How to make a polygon convex and how not to prove it

Paul Cohen was one of the great logicians of the last century, who won the Fields Medal in 1966 for this brilliant work. He, of course, revolutionized set theory when he proved that the Axiom of Choice and the Continuum Hypothesis were both unprovable in the standard formal system called Zermelo–Fraenkel Set Theory. The theory’s history is a bit complex—but the main creators were Ernst Zermelo and Abraham Fraenkel.

Today I thought, with our Thanksgiving Holiday coming up, I would have a short discussion of “why we prove theorems?” It is related to Cohen, and contains a “tasty” result about polygons that I thought might be a good pre-holiday story.

I only met Paul Cohen once, when we both were at a Royal Society workshop on the nature of proof. The main questions discussed were: what is a proof? why do we prove things? and what is the role of machine proofs? It was a wonderful experience. I still do not know the answers to these questions—perhaps I will discuss them in more detail in the future.

I noticed two things about the workshop. First, the senior mathematicians present—including four Fields Medalists—all agreed that proofs were for explanation. They said: The goal of a proof is not to “check” that something is true, but rather to give insight into why it is true. Also they all disliked machine proofs. Cohen was probably the most extreme in his displeasure at the notion of a machine proof.

Second, I noticed how the presentation technologies changed over the two days of the workshop. Computer scientists spoke first, and we all used powerpoint. I even had a short video in my presentation, which included slides with elaborate pictures and diagrams. Then, the relatively young mathematicians spoke. They used powerpoint too, but no videos. Just simple slides, some with a small diagram. Finally, the more senior mathematicians gave their talks, using just plain overhead slides. I will not say anything about my talk, but all the other talks were great, even though the styles were so different.

Then, Paul Cohen spoke. He walked up to the overhead projector with one slide and one pen. He then gave a great lecture: he spoke and now and then wrote a formula on his single slide. It was a brilliant talk and performance. So much for powerpoint.

Convex Flips

The tasty result today is due to Paul Erdös who first conjectured it in 1935. I just stumbled across it recently, while doing some research on another problem. I think it may be connected to an old problem—a disease—that I have had for years. More on that in the future.

The problem Erdös raised, in the Math Monthly, was the following conjecture: Start with any simple polygon in the plane: that is a polygon that does not cross itself. Define a pocket as a maximal connected region interior to the convex hull of the polygon. A flip is the operation of reflecting the pocket across its line of support. The goal is to reach from any simple polygon, a convex polygon, by using just the flips across various pockets. Is that possible?

The following is a figure from a paper on the subject by Branko Grünbaum and Joseph Zaks:

Note, is the result of “flipping” the path from the vertex to .

Erdös’ conjecture was actually too strong, there was a trivial counter-example. Béla Szőkefalvi-Nagy made the statement weaker, proved it, and ever since it has been called the Erdös-Nagy Theorem:

Theorem 1 Starting with any simple polygon, any sequence of flips eventually stops, and the resulting polygon is always convex.

A pretty neat result—no?

Proof or Insight

The result has been rediscovered many times, and also re-proved many times. But these proofs are not proofs. Many, if not all, have subtle errors; it is also interesting to note that the errors made are not even all the same. When I read this, I immediately thought of the workshop on proof—where is the fundamental insight why this process stops at a convex polygon? Somehow, a large number of authors, some quite famous, had missed it.

There is a neat paper published in 2006, by Erik Demaine, Blaise Gassend, Joseph O’Rourke, and Godfried Toussaint on the Erdös-Nagy Theorem. They discuss the history of the problem, the gaps in all the previous proofs, and supply a correct proof. So the theorem is true: flipping a polygon stops at a convex polygon—always. Their paper is extremely well written and its title says it all: “Polygons Flip Finitely: Flaws and a Fix.”

There are many different problems with the existing proofs—see the paper by Demaine, Gassend, O’Rourke, and Toussaint for the details. One general approach is to look at the sequence of polygons that occur,

as the flips are performed. Most argue via a compactness argument that this sequence has a limit polygon . One difficulty is proving that this limit is reached in a finite number of steps. This reminds me of a similar problem I discussed before on the distributive law.

Another difficulty is proving that the limit is indeed a convex polygon: in some of the early proofs it is just stated without any justification, while others gave incorrect arguments.

Open Problems

Given any simple polygon there is a best sequence, and a worst sequence of flips that make it convex. I believe that getting the tight bounds on these is still open.

Have a safe and happy holiday.

After a long bout of a lingering cold/cough/congestion which continues to haunt me, I decided that enough was enough and that I needed to get back on track with my P90X plan. When my infection initially hit, I was left breathless, fatigued and hacking. For those of us doing P90X, that’s the norm, right? Only this time it was not the worked out feeling I was experiencing. My body simply could not perform. So, for many frustrated days I was unable to stay on track with a true 90 day plan. I think I’m probably about a week off, so I could label my trek as P97X. Regardless, I feel like my body is at the point where symptoms are starting to subside to the point that I can perform and hopefully push this junk completely out of my system.
Last night was my last time at the Chest, Shoulders and Triceps workout. You start this program in the 2nd phase during Week 5. I’ll miss this workout because it’s really a fun one that blasts the upper body and really challenges you.

The first graph you see above I listed all the exercises that you are to do using your bodyweight only. So you’ll see many push ups, etc. Upon review of the data, I saw great progress in most areas. MOST… I’ve done more tri-rises in a different workout, but the time you are allotted kept my number from going as high as I’ve actually done (which is 23). You’ll notice the big Goose Eggs on One Arm Pushups. More power to Jack Palance for doing these, but by the time you get to these in the workout plan, my triceps are toasted and the body is simply not willing to put out any effort for these (even on my knees). Overall, including all reps, I improved 63% from start to finish.

