Once upon a time, we were fortunate to have PTV, it even exists today but has lost its soul for which it was part of our family ‘once upon a time’. The Ptv drama’s were near to life, which were realistic & entertaining as well, people were hooked with the TV set, specially during the drama hour, most famous serials were ‘Waris’, ‘Dhoop Kinarey’, ‘Ankahi’ and the list goes on. During early 80’s & early 90’s PTV saw its golden time, the last flick was from talented Shoaib Mansoor ‘Alpha Bravo Charlie’ which broke all commercial records in 1998. After that our television set was bombarded with dozens of Channels & hundreds of drama’s, the TV industry was so commercialized that they forgot the viewers, now fancy dresses, houses like castles, jewelry, glamour, brand new cars, branded suiting has replaced the core of drama which was script once upon a time. Eventually the dramas became unpopular among the masses and the talk show hosts took masses like Pied piper. The drama’s are now focused on land lords, industrialists & elite class, Today’s drama shows that all the people in this county are very rich, living in luxurious houses with all fantasies of life, this is something out of reality, most of the people live on a line just above poverty & far below luxury, As the modern drama give up the issues of common man, the common man has also given up watching these serials, because after watching life as un restrained fantasy the common man’s contentment is vaporized, the fall of TV drama’s is not only the void of entertainment for the common man, it is somehow linked with the sad demise of film industry as well, the thing known as “lolly wood” comprises of some seasonal kind of people, who call themselves artists, producing vulgar items which they call films, Thus for a common man in Pakistan, entertainment stuff which was already limited is now either vulgar or irrelevant. Both the movies & drama’s are not focusing common man in their scripts, movies revolve around thugs and whores, drama’s focus on the elite class.

It is true  that  we are famous in the methods of obeisance
But we are relating our story of pain out of compulsion

Though a silent orchestra, we are full of complaint
If the wailing comes to lips we are excusable

O God! Listen to the remonstrance also from the faithful
Listen to some complaint also from the one accustomed to praise you

Though Thy Eternal Essence had existed since eternity
The flower existed in the garden but  fragrance had not dispersed

Justice is a condition, O Lord of Universal  Benevolence
How could flower’s  fragrance spread if zephyr did not exist?

This problem’s solution was  the source of satisfaction to us
Otherwise was the Holy Prophet’s  Ummah insane?

The scene of Thy world was strange before us
Stones were adored somewhere, trees were worshipped somewhere

The eyes of Man were accustomed to tangible forms
How could they be amenable to accept the Unseen God?

Doth Those know who ever told Thy beads?
The strength of the Muslim’s  arm completed Thy task!

Saljuqs were living here and the Turanâs also
The Chinese in China and in Iran the S«s«nâs also

The Greeks were also living in the same habitation
In the  same  world were the Jews and the Christians also

But who raised the sword in Thy name?
Who reclaimed the despoiled world in Thy name?

We alone were the marshals of Thy troops!
We were fighting now on land and now in the oceans

Some times we were calling adh«ns in the Europe’s  cathedrals
And  sometimes in the scorching African deserts

We never cared for the grandeur of monarchs
We recited the Kalimah under the shade of swords

If we lived we lived for the calamities of wars
If we  died we died for the grandeur of  Thy name

We did not wield the sword for our kingdoms
Did we roam about the world fearlessly for wealth?

If our nation had been greedy of worldly  wealth
Why would we have been idol breakers  instead of idol sellers ?

Once firmly standing in the battle we were immovable
Even lions in the battle against us would be in flight

We  were enraged if some one rebelled against Thee
Not to talk of sword we were fighting against canons

We impressed  Tawéâd’s picture  on every heart
We conveyed this message even under  the dagger

Tell us Thou,  by whom was uprooted the gate of Khaibar
By whom was conquered the city which was Qaisar’s ?

By whom were the images of created gods destroyed?
By whom were the armies of infidels slaughtered?

By whom was the fire temple of Iran extinguished?
By whom was the story of Yazdan restored to life?

Which nation did become Thy seeker exclusively?
And became embroiled in wars’ calamities for Thee?

Whose world-conquering sword did world-ruler become?
By whose Takbâr did Thy world enlightened become?

Through whose fear idols did perpetually alarmed remain?
Falling on their faces saying “Huwa Allah O Aéad  did remain?

If the time of prayer right during the battle fell
Hijaz’ nation in prostration facing the Ka’abah fell

Both Mahmud and Ayaz in the same row stood
None as the slave and none as the master stood

The slave and the master, the poor and the rich all became one!
On arrival in Thy Audience all were reduced to one!

We continuously wandered all over the world
We wandered like the wine-cup with Tawéâd’s  wine

We wandered with Thy Message in the mountains, in the deserts
And doth Thou know whether we ever returned unsuccessful?

What of the deserts! We  did not spare even oceans!
We galloped our horses in the dark ocean!

