Nach dem Microsoft ja vor kurzem für Lips eine besondere deutsche Version veröffentlicht hat, legt nun auch Sony nach…

Netflix (s NFLX) has started shipping the discs required to stream its “Watch Instantly” movies on the Sony PlayStation 3 (s SNE). According to a corporate blog post today, Netflix VP of marketing Jessie Becker said the company sent out PS3 discs to 100,000 Netflix subscribers who requested them. Becker went on to say that after Netflix “tune[d] a few more details,” everyone else who requested a disc would receive one in the next couple of weeks. Users will have to use the special disc each time they want to stream Netflix on the PS3 until the service can be integrated into the console hardware.

During its Q3 earnings call, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings said that his company was going to partner with a CE device that had a “material installed base.” The next week, Netflix announced it would make its streaming service available on Sony’s PS3 gaming console, which has an installed base of roughly 9 million units.

A survey from One Touch and the Praxi Group released yesterday estimated that 11.1 percent of Netflix subscribers (roughly 1.2 million people) had watched the Watch Instantly streaming service through a game console, which up until now, meant Microsoft’s (s MSFT) Xbox.

We don’t know how many people in total have requested the special discs, and if any of them are new subscribers brought in by the PS3. Regardless, an initial batch of 100,000 is a good indication that Netflix’s streaming usage will get a nice shot in the arm from the PS3 — and that Netflix is on the right path with the increased emphasis its placing on streaming.

Wir waren heute von Sony in Berlin eingeladen, um den neuen PlayStation Hit EyePet auszuprobieren.
Und was sollen wir sagen, wir haben uns in dieses knufflig süße Äffchen verliebt.
Dieses Spiel ist ein Muss für jede Familie unter dem Weihnachtsbaum. Hier unsere Eindrücke von unserem Treffen mit dem EyePet…

Die Packung in der EyePet verkauft wird, gibt es wahlweise mit oder ohne Kamera zu kaufen, darin enthalten ist das Spiel und die Magic Card.
Die Magic Card benutzt ihr, um Gegenstände auf den Bildschirm zu zaubern, wie Shampoo, einen Gesundheitsscanner oder eine Bowlingbahn.
Nach dem Start erklärt euch ein Professor, wie ihr eure Kamera und Lichtverhältnisse einstellen müsst und wieviel Platz ihr in eurem Zimmer braucht.
Wir finden, dass ihr mit normaler Deckenbeleuchtung am besten fahrt und statt eines Tisches wie in den Videos, den Fußboden zum Spielen benutzen solltet.

Habt ihr alles eingestellt, kann es auch schon losgehen und ihr seht ein Ei auf dem Bildschirm aus dem euer EyePet schlüpfen wird.
Aber nicht von alleine, denn zunächst müsst ihr es wärmen und mit ihm spielen damit es sich traut aus seinem Ei zu kommen.
Nachdem es draußen ist, will es natürlich seinen Namen wissen, wir haben unser Äffchen einmal Oscar genannt.

Ab jetzt habt ihr Zugriff aus das Start Menü. Von hier aus könnt ihr zum Beispiel den Tagesplan starten, wo ihr immer einige Aufgaben zugewiesen bekommt die ihr zusammen mit euren neuem Mitbewohner welcher in eurem Fernseher wohnt, erledigen müsst.
Am Anfang zum Beispiel springt euer Eyepet auf einem Trampolin, es hüpft jedoch so hin und her, dass ihr die Position des Trampolins immer neu justieren müsst, damit es nicht auf dem Boden plumpst. Die Steuerung des Trampolins übernehmt ihr mit der Magic Card, die ihr hier auf dem Boden hin und her bewegen müsst während ihr auf dem Bildschirm statt der Karte das Trampolin seht.
Doch dies ist noch nicht alles, aus dem Hauptmenü heraus könnt ihr euer EyePet auch ganz beliebig anpassen, neu einkleiden, frisieren, sauber machen oder füttern.

