46. Progressive — Germ Destroyers

Alright, this directive is definitely tripping me up a bit, but I’m not going to let it hinder my progress. (BUH DUM TSSS) Okay, seriously. So when I think of progressive or progress I think of making it to the next step or level. For my nerdy self, this means progressing to the next level of a video game. That feeling of making it through one level, having that congratulatory screen that said you made it, and making it forward to the next level that is even harder is such a rewarding feeling. So I thought of video games and how they always have some kind of bad guy(s) that you as the player are supposed to get rid of or stop. Well, if Kleenex had a video game, I’m pretty sure they would be trying to stop or destroy germ spreading. Thus I made a little screen shot of the video game I thought Kleenex would make. This is the Level Up screen after you finish a level in “Germ Destroyers” by Kleenex.

The object of the game would be to use a tissue box and launch tissues to cover up and destroy the germs before they can reach the innocent noses you are sworn to protect. You are given a certain amount of time before you make it to the next level where you can get Kleenex upgrades like Multi-Tissue(fires three tissues), Cooling Relief tissue (that freeze germs), Anti Bac Tissue (that explode), and Ultra Soft tissue (that does more damage). I would love to see this game come out, perhaps on the Kleenex website, or maybe on that Kleenex smartphone app I thought of in my previous post. Either way, it would be a great way to liven up their image, attract more children, educate children on germs, and entertain thousands! What a way to progress into the future. ;D

46. Social — Kleenex Emotes

These are my little hand made emotes for Kleenex! Whenever I think of being social, I not only think of physical social interactions, but also online ones. We all spend a lot of time on line in some fashion, mostly social networks, and on these sites we are constantly interacting socially. When we do this, a lot of people like to put in emoticons (or text smiley faces) to make sure the other person knows which emotion we are displaying, since they can’t see us. I’m one of those people. I spend a lot of time chatting on the web with my friends and I used TONS of emoticons because there’s always some sort of missed communication due to no emotions being visible. So in the spirit of this online social idea, I thought it would be a great idea for me to make some emoticons myself. I’ve never made them before, and I will say it was super challenging. I wanted to make a good 10 or so of them, but these alone took me like an hour and a half. I had to hand make each little aspect of these guys in Photoshop. But these are my little Kleenex-icons! They really relate to the Kleenex brand because Kleenex makes a point to focus on all emotions. Kleenex are typically associated with being sad or sick, but even I know that there are many other emotions involved in just those scenarios alone. When we’re in love we cry with joy, when we have allergies and sneeze all the time, we get angry and frustrated, but that’s why Kleenex exist! I love my little Kleenex emotes and in the future I may finish them. They’re so cute and I’m really proud of this idea and the project.

41. No Directive — “Flight”

While trying to think of ideas with my boyfriend Zak, we started to be stupid and joke around with things. He suggested I make a Pegasus out of Kleenex and I gave him that “are you stupid?” look when it smacked me in the face that Pegasus have wings. When I think of the qualities of Kleenex, I think of their many layers or “plies” of tissue paper. These thin layers make the strength and softness of each Kleenex. This made me associate the layers of Kleenex and their floaty, thin, and airy qualities. So naturally, I thought of feathers and then later wings. I wanted to make a wing out of Kleenex because Kleenex are very feathery and light. I thought this would be a very original and creative idea and I was excited about it, until it took me like an hour to make this stupid bugger. I used a cardboard base for the “bone” of the wing, tape, and Kleenex all around it and ripped up as the feathers of the wing. I was going to make two, but this one just took so long I don’t think I could bring myself to do it.

40. No Directive — Meet “Nex”

Meet Nex, everybody! This little guy is my cartoon for Kleenex. I hand drew him using nothing but a pencil, pen, and imagination. He was created from me associating Kleenex with school, because they are so often asked for there, and then I thought of all the children in schools. When I think of children, I ALWAYS think of cartoons because they’re specifically designed for children’s entertainment but I still ADORE cartoons at 20 years old. I like to doodle a lot in class and I always draw cartoons. I decided that Kleenex doesn’t really focus on children enough for their products, they should use cartoons more. Sure, they have the school patterns and stuff for boxes, but why not have a cartoon spokesperson or character on packaging like Nex here?

