One of the worst places to be in the Chicago suburbs on Black Friday is Orland Park. Guess where J and I were. Yup. Orland Park. We had made an appointment at Fred Fox Studio’s to pick out our wedding pictures. We needed to go to their shop to do it, so we had to do it when we were in town. The day we had free just happened to be the day after Thanksgiving.

J had thought she made the appointment for 1:30, but when she looked at the calendar on her phone, it said 12:30. Apparently, when we switched time zone’s, it changed the appointment back as well. Fred Fox didn’t open until noon and it’s a little over a half hour away, so we had to start driving before they opened just in case. Once we found out the appointment was at 1:30 like we thought, we headed to lunch.

I ended up blindly choosing Cooper’s Hawk Winery & Restaurant on South Harlem Avenue near 157th Street in Orland Park. It’s a pretty fancy place that has four locations in Chicagoland. Beside the Orland Park restaurant, they have shops in Burr Ridge, Wheeling, and South Barrington…all well off Chicago suburbs.

The restaurant is in a building labeled Cooper’s Hawk Plaza. When you enter the front door, you come into the gift shop and tasting room. You have to go through this room and down a hallway to find the restaurant. On the way, you pass a really neat private party room. It’s down a flight of stairs and lined with wine barrels.

We came into the restaurant and found the hostess station. The first room is a regular bar with a few tables. The next room is the main dining room. We were taken to a table on the far side of the dining room. The dining room is pretty neat. Along the wall opposite the windows is the kitchen. It’s open so you can see some of the work going on. In the middle of the room is a wine cask that I saw a waiter pull wine directly out of twice and serve it to a table by the glass. The west wall of the dining room is completely made of wine barrels. They’re just stacked on top of each other to form the wall. We could see another room behind that wall, but couldn’t tell if it was a private room or another dining room. It wasn’t being used at the time.

Neither of us are wine drinkers and it was lunch time, so we both ordered pops. J got a Diet. I got a regular Coke. Since we had already had a few minutes to look over the menu, we put our order in right away. After the waitress was done with that, she brought us a loaf of bread to snack on it. Not really sure what kind of bread it was, but it was delicious. It was still hot and served with a whipped butter. I sort of hogged the bread, but J was nice and let me have it.

For lunch, J ordered the Southwest Chicken Sandwich. The chicken breast was topped with shredded lettuce, pico de gallo, guacamole, pepperjack cheese, Chipotle mayo and jalapeno bacon. The first thing she noticed was the bacon. We’ve had jalapeno bacon a couple other times and it never really had a kick. This one did. She had a lot of heat elements on her chicken, but nothing that was really overpowering. The pico and lettuce somewhat did their jobs of cooling down the heat. She was a real big fan of the sandwich and passed up eating the fries so she could finish off the chicken. It didn’t really work. She still had some left when it was time to quit.

I ordered the Pepperjack Cheese with Jalapeno Bacon Burger. This burger is one of the chef’s recommendations. It comes with pepperjack cheese, fried onion strings, jalapeno bacon, shredded lettuce, tomatoes, and Chipotle mayo. I had the kitchen leave the mayo off then I removed the onions, lettuce, and tomato when I got the plate. I got down to the stuff I really like on a burger and all the stuff on this burger, I really liked. Like J, I really enjoyed the jalapeno bacon. It had just enough heat to it, but it was also sort of sweet. Overall, it was a pretty solid burger. My sandwich also came with fries. They were skin on and nice ‘n crispy. I finished most of them off, but left a few on the plate when the waitress came to take it.

This was not a cheap lunch. Before tip, it was $30. A lot more than I would like to spend on lunch, but it was good quality food. The pop alone was almost $3 a piece.

If you’re into wine, Cooper’s Hawk would be a great date night place. Hell, it would be a great date night even if you’re not. I’m a big fan of places that will serve you a great cut of meat, but also have a sandwich menu. Those are harder to find than you would expect and I appreciate a place that will put some effort into more than just steak and fish dishes. If budget’s not an issue, Cooper’s Hawk would warrant a return visit. For now, I’m glad I went because we really did have a great meal.

