Well, I sit in the studio feeling very proud. The studio has seen a busy weekend of activity which sums up the role and purpose of the studio.

To kick things off I was running the first of 3 home recording workshops here at the studios. I spent 3 hours with a chap learning his way through the basics of pro-tools, working out how to program drums and bass sounds for a personalised backing track he was making. This was a great way to spend time as he could then go home and start a personal quest of music making according to his own vision, with very little limitation.

The highlight of the evening for me was the on the gig venue side of things. There was a whole team of guys connected to the Aylesbury Vale Youth for Christ cafes who spent the morning and much of the afternoon making an extension to our existing stage. I’ve got to tell you it looks fantastic! Really sturdy, and brilliantly done. It makes a BIG difference to the practicality of the platform, and really opens up what we can do with the space.

To continue the theme of team work, the gig in the evening was a great success! To start with it was well attended, and the the band – THIS IS FREEDOM – were great! A certain young Becky Acres – a member of one of the AVYFC youth cafes – masterminded the evening, and in conjunction with members from the AVYFC team put together a great night of music.

This is turning out to be a fairly productive year for new Holiday Music arrangements. It would appear that working in the Guitar/Bass/Drums format has been helpful in terms of coming up with ideas.

This is “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” , written by Hugh Martin & Ralph Blane. It is from the 1944 movie Meet Me in St.Louis, in which the song is performed by Judy Garland.

Music Production Software is the first thing a new producer is looking for, it allows the producer to create music. The question i hear the most is what Music Production Software is the best? Fruity Loops (FL Studio), Reason, Logic Pro or Protools.

Reason

Reason is properly my favourite because every single sample included in the software is perfect. Reason is normally used by producers that already have an idea of how to make music and advanced producers. The sound quality you can get out of reason is top notch and ready for radio play, it is recommended however you have to stay within reason. You cannot add VST’s and Plugins, however you can add samples to NNXT and Redrum. Below is a website where you can find tutorials on how to use Reason.

Pro Tools

Pro Tools is like Logic Pro. Industry standard. Pro Tools is normally used by producers that use instruments and hardware that require live recording to get sounds into the song. Pro Tools allows you to also like Logic do everything within one program, supports almost everything you throw at it. It is the worlds best but it also comes at a price and if you can afford it check it out, however don’t buy it for the name and expect to make hits. Era così toccante sentirlo parlare in maniera così disperata sullo stato del suo mondo, oltre a tutta quella brillante musicalità. Una delle mie cose preferite che faceva era seguire gli archi con la sua voce, o ripetere le cose che stavano facendo gli strumenti. C’è un tale, semplice e subdolo godimento in questo, da aggiungere tutto un altro livello alla musica.
Oggi abbiamo Pro Tools e migliaia di tracce, e possiamo fare vocalizzi differenti su ogni traccia. Ma a quei tempi bisognava davvero innovare, per esempio nel modo in cui Marvin rispondeva a se stesso nelle canzone, o tutto quel lavoro di supporto da molto distante, in cui la sua voce è tutta nel retro e fa l’eco. È qualcosa di indimenticabile: interpretava ogni singola canzone con tale chiarezza che mi dava i brividi.
La versione live di “Distant Lover” deve essere una delle esibizioni più incredibili mai catturate su nastro. Si sente la sua sicurezza, il suo desiderio – si riescono a immaginare i suoi movimenti. Tutto il pubblico è appeso a ogni sua parola; e lui li provoca per tutto il tempo. Questo è ciò che rende Marvin Gaye immortale: l’emozione che evoca. Okay, so lately everyone has been just highly annoying with the whole New Moon garbage that is apparently playing on this rainy day.

I mean seriously, this is a very tenny-bopper movie, females ages 15-40 are hopped up on this crap, why? This is more annoying than a baby whining loudly in your ear at a restaurant. Kids, if you want something worthwhile with vampires, go watch True Blood, at least there’s good stuff there, Twilight is like the Harry Potter of the vampire world obviously and Harry fails too.

Save your money twinkletoes and go watch something worthwhile .

Is it me or is the Pro Tools session a bit too slow loading. Its as if it was designed to make engineers more money. I mean for 50 per hour, half the time is loading and saving times, clients begin to wonder if its the system or the engineer. In my experience, it doesnt matter what system, its the software.  Why does it take ten minutes to load the plugins? Why do you have to play the song to render it mixed?

There are many other brands of software that can fulfill everything Pro Tools does and some. Ive used and or owned, but definitely know how to use all different audio sequencers and Daws. As of late my favorite program has been Cakewalk Sonar. It accomidates all needs, and a few features I would have never thought of.

Ill let u form your own opinion but I wanted to express mine. Chime in and let me know what yo think.

Welcome to the first blog, I hope that you’ll enjoy whatever I have to say, whether it be about personal news, engineering news or rants and whatnot. I will be updating this as I go along with my career and everything else.

