Last night I stayed up too late looking at pictures of animals. Ugggg not worth it, even if snow leo

Last night I stayed up too late looking at pictures of animals. Ugggg not worth it, even if snow leopards are adorable and Spanish mustangs are really cool looking.

Today I actually payed moderate attention in my 9:00 class. I have a pile of labs building up that I should get going on soon. At 11:45 I had a meeting with the night class teacher to get advice about my project and how to make it satisfactory. I was really really nervous since he’s an asshole but it wasn’t horrible. It basically went like, read over my old project proposal and tell me that it is too simple for a 400 level class (it wasn’t that simple in my opinion but whatever) and I had a new idea that I came up with last night and I told him it and that was more satisfactory so I’m going to run with that and hopefully the project will turn out ok and I will pass the class and graduate and live happily ever after.

I still have my 2:00 class to tackle, we have a quiz. I haven’t studied because I haven’t had time and I don’t care. I’m sooooo hungry too because I was too nervous about the meeting to eat lunch and so after I get out of 2:00 class I’m going to get me some snacks.

Tomorrow the equestrian team is getting audited, which is sort of a pain but not awful because we don’t do much with our money. It should be quick. That reminds me I need to turn in a reimbursement form right now huzzah!

As I said before, I have recently started a new job. With that has come a new, but bland, office.

As I said before, I have recently started a new job. With that has come a new, but bland, office. So, I got to work. The first project I have completed is a table for the office. I found this ugly guy with a paper top for a couple of dollars at the thrift store:

I started by sanding the wood legs and sides a bit and then painting them black. I then used scrapbook paper on the top. I taped the paper down, starting with a full sheet in the very middle of the table. When the sheets were lined up nicely, I used ModPodge to cover the sheets, using a foam brush. I did several coats of this, drying in between.

Black and white, of course!

One thing I learned from using the ModPodge was that it makes the paper wet, so at first it will bubble up. This smooths out as it dries. But, I did make the mistake of lining the paper sheets up perfectly edge to edge. Lining them up with a bit of overlap would have prevented the sheets from moving as they dried. I do have a few tiny spots where there are gaps between the paper now. I learned!

Turning out completely different then i inteded it to be.Touristing at became somewhat of a challenge to me not only in technical ways.I always wanted to do a project with self representation (even though i feel slightly uncomfortable in front of a camera) and i thought the Aritst in Residence would be a good opportunity to portrait myself as a Tourist in Coimbra. At first i was planning to shoot the pictures myself with an external self release shutter but unfortunately it stopped working after one shot ,so i was more or less forced to ask the most embarrasing question i could imagine to others : Can you take a picture of me ? was the sentence i was going to ask on a daily basis .After the first pictures i found out that it wasn´t that embarassing to ask at all and for others it seemed to be something pretty natural that a Tourist needs a picture of himself posing in front of some national monument.During the first days i still tried to controll a lot of how the picture was taken and what should be inside of the frame. But after i saw the first results with fingers in front of the lens, pictures taken vertically instead of horizontally i felt it was very hard to describe to others what i see and that people had their own minds of what should be inside of the frame. I had quite a hard time in the first days to let go of that creative controll i otherwise have when i do the images myself but i came to see it as a coproduction with unpredictable results.I still consider it as an unfinished project because for me it still lacks the YES thats it feeling coming up normally after I´ve finished a project so i thought i will continue with asking others to take pictures of me.

Alana and I launched our Seattle hole-in-the-wall restaurant blog about a week ago. emeraldbites.wordpress.com.! We’re pretty excited because eating is our homework and we definitely don’t mind doing that. Our site also has a Twitter account that way our followers can follower where we take our cravings!

We only have one entry and the “about” page complete so far and the class feedback has been great. I’m thinking that we might have to put our “about” page as the first entry so that people can know about us just in case they don’t read the “about” page. We’ve eaten at a couple of more places but haven’t had a chance to post about them and I still have to teach Alana about Photobucket. Right now I’m using Photobucket to upload my pictures solely because I like how it easy it is to generate and link thumbnail photos. I really want to learn how to use Flickr but it doesn’t have any cool features that I like or have found. Another idea that I had was to present the pictures in a slideshow but I don’t know of a free hosting site that does that. If anyone knows of one, care to share?!

We have a long list of places to go and our friends are pretty excited, our goal is to influence others to check out the places we go!

Happy Eating!

Want to make an inexpensive but special gift for someone special this Christmas? Or would you like to have gloves that match your coat or other accessory? Then why not make these beautiful looking “designer” gloves?

