Prostate health is something that must be treated with a balanced diet throughout life. Keeler said: "Prostate health is an issue that is a reference to people throughout their lives at risk not only if there are any symptoms. Because of its location, prostate health, ended up causing many problems.

With the graying of the baby boomers threatens to large and health care for prostate cancer is an increasingly commonTopic of conversation. The surcharge effective for prostate health is Saw Palmetto berry extract.

New research suggests that green tea may help prevent the spread of prostate cancer. In particular, phytochemicals in green tea, called polyphenols attack growth factors and proteins, interrupting growth processes of tumors, preventing them from spreading to other organs. Since previous studies suggest that the same natural plant substances might also help preventTop of prostate cancer, researchers indicate that further studies are needed to influence the green tea in fighting these common cancers. The best way to reduce the risk of prostate cancer is still a predominantly vegetarian diet.

Studies of diet and cancer also show that green tea, if they can be tested on mice with an aggressive form of cancer, decrease the spread or metastasis of prostate cancer to the liver, bones and other body parts. Further studies of green tea maydeveloping a treatment for sleeping, not the kind that threaten to prostate cancer many men have in their 70's & 80's prevented from becoming aggressive and fatal. About six cups of green tea per day, should contain the same amount of polyphenols for people that help to stop the spread of cancer. Other data show that the phytochemicals in green tea may inhibit the early stages of prostate cancer.

Green tea contains compounds such as polyphenols, which are known antioxidantsand credited to protect against cancer, heart disease and aging. Diet Green tea is generally regarded as a substance that protects against various cancers such as gastric, ovarian, colon to detect cancer, oral , prostate, breast and cervical cancer.

And frequencyProstate cancer in China, whose population regularly consume green tea, is the lowest in the world. Whatever the benefits of green tea, it would be a mistake to rely on tea alone for prevention.
UPDATE: Just talked to the surgeon. The procedure went extremely well. If he still has problems, it

UPDATE:

Just talked to the surgeon. The procedure went extremely well. If he still has problems, it’s not because of his prostate. He’s in recovery and waking, but they won’t let us see him until they get him in a regular room. This is normally an outpatient procedure. Given his condition, they are going to keep him here over night before returning him to Holston. After I’ve seen him, there will be a nap in my future.

PREVIOUSLY:

Well, here I am again. In the St. Mary’s (Mercy) Hospital surgical waiting room. This is my third wait in here this year. He’s has prostate problems for a while, but the lung surgery sort of pushed him over the edge. We’re hoping that today’s procedure will correct the problems so that his recovery can proceed. The recurrent urinary tract infections are retarding his recovery from his surgery.

He’s still got cognition and communication deficits from the stroke, so I’ve gotten in the habit of simplifying things so that I don’t spend half my life re-iterating explanations. He’s started getting snarky with me. Apparently, my answers are “so flip that he can’t understand what’s happening.” So he got chapter-and-verse involving a laser, his urethra, and just exactly what they were going to do with them.

I generally feel awful. I hate every second of dealing with this, and I’m afraid it shows despite my best efforts. And the last thing he needs is me making him feel bad about himself.

His sister, his niece, and my sister are here with me, and his cousin just turned up. It’s not without it’s small light moments. I’d forgotten about the whoopie-cushion chair. There’s a chair here in the waiting room that makes very rude noises whenever anybody sits in it. When somebody new comes in, we all kind of stop and wait to see the expression on their faces when they sit. Potty humor – that’s what I’m reduced to. I’m so sophisticated.

*sigh*

I just got a call from the surgical nurse. The’ve started – and things are doing as well as can be expected. More later.

The author begins by explaining how he developed the protocols he espouses, which was through trial and error after he developed prostate problems.

By far the most helpful – and easiest to implement – advice is in the first part of the book. Essentially, this is a body cleanse to rid the body of parasites. It consists of abstaining from solid food for eight days. In place of solid food you drink a nutritious blend of fresh lemon juice, organic maple syrup and cayenne pepper. You also add some supplements to this throughout the eight day “fast.”

In essence, this alkalizes the body, making it inhospitable to harmful microorganisms, which is the first step of his program.

Some of his subsequent recommendations are harder to follow, but they’re definitely worth trying if at all possible.

I followed all of his early chapter recommendations and found my own symptoms of an enlarged prostate diminish considerably as a result.

