Glad to have Ron plugged in and contributing. I was privileged to experience his hospitality recently and to enjoy a conversation between us two preacher-types.

Today’s header: if you know who’s birthday it is today (supposedly), you might get what the pic represents. Comic book version. I won’t be changing the header pic every day, though, so don’t get used to it.

Proverbs 28:17 impressed me last night: “If one is burdened with the blood of another, he will be a fugitive until death; let no one help him” (ESV). That last phrase is frightening. Some actions put people beyond the pale. I pray I never pass the point of no help.

Today on the Daily Nudge, seen only by the Fellows, I ask their favorite Bible verse and the reason behind it. Prov. 28:17 isn’t mine, by the way.

As we explore chapter six, like the other chapters, we see that it is full of information. The first thing discussed is that Jesus is Lord of the Sabbath. He points out that the Sabbath was not made for God’s benefit, but for man’s. The Pharisees had turned the Sabbath into a legally required observance…and had so codified what it meant to observe the Sabbath, that they would not approve of even healing a man on the Sabbath. Jesus assaults the underlying premise of their convictions.

In vv.12-19, Luke records the names of the 12 that Jesus called.

In vv.20-38, Jesus again addresses the underlying assumptions of the Pharisees and, by implication, the culture as a whole. He tells His hearers to live for the eternal…not the temporal. Whether we live for the “now” or the “future,” or actions affect the other.

VV.39 ff speak of being sincere and how one can determine who a man is at the core. Each man bears fruit consistent with heart condition. This being the case, each of us should focus on our heart and allow the fruit to manifest, as opposed to focusing on the fruit itself. The fruit is the easiest to evaluate and the easiest to manipulate. The heart though…is the standard that God measures.

Proverbs 28:1 is the takeaway today. “The wicked flee when no one is pursuing, but the righteous are bold as a lion.” True boldness rises up from knowing you are living righteously and that God is ones defender.

Day 65:  Today, wisdom is given a voice to speak to anyone who will listen.  If you didn’t read Day 63, please do so before reading today’s as it sets the foundation for Proverbs.

Proverbs:  Wisdom cries out in the streets; shouts to those in the public square; and speaks to those on busy streets and entrances to the city.  She cries, “You simple ones, how long will you continue your simple ways?  You scoffers, will you always continue your mockery?  You fools, will you hate knowledge forever?

If you listen to my reproof, I will pour out my heart to you and make wisdom known to you.  But you won’t listen and have rejected my pleadings.  You ignored my counsel and did not want my reproof.

When trouble comes, I will laugh.  I will mock you when calamity strikes and overtakes you like a storm; when disaster sweeps over you like a whirlwind; and when distress and trouble overwhelm you.”  Proverbs 1:20-27

Thoughts/questions: Like an animated movie, imagine Wisdom moving about and trying to persuade anyone and everyone of its worth and warning of dire consequences if rejected.  Without one line in this quote, Wisdom’s warnings would be extremely negative and discouraging.  However, that one line makes all the difference! 

If you listen to my reproof, I will pour out my heart to you and make wisdom known to you.  God desires to pour out His heart to us!  He yearns to give us wisdom!  All we have to do is listen. Now remember what ‘listen’ means – it means what you’ve meant when you said to your kid (or your parent said to you), ‘Listen to me?’  Your ‘listen’ did not simply mean ‘to hear’, it meant ‘to hear, understand, and apply’. 

My prayer is that Proverbs and each God2me devotion helps you to ‘listen’.  Be committed to hear, understand, and apply!!!!!

Luke 5 details calling of 5 disciples and performing some miracles. In vv.1-11, we find Jesus teaching on the shore of the Sea of Galilee (Genneseret). He borrow SImon’s boat to push back from the shore a bit. (This allowed for better accoustics). Then Jesus tells Simon to let down the nets for a catch.