Good news in the fact that I will be recording a band full of really cool guys who have a sound similar to Alice in Chains which is one of my all time favorite bands ^_^.

Fan to Flame is their name, check them out and tell them Josh sent you if they ask .

It seems I will have Arlyn studios to myself for a weekend since everyone else will be gone for thanksgiving and we can hopefully record this album in a day! I know these guys can do it as do they. We all share the same views for how this album should sound and what needs to happen in order for that to flourish which is a great thing in the studio world, everyone must have a goal and must be willing to work together to achieve a great product and have a great time creating the product.

Nov 28th and 29th are the scheduled days for our sessions, the plan goes as follows:

Track all drums, guitars and bass

29th:

Track vocals and do overdubs if necessary

After that is all said and done, I will begin mixing everything and will hope for a great outcome. I will keep you all posted.

It’s officially over. I am not a millionaire and even if I was I am not the type to buy a bunch of stuff just because I have the money…well there is one exception but that’s another blog for another time. Anyway, I’ve had Pro Tools for a year. I was all ready to buy Propellerheads’ Record but I realized that a lot of the things that I was trying to do on Record I could do on Pro Tools. I just hadn’t yet because many of the simple things that I could do in Reason were a pain in the ass on Pro Tools.

In theory it’s like this: Reason + Record > Pro Tools

In Reason you can make beats only. You cannot record audio. However, Reason is extremely intuitive and easy to work with. The GUI (Guided User Interface) is very friendly. But you can’t or should I say couldn’t record audio until Record came out. If you already own Reason, when you open Record, you will already have Reason inside. Pro Tools records audio but the GUI is a little intimidating and the MIDI editor and grid are tough to use.

The only reason I haven’t grabbed Record yet is that I haven’t had the money…C.R.E.A.M.

That reminds me of a story I have never told. This is how you know Jason and I are meant to be doing this in our love for hip hop:

We had an American History class junior year in high school. We had a to write a paper on the American Dream. Mine was on Wu Tang’s C.R.E.A.M. The American dream, in my opinion was that Cash Ruled Everything Around Me. Well Jason and I quickly became friend after that and for our semester history project we made a hip hop documentary. I’m gonna have to get that converted to digital and post it.

This is an all-new arrangement. I’ve never actually done Jingle Bells before, although it might well be the most arranged of all holiday songs. It’s one of the simpler seasonal tunes, and it’s pretty easy to overwhelm it with harmony substitutions. It seems to me that I’ve seen and heard more arrangements that I considered to be poor than to be good.

Given that it has been arranged so many ways, it wasn’t until the idea for this approach developed that I thought I might have something at least a little bit original — and that also preserves the traditional happy-go-lucky  mood that I think most people associate with the song. Perhaps you can tell me how well the arrangement works.

The arrangement is — as usual nowadays — for guitar, bass and drums. On this recording the guitar is the 1949 L-4C about which I recently posted on the blog.

What to say, what to say.  It’s 2:08AM.  Been going to bed around 3 as of late and it MUST STOP.  I’m getting way too tired in the day and my bed here just isn’t comfortable enough so as to allow me to rest up properly.  Every day pretty recently I’ve been having blood-shot eyes by around 8:30, 9PM.  I swore the other day that I’d be going to bed so much earlier, but awesome-ass things just keep emerging and I’m engaged until the super early morning hours.  Tonight’s distraction away from sleep was Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2.  Yeah, I’m pretty sure blogs, forums, Facebook statuses, and Twitters are all a-buzz with MW2 updates.  But shit.  It really is a cultural phenomenon within the gaming world.  Jon told me that 5 million people bought it at its LAUNCH at MIDNIGHT.  5 million people in the U.S. lined up for it.  Ain’t that crazy?  Let’s do the math on that.

$59.99 x 5,000,000 = $299,950,000.  Yeah.  This game is equally making over $300 mil.  Isn’t that crazy to think about?  Just on the FIRST MORNING it amassed $300 mil.  To date, Men In Black, the movie, has made less than $600 million.  Movies are universal enjoyment… video games are definitely a niche.  To me that’s pretty stellar.  Like, just imagine that kinda success.  I know my name isn’t attributed to anything jaw-dropping.  I mean, I’ve had some poetry published… and I’ve had my music on the radio twice… but whatever.  Nothing worth writing home about… yet.

