Krishna... Elland Road trial.

WE ALREADY have our seemingly knowledgable world-wide scouting network to thank for Luciano Becchio (definitely), Mike Grella (one for the future), Rui Marques (of course) and Davide Soma (possibly).

And only a few days ago we learnt of another trialist, Argentinian defender Walter Garcia, who started the recent reserve game against Middlesbrough at centre half – we conceded four. So it wasn’t the best possible start for Garcia, but another player did impress.

Fijian winger Roy Krishna started the game on the wing and eventually found his way on to the scoresheet. Though it wasn’t enough as we lost 4-3 (Somma scoring the other two).

Krishna is contracted to Waitakere United in New Zealand but has recently been linked with a move to Europe – PSV Eindhoven have been touted as possible suitors.

He has represented Fiji eight times, scoring four goals.

It’s good to see Leeds United’s scouting network still covers the globe.

“Due to those oh so lovely television fixtures, matches in the Dutch Eredivisie are split this season over Friday/Saturday/Sunday. So it is possible to watch PSV and Ajax or Feyenoord matches over a long weekend if you so desire. For example on this particular weekend we had PSV v Vitesse Arnhem on Saturday evenong, Ajax v Feyenoord on Sunday lunchtime.  

I chose Amsterdam as base mainly as I know folk living there. Without upsetting Eindhoven Tourist Board, there appears frankly not much to tempt me to Eindhoven any earlier than arriving for match itself . Day return from Amsterdam central to Eindhoven is 32 euros. Trains take 1hr 20 mins approximately and departs hourly.

Still the case that at PSV as with Ajax and Feyenoord, locals can only watch matches with ID cards. Unless you borrow someone’s ID card to get voucher/ticket, you can take advantage of a scheme operated by the clubs where tourists can purchase tickets. PSV operate a Gold and Silver Package for tourists. Being from Yorkshire I opted for cheaper Silver Package. For this you pay 50 Euro and you get:

A 21 Euro for ticket in West Tribune. Better for atmosphere. Not so good if you want to see the choreography they undertook before match.
A 20 Euro voucher for fanshop if you want to surprise the Missus with a PSV duvet/lampshade,
And 10 Euro for food/munchie vouchers

Prices rise to 70 Euro for matches against Ajax , Feyenoord and AZ. Possible to pay euros on day of the match, but expect to pay an extra 15 Euro for privilige. Packages can be paid and collected on day of the match at our ticket office, entrance 27 of the stadium. Ticket office open 2.5 hours before kick off until 15 minutes after kick off.  Amsterdam Arena Tour/ Ajax Museum
If you are bored of visiting the Sex/Hemp/Torture/Anne Frank museums on the Amsterdam tourist trail, may I suggest a visit to the Amsterdam Arena, home of Ajax.  As ever check the Ajax website but normally vary between 5-7 tours daily.  Adults 10.50 Euro, kids 9.50 Euro. Lasting an hour, the enthusiastic guide will show you the: 

- The poor quality pitch and efforts made to maintain it under roof;
- Press room with a fantastic photograph of Ajax players in classic 60s pose;

Two tips to improve the tour. First, let the punters into the dressing room and allow them to walk onto the pitch. Secondly, why can’t the guide do the pitch visit/talk at the ‘home end’, with its opportunities to photograph the artistic graffiti of the F – Side fans. A talk at this point about supporters input into Ajax club would enhance the tour.

Tour ends with free entry to Ajax museum. As well as an impressive collection of European Cups, the museum was memorable for the great artifacts and momentos on display. Highlights for me included a photograph of a teenage Marco Van Basten, It was reasuring to see that if I did share Van Basten’s prodigous footballing talent, at least we both had bad skin and 80s casual haircut

Dinamikus, élvezetes mérkôzést játszott a Kolozsvári CFR a Dzsudzsák Balázzsal felálló PSV Eindhoven otthonában. Conceicao tanítványai végül 1–0-ás vereséget szenvedtek, de a második félidôben mutatott játékuk alapján vitathatatlanul kijárt volna nekik a döntetlen.

A PSV keményen kezdett, nem igazán engedték szóhoz jutni a kolozsváriakat az elsô játékrészben. Hangsúlyozottan elmondható ez az elsô fél óráról. Dzsudzsák többször is leiskolázta a vasutas gárda védelmét, mígnem a 9. percben egyik beadását Bakkal védhetetlenül küldte a kapuba.

A hazaiakat nem nyugtatta meg a gól, továbbra is magabiztos fölénnyel uralták a játékot. Dzsudzsák legalább három olyan beadást címzett a holland csapat csatárainak, amelyekbôl gól születhetett volna, de szerencsénkre – és a szerencse mellett Nuno Claro létfontosságú védéseinek köszönhetôen – nem született újabb találat.

A második játékrészben fordult a kocka: hogy mit mondott vagy mit nem mondott Conceicao a zsoldosainak, azt csak a jó ég tudja és a játékosok, de a CFR játéka radikálisan átbillent támadóba. A második 45 perc arról szólt, hogy a PSV kínlódott az egyenlítô gól ellen, a vendégek pedig azért, hogy 1–1 legyen.

Dzsudzsák is jóval kevesebbet villant, a PSV többet próbálkozott jobb szélen, de Lazovic és társai csak néhány alkalommal tudták veszélyeztetni Claro kapuját. Traorénak legalább öt gólhelyzete volt, többnyire fejjel értékesíthette volna a szögletbeadásokat, de nem sikerült neki. Az ô sajátos stratégiájával néha elbotladozott az ellenfél kapujáig, de vagy a kapus védett, vagy a labda vegyült el valahol a lábai között.

