Paradise in the land of Pinewood Studios

I have just got back to the midlands, having spent the last two hours driving up the M25 having driven down it yesterday. Reason for this? Answer attending a networking event organised by an agency that I am registered with. The event was meant to be in January but as many of you know about the freaky weather we had at that time, it got cancelled. Now that was a bummer! However the sun shone the sky was clear and there were no accidents when I left at lunchtime.

Made it on site about two hours before the event kicked off, which worked in my favour; I decided to go and say ‘Hi’ to the security guys I met last year when working as an usher, and I must say they were very happy to see me. It was great having a catch up as they know everything that is going on on all the different sites. They also suggested I visit the mail room, which I did before heading to Heatherden Hall. I learned that that building was used as the Governors residency in the film ‘Carry On Up The Khyber’. Funny thought crossed my mind; we should all reenact the scene where they are all sitting down to dinner then we could all get ‘Plastered’.

When the event kicked off at 6pm, it was a case of doing what I’d done at previous events; walking up to people, talk and then give them a business card. It was really cool that I met up with some of the people I had seen at previous events and we had a great catch up, which made my day even better.

Though one woman who I met saw my CV and was excited at the fact that I had a degree in History, insisted on taking my business card and saying she wanted to hire me on a project that is currently in pre-production. One thing she said to me was that I should be looking for AD work and for Junior Researcher roles too as I have way too much experience as a runner now to still be one, so that’s a thought to consider.The person she was standing next to took my card too as she said she knows someone who is looking for runners.

Eventually we had to wrap up our conversations with everyone else and leave as 8.30pm came round so fast, all in all it was a great night. I hope I can go back to Pinewood for future events or for work fingers crossed. I hope the next posting I add to my site is one of interest and intriguing. Happy reading x

When you look around, the main form of video imagery you see comes from a screen. There are a lot more screens now than there were several of years ago. Screens have seemed to become the updated version of the poster. The fact that screens are easy to read and receive a lot of data in a short amount of time make them powerful instruments. Not to mention it doesn’t require printing materials to make. But as an artist, we often think of ways to change the concept of displaying information. Back then, the printing press served as a innovation for producing multiple copies in a shorter amount of time. As the years progressed, that method had become refined creating faster and more clear messages. Luftwerk wasn’t just about the message they were trying to send. They focused on how they would display their work by using projections. They were able to not only project on a screen, but on other surfaces as well. Things like ice blocks, outside of building, plazas, fabrics, stringed material, and even on landmarks such as Falling Water by Frank Lloyd Wright. Even though projectors have been around for several decades, Luftwerk was able to re-design and re-purpose a way to use projectors in order to create unique art pieces. In the application to my work, when displaying artwork to the world, not only does one have to consider what you will display, one must also have to consider how to display it.

Jester's performance (April 13th)

Last weekend, I performed at Alfred University under the Jester’s group. The performance was in the Powell building at 7pm, and along with our usual improv performance, we incorporated a few stand-up acts. As for games, I play human putty, sound effects, and new choice. The show went particularly well, especially since it was the first Jester’s show on the AU campus.

The thing that it taught me, is that sometimes you need to tailor your work for a specific audience. As an almost all-male group, we generally don’t focus on most female brands of comedy. It pretty unfortunate, because we’re limiting ourselves from a lot of opportunities. When we performed at AU, most of the audience was female. While I always try to keep my performance gender-neutral, as a man, I only have that experience to relate to. When on stage, I keep in mind that there were more women in the audience. I barely had to change material, but I did use less vulgarity and I think my performance improved because of it. I didn’t need to rely on shock to get laughs.

I think of this because in animation, everything takes much longer, and should be planned. If I’m building something for a client, and don’t know who the audience is, the chance of the project failing is higher, and the chance of offended someone is higher. Both of those things can lose you a job, which makes this a lesson I need to remember.

An Exploration Into Forgiveness by Dr. Donald Kraybill

Attending the lecture at Village Hall had shed light on certain situations both in the real world and in my personal schema. Dr. Kraybill had discussed the event that took place at Nickel Mines School on October 2, 2006. A gunman took young female students hostage at an Amish school and shot ten of the girls, killing five of them, before committing suicide. To a person who didn’t know any further information would automatically have ill feelings towards the shooter. Dr. Kraybill continued to elaborate on the event by going into detail about what motivated the shooter. His name was Charles Carl Roberts IV, and he was an ordinary individual. Apparently he had lost a young daughter and this was probably a primary justification he may have considered. The actual reason why he decided to attack that school in the Amish Community is still unknown. The main reason this story was so important was because of how quick the Amish families had forgiven Roberts and how supportive they where to his family members. The main thing that I took out of this lecture is how the Media can describe a story and create a inaccurate sense of perception towards any situation, person, or idea. Just thinking about how I reacted when I first heard this news without any prior information and further detail, I realized that I was a victim to the media. I automatically felt that Roberts was a bad person and needed justice just like the people who first heard this news. The important thing is to remain neutral and see several sides to any given story for the truth can be covered by personal opinion. A good philosophy to live by is subtracting oneself from the equation. The Media is a powerful tool, but since it is growing more accessible to everyone, the power of persuasion and misinformation is also growing. With that in mind, we as people, must be more open minded so we don’t fall victim to the media. As the artist who creates that media, they must also consider how much control they have and the consequences of the decisions they make with that control.

