Siapa yang tidak kenal dengan Bapak yang satu ini. Di kalangan murid-muridnya – Bapak yang bernama lengkap Zulkarnaini dan saat ini masih menjabat Kepala Sekolah di sebuah SMP di kawasan Jakarta Barat – lebih dikenal dengan panggilan Pak Zul.

Pak Zul menyelesaikan pendidkan S1 di IKIP Jakarta (sekarang UNJ), dan saat ini masih dalam tahap penyelesaian S2 di kampus yang sama. Suami Rita ini termasuk aktivis organisasi semasa masih mahasiswa dulu. Terutama sekali dalam organisasi mahasiswa Minang yang ada di Jakarta.

Berbekal pengalaman inilah, bersama dengan beberapa orang temannya dan didukung oleh tokoh-tokoh senior perantau Gaduik di Jabodetabek, Pak Zul merintis untuk menghidupkan kembali IWARGA Jabodetabek, setelah sekian lama vakum. 

Kita tunggu gebrakan Pak Zul dalam menggerakkan IWARGA, khususnya bidang pendidikan yang menjadi tanggung jawabnya.

On the evening of Nov. 11, 2009. The rest of the BostInnovation staff and I headed out to the Charles River Museum of Industry and Innovation to check out the nOOb companies and find out exactly what they have to offer.

What follows is a recap of the presenting startup companies and our collective opinions on a few of them:

Implementation Factory’s Praura
Praura presented in Mass Inno’s “pit”, and we were able to get in on that action. It’s a collaboration software currently offering free 30-day trials, and the presenter said it’s available for as little as $17 per month, which impressed us. They’re re-launching the service in January, and it sounds like they’ll be offering more to differentiate them from other online collaboration platforms. The plus, right now, is that they’re small and will work with you to design a space that fits your needs, rather than forcing you to figure out which of their applications will be most useful. They also don’t care how much file sharing space you need. They’re more interested in growing their user-base than preventing you from taking advantage of what they offer. In today’s world of virtual collaboration, one of these platforms is sure to emerge as a must-have for small companies. This one is probably worth checking out if your group needs one now.

The Risk-Wise Investor
The Risk-Wise Investor is a new book by Michael Carpenter aimed at helping entrepreneurs and investors analyze the risk they incur in an easy to understand, non technical way. The crowd seemed interested, but with so many people in attendance and just one person (presumably Carpenter himself?) fielding questions, we had trouble elbowing in to talk about the text. Also, we had nothing but lint in our pockets, so we weren’t looking to pick up a copy of the (fairly substantial) hardcover book. All the same, it piqued our collective curiosities. We’ll wait for a free giveaway to hit Twitter or Facebook before we drop the cash on it. (That’s a hint to Carpenter and his company, eh hem.)

Conversion Associates
Conversion Associates offers a top-down analytic platform for monitoring user engagement on your company’s websites and web advertising. Users put a snipit of Java code into their sites to see who visited, when, from where and what kind of engagement they made. In short, it looks like Google Analytics on steroids. The downside? You have to put the Java into all your web pages, and then you really need to monitor engagement at Conversion’s site to put it to work for you. However, if you’re looking to isolate which web properties are most useful to clients and potential clients, this might be something worth looking into. Also, the company can monitor, record and track calls placed through non-web advertising.

Textaurant
We tweeted about this company a week or so ago, and it really seems like a no-brainer to us. Rather than giving you one of those stupid buzzing coasters when you go to a restaurant and put your name in for a table, they simply take your cell phone number and send you an SMS text five minutes before your table’s ready. The system is fully automated, though matre de’s can manually operate it as well. As Mass High Tech reported last week, this new service will do its Alpha testing at Asgard Irish Pub in Central Square, Cambridge, on December 1st. Look for more on this company at this blog in the coming weeks. We’re definitely going to double back and see how they’re doing.

uTest
Imagine a massive, global network of bug squishers and professional-grade testers all at your beckon call. That’s what uTest offers. This Southboro, Mass., based company is in the business of making sure your site works well. They pay their testers on a conract basis, and even host a quarterly “Bug Off,” in which all of their users are invited to compete to find the biggest bugs on already-live sites like Walmart.com. Peter Shih, uTest’s community ambassador said, “We don’t have to find testers, usually. They find us. The Bug Off gives them a chance to outdo one another.” Very cool company.