We effaced falsehood from the earth’s surface
We freed the human race from bonds of slavery

We filled Thy Ka’bah  with our foreheads
We put Thy  Qur’an to our hearts

Still Thou complaineth that we are lacking fealty
If we are lacking fealty Thou also art not generous

There are other ummahs, among them are sinners also
There are modest people and arrogant ones also

Among them are slothful, indolent as well as clever people
There are also hundreds who are disgusted with Thy name

Thy Graces descend on the other people’s abodes
Lightning strikes only the poor Muslims’ abodes

The idols in temples say ‘The Muslims are gone’
They are glad that the Ka’bah’s sentinels are gone

From the world’s  stage the éudâ singers are gone
They, with the Qur’an in their arm pits, are gone

Infidelity is mocking, hast Thou some feeling or not?
Dost Thou have any regard  for Thy own Tawéâd or not?

We do not complain that their treasures are full
Who are not in possession of even basic social graces

Outrageous that infidels are rewarded with Houris and palaces
And the poor Muslims are placated with only promise of Houris

We have been deprived of the former graces and favors
What is the matter, we are deprived of the former honors?

Why is the material wealth rare among Muslims?
Thy omnipotence is boundless and inestimable

With Thy Will the desert’s bosom would produce bubbles
The desert’s rambler can be facing flood of mirage’s waves

Others’ sarcasm, disgrace and poverty is our lot
Is abjection the reward for Loving  Thee ?

Now, this world is the lover of  others
For us it is only an imaginary world

We have departed, others have taken over the world
Do not complain now that devoid of  Tawéâd  has become the world

We live with the object of spreading Thy fame in the  world
Can the wine-cup exist if the cup-bearer does not live?

Thy assemblage is gone, and Thy Lovers are also gone
The night’s sighs and the dawn’s wailings  are gone

They had loved Thee, they are gone with their rewards
They had hardly settled down and they were turned out

The Lovers came but with tomorrow’s promise were sent away
Now seek them with Thy beautiful face’s lamp every way!

Lailah’s pathos is the same, and Qais’ bosom is the same
In the Najd’s wilderness and mountains the deer’s running is the same

The Love’s heart is the same, the Beauty’s magic is the same
The Ummah of the Holy Prophet is the same, Thou art the same

Why then this displeasure without reason is?
Why then this displeasure for Thy Lovers is?

Did we forsake Thee, did we forsake the Arabian Holy Prophet?
Did we adopt idol sculpture, did we idol breaking forsake?

Did we forsake Love, and did we forsake the madness of Love?
Did we forsake the customs of Salman and Uwais of Qur’an ?

We have the Takbâr’s fire suppressed in our hearts!
We are living the life of Bilal  tée Negro!

Granted that Love has lost its former elegance also
We may have lost treading the path of Love also

We may have lost the restless heart like the compass also
And we may have lost the observance of fidelity’s rules also

Thou art changing friendship between us and others
It is difficult to say but Thou art also unfaithful18!

Thou perfected the Dân on the peak of F«r«n
Thou captivated the hearts of thousands in a moment

Thou consumed the produce of Love with fire
Thou burned the congregation with Thy face’s fire

Why are not our breasts filled with Love’s sparks now?
We are the same Lovers, dost Thou not remember now?

The noise of Lovers’ chains in the Najd’s Valley has disappeared
Qais has no more remained longing for the litter’s sight

Those old ambitions, we, as well as the heart have disappeared
The house is destroyed as Thou art not present in the house

O that happy day when Thou with elegance will come back
When Thou unveiled to our congregation will come back

Others are sitting at the stream bank in the rose garden
Listening to the cuckoo’s call with wine-cup in their hand

In the garden on a side far from the riotous crowd are sitting

The rose’ fragrance took garden’s secret outside the garden

The spring is over, broken is the orchestra of the garden

Only a nightingale is left which is singing still

Turtle-doves from the juniper’s branches are gone also

Remembering so many good people in one video is very rare, but hats off to String, they took us back to the people, we are proud of. Starting from Faiz Ahmad Faiz and ending with Waheed Murad, I doubt if they missed someone.
‘Nanha’ from ‘Alif Noon’, Mehboob Alam, whose name clicked our minds with PTV’s golden play ‘Waris’.
Ahhh…Rani, what a beauty she was and left so early, like Nazia Hassan and Parveen Shakir.
Graceful Khalida Riasat, who reminded me of ‘Aroosa’, Yasmeen Ismael, Jamshaid Ansari (chakoo hai meray pas), Shafi Muhammad, Sultan Rahi, Salim Nasir who ruled the golden era of PTV in 80’s.
Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Alam Lohar, Malka Pukhraj, Iqbal Bano, Salamat Ali, Amanat Ali and Allan Fakir and Ghulam Farid Sabri Qawal, everyone is there.

This popular show for children was premiered on 10th November 1969 and it is the longest running American TV show. I remember watching this show on Fridays (weekly holiday) in school days. There would be only one channel (PTV) and we all know it offered very little for kids to watch. I was never a huge fan of Sesame Street. Actually I don’t like puppets much. But I would love their how-to segments. Like how chocolate is made, how recycling is done or how crayons are made. I would adore that part and would wait for it.

