The Horrorpops
I may not like collecting people like Pokemon (see previous entry re: social networking sites) but I seem to be predisposed to collecting new addictions. Over the past few days, I have been listening to the Danish psychobilly band, The Horrorpops, constantly. Of course being a fan of inebriation & rockin’ music, the song “Crawl Straight Home” is my current favorite. Lead singer Patricia Day’s vocals are sexy & haunting and I think it’s amazing that she can play the upright bass while singing —I can barely lip synch and play dashboard drums at the same time! Artwiculate
I’m already admittedly addicted to Twitter and my recent discovery of the word game Artwiculate has done nothing but exacerbate this “affliction.” Playing Artwiculate has given me a chance to dust off the cobwebs that have accumulated in certain areas of my brain by forcing me to try my hand at crafting clever wordplay using the word of the day. The choices for word of the day have been on opposite ends of the spectrum in terms of difficulty, yesterday’s was pilgrim, which I found to be a terribly trite and obvious word choice, and today’s word is tintinnabulation which is most certainly much more challenging to use for generating interesting tweets that do not exceed 140 characters. Things are really picking up!

In other me news, the concert last night was awwwwsome! Cowboy hats and Slayer t-shirts, long beards and leather jackets. It was psychobilly at its finest.

And, although I love rock ‘n’ roll, I’m not really a rock writer – my attention span is too short to go into detail about anything at all – but here are some of the highlights:

The openers were called Those Poor Bastards. The band is a couple of dudes – a drummer and singer/guitar player. I had never heard them before but I liked em a lot. They did a great cover of Hank III’s Pills I Took and a creepy dude in a skeleton costume came out on stage and danced for a bit. He had a mask on, but I’m pretty sure it was Hank III himself.

Hank did most of his awesome repertoire of songs, including Smoke and Wine, Country Heroes, and Not Everybody Likes Us, and a few of the all-time favorite country classics – The Ride (Coe), a turbo-speed version of Cocaine Blues (Cash) and I’ll Never Get Out of This World Alive by Hank Senior (chills)! Everybody really went nuts during that one.

The last group, Assjack is another Hank III project, fronted by Gary Lindsay. They’re pretty much straight heavy metal. This was when of the moshing and crowd surfing really got out of hand and I stepped back away from the stage to enjoy it safely, haha. Not really – the pit was actually pretty tame.

They played at the Vogue, a venue I adore. (Hubby and I saw the Derek Trucks Band play there earlier this year.) There are tables and chairs if you want to sit, a balcony up above, and also a nice hardwood floor in front of the stage for the die-hards. And, they had my Bell’s Two Hearted! (Bottle though, not on tap.)

I love venues where you can actually see the performers. If I have to watch them on a jumbo-tron just to see what’s going on, I might as well be listening to them on the stereo at home.

Being just a few feet away from Hank III, the family resemblance was apparent:

I feel so lucky that I got to see Hank William’s grand-baby performing live! SO COOL. Okay, now that I’m getting all misty, I’ll move on.

Tonight I plan on punishing myself for my mid-week shenanigans by working out extra hard. Its chilly outside, but not windy. I’m thinking a good long run and 500 crunches should be the proper atonement.

Hm, maybe I need to rename the blog “the journal of a metalhead drinker with a running problem…”

The Dead Cats

a tribute to all the cool cats who are dead

Existing for only six weeks before their very first gig on Friday the 13th in January of 1994, the Deadcats have quietly come a long way. It all started when lead vocalist/stand-up bass player Mike “Mick Nitro” Dennis started jamming with Vancouver legend, Beef, during a break in a House of Commons (Nitro’s former band) practice. Playing Cramps covers, Beef informed Nitro that his playing was giving him a boner, so naturally they put a band together under the name of Beef’s old band. After rounding up fellow Vancouver scenesters Scooter (on washtub bass) and guitarist Gorehound, the Deadcats were reborn, and a gig was booked for that infamous date.

“The crowds in Vancouver loved it,” says Nitro. “They had never seen psychobilly before, and all these cute Betty Page type girls starting coming out to our shows because the music was very danceable. We knew we had stumbled onto a winning formula!” And how! On their blog site, most of the band’s linked friends are of the female persuasion.

The band’s name is not only derived from the one founded by Beef. It partially pays tribute to “all the cool cats who are…dead,” Nitro tells me via email.  He goes on to list names like John Belushi, Eddie Cochran, Charlie Feathers, Janis Joplin, Marilyn Monroe, Frank Sinatra, Gene Vincent and of course, Elvis. Just as fitting he states, “When we were formed we were kinda like ‘the Dead Kennedys meet the Stray Cats’.”