Definitely a great book for men concerned about their prostate health!

Doctors say that prostate cancer is the biggest silent killer of men. If this is the case; one would have to ask why?

Is it that ignorance is bliss? Meaning; what I don’t know won’t hurt me or is it the embarrassment that men perceive of being probed in a way which should be unnatural?

Which ever the reason; too many of our fathers, brothers and friends are going untested only to find out later that preventative steps could have been taken had they undergone early check ups.

On a personal note; I went to get tested the very next day after I visited a friend’s father who was diagnosed with this condition.

What I believed would be an examination slowed by the annals of time; turned out to be quite fast after I relaxed. Still in the back of one’s mind, one would think that at least the examiner would by you dinner and flowers before getting so intimate!

Having endured the 5 to 7 seconds that it had taken to do what was done; I can sit back recall the words of John F. Kennedy who said…

”There is nothing to fear, but fear itself”

As often is the case; there is no greater zealot than the converted. I am now encouraging men 40yrs and above to think of your family, your friends and your life and get your prostate checked.

No one wants to hear the doctor say…If only you had come in a year earlier we could have given you medication that would have prevented this!

To help you understand more about your prostate and prostate cancer please see the following.

Men there is no shame in asking your doctor questions if you notice a difference in any aspect of your ‘male health”

The shame is not doing anything about it!

What is the prostate gland?

The prostate gland is an organ that is located at the base or outlet (neck) of the urinary bladder. (See the diagram.) The gland surrounds the first part of the urethra. The urethra is the passage through which urine drains from the bladder to exit from the penis.

One function of the prostate gland is to help control urination by pressing directly against the part of the urethra that it surrounds. Another function of the prostate gland is to produce some of the substances that are found in normal semen, such as minerals and sugar.

Semen is the fluid that transports the sperm. A man can manage quite well, however, without his prostate gland. (See the section on surgical treatment for prostate cancer.)

In a young man, the normal prostate gland is the size of a walnut. During normal aging, however, the gland usually grows larger. This enlargement with aging is called benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH), but this condition is not associated with prostate cancer.

Both BPH and prostate cancer, however, can cause similar problems in older men. For example, an enlarged prostate gland can squeeze or impinge on the outlet of the bladder or the urethra, leading to difficulty with urination.

The resulting symptoms commonly include slowing of the urinary stream and urinating more frequently, particularly at night.

What is prostate cancer?

Prostate cancer is a malignant (cancerous) tumor (growth) that consists of cells from the prostate gland. The tumor usually grows slowly and remains confined to the gland for many years.

During this time, the tumor produces little or no symptoms or outward signs (abnormalities on physical examination). As the cancer advances, however, it can spread beyond the prostate into the surrounding tissues (local spread). Moreover, the cancer also can metastasize (spread even farther) throughout other areas of the body, such as the bones, lungs, and liver.

Symptoms and signs, therefore, are more often associated with advanced prostate cancer.

Why is prostate cancer important?

Prostate cancer is the most common malignancy in American men and the second leading cause of deaths from cancer, after lung cancer.

Most experts in this field, therefore, recommend that beginning at age 40, all men should undergo yearly screening for prostate cancer.

What causes prostate cancer?

The cause of prostate cancer is unknown, but the cancer is thought not to be related to benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH). The risk (predisposing) factors for prostate cancer include advancing age, genetics (heredity), hormonal influences, and such environmental factors as toxins, chemicals, and industrial products.

The chances of developing prostate cancer increase with age. Thus, prostate cancer under age 40 is extremely rare, while it is common in men older than 80 years of age. As a matter of fact, some studies have suggested that among men over 80, between 50 and 80% of them may have prostate cancer!

Genetics (heredity), as just mentioned, plays a role in the risk of developing a prostate cancer. For example, black American men have a higher risk of getting prostate cancer than do Japanese or white American men. Environment, diet, and other unknown factors, however, can modify such genetic predispositions.

For example, prostate cancer is uncommon in Japanese men living in their native Japan. However, when these men move to the United States, their incidence of prostate cancer rises significantly. Prostate cancer is also more common among family members of individuals with prostate cancer. Thus, a person whose father, grandfather, or even uncle has prostate cancer is at an increased risk for also developing prostate cancer.

