Released a few hours ago on the PTR, this is the most recent change to Eclipse.

Eclipse now increases damage done by Wrath by 40% (up from 30%) and the critical chance of Starfire by 40% (up from 30%).

I’m not on the PTR so I have no idea if this will off-set the nerf to Eclipse’s inability to chain-proc Lunar/Solar but 10% more damage to Wrath is nothing to scoff at and at least we aren’t dependent on an add-on for the damage boost. Boosting Eclipse while nerfing it was pretty predictable but I was hoping for a more interesting change. I didn’t expect one with this being the final build before Cataclysm, but we can all dream, right?

I’m quite enjoying the 2H Unholy DPS build, especially since I stopped being cheap and enchanted some of my off-spec gear. As usual, my “theoretic approach” of a spec isn’t as optimal as I had hoped and Elitist Jerks seems to think (what do they know? I’ve been a DK for 3 days, I know everything!!1!) a 16-0-55 build is the “best”. They also posted about a weird Imp Unholy Presence 2H Unholy build but I’m not trying to dick around with haste on DPS gear. I’d eventually like to collect 4T9 and move to a DW Unholy DPS build but yeah.. that whole time sink thing.

So far it’s pushing about 2500 DPS on single targets in shitty blue heroic gear, a green belt, 2 tanking rings (el oh el) and the sigil from the starting zone. It’ll only get better but right now it’s a blast to play.

I’m following the EJ-recommended rotation of – IT, PS, BS, SS, BS, DC, HoW, DC then repeating. Every second string leaves out HoW. The biggest snag I’m running in to is finding out when to put up Bone Shield after it falls off.

The 3 major glyphs seemed to be non-debatable with Dark Death, the Ghoul and Icy Touch. I was wondering why IT would be the 3rd slot but the extra RP lets me launch more Death Coils which is my 2nd highest DPS ability according to recount (under Scourge Strike and the normal melee attack).

I’ve been reading a bit in to the Unholy changes for 3.3 and outside of the nerf to the already lackluster Unholy Blight and 4T9 bonus, it sounds pretty awesome. Scourge Strike seems to have a pretty big buff coming and the Bone Shield change (will last for 5 minutes instead of just 1) apparently offsets the Unholy Blight nerf. Listen to me, acting like I know what I’m talking about.. I need to go back to casting SKY LAZORS!

With MMO-Champion predicting 3.3 next Tuesday, I’m glad I didn’t have time to get comfortable with my DK before things change. Unholy tanking seems to be a bit more viable in 3.3 thanks to the changes to the IT glyph and Scourge Strike so maybe I’ll give it a go then. Who knows? Fun character is fun.

Just a quick post from me in regards to the lastest buff to Eclipse. About a week ago, when it was revealed that Eclipse was being changed so that it would make the addon WiseEclipse unusable, Ghostcrawler posted:

Our intent was not to nerf Balance druid dps with this change. Our intent was to make a macro or addon that was quickly becoming mandatory at competitive levels not mandatory. It would be one thing if cancelling Eclipse auras was a fun or interesting choice, but since everything was so automated, the only thing I can really imagine anyone getting upset about was the dps loss, which we plan on offsetting.

Now, with the latest PTR update, it has been revealed as to how Blizzard intend to offset this DPS loss. It’s not anything new or exciting, it’s just a straight up % increase from a core talent (whether you like it or not). From MMO-Champ:

Eclipse now increases damage done by Wrath by 40% (up from 30%) and the critical chance of Starfire by 40% (up from 30%)

I’ve seen many people complaining about this, because they would rather a buff be added that didn’t rely on Eclipse (i.e. this buff makes Moonkin DPS even more dependant on Eclipse and thus RNG). However, Ghostcrawler has stated:

On the topic of Eclipse, we still consider it to be a major linchpin of the Balance talent tree and we have no intention of getting rid of it.

Eclipse is still the main focus of the Moonkin DPS rotation. This isn’t anything new, and the buff to Eclipse just emphasises this focus. Yeah, it can suck at times, especially for fights with lots of movement but, for now, that’s just something that you have to put up with.

But yay, new spirit beast in patch 3.3! Arcturis the bear can be found in Grizzly Hills, just north of Amberpine Lodge.

I don’t think I’ll be trying for this one myself, even though I do have a level 80 BM hunter. The only reason I created the hunter was to camp for Loque’nahak, which I eventually got (and absolutely love). I could never replace him. But good luck to everyone who’s planning on catchig this rarebear!