Want to know if the webmaster of a site is managing a few others? Then you can spy what he’s doing by tracking his Adsense ID.

Example with the site EcoGeek.org:

- With ServerSiders.com: Domains using the same Adsense account as ecogeek.org
http://serversiders.com/ecogeek.org

- With DomainCrawler.com: in the story of ecogeek: “The Analytics/Ad-codes pub-0578044100560991 and UA-385778 is also present on the domain, which it shares with 10 websites.”
http://www.domaincrawler.com/domains/view/ecogeek.org

- Ownerspy http://www.ownerspy.com/

- AdsSpy.com http://adsspy.com/search.php?q=ecogeek.org

- Google http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&safe=off&q=pub-0578044100560991&aq=f&oq=&aqi=

Note 1: Domains hosted on the same IP-address can also give clues, but you have to filter the results if it’s a shared hosting. Can do a reverse ip search with Bing:

- MSN Bing Reverse IP Search

Note 2: Quantcast, Alexa Google analytics and ad networks id other than adsense’s can also provide with clues, don’t ignore those tidbits of information!

Do you have other tricks to stalk and track a webmaster?

Know it’s been a hard week when you wander in
Greet the same old faces with a nod or just a grin
Clock upon the wall reads quarter to nine
Neck a jar of gravy and you’re feeling fine
Spot the natives from a mile off with their glasses of wine
Haven from the cold blown wind outside
Exodus from the mind-numbing rollercoaster ride
Done our nine-to-five

So we ask with ease
Another pint please

Lenny’s had a run in with the neighbours again
Julie’s whinging on about her boring friends
Dave’s a twenny-a-day man shuffled off to smoke
Lee’s a one-line silent type but a decent bloke
Forest on the table cos the bar-staff are a joke
Soggy beer mats soak sadly in the overflow
Won’t be getting shaved tomorrow let my beard grow
It’s the look you know

So I ask with ease
Another pint please

Some say men don’t gossip that’s a load of crap
Especially when we’re oiled and the drink’s on tap
We’re ripped off night and day couldn’t tell you a lie
Grafting ’til the hearse comes yet we’ll never cry
At most other times wouldn’t be seen dead in a tie
We’re all fools for licking up to the business class
They don’t know how it is to be short of brass
Over the barrel en masse

Fuck ‘em we all agree
Another pint please

Brie and Pepper Jelly

No Online Menu

When we leave home, I usually have a dining plan. I take pride in researching and finding the best place to eat along our route. For some reason, on our recent trip home, I didn’t do that. We just got in the car and started driving. J had just gotten off work and we were heading to Chicago for the holiday weekend.

It was about 1:00 and we were both hungry. I suggested just getting off in Paw Paw and seeing what we could find. J thought she had seen a place downtown but when we drove by, it didn’t really look like a lunch spot. I went to turn around in a parking lot off of Gremps Street and staring us right in the face was a sign for a Bistro. We didn’t see it from Michigan Avenue, but a Bistro sounded like a good place for lunch.

Bistro 120 is on Michigan Avenue between Kalamazoo Street and Gremps Street. The storefront is actually a O’Farrell McGuire’s Irish Pub. The Bistro is behind the bar with the main entrance from the parking lot behind the building.

We entered the Bistro and were met right away by someone who told us they were done serving lunch in the Bistro, but were still serving in the pub. We followed a hallway around the corner to come into a typical Irish pub setting. Along the wall were a number of two tops. The tables in the middle were all set up for six to eight people. The two tops were all filled and we didn’t want to take a huge table, so we took a seat at the bar. The waitress handed us a couple menus and said she’d be right with us.

We ordered our drinks while we were looking over the menu. The selections seem to change daily which is why I couldn’t find one online. I should have grabbed one of the days menus just to give you an idea, but I didn’t.