To date, however, no specific prostate cancer gene has been identified and verified. (Genes, which are situated on chromosomes within the nucleus of cells, are the chemical compounds that determine specific traits in individuals.)

Testosterone, the male hormone, directly stimulates the growth of both normal prostate tissue and prostate cancer cells. Not surprisingly, therefore, this hormone is thought to be involved in the development and growth of prostate cancer. The important implication of the role of this hormone is that decreasing the level of testosterone should be (and usually is) effective in inhibiting the growth of prostate cancer.

Environmental factors, such as cigarette smoking and diets that are high in saturated fat, seem to increase the risk of prostate cancer. Additional substances or toxins in the environment or from industrial sources might also promote the development of prostate cancer, but these have not yet been clearly identified.

What are the symptoms of prostate cancer?

In the early stages, prostate cancer often causes no symptoms for many years. As a matter of fact, these cancers frequently are first detected by an abnormality on a blood test (the PSA, discussed below) or as a hard nodule (lump) in the prostate gland. Usually, the doctor first feels the nodule during a routine digital (done with the finger) rectal examination.

The prostate gland is located immediately in front of the rectum. As the cancer enlarges and presses on the urethra, the flow of urine diminishes and urination becomes more difficult. Patients may also experience burning with urination or blood in the urine. As the tumor continues to grow, it can completely block the flow of urine, resulting in a painfully obstructed and enlarged urinary bladder.

In the later stages, prostate cancer can spread locally into the surrounding tissue or the nearby lymph nodes, called the pelvic nodes. The cancer then can spread even farther (metastasize) to other areas of the body. The doctor on a rectal examination can sometimes detect local spread into the surrounding tissues.

That is, the physician can feel a hard, fixed (not moveable) tumor extending from and beyond the gland. Prostate cancer usually metastasizes first to the lower spine or the pelvic bones (the bones connecting the lower spine to the hips), thereby causing back or pelvic pain. The cancer can then spread to the liver and lungs. Metastases (areas to which the cancer has spread) to the liver can cause pain in the abdomen and jaundice (yellow color of the skin) in rare instances. Metastases to the lungs can cause chest pain and coughing.

What are the screening tests for prostate cancer?

Screening tests are those that are done at regular intervals to detect a disease such as prostate cancer at an early stage. If the result of a screening test is normal, the disease is presumed not to be present. If a screening test is abnormal, the disease is then suspected to be present, and further tests usually are needed to confirm the suspicion (that is, to make the diagnosis definitively).

Prostate cancer usually is suspected initially because of an abnormality of one or both of the two screening tests that are used to detect prostate cancer. These screening tests are a digital rectal examination and a blood test called the prostate specific antigen (PSA).

In the digital rectal examination; the doctor feels (palpates) the prostate gland with his gloved index finger in the rectum to detect abnormalities of the gland. Thus, a lump, irregularity, or hardness felt on the surface of the gland is a finding that is suspicious for prostate cancer. Accordingly, doctors usually recommend doing a digital rectal examination annually in men age 40 and over.

The PSA test is a simple, reproducible, and accurate blood test. It is used to detect a protein (the prostate specific antigen) that is released from the prostate gland into the blood. Most importantly, the level of the PSA is usually higher in people with prostate cancer than in people without the cancer. The PSA, therefore, is valuable as a screening test for prostate cancer. Accordingly, doctors usually recommend doing a PSA annually in men age 50 and over.

Furthermore, for men who have high risks for prostate cancer as discussed above, most doctors recommend starting the PSA screening at an even younger age (for example, at age 40).

Results of the PSA test under 4 nanograms per milliliter of blood are generally considered normal. (See the next two sections on false-positive elevations of the PSA and on refinements in the PSA test.) Results between 4 and 10 are considered borderline. These borderline values are interpreted in the context of the patient’s age, symptoms, signs, family history, and changes in the PSA levels over time.

Results higher than 10 are considered abnormal, suggesting the possibility of prostate cancer. The higher the PSA value, the more likely is the diagnosis of prostate cancer. Moreover, the level of PSA tends to increase when the cancer has progressed from organ-confined prostate cancer to local spread to distant (metastatic) spread. Very high values, such as 30 or 40 and over, are usually caused by prostate cancer.

