If you didn’t know New Moon was released last week you must have been on another planet! Twi-mania is everywhere and it’s a seriously hot topic in my office. Well the Edward Vs Jacob issue is certainly discussed at every opportunity! And with the stars of the film appearing in every magazine under the sun it’s hard to not get talking about the fashion too. (Check out how gorgeous Ashley Green, Nikki Reed, Jackson Rathbone and Kellan Lutz look in December Glamour).

On the Kristen Stewart front its been a little hit and miss. I’m not gonna start on the hair – surely there was something a hairdresser could have done with her Joan Jett mullet but anyway! She’s a gorgeous girl; a bit alternative, likes the rock chick look but finds the whole celeb thing a bit awkward – but that’s cool. This outfit however was not.

What the hell was she thinking? What was her stylist thinking? I know, I know it’s Proenza Schouler but it just isn’t a good look on her! She looks so much edgier in these more body-con numbers and the more feminine shapes are so much more flattering! Get its sorted Kristen.

Pretty shades of blue, green, and violet are all the rage for the holidays – and it seems they’re here to stay for Spring.

Target just announced two new exciting designer collaborations, set to launch in spring 2010!
Cynthia Vincent’s limited-editions footwear line and Eugenia Kim’s hat line will hit the stores and Target.com on April 18, 2010.

Target has become somewhat of a fashion right of passage with designers like Alexander McQueen, Anna Scheffield, Proenza Schouler and Anna Sui.

Q: While lost and dazed, in a tumultuous world of shiny, sparkly and misfit bags, I turn to you for assistance! I am looking for a spectacular messenger bag that can work both day and night, with fantastic hardware (like that found on older versions of Marc Jacobs) and noteworthy functionality (preferably a trailer home for the hard-working MacBook), and with delectable style… Most significant is the look of a cool hand bag with an across the body strap (or shoulder strap), with color taking a debatable stance. The most challenging aspect of all… is the price; although Balenciaga’s Arena Giant Covered City Bag and Proenza Schouler’s PS1 bags are most spectacular, emitting love rays to all those looking, they are sure to provide a “bread and water” holiday season- BAH HUMBUG!!! A: My dear reader, thank you for your amazing email. I love you. Moreover, I totally sympathize with your quandary. It’s so hard to find a beautiful bag that’s functional — but add in a low-cost caveat and you are really pricing yourself out of the best bags out there which are in the mid-level (not cheap, but consider them a value). I love a bargain just as much as the next girl, but as a professional-for-life, I will always need a luxe home for the stuff of my bread and butter. I’m guessing my girls out there will, too; so my advice is to spend the extra cash and get one you can love long time.

1.Gryson Olivia, $785– I don’t like to play favorites but if I had to pick one for myself, this would be it. I love the woven handles and Gryson uses the absolute softest pebbled leather which would be a pleasure to carry. The color works with everything and if you need to go from the office to a nice dinner no one would have any idea your chic bag was home to a pile of messy papers and a laptop! This bag is an investment but the versatility would pay off in the long run, when you no longer need to tote your MacBook around and have an assistant to take your dictation.

2.Tabitha Stardust, $400– I love the color and shape of this easy bag; it’s big when full and little when empty. Pale greys and ivories in winter are so luxurious and this would look great as an everyday carryall.

3.Matt + Nat Goldfrapp, $235 – A simple bag that will juuust fit your laptop and some files. Lots of pockets on the inside will keep you organized. This 100% vegan bag (23 bottles recycled!) will also win you some karma points.

4.Proenza Schouler PS1, $1,995– You are right – this bag is a fantasy! – but it’s so fabulous how could I overlook it? Doesn’t she look cute among all her little friends? The gold standard.

5.Coach Audrey, $798– My pal Coop has been rocking a really cute Coach from the new collection and I’ve been viewing the line with new eyes. I love the chain on this bag and it comes in a whole range of colors. Over at the coveted you can take a look at how great the bag looks when it is expanded and really get a sense of the size. This is a gorgeous bag and from what I hear Coach has got their quality issues resolved and is making classic, long-lasting bags once again. There are a lot of options here so make sure to check out their full assortment!

