THE DANGER OF PROCASTINATION Procastination is a danger your success in life! As we all know we love to give excuses for not doing things all the time. We may have plenty of ideas running in our heads and we can visualise the desired results we want and then forget to come up with tactics and strategies to implement our ideas. Its great to visualise everyday but we have to shift our focus on the steps and action we have to take in order to accomplish our goals! Most of the time we keep talking about what we want and what we have to do…but we hardly put our words into action! There could be so many excuses we could give to ourselves and others. So we can come up with a whole list of excuses like: -	I have been busy with work -	I go out too much -	Im not feeling right…I feel buggered and cant be bothered.. -	I don’t feel like doing anything after work.. -	Im too tired -	I don’t have the time -	I don’t need to do this -	My friends ask me to go out too much -	Im angry and not in the mood to do it -	And the list will just go on and on..and before you know it you have not done anything at all!! We all living a busy life and so you are not the only one that is busy..many more people are just as busy but can do great things in life! Time is precious and we should make use of it…the time we use to boast, talk party, go out, lets make use of it and actually do something productive. Of course you need to take the time to relax and chill out but I’m sure if we put our excuses behind and actually take the steps to move forward we can actually find the time to do what you want. Work with what you are doing and now! No matter what your goals are, you can always break it down to mini goals for the day, so you ensure that you are taking small steps to achieve your big goals. Every step you take every day counts, but if you don’t do anything but just dream of ideas and just visualize then expect to have an outcome well then I can guarantee you won’t achieve anything at all. Here are tips to help you get started! -	get a diary and plan your schedule -	Scribble on a piece of a paper when you usually get really tired and when your energy levels are up. Its important to understand yourself and know what time of the day you have a lot of energy and motivated to do something. If it’s a lunch time or a specific time during work, then take a break and choose to do something productive around that time! -	Plan your day and the week- fit in the little tasks you have set yourself! Trust me when you have achieved something little for the day you will feel better than doing nothing at all. Remember to take small steps “only a bite at a time” you will never finish a large whole cake in one bite so take small bites at a time in order to finish it! If you can’t achieve something little how can you achieve your bigger goal? So don’t overwhelm yourself too much by thinking of the end-result or outcome but rather just focus on what you have to do for the DAY ONLY…and know that you are capable of completing it within the day so that way you wont be discouraged when you don’t achieve your task for the day! See for myself I find that I struggle heaps when it comes to blogging because I feel like I can never find the time to blog but I will have a million of ideas running through my head. I will ask myself when can I blog? But every time I go to gym after work, and then get home have dinner and shower I realize that I just can’t look at another computer screen again! So I have a come to a conclusion that after work I am not productive so I should perhaps use this time to relax and read instead. During this time I feel like I’m not doing anything to achieve the goal I have in mind but in fact I am because I am letting my mind rest and recharge. This then helps me a lot to re-think and re-evaluate what I should do to achieve my goals. On the other hand when there are times that I have heaps of ideas and I am less tired such as during my lunch break, I will actually sit down and write down ideas for my blogs are actually start typing away…weird but it works! I still work at my own pace and I have also learnt to work around my busy schedule. I know that after work I will definitely go to gym and then go out on most days so by the time I go home it will be too late to sit in front of a computer screen and blog because the last thing I want to do is just relax and wind back before I sleep! So whenever you feel like not doing something, then you have break down your task into a smaller task because if it’s a big task you don’t want to do it completely which means you are just throwing out your dreams and ambitions out the window at the end…don’t think that something little a day does not count, it does COUNT because regardless how much you do, you are still a step closer in achieving your goals! So don’t stop visualizing and acting!!!!

Here are the things that I always procastinated -

1. Washing my car.

2. Go to any Government office.

3. Calling customer care.

4. Fix the things in my bathroom.

5. Teaching my wife how to drive a car.

6. Waking up in the morning.

7. Taking bath in cold water.

The important point to notice is when you start doing it, it becomes easy. After achievement you think it was not at all difficult.

I just realised that today it’s exactly two months ago that I found the FlyLady System. Two months that made a huge difference to my home and to me feeling homey at home.

I have uncluttered knickknacks, books, clothes and shoes. I dusted, vacuumed, cleaned windows, swished, swiped, cleaned doors, lamps, re-ordered book shelves, emptied the space under my bed, sorted all of my paper work and I don’t know what.

Most of the time I felt very strong about my doing and enjoyed the process. I still don’t like house work but doing it in little steps lets me find it doable and tolerable.

Nevertheless it becomes winter now and I feel more lazy and less energised. Somehow last week I didn’t do any assignments which is something I don’t feel good about. I thought about the reason for it because 15 minutes a day is very doable.

