Vets in New York have reportedly diagnosed the first known case of H1N1 Swine Flu in a dog.

The LA Times reports…The virus has been found before in other pets, including at least three ferrets, several cats and pigs and a cheetah named Gijima at a wildlife preserve in Santa Rosa.

A couple of the cats died, but most of the animals recovered.

Full story here-http://www.latimes.com/news/nation-and-world/la-sci-swine-flu-dog23-2009dec23,0,2022503.story

They say we should not be alarmed by this alarming development. Reportedly it is a “rare” occurence.

What do you think? …how are we going to get the dogs and cats to wash their hands?

I am kind of concerned, lots of dogs around here!….

Sen. Orrin Hatch (a Mormon) wrote a Hanukkah song, so why shouldn’t the Conan O’Brien Show’s only Jew write a song for Mormans? Exactly. H/t to Jon for bringing it to my attention.

Providenciales is an island in the Turks and Caicos Islands. The island has an area of 98 km2 (38 sq mi) and a population of 30,542, making it the largest island in population and the third largest in area. It is served by the Providenciales International Airport. It is home to the only conch farm in the world.

As recently as 1964, Providenciales (usually called Provo) did not have a single wheeled vehicle. Following in the footsteps of Club Med, the island’s first large hotel and casino complex opened in 1990 and touched off a development boom. Provo is now the most tourist-oriented and developed of the Turks and Caicos Islands, boasting many resort hotels and an 18-hole golf course. The island has recently become popular with retirees from around the world, kindling a boom of residential development. Given its recent evolution, the atmosphere is more reminiscent of the Florida Keys than Nassau, with little of the character of other Caribbean isles.

The resorts on Providenciales are centered on five mile-long (8 km) Grace Bay, with its brilliant white sand and shimmering turquoise waters. Apart from the beaches, Provo’s charm lies in its rugged hills and ridges, which are carpeted with prickly pear cactus and scrub. The trump card, however, remains the diving: miles and miles of coral reefs are temptingly close to shore. Provo is also surrounded by uninhabited cays that are easily reached by chartered boat or excursion.

The only town, sprawling, namesake Providenciales, sits in the middle of the island. Most of the island’s services are here, including upscale shopping malls. There are also pockets of makeshift shacks interspersed among the more upscale residences. Opportunities for sightseeing are slim, though history buffs might check out the ruins of Cheshire Hall, a 1790s plantation house constructed by British loyalists.

The western half of Provo is mostly barren wilderness, home to the island’s best natural attraction, Chalk Sound National Park. The park is a three-mile-long (5 km) bay a few miles southwest of Downtown Providenciales. The color of the water is a uniform turquoise and studded with countless mushroom-like tiny islets. Also on the western part of the island is Northwest Point Marine National Park, which extends to nearby reefs and several saline lakes that attract breeding and migrant waterfowl.

Over the thanksgiving break I needed something light to read on the short drive home and I decided

Over the thanksgiving break I needed something light to read on the short drive home and I decided on the 5,000 Year Leap.

I figured that if I wanted to fit in with the politicos here on campus I should re-read this Mormon classic. I use the term classic lightly; after all, it reads more like a coloring book than a historical work. That being said, I couldn’t help but laugh when I read about a panel discussion at BYU which covered Skousen and Beck’s influence on Mormon conservatism. The Deseret News reports,

“It’s easy for me to see why (Beck) would have picked up on Cleon Skousen’s book and found it inspiring,” Davis said. “It fit in with his own performance.”

And that’s a lot of what Beck does — perform, the professors said.

“Most of the books of Beck’s I’ve picked up … are like his manic, ADHD television personality,” said BYU political science professor Ralph Hancock. “He’s just throwing stuff out there. They’re not meant to be read as discursive arguments. They’re just thrown out there to try to entertain people who would rather be Twittering or playing video games.”

Hancock said he agrees with some points made by Beck and Skousen but overall finds their arguments lacking in substance and scholarly research.

Are they letting anyone teach at BYU Provo now-a-days? I can point out the scholarly ineptitude of Glenn Beck and the idiotic nonsense of Skousen, where’s my job?

Joking aside, it’s nice to see that even conservative professors at BYU are responsible enough to call out Beck and Skousen for being nothing more than entertainers.