Today we have something a bit special, a guest post by Matt “Matticus” Low on the difference in healing between Trial of the Crusader and Icecrown Citadel.

I should underscore the fact that my only experience in Icecrown Citadel has largely been on the PTR. As such, the healing numbers and damage numbers could be different by the time the patch is pushed through live. I do not know if any changes or tuning will be made to the various encounters to ease or harden the bosses.

Suffice it to say, there is a marked difference between healing in normal or heroic Trial of the Crusader and Icecrown Citadel.

For one thing, it’s not spiky. Gone are the days when the tank can get rocked in half a second or less where the only thing that would save him was a clairvoyant Power Word: Shield. As it stands right now, it’s possible for current tanks to get 1 or 2 shot depending on the encounter in ToGC. This is largely due to the amount of avoidance that most tanks have. Chill of the Throne is a blessing for healers in disguise.

Consistency vs Inconsistency

The damage is manageable. Heals can be timed to the point where you can land them right after a hit on tanks.

“Weapon swing, heal, weapon swing, heal, weapon swing, heal, we- Oh, special nuke, Power Word: Shield”.

The incoming damage is fairly consistent and you’re not going to experience any spikes from 20k to 45k on the same tank or anything like that (with the exception of boss abilities).

AoE is… well, AoE

Love ‘em or hate ‘em, the whole heal the raid mechanic isn’t going to leave any time soon. Expect several auras or boss abilities that will hurt the entire raid. The environment is reminiscent of Sunwell when Resto Shamans and Holy Priests were the leaders of healing. Don’t expect this to be super avoidable stuff either. It’s no longer a question of avoiding the fire. It’s a question of who do I heal first so that they don’t die?

No dozing off on trash

You could get away with sleeping while clearing trash in Naxxramas and Ulduar (to an extent). But the trash mobs contained therein will be a test on their own. I don’t say this to try to scare you or build up hype. I’m doing this so that you can be prepared and gain an idea of what to expect. Our buddy Gluth has been converted into several trash packs complete with zombie chow and 90% health chomps. You’ll be fighting other Val’kyr who are related to the Val’kyr Twins in some fashion.

First ever healing oriented raid boss

There has never been an encounter like it. For once, we healers get to play a central role. Instead of killing a raid boss we get to heal a raid boss. I’ve already instructed my guild to keep a stockpile of bandages on them in case they haven’t. In the past, healers would chip in with DoTs or instant cast damage spells on the boss whenever they had time. Now it’s time for DPS to return the favour and squeeze off bandages during periods of no combat.

Again, I want to mention that this is the PTR and it’s used primarily to determine bugs in mechanics and the zone. Numbers can always be tweaked and adjusted later. It’s possible that damage dealt by bosses could be amplified.

Icecrown can’t come quick enough. I’ll be waiting.

It’s time for another shared topic! This week, the excellent Windsoar of Jaded Alt asks about our thoughts concerning the PTR and all the news it generates. Does having all upcoming information on hand spoil the game? Check out other responses on Blog Azeroth!

Aww look, I downloaded the PTR client, just for you guys

I’m going to share my honest, honest, honest opinion here. I’m taking a page from Rajjs‘ book and say that, as hard as I try, I can’t bring myself to care. Last week, my blog feed showed me angry blogger after angry blogger, up in arms about gated progression. At least, it looked like they were angry. I wasn’t able to hold my attention past the pictures and first line of each. I wanted to share the feeling, I wanted to yell “OMG ITS THE END OF WOW” and burn my keyboard over it, after all, I’m all about fitting in. I don’t fit in, though, at least not in that respect. For me, until I’ve experienced something first hand, it’s not real.

It’s my personality. I’m the same way about anything. In the hallway before a practical exam, my classmates are reeling in fear. I watch them squirm, wishing I was nervous too. My nerves don’t kick in until my hand touches the doorknob. Once my brain registers “the beginning”, I sweat and shake and say stupid things like everyone else, but not a second before. Same goes for fun things. I love travel. I mean, I LOVE to travel. I’d live my entire life out of my backpack if I could get away with it. Yet, an hour before any grand departure, I’m still reluctantly packing, whining about the hassle and god why the hell did I decide that it would be a good idea to fly across the continent again. The magic begins when I get in the cab. Finally! It’s real and I can’t be happier.

I remember trying to write about emblem changes way back. I’m not even going to link it, it’s that embarrassing. Surely, I would have something to say about it! I must, I must! But I wrote the whole thing coldly and my conclusion can be summed up by one word: meh. It took a week or two after 3.2 for me to think, “Yeah. Yeah, that’s pretty cool. I like that.”

