Como parte de esta onda blackerona y oscura por la que estamos pasando acá en el blog, qué mejor forma de casi rematar la semana que con un enorme disco de una enorme banda proveniente de Suecia. Acá está Opeth con su death metal progresivo y su directo The Roundhouse Tapes.

Este disco, grabado hace ya tres años fue el pináculo de la gira promocionando Ghost Reveries, un disco de magníficas y épicas proporciones, muy bueno y que además estuvo entre los mejores álbumes de metal del mundo cuando salió a la luz pública.

Acá Mikael Åkerfeldt y compañía se lucen como  sólo ellos saben hacerlo sobre el escenario ante una audiencia que coreó de forma intensa lo mismo que la abridora y no tan nueva When que Blackwater Park, Demon of the Fall o Ghost Reveries.

Sin más acá les dejo este gran concierto, son sólo nueve canciones, pero cuando vean lo que duran –si es que no conocen aún a Opeth- sabrán el porqué: una excelente amalgama de Black metal melódico, death metal europeo y metal progresivo y jazzístico muy técnico pero con grandes cantidades de sentimientos de angustia, oscuridad y una espesa tranquilidad.

Ni la piense, está de diez, son dos partes, la primera de este lado y la segunda por acá.

Now I’ve stated somewhere around this blog before that my tastes are most firmly rooted in metal and progressive music. I love metal music; I love progressive music. What I love even more is progressive metal music done well. That is why whenever you see me listing my top favorite bands, Opeth and Dream Theater are usually in my top two, and the likes of Meshuggah and Tool in my top 5. I have a strange affinity for heavy, dark and epic music. You get heavy in metal, dark in most metal and some progressive, and lots of epic in progressive and some metal. In addition, in metal you get lots of intricate and technical musicianship, as well as a raw intensity you just don’t really find in other genres. In progressive music (nowadays), you get even more technical (albeit not necessarily intricate) musicianship, innovation, and a sense of discovery and wonder built into the arrangements and composition.

Despite my being in utter love with progressive metal, I gave up on finding too much music in the area. There’s good metal, there’s good progressive, but nine out of ten progressive metal bands are complete shit. They plug the progressive tag into their music by adding in some keyboards, half-assed “orchestra” or “classical” arrangements, lots of fast-played scales, dissonant chords, clean vocals, and seven to eight minute songs. I’m sorry, but that doesn’t cut it.

Progressive is a pretentious term intrinsically; there’s no escaping that, I suppose. But if you’re going to label your music with a pretentious tag, at least be able to back that up. You need to write music that makes sense. It doesn’t need to be technical–it needs to be smart. It needs to be mature. It needs to instill that feeling that you’re listening to something interesting and fresh (without needing to actually be fresh). Experiment, be daring and adventurous in your music, for god’s sake. When you start writing and playing technical music for technicality’s sake, you get today’s Yngwie Malsteem, and we all know how that turned out (in case you don’t know, he’s washed up now; even Mikael Åkerfeldt of Opeth agrees with me: Read his blog on Yngwie Malsteem).

This is where Cynic comes in. I went on a spree recently, getting all sorts of new music; mostly doom, death/doom, and some old progressive and progressive metal music. I was suggested Cynic as well when I was searching through progressive metal stuffs. I had heard of them when they supported Meshuggah on one of their past tours, and being from the Tampa Bay, Florida area, I had previously brushed them off as another run of the mill death metal band. This time I took them a bit more seriously and actually took a good listen to one of their albums.

Let me sum up the impression this album left on me after I’d finished listening through it in as few words as I can: “Holy fucking shit”. Now let me elaborate. This is an absolutely amazing album. It is one of the best metal albums I have ever heard. It is fun to listen to, it is refreshing, and it is unpredictable. Most impressive is the way the entire album comes together. Throughout your listen, nothing ever feels out of place, and the concept is delivered flawlessly. I’m not the biggest fan of innovation/new things. I prefer a solid and well-written album to one that goes out of its way to be “new” and “innovative”.