Beside feeling more tired I think I might need to make myself more accountable. I saw different threads in the FlyLadyForum about accountability. As I don’t like the set up of the forum much I have decided to do my own here. I’ll post the weekly sneak peek and will update my doing of it daily. Let’s see how it works.

A lot of times in this life, we promise ourselves that things will get better. Maybe when we get that promotion we’ve been waiting for, maybe when we lose some wait, whatever the case this is true for most people. I recently came across a file on my home computer entitled “GOALS 2009″. It is mid October and by all means I have had plenty of time to complete many of these tasks. The dirty, rotten god-damned truth is I can’t really say I completed one fucking thing on this list. That really pisses me the fuck off. I gave my self 1 entire year to do about 20 or so things and I couldn’t even do the easy ones. How fucking lame am I. The real reason I bring this up though, because normally I would privately wallow in shame, and self hatred, bu the real reason I bring this up is because I can’t think of one person I have ever met in my entire life that has actually accomplished all of their new years resolutions. Can you think if anyone? If so, you can just get the fuck out of here right now. I am writing this post as a challenge to myself. I have roughly 2 and a half months left in this year of our motherfucking lord 2009, and I am motivated to take a big old nasty dump of satisfction all over that list once I have checked off every single task on it.

LET THE WILD RUMPUS START!

Have you ever heard this before – “if only I had more money or a business or lived in another city, my life would be completely different.” Would having one minor change in someone’s life magically transform the years of habits, behaviors and personality of that individual?

The reality is it wouldn’t. If a person does not know how to manage wealth, winning the lottery will not result in living a luxurious lifestyle for the rest of that person’s life. We are all creatures of habit. We like to believe certain things about ourselves, whether we are aware of them or not. We constantly make decisions and surround ourselves with people that reinforce the beliefs we have about our lives.

It is no wonder we feel disappointment when we do get what we want. “What? That’s it? It wasn’t as special or magical as I had thought it to be.” We create a distorted image of our dream and are deeply disappointed when reality is not congruent with our dream. We exaggerate the positive aspects and set our expectations too high; we fail to see something for what it really is. We forget that everything comes with a price tag.

The reality is it doesn’t take that much to pursue your dreams. You don’t have to be rich to travel and you can own a home without first becoming a millionaire. Starting your own business is not that tough and you do not need 20 years of experience. Start to see things differently and live your life today. Don’t postpone your dreams and the next time you catch yourself saying “If only…,” stop – tell yourself to live your dream today.

Huh, I’m back from Berlin and enjoyed it very much but I was VERY tired yesterday and simply lazy. After opening my door I realised another incentive of being uncluttered – it’s sooooooooo nice to come into a home that’s clean and sorted.

Anyway, I felt lazy did nothing of what I planed yesterday BUT today I took up Kelly’s mission plus I changed the sheets and put on one load of laundry immediately. I feel good.

I also feel shocked.

Shocked, because, while putting away the dry laundry that I hung up before I left, I realised that I still had some clothes on my heater. I mean that was the whole issue that actually started my “journey”.

I had sorted through part of my closet already and I had empty space in it though I know that there are still things in it I can get rid of. And here perfectionism is rearing its ugly head!

Subconsciously I didn’t want to put my clothes into my closet before having uncluttered EVERYTHING!

OH MY!

It’s like the FlyLady describes that we don’t want to put our clean plates into a dirty cupboard.

I cannot believe I fell into this trap. Anyway, I realised it and put away the clothes immediately + I ironed my whole tops for this week so that I am prepared in the morning!

I feel good.

There are four steps in eliminating procrastination that can frustrate our goal setting process. The

There are four steps in eliminating procrastination that can frustrate our goal setting process. They are 1) slowing down, 2) using your eyes, 3) redirection and 4) taking action. Each one is simple but combined they are a powerful methodology for eliminating procrastination from our lives. This process isn’t a single instance because it is common to continue to apply this system time-after-time because habits are hard to break. Even after a long period of time, it is easy to slip into procrastinating again.

The first step is to take the time to slow down and mediate about the area we are procrastinating. Must we really accomplish this thing? How do we really feel in our heart? Where does this fit in our goal setting process? The outcome here is the determination to go on or to drop it. By deciding to continue, we acknowledge that the task must be done and that we are willing to accomplish it.

Next we must use our eyes and mind to see what’s going on. What’s good about it? What’s bad about it? What’s distracting me? What do I want or need to change? How and when can I change things to eliminate the obstacles? This insightful seeing really identifies what changes can be beneficial for us. It results in a new goal-setting plan, albeit a soft plan, which we can then refine. It also helps strengthen your resolve.

This moves us to the third area of redirection. We now examine the soft plan formed in the previous step. Here we use all of our skills to make it a concrete goal-setting plan. We decide how to accomplish it and perhaps create intermediate steps to get the big thing done. The outcomes here are to both create a concrete plan and also to strengthen our commitment in accomplishing it. We will become energized to accomplish that thing we had been avoiding.