Spaß machen auch die vielen Spiele, die ihr nach und nach freischalten könnt. Unser Oscar malt nämlich sehr gerne und so konnten wir Minispiele ausprobieren, zum Beispiel, in dem ein Flugzeug von uns auf Papier gemalt wurde, dieses wird dann in die Kamera gehalten, der Baustoff ausgesucht und schon malt euer neues Hausäffchen dieses nach und ein echtes Flugzeug erscheint im Spiel. Nun könnt ihr zusammen mit ihm losfliegen und Ballons zerplatzen lassen.
Nach und nach stehen euch weitere Spielzeuge, Materialien und natürlich auch Anziehsachen zur Verfügung mit dem ihr euch und eurem Spielgefährten eine Freude machen könnt.

So könnt ihr auch das eingebaute Mikrofon in der Kamera benutzen um eurem kleinen Freund das Singen beizubringen oder ihm durch Händeklatschen zum Springen zu animieren.

Eyepet macht wirklich großen Spaß und ist auch nur der Anfang. Bereits jetzt stehen 2 Pakete zum Download bereit, eines mit Westernsachen zum anziehen für 2,99 € und ein kostenloses Überraschungspaket. Diese findet ihr im EyePet Store im Hauptmenü.
Hier wird es in Zukunft immer wieder weitere Inhalte geben, zum Beispiel ist bereits ein Weihnachtspaket in Planung.
Sollte sich EyePet gut verkaufen, woran wir keinen Zweifel haben, wird es von Sony sicherlich bald weitere Add-ons oder gar andere Tierarten geben. Wie wäre es denn mit EyeCat als Idee?

Bis zu 4 EyePets können erstellt werden,die gleichzeitig in einem Profil wohnen können, somit sollte es keinen Streit in der Familie geben. Gibt es mehr als 4 EyePet Fans in der Familie fragt einfach eure Eltern oder Mitbewohner, ob sie sich auch ein Profil erstellen wollen, welches euch dann Platz für 4 weitere Pets gibt.

Allerdings können (noch nicht) mehrere EyePets zusammen auf einem Bildschirm erscheinen. Dies wäre vielleicht eine nützliche Funktion die man hinzufügen könnte.

So wäre es doch schön, wenn alle EyePets der Familie zusammen Weihnachten feiern könnten und zusammen neue Geschenke auspacken würden.

Wir können dieses Spiel wirklich nur empfehlen, es dürfte auch Erwachsenen Freude bereiten, also nicht wundern wenn zunächst Vati als erstes sein Haustier erstellen und ausprobieren möchte.
Es ist erstaunlich wie real das EyePet auf dem Bildschirm erscheint und wie leicht und angenehm das interagieren mit ihm ist. Dank der Fähigkeiten der PlayStation 3 sieht das Spiel nicht nur grafisch schön aus, sondern alle Aktionen von euch kommen ohne Zeitverzögerung direkt bei eurem kleinem Freund im Fernseher an.

Das Spiel soll seit heute dem 23. Oktober im Handel sein, allerdings konnten weder wir noch andere das Spiel bisher irgendwo im Laden sehen, vielleicht müssen wir und unsere zukünftigen Haustiere noch ein wenig gedulden.

I am really surprised about Fifa 10. I thought it is was going to be so much better than Fifa 09, but it is not really that great. It is harder to shoot, the dribbling is weird and the game stutters from time to time. But on the other hand, it has some good features like you can take a picture of yourself and your face will be on a player that you can create. I really like the manager mode in Fifa 10. In manager mode, it is just like real life, you take care of all the big trades, maintain a good budget.

Uncharted 2 among thieves is one of this years  greatest games for Sony’s PS3. This game had received a lot of hype and really got the community excited about it. This game has everything going for it. First the presentation; from start to finish the game looks and handles as if the developers went over every area with a fine tooth comb and worked out all of the problems. From the main menu to the ending credits you’ll be meet with virtually no loading times and amazing HD graphics, the amount of little detail put into the textures is amazing. The game flows seamlessly from cities to mountains. There are rarely any forms of slow downs to be seen.Every inch of the game is fully rendered (even the small corners of the game.) The Story is as  serious as it is humorous, the game takes you through 25 different areas and all help to push the story on the story always seems to flow perfectly, the developers clearly put in a ton of effort to fill the story with suspense and action. This is the type of story every first party games should have. If you haven’t played the first one , some of the jokes and old relationships don’t make sense, but the story does a good job on its own and doesn’t require the first one to be understood. With that  the story is complimented nicely by the outstanding voice acting. In the first game, the voice acting was lacking at some points, but with this game everyone from the leading roles to the nameless soldiers are all expertly voiced. The newest feature to appear in this game is the multiplayer, The multiplayer offers a plethora of game modes, although it lacks a split screen. The whole multiplayer experience is amazing, the action cane really heat up with no noticeable slowdown, except if you have a crappy internet connection. there are many maps, and many modes from deathmatch to 3 player co-op.