But this show is nothing without the various puppet characters such as: Elmo, Bert, Ernie, Cookie monster, Big Bird, Elephant, Oscar the Grouch etc. My favorite character was… hold your breath… Count Von Count (The Dracula). He would be obsessed with counting stuff around. I could identify with him because I too would like counting things… money, coins etc. Okay that was a joke! I would like it so much the way Count Von Count would rise from his coffin!

For me Friday afternoons of childhood and Sesame Street are synonymous.

This show is still running and it is because the kids do watch it and they quite like it. This show has been serving generations. I reckon PTV still telecast it! You can check out the various characters here!

Ever since I started watching Pakistani news channels, especially GEO News, there has never been a day that made me proud of the media. Their childish reporters have completely modified the concept of a news channel. Most (or all) of their talk shows are about politics, and all of them end without a conclusion, leaving the viewers think like retarded fools. The media has brought a big change in the country, and most of the people think that it’s a positive change, but not me. People have totally lost their power to bring fresh thoughts and they’re just relying on the media.

I remember watching PTV News as a kid and that channel always made me feel proud of my country. PTV always used to show a positive side of the country and never forced the viewers to have any negative thoughts about their country. Since I don’t watch PTV anymore, I can’t give much comments on its current quality.

The only news channel that has impressed me is DAWNNEWS. There’s no other news channel of this quality in Pakistan. It doesn’t only show a positive side of Pakistan, but also makes its viewers realize about the increasing threat of Global Warming. It has proved to be a lot different than other Pakistani channels. Most of the Pakistani news channels have this habit of getting over-excited when breaking a very important news, and thankfully, DAWNNEWS doesn’t have this silly habit.

I hope that someday, the Pakistani media realizes that it is creating more tensions rather than reducing them, and that day will be one of the best in the history of the world.

Who else but the bawafa biwi who got murdered by her own husband – and still gave him the Presidency of Pakistan as her Parting Gift!

You get the basic idea I’m sure. Plus, they generously also add ‘or any topic of your choice featuring Benazir Bhutto.’

Hmmm……….

How about ‘Why is Shahee-e-Wafa constantly turning in her grave.’

It would of course be very statistical – I’ll calculate how many times, dear Zardari has added to her anguish by publicly proclaiming meri biwi dheshat gardi ki nazar ho gayi. Afterall, for someone who was wafa-dar enough to embrace shahadat for her husband, this whole deshatgardo ki nazar hona thing, must sound like an accusation of baywafai.

On a serious note, me and a reporter are actually considering sending in a revamped version of an investigative piece we did on her death anniversary last year.

We’d add all the things that were too sensitive to be aired. The SOTs about Rehman Malik & the DSP who was incharge of security that day – everyone knows what award Rehman Malik has reaped but the DSP was also given the charge of PM’s own city Multan.

There was also the matter of the ‘cause of death’. We could add back the SOTs that prove that a bullet was revived from her head.  Add the pictures taken IN the operation theatre. And maybe add a VO saying everything that we know but have no prove of – ofcourse, we would state is as a fact, rather add an innocent, yeh khabrain bhi samnay ayin kay…..

Hmmm….. only, I’m sure if we send that piece, instead of getting the 3 lacs, we’d end up paying more to save our skins.

Govt to monitor Thaksin’s SMSs

The government plans to closely monitor the SMS messages that ousted premier Thaksin Shinawatra plans to send directly to his supporters, to see whether they represent a threat to national security, Prime Minister’s Office Minister Sathit Wongnongtoey said on Monday.

Mr Sathit admitted it was not easy to control text messaging.

The government would also check the programme content of satellite broadcaster PTV, operated by the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD), following complaints that the programmes gives misleading information.

The political movement backing the fugitive politician was getting more vigorous, he said. He pointed to Thaksin’s use of a leader of a neighbouring country to pressure the government last week, and the stress it caused.

Last Wednesday, Puea Thai Party chairman Chavalit Yongchaiyudh paid a one-day visit to Phnom Penh and met Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen. He said latern that Hun Sen was willing to host Thaksin if he wished to stay in  Cambodia.

Gen Chavalit said Mr Hun Sen was full of praise for Thaksin and expressed sympathy for the “political injustice” he suffered in Thailand.

On arrival in Thailand on Friday to attend the Asean summit, the Cambodian leader said Thaksin was welcome to serve as his economic adviser and his government would not allow  his extradition to Thailand.

Govt to Keep Watchful Eye on Pro-Thaksin Media

The government says it will look into media that are supportive of fugitive former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra as their contents may post a threat to national security.

Prime Minister’s Office Minister in charge of media affairs Satit Wongnongtaey said he has not seen the flash-news short messages from ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra reportedly set to be sent to his supporters’ mobile phones but the government must examine their contents to see if they have any effect on national security and find out their origin.

The minister also said he has never heard a speculation that he will be replaced by senior Democrat MP Ongart Klampaiboon but added any Cabinet reshuffle will rest with the prime minister.