Finally, we come to what was previously a wall–doing the task. At this point, we will be enthused, committed and have a plan of action. Now, we need to go out and work the plan. Because of the momentum toward accomplishing it we have created in the previous steps, this won’t be as difficult as it once was. Having examined the task throughout this exercise, we have really been proving to ourselves that we must get it done, we can get it done and then how we will get it done. Those are the hard things. This final one–doing it is really just the culmination of what has gone before. We use all this momentum to carry us through accomplishment–We Win! Goal setting has succeeded.

In closing, here are a few additional points. Procrastination is a reoccurring phenomenon. Be easy on yourself, especially in the beginning. Old habits fight very hard to retain control. Even if you aren’t entirely successful at first, the fact that you have made progress should feel good. As more time passes and your successes increase, your confidence and ability to kick the procrastination habit will increase. Sometimes, forward movement comes is jerky steps and not all of them are forward–Sometimes we go back. But, if we keep hammering the wall, procrastination will fall to our persistence.
Leadership Theories
Leadership Theories

I have been consciously trying to optimize and enhance the way I work/live – both professional

I have been consciously trying to optimize and enhance the way I work/live – both professionally and personally.

One of the things which proved to be an eye-opener for me is the fact that clutter (digital, physical, mental and any form for that matter) plays an important role in bringing down one’s over all productivity due to various reasons.

Below are forms of clutter in my life and how I have been tackling them lately (again, the below are specific to me and not many people might have them in their life):

- Digital Clutter in the form of over-flowing mails: I have a separate huge blog post saved in the drafts at the time of this writing. While I really want to spend quality time explaining to you on how to manage your inbox (in a different blog post later) , I would like you to be aware of the ill-effects of overflowing mails. While this may not be a problem for many of us, it did prove to be a huge productivity sucker in my case.

Mail inbox, both personal and official, are the easiest to become cluttered. You can blame that on technology for having brought this kind of ease in delivering information.

The ill-effects of digital clutter is that, applications such as email clients become a burden over a period of time, rather than being a tool which enhances your professional and personal life.

Solution: First of all, do a clean up once to archive and delete all your old mails which are older than 2 months.

Second, unsubscribe from newsletters and mail groups which you haven’t been reading for the past 1 month.

Third, Set rules to sort your mails into different folders (or flag them accordingly) to enable you to process the least important ones quickly. When you clear the least important ones quickly, it has 2 advantages – one, you gain immediate confidence due to the fact that you cleared a bulk of your mails real quick. Two, you have cleared the least important ones, so you do not procrastinate reading the important ones by going back to the least important ones (you have none now).

Fourth, you don’t have to read every line in mails which are the obvious BAU (Business-As-Usual) mails and mails in which you are copied as a part of the group. You can right away mark them as read.

Fifth, you don’t have to respond to a mail using a mail. Some conversations are easily solved by picking up the phone and using your chat software.

Lastly, use a different email account for subscribing to newsletters and for registering at different websites.

- Digital Clutter in the form of a crowded PC Desktop: I bet this a problem for most of us. Desktops have become a convenient way to access the most important files, folders and applications. But it has also become the most convenient place to dump most of the temporaraly files, folders and application shortcuts. To some extent, the application developers are responsible for this confusion.

Though some may argue that dumping as much they want in the desktop enhances productivity, I always believe that it is a source for confusion, iritation and worry for many. Simple analogy is a usual physical desk of yours. Given a choice for your physical desk, how many of your would choose to have a clean and empty desk as against a crowded desk with all the documents spread on it. Thats the same case for the PC Desktop.

Solution: First step: Start to clean up your existing desktop. Create a folder called Desktop2 and dump all the files and folders into it. This is the most quickest way to clear the clutter. Then delete all the unwanted application shortcuts. If you haven’t clicked on a shortcut in the past 1 month, then there is a slim chance that you would do that now.

Then make sure you create one or two folders to store the temporaray files and folders that you may access very often.

Next step is to make sure you are consicious about not saving folders in the desktop directly. Make sure you save them in the one of the folders you have in your desktop.

I usually have one folder in which I dump all my files and two text files – contacts.txt and to-do.txt.

- Digital Clutter in the form of SMS: I hope, at least off late, agree with me on this. I receive on a average at least 20 SMS advertisements. Some times, even more. And on top of that, I also receive at least 10 more SMSs because I have subscribed with my bank, shop or some online service (Google, Twitter, etc.) to receive them.

SMS becomes a problem over a period of time, especially if you have a phone which does not allow you to easily delete your SMSs. For example, my low-end Nokia phone allows me to very painfully delete SMS on at a time.

