CorelDRAW had its 20th anniversary just recently. If a software can stand for 20 years it couldn’t be that bad, right? But yes, it looks awkward and many people simply ignore it, since it is not “cool” enough. Its designer community isn’t large and the software itself has some disadvantages, which make it look a bit awkward. Let’s reviews some advantages and disadvantages of using this software.

Introduction

Why is that only people already addicted to CorelDRAW use it? Maybe they know something we don’t. In this article, I’ll review some of the issues with CorelDRAW. I think the developers of this software have created a sharp program, but not so user friendly.

CorelDRAW is very precise and reliable. All the tools give maximum control, but you must fight your way through to learn them. It’s definitely not the software that you can take for a quick spin and easily create great artwork.

The good news is that when you get used to its feature set, it becomes part of your thinking and can be a strong tool for creating astounding artwork. Let’s review a few pros and cons of CorelDRAW.

Er…How Do I Navigate?

First of all forget about the Space Bar equals Pan thesis. CorelDRAW has a navigator board but I must admit it’s not the real thing and most people don’t even know where it is (small box at the lower-right corner of the interface).

The easiest way to navigate is to zoom in and out to the pointer area with your mouse. This can be tricky sometimes if your mouse isn’t smooth enough. Sounds strange but once accustomed to this navigation technique you will get addicted to it. If you still feel lost grab the Hand Tool (H) to pan, and press spacebar to change back to the previous tool.

What About Freehand Brushes?

This is a real pain. CorelDraw’s freehand tools are only a concept but are nearly impossible to use them. Just try to do a quick hatching with the the freehand tool. You will end up with a mess, since you will continuously select the previously drawn lines.

It’s OK though, as this is not primarily freehand painting or sketching software. There are some other industry standard tools on the Corel palette (for example Painter) which excel in this field. But once again this is a week point since the core concept of the software is not to painting.

The World’s Best and Easiest Curves/Nodes Management

When you get down to the details you will be amazed how easy is to use the bezier tool and how precise its curve management is. If you are after vectorization then Corel Draw is great. Corel Draw is excellent software when it comes to vector tools. You have all the control over the nodes and curves with mathematical precision.

The right-click context menu makes vectorization so precise that technical illustration is easy to create. I take a deep bow in front of the team who developed this. This part is the strength of CorelDRAW from the dawn of vector software.

Super Fine Gradient Mesh

You need photo-realistic vectors? Just grab the super easy gradient mesh tool and you will make unbelievable vector portraits in no time. The Corel company has bundled photo-realistic art already in the version 8 clip art, and don’t forget the Hedy Lamar illustration on the cover of version 8. If you check the Corel community galleries you will find some gorgeous photo-realistic portraits, though the galleries are sometimes awkward and the community isn’t very exciting.

Highly Controllable Boolean Operations

I simply love this part of CorelDRAW. When you need to cut, weld, trim or intersect just open up the shaping docker and you have maximum control over the Boolean operations and the resulting shapes. Actually, you can base your style on these fine set of tools. Check them out for yourself.

Strange and Useful Effects

The effect palette is also a strength of CorelDRAW. I use these tools most of the time, especially the contour tool. Try some of this for extra options.

Color Separation and Prepress Goodness

If you’re working in the DTP business, CorelDRAW is your humble servant. It corrects your mistakes silently and makes color separation and prepress work as easy as it can be. The main concept of this software, the precision, has its word in the printing menu.

Screen Refreshing

If you want to spare yourself from getting upset, then don’t forget to press Command + W often to refresh the screen. CorelDRAW tends to forget to do this for you, which can be quite annoying sometimes.

Trace!

CorelDRAW has top notch tracing software integrated. It is quick, highly-customizable, and precise. Even if you don’t like other parts of the software, trying Corel Draw’s trace is a must. As a plus they have included a font recognition routine in the X4 version, which uses What the font! to find out what font was used on your scan. Nice idea!

Conclusion

CorelDRAW can be awkward, especially to new users, but powerful in the hands of a seasoned user. You must decide the right vector software for you.

If you are a fan of South Park, choose Corel Draw because all the characters, scenery, and props are drawn using this vector package, as wikipedia states.

Thunar is the default file manager for Xubuntu’s Xfce desktop environment, and is as stable in Ubuntu as the default app, Nautilus (especially since Xfce uses a lot from Gnome anyway). In many ways, you can’t tell the two programs apart, but for a time Thunar was way ahead of Gnome’s file manager. That’s not just because of advanced features like custom actions you could add, but because of the various views you could have. For example, for newbies tentatively moving away from Windows, the Tree view in the side pane is assuringly similar to Windows Explorer.

