Posted by SuckaFish

The Cowboys are off this week. It’s your chance to use the RedZone Channel and the Sunday Ticket to the fullest of your abilities despite the fact that DirecTV is going to use this time to screw you unmercifully.

Here’s everything you need to read before next week’s Cowboys kickoff.

If DeMarcus Ware isn’t your favorite player, he will be after you watch this (E:60)

Looks like Wade Phillips will be unemployed soon (Four-letter network)

The controversial video has been moved, temporarily (PFT)

More feel-good, off-the-field stuff (FanHouse)

FOX apologized for reporting the fact that Yoko Romo is fat (FanHouse)

Is Wade the worst coach in the NFC East? (Bleacher Report)

Finally, even Redskin Hall of Famers hate the Redskins

UConn Players Make UFL’s New York Roster

Former UConn football players Dan Davis and Alfred Fincher were listed on the roster of the UFL’s New York Sentinels. The Sentinels are scheduled to play the Florida Tuskers at Rentschler Field on November 12. Keanu Reeves is not listed as a QB for the Sentinels.

David Givens Sues Titans

David Givens, the former New England Patriot and Tennessee Titan, has sued the Titans in connection with a career-ending knee injury. The gist of Givens’ Complaint is that Titans team doctors discovered a potentially serious knee injury in his pre-contract physical, but never advised him of the condition. Givens subsequently suffered a serious knee injury. What is somewhat unclear is why the Titans would sign a player with a preexisting injury to a large contract in the first place. Mike Florio over at Pro Football Talk has a good write up on the case. Robert Boland at the National Football Post also does a nice job with this story.

This case appears to have some similarities to the suit that Tebucky Jones filed against Patriots’ team doctors.

Judge Redfield T. Baum has rejected both the NHL and Jim Balsillie’s bids to purchase the Coyotes. The decision is regarded as a victory for the NHL, as Judge Baum ruled that NHL’s relocation rules must be adhered to. Look for more analysis from Dan Canavan next week.

The Boss at Giants Stadium

Despite the lack of a sports law connection, Bruce Springsteen is playing his final shows at Giants Stadium. Check out the video of “American Land” in Dublin to get you ready for the weekend, and if you’re lucky, the Boss in concert.

Cowboys Stadium Is Christened
Terence Newman wasn’t the only one who scored during the fourth quarter of the game Monday night. Apparently a couple of love birds took the opportunity to express their emotions in a physical way at Cowboys Stadium. Yeah, it looks like they went to an oversized john designed for a person with a disability and had sex. On the floor. Of a public bathroom in a stadium that holds more than 100,000 people. Of course a crowd gathered outside and a cell phone camera caught them in the act.

Felix Jones Out and Fined
Sources say he is going to miss the Denver game, at least.

The league has fined him for a leg whip against the Panthers. That makes perfect sense given that HE NEVER ACTUALLY TOUCHED ANYONE.

Another Job Lost
Looks like the great cornerback experiment is over. The Cowboys will stop alternating starts between Mike Jenkins and Orlando Scandrick.

Jason Garrett Is Innovative
Here’s a novel idea for the league’s top rushing offense. When you’re at the one, run!

Flozell Fined Again
He kept his streak alive. Three games, three fines. Learn all about it in another completely fact-based and unbiased report from Pro Football Talk.

Lisa: Dad, do you know what schadenfreude is?
Homer: No, I do not know what schadenfreude is, please tell me because I am dying to know …
Lisa: It’s a German term for “shameful joy”, taking pleasure in the suffering of others.

That pretty much sums up my feelings today. Here are some of my favorite quotes/links after the team Mike Florio predicted to be in the Super Bowl became the first team to lose to the Lions since 2007.

Two fun posts in the Sports Bog:
One asks if this was the worst DC sports moment of 2009.
The other wonders if it’s time for a change. It includes these quotes:

Michael Strahan on Fox’s halftime show: “They’ve quit. The Washington Redskins have quit on the field.”
Trevor Matich, on CSN’s Postgame Live: “Beneath Rock Bottom. The only way it could have been worse if they would have been beaten by Maryland.”
Jon Jansen, on CSN: He said the win “couldn’t have come against a better team.” Also, if he had smiled any harder, all his teeth would have spontaneously popped out of his gums.

Steinz also points out: “Campbell was the only Skins player who agreed to be on CSN’s postgame show. Well, Campbell on Jon Jansen. That’s just absurd.”

And from Twitter:

John Riggins (@Riggo44)
There are team specific issues for sure and some individual issues for sure but the owner ultimately is a loser and you can’t fix that

u r Zorn..Head Coach..in Detroit…alot on the line….and u r chatting up TomKat before the game…what does that tell us about YOU!!!