Solution: First of all, unsubscribe your self from all the services where you had chosen to receive the SMSs. Second, block the unwanted sms by calling your phone operator and asking them to block numbers which are spamming your sms inbox. Third, if you have a more sophisticated phone, then you may install a free sms spam filter software. Fourth, don’t ever disclose your phone number any website or in the back of your cheques or other physical forms. The second one (cheques) is the most common place for spammers to pickup your numbers.

- Digital and/or Physical Clutter in the form of multiple sources of Information: I have had this problem of thousands of news articles from hundreds of RSS sources cluttering my RSS News Reader (I use Google Reader).

That apart, you would have subscribed for a newsletter from lots of news sites. This especially does dual harm. Not only does it clutter your inbox, but also forms a part of information clutter.

Another more common form of clutter is multiple magazines and newspapers. They tend to easly clutter your living room and tables.

Solution: If you have been reading news from a particular site, then you are not going to read them any time in future. You go ahead and remove them from your RSS news reader and/or from your list of favorites.

Unsubscribe yourself from all the newsletters that haven’t read for the past 1 month. Again, your wouldn’t be reading them anytime in future.

Lastly, try to stay with one particular website and/or newspaper and/or magazine and see if you are able to read/consume every bit of information in it. Most probably, that should be good enough for you to know. Also, remember, most of the news sites and papers repeat the same news. So if you have read it here, then you wouldn’t want to be reading it in a different from to finally realize that you just wasted your time.

- Digital Clutter in the form of social networking: No No.. I am not saying not go on Facebook! Social networking is required and sometimes encouraged… especially in these days where life has become hectic and our chances of physically networking has become slim.

But what I am saying is that, you don’t have to be network with the same friends in multiple different sites such as facebook, myface, orkut, twitter, etc.

Again, this may not apply for everyone, but it did apply for me . I had and still have a major problem consolidating so many different social networking platforms.

As of today, I am available on Facebook (relatively active), Twitter and LinkedIn.

Solution: Consolidate. Try to join the social networking site where most of your friends/colleagues are. Invite them to join your social networking site/group.

If you still have to leave a status message in 2/3 different sites where your friends are divided, then try using a software which can do this in one shot. For example, I leave my status in Facebook and Twitter in one shot using TweetDeck.

- Digital Clutter in the form of multiple email accounts: I had around 7 to 8 different personal email accounts with different providers. Again, this may not be the case with everyone.

As of today, I have 2 active accounts and 2 more less active ones as backup.

Solution: No big deal again. Just consolidate your multiple accounts into 2 email accounts. One is for your real communication with family, friends and colleagues. Second one is for subscribing to newsletters (if you absolutely need to do that) and using them to register at different sites. Usually you don’t have to worry about consolidating your multiple email accounts. If you don’t access them for some days/months, your account automatically gets disabled and your mails cleared ).

- Physical Clutter in the form of bank and credit card statements: I receive so many statements, from Banks especially, that I had lost interest in reading them entirely. Since, I realized that some of these letters are important, I use to conveniently stack them away at multiple places – my home desk, side tables, office bag, etc.

Over a period of time, you realize that you have so much clutter everywhere because of these statements.

Solution: Go green! Now a days, banks give you an option of going green by choosing to receive statements in your email inbox (of course, banks want to cut down the cost by saving paper and shipping charges). Just go with this option. Receiving statements in your mail is very convenient and reduces your physical clutter a lot.

Don’t procrastinate processing these statement: Reading them immediately and either tear them upfront and file them if you really them. Filing them is better than stacking them away in different places without even removing it from the envelope.

To be continued.. (I have so much to write but I can’t wait to share this with you immediately. Will keep updating this post).

I wish I could be witty about it, but I can’t… this post comes from sheer frustration and concern. I’ve been meaning to get my first novella published, for quite a while now. A friend/editor expressed great interest in it, even managed to get a mutual friend to read it ad give me feedback abou it. The publication of my book, in pdf form, has been delayed for reasons I can’t fathom: what does my friend do with his time after work? Does he enjoy being one of The Irresponsibles, or is he part of a radical cult that has mind games as part of its M.O.? Can anyone tell me, or if they know him… would you please ask him?

And I’m not sure why. I woke up late because I had an awesome time at a party last night (NO I WAS NOT DRINKING). I did however partake in a table-to-mattress slip-and-slide and join in the festivities at the fountain (which apparently also goes by the name “drunk tank”). I also saw the craziest shooting star of my life and engaged a fellow Christian in religious dialog. Is dialog spelled right? Dialogue? *shrug*

So I’ve been working crazy hard and I’m taking a little me time. My stipend finally came through! Yes I do plan on buying a few things. I’m gonna pay my parents back first, $25 deposit to GoMusic.ru, medicine ball, and eventually a graphics card. May need to invest in a solid memory stick too, like an 8GB or something.

That’s all for now! Guess I should go to work. Ciao all!