A 90 perc alapján úgy gondolom elfogultság nélkül elmondhatjuk, hogy a CFR megérdemelte volna a döntetlent. Ha nagyon okoskodó, de sokat nem mondó becslésekbe bocsátkoznák, azt mondanám, hogy az elsô félidô 90%-a a PSV-jé volt, de a második félidô 85%-a a CFR-é.

Nem lehetünk nagyon csalódottak az eredményben, mert a Phillips-stadionban nehéz gyôznie egy CFR-szintû csapatnak. A helytállás minden esetre olyannyira megvolt, hogy bízhatunk a PSV elleni hazi gyôzelemben. A csoportból való továbbjutás kérdése pedig nem kérdés és nem is kérés: szigorú elvárás!

A K csoport másik mérkőzésén a PSV-vel korábban döntetlent játszó Spárta Prága 1–0-ra kikapott az általunk 2–0-ra vert FC Koppenhágától, így a CFR 3 ponttal a második helyen áll.

Enquanto não calça as chuteiras e volta aos gramados, Romário tem cumprido bem a sua função de manager do América. Na última quarta-feira, quando o time rubro foi derrotado pelo Goytacaz no Giulite Coutinho, o Baixinho foi anfitrião do holandês, ex-companheiro seu dos tempos de PSV Eindhoven, Stan Valckx.

Aos 45 anos, Valckx, que disputou a Copa do Mundo de 1994 pelo seu País, também atua como manager de Futebol no Shangai (CHI), já exerceu essa função no próprio PSV, e está no Brasil para observar atletas.

Paso a paso, el fútbol húngaro se está abriendo un hueco en el panorama futbolístico actual. La que fuera una de las grandes potencias futbolísticas de los 50 (hasta que llegó el Brasil de Pelé) lleva mucho tiempo aletargada esperando una generación que les devuelva los grandes éxitos que pusieron a Hungría en lo más alto del deporte rey. Los grandes jugadores que empiezan a despuntar en las grandes ligas europeas o la clasificación del Debrecen para la fase de grupos de la Champions League la semana pasada son buenos síntomas de la recuperación de los magiares. Pero, sin duda, el mayor éxito del fútbol hungaro sería consecuencia de conjuntar los anteriores hechos: conseguir la clasificación para el Mundial 2010, tras 24 años sin clasificarse para una gran competición. Y ese objetivo puede empezar a conseguirse este mismo sábado.

Pero conviene no engañarse. Sería practicamente un milagro ver a los húngaros en Sudáfrica, por dos razones principales. La primera es el duro calendario que les espera en las pocas jornadas que quedan hasta el final de la fase de clasificación dentro de un mes. Cierto es que parten con una importante ventaja de 4 puntos, pero asusta mirar a los próximos rivales y ver un doble enfrentamiento contra Portugal, acompañado de dos partidos contra los otros dos cocos del grupo: Suecia y Dinamarca. Los dos partidos de esta semana serán claves para decidir este grupo 1, el de más nivel.

El más importante escollo se lo encontrarán los centroeuropeos en la Portugal de Carlos Queiroz, que está haciendo una gestión lamentable. Desde que cogió el banquillo luso se han sucedido pobres actuaciones y extraños experimentos – entre ellos, jugar un partido sin delanteros -. Están sufriendo horrores para sumar puntos fáciles, como en su último partido oficial ante Albania, en el que ganaron 0-1, con un gol en el descuento y sin mostrarse superiores a la débil selección balcánica. Ni siquiera su estrella, Cristiano Ronaldo, parece llegar en forma para sacar las castañas del fuego en un momento crítico en el que se puede quedar sin Mundial. Creo que podría ser un escarmiento al rumbo que ha tomado Portugal en los últimos tiempos, una decisión como poner a un entrenador del bajo nivel de Queiroz al cargo de una selección de semejante nivel se merece un castigo, desde luego. Si mañana no vencen en Dinamarca y Hungría tumba a una Suecia que también se aferra al último clavo, estarán fuera del Mundial a la espera de un milagro.

La segunda razón que presume harto difícil ver a Hungría en el Mundial es aún de más peso que la anterior. Dinamarca será, en principio, primera de grupo. Eso implica que el segundo -Hungría, Portugal o Suecia- deberá jugarse el pase en la repesca. Y el nivel de la repesca asusta este año: Francia, Bosnia o Turquía, Croacia, Rusia, etc… son posibles rivales para esa eliminatoria, y debemos sumar a la dificultad del rival la falta de experiencia en partidos a este nivel.

Pero también hay motivos para la esperanza. La caída del regimen comunista ha devuelto a las academias de fútbol los recursos necesarios para formar a los futbolistas de calidad que siempre ha habido, pero no podían salir adelante. Y el trabajo de estas renovadas escuelas está empezando a dar sus frutos. Jóvenes jugadores húngaros empiezan a poblar ligas extranjeras. Destaca entre ellos el gran ídolo de la afición del PSV Eindhoven, Balázs Dzsudzsák, que está haciendo un inicio de campaña espectacular con sus arrancadas por banda izquierda y sus cañonazos a balón parado con su zurda prodigiosa. En la Premier disfrutan del capitán Zoltán Gera, y en la liga española de Krisztián Vadócz . Y lo mejor es que por detrás vienen más talentos que ya han probado las mieles de la selección absoluta, como Ádám Szalai, al que fichó el Real Madrid el año pasado o Pétér Gulácsi, Krisztián Németh y Krisztián Adorjan -este último con sólo 16 años- que están a la espera de dar el salto al primer equipo del Liverpool. Esta magnífica generación de jugadores dará mucho que hablar. Aunque finalmente no se clasifiquen para este año, seguro que los veremos en los próximos Mundiales y Eurocopas. Puskás, Kocsis y compañía pueden tener sucesores casi 60 años después.