On the second graph you’ll see I now list all exercises using weights. To attempt to figure improvement, I introduced a concept I’ve learned called “Tonnage” where you multiply your weights by your reps to get a figure that you can compare to the back end. This concept worked to show improvement in all but a few areas. For Pour Flys, Front to Back Tricep Extensions and DB Cross-Body Blows, there was no improvement shown due to the tonnage model because at Week 5 I was doing high reps with low weights. By Week 12 I was doing higher weights with less reps. So, while my strength was up, this is where the tonnage model needs an asterisk by it and shows once again the difficulty comparing actual effort in these cases. Regardless, I showed a total strength increase of 42%.
Whether flawed or not, taking 63% and 42% and averaging them out, I’m a little over 50% stronger than I was a few weeks ago. I don’t know about you, but that does bring a smile to my face as it shows validity once again to the outcomes P90X can produce. The numbers don’t lie.

The Bible is a brutally honest book. One of the things that it is most honest and forthright about is the character flaws of its authors and main characters. The Bible focuses on reality and how God works through the weaknesses of those he created to accomplish his plan. It does not concentrate on fantasy.

If the Bible were strictly a human endeavor, one would have expected its authors to exclude their own flaws from the story and the flaws of their patriarchs. Far from excluding such information the Bible is replete with the sins of its writers. It reveals both the good and the evil, the best and the worst, the hope and despair and the joy and pain of its authors.

The exhaustive look at the examples of this honest treatment of its characters would be way to long for this article, but let’s look a number of examples.

Old Testament Examples

When Adam and Eve eat the fruit from the forbidden tree and are confronted by God, they go immediately into blames-shifting mode with Eve blaming the whole thing on the serpent, Adam blaming it on Eve, and eventually even blaming the whole thing on God. (Genesis 3)

After being one of only eight people on earth saved by God from the flood, Noah gets so drunk that he passes out and is unaware of what is going on around him. (Genesis 9)

Rather than relying on God, Abraham succumbs to cowardice and instructs his wife to tell foreign rulers that she is his sister.

When he was about to enter Egypt, he said to Sarai his wife, “I know that you are a woman beautiful in appearance, and when the Egyptians see you, they will say, ‘This is his wife.’ Then they will kill me, but they will let you live. Say you are my sister, that it may go well with me because of you, and that my life may be spared for your sake.” [Genesis 12:11-13 ESV]

Abraham ignores the promise of God and has a son by his wife’s servant Hagar. (Genesis 16)

Isaac and Rebekah played favorites with their kids leading to all kinds of family strife. (Genesis 25:28)

Jacob tricked his father with the help of his mother. (Genesis 27)

Simeon and Levi killed an entire people in a jealous rage. (Genesis 34)

Joseph’s brothers sold in him to slavery and told their Dad he was dead. (Genesis 37)

Judah slept with his daughter-in-law. (Genesis 38)

The Israelites worshiped a golden calf while Moses was getting the ten commandments.

Moses was disobedient to God and was not allowed to enter the promised land.

The sins of the people of Israel were constantly revealed and denounced:

You have been rebellious against the LORD from the day that I knew you. [Deuteronomy 9:24 ESV]

David impregnates a married woman and had her husband killed in battle to try to cover it up (2 Samuel 11-12)

David did not effectively run his family which resulted in one son raping his daughter, another son killing his brother for revenge and another son trying to wrestle the kingdom from his father.

Solomon, the wisest man alive, married multitudes of women who led him to worship other Gods

New Testament Examples

The trend considered with the New Testament. Consider:

Matthew was a tax collector named Levi before being called by Jesus

Jesus dined with prostitutes

Saul persecuted and killed Christian before meeting Jesus on the road to Damascus.

Jesus rebuked Peter and called him “Satan.”

Peter denied the Lord three times on the night of his crucifixion.

John overzealously and impulsively asked Jesus to allow him to call down thunder on a group of people.

The disciples argued over who was the greatest.

Jesus was constantly rebuking his disciples for their actions and lack of understanding.

The Bible reveals the early church was divided, arrogant and materialistic.

For it has been reported to me by Chloe’s people that there is quarreling among you, my brothers. [1 Corinthians 1:11 ESV]

Now if Christ is proclaimed as raised from the dead, how can some of you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? [1 Corinthians 15:12 ESV]

For I wrote to you out of much affliction and anguish of heart and with many tears, not to cause you pain but to let you know the abundant love that I have for you. [2 Corinthians 2:4 ESV]

It’s clear that far from trying to hide their flaws and failures, the Bible actual highlights those. In the words of Lewis S. Chafer (founder of Dallas Theological Seminary),

“The Bible is not such a man would write if he could, or could write if he would.”

In mathematical proofs, circular reasoning is a deadly sin; in short, to prove A, you assume A, prov

In mathematical proofs, circular reasoning is a deadly sin; in short, to prove A, you assume A, prove B using A, and then prove A using B. In short, you have assumed A to prove A, but this tells you nothing… so there is no result. Circular reasoning usually results from a long proof in which you make a mistake; it is not as obvious as the above example. However, intuitive circular reasoning is very common; in fact, a large portion of mathematics was developed in this fashion and worked this way.

I will define intuitive circular reasoning as follows: I take an intuitive definition of A (that is, not rigorous in any fashion), then define B in a way that satisfies my intuitive definition of A, then define A rigorously that satisfies my new definition of B. I can generalize this: I use some desirable property B of an intuitive definition A to rigorously define A. This may seem strange, illogical, and completely unnecessary – but let me show some examples.