TeenLife
During the Great Recession everyone on the BostInnovation staff has watched as a backslide put older, more experienced workers into entry-level positions. That means Gen-Y-ers are taking internships even after college is over. But what about all the teenagers usually vying for those internships? That’s where TeenLife comes in. TeenLife Boston is looking out for them. This site provides a resource for teenagers to find jobs and non-profit roles so they can build out their resumes as well. It’s never too early to start networking in the shrinking world of social media, and this site is definitely a good place to start.

I need to start this post with a Graphic Design Diva’s Hissy Fit. …I put a short profile and a photo up on PlentyOfFish.com and made a valiant attempt at trying to figure out how to “work” the site. I am exhausted, and I still haven’t completely figured out this place. Now the Pollyanna side of me is saying “You never know. Don’t judge a site by it’s navigation. Your soul mate may be lurking around on there somewhere. Chin up Girl!” And the Design Diva is screaming “BARF…GAG…it’s ugly here. GET OUT before the place permanently blinds you!” I just can’t get comfortable with this site.

First of all the photos are horrible…all of them. Seems when you upload a photo the site re-sizes your pix….but not proportionately. I’ve yet to see a man on there who doesn’t look like some variation of Mr. Potato Head. Now I’m sure most of these guys are actually normal to great-looking in real life. I’m also sure that the majority of them posted photos that are an accurate depiction of what they look like, but by the time these pix get posted on pof.com they have apparently gone through some kind of internet nuclear holocaust, causing them to become Mr. Potato-fied. I am actually afraid to look at the public view of my profile. I don’t want to know what happened to my head.

I did find a rating section on the site though. You can submit your headshot and have members rate you, from a 1 (Fish Again) to a 10 (Great Catch). Am I the only one who finds this too icky to bear? Needless to say I will not be submitting my headshot to this section. There’s also a discussion board, which I just haven’t had time to delve into, and just as well too because, let’s face it, I’m looking for a real-live date – not a discussion board buddy.

I’ve gotten a few emails from men on the site and not one of them is more than one sentence long. Actually most are just a word or two, like “Hi There” or “Va-Va-Voom” (do people really still use that expression??!!), or “Hey Hottie”. I have to be honest, I need more than that verbally. I like to know that the person I’m considering meeting can string a short series of sentences into a coherent message. Call me crazy, but I really do like that. I wonder if this penchant for the briefest possible message has something to do with the structure of the site? Maybe all these gentlemen are so mentally drained from trying to navigate the labyrinth that is PlentyOfFish that basic language skills have now escaped them.

I did briefly reply to a Mr. Potato Head from New York. He wrote “You seem very lovely, it’s a shame that we’re so far from one another”. His profile seemed intelligent and down-to-earth and, although he really is G.I. (geographically inappropriate) I decided to write back with, “Thanks for writing. I enjoyed your profile and I too think it’s too bad that we’re so far apart. I do have cousins who live out your way though. It’s a nice area.” He replied that he might mapquest where I lived and then he mentioned a town that’s about 50 miles south of me! So, I sent him a note telling him to set his mapquest sights to my actual home town….and….never heard back from him. Well, that’s the way it goes with online dating…sometimes they just disappear…onward and upward then.

For now I’m going to leave my profile up on PlentyOfFish…Polyanna usually wins with me. It’s free so it couldn’t hurt, right? In the meantime, I’m open to suggestions for other likely sites. Let me know if you run across an interesting one.

What do you like the best about your internship:

The American Red Cross is an international humanitarian organization that provides relief to disaster victims in addition to helping people to prepare, prevent and respond to emergencies. It is nice to work for an organization that is doing good things to help the global community every day. I like that I work in an environment where people value my input and ideas and allow me the creative freedom to explore those ideas.

What do you find most challenging about your internship:

I think the most challenging part of my internship is deciding where to focus the majority of my time and energy. There are so many projects at my fingertips that it’s sometimes hard to prioritize!

What is one piece of advice you might give someone looking to participate in the SX program:

Get involved in as much as you can as soon as you can! There are so many opportunities available on campus to help further your education; unfortunately I didn’t learn about many of them until my junior year. Getting involved with programs such as PRSSA and AHPR is a great way to help build your portfolio and gain real world experience in public relations. It is also a fantastic opportunity to network and make connections with students and professionals who are full of valuable information on topics ranging from what you can expect upon entering the job market to what you should be doing now to help set you apart from the pack.

What is something new you have learned as a result of your SX internship:

Although I’ve been trained to develop public relations content in a certain academic way, there really isn’t a cut and dry way to present information. As long as your message is consistent, relevant, important and timely to the audience you are trying to reach; there is more than one way to write effectively.

