On Sunday, my husband and I celebrated our three month wedding anniversary. I was going through pictures and thought I would share a very small piece of our journey.

We got engaged in October 2007 in the Green Mountains in Vermont on, what I thought was an innocent hike. I was truly surprised, especially when I was admiring the rushing waterfall and noticed it was oddly quite. I turned around and he was down on one knee!!

We have always dreamed of living a peaceful, organic, happy existence and in our hearts we knew that LI could not offer us the wide open spaces we yearned for. In August 2008, we fled the suburbs and relocated to State College, PA. Here is a short summary of what happened: We were driving through PA one day on our way back from Ohio after attending a family event. We took a small detour to explore Penn State and Happy Valley after a family member gave us a tip to visit the Penn State Creamery. So we did, we stopped for a drippy, delicious cream cone, and sat outside gazing at the gorgeous mountains and sprawling farms. It was settled! We could live here, we could start a life here! We planned and plotted for two months and then early one morning in August 2008, we packed up his Oldsmobile Allero and my Jeep Wrangler and hit the road not looking back (we gave our family two weeks notice, which was plenty of time to digest our plans, right?). We did not know a soul or a thing about our new town, but it was truly the most amazing thing we ever have done.
This is our first apartment together in a basement of what turned out to be a very nice neighborhood.

Aahh in May of 2009, this is where the fun began.. We bought our first house!! And we adopted our first pet on the same day as closing. We literally closed on the house and swung by PAWS in the Uhaul truck and picked up our little cat, Mayberry. We know know why she is crazy, she has parents that are a bit off the wall.

We affectionately call our house “the box of love”.

If that was not enough excitement for one lifetime, we decided it was time to get married and and wanted to do all the planning ourselfves (we gave our families three months this time). We figured, why not? We could pull it off! On August 22, 2009, we threw a country wedding in our backyard. It was completely DIY from the invitations to the side dishes, decorations, red velvet cupcakes, you name it we did it. That is a whole other story in itself. We had the guests document the day on disposable cameras in lieu of a photographer. It turns out the pictures came out far better than I could have imagined.

It’s been a busy couple of weeks on the project. I had a few vacation days left to take at work, so I nabbed a week off and put it to good use making some progress. With the basic shell assembled and painted, I wanted to get onto the basic computing power for the sim, and in particular to creating the various mountings needed to place the various bits in the shell.

As I mentioned in a previous installment, I plan on putting all the computing and electronics gear needed for the sim into the shell itself, so that it’s essentially self-contained. This contrasts with some other sims where the computing power is a stack of beige boxes lined up against the next-door wall – there’s nothing wrong with that approach, I just wanted something that was all-in-one.

In Phase 1, the sim will be powered by four PCs: two ‘conventional’ PCs, an HP tablet PC and a recycled Asus R2 ultra-mobile PC (UMPC) that I happened to have lying around doing nothing. One conventional PC (PC1) will power the main display and nothing else at all – most likely I’ll even have sound disabled on this machine so that all the CPU power available goes to rendering the front view and get the frame rates up as high as I possibly can. The second conventional PC (PC2) will run the left and right-hand screens that will serve as PFD/MFD in glass cockpit aircraft, and analog panels in others, and will also be the place where most of the controls (yoke etc) plug in via USB. The tablet PC (PC3) will serve as an additional control panel display, but – with its touch screen – will also be a control center, where the custom screens I’m planning to write to control aspects of the sim itself and of simulated aircraft where I have no physical controls available – engine fuel feeds, for example – will also run. Running off PC3 will be a second, 7″ touchscreen monitor which will be physically located in the pedestal and will provide a radio stack. Lastly, the UMPC (PC4) will be located in the pedestal and will serve as CDU, weather radar and various ancillary screens that would normally appear in that position.

