Abstract:

The article outlines the work of a ward in a high secure hospital Merseyside. The ward was opened to accommodate service users with cognitive difficultures who no longer required the high-dependency care provided in the Centre for Cognitive Rehabilitation and were ready to move to a medium or low dependency area in the hospital. The ward was part of a unit that uses a psychosocial model of care. Staff had attended a five-day course introducing them to cognitive rehabilitation therapy. The intention was to combine psychosocial interventions with cognitive rehabilitation therapy.

Kale I am pissed!

That shit ain’t cool. It’s my weekend, not yours. Stop acting like it’s any of your business and start minding your own business. Oh, here we go again. What do you mean what am I talking about? I had one of the shittiest weekends this year. See? See? You’re wondering what happened to me. Now go back and read from the start. You’ll know why I’m quarreling.

The one supposed to come after this one

There’s this place in Africa called Bugolobi. I passed by on Sunday and found god. No, that wasn’t a typo. He was all dressed in white and driving a Pajero. I asked around and they said it was some new cult. Did any of you see that shit? There was a huge following of about fifty dudes and dudesses all dressed in kanzus.

The holy one had about five bodyguards to protect him from the evil of this world, the poor messiah. I wasn’t there for the service but could sure have used the chance to ask him the gazillion questions running through my mind. Like: “Father, how come you have a Pajero and not something more out of this world, so to speak, like a Range Rover? Are you saying Pajeros are holier?”

Unholy cars...

And: “Oh great one, why did you choose Bugos for your second coming? Lugogo looks divine to me. It has the cricket oval that housed the original world cup and the Game store where we get to buy lots of church wine. And take it home on Saturday night. For church purposes.”

And: “Oh almighty, why is the Uganda Police protecting you? Are you sometimes afraid of the dark? Do you read the Bible?”

And: “Oh alpha, what’s the greater sin; getting high on Alvaro or saying something good about Walker G. Bush?”

And: “Oh oh, is it true angels are ranked from Seraphim to Cherubim to Beyonce?”

The one about fuckin’ cults

It’s stupid when you do something and don’t remember why you did it. Like if you slapped a random dude and the next second forgot why you did it or if you had sex with your girlfriend and can’t recall why exactly you did it. Okay, maybe you should ignore the second example.

Thing is I typed some stuff just before I left work yesterday. I open the doc this morning and lo and behold:

Unedited/Don’t laugh: “She’s the queen of hearts. The choices we make I think I just saw a tortoise. Game crappy card and…woah! Go go go who’s to blame? Lol I fell for the trap again. Dude! Shit! What the..who put it here? Hihihi they saw me”

This is not funny!

To make sense of it, I tried to put the pieces together so I started with “escipe”, then “ipecse”, then “seepic”….nothing made sense. Who in their right freakin’ mind writes this crap? Wait, did I just diss myself? You should learn to respect myself, Erique.

The one with the right title

I don’t know how to laugh in a chat room. Is it “hahaha”, “hehehe”, “hihihi” or do you just type “lol” and back off? This is a matter of life and death. We need to brainstorm and come up with a standard laugh. I once used the common “rotflmfao” and this is how it went:

Eh! This thing can talk! Hello?

EQ: rotflmfao

Chatner: ??

EQ: ??

Chatner: ??

EQ: What?

Chatner: What do you mean rotf…

EQ: I was laughing.

Chatner: ??

EQ: It stands for laughing

Chatner: Can’t you just type ‘laughing’ or haha? There’s even a laughter sign (read emoticon) in the corner.

EQ: *Logged out due to mysterious computer problem.

Rumspringa (pronounced Room-shpring-a) Definition: Running around.

The Amish are a group of people who want to be different from the world. They want to let their light shine through the life they live. They don’t actively convert others to their religion. To them, a simple life that forsakes all vanity speaks for itself. Cable TV, Xbox 360’s and other gaming systems, alcohol, smoking, and even electricity are considered to be distractions that will take value away from their lives. Amish folks do not question the traditions of the church. They are content to be satisfied with the way things have always been. “Idol hands are the Devil’s workshop” is a concept they use to keep themselves busy so as not to think of or do vain things.

Generally, when you see an Amish person they are driving a horse and buggy. The faster pace of the world with their fast cars and places they have to be as quick as possible is quite foreign. The slower pace of life allows them time to meditate on God and evaluate their ways in order to be what God wants them to be.

You have to commend them for being consistent. Generally, a religious person follows church culture on Sundays and lives in the world culture on the following Monday. At the very least, the Amish way is a consistent way to live your life. The Amish key verse is I John 2:15: Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.