Traced in Air, however, innovates and tries new things without messing it up. It is an absolute wonder of an album. From the get go, you’re drawn in with a fast intro track that builds up tension with each passage. By the end, you’re on the edge of your seat before it abruptly tapers off and leads into the next track. From there, you’re on a journey. It pulls you through measure after measure of fast paced and heavy melodies. It is heavy in its intensity, not its speed or its tone. The musicianship is perfect. Cynic does not add in extra notes where they’re not needed. The guitars are intricate and balanced (Paul Masvidal, Tymon Kruidenier). You can actually hear the bass (Robin Zielhorst, Sean Malone). The drum work is perfectly fitting yet has a manic personality of its own (Sean Reinert). Traced in Air grabs a hold of you and doesn’t let you go until you reach the end.

Perhaps the most interesting part of this album is the vocal work. It predominantly uses clean vocals fed through a synthesizer of some kind. It gives the vocalist (Paul Masvidal) a robotic and sort of inhuman feel. While generally when the vocals do appear, they still hold the leading melody, this effect really brings the instruments to the forefront. The vocals become another instrument in the band that only happens to narrate, and you are more easily able to focus on the music as a whole.

The perhaps weakest part of the album are the death growls added in now and then to back up the clean vocals. They simply are not that strong. Handled by guitarist Tymon Kruidenier, they lack any real impact or punch. However, they appear very sparsely on the album, and they never have a leading role, so I suppose it is forgivable.

In any case, Traced in Air is an absolute treat for the fan of progressive music, metal music, and progressive metal music. I absolutely did not expect to find a band of this quality ever in my lifetime; especially one that goes in such an unexpected direction such as this. I cannot recommend this album enough. It is beautiful, it is engaging, it is absolutely engrossing.

Cynic produces a sound not easily described in detail, but can be easily summarized in the album’s title. It has an esoteric and transcendental feel to it. The songs flow seamlessly from one to the next, taking you with them to some place unknown, but somewhere you know you want to be. The songs truly do feel like they were Traced in Air.

Bilocate to młody zespół rodem z Jordanii reprezentujący gatunek nazywany progresywnym death metalem. Sudden Death Syndrome jest ich drugim albumem w karierze. Grupa przyznaje się do inspiracji dokonaniami takich kapel jak Opeth, Bloodbath, Anathema czy My Dying Bride. Chociaż zespół jak dotąd nie zdobył znaczącej popularności, potrafi już pokazać wiele, a nad ich muzyką warto zatrzymać się na dłuższą chwilę.

Album rozpoczyna się krótkim, bardzo klimatycznym wstępem. Wprowadza on w klimat płyty i stanowi jednocześnie intro do drugiej, bardzo rozbudowanej kompozycji – trwającego 17 minut i dwie sekundy Blooded Forest. Panowie z Bilocate zaczynają konkretnie – wita nas głęboki growl, zdecydowana perkusja i gitary o ciężkim brzmieniu. Pojawiają się chwiejne ozdobniki dodające muzyce specyficznego charakteru. Po chwili mamy pierwszą zmianę – zespół płynnie wchodzi w zupełnie inne metrum i tempo, logicznie rozwijając gitarowy motyw. Frazy nie są powtarzane zbyt często – nie ma nudy i zastoju, na które często chorują zespoły bawiące się w progresję. Krótkie wyciszenie z fortepianem i znów nagła zmiana, niemal wściekły wybuch głęboko brzmiących gitar. Jeszcze przed piątą minutą następuje kolejne wyciszenie i od tego momentu istotne stają się szczegóły. Gitara powtarza kilka nut, ale szybko schodzi na dalszy plan. Perkusista odgrywa główną rolę, poza nim słyszymy niepokojące dźwięki i nie dającego o sobie zapomnieć wokalistę. Cały fragment budzi silne skojarzenia z Under the Weeping Moon Opeth i nie jest to jedyna inspiracja muzyką Szwedów na tym krążku, o czym najlepiej świadczyć mogą niezliczone kontrasty i gwałtowne zmiany w najdłuższej kompozycji, jak i w pozostałych. Zespół na chwilę wraca do wcześniej prezentowanego motywu, by znów dać się porwać szalonym podróżom w niezbadane jeszcze tereny. Muzyka jest mroczna i ciężka, jej klimat ma gęstość smoły, lecz nie brakuje w tym wszystkim miejsca na momenty bardziej przejrzyste, przejścia opierające się na krystalicznie czystych dźwiękach fortepianu, czy gitarowe solo znacznie wykraczające poza stylistykę deathmetalową. Pomimo tak wielu rzeczy do powiedzenia i takiej zmienności, podczas odsłuchu nie ma się wrażenia pośpiechu i niecierpliwości – każdy motyw jest pokazany w odpowiednim tempie, muzyce nie brakuje przestrzeni, przez co jest ona bardziej wiarygodna, lepiej trafia do słuchacza. Monumentalne riffy i głęboki growl przemieszane z wyciszeniami, a nawet elementami recytacji są zgrane w spójną całość.