Ok, so what does that have to do with knowing about instances, boss fights and loot tables before they go live?

Well, for one, I’m not going to actively look them up. They’re not real to me, I don’t care about them. If I do hear spoilers or see pictures, they won’t register. When I watch boss videos or read guides to prepare for a fight, I even have to take notes otherwise I don’t recall a thing. I have to live it to believe it.

Oh! but how I do love going into fights blind, observing and trying to figure out what’s going on. I remember the first two weeks of Wrath, experiencing the new instances, poking the new bosses with sticks to see how they’d react, laughing at our silliness… That was such a happy WoW time. In the past, I have looked for a guild that did boss fights blind, but found none. I do my raid homework only because I’m part of a team and there’s no good in being the only clueless person on that team. I probably would be a good candidate for PTR fun but I’ve never tried because…because… I’ve just…never tried.

And loot tables? Uggg, don’t bore me with loot talk! To me, loot is means to an end. I want to raid and I want things to die. I need X, Y, Z in order to raid and for things to die. Ok, fine, lets get X, Y, Z. There are exceptions and I do have some sentimental pieces stowed in my bank. What makes those pieces special, though, are the circumstances of their acquisition and not their mere existence. Do you know when I look up loot tables? Do you? Do you, really? It’s when I get asked what I need from somewhere and I don’t want to look like an idiot. Not a second before. (EDIT: Because there might be some new 80s reading this and getting the wrong idea, yes, I did read loot tables when I was first gearing up for Naxx. When you need to make large, quick upgrades, there’s no way around it.)

I must admit that I do enjoy listening to people talking about upcoming changes. I like listening to the guys on vent, I like listening to podcasts, I like to see which blog addresses which topics. What really interests me, however, is what person X feels strongly about as opposed to person Y. How does that fit together with their personality and how they play the game? Absolutely fascinating!

Who doesn't recognise the MMO Champion Logo?

I’m quite sure I’m in a minority among serious players. Good WoW news sites get tons and tons of traffic. Even I get a lot of search engine hits from people looking for news (I bet they‘re disappointed!). There’s always a lot of excitement, anger and other varying emotions buzzing when changes are announced or discovered. I would say that, as a general rule, the PTR and news sites add to the gaming experience.

Does the PTR and the news it generates take away from some people’s enjoyment of the game? Maybe. Some people love surprises on patch day. Some people, like me, love learning boss fights firsthand but can’t because they need to keep up with their teams. However, my thought on this is that if you need to learn things the hard way that badly, then perhaps an MMO isn’t the right kind of game for you.

On a side note, I do want mention that I loosely keep track of paladin changes throughout the patch testing, but it’s more to avoid panic on patch day than anything else. After a change, I want to be polished up and ready to go as soon as possible. I am what I am, but I don’t think it’s an excuse to be any less of a player.

I still try to care, I really do, but I don’t think there’s any hope. Sometimes I feel a smidge of guilt about not being more in the know. Just a tiny smidge. After all, it’s a pretty big game and there are other things to talk about than upcoming changes. There’s no rule that says “you must care about changes to game X amount of time before they go live”, so yeah. To each our own.

This is a Shared Topic from Blog Azeroth suggested by Anne of Jaded Alt.

To begin, I’m going to get a few things out of the way. I have never stepped onto the PTR. The one time that I tried I found the download of the client to be way too large (Over 10 gigs by itself? Really?) and honestly I would rather spend what time I have to play actually progressing with my character instead of doing things that won’t matter in the long run.

My only real experience with the PTR came in the form of a guild I was in grinding nearly to a halt because many of the key raid members decided they would rather get a sneak peak at Ulduar. To be fair, we were pretty much done with 10 man Naxx, and really had no intention of going into 25 man. However I personally still had a few little tweaks and things that I wanted to see on my character before 3.1 hit. Another thing that really annoyed me was that my guildmates decided that nothing else was worth doing, and that we were going to stomp right through Ulduar.

Time for the reality check. At the time, we couldn’t consistently complete Eye of Eternity. I knew that if we couldn’t get people so coordinated that they not die while on top of a dragon spamming two buttons, that we were going to be getting reamed in Ulduar. However, this is a topic best saved for another day.