Amish children are dealt with in an interesting way. Until 8th grade, most Amish children are in a one-room schoolhouse. They drop out after 8th grade and get jobs. Up until the age of 16, they have no contact with the outside world. During this time, the parents bring up the children the way they think they should live their lives, and try to instill in them the values of the Amish.

You may wonder how they have managed to stay the same throughout the years. Virtually no one questions the church or tries to change the way they do things. This is accomplished in part by a period in the Amish life called “rumspringa”. After Amish children reach the age of 16, they go out into the “English” world to experience what it is like. It’s during this time that they either choose to join the Amish church or leave it forever. This period could last anywhere from a few months to a few years. The decision is very hard for many. To leave the Amish church is to forget everything you have ever done: forget your family, church, work, friends, and your community.

This “dabbling” in the outside world is like playing with fire. The boys dress English and drive cars. The girls typically do not. If there isn’t a party around, then they make one. Within minutes, word spreads that a party is on and Amish adolescents from miles around, and even from other states, jump in their newly acquired cars to attend a party that could number in a few hundred to a thousand. These parties include alcohol, smoking, sex, rock music, gaming, and sometimes drugs like methamphetamines. Sometimes the parties are held in a parent’s backyard. The parent has knowledge of what goes on and does nothing to stop it, for the Amish adolescents must be free to make their own choices. However, if an Amish person were to die during the time of rumspringa, hell is their destination. An Amish preacher commented on this belief and quoted “Rejoice, O young man, in thy youth; and let thy heart cheer thee in the days of thy youth, and walk in the ways of thine heart, and in the sight of thine eyes: but know thou, that for all these things God will bring thee into judgment.”

And for all that they do, the Amish children know that the church will take them back unconditionally. And the Amish church reports that currently 90% of all rumspringa adolescents come back to the church, which is the highest percentage reported thus far. When they come back they are baptized into the church and make a promise to God to follow the rules of the church for life. The ones that leave the church, choose material things and the “English” way of life over their own families.

But is this a good practice for the Amish people? On the positive side, at least their young people are given a choice. You can’t say they are forced into their religion. However, age 16 is a time of great inner pubescent turmoil.

It does raise the question of how to keep your children in the same faith that you have as they get older.

Erik Erikson had no formal training in psychology, but was trained to be a psychoanalyst by Sigmund Freud. He stated that people pass though eight psychosocial stages in their lifetime. At each stage, there is a crisis to be resolved. The stage I am concerned with is Stage 5, which ranges from age 12 to 18. Erikson says that the question “Who am I” becomes important during this time. To answer it, adolescents increasingly turn away from parents and toward peer groups. Erikson believed that during adolescence the individual’s rapidly changing physiology, coupled with the pressures to make decisions about future education and career, creates the need to question and redefine the psychosocial identity established during the earlier stages. Teenagers experiment with various sexual, occupational, and educational roles as they try to find out who they are and who they can be. This new sense of self is a reassembly or an alignment due to the resolutions of the previous crisis and the new opportunities that are now afforded them. This will contribute to the final stage of development where the individual will look back over his or her life and accept the accomplishments, failures, and limitations that have occurred. Of course, some will be filled with regret at the way they have lived their lives.

So, how do we deal with our young ones if we want them to grow up right? In my experience as a Christian, almost everyone has fallen away from the faith at some point in time. But this “Crisis of Faith” is not limited to the young ages. I have a friend who recently went through a crisis of faith and she is around 29 years old. She began to question what truth is and did not accept the Bible answer. The problem is that by that time she was already settled in life, had a husband, and a job, and now all that is in jeopardy. There is too much collateral damage for a crisis of faith later on in life.

Why don’t people develop their faith personally at a young age? Well, many reasons pervade in the current day, but I believe there is a main reason: Erikson states that parents who are overly restrictive and harsh give their children a sense of powerlessness and incompetence, which can lead to shame and doubt in one’s abilities. If you aren’t given the chance to make a decision, chances are the decision is made for you. You roll through life following the beliefs that aren’t really your beliefs but you haven’t realized it yet. If you did, it would be the beginning of your crisis of faith.