NOTE: Now it is one thing for Jesus to corner the “God angle,” but for Him to tell Simon (a commercial fisherman) how to fish…well, that might be a bit much. Many times we rationalize that what Jesus says to do doesn’t apply to us because our circumstances are different. After all, we know our circumstances better than Him right? Who is He to give instructions that we know are ridiculous and irrational…unnecessary and illogical. Well, He is Jesus. So, Simon obeys (v.5) and the catch was more than two boats could handle. At that point, Simon and the others confessed their sinfulness, responded to Jesus’ invitation to follow Him, left their boats and nets, and pursued Jesus without reservation. Do you ever wonder how many people told them they were nuts…even Simon’s wife?

The story of the leper in vv.12-14 is a great picture of Jesus’ character. The leper came to Him and stated that he had faith that Jesus could heal him if He was willing. Jesus stated that He was willing and then did the unimaginable…He touched this unclean man. Immediately, the man was healed. This is exactly how we relate to a Holy God. We are unclean in our sins, but Jesus is willing that we would be cleansed…so He touches us and makes us clean. He then sent the former leper to the priest according to the Mosaic Law as a “testimony” to them.

The next story is of Jesus healing the paralytic who was lowered through a roof to him. Jeuss saw the faith of those who brought the paralyzed man (v.20) and He pronounced forgiveness and healed the man. It was their faith that prompted this encounter. NOTE: I wonder what would be possible if Jesus saw “our faith” in bringing those who were ingnorant or unable to get to Him…what might He do even today? What if we claimed a community for Christ…or a people group in Africa or Asia….would Jesus see our faith and heal them?

In vv.27-32, we find the discussion of the calling of Levi. He was an outcast in the Jewish culture, yet Jesus called him. Levi threw a party with all of his lost friends. He was now saved and wanted to celebrate it. The Pharisees, of course, rejected this…but Jesus stated that He came to win the sick, not those who did not have need for a healer (v.32).

In vv.33-39, Jesus alludes to why He is not a “reformer” of Judaism, but is the inauguration of a new era in history. No one ruins a new garment to put a patch on an old garment (v.36), and no one puts something new (wine) into something old (wineskin)…otherwise both are lost. New wine goes into new winskin…and this new era is for those who can receive it. FOr some though…the old is good enough…and they reject the new out of hand (v.39), because they are intoxicated by the old.

Proverbs 27:22 is the takeaway today. “Though you pound a fool in a mortar with a pestle with crushed grain, yet his foolishness will not depart from him.” Foolishness runs deep. You cannot crush it out of a man. He is foolish to the core. His only (and best) hope is a life transforming experience with Jesus.

It has been a trying couple of weeks. I’ve been assaulted by all manner of strange philosophies and ideologies that claim Christ as their core, and yet they seem as far from Christ as possible. As one who associates with a certain subculture, I find it so frustrating to see self-professing Christians use awkwardly interpreted Scriptures to justify their actions and associations, and then stop there. As if they want to move forward in their hobbies and interests and pull the Christian card only when it’s convenient.

As a Side Note: Let me just say this, if you have to search the Scriptures for some loophole to justify whatever it is that you are doing, perhaps you shouldn’t be doing it. I have seen people search for loopholes to justify tattoos, piercings, clothing styles, listening to certain types of music, having a drink of alcohol, smoking, or whatever else it may be that they desire to do. If you are fighting your conscience on a matter, let your conscience win because how much greater is God than your own conscience? Tattoos, piercings, etc. (I’m picking on those because they are the silliest matters I’ve seen addressed) are not for everybody. If you are starting to feel a pang of guilt for considering that cool tattoo you want to get, don’t get it. It might not be for you at the moment, or it may not be for you at all.

What part of LORD do we not understand? Are we not to present our bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is our spiritual worship? Do we not know that we are not our own, for we were bought at a price? It as if we are more concerned with being our own unique individual self, than we are about denying ourselves, taking up our cross daily, and following the Lord Jesus Christ who redeemed us with His Blood on Calvary.

Lord, help us. We are so weak, and we are so feeble.

Over the past few weeks I have listened to a man who is more interested in gathering disciples for himself, and convincing others that he has the right answers, than he is in seeking the Scriptures and giving his life over to God. A man who wants so much to be some grand spiritual leader, and yet his fruit bears witness to the spiritual death that is inside of him. And he is so enchanted by his own self grandeur, in love with his idols of education and antiquity, that I can’t help but to be reminded of the Word which says:

And it hurts because we’ve had this conversation, we’ve been down this trail, and that tree looks all too familiar.

Somehow, it seems that Christ isn’t important or exciting anymore. That He has somehow bored us, and now we have to dress Him up in the latest fashions just to keep Him relevant and inviting to ourselves and to the culture around us. It is absolutely ridiculous the idolatry that we have found ourselves in. And more and more as I see the culture around me, and Christians who look more like the culture around me than they do Christ, I’m starting to wonder where did it all go wrong.

When did Christ become not enough? When did the cries of Sola Scriptura, Sola Fide, Sola Gratia, Solus Christus, and Soli Deo Gloria become so offensive and trite that we simply let them fade away? It seems now, that what matters most is that we be inviting and welcoming with a message that reaches out to the community, and -as far as I have seen- more often than not, that message is a watered down gospel cluttered with all manner of gimmicks and funny jokes to make it entertaining and look attractive to a dying world that revels in its own decay.

THE GOSPEL IS AN OFFENSE to those that are perishing. THE CROSS IS AN OFFENSE to those that deny Christ as Lord and Savior. Watering down the gospel, or smoothing off the rough edges of the cross (to paraphrase C. H. Spurgeon), is to rob God. Are we somehow more loving and more wise than our Father in Heaven that we try to take the offense out of that which is incredibly offensive?

Man is wicked and at enmity with God. Man is on a fast lane speeding towards Hell with a smile on his face. Man is making merry to eternal damnation, and unless we tell him how offensive and heinous his sin is to God, and what Christ has done that men might be saved, man will continue happily on his way to an eternity that stops in the full presence of God’s wrath.

I am fearful also, that there are a number of people who call themselves Christians, that have gone to church all their lives, that have done all the churchy things expected of them, who were at every Sunday service, and maybe at various midweek and home services, that will stand before God and hear those terrible words, “Depart from me, you worker of iniquity. I never knew you!” When our lives have no sign of change, when sin is of no importance to us, when holiness means nothing to us, when Christ is a subject we already know all about, when we live like the devil (to paraphrase Paul Washer) shouldn’t we be terrified?

How is your life any different now from before you knew Christ?

The Manhattan Declaration was encouraging, but I’m afraid it is not enough. Spurring us to act in regards to certain moral issues with a piece of paper signed by Christian and Christian-like religious leaders is heart breaking. Why should we be compelled to do that which we should have been doing from the beginning? Should it not be second nature for us to oppose the murder of unborn children? Should it not be second nature for us to oppose the various sexually immoral unions and encounters that we are being pressured into approving? Why does it take a piece of paper to get some of us to act? Why haven’t we already been taking to the streets with the GOSPEL!?

What makes our lives different from the unbelieving? Is there something that obviously sets us apart from the world around us beyond our words? Do our neighbors look at us and know something is different about our lives? Or are we simply content with putting on a t-shirt that says “Jesus” in a logo similar to that of a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup, instead of putting on Christ each and every day?

I am tired of lukewarm Christianity. I am tired of the “Have it Your Way” fast food gospel. I’m tired of churchianity and a church culture that denies Christ and promotes a life given to moralistic deism.

It is as if somehow our wisdom, our understanding, and our counsel are greater than God’s. Somehow we’ve become more intelligent, more gentle, more loving, and more peaceful than God. And this blasphemy is taking us, and the world, straight to Hell.

Lord, help us. We are weak, and we are feeble.