Nex was designed to look as much like a Kleenex as possible. His shirt has an oval where the Kleenex logo would go and the solid line at the bottom like most Kleenex boxes have. His hair is also supposed to be messy and fluffy like a Kleenex tissue. He was made to look as generic as possible so that most children can relate to him. He is plain, straight forward, and neat like the Kleenex brand. Obviously his name, “Nex”, comes from part of the word “Kleenex”; plus, it just sounds cool. I would love to see an animated cartoon for Kleenex so that they can compete with the little Puff’s clay mation commercials. It’s about time Kleenex focus on children more and kick Puffs to the curb.

39. No Directive — Story Time

My cute little books were made from construction paper, staples, and Kleenex tissues. Because this one has no directive, this time I found it harder to come up with an idea than I did when we had no directive to begin with. Even though it was difficult, I still had my long list of ideas from when I first started Project 54, and went back to that to see if I could find something I wanted to do. I came across my note for “books” in my list and thought that was a great idea. This really relates to Kleenex because, like we discussed in class, a good commercial or advertisement has a STORY in it that relates to the product. It has an introduction, conflict, and conclusion. I then made 3 books out of Kleenex to represent these three different parts to a good story or ad. These little buggers were a pain to make because Kleenex are actually difficult to cut with scissors so I went through a lot more that the 9 tissues it took to make all the pages. I was going to add words to the books, but I really couldn’t think of what would be worthwhile to put in them, so I decided to leave them blank for now.

38. Time — Punny Thyme

This stupid and hilarious idea came from today’s class where we had to do the photo exercise for “Time”. I was stupid enough to bring my boyfriend to class with me today because I needed a ride to school, so he is the one in the picture who, when he had his turn to instruct what I took a picture of, told me to take a picture with him and this Wiki article about “thyme”. Haha, so pun-tastic, Zak. Later, when I realized that I could use this as a post (which was really helpful) I wanted to make this idea better in some way, but I couldn’t get past how it had nothing to directly do with Kleenex. Instead I decided that because it was inspired by Kleenex being used as a way to clean iPhone screens, and that’s why he told me to take a picture of it, it had everything to do with Kleenex as well as time. Even though the “thyme” is a pun, iPhones always have time on their display. So to make this into an awesome, creative post, we sat down and for the remaining 20ish minutes we needed for this post we created a thyme meme! (If you don’t know what a meme is, please look it up.)

We bounced ideas off of each other for what to put, and came up with some pretty hilarious crap to make into a meme. I was even able to put Kleenex in there! HA HA! It took a lot of effort to do that, leave me alone. Anyway, I freakin love this post so much and it was a great way to have fun and be productive at the same time.

37. Time — Evolution

When I think of time I think of history. Of course then I think of the history of Kleenex and how I’ve learned that it was created for women to remove makeup and not for blowing your nose. I think of how long it’s been since Kleenex was created and how it still dominates it’s market as the best of the best. But instead of doing something like a historical time line for my project, I wanted to do something a little sillier and more interesting. You might not think that a scientific-like illustration is interesting, but when you think about how silly it is, it starts to be.

I thought of time as in the amount that it takes for a Kleenex to be made. Instead of a boring display of how they are processed I decided to take an approach as if Kleenex were a living thing and how it would evolve into its current state. I then thought of evolution and then the evolution diagrams that are usually in textbooks so I went with it and created this in Photoshop. I even added my own little description of what it would be like for a Kleenex evolution process to be displayed in a science book. After creating this painstaking diagram thing in Photoshop I actually have a new found respect for the poor people who have to make hundreds of these things for one book. That’s yet another thing I’ve learned while doing this project. Hooray learning!