Knowing that the crisis of faith is advantageous at a young age, how then as parents do we proceed? Usually, between the ages of 18 months to 3 years old is when a child starts to develop his own system of doing things. A child at this stage has the dual desire to hold on and to let go. Parents who allow their children to roam freely while at the same time provide an ever present guiding hand help the child to develop a sense of autonomy (self-governing). Now really, are they self governing at that point? No. But you can allow them chances to make their own decisions in certain situations. After all, we as parents know what our children can and cannot do. (At least, if we are looking for that kind of thing.) As the child grows older and reaches the teenage years, allow them to gradually increase in responsibility and freedom. As a parent, know that someday they will probably have a crisis of faith. And the Christianity that you want them so badly to hold on to… foster their minds to question it and be ready to answer those questions. Better it be you than someone else. Show them your faith is true, and teach them to recognize a lie. At least they will have the tools to deal with their crisis of faith properly.

People say I never write about serious stuff. Yes, I do. No, you don’t. I so do. You so don’t. I do!

People say I never write about serious stuff. Yes, I do. No, you don’t. I so do. You so don’t. I do! You don’t! See? Even my keyboard doesn’t agree. So today, I’m doing something unprecedented and, naturally, grand in all variations synonymous. I’m writing about love.

No, please please retain your seats. I swear this is interesting. Cross my heart and hope to eat duck. So let’s talk love. I’ll start. Love is bullshit…wait, someone gave me the wrong script. Okay, let’s start again.

Love is one interesting feeling that has the power to make or break you. It is something that, if you want to keep hold of your life, shouldn’t give in to. Why? Who the hell asked such a juvenile question? Get out of my class, dimwit! Wamma, we were where?

I cavorted with a girl a few months back and you know the totally unexpected thing that hapened? Yes, you guessed right. I misspelled “hapened”. It’s supposed to have a double-p. So I fell head over heels for…why the fuck is it head over heels? Obviously, the head is over the heels. Duh!

Anywho, when I fall hard for someone, I start acting really crazy-going on dates, kissing passionately, saying “I L U”, making her laugh…I know, right? I mean, who in their right mind does that? So I got into the whole thing and eventually got locked in it.

We occasionally had mini fights for reasons that don’t concern you and temporarily stopped talking. Every time that happened, I had this fuckin’ hollow feeling like my entire being depended on her staying in my life…

Waaaaaaaaiiit a minute. Which of you juju-infested, broomstick-headed witches tricked me into divulging this much detail? No more serious bullshit. I am here. So please throw all level-headedness out and welcome invariable inanity loaded with unsurpassed acumen. Let’s all join hands in welcoming…no, I said join hands, not clap. Idiots! Let’s all join hands to welcome His Rentedness, Sir. Erique Mununuzi.

EQ: Thank you, thank you.

Asker: So Mununuzi, umm…er…umm…

EQ: Where have I been? Well, here and there.

Asker: Wow, that’s a lot of places. Umm…

EQ: Why did I stop blogging? Well, because of this and that.

Asker: You’re kidding! Get outta here! And er…ummmm…

EQ: Am I back in business? Well, yes and no, really.

Asker: Okay, ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm….

EQ: What’s wrong with you?

Asker: Mm?

Magic:

I want you to take a deep breath, hold it in and imagine this cast in one movie.

Sylvester Stallone

Arnold Schwarzenegger

Jet Li

Bruce Willis

Jason Statham

Mickey Rourke

Terry Crews

Dolph Lundgren

Steve Austin

Eric Roberts

Now I want you to exhale slowly and shoot out of the trance. Voila, the movie exists. Watch out for the blockbuster Sylvester Stallone production, The Expendables coming out next year. Ooooh, I’m getting the jeepers already.

By the way, where’s Mr. Bazanye? I call his phone and it tells me “the telephone number you have called belongs to the person you are calling. But, as I’m sure you can tell, it’s off.” So where did he burst? Or in more correct English, oba he went where?

Lately, the apparent addiction to plastic surgery in certain arenas is increasing. The self hatred that causes one to run to a doctor to cut, slice, suck and inject one’s body and face- is astounding and speaks to the pursuit of society’s perception of beauty.

Being emersed in various cultures requires that you look and act a certain way in order be an unassuming member of that culture- has been the way of many mini worlds for centuries. Sociologically, the act of “fitting in”, or blending into the selected groups is human nature. However, the unnatural pursuit of conjured norms is dangerous on many levels. Beyond the fact that many could actually lose their lives-the entire falsification of “attractive qualities” means that the individual who has fraudulenty entered into said community is at risk of exposure. Being literally fake in a particular community that is authentically created makes the new member vulnerable. The constant fear of being discovered also creates an inauthentic approach to the community/society making it virtually impossible to live in peace. Looking over ones shoulder, amassing expense to “hide” secrets and just living in constant fear creates an unstable psychological being. That instability is projected onto the environment and further breeds because others are receiving the inaccurate perception of a culture/community/society from the minds eye of a fraud! Sadly, the receivers begin to mimic the inaccurate perceptions. They then become the carriers of regurgitated dysfunction.