Over all this game swings and scores on all the fronts. This is the type of game that should be the norm from first party developers, sadly not many games from MS, Sony, or Nintendo have been this good. This game is certain to be game to own if you have a PS3. This game will step into video game legend.

Und es ist wieder so weit. Wie jedes Jahr steht das Duell an, zwischen PES 2010 vs. Fifa 10.  Und wieder stellt sich der Fußballbegeisterten Menge die Frage, welches Spiel besser ist. Für mich als alter PES Fan ist natürlich PES das Nonplusultra. Aber in den letzten Jahren hat sich Fifa zu einem guten Konkurrenten gemausert. Auch dieses Jahr wird es sicherlich ein knappes Duell, dabei hat Fifa 10 bei den Wertungen (aktueller Durchschnitt: 89 %; die guten Wertungen gelten aber nur für die Konsolenversionen, die PC Version ist leider sehr mager ausgefallen) und den Verkaufszahlen schon vorgelegt. Allein in Europa sind in den ersten beiden Tagen, schon über 1,35 Millionen Einheiten verkauft worden. Es wird sich zeigen ob hier PES 2010 mithalten kann. Grafisch kann das Spiel schon jetzt überzeugen, wie man an der deutschen Nationalelf sehen kann.

Der Erscheinungstermin für den PC, Xbox 360 und PS 3 ist am 22. Oktober. Die PES Versionen für Nintendo Wii und PSP erscheinen im November.

As many of you know, the new PS 3 Slim was released early September. It is now offered at $299 with a 120 gb hard drive. It still goes above and beyond many other gaming platforms, because of it’s media functionality, Blue-ray player, and stunning games.

Pros- Great home media center, built in blue-ray, built in wifi, FREE online features

Cons- No backwards compatibility with PS 2 games, online not as developed as Xbox

I’ve had a PS3 for nearly a year now, and I must say, it’s one of the best purchases I’ve ever made. It’s a little difficult to purchases why, but I’ll give it a go.

I’m a huge movie buff, I have an extensive DVD collection and I’m really interested in effects, cinematography and the film making process in general. After the format war was over BluRay was my next inevitable step. The Market at the time had a few good BluRay players for around £280, some had really slow disc load times, some you could update on-line, but this required connecting it via Ethernet to your router, not very practical. This got me thinking about the PS3 as a BluRay player. It was £300 with one game, was arguably the best player in the Market, it had wifi for connecting to your home network, bluetooth, you could do all the usual things like play CDs DVDs. But you could also play divx, xvid, mpeg 4, mp3, jpeg images etc. This seemed like a no brainer.

So after work one day I stomped down to my local Curries and bought myself a shiny new PS3 with Little Big Planet. It was when I got it home I remembered that this was a full powered gaming beast. Little Big Planet has some lovely graphics and an a fantastic physics engine that had me wondering if my skateboard was heavy enough to knock over a large cardboard cutout of my head! (If you don’t know what I’m talking about, you haven’t played it, and don’t worry about it). So I went out and got some serious gamer games, Metal Gear Solid 4 and Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare. Holy crap this this was amazing, not only was it a fast snappy BluRay player which updates itself though the wifi, it was the best games station I’d ever played. Now at this point I should mention, I had played the Xbox 360, but not to any large extent. I know it’s an extremely good gaming platform, but lets not forget the red ring of death problems and also … there is no BluRay player.