So this cute little bugger right here is me at about 8 or so. Most people, myself included, associate Kleenex with their childhood days at school due to the constant request for parents to donate supplies. Someone always brought in a 2305982031467 pack of Kleenex for the class to use through out the year and of course paper towels, sanitizer, etc. The first thing that comes to mind when you mention Kleenex and time to me is just that; school. With this in mind I wanted to go back in time and see what I was like in elementary school compared to my current state as a 20 year old college kid. I went on a mission with my dad to go find some kind of elementary school relic that best showed me as a person at that time in history. After about an hour of searching through old photos, art work, school work, and other things, I stumbled upon this little gem. This little school project best shows who I was at that point in time. And you know what? It’s really amazing to me because I have really not changed much since I was a kid. All of those “favorites” up there are still the same (minus the favorite story and subject). Who would guess that after all this time I still enjoy all the same things, still look the same, have the same bad spelling habit, and still have the same aspirations? I was always naive, as most children are in this aspect, that I would be the same forever, but time has not changed me all these 18 years later. Kleenex really does give you that nostalgic feeling for your childhood every time you look at the box and it reminds you of that time when you were growing into the person you will be in the future.

34. Time — The All-in-One Box

This is the reinvented Kleenex box of the future! Over time, the Kleenex has changed and evolved slightly, but the box has remained a cardboard box (of various shapes and sizes) that does nothing more than hold the Kleenex while sporting a fashionable design. It’s time to give the Kleenex box an upgrade! This is my invention, the All-in-One Box, made exclusively for Kleenex brand. This high-tech box not only holds your precious facial tissues in a convenient location by your bed, but now it’s also your bed side digital alarm clock with FM/AM/XM radio alarm! This stylish alarm clock box also has a telephone built in! (WOW!) The buttons on the side allow you to dial a number, hit talk to use the speaker phone (speakers are built in the front which also hide the microphone), and end the call with the end button! You’ll never have to leave your bed again with the All-in-One Kleenex Box! (Refill tissues sold separately.)

This box is an amazing concept, created by moi, that originally came from me taking the “time” directive and wanting to make just an alarm clock tissue box. I pushed the idea further and came up with my own little invention. I figured over time the Kleenex needed to evolve more with the heavy influx of technology into our daily lives and the best way of doing this would be to jazz it up with some low-cost technological bits. This was completely Photoshopped by me using various stock photos I’ve found. It took me a good hour or so to get this thing looking realistic and trying to reacquaint myself with some Photoshop tools. I’m pretty pleased with this idea and really love my little infomercial-like description I added with it. Don’t you just want one on your table?!

32. Perspective — My Perspective

This post isn’t very artsy or pretty, and I apologize to those who’ve enjoyed those. To change it up a bit, I offer my perspective and ideas toward Project 54, the directives, and Kleenex brand tissues. These lists were taken from my iPhone, which is what I’ve been using to record my thoughts, ideas, and perspective whenever it comes to me. This happens usually at night when I’m trying to sleep or in class, which both instances my phone is never far and always backs up my notes. So I decided to go through and check off the ones I’ve already done and keep those that I’ve not used yet or am perhaps going to use later. I thought this was a great way for you to see my perspective on our given directives and understand my thought and listing processes. This is the product of the entire semester’s notes, so it’s collectively a lot of time taken to make this list. To me, this relates to Kleenex in the way that I imagine this is how creative advertisers list their ideas when making up new commercials or ads for Kleenex. They must have some sort of method of documenting their creativity at Kleenex, just as Will and Scott explained to us in class. A lot of the ideas under “Project 54 ideas” on the left also come from my perspective of what words I associate with the Kleenex brand, so that also ties in the brand quite nicely.