While Nautilus has certainly caught up, with being able to add to context menus via actions, and 6 different views for the side pane, Thunar is still worth installing because you can get the best of both worlds. You can leave Nautilus with the Places pane on the left and “Icon View” (thumbnails) on the right, and for when you want to browse via a Tree pane with “Compact List” icons (“List View” in Windows Explorer), you can open Thunar.

Also, unlike with Nautilus, you can still access the defined shortcuts (usually available via the left pane) while in Tree view by clicking a button at the end of the address bar. If you are thinking Thunar might be good to have as a backup in case Nautilus is having problems (which it is), but prefer it to look like Nautilus, then you can always change things back to how you like them (change the Tree pane to Shortcuts).

If you like this idea, but are thinking the icons in “Compact List” view are too small, you can always make them bigger (seen above), via the View menu, or zoom with your scroll wheel.

If you look at the pics, you’ll see some minor differences between the two file managers. Firstly, while Thunar uses the same icons for toolbar buttons that Nautilus does (they both get them from the current icon theme), Thunar’s are bigger (which I personally like). You’ll also note from the second pic that in your home folder (and elsewhere), hidden folders and files are listed first.

Other things worth mentioning are the differences between thumbnails and folder settings between the two, and that the Thunar context (right-click) menu will probably have less entries than you’re used to (though you should get “Open Terminal Here“ by default, while with Nautilus you have to install a package to get “Open in Terminal“).

Lastly, since the Information pane in Nautilus is rather useless right now when it comes to info, you can use Thunar to get more info at a glance than Nautilus can offer. For example, when you’re in your ~/Pictures folder and what to know the size in pixels of certain images, you generally need to right-click each file and view the info via Properties > Image. But with Thunar, all you have to do is click each file and look at the bottom to the info displayed on the status bar (which can be enabled via the View menu if it is missing).

So you could even do what I did: set up Thunar to display over-sized icons in “Icons” view, and then create a panel launcher to have your ~/Pictures folder open in Thunar (the command for such a launcher would be: thunar /home/yourusername/Pictures). That way, you don’t have to mess with icon size in Nautilus, but still get really large thumbnails of all your pictures, as well as info on dimensions presented in the status bar.

Tycka vad man vill om saken, vi är oundvikligen och obönhörligen på väg dit. Mot julen alltså. Redan till helgen är det första advent och sen rasar det på med julmarknader, luciafiranden, glöggkvällar och hipp som happ så är det kvällen före julafton och man har inte hunnit hälften av vad man tänkt.

Julens närmande märks även här på biblioteket. Redan före helgen började vi så smått tömma magasinets hyllor på julpysselböcker och julskivor och under veckan kommer vi sakta men säkert utöka julhyllan med bilderböcker och julberättelser.

Vi har också ett speciellt julprogram (kolla bibliotekets kalender) för de sista veckorna innan jul. Det blir julsagor och julsånger på våra vanliga sång- och sagotider och vi kommer ha inte mindre än två julteatrar, Tomtesäcken som försvann den 12:e och Tomten som inte tyckte om gröt den 16:e december.

*Sigh* I really need to stop watching old movies…

So, I thought it was going to be a crazy, crazy week, but it was only crazy for two days and then tapered off.  Like it should.  Monday was the Mystery night program and I thought it went only ok.  I’m sure other people will tell you different since I had over 30 people show up.  While a lot of the kids enjoyed the program and worked as a team, I had a few who either didn’t understand the concept fully, didn’t care, and goofed off.  I got pretty livid, which surprised the hell out of me when I kind of snapped at two youngsters in my group.  I also had someone complain that they felt that because the mystery night involved MURDER, it was not appropriate for his/her children.  *headdesk*  I politely told this person that I had advertised the program as a murder mystery.  Later, I talked to my supervisor and she agreed with me, plus she reminded me that we had talked about the appropriateness of the program (because I was nervous), and decided that since the murder had taken place five years into the past, and there was no body, it would be ok.  In no way was the murder mystery inappropriate to 7-12 year olds.  But then again, I’m not a mother.  I have to remind myself that I can’t make everyone happy.

The puppet play went over pretty well, my favorite being the play that our young adult librarian wrote, The VERY, VERY First Thanksgiving.  When I say first Thanksgiving, I mean it involved dinosaurs.  Hilarious.  The kids came up with some good ideas for our Christmas puppet plays (Funny Night Before Christmas, Goldilocks and the Three Elves, and Reindeer Tryouts).  I already wrote an amusing take on the Night Before Christmas.  It involves a very frustrated narrator who keeps getting interrupted by different characters.  Here’s a snippet:

Narrator: With a little old driver so lively and quick, I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick…

Santa: I WANT MILK AND COOKIES!!!

Narrator: I said ‘lively and quick,’ not fat and lazy!