We’re talking about the PTR! What do I like about the PTR? I like that there are people who have the massive amount of time it takes to go into the files and mine the crap out of them to tell me what I can expect from a new patch. It really helps create a strategy for what to do, especially for someone like me who doesn’t have a lot of time to play in the first place. I also find it funny that the new races of Cataclysm were totally discovered by the community, while Blizzard made the announcements like nothing had happened. I also like that the hardcore raiding guilds and other, “PTRers,” have no problem posting strategies for the new content. It saves me a lot of time and frustration.

Now let’s talk about what’s lame about the PTR. While it’s true that the PTR really has little impact on my overall game experience, there is one glaring issue I have with the PTR. I know that it’s a public test, and it’s meant to work out the kinks and all of the business of supposed balance. However, it really gets annoying whenever a patch hits, and it’s completely different from the changes that we expected, due either to balance or some kind of bug. I understand the reason for changes, but there have been some patches that are completely unrecognizable from the original intentions. I would just rather not know anything at all than to have to relearn what’s what five different times.

At the end of the day, the PTR isn’t going anywhere. It doesn’t impact my game experience in any massive way. Is the PTR the realm of the hardcore guilds that want to kick the crap out of the new content immediately? Maybe. I’m sure that it helps Blizzard implement new content and fixes with a great deal of ease, and I’m glad that I get to play a complete patch instead of a long series of hotfixes and, “Patch x.x.01a.” Star Wars Galaxies (Pre-Everyone Gets to be a Jedi-Days) was really bad about that. It felt like there was a patch everyday, and really looked bad on the developer’s ability. It doesn’t feel that way with Blizzard, despite the complaints of bugs and extended maintenance on patch day.

This post will be updated as the patch notes are updated.

Fun! Excitement! Amazement! All this and more! You will ooh, you will aah, you will scream and you will faint… Ladies and gentlement, your minds will be blown and your very grasp of reality will be shaken! For you have never seen the likes of these, the three-point-three patch notes!

Okay so they’re not that amazing, but still, let’s dive in.

Create Soulstone: The cooldown on this spell and duration of its buff have been lowered from 30 minutes down to 15 minutes. Cannot be used in Arenas.

I’ve always felt that the cooldown on this ability was rather long, and it’s nice to see it’s being shortened to bring it in line with the fact that instances these days are much shorter and faster than they used to be. More wipe recovery is good, no?

Affliction

Improved Drain Soul: This talent now reduces threat by 10%/20%, up from 5%/10%.

There have always been issues with Warlock threat, whatever Blizzard have said, and hopefully this will address some of them. The main problem is often that we can’t simply just let our dps drop to 0 to prevent any threat being generated, as our DoTs will continue to tick. Obviously this problem is therefore especially apparent with Affliction, which relies heavily upon DoTs, and so 20% less threat from two points in this talent will help out the spec quite a bit.

Improved Felhunter: This talent now also reduces the cooldown on the felhunter’s Shadow Bite ability by 2/4 seconds.

The developers are pushing quite hard for the Felhunter to be viable again (so Affliction will use it instead of the Succubus or mana battery Imp) and allowing the puppy’s main attack to hit more often – leading to increased damage – is a good way of doing it.

Shadow Mastery: This talent now also increases the damage done by the felhunter’s Shadow Bite ability by 3/6/9/12/15%.

As above – the more damage done by the pet, the better. Whether or not we’ll see the Felhunter become the de facto Affliction pet again I’m unsure, but it’s certainly going to be more of an option.

Demonology

Decimation: Redesigned. When Shadowbolt, Incinerate or Soul Fire hit a target that is at or below 35% health, the cast time of Soul Fire is reduced by 20/40% for 8 seconds. Soul Fires cast under the effect of Decimation cost no shards.

Right, wowee, some major changes happening here. So the current effect needs SB or Incinerate to hit a target at 35% health or less to activate it. This will be the same with the new effect, except Soul Fire will also proc it, which is nice. However, the current effect will reduce the cast time of the next Soul Fire by 60% (assuming two points), whereas the new effect will reduce the cast time of the spell by 40% for 8 seconds.

What this means is you’ll be able to cast more SF spells per proc – the number depends on your haste – meaning more dps per proc, despite the relatively slower casting times compared to the current effect. I would also assume that casting SF then refreshes the effect, so you can just keep going and spamming it, providing you don’t have to move or do anything else for more than 8 seconds. I haven’t tested this on the PTR, but if correct, we can say goodbye to the weaving technique of mixing SB and SF, and hello to constant SF spam under 35%. It’s simpler, but less interesting. Of course, we still don’t get charged any shards for Decimated SF spells.