By way of specs, PC1 is powered by a quad-core Q9450 chip which runs stock at 2.66GHz but can be clocked to 3.2GHz and even a bit further quite happily in my experience; PC2 runs on an older quad-core Xeon X3210 which runs stock at 2.13GHz but I have been able to push to 2.7GHz reliably. Neither of these are as fast as you can get, although the Q9450 overclocked is very competitive with anything else in the Core 2 Quad range. Both boards have 4GB DDR2-800 RAM on them. For now I’m holding off going to Core i7, though at some point I’ll most likely want to do so for the main rendering board. PC3, the tablet, uses a Core 2 mobile chip running at 3GHz and has 2GB RAM on board, with a 13″ 4:3 touch (sadly not multi-touch) screen. PC4, the UMPC, is rather underpowered compared to all the others, designed as it was as a small, low-heat platform. It runs a Pentium 4-class Celeron at a meagre 900MHz and sports a rather insipid 1GB of RAM, but since its purpose in the sim is to run a single panel at a time and be touch-sensitive, this it does reasonably well. It’s also the only PC in the solution which will be running Windows XP rather than Windows 7, simply for the hardware support and memory overhead.

PC1 and 2 exist in the form of bits and pieces – motherboard, CPU etc pulled together from previous projects and upgrades with some bought new for the project. They are not complete PC systems; although one is made from parts mostly pulled from a server which had a case and was in use as a development server, I am not attempting to install a whole PC enclosure inside the shell – it just wouldn’t fit. Instead I’m going for a barebones approach and as such, I needed to construct an enclosure and mounting system for these PCs within the main shell.

Originally I was going to put one board on the left-hand side of the console at the rear, and the other on the right, but a quick check of dimensions proved that I wouldn’t have room left to mount the control yokes, and I can’t re-size those. I then settled on a plan to mount them in a double-decker style in the middle of the console behind the mounting for the tablet PC, where there will be no embedded control hardware. This left me needing to fashion some form of enclosure.

Since wood, rather than metal, is my medium for this project, it would be necessary to create a wooden frame. This would be open to maximise airflow. I set out by measuring up the ATX motherboard dimensions and then cutting out two panels of 6mm MDF with a 20mm margin around the edges to provide room to place support structures. In the event I mis-measured and left only a 10mm margin and was forced to adapt a little later on rather than start again. I used scrap wood left over from earlier in the build, which is why the finished result doesn’t look hugely polished; as it’ll never be seen in normal use, it doesn’t need to be, and my stock of untouched MDF can be used for other purposes.

Next I took a scrap old AMD K7 motherboard (which is ancient, but ATX has stayed the same for countless years so it was fine as a template I could afford to get dirty and broken) and used this to mark the positions of the screw-holes where the board is screwed into the retainers. I had to pop off to Maplin to get a packet of motherboard retaining bolts so I could populate out the board with them.

Putting retaining bolts onto the 'bottom deck' board

Once this was done with both boards I measured the height of a standard PC expansion card to the retaining rail where the card is screwed in, as I would need to provide a similar support structure in my frame. I then cut some pine baton down to the right length to act as supports for the top deck, and positioned these around the edge of the bottom board.

Support pillars in place, with K7 motherboard in as a test

Into the top of each pillar I drilled a deep 4mm hole to accomodate a machine screw. I then drilled a wider 8mm hole, 4mm deep, at the top of each 4mm hole – this was, in hindsight, the wrong way to do it. I should have drilled the larger hole first and then I’d have had a better guide for the smaller hole; but with a drill press this is immaterial provided you keep the material fixed in the right place. Into the larger hole I placed a nut for a 4mm machine screw and glued it into place. I could then screw a 4mm bolt into the pillar with the nut acting as the anchor. Finally I drilled 4mm hole in the top deck board in the appropriate place, and could then mount one on top of the other.

A further two batons went on the bottom deck right at the rear of the structure, with two more directly above them on the top deck, cut and grooved to interlock to provide a single long baton running the full height of two boards + full-height expansion cards, and then into the top of those batons I drilled 6mm holese and put 6mm tee nuts to accomodate 6mm roofing bolts. A strip of MDF (made deliberately over-wide for reasons which will become clear later) went on top and provided a support structure for the expansion cards on the top deck. Two smaller strips of MDF were then run up the back of the vertical support batons and tee-and-bolt combinations placed in them at 3 locations to lock the whole structure together when assembled. The finished product looks like this:

Completed double-deck frame for PC1 and 2

This whole structure fits into the central part of the console and is bolted down with four bolts at the corners into the main shelf of the console.