O futebol quase sempre é tratado como “somente para adultos”, com agressividade, fanatismo e agressões verbais para ofender as partes. Se esquece que é um esporte como outro qualquer, saudável e que o público infantil também quer, e merece, seu espaço nas arquibancadas, longe da violência, para estar junto ao clube.

Assim como faz o São Paulo FC com o programa Batismo Tricolor, o PSV Eindhoven da Holanda também viu um marketing agregador no ato de convidar pais torcedores do time para trazerem seus pequeninos ao estádio e conquistar o torcedor literalmente desde o berço.

Nỗ lực của chân sút 29 tuổi nhằm tìm lại phong độ ở MU cùng sự ủng hộ của dư luận vẫn không đủ làm HLV trưởng Fabio Capello thay đổi ý định, tạo điều kiện cho Owen trở lại đội tuyển quốc gia.

Trong danh sách 23 tuyển thủ được triệu tập chuẩn bị cho trận giao hữu với Hà Lan thứ tư tuần tới (ngày 12/8), Owen không có tên. Tương tự là Peter Crouch, chân sút vừa chuyển từ Portsmouth về Tottenham. Thay vào đó, Capello tiếp tục đặt niềm tin vào hai gương mặt quen thuộc là Heskey và Rooney, đồng thời dành cơ hội cho Defoe và Carlton Cole ở hai vị trí dự bị cho hàng công.

Đây là quyết định có phần gây bất ngờ của Capello. Không tính Rooney và Heskey – bộ đôi gần như chắc chắn có tên trong đội hình xuất phát, Owen không hề kém cạnh, thậm chí còn có phong độ tốt hơn hai cái tên còn lại trong đợt tập trung này là Defoe và Carton Cole. Tiền đạo mới gia nhập MU hồi đầu tháng 7 gần như đã lấy lại thể lực tốt nhất, anh cũng cho thấy bản năng săn bàn không dễ mai một khi ghi đến 4 bàn trong loạt trận giao hữu tập huấn hè vừa qua.

Nhưng Capello cũng có lý khi tiếp tục gạt Owen khỏi danh sách lên tuyển. Hôm thứ tư tuần trước, ông đã đến Old Trafford dự khán trận giao hữu MU – Valencia để quan sát Owen và chứng kiến chân sút 29 tuổi phung phí đến bốn cơ hội ăn bàn, trong đó có hai pha đối mặt thủ môn Valencia. Đây có lẽ là cơ sở để Capello chưa vội gọi trở lại chân sút mà ông từng bỏ rơi từ trận giao hữu thua Pháp 0-1 ở Saint Denis cách đây gần 18 tháng.

Ngoài Owen, danh sách tuyển Anh lần này còn có một sự vắng mặt đáng chú ý là David James. Thủ thành của Portsmouth luôn là sự lựa chọn số một cho vị trí gác cầu môn dưới thời Capello và được kỳ vọng sẽ trở lại tuyển Anh sau khi vắng mặt ở hai trận vòng loại World Cup với Kazakhstan và Andorra để phẫu thuật vai. Tuy nhiên, HLV trưởng người Italy đã bỏ qua anh để trao cơ hội cho Ben Foster, thủ môn đang tiến bộ ở MU, cùng hai cái tên cũ là Green và Robinson.

Trận giao hữu giữa tuyển Anh và Hà Lan sẽ diễn ra trên sân Amsterdam Arena ngày thứ tư tuần tới.

Ya hemos hablado de como afrontan los equipos Champions (por cierto, qué mala suerte la del Twente anoche!) la nueva temporada de la Eredivisie. Sin embargo, queda por analizar qué harán los grandes para recuperar la hegemonía perdida a manos de equipos con menos historia. Sin las preocupaciones derivadas de intentar progresar en la máxima competición continental (¿para qué engañarnos? La Europa League es un premio menor, y salvo que se llegue a las rondas finales el interés para un grande es mínimo), Ajax, PSV y Feyenoord deberían centrarse en alcanzar un título del que son practicamente los únicos poseedores. Y como he dicho antes, entrar en la Europa League no es el objetivo.

Parte II: La lucha de los grandes

• Ajax Amsterdam

Hace muchos años que escuchar Ajax no inspira miedo. En su día, cualquier equipo europeo temería a los nuevos productos de su cantera por su atrevimiento y gusto por el buen fútbol, pero esos días pasaron. El equipo holandés por antonomasia está pasando por una etapa de transición de la que le está costando mucho tiempo recuperarse, pero parece que esta puede ser la vencida. Lo que está claro es que cinco temporadas sin alzarse con el título son demasiadas. Ésto no ocurría desde principios de los 60. Entonces, un chaval llamado Johan Cruyff fue capaz de llevar al Ajax a conseguir 6 títulos en 8 años, antes de desembarcar en el FC Barcelona.