Production Update 39

Writing production blogs is one reason Mondays are tolerable, so let’s jump in and see what’s going on as of late. This week I sent a copy of the prologue to my music composer to work on. We discussed the tone of the music and I feel confident we have a strong direction that fits the overall prologue. I look forward to seeing what he can come up with, he is a very talented artist that has created some tracks for other personal projects. He is also the composer of the 5 second bumper for reanimated fallout, my personal site for my professional work and training videos. We also hammered out a definitive timeline for the prologue, 90 seconds.

This week I also got a good chunk of compositing done on one of the remaining 2 shots. The 5 drawings drawings I needed to create are all now in the prologue. However, I do feel that I need to create a couple more which I have drawn this week and will get inked, colored and shaded to be added into the shot.

This week I also discovered a render error in the second shot that required a complete re-render. I was not happy with myself after discovering this. Mainly because I rendered it out when I was working in Vegas and didn’t ned my lap top. I should had checked the render sooner than I did since the re-render took up my laptop for about a day and a half. Which made working in After Effects a little less than desirable, especially when compositing and working with video files and 3D layers.

The other shot rendered fine except I did have some trouble with the import of the Cinema 4D file to After effects. This was a small thing that was overlooked and has been resolved. When exporting the project file, I had it only exporting out a section of frames instead of the whole shot, which added to things not lining up. I was rendering things in sections when I was in Vegas and figured out what happened when I opened up the project files. Fortunately this was an easy fix and didn’t require a re-render. Certainly a mistake that I will not make again.

On the topic of drawings and new images, I completed inking the remaining shots for last week and they are all dropped into the shot they are needed. The new images will be added into the scene I am working on now. I am looking at getting a new production image up next week when this shot is finished up. Stay Tuned for more updates!

BUILDING BLOCKS/CHOICES/DEFINITIONS

Traditionally (or at least ‘historically’ as far as we can tell from the available sources) a person’s understood identity revolved around his station in life, his occupation, his pursuits, his social standing.

Ask a teenager now who they are, and you’ll likely face a barrage of information relating to what they do in their spare time, who their friends are, what music they listen to, what clothes they wear, where they shop, their aspirations, and where they see themselves being in a few years’ time.

If you asked the same question of an adult, you’d probably be presented with what at first seems depressingly similar to that of their historical counterparts – job, where they live, hobbies.

But this similarity is deceptive.

Just as we have internal checks telling us to tell the truth about ourselves, we also have a filter in place that manages what we say about ourselves when asked certain questions.

Put simply, if you’re a day labourer and you introduce yourself as an ‘ex-law student, hoping to go back once you manage to get out of your garret,’ you probably won’t like the result, so you just go with what appears to be the safer option.

Those teenagers will be adults in a few years’ time, so do all those hopes, those aspirations disappear?

Do we get ‘locked in’ as it were, at a certain point, to a certain ‘path,’ do our choices evaporate, leaving us only with the consequences of those choices we have already made?

Or is this a generational difference, indicative of the fast-paced societal – and cultural – change that we find ourselves subjected to? Do these younger people have more choice, more flexibility than their elders?

Or is it just that, as time goes by, as hopes and aspirations become targets that are either met or missed, that different things come to matter more to us, or less?

Or is it that, faced with an increasingly daunting and varied range of choices that society offers us, we cling to what we know?

Again, all of these things are true, and yet more or less true, depending on who is asking the question.

The experiences and opportunities open to a middle-aged black immigrant are fundamentally different to those of an upper-class public schoolboy, but do those descriptors really capture the ‘essence’ of the differences between them? Is the fact that the description is in the context of the variance between them indicative of the way we approach others?

Would the public schoolboy even identify as being ‘upper-class,’ when calling yourself ‘upper-class’ is considered to be the very height of gauche? What would he call himself? ‘The son of a working man who got lucky in the 80s and went full-on nouveau-riche and decided he had to send his kids to boarding school, fuck my life I hate this place’ ?

And what would the immigrant think about the fact that he’s black, originating as he does from a majority-black country? Would he identify as an immigrant? Is he chasing a dream, or scrounging? Or is he the father of three children, holding a phd in astrophysics and for some obscure reason or accident of birth an arch Thatcherite?

Do we become defined by what we do, or what we want to do?

Are we who we are, who we want to be, or who other people think we are?

How do we define ourselves, and do we get to decide that for ourselves?

Or do we tread a fine line between deciding for ourselves and taking on board how others would define us so as not to invoke the dreaded spectre of cognitive dissonance, leading as that might to someone challenging our identity?

As an old saying would have it, “The Child is the Father of the Man,” meaning that our experiences and hopes during childhood have a very real, and very definitive influence on how we turn out as adults, but what happens when those experiences, those memories of those experiences, are subject to the whims of an unreliable narrator?