J ordered the turkey sandwich. They use fresh roasted turkey from Ottoman’s in Marshall. It was sliced pretty thick and put on a sandwich. What really sold J on the dish was a jalapeno cranberry sauce that was served on the side. She put it on the sandwich and really loved it. The turkey was very moist and tender. She isn’t too crazy about big chunks of meat in any dish, but these pieces of turkey fell apart in her mouth. Alongside the sandwich were some Ruffles potato chips and some coleslaw. Before the sandwich came out, we both got soup which was included in the meal. She chose a cheesy chicken soup which, again, she loved. She said the broth was like a cheese soup, but it still had the chicken noodle feel to it.

I went with the grilled ham and three cheese. This thing came piled with ham on a grilled rye bread. There were six slices of cheese…three above and three below the meat. Without the meat, this would have been a good sandwich. With the meat, it was great. There was a lot more ham than I expected there would be and I didn’t have to worry about leaving hungry with all the food we got. My sandwich also came with soup, chips, and coleslaw. The soup I chose was actually Linda’s Spicy Chili. It wasn’t really spicy, but it was good. I’m usually a little hesitant with chili because it’s usually more beans than anything. This chili only had a few beans and a lot of meat. Exactly how I would make it at home.

Our bill was about $24, but we really got a lot of food. Both of us were having trouble finishing and we didn’t even get bread before our meal. Our waitress said they had so many Thanksgiving pies, there was no room for rolls. She did get some done before we left though and she bagged them up and made us take them home. We never would have known that were supposed to get rolls so it was really nice of her to go out of her way to make sure we got some before we left.

I don’t know what the actual Bistro is like, but the food was outstanding even if it was served in an Irish pub. When we eat at places that call themselves a “bistro” I usually leave hungry. This was not the case. We got great food in family restaurant style portions. We found Bistro 120 on accident, but it was a great find.

Leeds or bust! We ran and ran to catch the train, but missed it anyway. We adapted and found the next was leaving in 4 minutes – but stood on the wrong part of the platform and missed that too. The next train wasn’t for 30 minutes, but as luck would have it, York’s rail station has a pub!

Stat Sheet 4: Coopers
££
Station Road, York, North Yorkshire, YO24 1AY – 08721 077 077 (ref 333)
Events: No info
Notes: At the rail station

Kat: Coopers is exhausting; but that might have to do with the fact that we ran pretty much all the way there from across town. We find ourselves at the bar after missing our train, twice. I decide to placate the boys’ moods by buying everyone a shot. Ron buys a pitcher of beer as advertised on the flyer from our table. Unfortunately, the barman is new and doesn’t realise the pitcher is specially priced, so by the time we get our money and drinks sorted out we have turned what was supposed to be a leisurely 30 minutes in the pub into 15 minutes of rapid drinking and cheersing followed by a crisp job to our platform. Overall, Coopers is an okay pub, suitable for those passing through. It lacks the charm of a city pub, though it tries with its black and white photos and stained glass room divider it just doesn’t hit the mark.

Ron: The only thing this pub really has going for it is its location. Our table is soaked in someone else’s drink, the barman was unfriendly and overcharged us. Coopers is the type of pub that looks like it is trying too hard to be a pub, you know the type? But once again the surly server won’t get us down as we are merely preparing ourselves for a night elsewhere.

Fortunately, the company is good and we lose ourselves in conversation. We clue in just in time to guzzle our pints, run out the door and jump on the next train. We’re thankful that we caught this one and didn’t have to wait any longer in the pub. For the record, Leeds was an exceptionally wild night!

Cheers x x

I’ve started reading a fantastic study into the unique pub etiquette practised in the UK called The Passport to the Pub. The study was carried out by SIRC.

It’s well worth a read if you haven’t already. Passport to the Pub
Here are my favourite bits when explaining how to attract attention when ordering a drink, they call it the pantomime ritual!