Demonic Pact: This talent now also increases the warlock’s spell damage by 1/2/3/4/5%.

A simple buff to give us some more damage, since we Demo Warlocks are often bullied into speccing into this by our raid leaders for the bonus to raid dps, and it’s only right we should have some personal gain.

Molten Core: Redesigned. This talent now increases the duration of Immolate by 3/6/9 seconds and provides a 4/8/12% chance to gain the Molten Core effect when Corruption deals damage. The Molten Core effect empowers the next 3 Incinerate or Soul Fire spells cast within 15 seconds (Incinerate: increases damage done by 6/12/18% and reduces cast time by 10/20/30%; Soul Fire: increases damage done by 6/12/18% and increases critical strike chance by 5/10/15%). Molten Core now has a new spell effect.

Another pretty large change to dissect. The effect today (with 3 points) gives our Shadow and DoT spells a 15% chance to increase the damage of our Fire spells by 10% for 12 seconds. Lots of numbers there, but lots more coming up. So the new effect is firstly going to give our Immolate spell a longer duration – this is nice; more dps for less mana usage and less time casting. The next part of the redesigned effect will give our Corruption spell a 12% chance to trigger MC; we therefore have less chance of proccing it, as it can only be from one spell and the % chance is less, although admittedly it’s a spell we should all have up anyway.

When we do trigger it, instead of a bonus to Fire damage, we’re going to get a reduced cast time and more damage on the next three Incinerate spells cast in 15 seconds. Alternatively, we get more damage and crit chance on the next three SF spells within 15 seconds. Obviously you can cast either spell and get the respective effect, up to three times. What this change means for you in terms of dps depends on the fight really, but I suspect in general it will be a dps increase when the effect procs – the downside could be its chance to proc, which is less than it is now, as mentioned. It does definitely mean that we need Corruption up when we’re Decimating under 35% however, for the SF bonuses.

Destruction

Conflagrate: Redesigned. This talent now consumes an Immolate or Shadowflame effect on the enemy target to instantly deal damage equal to 9 seconds of Immolate or 8 seconds of Shadowflame, and causes additional damage over 3 seconds equal to 3 seconds of Immolate or 2 seconds of Shadowflame. In addition, the periodic damage of Conflagrate is capable of critically striking the afflicted target.

This is a nerf unfortunately, but let’s be fair, Conflagrate was getting pretty crazy, especially in PvP. The fact that the DoT damage (which only lasts 2-3 seconds) is a slight relief, but it looks like you Destruction folks will just have to spec Demo live with it.

Destructive Reach: This talent now reduces threat by 10%/20%, up from 5%/10%.

Similar to the threat reduction given to Affliction really.

Ruin: This talent now also increases the critical strike damage bonus of the imp’s Firebolt spell by 100%.

More dps from the pet favoured by most Destro Warlocks in PvE, whilst not increasing damage in PvP too much. This is simply balancing.

Pets

Avoidance (passive): Now reduces the damage your pets take from area-of-effect damage by 90%, but no longer applies to area-of-effect damage caused by other players.

More balancing of PvE with PvP – your pets will die far less often to those nasty bosses, but still will be killable by those nasty players.

Doomguard/Infernal: These pets now innately have Avoidance like all other warlock pets.

Again, just a balance to bring these pets on par with the regular ones.

Inferno: The cooldown on this summoning spell has been reduced from 20 minutes to 10 minutes. Cannot be used in Arenas.

Good for those few of us who use this pet to finish a fight with, or for if you need a really quick AoE stun, as we can now use it more often.

Shadow Bite: This pet ability now does 15% increased damage for each of the warlock’s damage-over-time effects on the target.

Summon Imp: This ability is now available from the trainer for level 1 warlocks and no longer requires a quest to learn.

Glyphs

Glyph of Life Tap: The effect of this glyph now has a chance of activating when Dark Pact is used.

While you should always be proccing this with Life Tap, because it’s frankly better and doesn’t prevent your pet doing damage, it will be nice to proc it “by accident” when you do use Dark Pact. I’m struggling to find any solid numbers on this, but I’ll give a more in-depth explanation.