31. Perspective — A Gentleman’s Tissue

While lying in bed trying to fall asleep, I again was thinking about what to do for my projects. It came to me as I was laying there that through out history women have been the target demographic for purchasing Kleenex. Kleenex was originally invented for women to remove make up with cold cream, so why aren’t men marketed toward? I thought it would be a great change in perspective to focus on men as a focus group and as Kleenex as more then just a household item. I thought it needed a fresh perspective, making Kleenex a fashionable, classy item for men to want in order to be considered gentlemen. This ides of having a Kleenex in the lapel pocket also came from that one class where Scott and Will were asking if just having a Kleenex in your jacket pocket was a good idea or not and why. So I used my twist on that idea and gave it a more original perspective! I drew this up today, not planning on it to be anything more than sketch, so please don’t judge on the quality, but I really had this 50′s advertisement vibe going on when I was thinking about this idea. I know we’re not supposed to make straight up ads, but I thought it really connected with the idea of 50′s society always keeping up appearances and ads making men want to be more than just men, but classy, well-rounded gentlemen. I tried my hand at making a little slogan with it, just because I thought it needed something to pull it together. And I also made the Kleenex box more masculine because they always have such feminine, home-y looking patterns on them that most men wouldn’t really be fond of. All in all, I feel this is a nice little test to see how I like making advertisements for a product and so far I really like it.

To start off my post, I would like to explain how my father is an artist, my entire life I have not

To start off my post, I would like to explain how my father is an artist, my entire life I have not seen him go a single day going with out a pencil or a paint brush in his hand. He is very talented, and I really admire him for that.

When my grandmother pasted away he started painting a portrait of her, but he had left out a very important detail. My grandmother always had a lump in her left arm, because that is where she kept her Kleenex. He said it could not be a picture of her with out that detail. That is why the painting goes unfinished.

She was always a very flemmy woman, and always had a tickle in her throat. He said it was probably part of having a big nose. Even when she was not flemmy, she would still carry around the Kleenex in her sleeve, because that was part of her personal thinking. It comes from a long line in history of that thinking. Even in 1700s gentleman and ladies would carry around handkerchiefs up their sleeves as always having a way of having them handy. It was also seen as more polite that what they could have done to their sleeves, even day we carry around little mortal Kleenex packets for travel in our purses or pockets. I think that is kinda what they did instead, was put it in there sleeve.

Another thing that would not have been the same with out, was my great great aunt Tante Marta. She would sew a pocket on to all of her work jackets, any fabric or print. They would never match. She would mix plaid with polka dots, strips with paisley. Positively awful combinations , that completely clashed. The whole point to having this little pocket right on her stomach, was to carry Kleenex. Instead of putting them on her sleeve the lady would sew pockets on to all of her clothing just to carry around Kleenex for when she needed them. This really shows that Kleenex has been important to many people for a long time, and if we would go without Kleenex that would hard, because it seems to be engraved into our brains as a choice product.

30. Shock — “Girl Crying With Kleenex”

This glorious piece right here is my free hand drawing of Roy Lichtenstein’s “Crying Girl”. When I envision “shock” I think of cartoons of characters with giant “GASP” or “WOW” bubbles behind them and bright, primary colors. A great pop artist, Roy Lichtenstein, was inspired by melodramatic cartoon images for his paintings, mostly of women crying or just being emotional. So I thought of his wonderful paintings and women crying and being shocked and wanted to do my own version with a tie-in to Kleenex. I sat down, looked at the image in the link below and set to work. Instead of just simply copying this work, I took a LOT of artistic liberty with this drawing, the most notable change being the Kleenex in her hand (as well as the hair and shirt, but that’s not that interesting). This was initially supposed to be an pop culture image with a pop culture brand (Kleenex) with the emotion “shock” being portrayed, but that probably isn’t as interesting as what I have gotten out of this idea.

I’m shocked. I really am. Not just because I want to personally tie into the directive, but I am literally shocked because I am an artist and I have been so depressed and discouraged for the past number of years that I have not created any real art. This is the first thing in probably two years that I’ve put effort into creating and I’m absolutely stunned at how well this turned out. I’m so happy I just don’t even know what to feel. I hope this will inspire me to continue making art again and be able to share it in this blog. Thanks, Kleenex. You are shockingly inspirational. <;3

At the time of this directive all I could think about was our VCU Rams in the NCAA tournament again. I love our basketball team and our coach so much, but I especially love the “Shaka the World” shirts that can be seen all over campus. I really love the creativity and the imagination behind that slogan and I think that it’s a great way for fellow Rams to rally for our team. I feel envious of the person who came up with this great phrase and I was inspired to make my own slogan like this one, but for Kleenex. So what you see is my T-shirt design for Kleenex tissues. I used a variation of the Shaka slogan, but as a way to spread the awareness of Kleenex’s mission as a brand: to spread it’s brand to be a world-wide success and keep the world a cleaner, more pleasant world. I really felt that this was conveyed well through the “Kleen the World” slogan as well as the simple design on an all white shirt that resembles the product. The Kleenex logo on the back corner of the shirt wasn’t just plopped in there to tie into the brand but it’s a way for people to actually take notice to the brand. I love this idea a lot because it goes hand in had with my love of graphic design and I think I really did Kleenex justice with this one. I hope one day they stumble upon this and decide to use this idea!