The cohesive pattern of behavior that has manifested at this Chicago area high school is causing bystanders a great deal of concern. Why is it that 1 out of 8 girls (115 out of the approximate 800 school population) within this particular school in this particular community are pregnant?

The evidence indicates that there may be an unspoken pact, a pattern of deviant sexual behavior that obviously includes having unprotected sex or some group initiation that may be the root cause for the extremely high numbers.

Instead of talking about not doing it, community leaders need to respond to the possible root causes. What’s even worse is that the children born to these children will most likely be born into impoverishment

Steven Klein noted photographer has yet again used blackfaced models (instead of authentically black) to express his artistic “vision”. The lack of awareness about the extraordinarily raw subject of blackface has made many take notice and many others turn their cheek to receive yet another disrespectful blow to the face of the subliminal struggle.

White women have aspired for years to obtain the natural sunkissed glow of the melanin that preserves the timeless beauty that many African American women or women of African descent already possess. They as well as others, have begun the incideous practice of injecting botulism (BOTOX) in their faces, lips and wrinkle areas to save themselves from the natural aging process. The issue with this current “art asthetic” is that painting an individual black is no less than ignorant and no more than perceptually fatal.

There is a rite of passage that must be endured to wear the colors of those who are black, brown, yellow, red. A right that cannot be painted on and wiped away. An indignation has been committed against the photographer, the magazine, and all associated with this sociological blasphemy.

One is fully afforded the right to express him or herself in a manner for which they see fit, but it is categorically incorrect for someone ignorant in the culture of another to misrepresent what it is to be OF COLOR by painting a white girl with a lack luster brown paint for purposes of making it less “revolting”. The representatives of the magazine actually inferred that having an African American woman pose in the magazine or to adorn the clothing advertised would be a revulsion! For that statement alone these asses are denied any priviledges to “play” in my paints!

Postmodernity has not afforded an elevation in perceptions to the point that mediums can dibble and dabble in the “alternative” perspectives of old rot filled wounds that have been bandaged for years and never really healed because the subjects were always sore and uncomfortable. Globalization is still a foundling and needs time to gestate into a healthy, viable community strong enough to stand on its own feet without the assistance of bloodied crutches riddled with the bacterium of days gone by. Sadly, cultures outside of the United States are still very blind to the sensitive nature of our dark secrets.

Recently, Harry Connick Jr. had to come to the rescue of the Black culture by informing the Australian community of the insensitive nature of a black face routine performed on a show similar to our “Gong Show”.

The ignorant crowd joins in the mischievous performance by laughing and clapping. Proof positive that many Anglo

Though the claims may be lower the policies that regulate whether or not the unemployed are ELIGIBLE determine if candidates are still capable of receiving benefits under their pre determined guidelines.

Essentially, if a person obtains a part-time job just to have some money coming in or takes on temporary employment-they are no longer to receive benefits. It doesn’t mean their employment status has changed, it just means that some states dumb regulations determine the reduction in job claims. People are still just as unemployed as they were, however many people find some type of employ to keep from going stir crazy and that minimal income disqualifies their eligibility to collect unemployment.

This article would have the public to believe that the situation is improving and it isn’t…not just yet.
Is….

..a very thoughtful representation of what a world of literally disconnected humans would be like. Bruce Willis is the hero who is forced to “unplug” from his surrogate because of poor choices he made while using the robotic replica in effectuating the tasks of being a police officer. The environment that has been created by a well intending scientists who initially created droids to assist handicapped people. Unfortunately, as with a majority of things once it was in the hands of the humans-it quickly became a way for all humans to reinvent themselves a literally unplug from the human experience.

This movie is definitely worth seeing from a sociological perspective. It speaks volumes to the drastic possibilities for those who are convinced that they are unworthy as themselves, organically human.

I would love to start a dialogue about your thoughts, concerns or other pertainent points that the blog visitors experienced.

