It happened once again last night. A coaching conversation was going nowhere.

Coaches are not magicians. They work in tandem with their coachees, in order to help make a difference. Sometimes, you come across a situation, where the coachee is just stuck. And so are you.

Not an easy situation, and not a palatable one either. Most of us like to be able to help, to make a difference. It is frustrating when we are unable to. We want to see progress. When given a problem, we all want to find our way out of it with a solution.

But sometimes, there isn’t an immediate way out that’s visible. In life in general, and as a coach.

No matter what I tried last night, whether it was asking perspective widening questions, or in challenging a belief or context, nothing seemed to work with my coachee.

So we decided to do something else, for the first time in the coaching assignment. We decided to do nothing.

It happens. And when it does, it is important for coach and coachee to realize that we are at an impasse, and the best option at such times, is to postpone, is to take a break.

So we decided mutually to “sleep on it”.

Sleep on it is a powerful coaching intervention. It calls for a pause between the coach and the coachee. It puts the issue on the hold – in the conscious domain – the sub-conscious continues to work.

Sleep on it also ensures that you back away from the emotional seething or dullness of the moment. The break helps calm down or re-energize.

Image via Wikipedia

So my suggestion…sometimes, as a coach, or a parent, or a manager…do nothing. Take a break. Sleep on it.

I was not surprised, when the next evening she called me to share that she had “got it”.

More often than not, the new day will bring new thoughts and breakthroughs. Try it.

My ending should be your beginning. BKS Iyengar Last week, the 2009 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Med

My ending should be your beginning.

BKS Iyengar

Last week, the 2009 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine went to Elizabeth H. Blackburn, Carol W. Greider and Jack W. Szostak. A friend of mine was the first postdoc of Greider’s first postdoc. When Greider won the Nobel Prize, it polished her academic pedigree. She’s now the “grandstudent” of a Nobel Prize winner.

This made me think about my “degrees of separation” from BKS Iyengar. My current main teacher regularly studies with Geeta, Prashant, and BKS Iyengar himself. Unless I immediately apply to study at RIMYI in Pune, I will never witness Mr Iyengar (who will turn 91 this December) with my own eyes.

But am I at least a grandstudent of Mr Iyengar?

Well, PhDs and postdocs are much rarer than yoga students. Landing a prestigious postdoctoral research position is extremely competitive, and the relationship between mentor and protege is direct and often intense. Such influential relationships can and do exist between yoga teachers and students, but nowadays, with crowded classes and traveling teachers, they are uncommon. If students pursue advanced studies with a selective teacher (who accepts a limited number of trainees), there’s more potential for a mentor-protege type of relationship.

Still, if any teacher-student relationship continues for five, 10, or 20 years, it does become significant. Students don’t flat-out ask, “Can I be your student?” but long relationships speak for themselves: if there’s no chemistry, no compatibility, people move on.

For any degree of “transmission” to occur between generations of teachers, there is much responsibility on teachers—and also on students. Attending class and doing your homework are givens. But the best students also benefit the teacher: they bring new ideas, they challenge the status quo, they push the teacher to clarify her own ideas, they energize the class. Heck, they might simply amuse the teacher with humor, wit, and cheer.

Being an engaged student takes work, but my teacher reminds us that we should take advantage of our teachers: ask questions, volunteer for class demos, eke the most out of that $15 or $20 class. “Squeeze your teachers,” she advises—and she got that advice from one of her own teachers.

To consider myself a grandstudent of BKS Iyengar would be a leap. The grandstudent of a Nobel Prize winner shouldn’t mention it if she’s lagged in her own achievements. That would be empty self-promotion. Similarly, a yoga student should not brag about her teachers and their lineages if she has not proven herself worthy.

edu.stanford.smi.protegex.owl.swrl.bridge.jess

“Lost Boys: Reign of Frogs”
a review by Darby O’Gill

For some reason this is the true sequel to the classic Joel Schumacher film, The Lost Boys. But, why make it a movie when you can just release it as a four issue comic book series instead? I would have to guess that the answer to that question has something to do with the two Coreys. Seeing how Corey Haim was such a mess during the filming of Lost Boys: The Tribe, they couldn’t use any of his footage in the film at all. So, Lost Boys: Reign of Frogs is the prequel to Lost Boys: The Tribe, but I think it’s the one that should have been filmed.