I love this idea. The first time I heard the directive shock I knew I wanted to make Kleenex socks because every time I wear socks I just mosey around the house on the carpet and end up shocking someone or something or even myself. The static that builds up between the friction of socks and carpet is quite fun and I thought it’d be even more fun to make socks out of Kleenex! Now, I only made one sock because I just got my left foot tattooed and I can’t exactly put tape and tissues on it, but making one alone was hard enough. I could barely see all of my foot to make sure it was covered by enough tissue. But here’s my foot and my attempt at a Kleenex sock. Kleenex are pretty soft and would make pretty great socks to be honest. I wore it around the house for about 10 minutes to find my dad and show him and also to see if I built up any static to shock him with and I ended up putting a hole in the toe like I do with my actual socks. So now it’s super realistic! I’m surprised it didn’t build up any static and shock anyone, but maybe that’s a good thing. My sock was made with just tape, regular Kleenex tissues, and more tape.

27. Omission — Who’s that Facial Tissue?

Don’t judge me on this post because I love Pokemon, or I’ll cry. But seriously, this idea is hilarious, but I’ll tell you why it works. This concept came from my unhealthy love for the franchise “Pokemon”. I’ve loved this stuff ever since I was a kid and I thought it would be a great idea for Kleenex to market to kids using one of the most successful franchises ever. I always remember the intermission in the show with the “Who’s that Pokemon?” game where they omit the picture of a certain Pokemon every week and would have the answer to which one it was, along with it’s picture after the break. Instead of making a Pokemon, I made Kleenex the Pokemon for my intermission remake. It was made using Photoshop, time, love, and magic.

26. Omission — Omniscient

This last Omission idea came from saying the word “Omission” too much. The more I said the word, the more my thoughts because disassociated with its meaning. I then started to associate omission with Omniscient. So I then thought how could Kleenex be considered omniscient? Well, who’s to say they aren’t? They’re always present wherever you go, if they were alive they could see, hear, and know everything you do or say. They’re sitting there observing everything in your life as if they’re some sort of silent deity. So this is sort of my representation of how a Kleenex deity would look. It has multiple eyes to see everything going on yet it’s still soft with a Kleenex exterior. I imagine it would be something we couldn’t see or understand as human beings, but I guess Kleenex in reality can’t understand us either. So as strange of an idea as it is, this is a ball of Kleenex with a final layer of Kleenex around it. I drew and cut out the eyes from paper and taped them on there. I’m pretty pleased at the way it looks and I hope others can find a way to relate to this idea.

Let’s play hide and seek with Kleenex! Can you find all the Kleenex in each set of photos? Each set has a green Kleenex tissue box hidden in one view and then omitted from the picture in the other. Good luck!

This idea popped into my head after a REALLY long brainstorming process. I was thinking about how omission means to leave someone/something out and I just couldn’t think of anything to go a long with Kleenex. I was seriously stumped. But finally it hit me in the face that I am always left without tissues when I need them the most and I always have to use toilet paper instead. Toilet paper is like using cardboard when you compare it to the awesome quality of Kleenex softness. Ahh <3. Anyway, I was thinking about how I always rush to the bathroom to get some toilet paper and thought instead, why can’t I ever find my Kleenex tissues? It’s always like hide and seek for me. And voila! A Search and Find was created. Just like the puzzles where they have differences in the images that you have to find by looking back and forth, I created the same thing only by taking identical photos of places around my house and strategically placing a Kleenex box. It’s really hard to hide something so bulky and non-stealthy, but I was able to do it, I believe. Some of theme may be really easy to find but I tried to make them possible to find as opposed to impossible.

