Band names are getting pretty damn absurd these days. Not only that, but with all the collabos, side projects, Project Pats, pet projects, projects named after pets, pet rocks, rock bands, and bands of brothers, it’s hard to keep it all straight. Throughout all the chaos, however, Volcano Choir is one band worth keeping a tab on. A side project of Justin Vernon (of ATG-fave Bon Iver fame) that consists of a bunch of talented dudes from the Badger state, Volcano Choir is like Bon Iver meets Sufjan Stevens meets reading a book out on a lake in the North Woods (I’m too tired for clever genre-classification right now). Let’s just say I listened to their debut album while driving late last night, and my discovery of inner peace through the music almost led to a pretty serious accident. Maybe my genre associations are all fucked up, but I’ve never been one to follow standard listening patterns. While classical music – in most households – has becomes regulated to Sunday morning breakfast, turned low so not to interfere with the detoxification that us secular folks claim on the Sabbath, I tend to go full throttle. I’d rather not ease into things.

I’ve been having my morning coffee this week to the sounds of Fake Blood’s BBC Essential Mix from a few months back (Side A, for the club), a vertiginous set which usually, as I begin my work for the day, morphs into either Walkin’ Bank Roll or the new album by Sunn O))), a destabilizing affair that must, in ways unexplained, affect my work at unknown levels of the substratum. As I move into the night, especially with the warm air coming in my windows, I usually roll with something Pressure Sounds or Wackies related, putting everything into focus. To cap it all off, I like to put it all in reverse, ending with some Philip Glass (who I’m revisiting in preparation of a piece I’m writing).

And just to throw everything off kilter, I’ve been listening to Disfear on repeat since I stumbled out of bed toward my desk this morning.

Chasing my tail. Working on every other project except the one I’m supposed to finish by two nights ago. Writing songs that I will erase before the last note. Falling deep into the first side of Walkin’ Bank Roll. Finding it hard to go sleep with Detectives Stabler and Benson. Only wanting to ride my bike, though there is such a thick grey outside that it’s hard me to even leave my apartment. Turning off my phone and Internet does not help. I stare at the cats looking for food in the thin space between me and my neighbor, sometimes throwing them pieces of bread. Eating pasta. Lots of pasta.

Does this always happen when you stop smoking cigarettes? Two weeks and counting….

I’ve spent the last 10 minutes trying to defend the rude raunchy crazy lyrics of this song in my head before I posted it here…and I can’t. It’s just classic Southern Rap that I was reared on. Enjoy it or don’t. Either way…
