Readings by María. Psychic Tarot Cards. She will tell your past, present and future.

This year, Rachel and I were invited to our friend Daisy’s house for Thanksgiving. Thanksgivin

This year, Rachel and I were invited to our friend Daisy’s house for Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is a time for celebration family traditions, and like many families, Daisy Martinez’s yearly observance of the holiday is one of integrating her American-ness with her cultural identity, which is Puerto Rican and Latino.

Turkey (“Pavo” in Latin-American Spanish) the iconic American centerpiece of Thanksgiving, has also been integrated into Puerto Rican culture as Pavochon, which was probably created by New York Puerto Rican immigrants (“Newyoriquens“) between 50 and 70 years ago as an affordable substitute for roast pork, or Lechon, for Christmas.

Related: A Jewish Puerto Rican Thanksgiving (2008)

Like Lechon, Pavochon is rubbed with a garlic, salt/pepper and oregano wet adobo and marinated for over 24 hours and then roasted. This one was marinated for 48. In the last half a century, Pavochon has since been imported back to Puerto Rico, is a popular dish eaten throughout the year and is served alongside Lechon in the central Guavate region.

Click on the “Read the rest of this entry” link below for more.

Daisy looks on attentively as our chief pavo surgeon, Dr. Jerry, performs the slicing.

The “real” Daisy kitchen features a vintage Garland stove that was rescued from her father’s New York city firehouse. This Garland is similar to the model that Julia Child used to cook on.

As if there was any doubt this was a Puerto Rican household, a pot of Pasteles heating up. These were FEDEXed from Miami by Daisy’s mom and enjoyed by everyone.

Daisy puts the finishing touches on her soup course.

This is a Calabaza (caribbean pumpkin) soup with spicy jalapeno lump crabmeat. Sensational.

Beautiful white meat piles up on the platter. I have to sneak some.

Sauteed Brussel Sprouts.

Pavochon, all carved up.

This stuffing is Daisy’s dad’s recipe, a firehouse favorite with Italian sausage.

Pass the stuffing please!

Other sides featured the traditional Puerto Rican Arroz con Gandules, Creamed Spinach and a Mexican-style stuffing made with tortillas and chipotle peppers, similar to a chilequiles.

Pass the turkey please!

Now THAT is what I call a Thanksgiving plate.

Since we didn’t do any cooking this year, I decided to bring a couple of wines over to pair with the meal. This is a 1963 Romariz port, for the cheese course.

The cheese course, featuring a blue Valdeon from Spain, two hard sheeps milk cheeses and a Chablis-washed triple cream similar to an Epoisses.

Dessert: Apple/Pear pie, a Fig and nut Tart (which went great with a 1988 Riesling Beerenauslese) and chocolate brownie.

Hosted by the Puerto Rico Association of Architects and Landscape Architects, the XI Architecture Biennial of Puerto Rico is presently taking place along the Paseo de la Princesa [Princesa Promenade] in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico. The biennial, which began on November 17 and will end on November 30, 2009, celebrates the best in local architecture over the past five years.
Hat tip to John Aravosis at Americablog, who linked the comments of the mother of the late Matthew Shepard, lynched near Laramie, Wyoming in 1998.

Dennis and I, and the entire board and staff of the Matthew Shepard Foundation, stand with all who are grieving the loss of Jorge Steven Lopez Mercado in one of the most shockingly brutal hate crimes in Puerto Rico’s history.

While we are grateful to the local law enforcement officials for their swift work to apprehend the suspect in this terrible crime, we remain deeply saddened that yet another family should have to suffer the pain of such a tragedy, and that such breathtaking violence continues to be directed at gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered people who are simply trying to live their lives honestly and openly.

For another young person to lose their life and be taken from their family and community due to fear, prejudice and hatred is simply unacceptable. Each of us who believe in freedom and equality must remain vocal, active, and unrelenting in calling for justice.

Our thoughts are with Mr. Lopez, all who knew and loved him, the members of his community and the millions worldwide who have been touched by his senseless death. Our family and the Foundation will continue to work to prevent similar tragedies in any way we can.

(In a previous article, I had identified the suspected killer of Lopez Mercado as Jose Bermudez. That was incorrect. His name is Juan A. Martinez Matos.)