I continued to enjoy these games when I could (we have a 5 month old baby), an also invested in a few more. The thing I found most useful was watching post-casts and videos I had collected from the web. I would put these on the PS3 via a USB key. After a few weeks of doing this I suddenly thought ‘hold on a frakin minute! This thing has wifi’ Wondering if I could copy my media over wifi from my Mac. A little web research got me to nullriver software. They do a PS3 media server that runs on the Mac. I think it cost around £15. This thing was amazing, you can browse the folder structure of your mac select movie/music files and play/stream them … right of your mac. Now nullriver went one further, the software talks directly to the iLife apps on your mac. So you can also access your pictures in iPhoto, including albums, events etc, also your playlists, podcasts, TV shows, movies in iTunes. Now … Quicktimes don’t play on the PS3 so only my mpg, divx and xvid files would play. There is a free open source PS3 media server called … er ‘PS3 Media Server’ that will transcode Quicktimes in realtime! However, I’ve had some trouble with it lately, hopefully those lovely open source kids will have it fixed by the time I post this. The solution I use at the moment for watching Quicktimes is Vuze. Vuze is a free bittorent client, they have a beta version of a PS3 server built in! It transcodes the Quicktimes to mp4 before serving them up to the playstation.

Extremely impressed with my PS3 (to the extent that my friends roll their eyes every time mention it), I decided to invest in the playTV add-on. PlayTV adds a TV tuner to the PS3, the software that comes with it basically turns the PS3 into a PVR! You can pause live TV, as well as watch one channel while recording another. You can also search the program guide for key words and or titles and set recordings. My wife absolutely love this as it means she can pause Strictly Come Dancing when if out son needs changing or the phone rings etc.

We don’t watch all of our TV though the PS3 though. This brings me to the worries I have with the system. The system can run quite hot, and although it’s never crashed on me, in my experience, systems that run this hot usually don’t last too long. There was a Watchdog show (investigation show about bad customer service) that had a feature about failing PS3’s. They said it was due to air bubbles in the solder that when over heated broke the solder thus rendering the PS3 dead! Apparently Sony UK has had 12,000 examples of this! Another thing that concerns me is the closed platform. For example, Sony will not implement RSS, why I have no idea. The PSP has RSS! Also the web cam doesn’t support anything other than PS3 games and chat! This renders Skype useless, I would be brilliant if I could video Skype from my couch.

Anyway, I still love it, and I haven’t even mentioned BBC iPlayer (in the UK). The up and coming motion sensor controller, playstation home etc.

The new Playstation 3 Slim has a generous 120 gig hard drive, built in wifi and bluetooth, it can play Blu Ray movies, and cuts the price down to $299, it also has a nasty surprise, no more Linux support.

If you thought you were going to snap up a new PS3 Slim on the cheap and replace your bulky desktop PC, you can think again, Sony has removed support for booting into Linux and won’t give any good reasons why.

When asked why they did this, Sony responded:

“There are a couple of reasons. We felt we wanted to move forward with the OS we have now. If anyone wants to use previous models and change the OS, they can do so.” Koller said. “We wanted to standardize our OS.”

The real reason for “standardizing” their OS is probably really because people found out how to dump Blu Ray movie discs from within the Linux environment, and Sony is closing that hole by wiping out Linux entirely rather than just tweaking the hypervisor to not allow the exploit.

Sony also can’t like competing with their own expensive line of “Vaio” PCs. I mentioned this back in 2006 when the Linux support was originally announced. The PS3 Slim kind of caught my eye until I noticed that little tidbit.

This is not only bad news for Sony customers, but also for Linux vendor Terrasoft Solutions who make the official PS3 Linux, their Yellow Dog distribution. Terrasoft already had the first major blow to their PowerPC Linux system when Apple announced in 2005 that it was going to start using commodity x86 PC components to build its line of Macintosh computers.

The move by Sony leaves Terrasoft with one line of computers that can still run their Linux distribution, IBM PowerPC-based servers and workstations, and there’s probably almost no money in that since they all come pre-loaded with Red Hat, Suse, or IBM’s own AIX operating system. I would expect that Terrasoft will either become “just another x86 distro” or announce bankruptcy soon.