24. Omission — Omit Emissions

For some reason when I was trying to think of a new idea with omission involved, I couldn’t get past thinking about emissions instead. Yes, I’m aware it’s probably because the words rhyme, but I figured I could make a pretty interesting post about this. So, thinking about emissions, I thought of cars and the gases they emit. To incorporate Kleenex, I wanted to make them the emissions coming out of a car to represent how we need to omit these gas-guzzling items from our lives.

So after many failed attempts at drawing and cutting out a car, I finally had to call over my boyfriend to help me create a car for this piece. I absolutely can not draw a car to save my life and I just didn’t like how mine looked. So I told my boyfriend what I wanted it to look like, he drew it, and I cut it all out. He’s such a life saver. So this is made out of construction paper, Kleenex, splattered paint, and hot glue, all on a canvas. I really liked this idea because it relates to my interest in preserving the environment. This is a pretty important post, especially for Kleenex because using paper is a non-renewable resource and should be used sparingly and recycled if possible. Hopefully Kleenex tissues do not provide a lot of pollution and continue to have a sustained source for the paper they use for their products.

23. Omission — Blackout Poetry

My first submission for “omission”. When I first got the directive I thought of this idea. I’ve seen blackout poetry before but I’ve never tried it. I love the idea of something being not only literature but also a visual art at the same time, so I really wanted to implement this awesome idea for a really creative post. I omitted words of of this scanned book entry that I thought flowed together like taking tissues out of a Kleenex box. Even though you are taking a separate sheet out each time you remove a tissue, there’s still the same, dependable, fluid motion that never changes. I associated this feeling with the description of religions that I’ve learned in my human spirituality class. Though life changes and is complicated and there are no true answers, people have a belief in something that is constant. Every person, even though an individual human, like Kleenex, each has some kind of uniform belief in something other than this life. Call it a stretch, but it makes a lot of sense to me and I was really inspired by the idea.

So here’s my poem that’s supposed to represent these ideas. You can see how the mood changes from speculative and seemingly cultist to a revelation on the greatness of religion. And that it’s not very simple. That’s my interpretation, at least, as the creator of this. You can read this and find your own meanings and connections with Kleenex. Feel free! That’s the beauty of this art form, just as you can create anything from Kleenex.

Good day to you. Or is it? I’m sure you’re sitting at home enjoying the wonderful spring

Good day to you. Or is it? I’m sure you’re sitting at home enjoying the wonderful spring weather and having not a care in the world. But I’m here to inform you of a very grave matter that deserves your immediate attention. You and I are living in an unpredictable and deceiving world. Yes, it’s true; the news I have is startling and may just change the way you live and think. Friends, I’m here to tell you that Puffs brand tissues are the very epitome of evil. Oh you think I’m joking? I assure you I’m not. I’m sure you’ve never considered this idea, in fact, I’m positive you never have. But new evidence has come to light that Puffs is not only bad, but horrible.

Have you ever thought how terrible it is to see these little, freakish children rubbing their noses all over the place? And how horrible the caretakers of these children are because they have neglected the welfare of their noses? No, I’m pretty sure that most view these advertisements as an attack on other brands like Kleenex and the sort. And just look at the varieties of product they have! Filled with nose irritating vapors and lotions so that you need to buy more when your nose becomes inflamed and reacts to these substances. And aren’t these wonderful Puffs tissues supposed to help you and comfort you when you’re at your worst? But they are just taking advantage of you and your wallet by claiming their tissues are the best there are! How could anyone feel good about that? Puffs take money and paychecks away from doctors, nurses, handkerchief makers, Kleenex employees and not to mention the local small business. What a truly diabolical brand.