Hoy en día, el único que puede simular la hazaña de El Flaco (salvando las distancias, claro) parece ser Luís Suárez. El uruguayo se ha convertido en el verdadero estandarte de este equipo, y con sólo 22 años y dos temporadas en el club, ya es el capitán. Media Europa ya mira con el rabillo del ojo a este jugador, destinado a ser el que obre el milagro de devolver a la celeste a la posición que antaño ocupó en el fútbol mundial, empezando por clasificarla para el Mundial 2010. Al igual que Cruyff, es un delantero hábil con el balón y con un talento enorme. Pero no está sólo en su empresa.

El otro jugador llamado a marcar diferencias en este equipo es Darío Cvitanich, que llegó en diciembre con la intención de hacer olvidar a Huntelaar. Y el joven croata-argentino lo logró con creces. Anotó 9 goles en los 16 partidos que jugó en los 5 meses que estuvo en Holanda, y amenaza con progresar enormemente. El otro joven talento en la delantera es Miralem Sulejmani -el jugador más caro de la historia entre dos equipos de la Eredivisie-, joven serbio que puede actuar como extremo y que dio buenas sensaciones en su primer año en Amsterdam, a pesar de las lesiones. También se ha reforzado el mediocampo -la línea más débil del equipo- con la llegada de Demy de Zeeuw, pilar importante del AZ que campeonó la pasada campaña. Todo ello bajo la batuta de Martin Jol, ex-seleccionador neerlandés y proveniente del Hamburgo, y que sustituye a Marco van Basten, despedido al no lograr meter al equipo en Champions.

• PSV Eindhoven

Si hay algo que realmente atrae del PSV esta temporada es seguir las evoluciones de una delantera que tiene una pinta deliciosa. El equipo de la Phillips, que también estrena técnico repatriado de la Bundesliga, Fred Rutten, presenta un ataque temible con una 4-3-3 que no deja lugar a dudas: van a utilizar esa baza para luchar de nuevo por el título.

Empecemos por la línea de 3 en mediocampo. La referencia en esta línea es Ibrahim Afellay, joven pero experimentado canterano de corte ofensivo (¿cómo no?). A sus 23 años ya ha hecho algunas apariciones en la Oranje, durante la época -maravillosa época- de van Basten, aunque no cuente demasiado para  Bert van Marwijk. Le secundan en las bandas Orlando Engelaar y el capitán Timmy Simmons.

Pero sin duda, es en la delantera dónde se concentra el mayor talento de este equipo. Y casi todo proviene de las botas de Ola Toivonen (foto). El sueco sigue la estela de Zlatan Ibrahimovic, que triunfó en Holanda antes de dar el salto a una liga mayor. Y no sólo se parecen en la trayectoria, sino también en su estilo de juego. Toivonen es un delantero alto y fuerte, pero con una técnica impropia de un hombre de sus condiciones físicas. Fue la clave, junto a Marcus Berg, del éxito de la selección sueca sub-21 que a punto estuvo de colarse en la final del Europeo de este año y practicó el mejor fútbol del campeonato (aunque tampoco había que hacer maravillas para llevarse ese mérito, el Europeo fue muy flojo). Llegó al PSV en diciembre y en pocas semanas ya había sentado en el banquillo a los titulares  y veteranos Lazovic y Koevermans. Quizás, al igual que Ibra en sus primeros años, su punto débil es el gol pero parece que este año viene dispuesto a explotar: ha marcado dos goles (el segundo de ellos espectacular) de cabeza en el primer partido de la temporada, aunque no sirviese para más que para empatar a 3 en casa ante el recién ascendido VVV-Venlo.

Flanqueando al tanque sueco se encuentran otros dos jóvenes talentos. Por la derecha, Nordin Amrabat, holandés de ascendencia marroquí (al igual que Afellay) de 22 años y que ya despuntó la temporada pasada. Por la izquierda,  Balázs Dzsudzsák, uno de los muchos jóvenes que intentan volver a poner a Hungría en el mapa futbolístico mundial. Los herederos de Puskas tienen en su mano volver a una gran competición 24 años después. No será fácil con Portugal y Suecia pisándoles los talones en el grupo de clasificación.

• Feyenoord

La desastrosa temporada pasada del Feyenoord ha provocado tímida renovación en el vestuario, pero en ningún caso parece suficiente para luchar por el título. La plantilla sigue envejeciendo con jugadores veteranos (Makaay, Tomasson, van Bronckhorst, Landzaat) y apenas llegan jóvenes talentos. Y los que llegan no tienen oportunidades.

No voy a descubrir a nadie a los jugadores que he mencionado. Quizás cabe destacar que Makaay no ha perdido su olfato goleador (16 goles la pasada campaña). Es una pena que no triunfase en el Bayern de Munich, porque el Makaay que nos deslumbró en Coruña es uno de los mejores delanteros que he visto. Pero vamos a lo nuevo.

Siguiendo con el Dépor, nos encontramos a un jugador que sonó mucho para los gallegos: Jonathan de Guzman, hermano de Julian de Guzman, que recientemente ha dejado A Coruña. De hecho se llegó a decir que la única razón por la que Julian había llegado al Deportivo era que más tarde se trajese a su hermano con él. Porque Jonathan no tiene nada que ver con Julian, es un jugador de un muy alto nivel, y ya es habitual en la selección sub-21 de Holanda. Juega como medio ofensivo o extremo y es un jugador con mucho gol. Sin embargo, no fue titular en el debut con victoria ante el NEC Nijmegen (club del que procede el nuevo entrenador Mario Been) el domingo, siendo ocupada su posición (de medio ofensivo!!!!) por Jon Dahl Tomasson, lo cuál deja a las claras cuál va a ser la filosofía de Been.