We define a tangent to a circle as a line which touches the circle at one point. But what is a tangent line to a function? You may say “a line that touches the function at one point” but take this example: Find the tangent line to f(x) = cos x when x = 0. The answer is obviously y = 1 (by differential calculus), but y = 1 touches the function at infinitely many points. You may try to use the derivative, but the derivative is the slope of the tangent line; this is circular reasoning (non-intuitive). So we have this picture in our minds and an intuitive definition of a tangent line. Using this and some elementary geometry we can easily prove that the derivative of a function f(x) at x = a, f’(a), is the limit as h approaches zero of f(x+h)-f(x)/h. Then, we can rigorously define the derivative f’(x) as the above stated limit and the tangent line as the line that intersects a function at the point x = a and has slope f’(a). Is this circular reasoning? The answer is yes and no. Yes, this is intuitive circular reasoning, but circular reasoning revolves around rigor. Recall that our first definition of the tangent line was intuitive; as a result, the second definition is the rigorous definition. In rigorous proofs, we would start with the definition of a derivative, then of a tangent line, and then show the pictorial qualities that accompany our intuitive definition. This order is rigorous and avoids circular reasoning; yet we came up with this proof through what can be considered circular reasoning; this is intuitive circular reasoning.

Let us take a look at area. The area of a triangle is bh/2, rectangle lw, parallelogram bh, trapezoid b(h_1+h_2)/2, rhombus d_1d_2/2, circle πr^2, etc. What about the area under the function t^3 from 0 to x above the t-axis (without integrals)? We cannot define it (recall that my previous blog entry on FTC did not rigorously define area; it was not meant to be intuitive). But we have an intuitive idea, and using this we determine Riemann sums, the definition of a definite integral, and FTC. After this work, we can define area based on FTC and the definition of a definite integral. Once again, we have circular reasoning.

Notice that my above examples have related primarily to the first definition; not the generalization. I will now give an example that is based on the generalization. Take multiplication of matrices. Recall that a matrix is based on transforming vectors; in addition, a matrix multiplied by a vector is another vector. If we compose transformations, the associative property SHOULD hold. This, along with some algebra, leads to our current definition of multiplication of matrices. This rigorous definition is given in all PreCalculus books, unfortunately without any explanation. The beauty behind it is obscured, but it comes through the process of intuitive circular reasoning.

There are many other examples of intuitive circular reasoning; here I have listed a few. Nevertheless, this idea has been instrumental in the development of mathematics through the ages.

Canibus teamed up with Eminem’s former rap group, D12, to take shots at the Detroit rapper, Marshall “Eminem” Mathers. The Jamaican born rapper, Canibus, seems to be carrying on the beef that started in 1998 when he though Marshall had ghost-wrote a diss record by LL Cool J. Since then there have been shots back and forth from both rappers. On this track he spits a few harsh line like “You pushed D12 to the side to sign Volton 5, if Proof was alive he’d b dyin inside , you aint no hiphop messiah, you a bitch cause you dissed Mariah..”. The D12 members seem to be bitter about being ditched by Eminem and got a bit personal, mentioning his step-dad and his previous drug problem. They also claim that Marshall had fallen off and wasn’t a good enough rapper. We’ll have to wait for a response and see if Slim Shady still got tricks up his sleeves. I bet Mariah & Nick Cannon have this track on repeat!!

Animals presumably lack God-belief. Are they atheists? To so define atheism as the mere lack of God-

Animals presumably lack God-belief. Are they atheists?

To so define atheism as the mere lack of God-belief is absurd.

Would it then therefore, be more reasonable to presume that “agnostic” would be more accurate? Or perhaps, would anti-theist be more accurate?

There are things outside ourselves which we do not know, and cannot now know, and perhaps may never know. Yet, at some time in the future, some things now not known may be known, an example of which is the existence of the atomic particles.

From such an one’s perspective (as from those whom so describe themselves as “atheist”), the existence or nonexistence of God can neither be proven, nor denied.

Science, for example, has failed to prove that God does NOT exist. And while there are individual claimants whom so assert, no scientific body of evidence has arisen to assert – or dissuade through proof – otherwise.

Atheism can be and is defined as “the doctrine or belief that there is no God,” which also claims “a lack of belief in the existence of God.” And it so narrowly defined, that though it is variously worded, the bottom line is that there is a belief.

Belief, however, is accurately defined and understood as an acceptance that a statement is true or that something exists, and perhaps secondarily, as trust, faith or confidence in something or someone.

Atheism is defined as the belief that God does not exist; then is it not inherently antithetical to assert that God does NOT exist?

There is no proof that God does NOT exist.

According to select individuals (not necessarily active upon this forum) whom self-identify as “atheist,” and organizational dogma (principle or set of principles laid down by an authority as incontrovertibly true) a “belief” is what they possess, yet simultaneously argue against their possession of a belief, or existence of the same.

The American Atheist website says that “…atheists certainly do not “deny” that gods exist. Denial is the “refusal to believe.” ” However, they further conclude that “There is no proof or evidence for the existince (sic) of gods.”

Yet the site also states that “We are atheists because in our view…” Other suitable words for “view” are “perspective” and “opinion.” And an “opinion” is synonymous with “belief.” Thus, their site could also accurately state, “We are atheists because we believe…” How inherently contradictory!

Such a remark is antithetical to that which is previously espoused, that “The common thread that ties all atheists together is a lack of belief…”

Yet setting all that aside, even Richard Dawkins remains open-minded about the claim that Intelligent Design is a scientific hypothesis writing in his 2006 tome “The God Delusion,” that “the existence of God is a scientific hypothesis like any other.”

There is logical conclusion to which those such as Dawkins arrive, whom assert in The Great Ape Project that chimpanzees, gorillas or baboons have moral rights, or warn of allegedly dire consequences of the “overpopulation” of Earth. Truly, they must be Enemies of Reason. For if apes have the same rights as you… then they are your peers.