More to come (Insha’Allah)

Colloidal Silver – The Rediscovery of a Super Antibiotic?
Colloidal silver appears to be a powerful, natural antibiotic and preventative against infections.
How It Works
The presence of colloidal silver near a virus, fungus, bacterium or any other single celled pathogen disables its oxygen metabolism enzyme, its chemical lung, so to say. Within a few minutes, the pathogen suffocates and dies, and is cleared out of the body by the immune, lymphatic and elimination systems. Unlike pharmaceutical antibiotics, which destroy beneficial enzymes, colloidal silver leaves these tissue-cell enzymes intact, as they are radically different from the enzymes of primitive single-celled life. Thus colloidal silver is absolutely safe for humans, reptiles, plants and all multi-celled living matter.
Ingesting Colloidal Silver
Taken orally, the silver solution is absorbed from the mouth into the bloodstream, then transported quickly to the body cells. Swishing the solution under the tongue briefly before swallowing may result in faster absorption. In three to four days the silver may accumulate in the tissues sufficiently for benefits to begin. Colloidal silver is eliminated by the kidneys, lymph system and bowel after several weeks.
Chronic or Serious Conditions
1 teaspoon of 5 ppm. colloidal silver equals about 25 micrograms (mcg.) of silver. 1 – 4 teaspoons per day (25 – 100 mcg.) is generally considered to be a “nutritional amount” and is reported to be safe to use for extended periods of time. Amounts higher than this are generally considered “therapeutic amounts” and should only be used periodically.
In cases of illness, natural health practitioners have often recommended taking double or triple the “nutritional amount” for 30 to 45 days, then dropping down to a smaller maintenance dose. Amounts from 1 – 32 ounces per day have reportedly been used in acute conditions.
If your body is extremely ill or toxic, do not be in a hurry to clear up everything at once. If pathogens are killed off too quickly, the body’s five eliminatory channels (liver, kidneys, skin, lungs and bowel) may be temporarily overloaded, causing flu-like conditions, headache, extreme fatigue, dizziness, nausea or aching muscles. Ease off on the colloidal silver to a smaller amount and increase your distilled water intake. Regular bowel movements are a must in order to relieve the discomforts of detoxification. Resolve to reduce sugar and saturated fats from the diet, and exercise more. Given the opportunity, the body’s natural ability to heal may amaze you.
Topical Uses
Some have used colloidal silver in a nasal spray mister – to reach the sinuses and nasal passages. Spray bottles have been used for topical use on kitchen and bathroom surfaces, skin, sore throat, eyes, burns, etc. Colloidal silver is painless on cuts, abrasions, in open wounds, in the nostrils for a stuffy nose, and even in a baby’s eyes because, unlike some antiseptics, it does not destroy tissue cells. It’s excellent as an underarm deodorant, since most underarm odor is caused by bacteria breaking down substances released by the sweat glands!
Some Common Uses of Colloidal Silver
Natural health practitioners have for years recommended taking one tablespoon daily, for four days, to establish a level, then one teaspoon daily for maintenance (proportional to body weight for children). After six weeks, a pause of several weeks has also been recommended by some natural healing arts doctors. Also, colloidal silver can be applied directly to cuts, scrapes, and open sores, or on a bandage for warts. It can be applied on eczema, itches, acne or bug bites. To purify water, add one tablespoon per gallon, shake well and wait six minutes. Mixed this way, it’s tasteless. It is not an allopathic poison.
Veterinary and Garden Use
Colloidal silver has worked just as well on pets of all kinds. Used in proportion to body weight, it should bring the same results. In the garden, field or greenhouse, add enough to the water or soil – and the plants will do the rest.
Colloidal Silver in Advance of Illness?
When the possibility of germ exposure is higher, colloidal silver can be taken orally each day or applied topically when there is a skin problem. It’s like having a second defense system. The silver acts only as a catalyst and is stabilized. It is non-toxic, except to one-cell plants and animals, and is non-addicting. It also apparently kills parasites because they have a one cell egg stage in their reproductive cycle.
Older folks reportedly feel younger because their body energies are used for other uses than constantly fighting disease. Digestion has also been reportedly better. Medical research has shown that silver promotes more rapid healing, with less scar tissue, even in the case of severe burns. Successes have been reported in cases that previously have been given up by established doctors. Colloidal silver is tasteless and won’t sting even a baby’s eyes, and won’t upset your stomach.
More Than 650 Diseases Helped?
Colloidal silver has been reported to kill 650 micro-organisms, many of which are associated with human diseases. This does not automatically mean that taking colloidal silver will “cure” diseases “caused” by these germs. Colloidal silver only kills micro-organisms when they are in contact with it for a sufficient period of time.
The basic guideline that has been recommended for using colloidal silver is that it usually “works” if you can get a high enough concentration to the “affected area”. Some will want to experiment with “higher amounts” (such as 8 or more ounces at a time) to find out what it takes to accomplish this. Do not use colloidal silver if you are allergic to contact with silver metals, or if you notice any digestive upset after use.
The following is a partial list of the more than 650 diseases that colloidal silver has been reputed to be successful against: acne, AIDS (Reference 8), allergies, appendicitis, arthritis, athlete’s foot, bladder inflammation, blood parasites, blood poisoning, boils, burns, cancer (References 2, 4, 7), candida, cholera, colitis, conjunctivitis, cystitis, dermatitis, diabetes (Reference 1), dysentery, eczema, fibrositis, gastritis, gonorrhea, hay fever, herpes, impetigo, indigestion, keratitis, leprosy, leukemia, lupus, lymphangitis, Lyme disease, malaria, meningitis, neurasthenia, parasitic infections: viral, fungal and bacterial pneumonia, pleurisy, prostate, pruritus ani, psoriasis, purulent opthalmia, rhinitis, rheumatism, ringworm, scarlet fever, septic conditions of the eyes, ears, mouth, and throat, seborrhea, septicemia, shingles, skin cancer, staphylococcus and streptococcus infections, stomach flu, syphilis, thyroid, tuberculosis, tonsillitis, toxemia, trachoma, all forms of virus, warts, whooping cough, yeast infection, stomach ulcer, canine parovirus and other veterinary uses, and fungal and viral attacks on plants. Simply spray diluted silver on the leaves and add to the soil.