Utah Lake dominates Utah Valley in north-central Utah, with major cities such as Provo and Orem hemmed between the lake’s eastern shore and the Wasatch Mountains. West of the lake are the Lake Mountains and jutting into the south portion of the lake is West Mountain, which divides Goshen Bay and Lincoln Beach. Connected to the main body of the lake are two large, shallow bays: the aforementioned Goshen Bay to the south and Provo Bay to the east, where Hobble Creek enters the lake.

Despite its large surface area, the lake is shallow; it has a maximum depth of 18 feet (4.27 m) and an average depth of about 9.4 feet (2.74 m). This shallowness allows winds to easily stir up sediments from the lake’s bottom, contributing to the turbidity seen in Utah Lake’s water.

Major tributaries include the Provo River, Spanish Fork, and American Fork rivers, as well as Hobble, Mill Race, and Currant creeks. Additionally, there are many hot springs and smaller creeks flowing into the lake. Utah Lake is drained by the Jordan River, which begins at the lake’s north end, where a pumping station has been created to regulate its flow. It then flows north through Utah and Salt Lake counties into the southeast portion of Great Salt Lake.

The H1N1 Swine Flu virus knows no borders, has no boundaries, and has absolutely no respect for religious or cultural traditions.

This year at the annual Hajj to Mecca, Four foreign pilgrims have died of swine flu, the Saudi Health Ministry announced on Saturday.

The Saudi Arabia Health Ministry said none of the four foreign victims had been vaccinated against the H1N1 virus, as has been recommended by The Health Ministry.

An official statement released by the ministry said all had underlying health problems, including cancer and respiratory illness, AFP news agency reported.

Three of the victims died in Medina and one in Mecca.

http://www.arabnews.com/?page=1&section=0&article=128688&d=22&m=11&y=200Over

The BBC is reporting that….up to three million Muslims from around the world take part in the holy pilgrimage every year, but health officials have expressed fears that it could provide a breeding ground for the virus.

Authorities had tried to prepare for any outbreaks by installing thermal cameras at airports and sea terminals, deploying 15,000 additional health workers and ensuring hundreds of extra beds were available.

The Hajj (Arabic: حج‎ Ḥaǧǧ) is a pilgrimage to Mecca. It is currently the largest annual pilgrimage in the world,[1] and is the fifth pillar of Islam, a moral obligation that must be carried out at least once in their lifetime by every able-bodied Muslim who can afford to do so. The Hajj is a demonstration of the solidarity of the Muslim people, and their submission to Allah (God).[2] The pilgrimage occurs from the 7th to 13th day of Dhu al-Hijjah, the 12th month of the Islamic calendar. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hajj)

The Health Minister has reported that there are 16 other people that have been diagnosed with swine flu and four remain in hospital in “critical condition”.

He added 12 others had recovered following treatment.

The Saudi government has recommended the elderly, pregnant women, people with chronic diseases and children skip the Hajj this year.

The Saudi government has said all pilgrims need a certificate of vaccination before they can apply for a visa.

This is real people, and this disease is spreading worldwide,at a rapid pace.

I encourage everyone to get a H1N1 swine flu shot as soon as you can.The reports of any side effects are exaggerated, and will cause millions of people to perish from the lack of the vaccine.

Any paranoia surrounding any alledged complications from the shot are totally unsubstantiated, and if those people out there insist on not receiving the vaccine, then we as a society should only expect more mounting mass casualties from the swine flu, as exhibited this weekend, unfortunately in Mecca.

If it can happen in Mecca, it can happen anywhere.

Please everyone, wash your hands, and go get the shot.

So I’m at the theater half waiting in line to see The Twilight Saga: New Moon, meaning I am near the line and not in it. They’re all standing, and Grandma made tacos tonight so my stomach is decidedly tender and I prefer to sit in a chair. Once again I am by myself. The few people I know who would pay to see this movie are in other states or saw the midnigt showing. Alas. I refuse to coerce some young man into taking me out to see it. I did that once and I don’t wish to inflict that on decent males. So far the crowd is made up of bleach blondes in Abercrombie clothes and their spikey-haired boyfriends. Not nearly as many moms as last time, but this a late showing and I guess most moms are getting their Sunday School lessons ready.

Whoops. Upon further investigation most of the spikey-haired dudes are here for Blind Side. My bad. This popcorn doesn’t taste that great. Meh. Lots of girls in here brought blankets. Just an observation.

Gonna sign off to join Team Jacob. Review to come later.

A four-month old infant girl is the latest casualty to succumb to the deadly H1N1 Swine flu virus that is spreading faster than a wildfire across the nation.

