Yes, that’s right; I’m a cyclist.

That’s it, I’ve said it now.

Is there anything so terrible about it? What a thing to say… of course there is. I am a bastard. Clogging up the sides of roads. Feigning the vehicular right to travel upon the very same tarmac as the many righteous cars, vans and lorries of our great nation. I am a complete wretch. But the damage has been done now. What’s the use in trying to justify my case? I feel punctured – all of my life and vitality has escaped me. I have buckled, I cannot go on any longer.

But why exactly? It seems almost indefinable, in a sense. Well, for starters, any everyday activity which requires the donning of a protective helmet should be considered subversive and untrustworthy. I think that’s it. There’s something the populace does not trust in cyclists. Who needs to travel at such a pace but chooses not to drive, or catch a bus, or train? The lack of number plate, official documentation, public acknowledgement… There’s a sort of fugitive feel to it. This must be the reason.

No, I certainly shan’t be defending my plight as a clandestine cyclist. No. Why should I? There’s nothing to defend. Once people know… There’s no saving you. Openly admitting to being a cyclist is the ‘mode of transport’ equivalent to revealing you are a communist, a serial killer, or a Justin Bieber fanatic. There’s just no redemption for you.

And so I shall revel in it. I’ll bask shamefacedly in my helmet bearing notoriety. I don’t care.

I’m off the chain. I can handle whatever you throw at me. I am more than geared up for it.

It’s not uncommon to be hated as a cyclist, by pedestrians and drivers alike. Many ramblers will accumulate a sizeable hunk of phlegm, right from the pit of their unremarkable stomachs, just to hurl in your general direction as you whizz unassumingly past their pre-historically journeyed self. I am unsure whether this is borne out of an absolute hatred for the two-wheeled traveller, or of some deeply sewn lament for their lack of an environmentally friendly, energy efficient, cost effective get-around.

Drivers too, bear a similar, visceral repugnance for we, the cyclists. The missile of the civilian, the aerodynamic blob of bile, is not an uncommon warhead to be launched from car windows at the passing of a cyclist. There is a new possibility too, with the benefit of an arsenal of miscellany at hand in a vehicle. Newspapers, tennis balls, Atlas’s, rear-view mirrors, manuals – near enough anything can be slung from the window, from point blank range, causing the hilarious yet often fatal scuppering of a cyclists balance, stability and structural integrity.

When the drivers are all out of make-shift missiles to forcefully dismount the cyclist from the bicycle, they will often simply veer their motorised metal-box into the path of the peddler. They jerk the nose of the vehicle into the immediate vicinity of the cyclist, resulting in a purge of the bicycler from the bicycle, in a sort of ejector seat fashion, right over the bonnet of the car, to land in a high-visibilty heap on the road.

And why not? We do get in the way, somewhat.