Go ask the residents or visitors to Kyoto’s district of Arashiyama, with Japan’s “Monkey Mountain” if they think those viciously dangerous apes ought to have the same rights as humans.

Yeah… don’t keep that chimp in jail! Imprisoning him just because he flung a turd at you because you wouldn’t give him your banana and peanuts!? So he stole your purse, and infected you with SIV (Simian Immunodeficiency Virus) when he scratched open your face with his claws… so what?! Why, he has the same rights as you!

Who would be the judge? What law school would they attend?

Planet of the Apes, anyone? “Get your stinkin’ paws off me, you damned dirty ape!”

Now… what’s that about being a “monkey’s uncle”?

http://thisis50.com/forum/topics/d12-and-canibus-diss-eminem

Et en voici les paroles :

Canibus Lyrics

Verse 1
You pushed D-12 to the side to sign Voltron 5
If Proof was alive he’d be dying inside
You ain’t no Hip-Hop messiah
You a bitch cuz you dissed Mariah
Shit like that is supposed to be private
I’mma fry you on behalf of Mariah & Michael
Put you back on them drugs, make you suicidal
You can’t shut the record down
Nigga its viral, when you use the word ‘nigga’
Just remember your idols

Verse 2
You the devil in a red dress on MTV
You sign more black people than a basketball team
What you trying to say subconsciously?
You can’t rock the beat like me
Consciously you know I rock you to sleep
Slim Shady you a coward cuz you scared to rap with me
The only black man you respect is 50
And the greatest rapper of all time was dead right
You ‘dead wrong’ you shouldn’t have even been on that song

Verse 3
I remember the first time we met, I ain’t even liked you
Walking around my video set like you was in high school
It must excite you seeing black people being tribal
That’s why Dr. Dre signed you
I bet you right now you got a big rotten Rosenberg beside you
Trying to be just like your father, Inside you!
The Stan android fanboys need to kill that noise
I know what you thinking…Kill that boy

Verse 4
Renegade Schmenegade you pink like lemonade
I’ve been better than you before Genesis was made
You ain’t better than Black Thought
You ain’t better than Mos’Def
You ain’t better than Canibus, Professor Griff Hotep
So renegade schmenegade you pink like lemonade
I penetrate through Hailey’s Comet with metal blades
Yeah! You and I both know why i’m saying this
I hope Whoo-Kid get fired for playing this !

Bye, Stan.

It looks like old wounds heal slow as Canibus has set his sights back on Eminem to release another diss track at the Detroit native.

Rumored to be titled “Pop Killer,” the rapper, alongside another rapper known as DZK, digs up the past beef as he goes in on Mr. Mathers.

“I’ma fry you on behalf of Mariah and Michael, put you back on dem drugs, make you suicidal. You can’t shut the record down, n*gga it’s viral.”

For those that don’t know the history, beef between the two reportedly started back in 1998 before Shady was even signed. Em states that he was approached by Canibus and Wyclef Jean and was asked if he wrote the lyrics to LL Cool J’s diss track “The Ripper Strikes Back” which he denied, but added that Bus was rude with him.

Bus later tried to apologize for the incident by showing up at the Warped Tour in 1999 and asked him to rap along with him on the track “Phuck U,” but Shady turned it down, allegedly because he felt the track was a diss to Cool J.

Shots were allegedly fired initially on The Slim Shady LP and escalated once Canibus did his own version of “Stan” from The Marshall Mathers LP where he saved the life of the title character. The two continued to spar with each other up to 2002.

“He’s a devil in a red dress on MTV. He signed more Black people than a basketball team. What you tryna say subconsciously, you can’t ride the beat like me. Consciously, you know I’ll rock you to sleep. Slim Shady, you a coward cause you scared to rap with me. The only Black man you respect is 50. And the greatest rapper of all time was dead right and dead wrong, you shouldn’t even have been on that song.”

Artists such as Royce Da 5’9” have started to weigh in on the attempt by the rapper to wage war once again.

RT@dopeboySHAKE: ‘I’ll be brief and let me just keep sh*t simple, can-a-b*tch don’t want no beef with slim? Noooo’

Wherever the random diss came from, only Bis knows, but Em is one with quite the track record with battle rap. “Warning” shows that he isn’t afraid to throw a woman under the bus and his relentless references to his former wife Kim shows that he knows no bounds and can see no boundaries.

Engaging countless battles in his career ranging from Everlast to Cage to Ja Rule to Jermaine Dupri, the white rapper has earned his stripes in the battlefield. Good luck.

“I remember the first time we met, I ain’t even like you. Walking around my video set like you was in high school. It must excite you seeing Black people being tribal. That’s why Dr. Dre signed you.”

AHH! Okay. Well, Christian has been my hero all day. (That link is to his fantabulous blog. Check it out.) We warred on and off all day and it was fantastic. We both scooted up over the 30k mark, which means we are three fifths of the way done. That is how much a black person’s vote used to count for! That is a worthless form of cooking measure! That is how far we are! Neither of us has school tomorrow, so hopefully we can catch up to the official count. We are about 5,000 behind now, much less than our previous 10,000 or so. I’m feeling good about this and can almost see what’s happening in my novel. It feels good.

I stayed up almost an hour and a half later than I wanted to because I decided to do my math homework tonight, so all i have to focus on tomorrow is Nano and my english essay on Little Miss Sunshine. I have an innovative way to do that essay, though, so I think it will turn out alright. I’m going to read through the screen play and then as I watch the movie, read through it again and check for differences and take notes. Then my essay will be a breeze! I have a math test tuesday morning, then I’m watching a movie on the play Proof in english. By the way, if you haven’t read that play, please do, I really enjoyed it and it’s a quick read, for those of you who have adverse feelings toward reading. It really sucks you in. Very dynamic. Then I’m doing something in Bio, hopefully getting our essays back, and then I’m completely free until choir that night. How rad is that? My sociology class is canceled, so I have a huge long afternoon free. I have NO idea what I will use it for, but it’s going to be great. Maybe nap or play pool or leave or something. I should probably write more eh?