Friends, there is an alternative to this madness. A wonderful, humble tissue from simple beginnings. This brand is known as Kleenex. You may think that Kleenex is the perpetrator here, but rest assured they are nowhere near that. Kleenex came from a paper company a long time before most of us existed. This wonderful young company actually created the very first facial tissue. They are indeed the granddaddy of all tissues. They have been in business for 88 years, serving every man, woman, and child under the sun and helping with their everyday needs. Kleenex tissues are the original. The most trusted. The all-around best brand their is. How could any one be deceived by the copycats and swindlers of another brand? Kleenex is in every home, hospital, funeral home, clinic, and school. You name a place, and Kleenex is there! It’s because they are trusted, reliable, and good. Why change what’s not broken? When you were sad, happy, young, in school, at work, at your worst, which brand was there to dry your tears when you needed it? Why, obviously Kleenex. Because their soft, wonderful tissue has always been, and will always be good to you. Kleenex will never let anyone down or swindle you. Why leave their loving brand for an imposter? An evil, greedy company that has stolen anothers’ product? Don’t allow them to fool you. Choose Kleenex. Choose the good side.

—————————————————————————————————-

In contrast to what I normally do for my projects, I decided to write. Along with this, I thought of good and evil as contrasts and my way of incorporating Kleenex was to show how good the brand and the product are compared to evil imposters. I know this piece is outlandish, but it has to be if you’re claiming there’s good and evil in with world of tissues. It’s not like they’re killing people. I thought it was a nice break from making so many crafty things and it really pushed my creative thinking. I think I’ve come up with some really good reasons to support Kleenex also, and I’m proud of that.

And so, here we have another project for the directive “Contrast”. While I was sitting here thinking of the definition for contrast, I really couldn’t get past the fact that contrast usually visually involves black and white. I know that’s what everyone thinks of at first, so I really wanted to do something a little different and original– hopefully, I managed that.

So after thinking about black and white for a while, I tried to think of what I could make with those colors. Suddenly dice came to mind. I then decided to take a Kleenex box and cover it in tissues and construction paper. Because I only have one cube tissue box I could only make a single die. I taped over the whole in the tissue box, taped Kleenex around the box, cut out circles out of black construction paper, and then taped those onto the finished dice. I definitely learned cutting even circles is pretty much the hardest thing in existence. So now if I’m playing a game and have lost the dice I have one I can never lose! Haha!

Here is a gallery of shots for my newest project, the Kleenex wedding veil! This idea came from me laying in bed and failing to fall asleep. I was running ideas for contrast through my head while I was trying to sleep and I thought of contrast as opposites. So taking Kleenex into consideration, I thought why do I associate Kleenex with sadness and not happiness? I then thought what is something that is happy and yet also sad? This led me to weddings. I know that weddings can be the greatest day of two peoples’ lives but it’s also sad for the parents and other loved ones to recognize they are leaving to go on to their new life. And because Kleenex can often be seen wiping away the tears at weddings, I thought why not make something beautiful and happy that relates to weddings? The bride is always beaming and beautiful in their white gown and long veil so I wanted to make a Kleenex wedding veil.

To make the veil I used a couple of tissues and split the plies apart. I taped the plies of tissue together to make the train and wrapped two complete tissues around am old headband to add some trim and keep it on my head. I also tried to make the blusher (the face covering part) and you can see that in the first couple images, but it didn’t turn out as nice as I liked, so I went ahead and took it off. I’m not sure if I completely like the way it looks because Kleenex were very difficult and fragile to keep together, but I really liked my idea so I went ahead with it. Oh, and the person wearing the veil would be me.

19. Contrast — Silhouette

Today’s post comes from the directive “contrast”. Whenever I think of contrast, I think of the colors black and white and from there I associated with silhouette making. The contrasting colors of a black shadow on a black or white surface creates this old craft, so I thought it would be really interesting to create a silhouette of my boyfriend using Kleenex tissues. I had him stand in front of four taped together tissues and I outlined his face on them. Next, I tried as hard as I could to cut out the profile of his face, but it ended up that the edges were a lot more choppy than using paper. And finally I attached the profile onto black construction paper so that the contrasting black would make the white Kleenex pop out to the eye. This was super fun to make and I wish I could have made more, but I don’t have any more models. I really think contrasting white Kleenex with colorful boxes is a way that Kleenex makes sure you notice their product and helps draw your eye to the tissue itself.