There have been plenty of personnel changes over the past twelve years leaving Nitro as the only founding member after Scooter departed recently. Taking on guitar duties these days are Chopper and Marcel while the band has undergone so many drummer changes, it could rival Spinal Tap. It hasn’t been as bad an experience though as Nitro explains, “We’ve had some really incredible drummers. Guys who played with D.O.A., SNFU, Ray Condo, Pointed Sticks, and Personality Crisis among others. Our latest guy, Snakebite Steve, used to play with bluesman David Gogo.”

Their latest release, Feline 500 provides fans with the music that they love so much despite all the changes.  “Actually I sang most of the songs before so the sound hasn’t changed too much,” says Nitro. With songs like “Frankenstein Shuffle”, “Jack The Ripper”, “Mummified Baby” and “Peggy Suicide”, it’s obvious these guys are having fun. Said record can be bought through their label’s web site (www.flyingsaucerrecords.com) but with a national distribution deal through Scratch and Fab, Feline 500 can be requested at any local record store.

Of course, the draw of the Deadcats is their live performance and they embark on a small Western tour in October, which Nitro seems very excited about as he remembers past shows. “The last two times we played in Calgary we had a bunch of girls come on stage and dance for a song or two. This time we’re bringing a cute young go-go dancer gal called Meow. I think some of the Kabuki Guns are also coming out to do a song.” He went on to recall a particularly “raucous and crazy” gig at Broken City some time ago and ponders the Calgary/Edmonton rivalry.  “For the Deadcats, Calgary still has a slight edge but Edmonton is getting damn close as far as fun Deadcats shows go. Calgary, we look for you to outdo Edmonton again!”

Scurtă istorie.

2007

Dupa inregistrarea primului demo, The Shadowbirds a primit numeroase invitatii la festivale internationale. Debutul ei prin aceste turnee a fost un success garantat, la scurt timp fiind chemata la 3 cluburi mari in Polonia.

Tot in acest an a aparut primul CDM (maxi-single) sub egida casei de discuri germane “Crazy Love Reocrds”. Acest material a continut 4 piese, iar criticile la adresa lui a fost positive. Ca de exemplu piesa “The Monster” a fost selectionata pentru o compilatie a revistei “ Psychomania Maganzine”

2008

In 2008 The Shadowbirds a fost supporting act pentru nume precum: Koffin Kats si Dead Elvis and His One Man Grave. La scurt timp a fost chemata la Viena ca opening act pentru trupa lui Lee Rocker, contrabasistul legendar al formatiei “Stray Cats”.

Peste o luna The Shadowbirds este invitata in Kiev la renumitul festival Ukrabilly Band, iar in mai in Germania la un alt festival cu  renume, Psychomania Rumble No.2.

Trupa se loveste de un moment greu. Tobarul Roland se imbolnaveste si trebuie sa paraseasca trio-ul. Asa apare in peisaj Furo care ii va lua locul definitv lui Roland.

Din respect pentru fostul tobar, vocalistul decide sa numeasca acest proiect: Ati Edge & The Shadowbirds (Ati Edge având şi proiectul solo, prima lui formaţie, Silvershine).

2009

In 2009 in martie, in noua formula, trupa porneste catre un turneu in Romania, cu o reactie uluitoare din partea publicului la Timisoara si Cluj (aici in premiera un concert de psychobilly).

Urmeaza un turneu de 2 saptamani in Elvetia, Franta, Spania si Austria.

In luna mai (a.c.) incep planurile pentru inregistrarea albumui de debut.

In luna iunie Ati Edge & The Shadowbirds s-a reintors in Romania, la festivalul “West Romanian Bike Week” (26-28 iunie) din Resita, la Raul Alb.

A mai participat in august si la Free Biker’s Week II (13-16 august 2009) – Nandru, in judetul Hunedoara

Cel mai important moment din acest an pentru aceasta trupa a fost tot in luna august cand a deschis pentru renumita trupa elvetiana The Peacocks (psychobilly/punk) in cadrul festivalului “AZFESZT” din Ungaria.

Intre timp la sfarsitul lunii iulie trupa a intrat in studio. In curand se va anunta si data exacta a lansarii albumului care contine 14 piese.

Pe 15 noiembrie trupa ATI EDGE AND THE SHADOWBIRDS vor concerta pe scena clubului Suburbia impreuna cu alte trei formatii locale de punk. Trupa se afla in turneu pentru promovarea uni nou album adresat fanilor genului de muzica psychobilly, rockabilly si garage rock and roll.

Pretul biletului va fi de 15 lei iar concertul va incepe de la ora 19.