Well it’s off to sleep for me, Buddy is making a grand example snoring next to me.

Here’s the article. (H/T Neil Simpson) Excerpt: On one of the Galápagos islands whose finches

Here’s the article. (H/T Neil Simpson)

Excerpt:

On one of the Galápagos islands whose finches shaped the theories of a young Charles Darwin, biologists have witnessed that elusive moment when a single species splits in two.

Well, that would be very interesting… if it were true. But whenever I’ve heard these finches mentioned, it turns out that what actually happened is that populations of different kinds of finches increase and decrease in response to changing environmental conditions. No finch’s beak actually changes size! Some finches with beaks more adapted to the environmental conditions survive and leave more offspring than other finches who are not as adapted. When conditions change, the changes in populations reverse themselves and return to equilibrium.

Evolution News explains:

The deeper problem with the Wired Science report is not its perpetuation of the legend of Darwin’s finches, but its false claim that biologists have now “witnessed that elusive moment when a single species splits in two.” This is not what Peter and Rosemary Grant reported in their scientific article in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. 6

According to the Grants, in 1981 they found an unusually large male medium ground finch (scientific name: G. fortis) on the island of Daphne Major that they labeled 5110. They inferred that it had probably immigrated from the nearby island of Santa Cruz—though they could not be certain. For 28 years, the Grants followed all known descendants of this presumed immigrant, and genetic analysis suggested that after 2002 the descendants of 5110 bred only with each other (and were thus “endogamous”). The inbred group had a distinctive song that may have contributed to its reproductive isolation from other medium ground finches that were in the same area (“sympatric”).

But the Grants did not go so far as to label the inbred descendants a new species. “We treat the endogamous group as an incipient species because it has been reproductively isolated from sympatric G. fortis for three generations and possibly longer.” But an “incipient species” is not the same as a new species. In The Origin of Species, Darwin wrote: “According to my view, varieties are species in the process of formation, or are, as I have called them, incipient species.” 7 But how can we possibly know whether two varieties (or races) are in the process of becoming separate species? Saint Bernards and Chihuahuas are two varieties that cannot interbreed naturally. The Ainu people of northern Japan and the !Kung of southern Africa are separated not only geographically, linguistically, and culturally, but also (for all practical purposes) reproductively. Are dog breeds and human races therefore “incipient species?”

There’s no way we can know, unless we observe varieties becoming separate species at a future date. Designating two reproductively isolated populations “incipient species” is nothing more than a prediction that speciation will eventually occur. It is a far cry from observing the origin of a new species.

In the matter of belief, I have always found that defenses have the same irrelevance about them as the criticisms they are meant to answer. I think the attempt to defend belief can unsettle it, in fact, because there is always an inadequacy in argument about ultimate things. We participate in Being without remainder. No breath, no thought, no wart or whisker, is not as sunk in Being as it could be. And yet no one can say what Being is. …

[Y]ou can assert the existence of something – Being – having not the slightest notion of what it is. Then God is at a greater remove altogether – if God is the Author of Existence, what can it mean to say God exists? There’s a problem in vocabulary. … So creating proofs from experience of any sort is like building a ladder to the moon. It seems that it should be possible, until you stop to consider the nature of the problem.

So my advice is this – don’t look for proofs. Don’t bother with them at all. They are never sufficient to the question, and they’re always a little impertinent, I think, because they claim for God a place within our conceptual grasp. And they will likely sound wrong to you even if you convince someone else with them. That is very unsettling over the long term. “Let your works so shine before men,” etc. It was Coleridge who said Christianity is a life, not a doctrine, words to that effect. I’m not saying never doubt or question. The Lord gave you a mind so that you would make honest use of it. I’m saying must be sure that the doubts and questions are your own, not, so to speak, the mustache and walking stick that happen to be the fashion of any particular moment.

I have read a number of blogs that demand the Christian believer must prove that God exists to those

I have read a number of blogs that demand the Christian believer must prove that God exists to those who do not share their belief. Some of these writers put up convincing arguments why we must submit proof. However, I like to reference the Word to find the direction I should take in such matters. In the Scripture, I find a fellow believer who was ordered by unbelievers to quit teaching and preaching Jesus. Peter’s response is found in…

Acts 5:29 “Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men.”

This seems like very good advice, so I went to the Word to see what it says about providing proof that God exists. Not surprisingly, I found not one single instance where God directed the believer to prove His existence. If we are not supposed to prove God is, then what? How about this…

Mark 16:15 “And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.”

Proclaiming the good news is a far different thing than proving that God does, indeed, exist. It doesn’t provide evidence for a God, but it does provide a foundation upon which one can build a relationship with our Creator. It is in the establishing of this relationship that one will receive all the proof they need to believe that there is a God. We are told in…

John 14:21 “He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.” and again in John 14:23 “Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.”

It’s clear to me that God is the one who will provide proof of His existence. It’s as simple as believing He is, hearing His Word and doing it. So, if there are any requests for me to provide proof that my Heavenly Father is real, my response is and will always be…

No thanks and have a nice day!!!

At the time it was written, the Bible was widely circulated and viewed by eyewitnesses to the events

At the time it was written, the Bible was widely circulated and viewed by eyewitnesses to the events it records. As regards the New Testament, fragments of 5 books have been found from within 35 years of Jesus’ death. These eyewitnesses would have been in a position to refute what the authors had written and the lack of any such refutation provides further evidence for the reliability of the Bible.