How do you think your internship has better prepared you to enter the professional world:

My internship at the Red Cross has allowed me to explore the non-profit world more in-depth and have a better understanding of how social media can aid an organization in building and maintaining relationships with members of its current and potential support base.

What is one thing you wish you would have known before starting your SX internship:

I wish I would have known that you should always have a Plan B. The real world is a roller coaster and it’s inevitable that things you had counted on happening will occasionally fall through. One should always be prepared and have an alternate plan in place so you don’t waste time figuring out how to react.

How do you believe social media has or will change your industry:

Social media has made it possible for you to ask the world a question and receive an answer. Before social media, there was no way that we could maintain and build deeper relationships with hundreds (in some cases thousands or millions) of people. In terms of public relations, it has changed the industry from primarily a one-way form of communication to two-way. Instead of just talking at our audience, we can now communicate more effectively and quickly to better understand their wants and needs.

He’s the modern day story of Hercules, if you think about it. Taylor Lautner, now 17,  went from a little boy who showcased his love of martial arts as Sharkboy in The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl in 3-D at 14, to packing on about 30 pounds of muscle to play and keep the role of Jacob (the director of Twilight’s sequel, New Moon, considered replacing Lautner with a different actor in the second film) in the hit teen vampire franchise, Twilight.

As the world continues to watch at Taylor’s growing body (mainly the love-sick teeny boppers), most, if not all of us, are wondering, “How in the hell did he do that?”

Men’s Health magazine spoke with Taylor’s trainer Jordan Yam to get a sneak peak of Taylor’s workout regimen. Here’s an excerpt of the interview:

Taylor Lautner isn’t a naturally strong guy, but his career depends on becoming brawny. Between the first and second Twilight films, his character grew into a powerful werewolf. That meant he needed to gain 30 pounds of muscle in a year. Which he did.

Think about that: Taylor Lautner used to be a 5′10″, 140-pound, bony teenager, and now he’s a rippled fitness animal. If he can overcome physical shortcomings, anyone can. “Inexperience works to your advantage,” says Jordan Yuam, Lautner’s trainer and the owner of Jordan’s Virtual Fit Club. “The less muscle you have, the easier it is to gain muscle mass more quickly.”

Your strategy: Eat right and follow a smart, strategic workout regimen. “Maximize your genetic potential,” says Yuam. “There’s no reason you can’t gain pounds of muscle in a year.”

Lautner is counting on it: The third movie in the Twilight series is due out in mid-2010. “My character continues to grow,” he says, “so I’d like to pack on at least a few more lean pounds.”

CNN’s Anderson Cooper will be host of “CNN Heroes: An All-Star Tribute.”

CNN Heroes: An All-Star Tribute” returns to the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood on Thanksgiving night, as the network celebrates its third year of honoring everyday people making a difference.

CNN’s Anderson Cooper hosts the star-studded gala, which will be seen around the world on November 26 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on the global networks of CNN.

 

The telecast shines a spotlight on the extraordinary accomplishments of the Top 10 CNN Heroes, who were selected by a distinguished Blue Ribbon Panel. Each of this year’s honorees will receive $25,000 in recognition of their work.

The show culminates with the announcement of the 2009 CNN Hero of the Year, who will receive an additional $100,000. Voting to select the Hero of the Year is being conducted through an online poll at CNN.com/Heroes, ending November 19 (6 a.m. ET)

Performers and presenters scheduled to appear at this year’s tribute show will be announced in the coming weeks.

Last year’s show included appearances by Hugh Jackman, Salma Hayek, Cameron Diaz, Forest Whitaker, Meg Ryan, Terrence Howard, Jessica Biel, Kate Beckinsale and Lucy Liu, with performances by Christina Aguilera, Alicia Keys and John Legend.

Since February, profiles of 2009 CNN Heroes have been airing weekly on air and online, each chosen from nominations submitted through the CNN Heroes Web site. This year, more than 9,000 nominations were received, more than twice the number of nominations submitted in 2008.

This record number of nominations is further evidence of the momentum CNN Heroes has built in just a few short years,” said Jim Walton, president of CNN Worldwide.

“Viewers have been engaged by these stories of inspiration and accomplishment beyond our expectations. It is truly an honor to be able to introduce the CNN Heroes to our global audience every year.”

Again this year, producer/director Joel Gallen will serve as executive producer of “CNN Heroes: An All-Star Tribute.” Among his credits, Gallen produced telethon events supporting victims of the September 11 terrorist attacks and Hurricane Katrina, winning an Emmy Award and a Peabody Award for “America: A Tribute to Heroes.”

The Kodak Theatre is best known as the first permanent home of the Academy Awards.