Caben destacar dos jugadores más: el medio Leroy Fer, de 19 años, y que ya juega en la sub-21 holandesa; y Dani Fernández, uno de los incontables productos de La Mas, desconocido para el gran público español y que recala en el Feyenoord tras jugar en el Metalurg Donetsk ucraniano y en el NEC, cedido, la pasada campaña.

Manchester United star Park Ji-Sung has been omitted from the latest South Korea squad, allowing him extra time to prepare for the opening weekend of the Premier League season.

South Korea take on Paraguay in Seoul in a friendly on August 12 but coach Huh Jung-Moo has decided not to call-up the former PSV Eindhoven man.

Having already returned to pre-season training late following his World Cup commitments, Park may well have missed United’s opening two fixtures against Birmingham City and Burnley had he travelled with the rest of his national squad.

With South Korea’s place in next year’s World Cup in South Africa already assured, Huh has recognised the importance of Park remaining in Manchester next week.

“There is a full list of fixtures and [Manchester United] have made new signings so the start of the season is very important for Park,” the South Korea coach told the Press Association.

United have only recently returned home following their participation in the Audi Cup, where they lost out to Bayern Munich on penalties in the final.

The Red Devils take on Valencia in a friendly at Old Trafford on Wednesday before meeting Chelsea in the Community Shield at Wembley on Sunday.

“Bobby Robson became the heart that English football wore on its sleeve.” The words are a touching epitaph from the beginning of David Lacey’s tribute to Sir Bobby Robson in this morning’s Guardian, after the footballing great passed away yesterday. But they only do him partial justice. Best known in England for successful spells as a player then manager at Fulham, West Bromich Albion, Ipswitch Town and Newcastle – and for his eight years at the helm of the English national team – his feats overseas often go undocumented, or at best overlooked.

Robson is arguably England’s most successful ever manager abroad. Two stints at PSV Eindhoven, four years in Portugal with Sporting Lisbon and FC Porto and his highest profile position in club management at Barcelona are more than enough for most glittering careers – let alone crammed in between a World Cup semi-final in 1990 and a return to the club he supported as a boy in 1999.

Perhaps the best mark of his success during those nine years (four national titles, three domestic cups and the European Cup Winners’ Cup aside) are the number of careers Robson helped launch in that time. He bought and then brought the best out of Ronaldo at Barcelona, inspiring the Brazilian to score 47 goals in 49 games and to declare the Englishman “one of the greatest [trainers] in the world“. He worked with Luís Figo in Portugal and in Spain, tamed the famously tempestuous Romário in Holland and brought calm to the twilight of Hristo Stoichkov’s career.

Yet far greater than all of these achievements, he helped three of modern football’s leading figures prepare for life in the game’s back rooms. First, Frank Arnesen, one of the key players in Roman Abramovich’s Chelsea revolution, started his post-playing days as Robson’s assistant at Eindhoven before becoming the clubs general manager. His next big find was a young Portuguese translator who become assistant manager at Porto and then Barcelona under Robson – José Mourinho. Finally, Robson can lay some claim to being one of the first of football’s impresarios to identify Josep Guardiola’s talent for motivating and lifting his team. Between those three, Robson’s mentees have won two Champions League titles, six league crowns across Spain, England, Portugal and Italy, and countless cups in all four countries.

All of these great men have been quick to pay tribute to the unique Robson, who may have been the greatest of them all.

The football world is in mourning today at the death of Sir Bobby Robson.

I wouldn’t normally do this kind of thing – after all, I left the Michael Jackson subject well alone. But the thing with Sir Bobby is that the man was universally liked.

I wont go into too much detail. You’ll read all sorts of articles about him and you’ll already know a lot about his wonderful career. You’ll read and/or know all about the fact that he was a very good player at Fulham and the Baggies, and was a superb manager with great success at Ipswich, PSV, Barcelona etc and most famously for a lot of people, England.

You’ll also know that he was able to muster up the strength to attend the game in his honour just a few days before he died. I’m glad he did, as it will have been a wonderful last memory for him. I take no shame in admitting I had tears in my eyes as I saw him being wheeled onto the pitch. Cancer is the most vile and evil presence on this planet.

But I don’t want to think about that; what I want to think about is what a lovely and talented man that he was, and just to say that he will forever be missed, loved and respected. A man that touched the lives of many people not just in the North East, not just in England but all over the world. A man that was not only an absolute legend in his profession but was also a much-loved man that I never – never – have heard anyone say anything bad about. He was a special man and the world would be a better place with more people like him in it.

La jornada de la Liga europea se empezó el martes con un partido y ayer se completó la ida de los partidos con pocos resultados que resaltar:

Martes 28:

Bnei Yehuda – Paços Ferreira 1 – 0

Partido igualado en el cual los locales intensificaron los ataques sobre el marco contrario después del descanso y su recompensa fue el gol de Atar en el minuto 55′.

Jueves 30:

Athletic Club Bilbao – Young Boys 0 – 1

El equipo suizo se llevó un triunfo mínimo pero merecido, ya que impuso su mayor tono físico, – ya han empezado la Liga-, y gracias a un gol de Doumbia en el 23′ se impusieron, en la segunda parte Llorente falló un penalti que podría haber sido decisivo. Además debutó el joven Muniain de 16 años.

