Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10

Two days ago I posted about Android catching up to the iPhone and wished for an Android powered PSP. I wrote about this before here and here. Well it does not seem far fetched now with the new Android-powered Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10. Engadget has more on the pre-production model here and GIZMODO here. Looks like Sony still has some few hurdles to overcome to deliver on this phone. However, poking around online, I found the following piece:

Sony Ericsson’s head of portfolio planning, Steve Walker, said that this is just the start, and that in future we’ll see closer integration with other Sony products, though he wouldn’t comment as to whether the PS3 was a possibility, via Remote Play like the Sony Ericsson Aino.

Given that Sony barely released the PSP GO recently, I don’t see them investing in a new handheld console-phone combo platform right now. Coupled with the upcoming PSP versions of LittleBigPlanet, Assassin’s Creed and Rock Band, the PSP is getting back some attention that has been focused on the PS3 for the past couple of years.

Lets look at some numbers. According to Joystiq here, Sony has lost close to $4.7 Billion dollars on the PS3 so far. Also according to VGChartz, Sony has sold 25.74Million PS3 units so far compared to 52.31Million PSP units. The Xbox360 launched a year earlier than the PS3 and their total sales so far is 32.78Million units. That’s not too bad. By end of April next year, I think we will have a good idea of the PS3’s overall performance in this generation. It seems to me that by April 2010, Sony will have shown most of their cards for the PS3. I say April 2010, because FF XIII, God Of War III, and Gran Turismo 5 will all be out by then (MAG, Heavy Rain, and The Last Guardian may all be out by then too). These titles should enable Sony to capture a lot of the PS2 users back to their side. Knowing that the PS2 sold over 138 million units as of August 18, 2009, the potential to sell more PS3s is huge.

If this generation cycle manages to stay for 10 years, there is a big chance for Sony to recoup its losses on the PS3. I got to all these numbers just to see if its feasible financially to create a PSP phone.

Here it is  here folkes the new PSP  Go,  any one will think when they see this is,  how are my thumbs “gonna” navigate around that thing, what would happen for me is that every time my thumb stretches towards the analog ill be feeling the start menu [-_-]. I love this the compact design but its just no where near practical where it comes on to gaming where you have to move your fingers briskly. It’s not cheap at all, it costs $249.99, and you have to buy ALL your video games, its not like the PSP where you could “legally” {=p] download the games for $0.00 or borrow a videogame from your friend…you know trading. It will come with a 16gb hard drive also [no more memory cards], can you rock out to your mp3’s on this bad boy =], no you can’t. This “to-be” new kid on the block  should be coming this fall. he Sony rumor that just won’t die has reared its potentially beautiful head again: a PSP phone may be in the works. The latest back room rumblings come courtesy of Japan’s Nikkei Business Daily, which says Sony is about to open up a new department that will explore a “cell phone-game gear hybrid,” according to Reuters. Sony’s secret department could begin work as early as July, and so far the PlayStation maker is declining to comment on the rumors.

The obvious target of Sony’s rumored plan is Apple’s iPhone. Since the introduction of the iPhone 3G, gaming has been front and center in Apple’s iPhone-iTunes App Store ecosystem. Mala hierba nunca muere, lo dice el dicho popular y lo vemos reflejado en los rumores más pesados, esos que cada cierto tiempo vuelven de entre los muertos para recordarnos que todavía siguen ahí. Volvemos pues a hablar de Sony y de su futuro teléfono / consola de videojuegos. Según el diario Nikkei Business, Sony Corp estaría a punto de empezar el proceso de diseño de un nuevo dispositivo, mezcla de la marca PlayStation y la gama de teléfonos Sony-Ericsson, para intentar desbancar al popular iPhone de Apple.

Sería durante este verano cuando se sentarían las bases del proyecto. Un proyecto que, recordemos, se había pedido desde Sony-Ericsson ya que consideraban que la implementación de marcas de la compañía japonesa a la gama de teléfonos móviles debía culminar con la tecnología de PlayStation.

De hecho no sería un movimiento nada raro, recordad que la gama de teléfonos móviles de Sony ya incorpora lentes Carl-Zeiss e incluso la marca “CyberShot”, así que llegar al terreno de los videojuegos podría ser el siguiente paso. Ahora bien, después de conocer a PSPGo y saber que va a convivir con PSP-3000, ¿puede el mercado aguantar una nueva PSP, esta vez con teléfono?. A mi me suena un tanto arriesgado, pero lo cierto es que el mercado que ha conseguido el teléfono de Apple bien vale el intento de desbancarlo.