Next, I needed to mount the power supply units to run these two PCs. Originally I tried constructing a shelf behind the PC enclosure, keeping the PSUs in place with artfully-bodged screws and a couple of angle-brackets (these actually work really well, and again, ‘polish’ wasn’t the aim here, so don’t knock it!).

PSU shelf, Take 1

Sadly, this pushed the main PC enclosure frame so far forward that the full-length graphics card used would foul the tablet PC mounting, so I had to abandon this. I went for the simplest thing that could work, which was to split the shelf in the middle and mount the two halves on the other side of the vertical divider in each case, like this:

PSU shelf, Take 2

An extra steel support bracket was used for each to help bear the weight of the PSU. Keeping the PSU up high like this to give clearance below for the other parts – notably the yoke assembly – is critical, so a shelf was necessary.

Once I tried to plug it all in for a test, of course, I discovered that the ATX power and P4 ancillary power leads on both PSUs were just too short to reach. In modern PCs the PSU is located close to the main board and there’s no need to have miles of free cable. While some PSUs provide more than others, one of the supplies I was using for the project had particularly short cables. No amount of bodging was going to fix this. So, a further trip to Maplin bought me a pair of ATX and P4 cable extensions, designed for installing PSUs into large server cases. With these, I was finally able to make all the connections with room to spare. Time to fire the PCs up and make sure they still work!

It lives! Both PCs fired up and running.

To my relief, both of them fired up immediately, so I shut them down, put the displays for PFD and MFD into place on the front panel, and connected them up. You’ll have to take my word that they’re working in the picture below, because my lousy phone camera is unable to deal with the contrast in the shot and is overwhelmed by the glare (I must remember to recharge my proper camera and start using that for picture-taking):

No, it's not the Amityville Horror house...

Each PC will now be outfitted with a brand new solid-state drive (SSD) which should help it go like lightning, reduce noise and power consumption and – importantly – heat. Because neither needs much local storage, I’m putting 60GB models in both. The tablet and UMPC both have small laptop HDDs which I will leave in for now.

Next up is work on the yoke. I need to convert a standard CH Products yoke, adding 120mm to its shaft length, and finding a way to fit it permanently into the console. Soldering iron time…

Scientist’s E-Mail Cites ‘Trick’ to ‘Hide the Decline’ on Climate Change

DAVID STRINGER

LONDON (Nov. 21) — Computer hackers have broken into a server at a well-respected climate change research center in Britain and posted hundreds of private e-mails and documents online — stoking debate over whether some scientists have overstated the case for man-made climate change.

The University of East Anglia, in eastern England, said in a statement Saturday that the hackers had entered the server and stolen data at its Climatic Research Unit, a leading global research center on climate change. The university said police are investigating the theft of the information, but could not confirm if all the materials posted online are genuine.

More than a decade of correspondence between leading British and U.S. scientists is included in about 1,000 e-mails and 3,000 documents posted on Web sites following the security breach last week.

Some climate change skeptics and bloggers claim the information shows scientists have overstated the case for global warming, and allege the documents contain proof that some researchers conspired to manipulate data.

The furor over the leaked data comes weeks before the U.N. climate conference in Copenhagen, when 192 nations will seek to reach a binding treaty to reduce emissions of carbon dioxide and other heat-trapping greenhouse gases worldwide. Many officials — including U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon — regard the prospects of a pact being sealed at the meeting as bleak.

Within a decade, summers in the North Pole will be dramatically different: no ice and just an open sea. That is the prediction released Oct. 14 by explorers who have hiked through the area. Here, research vessels on an unrelated expedition break through ice near the North Pole in 2004.

A new report examines the human cost of climate change, which it said causes more than 300,000 deaths per year. The report, released in May, shows the impact of climate change on population displacement, malnutrition and diseases, such as malaria. “Climate change is not something waiting to happen,” said former U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan.

In one leaked e-mail, the research center’s director, Phil Jones, writes to colleagues about graphs showing climate statistics over the last millennium. He alludes to a technique used by a fellow scientist to “hide the decline” in recent global temperatures. Some evidence appears to show a halt in a rise of global temperatures from about 1960, but is contradicted by other evidence which appears to show a rise in temperatures is continuing.