The Dead Sea rozpoczyna się szybkimi fortepianowymi pasażami przekładanymi wejściami całego zespołu. Perkusista świetnie radzi sobie z połamanymi partiami, znów nie brakuje przestrzeni, rozmachu i kontrastów, a także ciężkich wstawek opartych na mięsistym basie. Utwór zamyka początkowy motyw. Ebtehal to dziewięcioipółminutowa ballada. Zaczyna się spokojnie – przejrzyste gitary, trójdzielne metrum, potem recytacja wokalisty. Ponad dziewięć minut to jednak bardzo wiele czasu i zespół wie jak je zagospodarować. Przez chwilę, niczym zapowiedź tego, co ma się dopiero zdarzyć robi się trochę głośniej, by nagle muzyka ograniczyła się do samej gitary [znów bardzo mocno kojarzy mi się ona z muzyką Opeth]. Potem żegnamy się z trójdzielnym metrum i muzyka robi się ciężka. Nie ma tu szalonego tempa, zaś w growlu można doszukiwać się więcej emocji. Utwór zamyka duet fortepianu i cichnącej gitary.

Inoculate pod względem pomysłowości można by było uznać za słabszy od swoich poprzedników, jednak ratuje go świetny dialog gitary i arabskiego instrumentu zwanego Oud. Myślę, że zdecydowanie lepiej wypadłby jako część większej całości, samodzielnie brakuje mu czegoś, co pozwoliłoby utrzymać ciągłą uwagę słuchacza.

Pure Wicked Sins to kolejny spokojny utwór. Powolne, ciężkie partie poprzerywane są tu fragmentami cichymi złożonymi z fortepianowych partii, recytacji i growlu. Napięcie ciągle rośnie, by osiągnąć apogeum około piątej minuty. Następuje wyciszenie, na chwilę wraca recytacja, by szybko ustąpić miejsca krótkiej, pięknej solówce gitary z akompaniamentem fortepianu.

Ostatni utwór – The Stone of Hate – to instrumentalne wyciszenie. Cichą melodię prowadzą skrzypce, tło stanowi gra arabskich instrumentów. Na sam koniec pojawia się fortepian, który z pozoru kończy utwór, ale pozostawia nastrój niepewności i zawiesza muzykę, tak, jakby po niej coś miało jeszcze nastąpić.

Bilocate mają jeszcze przed sobą karierę i jeśli ich muzyka utrzyma poziom, jaki reprezentuje na Sudden Death Syndrome, można śmiało zaryzykować, że zespół osiągnie bardzo wiele. Ich muzyka zaciekawia, absorbuje uwagę i, co najważniejsze, sprawia przyjemność. Cechuje się przy tym zaskakującą dojrzałością. Po wielokrotnym przesłuchaniu płyta nie straciła dla mnie magii, a wręcz przeciwnie – jej nastrój za każdym razem udziela mi się intensywniej, a szczegóły, te drobiazgi, których na początku nie sposób zauważyć, wzbogacają ją i pozwalają na ciągłe odkrywanie tej płyty na nowo. I choć zdarzają się momenty odrobinę słabsze, to jednak album utrzymuje wysoki poziom i daje nadzieję, że następne dzieło Bilocate będzie kolejną muzyczną ucztą, zaś za kilka lat będzie ich można wymieniać w jednym rzędzie z zespołami, z których teraz czerpią inspirację.