Maccabi Nentaya – Galatasaray 1 – 4

El Galatasaray goleó fuera de su estadio y así puede evitar algún que otro susto. Empezaron marcando los locales mediante Yampolsky en el 25′, en el 30′ empató Balta, y ya en la segunda mitad fue cuando metieron una marcha más i redondearon el marcador gracias a los goles de Kewell en el 47′, Sarioglu en el 53′ y de Baros en el 73′.

FK Vetra – Fulham 0 – 3

Los ingleses fueron un muro infranqueable para los locales, que dominaron territorialmente en la primera parte, dónde los londinenses se dedicaban a esperar alguna contra hasta que en el último minuto de la primera parte Zamora metió el primero. En la segunda parte, Murphy de penalti en el 57′ y Ki-Hyeon en el 85′ redondearon el marcador.

Metalurg Donetsk – NK Ljubljana 2 – 0

El Metalurg consiguió una victoria más fácil de lo esperada gracias a los goles de Godin en el 20′ y de Sergio en el 50′ de penalti.

Valerenga – PAOK Salonica 1 – 2

El PAOK hizo valer su mayor empuje para derrotar a los noruegos gracias a los tantos de Lino n el 31′ y Muslimovic en el 37′, recortó distancias Storbaek en el 42′.

Steaua Bucarest – Motherwell 3 – 0

La eficacia local fue demasiado para el equipo escocés, que no supo como contrarrestarla, además el primer tanto fue gol en propia portería de Craigan en el 31′ en el 45′, Nicolita metió el segundo y Satncu en el 60′ redondeó la victoria.

Polonia Varsovia – NAC Breda 0 – 1

El NAC sudó para ganarle a los locales, que no se lo pusieron fácil, pero que tras el gol de Kwakman en el 40′ se vinieron abajo, para acabar de torcerlo todo en el 43′ se fue expulsado el local Mynar.

Randers FC – Hamburgo SV

El Hamburgo se divirtió goleando y gustándose a sí mismo. A los 11′ Paolo guerrero inauguró el marcador, en el 23′ Boateng aumentó la distancia. Ya en la segunda mitad Petric hizo el tercero en el 53′ y Trochowsky en el 80′ redondeó la goleada desde el punto de penalti.

AS Roma – AA Gent 3 – 1

Los locales sufrieron mucho para derrotar a los belgas que se avanzaron mediante Leye en el 23′ y la distancia se mantuvo hasta el minuto 56′ en que Mexes igualó el marcador. Totti en el 73′ de penalti dio la vuelta al marcador y Vucinic en el 85′ redondeó el partido. En el 85′ fue expulsado Thompson para los visitantes.

FK Sevojno – LOSC Lille 0 – 2

El Lille tuvo suficiente con suficiente con dos chispazos de dos de sus estrellas como son Vittek en el 34′ y Hazard en el 39′ para ganar el partido. En el 90′ Plestan fue expulsado por el bando visitante.

Fenerbache – Honved 5 – 1

Gran partido de los locales ante su afición para redimirse del horrible año pasado. Roberto Carlos en el 13′ inauguró el marcador, después llegó el hat trick de Güiza en los minutos 30′, 40′ y 61′, el último gol local fue obra de Alex en el minuto 69′. El gol del honor visitante fue marcado por Zsolnai en el 78′.

Victoria trabajada y sufrida la que se llevó el PSV que logró batir al meta visitante gracias a un gol de Marcellis en el minuto 90′ .

Estos últimos días podemos ver por La Sexta el torneo veraniego más importante, la Peace Cup. En esta edición podemos ver equipos tan importantes como Real Madrid, Juventus de Turín, Aston Villa o Sevilla, entre otros. Pero este torneo ha ido creciendo con el paso de los años. Esta es la cuarta edición de la Peace Cup. Las tres anteriores se disputaron en Corea del Sur, pero el torneo tiene un marcado toque europeo. En todas la ediciones anteriores el ganador fue un club europeo. Echemos la vista al pasado y vayamonos al año 2003.

Corea del Sur 2003

La primera edición de la Peace Cup se realizó en cuatro ciudades de Corea del Sur. Los ocho equipos que jugaron se dividieron en dos grupos. Pasaban a las semifinales los dos primeros de cada grupo. Los dos equipos más importantes eran el Olympique de Lyon y el PSV Eindhoven. Ambos clubes llegaron a la final. Pero la revelación del torneo fue el Seongham Ilhwa Chunma. Los coreanos quedaron segundos de grupo (por detrás del Lyon) y pasaron a la semifinal. Cayeron el Besiktas y el Kaizer Chiefs. En el otro grupo quedó líder el PSV seguido del 1860 Munich. Elimainados de ese grupo quedaron LA Galaxy y el Nacional de Montevideo. Ya en la final, PSV Y Olympique se vieron las caras. Un penalti transform ado por Van Bommel fue decisivo para que el PSV fuera el campeçón. El trofeo se fue a Holanda junto con los 2 millones de dólares.