Jones wrote that, in compiling new data, he had “just completed Mike’s Nature trick of adding in the real temps to each series for the last 20 years (i.e., from 1981 onwards) and from 1961 for Keith’s to hide the decline,” according to a leaked e-mail, which the author confirmed was genuine.

One of the colleague referred to by Jones — Michael Mann, a professor of meteorology at Pennsylvania State University — did not immediately respond to requests for comment via telephone and e-mail.

The use of the word “trick” by Jones has been seized on by skeptics — who say his e-mail offers proof of collusion between scientists to distort evidence to support their assertion that human activity is influencing climate change.

“Words fail me,” Stephen McIntyre — a blogger whose climateaudit.org Web site challenges popular thinking on climate change — wrote on the site following the leak of the messages.

However, Jones denied manipulating evidence and insisted his comment had been taken out of context. “The word ‘trick’ was used here colloquially, as in a clever thing to do. It is ludicrous to suggest that it refers to anything untoward,” he said in a statement Saturday.

Jones did not indicate who “Keith” was in his e-mail.

Two other American scientists named in leaked e-mails — Gavin Schmidt of NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies in New York, and Kevin Trenberth, of the U.S. National Center for Atmospheric Research, in Colorado — did not immediately return requests for comment.

The University of East Anglica said that information published on the Internet had been selected deliberately to undermine “the strong consensus that human activity is affecting the world’s climate in ways that are potentially dangerous.”

“The selective publication of some stolen e-mails and other papers taken out of context is mischievous and cannot be considered a genuine attempt to engage with this issue in a responsible way,” the university said in a statement.

Eileen started volunteering during her summer breaks when she was a nursing teacher at Clackamas Community College. Her students, who had to participate in the volunteer program, had exceptional things to say about the experience. She started volunteering year round once she retired from teaching.

When asked what advice she would give to anyone interested in volunteering with the MacDonald Center, Eileen responded:

“The volunteer gets more out of it than anybody. I really do think it changes your whole outlook on things. I feel valued when I do it and I value the people that I see. When I walk around here and catch the Max and I see all the people laying in their sleeping bags and all the trash, I have a totally different understanding of that than what I hear other people say. I don’t have the same negative behavior that I might have had if I wasn’t seeing people going from the street into a building and into a place that’s so bad, and yet some of those people are actually volunteering. They’re actually going out and doing something for someone else. I think it’s the whole humanity piece that I see that I can only appreciate by being down here every week. I’ll probably do it until I can’t walk anymore (laughs). My family knows, Wednesday is my day, this is it.”

Eileen also writes for a small pamphlet called “Daily Bread.” She writes about various day to day experiences, but also about her time with the MacDonald Center. She wrote this in one issue:

“My friend Marilyn and I walked the nine or ten blocks from the MacDonald Center to the Rosenbaum Hotel – a single room occupancy dwelling for the formerly homeless. Our list contained the names of the ‘friends’ we were to visit on this day. In most instances, we were greeted kindly and invited into the room of a resident who suffered from alcoholism, poverty, difficult times or mental illness. Once inside, we sometimes found deplorable conditions, filth beyond our sense of tolerance, body odors and cigarette smoke that permeated the air. But this was home, a roof over the head, a shelter from the streets below and from the inclement weather conditions suffered by the street people.

The visits, unexpectedly for us, turned out to be enjoyable, fun, exhilarating, and even challenging in exploring stories, beliefs and opinions of our new-found friends and acquaintances. On our return from the hotel to the MacDonald Center one day for our ‘debriefing’ session, Marilyn and I talked of our amazement at how fast the time had gone by, how much we enjoyed these visits, and that we had been the recipients of the greater gift, the sharing of their lives and their hospitality with us. While we had initially been interested in participating as volunteers, hoping to be of some help to the ’shut-ins,’ we came away each time with our own lives enriched”.

SEBI’s has planned to remove the cap price for the follow-on public offerings and this idea seems to be impressing market players.

SEBI has said that it would introduce “pure auction as an additional book building mechanism for institutional investors for follow-on public offerings (FPOs).”

Analysts and market men feel that this is going to generate loads of excitement and fun for market players, as those investors who are convinced about a particular issue will invest at a higher price to seek allotment and those not-so-convinced can invest at a lower price.

