry. The lightning-quick striker wins the ball, and, with none of our A.I. teammates making useful runs, we proceed to skin three defenders before crashing the ball into the top right corner, past a helpless goalie. This is classic PES. One moment it constantly frustrates with the limits of its A.I. and the next it thrills with its breathtaking imagination of the beautiful game. Crushing frustration and breathtaking thrills? Just like real footie, then.

Children of the evolution
The latest in the long line of critically acclaimed football games, PES 6 is perhaps the least evolved in the series. Where previous games have constantly pushed the envelope forward, in terms of animation and control, the latest entry merely refines what was already a brilliant engine. Perhaps it’s just a sign of how accomplished PES 5 was that there hasn’t been a major overall for this year’s version. At first glance the action seems very similar, and it’s only until we had a few matches under our belt that the more methodical pace of the new game began to shine through. Matches are noticeably slower now, with a greater emphasis on build-up play from the midfield. This makes for more tactical games and you’ll have to be adept at spreading the possession right throughout your team to break down the game’s A.I.

Controls have remained the same. X handles short passes, Circle long balls, Square for shots, which are considerably harder now, – more on that later – with Triangle used for through balls. Finally, the shoulders buttons control dribbling speed and tricks. In practice it’s a near flawless control system. And one that is in perfect sync with the design of the Dualshock.

It’s a good thing the controls are so responsive too, because you’ll be jostling for possession a lot more than in previous games. PES is now more physical than ever before, with the whistle happy refs of last year’s title a thing of the past. Powerhouse forwards, like Adriano or Mark Viduka, will brush smaller defenders by in their wake. Slighter players like Theo Walcott will crash to the ground with the smallest nudge. While aggressive midfield generals, like AC Milan’s Gennaro Gattuso, will throw themselves into tackles like excitable games’ journos at Hideo Kojima’s feet. It makes for a more flowing, competitive game of football. And much of the stop start nature of last year’s game has been eradicated.

Shoot from the hip
Combine this more aggressive style of play with the game’s revised shot mechanics, and suddenly you’ve got a whole new ball game from PES 5. You now have to align your body in the proper position to get an accurate shot. If your player isn’t facing the goal it’s likely he’ll sky his effort like a Johnny Wilkinson conversion. Not only does this make scoring goals harder, but it forces you to think tactically about the positioning of your forwards. Where you pick up the ball is now crucial, and you’ll need enough time and space to turn yourself towards goal to have any chance of scoring. It’s more realistic too, so don’t expect to score many 25 yard screamers with Emile Heskey. The best thing about scoring in PES, though, is that two goals will never be the same. And the constant pursuit of that perfect strike, volley or chip, means the business of banging the ball in the onion bag never fails to thrill.

While shooting has been made more difficult, dribbling is now more accurate than in previous games. Fleet-footed players like Cristiano Ronaldo can run through opposition defenses with greater ease. And, combined with smoother dribbling animations, it’s now easier to score goals reminiscent of that classic FA Cup Ryan Giggs effort. The result of PES 6’s more methodical, physical build-up play, coupled with harder shot mechanics but easier dribbling skills, creates a genuinely balanced football experience. Where 90 minutes of hard tackling and physical pressing can give success, but also where a moment of individual brilliance can win a match. Still, it doesn’t always feel like you’re in complete control.

This feeling is especially prevelant in the singer player Master League, which has remained largely the same for this year’s version of the game. You still have the option of taking on 11 no-name players and developing them into world beaters or, alternatively, you can pick a team with all the proper stars and go for that elusive league, Europe, cup treble. The Master League is still a compelling single player experience, but we can’t help but feels it’s in dire need of more than a new lick of paint. The business of making transfers feels impersonal – there’s not enough feedback on wage demands or telling you why some signings fail. And, generally, the whole mode needs some restructuring and new ideas. After match press conferences or feedback from your club’s board would all be welcome additions that could spice up next year’s PES.