What you need – - -

Gloves. You don’t actually make the gloves themselves, instead you either recycle an old pair or buy plain ones…plain ones because you are about to decorate them.

Embellishments. Fabric such as felt. Seed beads (tiny beads). Thread to either contrast or blend. Needle & thread for a little handsewing and fixing on of beads; and of course scissors.

Instructions – - -

Using pinking shears I cut round a template I’d made from a face cream jar, twice (one flower per glove); then, using a green felt, roughly cut out 4 leaf shapes (two leaves per flower).

Attach the leaves to the flowers and then embellish the flower itself with embroidery thread and seed beads.

Decide where you want to attach the flowers to the gloves, using pins. With a few stitches secure the flowers onto the gloves.

Now you have a pair of designer gloves

I’d love to see the gloves you’ve made, I can add the photo/s and your blog link to this post.

- – - Have Fun! – - -
:p

Today we backtracked a little bit. I noticed that the class is having difficulty with expressions with neighbor signs in them and also that they are leaving answers with neighbor signs in them.

Neighbor signs are when you have the operation sign and the integer’s sign right next to one another — like 7 – -2 or 7-(-2).

The rules are:

Neighbor Signs

Outcomes

++

+

+-

-

–

+

-+

-

Examples:

Results

7++2

7+2

7+-2

7-2

7- -2

7+2

7-+2

7-2

Think about addition as “getting” something. Subtraction is “losing” something. Positives are good and negatives are bad. So – when you add a positive, you are getting something good, your end result is a + sign. When you subtract a negative, you are losing something bad, you end result is a + sign.

Complete your booklet for homework. Remember it is a Project grade!

have you ever wished you could find paper and stickers for a special trip you took – to a city

have you ever wished you could find paper and stickers for a special trip you took – to a city, an area, a state, how about a country?

well wish no more! REMINISCE has just introduced a new line called PASSPORTS. there are 72 – that is SEVENTY TWO different destinations included in this line! each destination has it’s own two-sided paper and matching sticker sheet.

here’s a layout i did using the CHICAGO paper and stickers…

to create the skyline at the bottom of the layout, i used a craft knife to carefully cut out the skyline on the blue side of the double sided CHICAGO paper. then i backed the space with white cardstock. I mounted the cut out skyline on a piece of white cardstock and cut it out again, then outlined it using a white gel pen. It has been adhered to the layout using 3D Dots. I moved it down and to the right of where it had been on the paper to create a “shadow” effect.

and, if you don’t happen to travel much, don’t worry, you can still think of fun ways to use this line! we love lots of different ethnic foods, so i decided to create an INTERNATIONAL RECIPE BINDER for some of my favorite recipes. i used the CHINA, INDIA, MEXICO, ITALY, FRANCE and SPAIN papers and stickers…

!!!

want more ideas for this line? then head over to the REMINISCE GALLERY and see more projects from the reminisce design team!

It’s a new day, a new week, and it’s time to get down to business. No more getting sucke

It’s a new day, a new week, and it’s time to get down to business.

No more getting sucked into marathons of Say Yes to the Dress. No more allowing myself ‘just two minutes online’ that turn into twenty. No more ‘that’s good enough for now,’ when I’m fairly certain I could double what I already did. No curling up in my Snuggie and knitting all day¹, even though my poor throat is a little scratchy and my nose a little stuffy.

This week’s only a two day work week for me, since we’re leaving Wednesday for Kansas City. I hope to really dig in on these two days, and not just say, “Oh well…it’s a short week, next week will be a fresh start.” Because, really? I have a tendency to gravitate toward fresh starts.

While I’m thinking about catching up and making progress and all those sorts of things, let’s all give some encouragement to Melissa! Melissa is still pressing on with her NaNo project, on which she caught up by 7,000 words in about a day. Her subject matter is tough (Hell) so she needs all the support she can get to finish strong. Click here to read about her awesome catch-up, click here to read about her more recent struggle with her book. Keep it up, my friend, you can do it!

All right. It must take some kind of discipline to catch up by 7,000 words, and I’m inspired by this kind of discipline! This number isn’t really a sustainable number for everyday purposes², and I’m aiming for more like half that today, but it reminds me that much more is possible if I’ll just stay at the table and keep writing.

I’ll let you know how it goes.