The flu pandemic is on the rise and has been allowed to kill at a rate that has gone unchecked, due to the lack of and the fear of taking the Swine flu vaccination. The vaccine has been doled out to a select few qualifying groups of minor children, health workers, and people who supervise and come in to contact with groups of children.

In this latest case, doctors suspect that, since infants under the age of 6 months can not take the current vaccine due to health risk, and the fact that her parents were not allowed to be vaccinated since they are not in a rationing qualifying group, they were all at risk to be infected by the virus.

It is being reported in the media that both of the deceased baby girls siblings had received the H1N1 vaccinations, as their parents value and respect the vaccination program.

The infant had no known underlying medical conditions, according to the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency, and none of the family members, vaccinated or not, tested positive for the virus, so it is still a mystery as to how the infant contracted the disease. They also report that the child had no underlying medical conditions, that has been known to make the virus even more deadly, and has been cited as the cause of dying from the disease.

I suspect that someone kissed the child, or hugged her, as people tend to do with babies, and that would be hard to track, and most Americans do not wash their hands after using the bathroom or sneezing in their hands, which only helps to spread the disease.

“If a child that age — up to 5 years old — gets a fever, shows symptoms, the parents should seek medical care as soon as possible because they can go down the tubes really fast,” County public health officer Wilma Wooten said.

Doctors at the Rady children’s Hospital in San Diego say that this case is unusual because the child exhibited no signs of the flu. She only had a little bit of a cough, but no fever or running nose for about four days.

On the fourth day the mom put the child down to sleep, and 45 minutes in to the babies nap, the mom discovered the child had stopped breathing.

She was rushed to Paradise Valley Hospital in south San Diego and was resuscitated, then flown to Rady’s children’s Hospital, where she died 24 hours later.

Dr. John Bradley of Rady’s Children Hospital stated that…We now know that H1N1 probably had something to do with setting up the baby for not breathing”…

To date, there have been 33 deaths of San Diego County residents linked to the H1N1 influenza and four deaths of non-residents, according to the HHSA. The number of people hospitalized with the virus locally stands at 617!!!

There is only enough vaccines to help 13% of the population, but each of the county’s where the infant died, six public health centers and one immunization clinic have each received between 20 and 60 additional doses of injectable H1N1 vaccine, according to the HHSA.

Those vaccines will be given to pregnant women which is a high risk group that is given priority due the rationing of the vaccinations due to a production shortage.

I am also afraid that the paranoia associated with the fear of the side effects of the vaccination will only help to spread the disease even quicker.I personally know some associates of mine that refuse to be inoculated due to their holistic beliefs, and some people reject it out of pure ignorance.

The problem with all of that is that Americans continue to have deplorable personal hygiene. I have witnessed some who think it is funny to sneeze and cough in the face of some unsuspecting citizen, in a ‘Jackass” inspired joke, and these are the same guys that do not bother to wash their hands after using the restroom.

I would rather risk the side effects of the H1N1 vaccine, than risk having to rely upon the general public to wash their hand,..or for that matter to wash their bodies at all. I know the latter is more of a risk, and I refuse to gamble with my health.

Those with underlying medical conditions experiencing influenza-like symptoms should contact their doctor immediately, according to the Health and Human Services Agency .

County health officials again encouraged people to stay away from work or school if they have influenza-like symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue.

Please practice safe and sane pristine personal hygiene…our lives depend on our cleanliness!!!

I want you all to have this. ALL OF YOU!

Many of you know that I work tightly with the local music community here in Provo, but what few realize is why. Now is my chance to show you! Yes, Provo UT is just chock-full of musicianship…the cool kind.

A local online mag, Rhombus Magazine, has put together their first free compilation of local music and many (but not all) of my favorites and friends are embedded within. This is quality stuff you would enjoy. I hope you can take my word for it. Plus, local artist Jess Smart Smiley designed the pretty cover art. This is a great sampling for everyone!

…and please, leave your feedback about the music you hear. The artists love your comments.

Home prices in Utah County, Utah continue to drop. During October, the median sold price of Utah County Homes was less than $200,000 for the first time in years. The average list price of Provo homes also continues to decline as shown by this graph.

October was a pretty good month for home sales, the fourth best of the year for Utah County. Home sales were up by nearly 5% from last month, as 470 residential homes sold, and were up by 22% compared with a year ago. Many of these home sales can be attributed to the then expiration of the first time buyer tax credit.