6. Kooba Jagger, $595– This was the prettiest ivory bag I saw, and although I see it getting ruined more quickly than some others, I like the details and this would definitely work on lots of different occasions. Kooba is worth looking into as a brand because their bags are comfortable, well-made, and fashionable without being overbranded.

7. Marc by Marc Jacobs Petal Tote, $498 – One of my buyers at Bloomingdale’s said the other model in this bag, the Sasha http://savvy.purseblog.com/images/Marc-by-Marc-Jacobs-Petal-to-the-Metal-Sasha-Shoulder-Bag.jpg, is totally sold out for them and that they are getting more in December. I like it, but actually prefer this Barney’s exclusive because it’s sturdier and looks like it can hold more. Not everyone will be a fan of the girly hardware but I am so sick of the push-buckles it’s refreshing to see something new.

Imagine that Alexander Wang, Proenza Schouler and Viktor+Rolf would use animals instead of models on the catwalks…or that your cat would put a Marni necklace on its wishing list for Christmas.  At least it looks cool in the fashion illustrations made by the Selby

Flat-out Fabulous

More precious to me than my lovely, yet precarious heels are my flats. They’re my everyday, go-to shoe and when they’re bright and shiny they remind of little gems (on my feet!). It’s too bad these shoes have to be released just when I’m pulling out my boots and wool socks.

JULIE: Seen Vogue Italia?

EMMA: Yes, kind of a fairytale Romanticism thing going on. Gorgeous clothes. I like the dress with the ruffles; it wouldn’t look out of place in the couture wedding gown montage in Sex and the City: The Movie.

JULIE: Yeah, the Italia shoot is gorgeous; I loved the one where she’s standing on the window.

EMMA: I have a picture up of her standing on the table in front of the window in a red dress. Is that the one?

JULIE: No, she’s in a green dress. A long, floaty number. She looks beautiful in that.

EMMA: Ah, I just saw it!

JULIE: You like?

EMMA: From the thumbnail it looks stunning… oh my god, she looks beautiful, like a Grecian goddess. That is a perfect photo in every way.

JULIE: Mark Seliger did that. He’s a genius.

EMMA: I like photographers who don’t just do a typical modelling shoot.

JULIE: The ones where they’re telling a story and not just getting a celebrity to stand in front of a background and grin.

EMMA: Or pout.

JULIE: To be honest, that’s why Vogue and Bazaar and the like are the best. Cosmo is good for a bit of ‘How to Care for Your Hair’ but if you want proper photo shoots by people who know what they’re doing then you should go to them.

EMMA: Definitely. Shame they’re so expensive. I always just stand in the shop and read them; shop assistants look at me with utter hatred.

JULIE: So do I; it’s a luxury I can only have once a month. And shop assistants look at everyone with utter hatred.

EMMA: Don’t they only come out once a month anyway?

JULIE: Yes, but you can’t have them all. Well, I can’t, anyway.

AND BACK TO PREMIERES…

EMMA: This was one dress I really liked: the white skirt and the leather halterneck top.

JULIE: For the Half-Blood Prince premiere in NYC? That was Proenza Schouler. They’re very good – big on having a different top and bottom. Lots of people are doing that at the moment; I see a lot of people who’ve sewn a skirt on a different top to make a dress.

EMMA: That’s a good idea if you can sew. Which I obviously can’t.

JULIE: Get a sewing machine!

EMMA: I’d get my hair caught in it or something. I really liked that one – different, but not in a crazy way. Again, without colour, though.

JULIE: As per.

EMMA: I do think the paler shades suit her, though; I really liked that beige Burberry she wore on Friday Night with Jonathon Ross. But then, I liked the style more than the colour.

JULIE: It was a bit… puffy.

EMMA: What, the Wossy one? It wasn’t that puffy. I thought it gave her a nice silhouette.

JULIE: It did, yeah. I think it was a standing-up dress, though, a bit like Cheryl Cole’s Vinyl record dress. It looked good standing, but looked bloody awful when she was sitting down.

EMMA: OH MY GOD! With the big chest-plate things? Terrible.

JULIE: Well, I liked it when she was standing up, but it looked ridiculous sitting down, as if she’d made it herself.

EMMA: I hated it from the start. You know how you see couture on the runway and it looks beautiful, but you know it’d look stupid to wear off the runway because it’s art? It’s like Cheryl Cole got that monstrosity straight off the runway without having it developed into ready-to-wear, so because it’s NOT on the runway it looks ridiculous.