“To get served, you must attract the attention of the bar staff without making any noise or resorting to the vulgarity of too-obvious gesticulation. This is much easier than it sounds!”

“Don’t ever try to ‘jump’ the invisible queue. The people who reached the bar before you will be served before you.”

“Do adopt an expectant, hopeful, even slightly anxious facial expression.”

This etiquette seems to be something we’re born with in the UK, but it’s obviously so alien to others!

Whew, it’s done. Hive Mind Challenge 1.0 has come and gone like a whirlwind.

You’ll remember that the Hive Mind Challenge is a game that Adrian Hon and I developed. It’s a cheating pub quiz – you’re allowed to use any means necessary to answer the questions, including the internet and calling friends. In other words, the game’s a test of collective intelligence.

I arrived early at our venue, the Coach & Horses in Soho – only to discover a case of EPIC FAIL: the WiFi was down.

For a pub quiz based entirely on the idea that people are supposed to use google to find their answers, this was a bad thing, but I was very impressed by the resilience of the crowd. People came in and settled with their 3G dongles and smartphones, ready to tackle the task.

We started with some easy questions, to light the fire:

Round 1 – Easy

10 easy questions – Trivia stuff, easily Googleable

What is the height of the Eiffel Tower? (324 metres)

Niagara Falls is on an outlet from which lake? (Lake Erie)

Where is the world’s tallest structure? (The Burj Dubai)

Which player has the most Premier League winners medals? (Ryan Giggs)

What is the full name of the chemical family banned by the UN’s Montreal Protocol? (CFC’s – chlorofluorocarbons)

Who is the richest person living in England? (Lakshmi Mittal, as noted on the Times Rich List 2009)

Which flag is the world’s oldest? (Denmark)

Who designed the video games Doom and Quake? (John Carmack)

What were the names of Christopher Columbus’ three ships? (Nina, Pinta, Santa Maria)

What is the world’s third-tallest mountain? (Kangchenjunga, Nepal/Tibet)

Round two became a little harder, as people had to engage a little more creative thinking:

Round 2 – Medium

10 harder questions – Not easy to Google

What is the minimum amount of time it would take to send a message from Earth to Mars, right now, to the nearest 10 seconds? (A: 8 min 15 sec)

What animal is depicted on page 7 of the November 7th Economist (A: A bull)

What’s this Song? (A: New World, Devotchka – For this question, Adrian played a song on his laptop, and most people used Shazam to figure it out.)

What states in US border lake Michigan? (A: Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Wisconsin)

If you stood at the corner of Calle San Martin and Calle de la Duena in San Martin de Valdeglesias, Spain, and dug a vertical shaft straight down through the Earth’s core, where would you surface? (Answer: Main Street/Pioneer Highway in Palmerston North, New Zealand)

What event was taken as a bad omen by Constantine XI, shortly before his death? (A: Moon rising in eclipse, 22 May 1463)

If you took the Trans-Siberian from Yaroslavski station at 21:35 on Tuesday, when would you arrive in Ulan Bator? (A: 7:35 on Sunday)

What’s this song 2? (A: She Drives Me Crazy – Fine Young Cannibals Though Adrian played this one as a MIDI file, so it was un-Shazamable and had to be figured out the old fashioned way.)

For this question, Adrian and I made the British Sign Language sign for ‘Coca Cola’ and had people translate it into spoken/written English.

For this question, we informed the teams that we were going to ring two payphones in ten minutes: one in Oxford Circus, one in Clapham. If someone answered them with a team’s name, they got the points. One team got to the Oxford Circus phone.

We stopped for an intermission and tallied up the points. Round 3 was even harder – we honestly didn’t know how many of these people would be able to answer. For this round, we gave them a sheet with the questions all on it at once, and half an hour to solve as many as they could.