Lullabies for the Dormant Mind is the sophomore release from Century Media metalcore band The Agonist. It’s quite clear from their sound that they hail from Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The album was released February 23 in Europe and March 10 in North America by Century Media Records.

Given that their vocalist, Alyssa White-Gluz was a contestant on Canaian Idol (like American Idol for Canada, for those who don’t get it), this band has some pretty intense screams and subject matter – on this release particularly. After Only Once Imagined I did not have very high hopes for this band. They were boring and unoriginal metalcore and had very one-dimensional vocals. The only appeal was that the singer was a chick, and a hot one at that (still the only reason I think Lacuna Coil has fans). As you can imagine, a fiery personality such as Alyssa would want to avoid this, and make sure that people know she has chops. She made herself quite clear throughout Lullabies for the Dormant Mind, and brought more of an arsenal than last time. Many of the songs are more progressive death metal, and black metal sounding than the tired metalcore sound they had last time. This is not, however, to say that the approach they have taken has changed all that much. It is still quite clearly the same band.

The first, and most noticeable difference is aforementioned style change, but is not the most noteworthy. The biggest turn off from The Agonist for me was the lack of good songwriting. They had a pleasing sound, and were decent to listen to, but far too predictable. They seemed to have thrown out whatever formula they had been using, and simply went for it this time around.

While not groundbreaking, Lullabies for the Dormant Mind is at the very least fresh and interesting. The biggest barrier for this band, however, seems to be a lack of creativity in the guitar section, as well as the constant over-production. There are so many unnecessary string arrangements laid over the tracks, the most glaringly obvious being in the second track of the album, “…and Their Eulogies Sang Me to Sleep”. Ironically enough, this is the song that most exemplifies how the band really can come together and make some seriously brutal metal (each half of the song is almost entirely different from the other).

The other notable point of the album that I cannot forego mentioning is the a cappella version of Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake. There is obviously a fair amount of studio magic on the track, and I am not very sure how much of it that Alyssa actually sang, but it came out perfectly. All the harmonies were spot-on, and it sits in just the right spot on the album. Whomever made the call to allow this on the album made a great one.

Given the fact that this is their sophomore release, it’s a good (but not great) one. They have avoided their sophomore slump, and have made great strides toward writing a seriously awesome metal album. If they continue to evolve and refine their sound, they will be unstoppable in a couple years.

Opeth - Watershed Album Cover

It seems that every album that Opeth makes is nearly flawless, and Watershed is no exception, by far. It seems that this band can still make astounding music, while keeping their material fresh, but still true to their roots. Mikael’s deep, bestial growl is still as brutal as ever – and his singing voice as tranquil and beautiful.

The album starts off with a beautiful, easy-going song – Coil. The shortest track on the album, but also the most pastoral, features something new to Opeth – a female vocalist accompanying them. With a voice almost as haunting as Mikael’s, this track is amazingly relaxing and wonderful to listen to. The rest of the album isn’t as serene as Coil is, but is still amazingly well done. For example, the next track, Heir Apparent, (which happens to be my favorite track so far) starts off with a melancholic, slow moving intro, but then moves into a blisteringly fast guitar riff that essentially explodes in your face. This is what I love about Opeth, and Watershed – the way they can mix tranquility and brutality, even in one song.

Overall, Watershed will make an amazing addition to your Opeth collection if you haven’t bought/downloaded allready. It has the same feel as earlier albums, but still adds new things along the way, keeping the material fresh and exciting to listen to. I’ll be damned if the day will ever come when Opeth makes a bad album. I don’t think it is possible.

Overall Score : 9.0/10 – Another wonderful album, nothing less I would expect from Opeth.