Right now, the max level Dark Pact ability takes 1200 mana from your pet and gives it to you. Life Tap takes 1490 (modified by Spirit) of your own health, and gives you an equivalent amount of mana. Unless for some reason you have a negative amount of Spirit, Life Tap will therefore always return more mana than Dark Pact, so it really depends on your health and your pet’s mana as to which spell you use. With the new changes to the Felhunter and its Shadow Bite ability (which returns mana to the Felhunter if talented), the issue of draining this pet’s mana won’t be so much of an issue as it can keep doing damage, so if it does become the major Affliction pet, we could see Dark Pact become more prevalent than it is now. If you’re using another pet however, I would still recommend Life Tap to proc this effect; it’s also worth noting that Dark Pact only has a chance (numbers to follow) of activating the effect whereas Life Tap activates it 100% of the time.

Glyph of Quick Decay: This glyph allows for the warlock’s haste to reduce the time between periodic damage effects of Corruption.

A thrilling new glyph which looks set to help Affliction back up from the bottom of the spec pile, having this will allow your Corruption to tick faster according to haste, so while the effect will run out faster and require renewing, your dps should increase as it literally is more damage per second. Expect to need to make some changes to your Affliction rotation to allow for more regular refreshing of this spell.

Bug fixes

And to finish, a whole swathe of bug fixes…

Conflagrate: This spell will no longer benefit inconsistently from the talents Emberstorm and Improved Immolate, as well as the Glyph of Immolate and Tier 9 set bonus. Just as for Immolate, all stacking percentage increases will be applied additively instead of multiplicatively (+10% and +20% make +30% instead of +32%). In addition, Conflagrate used with Shadowflame will now scale properly from spell power.

Curse of the Elements: Rank 4 has been increased to 11%, up from 10%.

Drain Soul: This spell now deals 4 times the normal damage for all ranks. Previously it was only ranks 6 and above.

Glyph of Conflagrate: Now updates the tooltip of Conflagrate to remove reference to Conflagrate removing an Immolate or Shadowflame effect on the target.

Glyph of Siphon Life: This glyph will now modify the tooltip on Siphon Life correctly.

Glyph of Unending Breath: Now updates the tooltip on Unending Breath to indicate it increases swim speed.

Hellfire: Dealing damage to another player with this ability will now put the Warlock in combat.

Improved Shadow Bolt: This talent no longer causes a bug that removes all resilience from pets.

Soul Link: Damage transferred via this ability can now be prevented by damage absorption effects.

Suffering (Voidwalker): Ranks 5-8 had the incorrect taunt radius of 5 yards and have all been adjusted to a 10-yard radius.

Overall, it’s pretty good, and where it’s bad, it’s needed for balancing. I’m looking forward to testing the new Demonology changes in particular, and expect a report once 3.3 hits as to how everything is working. For detailed information on how the different raiding specs will perform with these changes, see the WoW.com article here.

Feel free to comment on anything I’ve missed or gotten wrong with regard to the changes. Also, what are you looking forward to most?

This is a shared topic purposed by Windsoar of Jaded Alt on Blog Azeroth.

At first glance, I wasn’t sure I had an opinion worth writing about on this topic. It was the same feeling I had when glancing over the previous Shared Topic of Best Change to the Game. I will try to address both items here and if you don’t like what is said then feel free to smear the website with tomatoes. (I will laugh at any who try such an attempt)

I don’t pay much attention to patch notes, news, or PTR information. *GASP* I think this is partially what separates me from hard-core gamers. I consider myself an avid casual player. I’ve read different uses for the term casual but in this case I mean it to be that I do not play everyday and I don’t raid. I pick up dungeon runs when I feel like it, and I quest or grind when I feel like it, and sometimes there is something on TV that I can see/hear from my computer that completely draws my attention from WoW. This does not mean that I’m not a true WoW gamer (whatever that may be) but it means that I don’t spend the majority of my free time reading and researching WoW…so says the WoW blogger.

When change comes I accept and embrace it. When the drastic changes were made to paladins and the times when other classes had to reset their talents points I didn’t let it bother me. After all, I was thinking, “Hells Yeah! Free talent tree re-spec that doesn’t cost Xg (amount depending on the number of times you already screwed up your stuff).” I usually make up my own tree anyway, hence the early knowledge of how much gold it takes to fix said screwed up stuff. I’ll do the research and check out the suggested tree for specific things but in the end I’m going to choose what’s best for me and the way I play. If one talent will help maximize DPS and another talent offers up some kind of buff that helps me stay alive, I’m probably going to pick the one that is going to give me the most survivability since I enjoy playing alone and don’t group a lot. When I decide to raid (if and when I get to 80 and if I get the opportunity) then I will look at suggested rotations, talent specs, and abilities. Until then I will play with what best suites me.