Corea 2005

Dos ñoas más tarde, Olympique de Lyon y PSV Eindhoven se volvían a enfrentar en Corea. Esta vez el sorteo decidió que se encontraran en la fasse de grupos. Otra vez jugaban ocho equipos divididos en dos grupos. en el grupo del Olympique y PSV se encontraban también el Oce Caldas colombiano y el Seongnam. En el otro grupo se enfrentaban Tottenham Hotspur, Boca Juniors, Mamelodi Sundowns sudafricano y Real Sociedad. A la final accedieron Tottenham y Olympique, por segundo año consecutivo. El equipo francés saboreo otra vez la derrota. Dos goles de Robbie King tumbaron a los galos. El partido terminó 3-1 a favor de los ingleses.

Corea del Sur 2007

En la última edición jugada hasta el momento, el Lyon partía como principal favortio para la victoria. En su grupo, el B, se enfrentaba al Reading inglés, al River Plate y al Shimizu S-Pulse. Los galos pasaron seguidos de River Plate. En el grupo A se veían las caras Bolton Wanderers, Chivas de Guadalajara, Seongnam y Racing de Santander. Los santanderinos fue la gran decepción con sólo un punto de nueve posibles. Pasó el Bolton seguido del Chivas. La final la jugaron el Bolton y el Lyon (otra vez). Los 56.000 espectadores tuvieon que esperar hasta el minuto 86 para ver un gol. A la tercera fue la vencida, el gol de Kallström dio al Lyon el ansiado trofeo que se les negó los dos años antes.

Este años los principales favoritos son el Real Madrid y la Juventus. Pero cualquiera de los otros dos semifinalistas pueden dar la sorpresa y proclamarse como campeón de la cuarta edición de la Peace Cup. Lo veremos el 2 de agosto en el Estadio de la Cartuja, en Sevilla.

As another sad reflection of the Aquarian Age we are entering, a former international with 115 caps to his merit is once again put in a bad light and it’s not at all hard to detect the stabbings behind the curtain. To cut the story short, Gheorghe Popescu was a blessing for Romanian football, which achieved its heighest with the centre-back in the line-ups, and became a threat to the dubious establishment at the top of the national game once retired.

Popescu was just put forward as another high-profile example of informer to Securitate, the infamous secret police of Ceausescu’s regime, with all the hype and sensationalism that such an announcement brings. If it’s to ask any Romanian in the street, the folklore goes that one in three collaborated in one way or another with the oppresive regime. That’s what you’ll be told. Was Gica Popescu one of the “one in three”? It’s questionable, unproven and there is a realistic possibility, as many people sense, for all the hype to be just a false flag, a script writen by his enemies. It seems so, at least, just remembering the too many cases when opponents of beneficiaries of the previous regime and what was to follow were subjected to bad publicity and stinking lies. Popescu, the footballer, knows too well about the best way of defending, which is to attack, and it looks like his opponents ar employing exactly the same tactics…  

Some ruined others people’s lives. Others were just scared, pitiful informers. But extremely few out of the many who did lasting damage to their nation and its citizens have suffered the repercussions of their antics. In this context, to bring from the dead a very questionable dark but, if so, totally insignificant side of one of the most proeminent Romanian footballers ever, is not only another attack on his present reputation and credit with the public but a retroactive stain on an untarnished career, full of success, during which the well-travelled defender may have had a very few unharmful slips to the small benefit of his recruiters. Slips which, if this is the real truth, happened when the young man was in his very early 20es and when all that he wanted is to play football, to fly high in his career… His wrist was easy to be twisted. 

Soon after the collapse of Ceausescu’s regime, a small but well connected group with the inside knowledge of the Romanian game raised to power at the top of FRF, the Romanian Football Federation, with its later ramification in LPF, the Professional League, an umbrella to the first division, and banked in all possible ways thanks to the significant inroads of the national side, blessed with a couple of fine generations of talented players. Among them, “Gica” Popescu, a leader at the provincial club Universitatea Craiova in the late 80es, in a new wave of fine footballers emerged immediately after the club’s route to an away-goal rule defeat to Benfica in the UEFA Cup semifinals.

From Craiova, a magnet of footballing talent from the region of Oltenia, where Popescu was born in october ‘67, the tall defender ended more or less against his will and to the dismay of his followers at Steaua Bucharest, for the second part of the penultimate full season of football in Ceausescu’s times. Gheorghe played only 13 games for the Army team with connections to Ceausescu’s family and returned to his beloved Universitatea, from where, once Coppa del Mondo Italia Novanta ended, he started his European tour, first with four years in Eindhoven, then with a season at White Hart Lane, continued with the triumphs in both Cup Winners Cups and UEFA Cup while playing and even captaining Barcelona and Galatasaray respectively.

As the European football followers will remember the decisive penalty with which Popescu won UEFA Cup for the Istanbul based club, against Wenger’s Arsenal, in the 2000 final, as well the Romanian folk will cherish forever his appearances at three World Cup finals and two European Championships, an accollade which deservedly placed him 13 years in a row in the top four of the Romanian Player of the Year award, winning it six times. I’ll take this “Gica” anytime, as a great and passionate sportsman and footballer… That he is in love with football and fully appreciates its power to change lifes, Popescu proved by opening his own Football Academy, a finely run school in his native Calafat, a town in the county with the capital in Craiova. This is his legacy, and not what some backstabbers and their media lackeys are trying to throw like bombshells into the public domain.

Raising to such proeminence through talent and very hard work, Popescu became though a threat to the establishment once his career was over and, obvious for all, his ambitions to continue on the path of doing good for the game and country would have put him on a collision course with forces not so willing to give up on power, despite their reign on the game since early 90es. Firstly, Popescu was the only previously untarnished and remarkable figure to come out scathered of one of the too many scandals which are permanently engulfing the badly run Romanian football, in that case involving transfers, on which market the former player entered as a registered agent. A scapegoat in a world of lurking sharks.