The PS 3 Slim is released today at Gamescom as rumoured and it will be on sale on September 1st for 299 USD

Update: I juz went to EB games in Melbourne Central earlier today and can confirm that they will have the PS 3 Slim in stock by September 3rd for AUD 499.

. It will have no backward compatibility, 2 USB ports instead of 4, tactile buttons instead of touch, matte logo instead of gloss, about 50% slimmer but does not come with HDMI cable (which is a big boo) and you cant install a Linux OS on it. It will have a larger HDD as standard which is 120 GB.

It is now available for pre-order in the US (once again sadface) at major retailers and websites such as Amazon.com, Kmart, and FYE. Germany, Saturn is selling it as well.

All in all beside the apparent size drops, the current crop of PS 3 to me is still a better buy, especially at the current price. Unless the lack of space is making you think of the slim and you like the look of it, there is little reason to buy the slim.

Half Life’ın yapımcısı olan Valve firması Playstation 3 ile yollarını ayırma kararı aldı.

Yapımcı ve oyunculardan gelen eleştirilere rağmen fiyatı halen yüksek olan PlayStation 3′ün destekçileri azalıyor. Oyun fiyatlarının da yüksek olması yapımcı firmaları zorladığı için oyun üretme konusunda tereddütler yaşanmaya başladı. Bunlardan biri olan oyun üreticisi Valve, PS3 için oyun geliştirmeyeceklerini açıkladı.

Valge’den yapılan açıklamada, geliştirmekte oldukları Left 4 Dead isimli oyunlarının PS3′te yayınlanmasının bazı zorluklarla karşılaştığı belirtilirken bundan sonraki oyunlarında Playstation 3′e yer vermeme kararı aldıklarını söylendi. While other companies like Blockbuster continue to have troubles in the movie rental business, Netflix continues to expand. In its latest offering, Netflix is going to be offering movie streams to owners of the popular Sony PS3 units. Current Netflix users with the $8.99 a month package for unlimited DVD rentals are automatically included in the movie stream currently being offered.

Next month, the 9 million U.S. owners of Sony’s PlayStation 3 game consoles will have another entertainment option available to them: streaming movies and TV shows from Netflix.

The long-awaited announcement gives Netflix another distribution channel for its “Watch Instantly” service, which is already available via the Microsoft Xbox 360, a variety of Blu-ray players and HDTVs, TiVo and the Roku box.

Here is how it will work:

The PS3 implementation of Netflix is not the most elegant. PS3 owners will have to order a special, free disc from Netflix and pop it into their gaming console whenever they want to access the Netflix queue and watch a movie. Sony and Netflix seem to suggest this is a short-term solution, until an upgrade next year in the PS3 software.

It would appear that Netflix will continue to be the dominant force in the movie rental business along with Redbox outlets. As Netflix continues to expand its offerings there may come a time when we will be able to rent the latest DVD and Blu-ray disks online and have them streamed to our computers and TVs.

Movie-rental service to begin offering video streaming to all of its subscribers who own a Sony console in November; requires Blu-ray disc to access at first, firmware update coming next year; Microsoft unfazed.

It’s official: Netflix is coming to the PlayStation 3. The Los Gatos, CA-based movie-rental company announced this morning that it was bringing its video streaming service to its subscribers who own Sony’s console next month. The installed base of the PS3 is 9 million units in the US, with 11.1 million Americans subscribing to Netflix’s mail-based DVD-rental service.

Today’s announcement comes nearly a year after Netflix began offering video streaming via the Xbox 360. Under that arrangement, only subscribers of the premium-level Xbox Live Gold can use Netflix on their consoles. However, any PS3 owner who is a Netflix subscriber will be able to use the video-rental service at no additional cost.

While free, Netflix on the PS3 will require some setting up. Starting next month, the company will begin mailing out a free Blu-ray disc, which will use the console’s BD-Live technology to connect to video-streaming servers. Once inserted, the disc will let players access and edit their Netflix cues, a functionality not currently available on the 360–but which will be added in next month’s Xbox Live dashboard update. The disc can be reserved by visiting www.netflix.com/ps3.