The last time The New York Times made a pronouncement about prostate matters, the paper failed to no

The last time The New York Times made a pronouncement about prostate matters, the paper failed to note that PSA tests are merely one means of proper treatment for men who may prove to have cancerous prostates. But there was never any remorse shown for this egregious and superficial treatment.

Now the so called gray lady — I would call it the distracted ghost of its former self — has produced a long article criticizing the good doctor who fortuitously removed my prostate last March 20, Dr. David Samadi.

CLICK HERE TO READ THE NEW YORK TIMES ARTICLE ON PROSTATE CANCER, FALSE HOPE, DR. SAMADI, MT. SINAI AND REPUTATION ADVERTISING SEE ALSO

You can draw your own conclusions. I merely point out that the paper made no attempt to determine the truth or falsehood of the reputation ad:

“David Samadi, has pioneered a minimally invasive approach that allows him to retain the highest cancer cure rates with the lowest risk of side effects.”

Had the New York Times dug a bit, they would discover that the above claim is accurate. There are other practitioners of this technique who get results that may be equal. There is general agreement that side effects are lessened with less invasive techniques. Robotic takes much less time than normal surgery and is indeed minimally invasive.

What I really want to do here is to explain in terms that convince me (as one who has been a patient of Dr. Samadi) why the above statement is not distorting reality.

My points:

I chose this option after carefully going through an optiimal sequence of events which any person should do. Since my PSA was a false positive, it took a simple rectal exam for my primary doctor to tell me to get the lump he found examined. Such exams are the KEY to prevention, a fact the Times has never indicated.

Next I got a biopsy. There is a way to read a biopsy that indicates what is called a Gleason Score. If it hits seven, you ought to consider one of three treatments. Watchful waiting when you simply monitor the progress of the disease. Even as a 72 year old (at the time) I rejected this out of hand. That method is basically a gamble on your longevity.

The second method is non-invasive. It involves extended radiation treatments which can be supplemented by what is called seeds — the implanting of hormones to shrink the prostate. The image I have of this was that I would spend the rest of my life walking around with a barbecued prostate inside me. I did not feature this option though its results are a toss up with invasive methods.

The third option was removal and I chose it precisely because it was NOT a normal operation which could take hours and which could have more side effects than the Samadi method. I went to the good doctor, told him what I thought, learned he had done this procedure on men older than I, and determined to go through with it.