And now this. An informer. Really!?! There are so many countless nasty informers or even more, servants of the former regime, who enjoy their lavish lifestyles and crazy pensions without the scrutiny of the once surveilled. But then there is one “Gica” Popescu, former excellent footballer and brother-in-law of Gheorghe “Maradona of Carpathians” Hagi, who can become the catalyst of the so much needed change for good. Now here we are. There are elections to be won, there are warm seats to be kept, there are incredible cases of relentless corruption undermining the game to be covered, so the best way to defend the establishment is to attack the opponents.

Popescu is clean and has the interests of game at heart, in a clear antithesis to the machinations of the clique. He was made to look unclean, to the benefit of the rulers who continued the policy which suffocated the Romanian game in Ceausescu’s years.

Why was his supposed collaboration with Securitate brought to light right now? Why about him and not about countless others? Actually, any other decent Romanian will only say that is interested in the slightest in this unsavoury detail about one of their heroes. This is not dirty laundry but just – if proven – a minuscule stain instigated decades ago by others’ persuasive powers. So why?

The answer is simple… To the benefit of the same, plus to defect attention from other lugrubious happenings in the Romanian society and for the mass-media to have another scalp and scandal to turn on all its sides. And the damage to be complete, the story spilled in the European media as well, with all the typical clichees and subjective insights from a long distance into a game with much too much to uncover but ruled in such a manner to endlessly perpetuate the spin of the dirty laundry.

If it’s to talk about Gica, let’s start by visiting his Football Academy in Calafat. That’s his legacy for the game, out of his hard earned money. I wonder where is to be seen the legacy of almost 20 years of uninterrupted ruling at FRF and where are the money which came into the coffers due to the same great dilligence and profound sweat of likes as Gica Popescu? Actually these are great questions to be raised and brought forward but it’s too big the undertaking while the easy-to-get sensationalist stories are plenty, isn’t it!? Poor “Gica”, what have you done to all us ramblers?

Or may be is just human nature. The selfishness, the ego, the bitter jealousy of some corrupt birocrats and their little lives, against a role model who by well passing a century of caps for his country outgrew from a football icon for many to a potential saviour Mesia. So it’s easy to detect from where popped up all these unnecessary first page titles.

And to draw a parallel, it’s neither a surprise or a coincidence that in the same july of 2009 the former great head coach of the Romanian gymnastics team, Octavian Bellu, threw the towel from his meaningless role as a Secretary of Department of Sport, disgusted with the inertia and involvement of politics in an arena assumingly governed by fair-play. Another fine example of how Romanian politics is nefarously controlling from behind all aspects of the society, interfering with its dirty hands, suffocating and bringing into disrepute the sport arena and its national heroes. At least “Gica” is in good company, in a strong line of good men who were made to look bad.

I’m not defetist but the claws are impossible to be crushed. And for the simple mind or uninformed folk, “Gica” will be from this july 2009 ongoing not only the great footballer that he really was but an informant as well, just because someone interested decided to feed the propaganda machine with another target. He is just another victim of the smear campaign… A high profile victim. And “the campaigners” seem as powerful as 20 years ago. Has anything changed? Is it the summer of ‘89 or 2009? By the looks of it, we are moving fast-forward to a dark past, suffocated by walls which fell only in our imagination.

Gica’s firm response is to be expected.

I am saddened today to hear of the death of Sir Bobby Robson, former manager of the England Football team as well as various high profile clubs across Europe. He first came properly into my radar when I was twelve and he was managing the then unfashionable Ipswich Town. My cousin Kim supported Ipswich and the 1978 F.A Cup final they won against Arsenal was the second Wembley game I can remember watching live on television (the first being the previous year’s final in which my team, Liverpool, lost to Manchester United).

The first half of the 1978 was a cagey affair, as I recall it, with more action coming from shots of Bobby Robson twitching characteristically in the dugout than from the pitch. At half time Kim and I went for a quick kick-about in the field behind our Nan’s garden, to relieve the tension. Second half, out of the blue, Roger Osbourne scored for Ipswich Town and the Tractor Boys held on to win the cup.

Under Bobby they went on to be League runner’s up twice and won the U.E.F.A Cup in 1981. A year later England came calling and Bobby Robson took up what seemed at the time to be the greatest challenge of his career. His eight years in charge of the national team are largely remembered for ‘what-if’s’. What-if Diego Maradona’s ‘hand of God’ goal had been disallowed in the 1986 World Cup Quarter-final? What-if West Germany hadn’t won the penalty shoot-out and prevented us from reaching the 1990 World Cup final? Forget our missed penalties, what if Chris Waddle’s shot in extra time had not bounced back off the right hand post but had crept into the goal?

In the end, of course, what-if’s can never be turned into silverware, but Bobby Robson was clearly the best England manager since Sir Alf Ramsey. He was also one of the best club managers in the game too, proving himself at Porto, PSV Eindhoven and Barcelona before returning to England to manage Newcastle United. Here he was less successful but worshipped as a messiah by the Geordie fans. A real one, not a borrowed one like Kevin Keegan, but a genuine Durham born lad.

Sir Bobby will also be remembered for his infectious enthusiasm which was visible to anyone who saw that he really did ‘kick every ball’ from the dugout.