In the meantime, watch this ridiculous Snuggie advertisement if you’ve never had the, uh, privilege. Also, head on over to Melissa’s blog to read all about Blame it on the Weatherman! And if you’ve done all that, and still want to procrastinate, you could always knit your kitty a sweater. Just be warned, the kitty will hate you and destroy your decorations.

♦

¹As for the Snuggie, we received two as Christmas presents last year. Now we can feel warm and look like we’re in some wacky cult at the same time! Yay! As for the knitting, well, I’d like to be better at it. My first project was in sixth grade, where I knitted a turtle-neck sweater for our cat as a Christmas present. You can imagine how well poor Ginger reacted when I tried to stuff her head through the too-small hole. (Short answer? She ran up the Christmas tree.)

²But for a one- or two- day mini-writing-marathon? Very nice.

Today is finally the design review of our last project in Design 102, project ‘…for the

Today is finally the design review of our last project in Design 102, project ‘…for the…’ External panels (those professors from UITM and PAM) were invited to crit and comment on our works. All of the invited panels are Malays, and our presentation will be one to two panels (with one lecturer on side).

Kinda nervous, because it is the first time I am presenting my architecture work to external panels. Last time have done this kind of presentation before, but there is nothing much to learn from that time which is Foundation year. This time, really learn a lot from the panels too, eventhough I might be disagree with some of the opinions by them, since everyone will have different thoughts.

I am among the earliest one to present, trying to present it without showing any sign of nervous…able to do that successfully, but the panels said that my design is not that successfully, but with effort, because my project is done in large-scale, having to care on so many spaces in my design. Anyway, I’m satisfied with my performance today, and my design basically gets the approval from my lecturers. Everyone have different thoughts…this is what I can say, again!

There is one thing that I don’t agree much with the panels, that my design is not appropriate in terms of materials (glass) and proportion (those golden mean). Huh, they expect me to study on ancient Greek work of Golden Mean and Proportion so much. I actually think that glass is appropriately used in my design. Again, every person have different ideas! They have to accept my ideas, since this is my design…

Exhausted day, need to bring whole box of models and development sketches and the giant presentation board to classroom in early morning, and bring it back to my car, so far from the campus. Ahh, still got the Archicad assignment to be completed.

These are pictures of some of the boards presented today:

Some boards are really cool with computer graphic drawings, manual killer drawings, layout…models are nice…overall, almost all are good.

Do you really want the lowest bidder? A question you must ask yourself, especially in situations lik

Do you really want the lowest bidder? A question you must ask yourself, especially in situations like this one:

Here are my thoughts on the matter, for all PMs having to go through bidding processes, unless of course you are following the first rule of government spending…

As project managers, one of the legs of our triangle is “cost”, so, obviously, we would like that the lowest possible. Which brings us to the widely used and accepted bidding process – you generate a scope and/or bill of materials, bid it out, get the results and select the lowest bidder. (Ok, so I simplified it a bit – but usually, cost is that which rules all others).

My question here is – is choosing the lowest bidder really getting you the lowest cost?

I would like to challenge that.

I’m sure that if you’re reading this, you can come up with a few ways of how cheap can become expensive, probably (and sadly) based on your past experience… The lowest bidder didn’t fully understand the scope, planned to use lower grade materials, planned on using low-cost inexperienced labor, forgot to quote parts of the scope – or all of the above and other things not mentioned here.

Here is where I want to offer some suggestions to help you pick the RIGHT bidder for your project (It’s of course assumed your company policies and your country laws allow the use of these methods…):

Know your bidders – before adding bidders to your list, see their work, talk to their customers and see if they do quality work and have happy customers. if not – well…

Know your project – is your bidder capable of performing the work fully? will he need to take additional subcontractors? do you want that? when trouble arises – will you be pointed to the sub sub sub contractor for solutions?

Create a matrix – Evaluate and compare your bidders based on several factors, not just cost. The more sensitive the work, the more weight should be given to past experience, quality etc.

Grow a “home” contractor, but always challenge him – Its’ great to have a contractor you always work with who’s quality you like and you know you can trust – but don’t stay complacent – make sure you challenge your home contractors to make sure they stay competitive.

I have mentioned the work being done by the CIOB (UK) to develop a practice standard for scheduling

I have mentioned the work being done by the CIOB (UK) to develop a practice standard for scheduling in a few posts. This valuable work is now at the public comment stage and has a number of really innovative ideas.

The concept of schedule density contained in the CIOB ‘guide’ is not dissimilar to rolling wave planning but has far more practical advice.

