Matthew 13:57 ‘And they took offence at him. But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honour, except in his hometown and in his own household.” And he did not do many mighty works there, because of their unbelief.’

Jesus arrived at his hometown, Nazareth, to minister to them but they didn’t receive his ministry or honour the anointing on Jesus’ life because they couldn’t get past the fact that he was raised amongst them and yet possessed such a powerful anointing.

The result was offence and hardly any effective ministry took place in Jesus’ hometown. What a tragedy! Jesus marvelled at their lack of honour and unbelief. You know it’s serious when Jesus starts to marvel at your unbelief.

A lack of honour for the anointing of the Spirit on Jesus restricted the power of God from moving freely in Nazareth. There was not only a lack of honour for Jesus but also for the message he came to declare and the anointing he carried to the people (Isaiah 61:1-4).

If a lack of honour hampered Jesus flow in the anointing while he walked the earth, why do we get amazed to find that a similar lack of honour restricts the anointing in our present day ministries and churches? It’s never been about just honouring people for their sake alone but honouring the Spirit of God’s grace, call and anointing upon people’s lives.

What we honour determines the reward we will receive. Matthew 10:41 ‘The one who receives a prophet because he is a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward, and the one who receives a righteous person because he is a righteous person will receive a righteous person’s reward.’

I’ve observed the reality of this revelation in action when I preach in different church atmospheres. Where I am received as a prophetic ministry, I find great freedom to flow in the anointing of the Holy Spirit through preaching, prophecy, words of knowledge and miracles. But where I’m not received, its like chewing concrete, painful to say the least.

It takes real security in one’s self, humility and discernment to honour the anointing upon someone’s ministry. In other words, it takes spiritual maturity. When you open your heart to honour the anointing, you will receive a mighty reward from that ministry. Let’s not be hard-hearted like Jesus’ hometown but lets appreciate the different grace God extends to individuals and when they come to minister to us, honour the anointing upon their lives. It will be well worth it.

Once, I stood next to a friend during the praise and worship time at church. I was struck by the value I have for this friend, and began to ask God to bless him, when this thought came to me. I leaned over and told him, “Today your voice will be heard in heaven.” In that moment, the Spirit of God came over both of us with love. We both fell to our knees in tears and praise. It was awesome!

It’s so easy to get caught up in practicing, or using, your gift out of zeal and miss the heart of God. But when you move in his heart…who knows what might happen, but he will be present and will release his grace!

John 2:5 ‘His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”‘

I love this verse in the bible. It is so simple and yet is so profound, and it has far reaching consequences. I’ve long held to the spiritual principle of hear and obey. It has been part of the core fabric of my spirit and walk with God, however, while I still believe and practice it, I would like to add another word into the middle of this fundamental idea.

The word is ‘Interpret’. Hearing is crucial. Obeying is vital. Interpretation is absolutely critical. A heart to interpret what God or anyone else is saying is a sign of maturity and wisdom. You might be able to hear but if you don’t interpret accurately, you could misapply your obedience.

It’s true, we do know in part and prophesy in part (1 Cor 13), however, that doesn’t mean we fail to invest time and energy into rightly handling the word of truth we have received. In my early years of ministry, I would hear the word, have a desire to obey but not always seek out the clear interpretation. I see the same thing happening with different ministries in the body of Christ today.

Truth is, it can be hard to know how to interpret what God reveals to us. Gods thoughts and ways aren’t ours and as a result interpretation can be a struggle. I’ve learnt that godly counsel, extended prayer, studying the scriptures and some helpful dream interpretation tools have been useful in processing a download from heaven. One such book is titled, ‘Dreams – The divinity code’.

I encourage you to pay the price to hear God’s voice, exercise wisdom to interpret what God has spoken and have the courage to obey boldly what God has revealed to you. Remember, not everything God reveals is to be actioned but more often than not it is.