In regards to PTR’s and News websites all I can say is that I enjoy seeing pictures of cataclysm and what it holds, but I don’t plan on going to the PTR, researching the dungeons, and looking at the minutiae of the abilities. When the game comes out that is when the blogs and news sites can have at it in a hands-on type of way. In my opinion I don’t want to take advice from someone who hasn’t played said class or race in-game anyway. Especially since the PTR is just that, a Public TEST Realm, meaning they can change every thing that they tested and then laugh at us later (which is what I would do).

I understand why raid leaders and guild masters want you to research the tactics and videos for dungeons, but I think it takes something away from the game. That said, after the fourth-seventh wipe I’m frustrated enough to start biting heads off of kittens. Being prepared by knowing what spells and items won’t affect a boss is different from watching a how to video that plans out every move like we are a pack of thieves imitating Ocean’s Eleven.

Eclipse: Come Patch 3.3, you will no longer be able to chain back-to-back Eclipse procs so easily. A

Eclipse:

Come Patch 3.3, you will no longer be able to chain back-to-back Eclipse procs so easily. A cooldown is being added so that one two Eclipses cannot be active within 15 seconds of each other, in addition to the 30-second cooldown each eclipse has independently. From MMO-Champion:

Druid (Forums / Talent Calculator)

Eclipse: This effect will not activate again within 15 seconds of either type of Eclipse effect firing, in addition to the existing 30-second cooldown for each type of Eclipse.

Currently, if you have the addon WiseEclipse or use a /cancelaura macro, you can have almost guaranteed back-to-back Eclipses, proccing a Solar Eclipse with a Starfire still benefiting from the Lunar Eclipse buff.

To refresh your memory, the current tooltip of Eclipse is as such:

When you critically hit with Starfire, you have a 100% chance of increasing damage done by Wrath by 30%. When you critically hit with Wrath, you have a 60% chance of increasing your critical strike chance with Starfire by 30%. Each effect lasts 15 sec and each has a separate 30 sec cooldown. Both effects cannot occur simultaneously.

The 15-second added ‘cooldown’ runs in synch with the 15-second Eclipse buff. However, it persists even if you cancel your Eclipse buff (which is what a /cancelaura macro or WiseEclipse did). This means that this change is only a nerf if you used one of the two aforementioned methods in order to benefit from a buffed spell without actually having the buff. Yeah, for all those that were using WiseEclipse or /cancelaura, it’s a nerf. But only a very slight one.

2pc Tier 8:

Item – Druid T8 Balance 2P Bonus – Increases the bonus granted by Eclipse for Starfire and Wrath by 7%. (Down from 15%)

Yup, it’s a nerf. However, it’s a nerf that many Moonkins predicted would come. The 2pc Tier 8 bonus was really just too powerful for its own good. I personally held off getting 4pc Tier 9 because, (a) I didn’t have access to the ilevel 258 version and (b) the 2pc Tier 8 bonus was too strong to drop for anything less. However, come Patch 3.3, if you have access to the 4pc Tier 9 set, take it. It will be an upgrade over 2pc T8/2pc T9.

4pc Tier 10:

Item – Druid T10 Balance 4P Bonus – Your critical strikes from Starfire and Wrath cause the target languish for an additional 7% of your spell’s damage over 4 sec. (Up from 5%)

Yay, it’s a buff! It still remains to be seen how exactly this set bonus will work (as I commented on in this post). However this turns out to work, increasing the damage coefficient is always going to be nice.

Warlock Tier 10

This post will be updated as the patch notes are changed.

Well, with patch 3.3 looming ever closer I’ve decided it’s finally time to do a review of the patch notes and take a look at what we can expect, both as Warlocks and in general. Today, we’re going to look at the new features (from a Warlock point of view) that stand out to me as well as anything notable to do with other classes, and tomorrow we’ll examine the actual (much more exciting) Warlock changes themselves in detail. Here we go!

Meeting Stones: To use any Meeting Stone, it is only required that the character’s minimum level be 15. There is no maximum character level requirement for any Meeting Stone.

This is a very useful change for people who want to boost lower level characters, or even for people who previously would have been just slightly too low or high to use the stone when in a normal group and would keep the others waiting. I can also see the meeting stones being used as a method of transportation now – “Hey mister, can you summon me using that stone for two gold?”. At least it might relieve the pressure on us Warlocks to do it!