Not so fast. He insisted I have a full medical checkup with my primary doctor, though I had just had one a few months before. I was deemed fit to be invaded.

Dear NY Times, if you are facing a major surgery don’t you think it is reassuring to believe that your MD is at the top of his field?

I will not describe the entire procedure except to say that I now feel massively better than I did walking around with a Gleason 7 inside me.

I think the NYTimes has never troubled to ask what might lead a person to choose minimally invasive surgery to rid the body of a prostate. Or even to say why a rectal exam trumps a PSA test.

Disclosures. My PSA is presently ZERO. I am exercising daily and am up to a half hiour at 2.4 mph. I have never received a nickel from Dr. Samadi. In fact, he owes me for my sagacious advice to him on how to set up a Twitter account. And finally, I do enjoy it when the NYTimes presents such a simple target.

While prostate cancer is a treatable disease, recent studies have suggested that many cases can be prevented so long as one makes an effort to stay healthy through proper diet and exercise. Thankfully, there are now supplements available that contain all of the necessary nutrients that the prostate needs to remain in good health.

As is the case with most forms of cancer, the key to effective treatment of prostate lies in early detection through a PSA test. The most frequent symptoms of cancer in the prostate are frequent urination and a weak urine flow. Because many men experience a more frequent need to urinate as they get older, these symptoms often go overlooked. Other symptoms of cancer include bloody or painful urination.

When it comes to prostate, the familiar adage that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure is particularly apt. Although there is no way to guarantee that one will never be diagnosed with the disease, there are a handful of easy changes that a person can make in their lifestyle that will significantly lower their risk. Maintaining a healthy weight has been shown to lower the chance of developing prostate cancer, as has adopting a diet that is low in fat. Read more

Courtesy of beingfed.wordpress.com)

The exam must be getting close, because I’ve cracked.

Today, Dr. Waters gave our final lectures in embryology, which covered the male and female reproductive systems. This is the last bit of new material we’ll learn before our big exam on Friday. As part of it, she occassionally shows diagrams and slides of embryos and asks us to identify parts. At the end of her first lecture, she then puts up the following picture:

(from onshuffle.wordpress.com)

”What is this?” she asked. Like everyone else, I stare intently for a full minute, trying to discern the structures, and I draw a blank.

“It’s a picture of the planet Venus!”

She’d shown a photo of the Venus de Milo at the beginning of the lecture, so she’d put that in as a closing slide. We all groan out of shame. Apparently I and many others cannot tell a planet apart from an embryo.

***

Truth be told, though, though there’s been a lot of info, it’s amazing how much we’ve absorbed. Take Dr. Waters’ lectures, for instance. At the end of her last lecture, she pulled up a diagram of an embryo, pointed to various parts and asked us which germ layer (endoderm, mesoderm or ectoderm) they came from. We got them all right.

But there’s an exam on the horizon, so now we need to review. And that meant that the rest of today was spent in various review sessions.

The first such session I went to was a TA-led Histology review of the male and female reproductive systems, where we went over what each part looks like under a microscope. To quiz us, then, they’ll put up an image, and they’ll ask us to identify it and explain why. Here are two questions and the actual responses.

“What is this?” “Active breast tissue.” “Why?” (Medium-length pause before response.) “…because it looks more full.”

“What is this?” “It’s prostate.” “Why?” “Because it looks like prostate! I don’t know! I just memorize the pictures!”

***

Then in the afternoon, there is another “Open Help in Gross Lab” session. This, you may recall, is the time when all the gross lab TAs and lecturers come in for two hours. Groups of students will huddle around one of these instructors, who will then go to various bodies, tag different structures on it and then quiz us.

Ellen the Magnificent is there, and she spends a little more time on physiology. If you want pure anatomy tag review, then Betsy (i.e. Dr. Ezerman) or Jean (i.e. Dr. Szilva) is the way to go. Traditionally, I’ve gone with Betsy. Today I try Jean, who is as perky and excitable as she has been throughout the entire course.

So we tag. There are always a few things you have to brush up on, but in general I feel stronger in anatomy than I ever have. We also ask questions about how they’ll want us to phrase various answers. For instance, one of the first rules we learned is that you always have to specify your answer as a ”nerve”, “bone”, “artery”, “vein”, “ligament” or other structure. If you put “internal pudendal” as an answer, you’re wrong, since the full answer is “internal pudendal artery”.