Nikkei, one of the largest media conglomerates in Japan, is reporting that Sony has been working on a combination cellphone/game system for nearly a year. It’s a rumor we’ve been hearing for years, so what’s different this time?

Well, not much, really. Nikkei is a very solid source, definitely not prone to tossing plausible ideas around as actual reports. And of course, it’s been such a persistent rumor because it makes so much sense: Sony is an important player in both the cellphone (with Sony Ericsson) and gaming worlds, though Sony Ericsson has been struggling in recent years. Now that Capcom and Square Enix are developing games for the iPhone platform, it’s just about time for Sony to jump into the game and play a little catch-up.

The rumor itself is very vague: Nikkei says it will directly compete with the iPhone, and that a project team was set up last July to start working on the console/phone hybrid. So basically, it’s the same rumor we’ve been hearing for years, except this time from a reliable source. Whether it’s got any truth to it remains to be seen. Note: The above image is a mockup. As recently as May, Sony has itself stated that a PSP phone “could happen,” and now a report from Nikkei Business Daily states that Sony is planning on putting together a team as early as next month to build a product that would act as a combination of a PSP and a Sony Ericsson handset.  It makes plenty of sense, both as a differentiation from Nintendo and as a confrontation of the looming iPhone threat — and hey, it might also act as a decent salve over the lukewarm reception of the pricey PSPgo. Unfortunately, if Sony is just about to get started on this, we likely wouldn’t be looking at any resulting product for a while to come…

Volgens Nikkei, één van de grootste media bedrijven in Japan, is Sony bezig met een Playstation / PSP Phone.
Dit gerucht doet al een tijdje de ronde, dus vraagt men zich wel af hoeveel waarheid hierin schuilt.

Toch is Nikkei een zeer betrouwbare bron en kunnen ze het zich niet veroorloven om foute informatie te gaan verspreiden.  En het plaatje klopt natuurlijk; Sony die een belangrijke speler is in de mobiele wereld alsook in de gaming wereld.

Afwachten maar wanneer we dit mogen verwelkomen.

Sony is planning a PSP Phone, I would buy one.

It is very nice. This psp is useful to many use. This portable playstation is easy to carry. This is also work in ps3 games. This is mainly manufacture by video games. If you buy the psp it have to charge the psp like cellphone. But this is only one player is play must. But it also its very nice. I buy the psp i play and enjoy

the psp-3000 is an odd one. sony seem to have lost focus with the psp over the last few years. an improved screen alone isn’t going to attract many new owners and few existing owners will feel the need to upgrade as existing models are already graced with great displays

of all the things people wanted from sony; more games, more downloadable content, a slide-out keyboard, a less painful to use analogue nub, bluetooth, splitting and moving the stupid hold/power switch, the fabled psp-phone… i’m sure a new screen wasn’t high on anyone’s list

this is a minor revision and not a new model in my mind. psp-2500 if you like. i could see the point if sony were intending to tie something like their newly announced free psp wif-fi service in with a ‘direct to psp’ film distribution network or something… but i won’t be holding my breath

Oui mais pas chez Sony… En effet un japonais a réussi à intégrer un portable à écran tactil dans le capot UMD de sa PSP. Bon le lecteur UMD n’est plus utilisable mais quand même respect!

Making phone calls with the PSP Gaming Console? Is Sony really planning to “tune” the PSP in such a way that it also becomes a mobile phone?
My opinion; Sony will wait at least another year before they will launch an all-in-one PSP2 device => mobile phone, gaming console, smarter design (lighter & smaller) & mobile office!

Un site anglais dit que Sony travaillerait avec son partenaire Sony Ericsson sur un Playstation Phone. Le téléphone reprendrait certains éléments de la PSP. On ne connaît pas le design du téléphone mais sa sortie serait prévue pour 2008. D’autres sources au Japon et en Corée indiqueraient que Sony préparerait un modèle téléphone de la PSP, mais encore d’autres sources indiqueraient que Sony et Sony Ericsson serait figé, donc qu’un Playstation Phone ne serait pas à prévoir…

Qui croire??? Y aura-t-il un Playstation Phone? On verra bien