Area-of-Effect Damage Caps: We’ve redesigned the way area damage is capped when hitting many targets. Instead of a hard cap on total damage done, the game now caps the total damage done at a value equal to the damage the spell would do if it hit 10 targets. In other words, if a spell does 1000 damage to each target, it would hit up to 10 targets for 1000 each, but with more than 10 targets, each target would take 1000 damage divided by the number of targets. 20 targets would be hit for 500 damage each in that example.

This is pretty self-explanatory, but simply put, they’re preventing AoE damage spells from doing too much damage by giving the spells a damage cap. If you’re attacking 10 mobs or less, you’ll see no change from how it works currently, but if you’re attacking more than 10, you’ll only do as much damage as if there were 10, and the damage will be divided equally up between the mobs. I can see why this change is needed – Rain of Fire, for example, does some pretty crazy damage sometimes, and the dps does spiral out of control.

Pet Resilience: All player pets now get 100% of their master’s resilience.

Fantastic change for us! Our pets will be significantly less squishy in PvP now, making them harder to kill and reducing the time we’ll have to spend re-summoning them.

Lay on Hands: This ability will place Forbearance on the paladin if used on his or herself. It will not place Forbearance on others.

This Paladin change is going to be great for those of us who hate fighting them – Forbearance is the debuff which prevents Paladins from using their bubbles or wings, meaning we’ll no longer have to effectively kill one three times since they will need to choose between a bubble and a LoH. So we’re just killing them twice now.

New option – Castable Debuffs: Enabling this will cause only debuffs you have cast on an enemy target to appear.

Really, it depends on how you like your debuffs (read: DoTs) to be displayed, or even if you have them displayed at all, as to how major this change is for you. For those of us who do use the default UI to manage their ticking spells of doom, this change should help quite a bit, because unless you really care as to whether that Warrior has Sundered, you can now turn off all debuffs except your own. They should be much easier to find amongst the many with this change enabled, and indeed they should also show up larger so they’ll be easier to see, too.

New option – Consolidate Buffs: Enabling this adds a buff consolidation box near the mini-map. Very short term buffs (e.g. Replenishment) and very long term buffs (e.g. Prayer of Fortitude) are filtered into the buff box. The icons are stacked here, but they can still be seen by moving the mouse cursor over the buff box. Long term buffs will move out of the box when they are about to expire. Buffs such as important procs (e.g. Art of War, Maelstrom Weapon), cooldowns (e.g. Bloodlust / Heroism, Combustion) or limited in range (e.g. totems and paladin auras) are always displayed.

Linked to the above, you can also now make your own buffs easier to spot amongst the ton you’ll get in a raid by allowing the game to group and minimize all the Fortitudes and Brilliances you don’t really care about. Here, I’m thinking it’ll be useful for highlighting procs like Life Tap and Decimation, which can sometimes be missed if you don’t use an addon for them specifically.

Players will be warned when their talents are reset due to a new patch.

You’ll never be without your beloved Metamorphosis ever again.

Enchant Weapon – Black Magic: This enchantment now sometimes increases haste rating for the caster rather than inflicting the caster’s target with a damage-over-time effect. It is also now triggered by landing any harmful spell rather than inflicting damage with a spell.

I’m unsure as to the exact nature of this change (how much haste, how often, etc), but I do have a feeling it will be a dps increase for anyone out there using it. Putting another DoT on a target is nice, but it only affects that one creature, and I don’t think it’s affected by your spell power or anything like that. A haste increase will raise your dps against anything that you’re attacking, even if you change targets, and benefits all of your spells.

Target Effects: When this UI feature is activated, Fear, Silence, Frostbolt, and Hamstring will all now display text over the target’s head indicating what type of effect has been applied.

Nice and easy now to see who you’ve sent screaming in Fear, and who’s still to go.

Warlock T10 2P Bonus – The critical strike chance of your Shadowbolt, Incinerate, and Corruption spells is increased by 5%.

Warlock T10 4P Bonus – Each time your Immolate and Unstable Affliction spells deal periodic damage, you have a 15% chance to gain 12% spell haste for 10 sec.

These are the two set bonuses from the Tier 10 (Icecrown Citadel raid) items. The two piece is nice, with a simple 5% damage boost to all our staple spells for each spec, and the four piece is perhaps aimed more towards Destruction and Affliction Warlocks, with some tasty hasty. However, Demonology specs which use Immolate will still benefit here, and most of them do, so this ain’t a problem. You can see what the set itself looks like at the top of the post, in case you were blind and missed it on the way down.

Overall? I’m pretty happy with all of the above, and I can’t find much to complain about. Let’s hope the same is true of next time, when we examine the fun and exciting Warlock class changes!