Round 3 – Difficult (but slow)

10 questions, all posed simultaneously – Effectively unGoogleable

agtaq gufnx mbvrp eselx vurnm xsmqc aqzxa gakro altam yrvtn tpqzy vgnbx nofqw gonov? (A: this is a Vigniere cypher, and the answer is ’stationx’)

What is the total age of President Obama’s cabinet in days – excluding Cabinet-level officers? (A: 312698)

What is this location? (A: Krak des Chevaliers, in Syria)

When David Cameron returned to London from this year’s Conservative Party Conference, what platform did his train depart from? (A: Platform 7, though I can’t find the link to the video where this was apparent)

Whose name is this? (A: Amenirdis)

Why did the engineers of the longest continuous-span suspension bridge in the world change the blueprints after construction started? (A: The Kobe Earthquake happened during the construction of the Akashi-Kaikyop bridge in Japan, moving the pillars 1 metre apart but leaving the structure otherwise unharmed. The length of the main span was extended 1 metre to 1991 metres to accommodate the earth’s new position.)

What is this constellation’s latin name? (A: Cetus)

How far apart were Adrian and Philip on October 30th, 2009 at 3:30pm, to the nearest 100m? (A: 320.06km. You can get this one from our Flickr feeds.)

Identify this Beatles song? (Revolution)

When is the next visible pass of the International Space Station from the birthplace of ‘The Chief Designer’, in local time (16:25:53, November 26)

The last round was quick questions, with people calling out the answers:

Round 4 – Difficult (but quick)

10 questions, posed consecutively – Effectively unGoogleable, but experts would know

How do you say ‘Good Morning’ in Arabic? (A: Saba al-kheer)

What’s the 100th digit in pi? (A: 9)

What plant do these leaves come from?: (A: Acer Palmatum, common name Japanese Maple – the picture contains several varieties of the species)

If you looked West from the walls of Constantinople on April 6th, 1463, what would you have seen? (A: Mohammed the conqueror and his army of turks.)

How many incorporated cities in the US have a population over 2 million? (4: NY, LA, Chicago, Houston)

What does this mean? 諜 (Spying/intelligence)

How many people have more foreign policy experience than Sarah Palin on Facebook, to the nearest thousand? (A: about 223,000)

What’s the score in the Fulham vs. Blackburn game? (A: this was an annoying question, as Fulham had the impertinence to score just as we were asking it. So 2-0 and 1-0 were both correct.

Who has the most Twitter followers in this room? (A: @jemimah_knight)

Overall, it was a fun evening and I had a great time. I think our players were magnificent, especially considering the bandwidth issues with the wonky WiFi. But as one of the Brixton Hive put it, “Usually messing about trying to get on the internet is annoying – but this time it just made it feel all MacGyver.”

We sure had fun, and we’ll be putting lots of improvements into Hive Mind Challenge 2.0.

See you there . . .

Location:

140 Cumberland Street, Toronto

Cost: Avg main is $13

www.hemingways.to

In the heart of Yorkville there’s a cosy little people (or celeb) -watching pub that has the likeness of some Great-Grandfather’s study. Green walls, heavy bookcases laden with old books, equestrian oil paintings lit up with dimmed wall sconces, antique wooden furniture dusty with age —-oh, hang on, that actually is my Great-Granddaddy’s study…

I got carried away.

But you get my drift, Hemmingways has the authenticity of an ol’ pub that Hemmingway himself might have frequented, but with a menu that’s a mash-up of Eastern and Western delights, ie: bruschetta, spring rolls, escargot, Boston Clam chowder, Caesar salads, Greek salads, Tandoori what-nots, roti, pad thai, kung pao whatsits, souvlaki, fajitas….it’s a really eclectic menu.

I had the chicken souvlaki once and it was great; couldn’t complain. I did however complain about the wine which tasted like that cloth one uses to wipe up counters…YOU know the one! They even confessed that they had that particular bottle sitting out for a while and opened a new one for me.

Besides that one incident (and I only ordered beer after that night), Hemmingways is quite simply: cosy.

And if you can’t make up your mind on what to have for dinner, or if you have picky company to dine with, go to Hemmingways. Lots of food options PLUS beer.