Merchant bankers said it will be interesting to see how this will work as there are a few PSU FPOs likely to hit the market soon.

PSUs likely to come out with FPOs include NMDC, MMTC, Neyveli Lignite Corporation, Rashtriya Chemicals and Fertilizers, National Fertilizers, Coal India and Engineers India

As of now, the IPO price is determined through a price band (which has a lower and upper level).

An auction or floor price is the minimum price at which bids can be made for an IPO.

Meanwhile, merchant bankers welcomed SEBI’s announcement on Monday that exchanges could have a separate platform for Small and Medium Enterprises (SME).

As the primary market size grows, the smaller companies are getting lost amid the big ticket IPOs.
Having such exclusive guidelines for SMEs is definitely a good idea, said merchant bankers.

SME platform SEBI on the lines of the AIM on the London Stock Exchange will be better.

Those SMEs with a paid-up capital of between Rs 10 crore and Rs 25 crore have an option of either being on the SME exchange or the main bourses.

According to the new guidelines, SMEs should have a maximum paid up capital of Rs 25 crore for listing.

For an investor the minimum application size in an SME IPO will now be Rs 1 lakh.

Though such a limit might seem like it will prevent the retail investor of small means from investing in SME IPOs, merchant bankers said that it is a good move.

“This will allow retail investors to take more informed decisions. It will protect these investors as the chances of manipulation with respect to smaller companies are much higher. Those investors with the right amount of knowledge and liquidity will be the ones investing in these IPOs,” said Mr Jagannadham Thunuguntla, Head of Equity at SMC Capital.

Having the merchant bankers underwriting the IPO will make sure that they price the issue properly and also provide proper valuations.

Merchant bankers are also happy that for an SME issue the minimum number of investors is only 50 for a particular issue.

“For an issue, as of now, there has to be a minimum of 1,000 investors,” said Mr Thunuguntla.

SC notice to Trai, telecom MAJORS
The Supreme Court has issued notice to 11 parties, including Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, Reliance Communications, Tata Teleservices, Vodafone Essar, on a petition by state-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited challenging removal of access deficit charge, a levy paid by private telecom operators for funding the PSU’s operations in rural and remote areas.
A Bench headed by Justice Altamas Kabir sought an reply from 11 repondents Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, Association ofUnified Telecom Service Providers of India, Reliance Communications, Tata Teleservices, Vodafone Essar Mobile Services, Cellular Operators Association of India, Bharti Airtel, Idea Cellular, BPL Mobile Communications, HFCL Infotel, and Spice Communications — as to why they should not pay ADC to BSNL.
The Bench also directed that payments, if any, shall be made during the pendency of the petition and the same shall be subject to final outcome of the hearing.
Access deficit charge was a levy paid by private telecom operators to BSNL for meeting the cost of unprofitable operations in rural areas for below the cost wire line and mobile services.
The telecom regulator had abolished ADC in 2008-09. In the two fiscals previous to that, the ADC was reduced. In 2007-08, the regulator had reduced ADC by 37 per cent to Rs 2,000 crore (Rs 20 billion) from Rs 3,200 crore (Rs 32 billion).
Challenging the Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal’s judgement that held that BSNL had no legal right to claim ADC from private telecom operators and Trai had rightly terminated it, BSNL said the entire exercise undertaken by the regulator was not only arbitary and irrational but also contrary to the principles of level-playing field.
Challenging Trai’s decision, BSNL contended the arbitrary elimination of ADC had disturbed the level-playing field in a cost-based Interconnect Usage Charge regime, thereby not allowing it to recoup the deficit incurred for providing below-cost wireline services and rural telephony.
The PSU said as IUC was cost-based, why it was being paid 23 paise for termination charges as against the statutorily fixed rateof 30 paise, thus depriving it of 7 paise.
“Trai had no authority or jurisdiction to deplete this huge sum of Rs 1500 crore (Rs 15 billion) — in every succeeding year — from the requisite amount of ADC payable to BSNL under IUC Regulations,” the petition stated.
Solicitor general Gopal Subramanium, appearing for BSNL, said Trai had disregarded the PSU’s submissions for an effective recouping mechanism for the requisite actual deficit for below cost services in accordance with the recognised principles.
According to the petition, the private operators had never made any investments for providing telephony in villages and remote areas despite having specific obligations under their licences.
“They have failed to provide the mandatory village telephones etc as specific licence obligations and remained to operate only in lucrative urban areas,” it said.
TDSAT, while holding that BSNL had no legal right to ADC, said “ADC has rightly been designed as a depleting regime rightly terminated in the year 2008-09 and the manner of calculating ADC each year was fair and reasonable, given the facts available with Trai.
“The Tribunal said BSNL did not have any reliable data over the quantum of loss suffered by it for its rural operations.
TDSAT had also rejected BSNL’s allegation over fixation of uniform termination charges for all wireline and wireless services.Besides, it said BSNL had failed to furnish any document, in its all three petitions, that the cost of mobile termination was actually one third of the cost of fixed lines services.”We do not find any basis to support the contention of BSNL that the mobile termination charges have been wrongly fixed,” the Tribunal said.

