Project Assurance and the PMO - learning from the horse's mouth

Graham Oakes’ blog post on the APM website ‘Project Reviews, Assurance and the PMO’ makes a very cogent case for the potential benefits of involving the PMO in assurance. For me, the connection is intuitive. One of the functions of a serious PMO is as knowledge repository. If you accept that function, I’d argue that the PMO is then fundamental to assurance and governance because managing risk and uncertainty depends on an organization’s ability to learn the lessons of the past. You have the opportunity to learn not just simply from Graham’s blog but from the horse’s mouth, as he and Lindsay Scott are running a two-hour masterclass on the evening of Wednesday 12th December at Manchester Metropolitan University. The event is free to APM members and only £10.00 to non-members. Graham Oakes is author of Project Reviews, Assurance and Governance. Lindsay Scott is co-editor of the forthcoming Gower Handbook of People on Project Management.

The 200th episode of The Project Management Podcast is released today, celebrating 6 years of bringing project management topics to beginners and experts. The four-part episode includes interviews with twenty project management experts who all provide their unique opinions about the number-one challenge that project management is facing today. The Award will be presented to the PMO Leader, nominated by their PMO team, who shows the most excellent leadership and understanding of what a PMO can deliver to a business. A panel of independent judges will review all submissions to consider how each nominee has led their PMO over at least the last 12 months and how they plan to grow the PMO under their stewardship in the coming months.

PMO Leadership - free event 29th November:

The APM PMO SIG local meeting for London will be held this month at CAFOD, the international aid agency. The main presentation of the evening is by Peter Taylor, author of Leading Successful PMOs, and chaired by Lindsay Scott. This is the final local London meeting for 2011 and will feature two presentations.

Hosted by CAFOD, the international aid agency, the meeting will start with an overview of the PMO within CAFOD by Anke Bysouth, the PMO Manager.

Delegates will then hear from Peter Taylor, author of The Lazy Project Manager, and more recently Leading Successful PMOs. He will talk about how to build the best PMO for your business. The session will explore some of the research carried out by Peter Taylor for this book. The book brings together the experience and views of PMO leaders from around the world and the project managers that work within the PMOs, as well as those who are now seeking leaders for their PMOs. He will identify what it is that successful PMO leaders have and do that allows them to be successful and how the rest of us can learn from those proven experiences.

Registration is at 5.00pm, with the first presentation at 5.30pm. The event is held at the CAFOD Headquarters, Romero House, 55 Westminster Bridge Road, London, SE1 7JB