The concept is based on the idea that it is practically impossible to fully detail a schedule for a complex project at ‘day 1’ – too many factors are unknown or still to be developed. The CIOB advice is to plan the overall project at ‘low density’, expand the work for the next 9 months to ‘medium density’ and plan the next 3 months at ‘high density’.

Schedule Density Over Time

Low density activities may be several moths in duration. Medium density activities are no longer than 2 months and focused on one type of work in one specific location. High density activities are fully resourced, with a planned duration no longer than the schedule update period and with specific workers allocated.

Activites are expanded to increase density

As the ‘density’ of the schedule is increased, the plan takes into account the current status of the work, current production rates and what is required to achieve the overall objective of the project.

This approach has a range of advantages over more traditional ways of scheduling not the least of which is engaging the people who will be responsible for doing the work in the next 2 to 3 months in the detailed planning of ‘their work’.

More later.

Market Designer: a grave problem of-supply and demand Wanna rent an apartment – forever? Grave

Market Designer: a grave problem of-supply and demand

Wanna rent an apartment – forever?

Grave sites, once sold and occupied, are intended to be occupied for a very long time, and their sale can’t easily be negotiated if more valuable uses turn up. So there is less turnouver than in other kinds of real estate, with predictable consequences, as this Globe article attests: Supply limited, demand eternal, graveyards fill up.

Is this important in other settings? Yes, indeed. Conservation banking and biodiversity offsets, for instance, are proving a tough pill to swallow by many environmentalists, politicians and public at large. To help tackle some of the questions, conservation easements (the contracts that create a conservation bank) are being sold to society at large as meant to ensure conservation of a species in perpetuity.

However, things change. What happens to a conservation bank when a fortunate species gets unlisted?

The brown pelican, listed as an endangered species even before the 1973 U.S. Endangered Species Act existed, is officially back from the brink of extinction, the Interior Department said on Wednesday.

Source: Reuters

I don’t think there were any conservation banks for Brown Pelicans, but if there were, bank owners and investors would find themselves in a very odd situation, loathing the good news because their assets and investments would have become worthless overnight. 3 S policy, anyone?

Punchline: things change. Don’t create now the perverse incentives of later.

As a project we were given verbs to choose from. I chose the word ‘flow’ as my starting

As a project we were given verbs to choose from. I chose the word ‘flow’ as my starting point.

I found inspiration from the wind and trees, as I find that nature can be a very good example of ‘flow’. This is because it is organic and is not set by any rules.

Some artists that influenced me were Gavin Mc Clafferty and Ilona Madden. Both see drawing as away of release and draw for the moment and not for the finished piece. How they draw is how they feel at the moment and so their drawings can often become unrecognizable from what they originally drew from.

I used methods used by these artists as well, including how Mc Clafferty drew on pages from old books, in a response to making his art not add to the ever amounting waste in the world.

I used a range of medium including charcoal, pastels, paint, pencils and pen. These allowed me to show a range of drawings that were similar but had unique qualities due to the different mediums used.

At the end of the project I feel that I could have explored more into certain techniques I used, but was happy with what I finished with. Trees were only a starting point and I could have expanded more into other subjects within nature if I had more time.

So far I’m on track. I’ve done four posts in two weeks, and I have 3 pretty well-formed

So far I’m on track. I’ve done four posts in two weeks, and I have 3 pretty well-formed in my mind that just need to make their way to paper… the computer screen… whichever. That puts me at the low end of my goal for posts per week, but that’s ok. I’ve integrated my twitter into my blog, and my blog into my Facebook, which was a goal I had that I didn’t write down. Also, my posts are shorter than I anticipated they would be, but that’s ok. I originally thought I was going to go too long.

One more thing- I’ve had a lot of comments from people saying that pictures would really liven up my blog. I agree. I would love to take pictures of the places I go, but unfortunately, most lingerie stores don’t allow pictures to be taken inside, and pictures aren’t allowed in ANY store inside Bellevue Square Mall. So I’m just going to have to settle for what I get off of the websites, which is kind of limited. Sorry folks.

Other than that, all’s well. I’m excited for the 2 store reviews and 1 info post I plan on making this week. Blogging is fun!

I’m knitting a cardigan… Without a pattern… For someone who lives in a different city. And I hope to finish it before Christmas. Last time I’ve knitted “a big thing” was 10 years ago. So… Will see:)

Day 0. I bought the yarn and I made the pattern. It is not real pattern, but will help me to keep the right size:)
Day 1. Probably it is better to call “evening 1″:) I knitted this:
