To me, some of the most edifying verses in all of Scripture are found in Romans 8:28-39, where the apostle Paul talks about our victory over persecution, the forces of evil, and even death itself. For the faithful Christian, nothing can ever separate us from the love of God and Christ – a truly beautiful and inspiring section of Scripture.

Below is a guest post from a close friend of mine. This time last year he was involved in a pretty serious car accident, but walked away with just an injured hand. I thought his testimony was perfect for the Thanksgiving season so I asked him if he would mind if I shared it with all of you. It’s completely unedited with the exception of the post title which I provided.

Be blessed on this Thanksgiving holiday, and be thankful for the testimony you’ve been given. – @W

I just want to take a second to praise God for all of the blessings we all enjoy in the midst of whatever we’re complaining about.

Today is the one year anniversary of the car accident that should have caused me alot more “discomfort” (I use that word lightly) than it did. A year later, I still feel residuals (physically and emotionally), but for the most part, I’m just as healthy as I was Nov 11th of last year. My wife and I lost our car that day, now we have a replacement. Thousands of $ worth of medical bills have been covered by insurance/legal recovery.

I don’t know all of the reasons God spared my life that day, but I’m guessing that at least one reason is so that I can share my testimony and give hope to others. (FYI, this week at church, we were informed that another guy went through a similar accident, but his car flipped 3 times. Still like me, he walked away with a broken hand).

I encourage any and all of you to also share your testimonies. We owe God that much at the very least for bringing us through them. Sharing our testimonies is one of the best ways to share God’s goodness with others. Not what He could or should do, but what He has already done.

God is still in the saving business.

Yesterday I was listening to a Christian radio station that was doing a fundraising campaign for gos

Yesterday I was listening to a Christian radio station that was doing a fundraising campaign for gospel missions around the country. They were challenging all of their listeners to “Give where you live” in order to support a local rescue mission in your town so they can supply the homeless with a Thanksgiving dinner. I love that they do this every year, AND I love the testimonies of the people who have been helped through this campaign in the past. I was sobbing listening to story after story of how missions had not only provided food and shelter for people who were facing hard times…but how they also saved peoples lives through God’s powerful spirit of love and grace.

I’ve talked before about how hard it has been to be on the receiving end of help for the past year. God has humbled me in places I didn’t even know I had, and I am better for it. To be honest…before we were pushed head first into the most trying season of our lives, in some twisted way, giving and helping the needy gave me a small sense of superiority. (OK I know that’s disgusting, but I’m just being honest.)

I have never had to go hungry, in fact the 20 extra pounds that ride passenger on my butt everyday are examples of just the opposite. I’ve always had a roof over my head and my children have always been safe and provided for. Praise Jesus! While I can’t identify with hunger pains and truly loosing everything…I can relate to feeling helpless in circumstances that are beyond my control. Have you ever judged people that have obviously been through the system – who may or may not work hard for a living – who may or may not be on welfare – who may or may not have many children with different fathers? A couple of months ago I was in a waiting room surrounded by people from all walks of life. I desperately wanted to scream “I don’t belong here!! I am not like these people!” But instead I had to fight back the tears as I heard God tell me, “Lindsay, you are no better than anyone in this room…I love them all…they are all mine.” I begged God for forgiveness and I have to say, I haven’t been the same since.

Yesterday on the radio one lady in particular stood out. She talked about how a couple of years ago she had been the recipient of a food basket from Hope for the Hungry. She explained how hard it was to not be able to afford to put meet in her freezer for her family and then how overwhelming it was to receive a huge basket of much needed food for Thanksgiving. Now, she has shared her testimony with her church and she was helping others in her community by handing out food baskets last night. She went on to say how everything she has is because of God and everything she is for His glory. (Her words were so much more beautiful and impacting.) As they wrapped up her segment the DJ’s came back with, “Well you can’t out give God.” Ahhhhh! I don’t even know what that means and I think we can all agree that corny Christian cliché’s are so last year!! Anyway, I will no longer look at the “needy” in judgement or with pity or as a charity cases … but I will identify with their hurts and fears with love and respect.

Thank you God for giving me perspective.

In light of Thanksgiving, I decided to make a list of 30 things/people/whatever I am thankful for – one for every day of the month of November (in random order). Some are serious; some are…not so serious.

I am thankful for…

Matthew – my best friend and incredible boyfriend – for always being there for me, for always laughing at my jokes (no matter how lame they are)and being silly with me, for always getting excited about the things I find exciting (even the seemingly unexciting things), and for countless other reasons.

Sweet, selfless prayers from a 9-year-old.

New friends and opportunities for fellowship.

Good health.

Central Baptist Church Hillsboro – for being such an integral part of my spiritual formation throughout jr. high, high school, and college.

Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection – because of him I am saved by grace through faith (Eph. 2:8).

Naps.

My dog, Tex – because he is the best dog in the world.

April 19, 1993 – the day my sweet Jesus saved me from myself.

Pastor Jamie – for tending to his little flock at FBCPO and for not being afraid to step on some toes, including mine.

Sheila & Steve Cochran – my “adopted WA parents,” who love me and take care of me here in WA.

Music - especially The Beatles, Coldplay, and Hanson.

Hannah – my roommate and friend – for “blessing” me (please excuse the inside joke).

22 years and 9 months of life. (Geez, I’m getting old!)

My car (as old and clunky as it is) – for getting me all the way to WA from TX with no problems.

My family – for loving and supporting me every step of the way, even when I move 2000 miles away from them.

ETBU – for my education and the life lessons it taught me throughout (and even after) the four years I was there.

God’s mercy and grace – that they are renewed daily.

Ice cream.

Youth Missions International – for giving me the opportunity to follow my calling and serve in the Northwest.

The library – for providing me with hours upon hours of free entertainment.

Weekends.

The Jarretts and The Cooks – Hannah’s family – for being awesome and for being great friends to me these last couple of years.

God’s faithful and unending provision.

First Baptist Church Port Orchard – for lovingly taking me in and making me a part of their family.

Kasie, Kenneth, and Kristen – for being the coolest siblings of all time. OF ALL TIME.

Mentors.

Babies – for their sweet innocence and fresh life.

The Venturas – Matthew’s family – for being my second family.

The Greening Family – for being my Texas buddies here in the Northwest.

I hope all of you have just as many reasons (and more) to be thankful.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!

“Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.” James 1:17

Suggested Scripture Reading: I Corinthians 12:1-11

Many times in life, we can be so caught up with the gift that we forget the Giver. We live in a land of abundance. Most of us do not want for anything. Throughout this land, God’s blessing upon us is evident everyday and is seen in all things. God has allowed our land to be fruitful with provisions above and beyond our expectations. Our land provides us with beauty and wonders which enable us to take pleasure in enjoying our creation through exploring, traveling and vacationing. This gives us the ability to be refreshed mentally, emotionally, physically and spiritually.

In His Word, God guarantees us that as we live in His land, it can be a land flowing with gifts of love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, kindness, and self control. What a prosperous land that awaits all who are in Christ. It is promised to those who have accepted the gift of Jesus Christ.

I would encourage all of us as we start each new day to begin by acknowledging and walking in thanksgiving to the “Gift Giver.” May we never let the gift shadow the Giver. Be encouraged to know that every good gift is heaven sent.

Encouragement: Look Around And See The Many Gifts God Has Given

I encourage you to look around and see the many gifts God has placed in your life. I would like to take this opportunity to thank God for each one of you. Each person God places in our paths is a gift to us. May we never take any gift for granted.

Yesterday is history,
Tomorrow is a mystery,
Today is a gift,
that is why it is called the present. (Author Unknown)

Besonders was Newsletter betrifft, sollten Sie sehr vorsichtig sein.

“Enter with the password ‘thank you’ make yourselves at home, talking praise, thank Him. Worship Hi

“Enter with the password ‘thank you’ make yourselves at home, talking praise, thank Him. Worship Him. For God is sheer beauty, all generous in love, loyal always and ever”( Psalms 100:4-5 The Message)

“The username and password entered do not match. Please enter correct username and password before proceeding”.

How many times have you seen that message, or one like it, splashed across your computer screen?

My mind races, it can’t be the username; I usually use the same one! It has to be the password, what password did I use when I set up this account? For the life of me I can’t remember. I enter one password after another, but none seems to be the right one. What was I thinking?

After some time I resort to the link just below the login box. “Forgot your password?” the helping hand most men avoid as a sign of utter failure. After all, are we that lame, we can’t remember the password WE created?

The next screen asks us to answer a couple of questions:

“What was your Mothers maiden name?” I don’t remember giving that information to this site! “What was the model of your first car?” Why do they care? I cover my sense of failure with sarcasms.

Finally, I get the message; “Your password was sent to the email on record.”

Today’s technology has provided a simple similitude. If we want to experience, or access, the knowledge, tools, pleasures, or relationships offered beyond where we are now, we must have the right password.

Just as passwords open sites in cyberspace, the password, thank you, opens doors for us in our spiritual walk.

The United States is one of only a few countries that have a holiday specifically for the purpose of saying thank you.

Given this emphasis, consider two of my recent experiences:

I stood holding the door as, one after another; the young ladies who made up the cheerleading team, their coaches, and chaperones, stepped off the bus they were traveling on, and passed through the open door into the restaurant ahead of me. Saying not a word, as they passed, they now stood in line, waiting to be seated. There were approximately 30 in the group.

After dinner, my wife and I crossed the street to do s little shopping at the local Target store. There I encountered a young father struggling to load a few 12 packs of soft drinks on his basket without getting too far from the baby resting in the basket. Seeing his struggle, I stepped in and helped by moving the products into his waiting basket as he stood silently and watched. He went on about his shopping as if nothing had happened.

Although not a scientific study, or even a good representative sample, these two incidents reflect a spreading insensitivity, on the part of persons in our western culture, to the need to acknowledge acts of kindness. We have forgotten our password, — thank you.

For the life of us we can’t figure out what it is. We want what is beyond the login screen of our spiritual life. We struggle to open the site with every material activity or gift we can think of, but we can’t think of the simple password.

If we continue to concentrate on our own self-interests, we will never know the wonders that wait beyond our present state.

Romans 15:1-7 gives us clear direction:

Those of us who are strong and able in the faith need to step in and lend a hand to those who falter, and not just do what is most convenient for us. Strength is for service, not status. Each one of us needs to look after the good of the people around us, asking ourselves, “How can I help?” That’s exactly what Jesus did. He didn’t make it easy for himself by avoiding people’s troubles, but waded right in and helped out. “I took on the troubles of the troubled,” is the way Scripture puts it. .Even if it was written in Scripture long ago, you can be sure it’s written for us. God wants the combination of his steady, constant calling and warm, personal counsel in Scripture to come to characterize us, keeping us alert for whatever he will do next. May our dependably steady and warmly personal God develop maturity in you so that you get along with each other as well as Jesus gets along with us all. Then we’ll be a choir – not our voices only, but our very lives singing in harmony in a stunning anthem to the God and Father of our Master Jesus! So reach out and welcome one another to God’s glory. Jesus did it; now you do it! (The Message)

As we celebrate our Thanksgiving, think about how we might live up to the charge of Romans 15. Don’t make it easy on ourselves, look inwardly and ask others, “How can I help?”; when someone, even a total stranger, serves us in some way, repay their kindness with acknowledgement.

Think about all the God of all creation has done for us. What sacrifice He made for us, His constant presence doting on children He adores. Acknowledge Him in everything.

We have the choice, we can be a single voiceless “taker” in this world, and remain forever locked in our present state with no hope of entering into something greater, or we can “join the choir – not our voices only, but our very lives singing in harmony in a stunning anthem.”

Remember your password – thank you.

En servicio como Padre

A power struggle for children – but everything comes from God (Genesis 30)

Leah (the older and less beautiful one) was less loved by Jacob and God saw this. He opened her womb and she borne many children. When Rachel saw this she was upset and gave her servants to Jacob, so that through them she was able to bear children for Jacob too. Throughout all this, Rachel was not able to bear any children by herself, until “God remembered Rachel; he listened to her and opened her womb” was she able to give birth to Joseph.

A struggle for sheep – but everything comes from God (Genesis 30)

When Jacob wanted to leave his father-in-law Laban to his own homeland, Laban pleaded with him not to leave for he knew that his own blessings came from Jacob – the little he had have greatly increased under Jacob’s care. But Jacob insisted and Laban agreed to give him something as payments. When Jacob requested for the speckled/ spotted/ dark sheep of his flock as wages, Laban verbally agreed (since this represented a good deal for him as these sheep were rare) . However, that same day he removed all of these sheep from his flock and placed them under the care of his sons such that Jacob was only left with white sheep – he still wanted to cheat Jacob of what little wages he deserved!

Despite all these efforts, God’s blessings remain on Jacob, who was ingenious in engineering the mating rituals of the rest of the flock such that they mated and bore sheep that were speckled/ spotted/ dark. Thereafter, because Laban was no longer happy with him (since all his flock gave birth to young ones that were either speckled/ streaked or dark) Jacob decided to flee from him. Rachel even took his household gods, probably to dispose of them (Laban was still a polytheist).

Laban pursues him (Genesis 31)

Laban hunted Jacob down and demanded to know why he has stolen away like a thief in the night, kidnapping (!) his children, grandchildren and flocks of sheep who he felt belonged to him. He even had the gall to say that Jacob should have informed him of his departure and he would have prepared a farewell party for him (yeah right).

Jacob could take it no longer and took Laban to task – he has given everything to him in the past 20 years and yet Laban has changed his wages 10 times. And he knew that had God not been with him, he would have left with nothing.

Because they could not come to an agreement, they made a covenant – that Jacob will take no other women as wife and Laban to never harm Jacob and his family.

Lesson to be learned = Despite all that we see in front of us, despite insurmountable odds, God will still provide for us as long as we choose to believe and dwell in him. Sometimes we must do something (e.g. Jacob engineering the mating rituals of the sheep), sometimes all we need to do is just ask him for it (e.g. Leah asking for children). Regardless, even if do not receive what we want from God immediately, have patience and continue believing, for it WILL be provided when the time is right.

A few days ago, I was talking to a friend/coworker, as I noticed she had a new computer. She explain

A few days ago, I was talking to a friend/coworker, as I noticed she had a new computer. She explained to me that the company was getting them new computers to avoid them using their personal computers for work; therefore, she was looking to sell her old (but in perfect condition) Macbook for $100. We both agreed that the resale value on computers sucks.

Days later, I was getting ready to go meet up with the bf for lunch. As I hustled around my room trying to finish up, I decided quickly to check my FB before running out the door. I noticed my friend Yvette had a new status update:

“Anyone have a laptop that they would like to give to a pastor in Uganda?”

I humored myself with the idea of giving away my laptop. But when it came down to it, I just wasn’t willing to be that sacrificial. I kept thinking, “That would be nice, but really… who is going to give away a laptop?”

Then I remembered my friend Tori, and our conversation a few days ago. $100! That’s not so bad, I could chip in $50, and I’m sure my friend Yvette would do the same. If we split it, we could totally provide for this pastor. So I text Tori to see if the deal is still available. It is.

Tori asked if I wanted it, so I explained the situation and let her know I would contact her if Yvette wanted to split it.

I shoot a message to Yvette to see if she’s willing to go halvsies. She is.

Before I can write back Tori to let her know we’ll buy it off her, she writes me back. She told me she’s felt God telling her she should probably just give it away, and that she wanted to give it to us for free. Homie say what?!

I told Yvette and we were both freaking out. I love how God orchestrates things like that.

Yvette told me about how badly the pastor needed the computer, and that she was discouraged because she thought there was no way she’d be able to provide it. But God pulls some strings here and there and makes things happen. So rad.
I especially loved that God could have done this 1000 different ways. But He always chooses to involve people… a lot of people, even if it is a tiny story. Looking back, I really had very little to do with the whole transaction. I’m just the middleman, I didn’t do anything. No sacrifice, no struggle. Just a bridge. God could have easily done it without me. But He knew how exciting and joyful it would be to include more people, and reveal Himself to more people.

Man, I love me some Jesus.

(PS: Thanks to Tori for being willing to sacrifice the $100.)

Story from the Wall Street Journal, by the Dean of Harvard Medical School Jeffrey S. Flier. Excerpt:

Story from the Wall Street Journal, by the Dean of Harvard Medical School Jeffrey S. Flier.

Excerpt:

As the dean of Harvard Medical School I am frequently asked to comment on the health-reform debate. I’d give it a failing grade.

[...]Speeches and news reports can lead you to believe that proposed congressional legislation would tackle the problems of cost, access and quality. But that’s not true. The various bills do deal with access by expanding Medicaid and mandating subsidized insurance at substantial cost—and thus addresses an important social goal. However, there are no provisions to substantively control the growth of costs or raise the quality of care. So the overall effort will fail to qualify as reform.

In discussions with dozens of health-care leaders and economists, I find near unanimity of opinion that, whatever its shape, the final legislation that will emerge from Congress will markedly accelerate national health-care spending rather than restrain it. Likewise, nearly all agree that the legislation would do little or nothing to improve quality or change health-care’s dysfunctional delivery system. The system we have now promotes fragmented care and makes it more difficult than it should be to assess outcomes and patient satisfaction. The true costs of health care are disguised, competition based on price and quality are almost impossible, and patients lose their ability to be the ultimate judges of value.

Worse, currently proposed federal legislation would undermine any potential for real innovation in insurance and the provision of care. It would do so by overregulating the health-care system in the service of special interests such as insurance companies, hospitals, professional organizations and pharmaceutical companies, rather than the patients who should be our primary concern.

In effect, while the legislation would enhance access to insurance, the trade-off would be an accelerated crisis of health-care costs and perpetuation of the current dysfunctional system—now with many more participants. This will make an eventual solution even more difficult. Ultimately, our capacity to innovate and develop new therapies would suffer most of all.

In order to have an economy recover, you need people running government who actually understand health care and economics. My lunch-time book is Regina Hertzlinger’s “Who Killed Health Care?”. Regina teaches at Harvard University, as well. She talks about how we need to lower costs and improve quality by introduce elements of choice and competition. Her plan is similar to the Republican’s Patient’s Choice Act. Consumer-Driven health care is the right solution to the problem of rising health care costs. Obama’s plan just adds fuel to the fire.

Psalm 37:5-7 (Message) Open up before God, keep nothing back; he’ll do whatever needs to be do

Psalm 37:5-7 (Message)

Open up before God, keep nothing back; he’ll do whatever needs to be done: He’ll validate your life in the clear light of day and stamp you with approval at high noon. Quiet down before God, be prayerful before him. Don’t bother with those who climb the ladder who elbow their way to the top.

The Favor of God will inevitably shine and permeate the life of every Child of the Living God through Jesus Christ. It is God’s heart desire to bless His Creation. When life is lived openly before God in a consecrated effort filled with commitment, prayer, devotion, love and worship, amazing things will begin to happen. It is an exchange that began in the Old Testament and was only dramatically increased by the perfection of grace in the New Testament. Like all things that are of the Lord, there is a process associated with the arrival of God’s Favor. Character must be prepared to receive such power and glory manifested in the natural. Therefore there are challenges and trials along the way. Each victory is savored and enjoyed while appreciated all the more as victory is realized. People begin to notice when God’s Spotlight shines on the His faithful, diligent children. One will begin to move in different circles of influence as God begins to introduce His Child to His Purpose.

The principle of God’s Favor shines like light and stretches far and wide. As God’s Favor enters a Believer’s life, it is a natural effect for it to spill over into the lives of those around them. All of a sudden friends, colleagues and neighbors will begin to experience unexplainable blessing and goodness without the same dedicated process that drew God’s attention in the first place. The enemy finds that to be a quite useful tool of distraction to remove the focus from Jesus and place it on the co-worker or acquaintance that also seems to now be experiencing the great favor of God minus the investment or dedication. It is in that moment that Christians feel cheated and discontent. It is a robbery of satisfaction rather than a moment of thankfulness that once again God is using His Child to touch another. The same idea is what moves individuals from church to church based on radical moves of God in each membership. Watching for the light, but never committing to the process they move under the Grace Overflow and attempt to catch the stream released by the petitions and prayers of others. For these people understand that God is not a respecter of persons and will bless them as well if they are positioned close to the favor and light of His Children.

As a Christian who understands the flow of God’s Grace and His Powerful Purpose invested in each of His Children, one must understand that God will not send anything to His Child that is not intended to be shared. God’s abundance always comes with an overflow for His Orphans. The people around His Children who do not have a relationship with their Father and are desperately searching for the Truth are the very ones that your Father will bless in the abundance of favor and grace that flows from your life. It always pleases a parent to see their child share with another – no less is the case with our Heavenly Father!

Psalm 36:7-9 (NLT)

How precious is your unfailing love, O God! All humanity finds shelter in the shadow of your wings. You feed them from the abundance of your own house, letting them drink from your river of delights. For you are the fountain of life, the light by which we see.

God’s purpose is manifested in His Child’s Life through expressed Favor that reaches the lives of all God’s Children not just those who live in His House. The next time you feel tempted to be angry about the unmerited blessing of others who are not living for the Lord – DON’T! The Favor of your life has simply overflowed into theirs as your Father intended and it is a good thing! All humanity is God’s target not just His Own. It is our job to live lives that produce an inviting environment for the Presence of God, Provision of God, and Power of God which will in turn “feed” all God’s People both dedicated and indecisive. You have become God’s Fountain of Life for others and in that rejoice! Do not be robbed of the sheer joy of being God’s Favored Child and be glad to share His Wealth!

I was talking about the unusual and unorthox and today I’m going to go a little further

I was talking about the unusual and unorthox and today I’m going to go a little further…

We must follow God and listen to Him. One day I needed something financially and I didn’t know where it was going to come from. Well I received a phone call on a Sunday morning with instructions and as a result of that call the Lord led me to go to a church that I had never been to before.

When I arrived God gave me further instructions of what I needed to do to get what I needed. Well I obeyed the instructions and the next day I had 200.00. I won’t go into the details because it was unorthodox, but I just obeyed and got a positive result.

God wants to teach us how to tap into his supernatual provision. He will show you. Just be open and think outside the box. And don’t rule it out just because it’s unusual or unorthodox.

Matthew 17:24-27:

24 When they arrived in Capernaum, the collectors of the half shekel [the temple tax] went up to Peter and said, Does not your Teacher pay the half shekel?

25 He answered, Yes. And when he came home, Jesus spoke to him [about it] first, saying, What do you think, Simon? From whom do earthly rulers collect duties or tribute–from their own sons or from others not of their own family?

26 And when Peter said, From other people not of their own family, Jesus said to him, Then the sons are exempt.

27 However, in order not to give offense and cause them to stumble [that is, to cause them to judge unfavorably and unjustly] go down to the sea and throw in a hook. Take the first fish that comes up, and when you open its mouth you will find there a shekel. Take it and give it to them to pay the temple tax for Me and for yourself.