So someone asks this question after we correctly identify something as the portal vein: “Would you want us to say hepatic portal vein?” Jean replies, “That would be nice. But it’s Christmas! So we won’t be too picky.”

Another student then responds, “Can you tell Dr. Carson Cornbrooks that too? That way, I can just put ‘cell’ down for all the Histology questions.”

We’ll see how easy they go very soon, I suppose.

A natural compound blocks the effects of the male hormone testosterone, therefore aiding in the prevention of prostate cancer.

Medical researchers at the German Cancer Research Center, in Heidelberg, Germany have presented findings at the American Association for Cancer Research Frontiers in Cancer Prevention Research Conference.

The natural compound, xanthohumol, is derived from hops and belongs to the group of flavonoids that are found in many plants, fruit, vegetables and spices. Studies to date have shown that xanthohumol blocks the action of estrogen by binding to its receptor, which may lead to prevention of breast cancer.

The researchers examined whether xanthohumol might not only block the effects of the male hormone androgen. Researchers stimulated hormone-dependent prostate cancer cells with testosterone, which led to a massive secretion of prostate specific antigen (PSA). PSA is used for screening and early detection of prostate cancer in men. Cells were then treated with testosterone and xanthohumol and the effects were examined.

They found that xanthohumol inhibited its potential to stimulate the secretion of PSA and other hormone-dependent effects. Molecular modeling results showed that xanthohumol directly binds to the androgen receptor structure.

The researchers suggest that this compound may have beneficial effects in animals. When they measured the anti-androgenic potential of xanthohumol in rats, they found that although xanthohumol was not able to prevent an increase in prostate weight after testosterone treatment, it could reduce testosterone-increased seminal vesicle weight.

Data posted by the American Association for Critical Illness Insurance that tracks data and research on the three primary critical illnesses, cancer, heart attack and stroke.

This is a continuation of my posts about my trip to the mountains. Since my last post about my “Plain Cheese Pizza Theory” was such a hit, I figured it was ok to move onto something else.

We kept driving through the mountains and talked about a few other topics, one of which being family. We’ve shared a lot with each other. I told her about the history of cancer in my family; 2 uncles and my father were diagnosed with cancer but, thankfully, had any cancer removed. I’m not at the age where I have to worry about getting tested for it regularly yet, but I’m no spring chicken. So that turned to talk about me…

Her: So, are you getting tested?

Me: I’ve been thinking about it. I’m going to schedule a blood test.

Her: Well you need to do more than that. You need the “other” test.

Me: Girl…don’t go there.

Her (wagging her index finger in the air and smiling): You know what I mean…

Me: Say one more word, I’ll active my ejector set and shoot yo ass right into orbit….

It’s not going down like that. No way, no how. No prostate exam, no colonoscopy. Nothing going anywhere it shouldn’t for any reason.

I’ve honestly had nightmares about the “other” test, imagining a doctor with a super long Arsenio Hall index finger and a sinister “MUAAAHHHHH” laugh as he puts on his gloves. I’ve awoken in a sweat, tossing and turning in my sleep, dreaming I was butt ass naked, stomach down on a cold table, waiting to be…violated.

I’ve talked with my uncle about this before. He had the test. He told me he was put under and didn’t feel a thing. No one would ever know. But I’d know…and that’s one person too many.

What if I saw the doctor out one day while at a movie or on a dinner date? “Hey, how are you? Remember me? I had my finger in your rectum a few weeks ago, you know, just probing around. How’s the soup?”

I doubt the doctor would say that…but he could if he wanted to. He would have finger “knowledge” of me…in the biblical sense.

Just the thought of that makes me shiver.

If I have to choose between the doctor conducting an anal probe and death…well, dying doesn’t seem all that bad. When I leave this world, I won’t be able to take any of the awards I’ve won, the accolades I’ve received, or any money I’ve made. At least leave me my dignity.

Is my view on this a bit childish? Probably. If is foolish to risk my health and life over not wanting someone to put a tube up my behind? Yep. But I’m so against this it’s not even funny.

Everybody dies. The Grim Reaper comes for us all at one time or another. I want to leave this world with my head held high…and my hindquarters unexplored.

My family, friends, and loved ones may mourn my passing, but I’d want them to remember me as I was. They can put on my tombstone,

“Gone too soon…but no man ever had his finger in his ass.”