Definitely this past week I’ve been seeing myself in a different light musically.  It pretty much all started Monday with my performance of One More Time at Kafein.  My stage antics still suck and I can’t talk to an audience worth a damn… but I still killed that song and Joe was definitely singing it long after I was done playing.  His words at the Harrison stop were, “Dammit!  That song is so catchy!”  You’re damn right its.  And then yesterday at band practice with Brett and Shawn, I had Brett saying multiple times, “I swear dude, I feel like I could cry- you’re amazing!”.  And jamming last night with Joe at 1 in the morning?  Yeah.  I came up with some super sick stuff on drums.  Oh!  And back up a bit, I believe I had Paul grinning from ear to ear when he heard the drums I wanted to add to his new songs for the Stellanecks.  Just… fuck yeah.  I’m in a very good place musically, and now that I’m taking the time as of late to really practice my instruments, I’m starting to feel very, very accomplished.

Speaking of Paul, I met with him last night to discuss what’s going to be happening with his band the Stellanecks and the recording of their album, “Sweep the Sky.”  It was a really good brainstorming session and the one thing I loved most was his comment about me.  I forgot why he said this to Dom (the other member), but Paul’s words were, “Dude, I know Mort.  He’s gonna give us all he’s got and work harder for us than anyone else possible, just busting his balls to get us the best album we can.”  It was really endearing to know that that’s how he views me.  Lately I’ve been feeling kinda lame in terms of my success, but I really feel like it’s just been due to a lack of inspiration.  Nothing has been inspiring me as of late.  All my fuel used to come from Harriet’s love.  It just got me going like crazy.  And without it I need to find some sort of new muse.  The last album I heard that got me amped was This Will Be the Death of Us by Set Your Goals.  While Raditude, Armistice, and even Lost In Suburbia have been super sick albums that I’m a huge fan of… they haven’t inspired me.  And shit.  It’s been forever since I’ve seen a movie or an anime that really got my creative juices pumping.  I’ve exhausted a lot of good art this past year… it’s safe to say I’m in a dryspell and just need to let this drought happen.

So what exactly AM I doing creatively these days? I’m playing in Brett Cooper’s band on bass, I’m reading/playing through a Motown Bass Charts book, I’m playing for the Window Theatre, I’ll be recording the Stellanecks, I’m reading The Gunseller by Hugh Laurie, I’m trying to write blogs about zen teachings, and I’ll be devoting a lot of time very soon to experimenting with Pro Tools 7 LE.  Word up.

Right now I’m listening to the music from Samurai Champloo.  Such good music… such a great anime.  I miss those days where I had so much new/good anime to consume.  I’m at that point in my life where it’s very difficult to find a new anime because it seems I’ve watched all the good ones.  I think the last show I watched that was great was like… Magikano.  And that was last semester.  Sad day!  I haven’t even watched a Japanese film in forever.  Been meaning to watch My Neighbors the Yamadas and 9 Souls with Harriet.  Hopefully that’ll still happen.  But I wanna watch something I haven’t SEEN.  I tried watching this documentary on Akihabara, but it was just such a shoddy production that I didn’t have to determination to sit through it.  Twas cool… nothing more.

However, tonight I started watching this fucked up movie called SALO (or, the 120 Days of Sodom).  I really don’t care for it, but the stuff happening on screen is so interesting and depraved that I can’t bring myself to turn it off.  Basically, it’s this true story (I think- otherwise there’s no way a plotline of this caliber would make it onto the Criterion Collection) about how these boys and girls were captured and taken away to a private Italian Villa where these fascist leaders set up a type of sexual retreat where they were allowed to do whatever they pleased to the kids.  And basically it’s a TON of homosexual sodomy occurring randomly and usually painfully.  It’s not exactly cringe-worthy… but it is most definitely one of those movies that’ll have you saying, “What the fuck?” quite a bit.  I dunno.  Do I recommend it?  Nah.  But if you’re looking for something controversial and something that’s gonna stomp, jump, and destroy a bunch of taboos- then Salo’s your movie.

Yeah.  p.s.- it’s been a while since I’ve seen a great movie.  Anti Christ is totally one of the best movies of the year/potentially one of my all-time faves- but it was just so insane that I feel like I didn’t enjoy it WHILE I was there.  It’s one of those movies that yes- if I think about it, it’s a beautifully haunting film.  But I have a hard time admitting that it was so good just because of the subject matter.  Haha… I really do want to see it again so badly- that imagery is STILL stuck with me.  But at the same time, the movie is exhausting to sit through.  Part of me doesn’t know if I can have the strength to endure it’s brief hour and a half runtime again.  Fantastic Mr. Fox and 2012 are out.  I really want to see those.  Fantastic Mr. Fox is reviewing incredibly well and 2012 just looks like an onslaught of mindless fun.  Saw Donna today- she said This Is It is phenomenal and Kirby said the same, so you know me and the Duemigs will be making a trip to the theatre for that one.