JULIE: I feel Helena Bonham-Carter does the same, but she’s too awesome so she gets away with it.

EMMA: Yeah, it goes with her quirky, eclectic style, which Cheryl doesn’t have.

JULIE: WAGs tend not to be with the unique style so much! Having said that, I really love Chezza.

CONCLUSION!

EMMA: I feel we should wrap up with the famous flashing dress from the HBP premiere.

JULIE: Definitely.

EMMA: Which… to be honest, I didn’t like it.

JULIE: Really? I loved it. It did exactly what it was supposed to do: it made her look taller with a small waist. I thought it was beautiful.

EMMA: I think it was too old for her, and she’s got a small chest so that neckline was far too much for her. It’d be beautiful if you saw it on an older woman. But you’re right, it does make her figure look amazing.

JULIE: If it was on us, though, we’d have too much boob. I’d rather see a flat chest in that than Jordan busting out.

EMMA: Well, yeah, obviously that’d look awful in a very different way. But I think it makes her chest look masculine, especially in a frontal picture.

JULIE: I have to disagree.

EMMA: What about the fact that she later nearly flashed her boob after already having flashed her knickers?! Surely that proves it was too low. Was it Burberry, by the way?

JULIE: Ossie Clark. Vintage.

Speaking of Wes Anderson… frequent collaborator Waris Ahluwalia of House of Waris was one of the the CFDA/ Vogue Fashion Fund finalists this year. Past winners include Alexander Wang
(2008), Rogan (2007), Doo-Ri Chung (2006) and Proenza Schouler (2004). While he didn’t win the $200,000 prize (the winner was Sophie Théallet), it’s an honour to be nominated.

Aluwalia, whose recently appeared in the indie zombie film Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Undead, has my dream career. He makes cool jewelry, he co-authored the book To India With Love: From New York To Mumbai and he gets to play strong supporting roles in interesting movies.

The brand, mintdesigns was launched in 2001. They have been in Tokyo Collection since ‘03 S/S. The awards they won include the Moet et Chandon New Designer’s Award in 2005. In 2007, mintdesigns garage store opened in Shibuya PARCO. They presented their collection in the 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT THIS PLAY! show. In 2008, they presented the opening show at São Paulo Fashion Week for ‘09 S/S. Both designers currently hold positions as guest professors at the Faculty of Art and Design at Osaka Seikei University. In 2009 they presented their collection at the Milano Salone TOKYO FIBER ‘09.Mint Designs turned out a dainty crop of dresses featuring details such as shimmery stripes, textured fabric and quirky graphics. One frock featured a darling print of tiny Charlie Chaplins, while another showcased circular cutouts along the sides.

French-born designer Sophie Theallet (who now runs shop out of Brooklyn) won the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Award last night in New York. Theallet, who has worked under Jean Paul Gaultier and Azzedine Alaïa is a womenswear designer who beat out other contestants from footwear, menswear and womenswear.

The Huffington Post calls Theallet a “Michelle Obama favorite,” and if the First Lady can do for her what she did for Thakoon, this could mean big things for the “bohemian luxe” designer. Theallet is known for taking a stand and using fashion to comment on culture (only black models walked her S/S 09 runway show), but her clothes are universally flattering. So fresh.

**Bonus: if you want to know how the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund got started, Netflix the documentary Seamless, which follows award hopefuls Doo.Ri, Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough, among others.

Harvard MBA grads Jennifer Hyman and Jennifer Carter Fleiss recently launched an online service called Rent the Runway, an online company that specializes in renting designer dresses through a convenient mail-order service. The rental service features high-end brands from designers like Diane Von Furstenburg, Herve Leger, and Proenza Schouler at affordable prices ranging from $50-200 for a 4-day rental. Quite a bargain for dresses that can retail for up to $5000.00.

Living In NYC, I have seen local boutiques offer a rental service for formal dresses but at a much higher price, usually starting at $200 for a one-night non-designer rental. Although I haven’t tried the Rent the Runway service yet, what I love about their concept is the large A-List selection and simple mail-order service, which includes pre-paid packing for easy shipping.