The I in team
The biggest problem with single player, though, remains you’re computer teammates. Even after six years the A.I. still has the positional awareness of your average pub team player. More often than not you’ll have to do all the hard work yourself, because your teammates simply refuse to make intelligent forward runs. And PES still loves to tell stories, whether it’s your star striker netting a hat-trick in a fierce derby game, your centre back giving away a nothing penalty or conceding a sickner in the final minute against the bottom team in the league. You can almost see Seabass –the creator of the series – furiously tinkering away with the code in the background, making sure the game goes by a predetermined script. Of course, it doesn’t happen in every match, and generally, if you play well enough, you’ll get the result you deserve. But when your shot bobbles an inch wide of the post and then a no-name striker goes up the other end and scores a bicycle kick, it’s hard not to feel like PES is making the rules up as it goes along.

Play with some mates, though, and this all goes away. In multiplayer you can write your own script and two games will never be quite alike. Great with two players, better with four. PES is undoubtedly the greatest PS2 experience you can share with your mates. It’s the only game we play in the office every single day, regardless of deadlines, illness or ruined friendships. Every game is a ridiculously exciting pantomime of dirty fouls, moments of brilliance and occasionally baffling goals. It makes us shout, it makes us swear, it makes us promise we’ll never play it again. But we always come back, because PES is nothing short of endlessly compelling.

With FIFA improving every year and PES making only minor adjustments, it’s possible that gamers could have a real fight on their hands when deciding what footie title to buy next season. And there’s no denying that in terms of presentation, FIFA is in a league of its own. But while the barely competent Brooking/Brackley commentary and lackluster licensing – there are still only two official licensed Premiership clubs – frustrate. And PES still refuses to shed the idiosyncrasies that have dogged it for years – like the impenetrable force field that shields keepers from losing the ball in the air. Konami’s franchise still pips EA’s juggernaut to the title.

Why? It’s because PES remains a game of unbridled character and passion. Though punctuated by frustration and imperfection, it remains the only game that will make you scream in delight or throw a DualShock-breaking tantrum a year after you’ve bought it. FIFA feels sterile and handheld in comparison, like its doing all the work for you. While Konami’s game is unpredictable and frustrating, it remains an endlessly exciting spectacle. This is football, after all. And we wouldn’t have it any other way.

Overall

The best sports title on PS2, but PES might need some new tricks to retain its title next season.

Esa libertad de la que nos habla con jactancia un señor en EE.UU , y de la que nosotros también deberíamos estar orgullosísimos pues cada día, y gracias a nuestros padres norteamericanos, estamos mas cerca de conquistarla completamente !!!. Esa libertad de la que nos están hablando no existe, es un concepto errado de la realidad que concibieron sin darle mayor relevancia a Mi entorno humano y natural. Mi libertad – concepto que no se basa en la singularidad, mas bien en la pluralidad - no estipula que una familia tenga menor importancia que un animal que no posee un teleencéfalo altamente desarrollado y pulgar oponible.

La verdad queridos contertulios es que podría ponerme a chamuyar sobre mis conocimientos de la historia del stencil (no los tengo), pero les estaría dando información errada, por lo tanto a continuación les dejo un articulo pequeño, que resume la historia del stencil.

Stencilistas, Los Bisnietos de Heartfield

O todo lo que el nuevo arte callejero le debe a un célebre viejito alemán.La historia del graffiti tiene un origen proleta y abstracto a la vez y su evolución tendría –a mi entender- cuatro etapas bien diferenciadas:
1. Abstracta: De la simple firma “a la mala” a logos complejos
2. Intermedia: Se suman dibujos, con referencias al comic. Consolidación de un lenguaje autónomo e ingreso en el mercado del arte (Haring o Scharf, por ejemplo). Prima la síntesis visual.
3. Barroca: Composiciones abigarradas. Ampliación global del merchandising asociado al género.
4. Stencilismo: Abandono del virtuosismo visual, para cultivar un lenguaje más frío y directo. Variación cool frente al hot de las paredes profusamente coloreadas. (Aunque la historia de esta práctica corra paralela al graffiti, su emergencia la sitúa como nuevo eslabón del arte callejero)

El Stencil como pintura urbana, sería una extensión conceptual del graffiti, la plantilla daría a las formas un acabado perfecto y mecánico. La imagen perdería la carga emotiva y virtuosa que brindaba la pintura spray “a mano alzada”. Lo anterior guarda relación con algunos momentos concretos en la historia del arte moderno; apuntemos los nombres de Duchamp frente a las vanguardias pictóricas y luego los de Warhol o Lichtenstein respecto a la generación anterior, la de los expresionistas abstractos, cuyas ambiciosas obras presagiaron -por temperamento- a muchas que hoy realizan los grafiteros.