Utah County currently has 3,896 residential homes for sale. This is 16% less inventory than a year ago. At Octobers sales pace, Utah County has 8.36 months of active inventory.

I’m trying to remember who told me to (as mentioned in the title of the post) find a girl who

I’m trying to remember who told me to (as mentioned in the title of the post) find a girl who likes to ride motorcycles. I’m drawing a blank, but it was just a few days ago. It reminded me though of how I learned to ride motorcycles.

The first person who taught me anything about bikes was named Christine. She was the roommate and high school chum of a girl I met in college (and had a huge crush on. The unnamed friend eventually broke my heart. Sigh.) Christine was about 5′9¨ with long blond curly hair. She was skinny and curvy and had blue eyes and freckles on her nose. She was a babe. Totally beautiful. She was also a TOUGH chick. She formed an all-female ROTC team to enter some kind of physical competition and WON. Yeah. Against guys.

Well, the school we attended was Brigham Young University, which has this peculiar honor code. Along with the normal don’t cheat or plagiarise or get arrested, they’ve got things like no alcohol, smoking or premarital sex. (They encourage MARRIED people to have sex though.) Strange thing for a college, right? But there’s more. Oh yes. There’s more. The honor code goes on to talk about dress and grooming standards. No shorts or skirts above the knee. Men’s hair has to be cut above the collar. Men have to shave every day. And wear socks. (No. I’m NOT joking. That last one was changed shortly before I finished, but it seriously was part of the honor code when I started.) The honor code was ‘enforced’ by the honor code office. Seriously, there was a University division whose purpose was to look into honor code violations. Usually it only focused on the alcohol and sex violations. The dress and grooming standards were usually left to professors and the ‘testing center’. You couldn’t go take your finals unless you were wearing socks and clean-shaven. Sigh.

So. My hair generally pushed the limits of the honor code. It was usually long in front, and just above the collar in the back. I’d let it grow somewhere between 4-6 months, chop it all off, and let it grow again. While I was in the longer end of the cycle, Christine bought a bike. A Yamaha 650 cruiser. She loved that thing. And she used to call me all the time to see if I wanted to go for rides. We’d head out up the canyon or through town, me chewing on her long hair, with my own long hair streaming out the back.

One day, she called, and we hopped on her bike, and she pulled into the stadium parking lot. She gave me a run down on shifting and braking, and general bike knowledge. Then she let me drive. We drove through the parking lot for a bit, then I drove her back.

That was my last ride on Christine’s bike. Shortly after that, I cut my hair off. She never called again. (I think I moved away shortly after too.) I bumped into her a few months later and said, ¨Hey. You haven’t called me in a while. You used to call me to go riding all the time.¨ Her reply was ¨You used to be good for my image.¨

Longhorn fans, hate me all you want. Your team is now #4 in the most prestigious rankings in the country. This despite a 34 point blowout road win. Gator fans, hate me all you want. Your team is still #2, despite Alabama’s near collapse against the Vols. Bronco fans, hate me now. Your team is #6, despite a blowout win on the island. Yes, my rankings may make your head scratch and your forehead wrinkle. But there’s justification here. Boise State hasn’t played anybody, prompting Iowa to jump them. Alabama has still played better teams than Florida. And I’ll explain the Texas setback in a blog post tomorrow, for it is the one that could mean the most come Dec. 6.

1) Alabama Crimson Tide (8-0) – I picked the Vols to win, and they probably should have. But they didn’t. Alabama’s defense was stiff enough in another quality win. They get a bye week to prepare for LSU’s trip to Tuscaloosa.

2) Florida Gators (7-0) – Something is off with the offense. Playing a relatively weak SEC schedule, they have broken 30 just once in five conference games. Red zone offense has been a problem. In 35 trips, they have only 16 touchdowns.

3) Iowa Hawkeyes (8-0) – The Hawkeyes are 8-0 for the first time ever after beating a hot Michigan State team in East Lansing. It’s not pretty, but this team finds ways to win. The offense, ranked #87 in the country, needs to play better.

4) Texas Longhorns (7-0) – Colt McCoy is closing in on the all time FBS wins record after an impressive 41-7 win against Missouri. It’s Texas’ first well-played game in the conference, and it comes just in time. They go to Stillwater next.

5) Cincinnati Bearcats (7-0) – Can we still say Cincinnati is flying under the radar? They are blowing teams out while making their best case for a title shot. After Syracuse, things get tough with games against UConn, West Virginia and Pitt.