The story in Lost Boys: Reign of Frogs mostly takes place in 1990, but this is mainly due to being told through flashbacks of what became of the Frog brothers after the first movie. Edgar Frog tells a young protégé his tale at his surfboard shaping shop. Yes, even in this story we have to deal with the bullshit surfer storyline, but it’s easy to block out. Shortly after the events from the The Lost Boys, the Frog brothers become the go to vampire hunters, as more covens popup around the country. They’re even hired by the White House to deal with blood sucking politicians in Washington D.C., but upon their return home are faced with the return of David, the vampire played by Kiefer Sutherland in the first film, who is still looking for Michael and Star. The Frog’s quickly realize that if David is alive they must not have killed the head vampire after all. With this realization the boys team back up with Sam Emerson to kill Santa Carla’s head vampire once and for all. With a nice little twist, that will put the Frog brothers against one another in a future storyline. This story maybe hokey, but is so much better than that of the Lost Boys: The Tribe story, and who knows maybe this is the story we would have gotten had the Haim disaster not happened. We’ll never know.

The artwork in these books, by Joel Gomez, is really quite well done. My only problem with it is that the books where put out by DC Comic’s Wildstorm division, and authorized by Warner Bros., who owns of the original film rights; but Gomez’s drawings didn’t truly resemble the characters from the film. I would have just liked the characters to have been a little bit more familiar. Over all it was a fun read and was definitely a nice palate cleanser to the shitty film I had just sat through. If you did heed my review of Lost Boys: The Tribe, this should help ease the pain.

Rating:

Josh “Josh” is the story about a student, Satya (Naga Chaitanya) who comes to Hyderabad

Josh

“Josh” is the story about a student, Satya (Naga Chaitanya) who comes to Hyderabad from Vizag. He’s incensed by the reckless behaviour of some students in the city but somehow controls his anger. One day he witnesses a riot and files a complaint in the police station. This brings him face to face with a student leader JD (JD Chakravarthy) who’s nurturing his own ambition of entry into mainstream politics. The rest of the story is about how this confrontation between JD and Satya spawns a web of students, campus politics, youth and joshhh….

It’s preposterous to compare Nagarjuna and NagaChaitanya, even in terms of their debuts. Nagarjuna made his debut in 1986 in an era where the number of films made in an year were less and hence less competition. 23 years later, as NagaChaitanya makes his debut he already has a horde of contemporaries to compete against apart from the huge expectations from people in general. “Josh” is an extremely promising debut for Naga Chaitanya. Contrary to what some of us think about the film, I believe the film isn’t designed to showcase his dancing/fighting skills. The story penned by Vasu Verma expects its hero, Satya to be an angry young man, someone who’s equally sophisticated, smart and full of energy. Naga Chaitanya fits into his role with elan. Of course, there’s no denying the fact that we have no idea how his expressions would be if he tries to be not so serious all the time. There’s all the time in the world to experiment and “Josh” is an interesting way to what I believe would be a marathon for Naga Chaitanya. There’s nothing over the top about the film, Naga Chaitanya keeps his feet on the ground, he fights with only one person at a time, some of the veteran actors underplay their roles…just what you expect from a sensible movie.

On the other hand, not everything is not rosy about the film. The crux lies in Vasu Verma’s script which never lets some of the supporting roles to evolve completely. J D Chakravarthy’s role as a student leader should have been more menacing. We hardly see his “true colours” except in couple of scenes where he proves what he’s capable of. Karthika as Vidya, the love interest of Satya is affable in her role as a childish and utterly dumb girl next door. Despite all the signs of a neat friendship developing between the couple, their romance is hardly given any footage. Brahmanandam is completely wasted in the movie. If all these factors are kept aside, something else catches your attention. It’s the theme of the movie. You are expected to understand that “Youth Rockzzz…” on the poster means…”the hero alone rockzzz…”. Except for him, everyone else of his age are either dumb or have got their life completely messed up! The two guys who play the roles of student leaders in college are good but the whole premise of the immediate change in them looks inadequate. And most importantly, although the movie skims the surface of larger themes like role of youth, suicides, education system the entire story funnels down to hero redeeming himself from a dark past by showing the path of righteousness to others. Phew…not everyone can be a God!

Sameer Reddy’s cinematography is wonderful throughout the movie and he captures some of the best moments in the film like the skirmishes between the hero and his rivals with brilliance. Music by Sandeep Chowta is peppy but the lyrics hardly make an impact. Dil Raju, who has had an impeccable track record of producing some good films till date doesn’t disappoint this time too. His resolve to present a good film sans the “macho” element is commendable. The director of the movie, Vasu Varma also handles the script, dialogues and screenplay departments. The direction is pretty good in parts, like some of the scenes involving the gang wars but the screenplay suffers a major jolt when the script gets entangled in multiple themes.

“Josh” is definitely a brave attempt for a debutant, who’s also a star kid! Naga Chaitanya has an alarming screen presence like his father and I think he has had one of the most sensible debuts in the recent few years…you certainly can’t expect a masterpiece from the first film!