Abstract:

Stressful life events can increase the risk for developing a variety of physical disorders and emotional problems. A biopsychosocial approach can help mental health professions to better understand and more effectively treat disorders that are related to severe negative life events. Biological approaches focus on suppressing emotional reactions, usually through a reliance on psychopharmacological interventions. Psychological approaches usually focus on the cognitive processes that translate stress into distress. Psychological interventions focus on changing the negative attitudes and maladaptive behaviors that aggravate most stressful situations. Social interventions focus on improving social support and involvement with agencies to confront limited finances, unemployment, and housing problems. In these times of economic crisis and severe financial hardship, psychological and social intervention strategies appear more useful than biological treatments.

Despite 26 years as a genetic counselor, people are often a mystery to me. Here I present a vignette

Despite 26 years as a genetic counselor, people are often a mystery to me. Here I present a vignette that explores my inner thoughts and insecurities that can arise during a counseling session. It is drawn from no one specific patient. It may not be real but it is true.

***

“Have your doctors told you much about what I do or why genetic testing may be helpful?”

Playing her emotions close to the vest, eyes unreadable, a near-smile frozen on the face. She looks like she is posing for a photo she doesn’t really want to be in. Mastectomy, lots of chemotherapy; this isn’t going to be a walk in the park. She’s got to be feeling something.

***

What does she do for a living? Corporate VP with an international finance company. I wouldn’t understand her job even if she explained it to me. Every week she probably makes multi-million dollar decisions without so much as a second thought. But cancer is one situation you can’t control with a spreadsheet. Is it too early to reach into my bag of counseling tricks? Emotions are a tight rope. Wrong step at the wrong time, and the session goes into free-fall, with no safety net below. Maybe she thinks this is a waste of her time and just wants to get her blood drawn and get on with it already. Or maybe all those specialists scared the bejeezuz out of her, with their slick clinical lingo and impressive statistics. I sound just like them with my talk of oophorectomy and cancer risks. Who can grasp the real meaning of a lifetime risk anyway? Maybe I need to switch gears.

“You’ve met with lots of specialists this week. I bet you’ve heard more information than you bargained for.”

Well, she stopped taking notes. Maybe I can work her family into that opening.

“Have you shared any of this information with your daughters?”

A solitary tear, held in place by sheer will. Okay, now where do I go with this?

Short pause, then she replies “Tell me again the chance of this cancer coming back.”

She stopped that tear dead in its duct. She’s more comfortable when I play Medical Expert. Not quite ready to let the emotions spill over the dam, but it’s a start. I can play along with being The Great Authority for a while. She could be sizing me up to see if I am smart enough to earn her confidence and respect; nothing wrong with that.

***

“You know, you’re going to live, and probably for a long time. It will be rough going for a while, but you will come out the other side. You have good doctors and a great family. And I am guessing that you are tougher than your cancer.”

A hint of a smile, then a long pause. She’s struggling with this, not quite sure what to make of it. I hope I didn’t blow it.

“Will my insurance company cover the test? I forgot to call and check.”

That fell flat. I may as well just go along with answering her questions. Maybe it allows her some sense of control.

***

60 minutes, session over, and I am still unable to figure her out or if I did much good for her. She pauses at the door, and half turns to face me, tears starting to undo the make-up.

“Thank you,” she says quietly, ”You were very kind.”

Then she is gone.

Evidence of globalization, internationalism and interracial coupling are still causing unrest among those unwilling to embrace the HUMAN condition versus the stratification practices that have kept humankind divided.

Based on this snipet found on Youtube it is very obvious that cultures who are unfamiliar with other cultures feel it necessary to approach the unknown with the injected sensibility that the world feeds. The little African-Chinese girl, named Lou Jing ,provides what appears to be a rap on a popular “Idol” type of show. Was she asked to perform the rap so that her skin color would be more identifiable? Lou Jing was raised by a Chinese mother and has never met her father of African descent. She has been scorned most of her life for something she had absolutely no control over, and now to willingly appear on a national television program was considered to be the biggest form of disrespect to many who have no understanding of anything other than what has always been- tradition.

The greater issue here was that many in the Chinese culture did not want HER to represent them because she was not authentically Chinese (pale skin).

“As China continues to open up, this kind of phenomenon will become ever more prevalent,” says David Zweig, a professor of humanities and social sciences at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. “This is part of the process of internationalization, but we can only hope that Chinese people, including netizens and the people whose views tend towards extremism, can come to accept that there are many mixed-race people, both in China and worldwide.”

As for Lou, she found the whole experience more than a little disturbing. She did well in the show, ranking in the top 30 contestants before she was eliminated. Now she’s back to her normal life as a college junior — with a little new insight into her home. “Through this competition, it’s really scary to find out how the color of my skin can cause such a big controversy.”