La relación entre grafiteros y stencilistas se podría analizar social y artísticamente. El grafiti es un arte callejero evolucionado: no importa si ha sido “contaminado” por su recepción en las galerías de arte, su origen es proletario. El stencil es producción burguesa, de escuela de arte o diseño, que ha salido a tomar la ciudad. Los stencilistas no son hijos de la calle, pero la adoptaron como soporte, desplazamiento que le llaman. Pequeña revolución sin muertos ni heridos, a cargo de chicos con ingenio crítico, tal como lo hicieran los tatas del Dadaísmo, que en paz descansen.

Lejanos tiempos del Dadá. Alemania tras la Primera Guerra Mundial. Los dadaístas están dispuestos a luchar contra una sociedad que consideran belicista e hipócrita. Quieren escandalizar, con obras antiartísticas y manifestaciones agresivas y delirantes. A través de un arte absurdo mostrar el sinsentido social. Pero pronto su juego se convierte en una diversión elitista. Terminan por no asustar a nadie, agradando a otros artistas, como ellos. El circuito cerrado de la cultura es un lugar demasiado seguro para hacer guerrilla social ¿Entraría la alta burguesía o los militares al Cabaret Voltaire? Pero entre estos artistas destacaron dos cuya producción contiene un veneno y agresividad que pueden quedar en el papel y generar más daño que cualquier proclama teatralizada: George Grosz y John Heartfield.

A Heartfield (Helmut Herzfeld, 1891-1968) se lo considera el inventor del fotomontaje, una técnica cuya lógica es la misma que impera en el stencil: fundir o alterar imágenes para producir otras con un sentido opuesto o irónico respecto a las originales. La subversión visual del fotomontaje tenía directa relación con la intención política de los autores. Heartfield, en particular, dedicó decenas de sus trabajos a ironizar ácidamente el estado militar que se incubaba en Alemania tras su derrota en la Gran Guerra. Una y otra vez alteró fotografías de Hitler para mostrar su vinculación con la burguesía alemana y el peligro que escondían sus expresiones y lenguaje militar y nacionalista. Hitler con los pulmones llenándose de monedas o Hitler, otra vez, haciendo el saludo nazi para recibir los billetes que le entrega un gigante de aspecto burgués.

Igual humor encontramos entre los stencilistas, no siempre con intenciones políticas, pero si en su lógica que es la de la parodia y la cita. Su técnica sigue siendo un derivado del fotomontaje solo que en alto contraste y con la mediación del Photoshop. Si revisamos algunas imágenes locales de esta especialidad, como las realizadas por Acuario (Sebastián Arancibia, diseñador de la Portales) encontraremos la misma gramática. En su notable Eat This los arcos de McDonalds se convierten en las estelas de humo de dos caza bombarderos que se disponen al ataque. Al igual que en los ejemplos de Heartfield la formula consiste en fundir dos imágenes y sumarles –a veces- un texto. La formulación es simple, pero de la elección y la fusión de las imágenes depende el chiste. Esa es finalmente la gran lección del fotomontaje, como llevar la lógica del chiste, sus mecanismos de desarticulación de la imagen, para enseñar el lado inquietante o ridículo de la realidad.

Heartfield, el bisabuelo, lo sabía. Sus bisnietos, con plantillas sacadas de fotografía y latas de spray, se encargan de llevar a las calles las lecciones de su tata desconocido. Un tata bueno que no les cobra derecho de autor y que seguro los cuida desde su cielo particular, uno en blanco y negro y con retoques.

Instalação:
