Hello!...

This video has been the guts of my labour for the past week!

Hope you like it.. the video was edited on imovie 09, and was shot with a standart dv camera..Although the college is after getting in brand new hd’ cameras this week so we get to use them for are next assignment which il get to in a moment.

The music in the video is a song by Groove Armada called ‘If Everybody Looked the Same‘. I don’t know how exactly i came around to choosing the music but i think what happened was.. I through on the ol Ipod and put it on shuffle *Which i never do! and this was the first song that came on…and i was just gobsmacked because i was looking for music for the video at the time . Though i didn’t notice at the time the lyrics to the song very much go together with college life/college and the diversity it has with many different cultures and people from different backgrounds alike. etc

We got graded on it today, and i’m well chuffed with my mark! Gwan!

For are next and final Assignment of the Semester .1. We have to make a college student Interview / Podcast with a collage of images and video footage so looking forward to that now! I’l throw that up on the blog when im finished that aswel which will be in and around the 17th December !

This seemed a looong time ago now. Earlier in the year my friend Owen and I made this little promo for our good friends Autohype. The picture quality isn’t so great as its not done on the HD camera, but I think its a cute little video:

I’m due to do some more filming for them on the 27th November in Leicester. Watch this space.

After pestering one of the Djs from the University of Leicester’s DJ Society (B.A.S.S), I managed to secure a filming job at one of his events.  It was being held at the Firebug bar in Leicester town centre on Halloween night, and I was asked to make a ‘highlights’ video. Here is the final result:

The two banes of my life are; I don’t have a car or a driving licence; and I don’t have any decent filming equipment or editing suites. However, I DO have very nice contacts at work who let me borrow lovely Panasonic P2 HD cameras and there is always the taxi. So I picked up the equipment from AVS after work on friday and taxied it home, otherwise it would have taken me all weekend just to carry it back!!

My housemate used to help me out with filming projects last year, and he had agreed to do some camera work for me that evening. He is really good at getting lovely shots, and it was nice to do a multi-cam shoot (makes it easier to edit). We also figured out that if you slowed the shutter speed down we could get some amazing visuals from the lights. Also, because we were shooting in HD, all the close-ups of the equipment were beautiful, the camera captured every bit of light reflecting off the mixers, and with the shutter speed low, all the scratching looked awesome  We didn’t have to use any additional lighting at all!! The shoot went well, the night was fun and I’m really starting to get to grips with the new camera which I’m so happy about

I edited on my housemates Mac for the most part, except on the final night when I took it to AVS and popped it on their big editing suite (also Final Cut Pro). Carl was really kind and sat with me for ages, teaching me all the bits and pieces I didn’t know(how to export to a HD file that didn’t look awful when compressed for the internet,how to colour correct clips) so that I could edit by myself in future. I was really happy with the final result, apart from the fact that the text within the video didn’t match the text on the flyer used for the start (that Frankfurter is one elusive font), something that will bother me eternally. But overall, I was pretty pleased with myself. There is nothing better in this world for me then seeing my project turn into something real!!!

The Dj has asked me to film another of his events this weekend. I’m on my own this time, I hope it goes as well as last weekend!! I have to say, I’m pretty nervous!!

NB:I love the Panasonic camera because it is digital, so every time you stop recording a shot, it saves it as a single clip, speeding up the transfer process in the editing suite. Sweet!

The renowned media artist and independent filmmaker Péter Forgács has used the material from Video Active to create a short documentary. By using footage from the different archives, Forgács gives a beautiful insight in the rich material available on Video Active. The documentary enables viewers to discover various aspects of European television history in a compelling form. This new work will have its online premiere on October 27th, to celebrate the UNESCO World Day for the Preservation of the Audiovisual Heritage and can be viewed from this day on http://tinyurl.com/videoactive. 

About Péter Forgács
Since 1976, Péter Forgács is present in the Hungarian art scene as filmmaker and media artist. In the 1970s and ’80s he collaborated with the contemporary music ensemble Group 180, and worked in the Balázs Béla Film Studio. In 1983, Forgács established the Private Photo & Film Archives Foundation (PPFA) in Budapest, a unique collection of amateur film footage, and has used this material as  raw data for his unique re-orchestrations of history. His international debut came with the Bartos Family (1988), which was awarded the Grand Prix at the World Wide Video Festival in The Hague (1990) and in 2002 the Getty Research Institute exhibited his installation The Danube Exodus: Rippling Currents of the River. Forgács has received several international festival awards in Budapest, Lisbon, Marseilles, San Francisco, New York and Berlin.