And what happens if how we define ourselves, if the one thing that we think makes us ‘us’ suddenly changes, ceases to be, vanishes?

Walking Dead Re-shoot

Consigue ayuda! No porque puedas grabar significa que irías a hacer un mejor trabajo que alguien que se dedica y vive de esto profesionalmente.

Dicho esto, cuando decidas venir a Nashville para que te ayudemos a producir, grabar y mezclar tu música, ten estas cosas en mente.

MÚSICOS
Contrata músicos profesionales cuando puedas. Te impresionaría lo que pueden hacer con tu música y la rapidez con la que trabajan! Estos cuates graban 4-6 canciones completas en un solo día y cada canción termina sonando 10 veces mejor de lo que tu hubieras podido hacer con otros músicos no profesionales! Hacen que tu inversión en el estudio valga la pena. Créemelo!

La primera vez que vi lo rápido que los músicos de Nashville trabajan me quedé con la boca abierta! Escucharon la idea de la canción, leyeron la música y comenzaron a trabajar perfeccionando cada parte de la música!

Ahora, si ya tienes una banda que toca contigo, pueden grabar la mayoría de las canciones y contratar músicos solamente para agregar los toques finales y dar acentos especiales a ciertas canciones.

PRODUCTORES Y INGENIEROS
No cualquiera es la persona indicada para cada trabajo porque puede que no entienda tu estilo musical o que no se lleve bien con tu banda. Así que, trabaja con personas con quienes te sientes cómodos y que saquen el jugo a tus habilidades como músico. Preferiblemente, alguien con experiencia en tu género musical.

ESTUDIOS
Aquí en Nashville no puedes manejar dos cuadras sin que des con algún estudio en la casa de alguien o un estudio profesional con múltiples piezas y todos los equipos que necesites. El estudio que escojas va a depender de varios factores, incluyendo:
- Cuanto espacio necesites?
- El monto de tu presupuesto?
- Los beneficios de un estudio sobre otro?
- Algunos estudios ofrecen estadías.
Etc, etc.

RECORDING & MIXING

Get help! Don’t do it just because you can. You’re good a what you do because you practice day in, day out. And so are we at producing, recording, mixing and mastering because that’s what we live off.

With that said, here are some things you need to keep in mind when you decide to come to Nashville to record your songs.

MUSICIANS
Hire studio musicians when possible, they’ll blow you away! Your songs will come to full fruition once these guys get their hands on it! Trust me! And not only that. They’ll nock 4-6 songs out in one single day! It’ll make your studio time worth a while. Which is something you and your band will not be able to achieve to the level and perfection these guys can.

First time I saw that happened, my jaw dropped! They heard the song once, read the music chart and off they went to perfection and beyond!

Now, If you already have a full band and prefer to record most of your songs yourself, you might consider hiring musicians to add a touch of their magic here and there, and add some accents to the songs.

PRODUCERS & ENGINEERS
Not everyone is the right man for the job because they might not understand your music style, or not jive with the band. So, work with someone who is good at what they do and fits your needs. Preferably someone with previous experience in your genre.

STUDIOS
Here in Nashville you can’t drive two blocks without there being a studio somewhere in someones’ garage or a full-fledged multi-room facility. The studio you decide on will depend on several factors, including:
- How much space do you need?
- What your budget is running at?
- What are the benefits of one studio over the other?
- Does the studio offer lodging?
Etc, etc.

Cartoons-Production 2 Workshop

Old cartoons are something I truly miss and if I could only travel one way into the past I would gladly jump back just to enjoy this large influence on my childhood. I’d like to say that the old cartoons that I watched as a kid made me want to come to this school and make some of my own, but I’d sadly be lieing. I’m sure that it helped sway my decision though. What really makes old cartoons better than the newer stuff that is on tv now-a-days. Well for starters, violence was rampant in older cartoons and yes that makes them better. Newer cartoons that are steered towards teenagers are as tame as the stuff for middle schoolers. I have noticed a slight shift in the number of cartoons that are more like the older cartoons. Cartoons like Adventure Time and MAD are beginning to push the boundaries once again. I know for sure if I ever get the chance to make my own stuff it will be more like the old stuff rather than how society wants everything to be tame.

Open Showing-Production 2 Workshop

I had the pleasure of visiting Alfred University and attending an open showcase. I really enjoyed how things were run over there and it makes me really upset that we don’t have similar events held on this side of the street. It was a little bit nerve racking while over there because the kind of art that AU is accustomed to creating is a little bit more “stereotypical” and more about feeling and to me don’t make a lick of sense. I saw what I can only decipher as a piece about sex. That was interesting, but I really don’t think I needed to watch twenty minutes of a vibrating metal sheet, a shifting lamp, and a naked model turning. It really makes me see the differences between Alfred State and AU. I actually think that there should be an even larger separation in the two schools though. Alfred State should center heavily on the style of art that is more driven by story like for movies or games and not so much on the “stereotypical” art. At first I though that’s what was the case, but recently it seems that that kind of art is all that is sought after on this side as well.