In his letter to the church in Corinth, Paul explains that Jesus appeared to 500 and disciples and makes a point that many of them are still alive.

Then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have fallen asleep. Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles. Last of all, as to one untimely born, he appeared also to me. [1 Corinthians 15:6-8 ESV]

The point is clear, these eyewitnesses were there when the event in question happened, and Paul invites his readers to go corroborate what he is saying. Rather than shy away from historical figures and events which can easily be proven or disproven, the Bible if chocked full of such events. Paul is so certain that what he is writing is truth that he invites people to go check it out.

Further support for the reliability of the claims of the Bible, particularly the claims made by the apostles in the New Testament, rests in the persecution they faced from the Roman government and Jewish authorities. Despite rebuke, beatings, prison, attempts on their lives, and eventual martyrdom, not one of the apostles ever recounted on their story. It is hard to believe that every man in that group would have been willing to be persecuted and eventually die for a lie. Furthermore, the Jewish authorities and Roman officials were concerned with the growth of this “sect.” If they had any evidence to disprove the claims of the apostles and disciples, they certainly would have produced it. No such evidence exists!

Finally, there are a number of verses in the Bible where the apostles reiterate that they story they are recording is not something they learned second hand but something which they were eyewitnesses to.

Peter explains:

For we did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. [2 Peter 1:16 ESV]

In the introduction to his famous epistle, John explains that they were witnesses to the Jesus Christ which they proclaimed. They had seen him and heard him firsthand:

That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we looked upon and have touched with our hands, concerning the word of life– the life was made manifest, and we have seen it, and testify to it and proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and was made manifest to us– that which we have seen and heard we proclaim also to you, so that you too may have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ. [1 John 1:1-3 ESV]

In compiling his gospel, Luke relied on numerous eyewitness accounts:

Inasmuch as many have undertaken to compile a narrative of the things that have been accomplished among us, just as those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and ministers of the word have delivered them to us, it seemed good to me also, having followed all things closely for some time past, to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, [Luke 1:1-3 ESV]

In the sequel to the Gospel of Luke, Luke explains in Acts that Jesus appeared to his disciples and taught them for the forty days prior to his ascension:

In the first book, O Theophilus, I have dealt with all that Jesus began to do and teach, until the day when he was taken up, after he had given commands through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen. He presented himself alive to them after his suffering by many proofs, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God. [Acts 1:1-3 ESV]

In the Gospel of John, John explains that Jesus performed miracles and signs in the presence of the disciples so that people would believe he was the Christ. Jesus’ plan included the use of eyewitness testimony to his divinity:

Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name. [John 20:30-31 ESV]

This sentiment is echoed in the book of Acts:

“Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested to you by God with mighty works and wonders and signs that God did through him in your midst, as you yourselves know–[Acts 2:22 ESV]

Peter, in exhorting his fellow elders, reminds them that he was an eyewitness:

So I exhort the elders among you, as a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, as well as a partaker in the glory that is going to be revealed: [1 Peter 5:1 ESV]

Finally, in his defense before Festus and King Agrippa, Paul reminds the rulers that Jesus’ miracles and ministry were not done in secret. Rather, they were done in plain view as a testimony to who Jesus was and to allow those eyewitnesses to accurately record what they had seen:

And as he was saying these things in his defense, Festus said with a loud voice, “Paul, you are out of your mind; your great learning is driving you out of your mind.” But Paul said, “I am not out of my mind, most excellent Festus, but I am speaking true and rational words. For the king knows about these things, and to him I speak boldly. For I am persuaded that none of these things has escaped his notice, for this has not been done in a corner. King Agrippa, do you believe the prophets? I know that you believe.” And Agrippa said to Paul, “In a short time would you persuade me to be a Christian?” [Acts 26:24-28 ESV]

In conclusion, the eyewitness evidence is overwhelming. Jesus intentionally created eyewitnesses to attest to what he had done. Those eyewitnesses accurately recorded what they had seen. Those writings were done when other eyewitnesses were still around and could have refuted the Biblical account. Despite this, there is no record of this happening. Finally, the Jewish and Roman authorities could easily have squashed this “sect” by producing evidence that the accounts of Jesus were untrue. They were never able to produce such evidence.

We have to understand the geographical features of our continent, about 5000 yeas ago, to understand

We have to understand the geographical features of our continent, about 5000 yeas ago, to understand what happened at that time.

The Himalayas have been growing up all the while, and it is safe to assume that in those days, travellers could easily cross the region either way. The sentimental attachment of Hindus, towards Kailash and Manasarover is proof of my statement. If we have not seen the place, there will be no love for it. The description of the area as a green forest, in the Bhagavat Puran too confirms this view. Therefore, migration of people across the Himalayas is a distict possibility.

The most intimate charactoristic of a people, is their language. Early Aryans had Samskrutam as their mother tongue. If today it is a dead language, it is because, those people were in a minority and were forced by circumstances, to forget it and use whatever was the language of the people, among whom they lived. The fact that European Aryans do not know vedas, shows that, they migrated before we composed vedic sutras.

My children do not know Malayalam. Of course, they can talk in our language. Talking is not literature. To write in Malayalam, it is necessary to learn the script. So Aryans in India, forced their children to learn Samskrutam, in order to preserve their heritage and identity. Their early literature was the Vedas which, enen now, we learn by heart. All debates and writings were in Samskrutam. A poet who wrote in Malayalam was rediculed as half poet !

The Aryans who migrated towards the north and north west, were not so lucky, as we were in India. The fact that several Samskrutam words are transformed into the local language of the area only proves the Aryan ancestry of these people. Maximum similarity is in Hindi, even spoken Hindi. Samskrutham Hindi English

ekam ek one

dwayam doh two

thrayam theen three ( here the English word too is similar) dasham dus ten (“decimal” is derived from Samskrutam) mathr matha mother (derived from Samskrutam)

bhradru bhai brother ( do )

Russian and German languages have many Samskrutam words. It was a German scholar who wrote Malayalam grammar!