[UPDATE] Speaking with GameSpot, Netflix vice president of corporate communications Steve Swasey confirmed that a firmware update to add Netflix directly to the PS3 XrossMediaBar (XMB) is coming next year. He also said the service will offer the same HD options as streaming on the 360 and PC, but that the 360 viewing parties are a Microsoft initiative, and it would be up to Sony to create an equivalent.

The PS3-Netflix deal was made public after months of both Microsoft and Netflix touting their deal as exclusive. However, it is not a surprise, as the latter company indicated in April that it was looking at console streaming on a ‘variety of platforms’ and hired a console chief with connections to both the PS3 and the Wii. Then, last month, CEO Reed Hastings told Reuters that “eventually we want to be on all the game consoles, all the Blu-ray players, all the Internet TVs.”

For its part, Microsoft seems unfazed by the PS3-Netflix deal. The company confirmed to GameSpot that a Xbox Live Gold membership will continue to be required to use Netflix on the 360. It also issued the following statement:

“The Netflix experience on Xbox Live is unique and reflects our commitment for social entertainment. We believe we offer an experience today that is a generation ahead of what others are offering. For a little over $4 a month, Xbox Live Gold membership is hands-down the best value in home entertainment, and gives you exclusive access multiplayer gaming and early demos as well as Facebook, Twitter, Netflix, Last.fm, 1 vs 100 and more.”

Dragon Age on XBOX 360

BioWare’s dark fantasy RPG marches on factory; Sony edition to launch alongside its PC, 360 brethren in North America, but will still trail in EU.

Over five years after it was first announced, Dragon Age Origins has gone gold. Today’s announcement came over a year after Electronic Arts dated the role-playing game for the first quarter of 2009. It was subsequently delayed until October 20 before being pushed back yet again to November 3 on the PC and Xbox 360.

With an ambiguous “November launch” window, the PlayStation 3 version of Dragon Age was set to trail the other versions. However, today in a live chat session held by Sony this morning, BioWare cofounder and EA role-playing game chief Ray Muzyka announced that the PS3 edition would launch alongside its 360 and PC siblings on November 3. Muzyka also confirmed the game’s PlayStation Trophies would correspond to the Xbox Live achievements found in the 360 version.

Unfortunately for European gamers, BioWare still plans on releasing the PS3 edition of Dragon Age: Origins after the PC and 360 versions launch November 6. “[We're] still working on the EU release timing for PS3,” said Muzyka. “We’ll have an announcement on that shortly–[it's] still planned for some time a bit later in November.”

Dragon Age: Origins is described by BioWare as a “dark heroic fantasy role-playing game.” It will be rated M for Mature for language, partial nudity, sexual content, intense violence and blood,

although Muzyka said the gore can be toned down by the viscera-adverse.

Billed as a spiritual successor to the classic Baldur’s Gate, Dragon Age: Origins will be jam-packed with BioWare’s signature plot-altering choices and moral shades of gray. It will offer players six origin stories based on their character’s social station and race: dwarf noble, dwarf commoner, city elf, Dalish elf, human noble, or mage. Those separate stories will tie into a larger narrative about the Grey Wardens, a mysterious order of knights guarding civilization from an ancient evil. The game will feature 60 to 80 hours of gameplay, with the first installment in two years of downloadable content expansions available at launch.

I am using the PS3 to link my computer with my TV using the PlayOn media server program. I can watch Netflix, Hulu, [...] and several other sites on my large screene TV. The picture quality is excellent and the sound is good using the HDMI connection. I installed an optical cable and now I also get excellent sound. The instructions for using the system for this purpose are not great but by going through the menus it is fairly easy to set up the video and audio.

You will need to have an N router, fairly good (1.5 or better) internet service and media server program such as PlayOn to make it work correctly. Using this system and an antenna, I was able to eliminate cable TV giving me a substantial monthly saving.

I would certainly purchase again.

Of course I am a Ratchet and clank junkie so when they first came out I had to get the ps3 for the new ratchet..I am disappointed about the fact that it doesnt save alot of my ps2 games while playing and cannot play any of the ratchet and clank ps2 games on itand it plays most of them in slow motion.But as for ps3 games it rocks.I only had it little over one year and had to send it in because it quit reading any type of disc,but it was fixed and promply returned to me and is working fine now.