6) Boise State Broncos (7-0) – If the Broncos want any prayer of playing for a national championship, they’ll need four teams ahead of them on this list to lose. They are winning by similar margins against much worse teams – simple as that.

7) LSU Tigers (6-1) – LSU came off the bye week by throttling Auburn. Their only loss is Florida, and they’ve allowed 20+ points just twice. They go to Alabama in two weeks and can still control their own destiny to a conference championship.

8) Oregon Ducks (6-1) – The Ducks continue to roll. Jeremiah Masoli came back this week to throw for 157 yards and a touchdown, and added two rushing touchdowns too. If they beat USC Saturday, The Trojans will miss a BCS game.

9) Penn State Nittany Lions (7-1) – Hammering Michigan by 25 in the Big House will get you back on track. Penn State’s defense is the reason they are beating teams up. They are #3 in the nation, allowing just 240 yards per game.

10) TCU Horned Frogs (7-0) – The Horned Frogs’ four biggest wins have come on the road. After blowing out BYU in Provo, TCU should finish 12-0. Will the BCS take both them and an undefeated Boise State team?

11) Oklahoma State Cowboys (6-1) – The Texas A&M win looks better after A&M blew out Texas Tech in Lubbock, but otherwise it hasn’t been much of a schedule for the Cowboys. A win this week puts them in control of the south.

12) USC Trojans (6-1) - Maybe my expectations are too high for this team, but I just don’t think one possession wins are good enough against the Pac 10. Matt Barkley’s two interceptions are concerning, as is the defense all of a sudden.

13) Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (7-1) – Virginia was the only remaining unbeaten in the ACC until Georgia Tech crushed them. With the Miami loss, the Yellow Jackets are now in line to win the Coastal if they can beat Wake and Duke.

14) Houston Cougars (6-1) – It’s time to start seriously considering Case Keenum for Heisman. He leads the nation in total offense, completions per game, passing yards per game and is second in touchdown passes.

15) Pittsburgh Panthers (7-1) – A solid win over South Florida topped with a lot of one loss teams going down bumps Pitt up to 15. They now enter a stretch in which they play just two games in 33 days. The showdown with Cincy is Dec. 5.

16) Virginia Tech Hokies (5-2) – The Hokies still have that bitter taste in their mouths from the Georgia Tech loss, but can still win the ACC with some help. Ryan Williams averages six yards per carry and has 10 touchdowns already.

17) Miami Hurricanes (5-2) – The ‘Canes just couldn’t shake Clemson, and eventually lost the game in overtime. An uncharacteristic defense gave up 410 yards, and Jacory Harris threw three interceptions for Miami.

18) Ohio State Buckeyes (6-2) – Terrelle Pryor needed a huge game after the Purdue meltdown, and he delivered. Pryor went 13-25 for 239 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran for 104 yards and a score in the win over Minnesota.

19) West Virginia Mountaineers (6-1) - The Mountaineers are quietly playing well since the Auburn loss and are undefeated in the Big East. They still have Cincinnati, Pittsburgh and Rutgers, but first is a trip to South Florida.

20) Utah Utes (6-1) – Here’s a team that has lost to the only good team it has played, yet sits at #19 at 6-1. Utah is doing all the right things to win, as they showed in overtime against Air Force. They still go to Provo and Fort Worth.

21) South Carolina Gamecocks (6-2) – Steve Spurrier is eking out wins, but he’ll tell you that against the SEC, winning is all that matters. They outgained Vanderbilt by 158 yards and were turnover-free, yet needed a late TD to hold on.

22) BYU Cougars (6-2) – I don’t think anyone saw that coming. BYU failed to show up against TCU, leaving them all but out of the Mountain West championship hunt. Five TCU players scored in a game that was over after the first quarter.

23) Wisconsin Badgers (5-2) – Despite not having won since Oct. 3, the Badgers are back in the rankings after a few two loss teams fell this week. For Wisconsin, 10-2 is a legitimate possibility, although this season, who knows?

24) Kansas Jayhawks (5-2) – Two weeks ago they looked like they could challenge for a BCS game. Now they’re thinking bowl eligibility and maybe a north title after OU blows them out. Kansas fans should be looking toward basketball.

25) Central Michigan (7-1) – Why not? Butch Jones has the Chippewas at 7-1 going into the showdown at Boston College. They have a win at Michigan State and played Arizona tough in the desert. They’ve also won seven in a row.