During second world war, a German scholar met the King of Cochin, who was a scholar in Samskrutam, They started chit chatting in Samskrutam; the English Resident was scared. The King was asked to abdicate.

Those Aryans who migrated to the peninsular India, accepted the local language, but continued to patronise Samskkrutam ,as there were no books in local languages. Thus the conclusion is inevitable. Aryan migration is from India towards Europe. Why they did not go towards Tibet and China, is a mystery.

Sexual contact with the local people was inevitable. Hence, the Aryan features are dimmed and local charactoristics became prominent.

Theoretically, we may say that north Indians are Aryans and others are non Aryans. In this, we ignore the people living in the hills, including the north east.

Davidians are a mystery. Unlike others, they have body hair, jet black complexion, teeth pushing the lips outwards, heavy jaws and stocky, short body. There is not a single Samskrutam word in Tamil which has only 26 letters. Malayalam too had no Samskrutam words. The numbers onnu, randu, moonnu, nalu, anchu, aru, ezhu, ettu, onpathu and pathu (one to ten) of Malayalam can be understood by people of all states in the south. It is a proof that Dravidian people are a distinct group. They are even earlier than the civilisation of the north.

Hanuman was impressed bythe grandeur of the Lankan capital, which seemed to be paradise in this world!

Tamil literature was highly developed, even before English education spread in the country.

Every day we read about new archeological discoveries in Tamilnadu.

What most people want to know from a California contract lawyer is whether they or the other party h

What most people want to know from a California contract lawyer is whether they or the other party have broken that agreement and whether they are obligated to pay for breaking that contract or agreement in California.

If you have an issue with a contract in California visit our law firm website at http://www.sebastiangibsonlaw.com for more information and call us at any of the numbers easily found on our website.

If you’re in business in California and even if you’re not, you already know what a contract is. It’s that thing you signed when you or another party agreed to pay something in return for something else.

In order to determine the answer to who’s entitled to what, a contract attorney in California must read the contract and learn what happened from the client. If the contract is in writing, for the most part, the written terms of the contract determine the answers to those questions. But it is still usually necessary for a California contract lawyer to advise a client how the law looks at such terms.

If the agreement was not in writing, then the client’s statements and those made by the other party when the agreement was made become of more significance. In other cases, the question of whether a contract exists or not, may depend on whether there was an offer and an acceptance of that offer.

A contract can also be implied by the conduct of the parties. However, implied contracts and oral contracts are usually the most difficult types of contracts to prove. A written contract is the easiest, and this is why contract attorneys advise everyone to always put their agreements into writing.

In determining whether there has been a breach of the contract under California contract law, or in other words, whether one of the parties broke their agreement, it is required to determine if one of the parties performed their promises under the contract agreement.

For one party to obtain damages from the other, the performing party must have performed his or her obligations under the contract, or there must have been what the law allows as a valid excuse to his or her performance. The performing party also may allege that the other party waived the performing party’s performance. However, a party claiming that his or her performance was excused or waived has a much more difficult burden of proof, in most cases, to be successful and obtain damages

The crux of a breach of contract claim is the other party’s breach. The breach may be a failure to pay money, or the failure to perform some service, deliver goods or take some other action.

Since the object of a claim for breach of contract is the damages suffered by a party, the person claiming he or she was wronged, must have also suffered some financial damages.

The next question for clients is what are they entitled as a result of the breach of the contract by the other party.

The general rule is that the injured party is entitled to the benefits he or she would have received if the contract had been performed. This is generally the amount that would compensate the aggrieved party for all the detriment he or she suffered as a result of the breach.

That doesn’t mean, however, you can claim emotional stress, punitive damages, try to inflate your damages unfairly, or obtain damages which cannot be clearly ascertained.

However, an injured party may obtain damages for lost profits, for his or her expenditures, for interest, and if the contract provided for them, even for attorneys’ fees and costs and again, if the contract provides for a specific amount of damages, for these “liquidated” damages.

Each case rests on its own merits and there are different ways to plead and prove a person’s damages. Some remedies under the law are exclusive while in other cases, a client must choose which damages he or she would prefer to obtain, for example specific performance of the contract. On the other hand, a party, may have the option of rescinding the contract (the remedy of rescission) when it has been breached by the other party, and seek restitution of the price he or she paid, in other words, his or her consideration.

While the terms of a written contract are extremely important where there is one, there is much more to contract law than simply reading a contract or writing down simple terms such as “if I do this, you agree to pay me that.” If you want the right to be paid for your attorney’s fees and costs in the event of a breach, for instance, some additional language must be added to the contract.

In California, a prevailing party in a contract dispute is entitled to attorneys’ fees only if the contract provides for this. If the contract is silent, each party is responsible for their own attorneys’ fees and costs. This is often crucial to a decision by a client of whether or not to go forward with litigation.

There are also many other issues a California contract lawyer must analyze in a contract case, among which. are whether a California court would have jurisdiction over the case. This may depend on issues such as where the contract was formed, where it was to be performed and the locations of the parties involved. If the contract was agreed to over the Internet, there are another whole set of facts and issues that must be considered.

There is also the issue of which statutes of limitations apply and determining if an aggrieved party can still file a lawsuit in court or whether the time has run out on such a claim. There are different statutes dealing with written contracts and oral contracts and those statutes vary from state to state. There are also different rules dealing with contracts involving land or real estate, minors, and other situations.

If you have a contract that’s been breached by another party or if you are being sued by someone over a contract, visit our law firm website at http://www.sebastiangibsonlaw.com and call the law firm of R. Sebastian Gibson today.

