Een van de bekendste elektronische ‘tunes’ uit de vroege jaren van de elektronische muziek is Psyché Rock.

Iedereen kent het tegenwoordig van de openingsgeneriek van Futurama. Het is misschien het bekendste electronische nummer uit die zestiger jaren.
Pierre Henry maakte het tesamen met de britse rockband Spooky Tooth. Het werd gebruikt door Maurice Bejart in één van zijn balletten. Met name: “Messe pour le temps présent,”

Het werd ook een hit in vele disco’s, danszalen en op fuiven.

Het was echter maar een zijsprongetje van Pierre Henry, die doorgaans andere muziek maakte.

OK just checked out some things about Musique Concrete, something that was raised in our lecture this week. Here’s a link. I think that this level of experimentation and discovery is amazing for it’s day. No Cubase or Pro Tools to deconstruct sounds with, just some clever engineering a bit of maths and some real imagination. It has a number of films on You Tube featuring some contemporary homages to the elders, you can check one out here.

The technique was developed about 1948 by the French composer Pierre Schaeffer and his associates at the Studio d’Essai (“Experimental Studio”) of the French radio system (Encyclopedia Britannica). He would gather an assortment of natural sounds including voices and instruments and arrange these sounds varying their pitch and tone to create some weird and wonderful results that varied in intensity and feel.

This was the first time that electronic aids were used to extend the repertoire  of the composer yet was still frowned upon by more traditionally educated musicians. It is a controversial subject, some people just hear noise, uncomfortable noisy non tempo-ed noise. Others can appreciate the technique, the style and mood of which is meant to be felt.

Not all traditionally trained composers felt the same way. Three years later in 1951 Schaeffer joined forces with Pierre Henry, who has been worshiped alongside Schaffer as being the pioneers of Musique Concrete. There’s an interesting article here bought the fact that the contemporary theme-song to the TV show ‘Futurama’ was inspired by Henry’s 1967 composition called ‘Psyche Rock’.

I’m really liking this idea of layering up sounds to create something new. I think I would like to use both .WAV files as well as MIDI instruments and create a mix of old and new. It’s not long until the deadline (27/10/09) so I’d better get cracking as I intend for my piece to closer mimic the movements of the film.Every motion should have a sound. I will use Ableton Live as it is a piece of software I have never used before. I have used things like Reason and Cubase quite a lot so using something new should encourage that feeling of experimentation as I learn how to use Ableton. Hopefully this will show in my final piece. I intend to use a range of frequencies to depict certain movements as well as using spatial awareness to trick the listeners psycho-acoustic awareness. There’s a brief article here about Psychoacoustics, something that I find fascinating. Another thing I am interested in is effects such as Convolution Reverb, the method of taking an impulse response of an acoustic space and convoluting the resulting reverberation with an instrument to make the instrument sound like it is actually being played in the space. Check the video from the latest Flaming Lips album single “I Can Be A Frog” great album when given a chance … it’s quite experimental and a few tracks have a bit of distortion and psychedelia to them but all in all beautiful.

Ma grande surprise de 2008, c’est le chanteur Jésus “Sixto” Rodriguez. Je l’ai découvert au détour d’un article des Inrocks qui chroniquaient ce mystérieux artiste des 70’s, auteur d’un des plus beaux albums de folk psychédélique de l’ère hippie, Cold Facts. Comme le dit l’auteur du blog My Head is a Juke Box, on croit toujours avoir tout entendu des sixties mais c’est sans compter sur l’inconséquence de l’industrie du disque…le con qui a dit qu’il n’y avait pas de génies méconnus se l’est fourré bien profond…

Bref, Rodriguez a sorti deux albums splendides en 1970 et 1971, Cold Facts et Coming from reality, ou il revisitait le folk  à la lueur de bougies psychédéliques, avec des fulgurances prog-rock magnifiques. Son art du songwriting n’avait rien à envier à celui des Byrds, de Donovan, de Bolan ou du Bowie des débuts. Malheureusement, il passa totalement à coté du succès.

Je pense sans rien affirmer, qu’il a dû subir un certain ostracisme dû à ses origines latinos dans une Amérique encore très conservatrice. Il a sans doute aussi souffert d’une mauvaise réputation suite à sa superbe chanson “Sugarman” où il fit l’apologie de la drogue de façon beaucoup plus directe que ses collègues de l’époque. Étiquetée “musique de camés”, un peu de la même manière que Thiéfaine en France après la sortie de “La Fille du coupeur de joints”, il n’a peut être pas pu percer le marché grand public. Désormais cela ajoute une aura particulière aux chansons de ce “beautiful loser”, heureusement revenu en grâce par le biais du web.

Je conseille particulièrement “Cold Facts” à tous les fans de folk, du mouvement psyché et en général à tous les amateurs de musique des 60’s et 70’s !

Comment passer à côté du nouvel opus du prodigieux et très influent groupe de britpop OASIS ? Aujourd’hui ce nom sonne comme une référence, un truc passé mais toujours d’actualité, tellement présent dans notre vie que l’on ne s’en rend même plus compte. Heureusement le fuckin’ best band of the world ré-actualise son Rock arrogant, avant la descente ultime.  Les deux frères Gallagher, gentils papas et incontestables fans des Beatles s’arrachant constamment leur part de succès se sont entendus sur ce disque innovateur et hétérogène. Oui, si je sors la physique pour décrire la perfection suprême de cet opus contagieux, c’est que l’on est arrivés à un point culminant. Et si leur vieille pop rock furibonde n’était qu’un test dans toute leur carrière ? Et si ce n’est qu’aujourd’hui qu’Oasis se sent bien, dans son style semi-psyché rock? Au moins d’agresser Liam ou Noel, nous ne saurons jamais. Les chansons, toujours plus accrochantes, entre hommage à Lennon sous acide (I’m outta time) noyé dans une marre de choeurs confondus et chansons vigoureusement efficaces (Ain’t got nothin’). L’instrumental lourd s’impose dans l’accablant titre raté The nature of reality, vite rattrapé par le titre suivant (Soldier On), carrément barré et psychédélique, à travers ses voix lointaines assommées de reverb et sa rythmique régulière. Le meilleur titre, Falling down, malgré son a priori banal domine aisément l’album, à l’aide d’une mélodie docile qui imprègne rapidement les oreilles.

En somme un excellent album, à ne rater sans aucun prétexte.

No es exactamente que futurama fuera transmiido en ese año pero el tema con el que inicia la serie en la actualidad esta basado en la canción “Psyche Rock” de Pierre Henry de 1967.

Es un dato interesante y aunque el tema actual no es exactamente igual se pueden notar claramente las influencias de Pierre. Ademas tanto el video y la canción son muy buenas, asi que disfrutenlo