Roger Mason Jr. (@MoneyMase)
This is an all time low point in Redskins history.

I’m so embarassed to a Redskins fan right now! What are we doing?

From Mister Irrelevant’s Twitter/Live Blog of the game:
Jamie Mottram (@jamiemottram) Coming to grips with the season being over in Week 3.

Unsilent Majority (@Unsilent)
If the Supreme Court rules against the Skins they can change their name to EPICFAIL

Next Sunday the Buccaneers travel to FedEx Field and try to keep their one-game lead over the Redskins in the battle for next year’s number one pick.

Cowboys wide receiver Roy Williams (we don’t have to call him Roy E. Williams anymore) is definitely out for the rest of the preseason after injuring his shoulder in a goal-line collision with Orlando Scandrick. Everyone agrees on those points. After that it gets sketchy. The four-letter.com is saying that tests were negative and that’s that. Florio on the other hand had a slightly less positive spin. He claims a shockingly unnamed source tells him that Williams collarbone is broken and he’ll be out six to eight weeks. Then he starts covering his ass. Enjoy his post. Williams will undergo an MRI and we’ll know the truth soon enough.

Redskins fans hate the Cowboys. They hate their fans. They even hate the colors.

I’m a Cowboys fan and for most of my life I’ve lived in the DC area. This blog is part of the SWAGLESS network and in it I’ll give you news and opinions about both teams, the league in general, and the secret cabal of Dallas fans in the nation’s capital.

Oh, and if the league says you can’t hang a screen less than 85 feet above the field and you hang it 90 above the field, then you’re in the right.

If the league says they’ve created new rules for when punts hit the scoreboard and they’re the exact same rules they had a week ago, then Goodell is just covering his ass.

If Mike Florio says the league is buzzing over preferential treatment for the Cowboys but doesn’t name any of his sources, it’s because he hates the Cowboys and is once again putting his personal slant on an otherwise informative blog.

UPDATE: Add Atlanta Falcons wide reciever, Harry Douglas to the list. He is out for the season with a torn ACL.

Less than a week into NFL training camp, and there are several key players who are likely out for significant periods of time.

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/category/injuries/

-Stewart Bradley, LB, Philadelphia Eagles (ACL, out for season)

-Ma’ake Kemoeatu, DT, Carolina Panthers (Achilles, likely out for season)

-Reggie Kelly, TE, Cincinnati Bengals (Achilles, out for season)

-Chris Myers, C, Houston Texans (Knee, indefinitely)

-Nick Griesen, LB, Denver Broncos (Knee, out for season)

-Jacque Reeves, CB, Houston Texans (Leg, out 6-8 weeks)

For me, as a Panther fan, I am most disturbed by the injury to “Kemo.” His presence in the middle of the Panthers’ defensive line is critical for the success of the whole defense. Pro Bowl linebacker, Jon Beason, needs to have the ability to run freely, and “Kemo’s” big body keeps those offensive lineman occupied to allow just that.

Defensive tackle is one of the Panthers’ weakest areas, in respect to depth. Now, somebody must step up to fill the void.

ProFootballTalk.com (now joined with NBC) is reporting that the Denver Broncos have entered contract

ProFootballTalk.com (now joined with NBC) is reporting that the Denver Broncos have entered contract talks with rookie Running Back Knowshon Moreno, their #12 overall pick, news that has not been picked up by any other major news sites.

Usually the Broncos wait until the eve of training camp or a bit before then to sign their first round picks, like many other teams. Last year first round pick Ryan Clady wasn’t signed until the morning of training camp. But now for the first time with two first round picks, the new regime is making some changes and will be getting a head start if in fact PFT is correct.

I usually trust PFT, unless it has to do with Terry Bradshaw so I will go about things as if the Broncos are in fact talking to Moreno and his agent.

As of this point we have only signed Center Blake Schluter, but I do not expect him to be the only signed Bronco for long as we still have 9 more picks left. That is unless Josh McDaniels is looking for another way to peeve some very temperamental Broncos fans.

As for first round picks in general, only Mark Sanchez and Matt Stafford are under contract. The way it is looking though, Moreno might be the next.

Denver Broncos owner Pat Bowlen said he still doesn’t understand why his team got to a place where it had to trade Pro Bowl quarterback Jay Cutler to the Chicago Bears. In an interview with the Denver Post, Bowlen was sure about one thing: Cutler should have returned Bowlen’s calls.

Bowlen eventually ordered that Cutler be traded after the quarterback spurned his request to talk about differences he had with McDaniels, who had discussions with other teams about possibly trading Cutler.