They tested it with a wrecking ball and some explosives and it withstood the test which is really impressive. Supposedly the US Army is thinking about getting it for their Bases which would make sense. Not sure How much sense it would make for civilians like us.
Alexander, Everybody holds beliefs. Everybody believes in something, most often many somethings

Alexander,

Everybody holds beliefs. Everybody believes in something, most often many somethings – and some of the beliefs may contradict each other.

A world view of Belief – and another, from the dictionary:

1. The mental act, condition, or habit of placing trust or confidence in another: My belief in you is as strong as ever.
2. Mental acceptance of and conviction in the truth, actuality, or validity of something: His explanation of what happened defies belief.
3. Something believed or accepted as true, especially a particular tenet or a body of tenets accepted by a group of persons.

Beliefs can be founded in truth (another slippery slope), facts, proof – or – in dreams, wishes, thoughts and – well – other beliefs!

In every interaction you ever have, you will encounter beliefs that are not yours. Some beliefs will be founded on shadows and confidence thoughts. Know what your beliefs are and look to see what others are. If you are lucky in a relationship (and read the page on relationships), they will share some of your beliefs.

Beliefs are the concrete that our very opinions and essence of our character are built in and backed with. Beliefs need not be based on fact, or truth, or clarity or anything in the real world – although they can be. Beliefs are what a person has decided to latch onto and captures in the bottle of the mind and soul.

What this really means is that belief can be nearly impossible to change or alter in a person. A person will stand on their beliefs, regardless of proof, facts, threats, pain or punishment. If a person is a believer, then little can change that belief - except themselves.

Here is the advice I offer you, because the concrete of belief can last a long time…

Form your beliefs carefully

Know that you can’t change other peoples beliefs – only they can

Choose the people you are with by their beliefs (and other qualities)

Believe in things as long as nessesary

Be prepared to change your beliefs if nessesary (false belief can lead you over the edge of a cliff or in front of a train).

‘Birther’ stories led to Lou Dobbs’ resignation
Sources say CNN dispute over Obama’s eligibility was ‘beginning of the end’

Article: WorldNetDaily

Lou Dobbs’ refusal to drop “birther” stories about challenges to President Obama’s constitutional eligibility to hold office was a major source of contention with CNN management, leading the unconventional anchor to walk away from the network and more than $9 million, according to the New York Post.

Dobbs, known for his strong stand against illegal immigration, surprised his loyal viewers Wednesday night by announcing his resignation and offering no indication of his next move.

The Post, citing anonymous sources, said the beginning of the end of a long-simmering dispute came in July, when CNN President Jonathan Klein told Dobbs’ staff in a memo to stop reporting on lawsuits that demand Obama produce evidence he’s a natural-born American citizen, as required by the Constitution.

“It seems this story is dead because anyone who still is not convinced doesn’t really have a legitimate beef,“ Klein’s memo said.

Oh yeah? How about someone who spends hundreds of thousands dollars to cover up the truth of their past… is that legitimate beef’? Just because the libtards refuse to accept and acknowledge that there IS a difference between a short form and a long form birth certificate, and the fact that Hawai’i will issue birth certificates to children who were NOT born in Hawai’i doesn’t make the concerns of anyone questioning BHussein, the half-breed Muslim, and his eligibility. What’s so difficult and unrealistic about providing actual proof? I even heard one moron say that “high resolution photographs” of a document should be proof enough. Typical libtard thinking.

A source told the Post Klein’s move incensed Dobbs.

“They have been talking pretty regularly since then,” the source said. “And it’s been pretty bad.”

Dobbs, who also hosts a nationally syndicated radio show, told his radio audience in July that “even though I said I believe the president is a citizen of the United States, I don’t understand why he shouldn’t produce a birth certificate. My God, you’re talking about the third rail of American journalism, baby! That’s it. I’m not going to back off.”

The Post said CNN had long been asking Dobbs to “tone down his harsh rhetoric” on issues such as immigration.

Selective journalism. Pick and choose. Liberal media bias at it’s finest. The way I see it; if it’s an issue that touches ANYONE – it’s newsworthy. But, again. CNN caters to the liberals; therefore they have to dumb their “reports” down and only talk about whatever they think will bring in the ratings. (which aren’t so hot to begin with…)

Sources said CNN likely would not have renewed Dobbs’ contract in 2011, and the newsman’s agent told Klein that since both parties were unhappy, it would be best to release him now.

A television insider told the Post Dobbs was “polluting” the brand of the oldest cable news network, which is trying to position itself between the left-leaning MSNBC and conservative Fox News Channel.

A Fox News Channel spokeswoman told the Post her network wasn’t interested in hiring Dobbs.

Veteran Washington political correspondent John King will take over Dobbs’ 7 p.m. slot, CNN announced.

As WND reported, Dobbs told his radio audience Oct. 26 a gunshot was fired into his home after a series of threatening phone calls.

Dobbs said advocacy groups that support illegal aliens and have pressed for him to be fired “have created an atmosphere and have been unrelenting in their propaganda.”

Outspoken opponents of Dobbs include the Southern Poverty Law Center, the Anti-Defamation League, the National Council of La Raza, Internet media watchdog Media Matters and Geraldo Rivera of Fox News.

In his daily column today, WND CEO and Editor Joseph Farah calls Dobbs a “real newsman” whose departure from CNN after 30 years “leaves the network in a state of programming irrelevancy.”

“What makes Lou Dobbs so special,” Farah writes, “is his independence and fearlessness. Dobbs clearly set his own agenda. He had no interest in the ‘conventional wisdom’ of his industry. Dobbs thinks like a real American newsman – a throwback to an age when journalists actually believed they were watchdogs of government and asked tough questions in the interests of the people.“