Furthermore, the budget friendly rental prices include fees to cover dry cleaning. (Yes, they thought of that too!) Additionally, upon placing your order, they will ship your selection in two sizes, just in case your first choice isn’t a perfect fit. Great thinking girls!

Twilight fever hit a very chilly London last night as thousands of fans (mainly girls screaming for a dude named Robert, funnily enough!) attended the fan event for ‘The Twilight Saga: New Moon’. The event was being held in place of a premiere in London, but meant die-hard Twilight fans had the chance to see their blood sucking idols before the films release next week (20th November FYI!) and some VERY lucky fans got to attend a Twilight Q&A with the stars!

Aaaaah...Marc and Lorenzo in loooooove!

Marc Jacobs and his lover Lorenzo Martone  originally planned on having a very small, two-person wedding at the end of August.  It was never confirmed after the fact, though, and it sounds like that’s because it hasn’t happened yet.  Jacobs told the Times UK: “We still haven’t fixed the date but Lorenzo and I believe in commitment. We’re quite classic like that. We’ve got the license, hence the rumors that we’d already got married. So hopefully it will happen in 2010. When it does, it will be very low-key.” (source: fashionologie.com)

Well oke, we know the wedding will be low-key, but don’t you think ‘including the Digitalistas’ means low-key? We think so…In the end Elisah Jacobs is still his cousin right? And we write more about him then anybody else so we expect an invitation. And if the mail deliverer puts a personal MJ note in our mailbox somewhere in 2010,  we want to be sure that we already have found the perfect dress!

Note: We  don’t think we  need to wear a dress of Marc himself, because on the day of his life he is not in the mood for ‘work’! So it’s not that we don’t like his dresses, because we absolutely adore all the things he makes!

THE PERFECT HOLIDAY DRESS?: RENT THE RUNWAY

I just received an invite in my inbox to try out Rent the Runway, the latest web site to take on the high fashion rental market. Remember Bag, Borrow, or Stealmade popular by Jennifer Hudson’s character in the Sex and the City movie? Well, it appears we’ve moved past renting accessories and on to renting a whole look. Need a dress-to-impress for that holiday party? Think of how amazing you will look in a Hervé Léger. Gorg. Here’s how it all breaks down.

The site offers a smattering of designers from Catherine Malandrino, Tracy Reese to Cavalli. Dress rentals run from $50 – $200 for a 4-day rental including the price to ship to your doorstep. That’s one-tenth of the typical cost.  While dresses come in sizes 0-10, this is high fashion. Not surprisingly, most are only available up to a size 8. They also allow another dress to be shipped to your house free of charge in a separate size when you rent from a new designer. Girl, you know how you like to lie about your size… These designers don’t front like Banana Republic trying to convince you that you actually weigh 10 pounds less! The site offers returns within 24 hours for any reason.

After rocking out the dress and impressing your friends with your style and apparent wallet-size, simply place the dress in a pre-paid envelope and return to RTR. Dry cleaning is included but damage insurance costs an additional $5 extra. If you happen to all-out destroy the dress (think Can’t By Me Love), you can either find a geek to go out with you or pay up for the entire cost of the dress.

The inventory currently includes 160 dresses and the founders claim that twenty thousand women have signed up on the site, which has only been shipping dresses for a week.  No men’s fashion for now boys.

So far, a few things seem to be critical to the site’s success.

Timeliness

In planning for a big event, if the dress doesn’t arrive on time, it could spell disaster.

Selection

No one wants to be rocking a Proenza Schouler from 3 collections back. Travesty.

Consumer Behavior

There’s a clear difference between sauntering around with a rented handbag on your arm vs. wearing a dress that many could have worn before you. Yes, we’ve all tried on clothes in fitting rooms. Have those clothes walked out of the fitting room, into a cab, gotten wasted at Spring Lounge at an after party and proceeded to eject the contents of the most recent Jack & Ginger on a street corner? I think not.

Business Model

The key is to rent each dress enough times that RTR can make back what they spent on each. Netflix only has to make back the cost of a DVD. A piece of designer threads costs substantially higher increasing the potential risk.

So far the service is invitation-only but we’re working on getting some invites for loyal readers. Check back later.

It remains to be seen if this model can prove successful but in the meantime, yes, this is a Christian Siriano. Glad you like it.