“Honestly, I still don’t know what happened with Jay. I don’t want to throw him under the bus, but I made two phone calls (and there is proof, Broncos executives claim) and left voice mails with my cell number and asked him to call me, and he didn’t,” Bowlen said. “I don’t do e-mails. If Jay had called and said he thought the coach was (not a nice person) and he wanted out of here, I would have said, ‘Let’s work this out.’ But I heard nothing directly from him.

”Pick up the phone! That’s where we got off the rails. We had no other choice but to trade him. If (the trade talk) was the reason Jay left, he should have left.”

Pro Football Talk takes both sides of the situation, pointing out that Cutler had reason not to trust the Broncos or take Bowlen for his word after not following through on promise to keep offensive staff intact as well as stating the obvious point that you always have to answer the phone when your boss calls.

I want to go in another direction. How is it possible that Pat Bowlen ”don’t do e-mails” in 2009? I am a no-count mid-career castoff from my chosen profession and I have three e-mail accounts.

According to Daniel Kaplan of SportsBusiness Journal the NFLPA decreased its salaries by more than $3 million in 2008 with a total of $14 million in compensation down from $17.4 million in 2007.

As noted by Kaplan, the union most likely shifted some salaries over to the ‘for-profit’ Players Inc. which is not required to share its financials to the extent a non-profit (NFLPA) is required.

In 2008, compensation totals reflected 22 percent of total revenues down from 29 percent in 2007.

In a move that helps to reduce some of the dead money resulting from the release of cornerback Dre’Bly, the Denver Broncos have created $3.6 million in cap space by converting a $4.5 million roster bonus owed to linebacker D.J. Williams into a guaranteed payment to subtract the amount of money off of the cap.

According to Mike Klis of the Denver Post, the move spreads the payment over five years for cap purposes. The cap charge for 2009 is reduced, then, to $900,000 —giving rise to an extra $3.6 million in cap room for the league year that commences on February 27.

The $3.6 million in cap savings resulting from the restructuring of Williams’ deal offsets only a portion of the the cap charge relating to Dre Bly’s release.

Per a source with knowledge of Bly’s deal, his remaining bonus proration is $9.45 million. Because 2009 is the last capped year, the entire amount will have to be absorbed under the 2009 cap.

But since the Broncos are clearing Bly’s $3.25 million salary and $400,000 workout bonus, the net cap hit is $5.8 million. So with Williams’adjusted contract, the Broncos are only $2.2 million in the hole.

Klis also reports that the Broncos hope to extend the contracts of receiver Brandon Marshall and Casey Wiegmann, both of whom are in the final years of their contracts. Absent a CBA extension, Marshall would be only a restricted free agent in 2010.

Compromise candidate coming to NFLPA list The golden mouthpiece of the NFLPA these days is SportsBus

Compromise candidate coming to NFLPA list

The golden mouthpiece of the NFLPA these days is SportsBusiness Journal and when they speculate on the union’s next move in the search for an executive director you can be assured their speculation comes with validity from union leaders. Remember, when you look at the financials of the NFLPA it becomes clear that SBJ is a hired hand of the union, to the tune of over $400k/year.

So with all that said, Mike Florio over at ProFootballTalk.com discusses a scenario that was first reported by Sports Business Journal’s Liz Mullen and Daniel Kaplan that a compromise candidate could emerge in the union’s on-going process of finding an executive director. You can read his article here or get the tidbits below.

The union’s constitution allows for three or more player reps to agree on a candidate and that candidate can be added to the mix. This fact, the SBJ article and the underhanded approach this search has taken brings a serious question to mind. Is the NFLPA making a third attempt (in a month) to influence the elections for a new executive director by organizing at least three player reps for a last minute addition to list of candidates? We wouldn’t put it past them and that’s why we’re gonna tap our sources in DC and see if this question can be answered.

Drive-by comment sends Moran to the bunker

In SBJ’s article, Congressman Jim Moran, father of NFLPA Human Resources Director Mary Moran, said that he and his daughter had done nothing wrong ( in regards to erroneously linking Troy Vincent to the Congressional letter) and that his daughter actually went into hiding after she was the subject of menacing comments, including the mention of ‘a drive-by’ shooting, posted by anonymous commenters on the Web site ProFootballTalk.com. The Web site took the comments down at the request of a union official, according to site co-founder Mike Florio, who would not name the union official.”

We don’t condone violence nor the threat thereof, however, retreating to your bunker because some idiot posts a comment on the internet relating you to a drive by is a case of over reaction to say the least. Being a trained PR professional tells me this is just a ‘villain to victim’ play in which you turn the tables of public opinion by transforming your client from the villain to the victim. It’s common practice in Washington and our elected officials are the best at playing this PR move.