Santa: Now, Oreo!  Now, Tollhouse!  Now, Nabisco and Nestle!

Narrator: No!  No!  No!

Well, I thought it was vaguely amusing.

My family got their webcam, so we were all able to talk face to face!!!  That’s pretty exciting, except for the fact that I always get this feeling that I need to look somewhat presentable when we talk…

I went out to dinner and shopping with a friend on Friday, that was very nice.  I had sushi… well fake sushi.  You know, not raw fish, but crab and shrimp.  What can I say?  I’m not that adventurous.  We both had a nice time.

This week should be nice and short, but Wednesday will be fun.  I have story time at 10:30 (I got a little *warmandfuzzy* after a bunch of moms were adamant that I would be doing story time), showing a movie for all the kids that are out of school at 11:30 (Meet the Robinsons), and then going to an adult ‘daycare’ center to tell them my Anansi story and do a craft.

I have to get it out of the way.  I.  Am.  A.  Hypocrite.  I blatantly mock the Twilight franchise and tell everyone how much I detest the books… but I’m going to see the New Moon tomorrow with fellow librarians.  Don’t worry, I will bring something sharp to jab at my eyes.  Yes, please throw rocks me.

Also, happy news!  I get to do Thanksgiving twice this year (once on Thursday and once on Friday).  Before I go any further, I have to thank the tons and tons of people who keep inviting me to their house or their family’s house.  Very sweet.  I have this sinking feeling that someone will have to roll me to work because I will have blown up like a balloon ala Violet Beauregard.  Tons of wonderful food, and I get to contribute with Pumpkin Cheesecake and Chocolate Chunk Toffee cookies!

God, I do go on.  One more thing, I promise.  I’m excited for Secret Santa and our Christmas party.  I need to do a quick poll.  So if you could either do the poll thingy or leave comments below, I’d appreciate!

Countdown to Cleveland: 30 days

Det är intressant att läsa att det är så många som verkligen följer det där programmet. Har själv aldrig riktigt fastnat för det. Kommer ihåg när man var mindre och alla dessa olika program hoppade fram med vinster och man var tvungen att ringa in. När man väl gjorde det så kom man aldrig fram, och nu har jag nog fått svaret.

Enligt Aftonbladet, så brukar TV4 “mörklägga” vinnarsiffrorna från Postkodlotteriet. Nämligen är det så att det är proffsspelare som tar över samtalen och haffar in otroliga vinster. Samma människor har vunnit upp till 10 ggr.

Det svenska folket är arga, vilket är förståligt. Å andra sidan ringer dessa “proffs” in för sjuka summor varje gång och de kämpar för att få in vinsten. Det må vara orättvist, men de jobbar för sin vinst. Det orättvisa är väl att alla inte har chansen att spendera tusentals kronor för att ringa in. Kommer själv ihå att det var ett eller ett par samtal man kunde ringa in och sen blev det för dyrt. Tyvärr ser det illa ut, men åter, dessa människor gör allt och har möjligheten att försöka mycket mer än vi andra, vi vanliga människor.

Tym razem postanowiłem podzielić się z Wami moimi spostrzeżeniami, które dotyczą dość popularnego programu “Mam Talent”. Z reguły jakoś nie oglądam telewizji, jednak dziś wyjątkowo zobaczyłem jeden z odcinków na TVN’ie.

Czego tym razem się czepiam? A no rozpatrzmy to, jacy ludzie się tam pojawiają. Pojawiają się tam osoby, które rzeczywiście mają coś do pokazania, ale także znajdą się osoby, których być tam nie powinno. O kim mowa? Chodzi mi o ludzi śpiewających. Po co mi kolejna kopia Idola? Rozumiem, że ok, można śpiewać, nawet bardzo dobrze, jednak tego jest już za dużo, to oklepany schemat

Czepiam się tego, że moim zdaniem, cały ten program nie jest przeznaczony dla “śpiewaków”. Dla wokalistów jest wiele innych programów rozrywkowych. A tak naprawdę, osób, które ładnie śpiewają, jest cała masa, i wiele z nich byłoby w stanie wygryźć aktualne gwiazdy. Program “Mam Talent” powinien przedstawiać wszystko to co do tej pory, tylko bez piosenek. Nie po to ogląda się ten program, by znów słuchać “jak oni śpiewają”.

Uff, to tyle na dziś

Tak na marginesie, oglądając dziś jedną dobrą śpiewaczkę w “MT”, zauważyłem, że do półfinału czy też finału często wokaliści wybierają piosenki z serii “wyciskacze łez” co jest po prostu smętne i chyba ma na celu tylko wzruszyć jury oraz publikę, by oddawać ewentualne głosy.