“You are going to love this sauce”

-Counter woman at Fernando’s Mundo Fiesta, referring to the Vegan Caesar wrap.

Fernando’s is another cart in Portland that you walk by one day, and notice there’s a big “VEGAN FRIENDLY” sign sitting outside. You thank the vocal vegans who have stopped by, or the considerate management, or both, and commence browsing their menu.

In the middle of the growing PSU area cart lot on SW 4th between College and Hall, Fernando’s beckons with their colorful signage, extensive, prominent menu, and on-the-go college student type meals. Like many other carts on this strip, Fernando’s has a small covered deck where you place your order, and step back on the sidewalk into the drizzle to wait. Their long menu, which is posted all around the counter window and on the deck, includes vegan options for salads, wraps, burritos, and there has been a vegan special featured on both of my visits.

I’ve tried the Vegan Caesar ($5) and the Vegan Tequila ($5.50) wraps. Both of these meals had the following in common:

The fillings were slick, no thanks to the oily dressings.

I had to hunt for the precious few pieces of tofu in each wrap. Slimy but decent, nopal cactus dominated the Caesar wrap; while equally slippery hearts of palm took over the Tequila. I counted maybe four miniature rectangles of tofu in the Tequila wrap.

Incredibly nice customer service from the counter woman taking and delivering orders.

Super quick service: receiving both wraps within mere minutes. If I was rushing between classes, I would not forget this.

Dry, but flexible tortillas.

The housemade Vegan Caesar dressing was flavorful, but it wasn’t creamy. I didn’t love it- I’m sorry, counter woman! It was gritty, perhaps there were nuts involved, and again, oily, like it could use some more time in a blender. Regardless, it did make things interesting in the wrap of lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, long pieces of green cactus (which always reminds me of a soft, sour bell pepper) and those few pieces of tofu. I liked the tang of the homemade Caesar, but the situation was alarmingly oily.

The Vegan Tequila wrap was a special of the day with the addition of hearts of palm; it’s on the regular menu with the bonus of meat or tofu, without the palm. It sounded exciting, with corn, spiced black beans, and their tequila sauce, but this one didn’t hold my interest at all. It was as if I had poured a little bit of black bean salsa into my wrap, and threw in a can of hearts of palm. I didn’t taste any tequila in this second oily sauce, or really any other flavor. I was a tragic incident of a wrap and I gave up with over half to go.

So should you go here at all? Keep it in mind if you’re frantically requiring a quick vegan meal in the PSU area to go, refuse to step into Chipotle and don’t have the patience to wait for a fantastic box from Asaase Ital around the corner. But realistically, particularly after reading about this reviewer’s experiences, are you interested? In a city full of vegan burritos and wraps, I don’t want to eat something I’m not enthusiastic for. There’s potential, and a considerate, friendly welcoming to vegans, but the cart doesn’t deliver on the quality.

If I found myself short on time and around this cart row, I’d half consider a Vegan Caesar salad with the dressing requested on the side, but there are other options that would leap into my head first: calling ahead at aforementioned Asaase Ital, Basha’s, Food for Thought, Hot Lips foccacia slices, and hopefully, coming very soon –the all vegetarian Valhalla moving to the neighborhood, to name a few.

Once again, my apologies to the sweet counter woman.

Thanks God for Your blessing today..!

Shaloom Aleichem..!