Anyways, this has been a pretty lame blog and I’m super tired, so I should just grab some shuteye.  But… even though I find these types of blogs “stupid” nowadays… I really should do them more often.  I’m going to kick myself so hard when I have basically all of my highschool career documented here through my WordPress blogs, yet none of my collegiate career.  Granted, there’s been a lot going on that I really have purposefully chosen to neglect writing about.  But I can’t keep doing that.  Life is filled with joy, sadness, triumphs, defeat- I need to capture that all.

p.s.- Chris wrote me today saying how badly he wants to just be able to hang with me 2 to 3 times a week, chilling out and just talking with some good music on in the background.  There’s a man I wish more than anything that I could do the same with.  Fuck that ocean that separates us.  Haha.. and I have to include that the kid has no problem admitting he wants so badly to be related to me.  Now that’s raditude.

Ich habe des Öfteren das Gefühl, ich bin eine faule Sau mit zuviel Spielzeug… Da habe ich lauter tolle Instrumente und mehrere verschiedene Aufnahmesysteme – trotzdem nehme ich nicht jeden Tag auf, nicht mal jeden zweiten!    

Die Musik ist nicht so das Problem, es ist eher so, dass ich mit (kröhöm) zunehmendem Alter immer wählerischer mit meinen Texten werde. “Juh lahf mie ent ei lahf juh nau ewribaddie schuh-bie-du ” besorgt’s mir nicht mehr so richtig   

Gut, dass Frank mir dafür immer mal wieder mit richtigen Knüllern auf die Sprünge hilft!

Vor ein paar Tagen trudelte unverhofft ein neuer Text in der eMail bei mir ein. Ich brauchte den nur ein paar Mal durchlesen, und schon lief bei mir im Kopf ein bestimmtes Rhythmuspattern los. Heute im Bus auf dem Weg heim war dann plötzlich im Großen und Ganzen die gesamte Struktur mitsamt der Melodie da.

Nichts wie im Laufschritt nach Hause, rein in mein Kabäuschen ein paar Spuren als Grundgerüst in Garageband gelegt, ein Vokal-Take im ProTools, dann noch einer zum Flicken einiger doofer Phrasierungen – und schon erblickt ein neues Lied das Licht meines unaufgeräumten Heimstudios.

Die Aufnahme hat noch einige ehrliche Ecken und Kanten, aber das ist vielleicht auch mal ganz erfrischend im Zeitalter der Publikumsverarsche mit Auto-Tune etc.         

M-Audio Onyx-i

A couple of weeks ago at the AES Convention in New York City, Mackie announced that its Onyx-i Series mixers have been qualified by Avid for use with Pro Tools M-Powered mixers. (Click here for further details.)

In previous installments (see part 1 and part 2), I have reviewed the Onyx-i from marketing and product overview standpoints, and now in light of the Mackie/Avid agreement, it’s time to look at the actual functionality of the M-Powered Onyx-i Series.

Newly purchased Onyx-i mixers should be registered at my.mackie.com. Registration is free and recommended by Mackie.

It’s no accident that you haven’t heard his name. Justin Credible a.k.a. the RocstaR could quite possibly be the main frame behind of one of your favorite tunes hip hop and R&B  in the past couple of years. “It’s about time I get a little credit for some of my work” he explains. He legally isn’t saying exactly all of the work he’s done, however he explains “My sound is more universal and let’s just say I’ve got a little more experience under my belt now. It’s all a learning experience.”  Being in the studio with Justin Timberlake and getting it in from Memphis (his hometown) to Miami to Las Vegas with some of your favorite rapper’s rappers doesn’t hurt either…I’m sure.

Wow. Great movie, just for the simple fact that someone was capable of making a film without stupid things jumping out at you like those youtube shockers and things of that nature (we’ve all encountered the maze or color test I’m sure)

This has by far been one of the best paranormal movies I think I have ever seen. It’s no wonder this $25,000.00 budget movie made uber millions! This movie takes you through a view of the other side, which if you’ve never experienced a paranormal event, it gives you a pretty good idea of what types of things you could expect. Footsteps, scratching, knocking,  inhuman breathing through EVP (electronic voice phenomenon). I have heard of people being disappointed in this movie and that is probably due to the fact that they’re so used to having something leap out at you with some wacky film effects and lots of LFE going on.

Paranormal Activity gets a 5/5 in my movie rating book for thrills and suspense. This movie exemplifies how a paranormal thriller should be! Honestly, I did not even want to look at my monitor in full screen because I was completely suspecting some wild looking demonic figure to just pop out in front of the camera to make me have to put on my Depends =P.

The boyfriend however was a serious douche who just made everything worse, to all you kids out there interested in playing with a Ouija board or spirit board, DON’T DO IT! Take it from someone who has had numerous paranormal events in his life and has certain abilities. Pissing off an inhuman is definitely something you do not want to do….The ending was a disappointment to a point, I wish they wouldn’t have shot Katie at the end, I know that’s kinda the point, but still, could have made it longer and shown the after effects and stuff, ah well, I just know what I would’ve liked to have seen ending-wise.