As a manly man who drinks a lot of coffee, I was pleased at this new report:

“Coffee has effects on insulin and glucose metabolism as well as sex hormone levels, all of which play a role in prostate cancer. It was plausible that there may be an association between coffee and prostate cancer,” said Kathryn M. Wilson, Ph.D., a postdoctoral fellow at the Channing Laboratory, Harvard Medical School and the Harvard School of Public Health.

In a prospective investigation, Wilson and colleagues found that men who drank the most coffee had a 60 percent lower risk of aggressive prostate cancer than men who did not drink any coffee. This is the first study of its kind to look at both overall risk of prostate cancer and risk of localized, advanced and lethal disease.

“Few studies have looked prospectively at this association, and none have looked at coffee and specific prostate cancer outcomes,” said Wilson. “We specifically looked at different types of prostate cancer, such as advanced vs. localized cancers or high-grade vs. low-grade cancers.”

Caffeine is actually not the key factor in this association, according to Wilson. The researchers are unsure which components of the beverage are most important, as coffee contains many biologically active compounds like antioxidants and minerals.

Time for me to make a pot.

Two months ago, my neighbour, Kevin Sharp, was in a sorry state. He had just been advised by his Urologist that his PSA was rising and was out of control and that hormone therapy was no longer appropriate. He recommended him to an Oncologist for Chemotherapy.

In the third of this series, I discussed how lactoferrins and bovine cartilage had helped me reach remission with my prostate cancer

I was so saddened by his plight, I talked him into delaying chemotherapy and I gave him my supplies of of these two natural supplements and urged him to give them a go. He took my advice and started taking them. A month later his PSA had risen from 75 to 104. Having discussed this with my mentor, Dianne Street, she pointed out that the instructions on the packet are for healthy people and that someone with cancer needs to take a higher dose. Kevin went from 400mg of Lactoferrin a day to 800mg and finally to 1200mg a day.

One month later and his PSA has dropped to 78. His doctor was totally surprised and told him to keep doing whatever it was that he had been doing (and is now interested in finding out more about this alternate treatment). Kevin is so excited and is looking forward to another test in a months time. This is just as exciting for me as Kevin was on no other treatment and it reinforces my belief that Lactoferrin helped bring about my remission.

Low Level Laser Therapy has been used by medical doctors in Europe for over thirty years and was FDA approved in the U.S. in 2002. The patients in the FDA study got better 60% faster.

The laser stimulates a structure within the cell, called the mitochondria, nicknamed the “powerhouse”, to produce more ATP, which is our molecular energy. So with more energy at the cell level the tissues heal faster.

Normally a laser treatment is $15-$30.00.

An ice massage is quick, free, easy to do, and it can provide significant pain relief for many types of pain. In a world of sophisticated medical care, a simple ice massage can still be one of the more effective, proven methods to treat a soreness.

Most episodes of pain are caused by muscle strain. Muscles can become inflamed and spasm, causing pain and significant stiffness.

While it sounds like a simple injury, a muscle strain can create a surprising amount of pain. In fact, this type of injury is one of the most common reasons people go to the emergency room. However, not much can be done for a strained muscle except for rest (e.g. for up to two days), pain relief medications, and ice and/or heat application.

How ice provides pain relief
Ice can help provide relief for back pain in a number of ways, including:

Ice application slows the inflammation and swelling that occurs after injury. Most pain is accompanied by some type of inflammation, and addressing the inflammation helps reduce the pain.

Numbs sore tissues (providing pain relief like a local anesthetic)

Slows the nerve impulses in the area, which interrupts the pain-spasm reaction between the nerves

Decreases tissue damage

Ice is most effective if it is applied soon after the injury occurs. The cold makes the veins in the tissue contract, reducing circulation. Once the cold is removed, the veins overcompensate and dilate and blood rushes into the area. The blood brings with it the necessary nutrients to allow the injured muscles, ligaments and tendons to heal.

As with all pain relief treatments, there are some cautions with ice. Never apply ice directly to the skin. Instead, be sure that there is a protective barrier between the ice and skin, such as a towel. Additionally, ice should also not be used for patients who have rheumatoid arthritis, Raynaud’s Syndrome, cold allergic conditions, paralysis, or areas of impaired sensation.