P.S: I found traces of these movies/ads in “Josh”

1. 10 Things I hate about you (Principal asking another word for “Friend” to write her novel)

2. Amelie (pure coincidence) (The scene where hero disconnects the cable connection)

3. Limca Ad featuring Sushma Reddy (Hero-Heroine in a song…running everywhere trying to escape from water being splashed all over them)

“Coaching is for professionals”, “I am not qualified to coach”, “So much work – who has the time to

“Coaching is for professionals”, “I am not qualified to coach”, “So much work – who has the time to coach?”, “I rather tell my team what to do rather than do this time consuming coaching bit”.

Heard these before? Sounds familiar?

The Times of India Ascent (September 2, 2009) front page story on mentorship and coaching highlighted how senior leaders have learnt and shared knowledge during their careers. Quite inspiring.

Surprisingly, a recent study by BlessingWhite paints a different picture on coaching.

Called the Coaching Conundrum 2009, it draws from research that reflects interviews with 60 HR and line leaders, survey responses of 2,041 individuals in North America, Asia, and Europe, and analysis of coaching profile assessments for more than 8,000 managers.

Hue and cry

Some of the findings stand out for me, that is, when I relate it to organizations I have worked for and how internal communicators can leverage it for building a growth culture.

a) Most managers love to coach, and most employees like to be coached but only 1 in 2 survey respondents in North America and Asia receive coaching

b) Managers who coach regularly describe tangible benefits (e.g., increased team productivity) and 2/3rds of employees who receive coaching say it improved their satisfaction and performance

c) Organizations and managers talk a lot about coaching skills and processes but a trusting, supportive relationship appears to be the most important ingredient in effective coaching.

It is important to understand the difference between mentorship and coaching before we can embark on how these tools can be build into your organization’s DNA, if not already so.

Mentorship refers to a developmental relationship in which a more experienced or more knowledgeable person helps a less experienced or less knowledgeable person –who can be referred to as a protégé, or apprentice — to develop in a specified capacity.

While Coaching is a method of directing, instructing and training a person or group of people, with the aim to achieve some goal or develop specific skills. Not to be confused with ‘supervising’ which is defined as ‘to have the charge and direction of’.

In the realm of organizations, a coaching culture is easier to build than mentorship and more tangible.

So does one need to be formally trained to be a coach or can you begin coaching anyone, anytime?

I think the latter holds good. There isn’t a reason to wait since you don’t need any specific infrastructure to begin. Before you begin though, you need to understand your objectives.

Are you hoping to grow your employees? Do you think you can create capability in your team?

Can you free bandwidth to take up strategic roles? Is there a something you want your team to unlearn? How can you see your team successful? Have you seen a best practice that can be imbibed by your employees?

So how can you begin and build it into your organization’s culture? What is the relevance of it for internal communicators?

It does not matter if your organization is a private or a public enterprise, a college or a start-up, I believe the opportunities to coach your immediate team members, your peers or other colleagues exist. As internal communicators, you can help your team look at approaches freshly, revise the way communication is perceived or created and build specific skills and competencies. By practicing coaching, internal communicators can also step up as ‘ambassadors’ and demonstrate value to senior leadership. In internal communication teams specifically in India, I know this is much needed.

Build from a position of strength: To start, it is important to be viewed as a credible resource and someone who is established as a ‘leader’. ‘Leader’ in this context is not someone with authority but someone who ‘gains the respect’ by adding tangible value over time.

Identify coaching opportunities: Understand that each member of your team brings certain strengths and growth areas and it is vital to identity where you can play a pivotal role. It can be something as simple as helping a person to write effective e-mails. Or, how to improve visibility among stakeholders.

Demonstrate value: Remember that coaching does take effort. Be sure of how much time you can commit but once you identify that chunk of mind space, spend them judiciously. Have a plan to define goals, outcomes and milestones. Give feedback often and directly. Link it to performance and benefits. Help your ‘coachee’ see results.

Popularize coaching success stories: Are you aware of senior leaders in your organization who exhibit coaching prowess? Can you make them your ambassadors? Create podcasts and news articles based on their insights and experiences. Encourage them to share their perspectives on what worked and what does not.

Outline guidelines: Prepare from your experience templates and ‘cheat sheets’ which can help others run their own coaching programs. It can be simple ‘notes capture templates’, ‘plan definition’ charts or even simple ‘feedback forms’ to collate inputs.

Assess changes: It is in your interest to ensure the success of your coachee. Find out obstacles which are coming in the way, give them inputs on overcoming them. Not ‘overcoming’ them on their behalf! That is a trap coaches often fall into in our enthusiasm to achieve our goals. Conduct a survey to ascertain quantifiable value.

Communicate wins: Share progress with other stakeholders so that the ‘coachee’ knows how much distance got covered. By communicating regularly, I am hopeful you can build a culture where coaching is embedded into the organization’s thinking.

Keen to try coaching from today? It’s worth the effort to try to make this happen. Give it a shot and I am sure you will see results emerge from your effort.