Earlier, in Toa Alta, Puerto Rico, the ashes of Jorge Steven Lopez Mercado were laid to rest Monday, November 23. His funeral was attended by upwards of a thousand people, among them his mother and father, family and friends, in a very public show of support, affection, and defiance on behalf of the young man who was butchered to death by another young man whose defense prepares to use the homosexual panic argument to win acquittal. Judge Madeline Vega has set a bond of $4 million dollars for prime suspect Juan A. Martinez Matos, 26, for a first degree murder charge.

The ACLU of Puerto Rico has jumped into the fray, after closely watching events unfold for the past week, calling the murder a hate crime. Pink News out of Britain hinted that Matos may be the first to be charged with murder under the new Matthew Shepard -James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act, which was just signed by President Obama, if they fail to indict him under Puerto Rican law.

“The support we have received from the public and Steven’s friends has given us the strength to bear this moment of such horrible pain,” Lopez’s aunt Rubi Mercado told El Nuevo Dia between tears (as translated from Spanish into English.) “I asked Steven with his wings from heaven to help us carry on without having him by our side.”

Miriam Mercado and her son, Jorge Steven Lopez Mercado, flashing his signature finger sign, in happier times. Contrary to other parents of color, she loved him more, even when he admitted he was gay (Courtesy: Queerty)

El Nuevo Dia further reported López’s aunt and his ex-boyfriend, Luis Rivera, opened the urn that contained the murdered teen’s ashes and placed a necklace and a white rose inside it at the end of the funeral Mass. The newspaper further reported López’s parents hugged their son’s friends and cried.

“We definitely hope people and society wake up and demand justice,” López’s friend José Alicea told El Nuevo Dia (as translated from Spanish into English.)

Yesterday, however, due to pressure from Puerto Rico’s two congresspeople, the ACLU of Puerto Rico, and many others, the authorities have agreed to investigate Lopez Mercado’s decapitation murder as a hate crime.

El Nuevo Dia reported William Ramírez, executive director of the ACLU and of the University of Puerto Rico’s Legal Clinic, pointed out to Puerto Rico Department of Justice Secretary Antonio Sagardía the Commonwealth has a history of “not investigating hate crimes cases” like the one he said to which Juan A. Martínez Matos reportedly has confessed.

“The ACLU has tried to get the government to accept its responsibility to investigate cases… that are hate crimes, particularly that of young Jorge Steven López Mercado,” Ramírez said in a statement. “We should not be satisfied with the possibility the federal government will do what our government is not interested in doing; which is to protect every citizen.”

Activists on Puerto Rico and around the country have repeatedly called upon local authorities to charge Matos under Puerto Rico’s hate crimes law, which includes sexual orientation. They have also blasted investigator Ángel Rodríguez Colón’s assertion López somehow contributed to his own death. The Federal Bureau of Investigation in San Juan has not ruled out the possibility of additional federal charges in the case.

Regarding Ángel Rodríguez Colón, the police investigator’s initial response to the murder enraged gay activists and supporters when he said, “These types of people, when they enter this lifestyle and go out into the streets, know that this could happen.”

Hah. Those types of people. Who enter this lifestyle. What about women who go out into the streets and are sometimes raped, whether they are prostitutes or not? So these women ask for it? Should they be forced to stay home rather than be penalized for making a salary, going to a restaurant, or merely meeting a friend? This is just the kind of mindset among law enforcement that needs to be broken like a stick over a knee and thrown away. A killing is a killing; a rape is a rape. Nobody asks for this kind of thing. Nobody.

What would really be interesting is for Colón to find out just how many of those so-called “real men,” those straight macho guys of the area, deliberately pick up a boy dressed as a woman, know the difference, and don’t even care. Bet he wouldn’t have very much to say then, especially if he knew some of them in government or in business.

The family of Steven Lopez, though, didn’t really need a pronouncement from Judy Shepard to humanize their dead son and brother. As Queerty believes, Miriam Mercado has quickly become the Judy Shepard of Puerto Rico. Here are her extraordinary words:

“When my son told me he was gay, I told him, ‘Now, I love you more’. I want to tell the world that hatred is not born with human beings, it is a seed that is planted by adults and is fostered creating a climate of intolerance and violence. We must change our ways and understand that anyone… could have been my son. And I want everybody to know that Jorge Steven was a very much loved son.”

Boston – EDGE Boston reports Wednesday that the heinous murder of Puerto Rican gay teen, Jorge Steven López Mercado, will be investigated as an anti-LGBT hate crime. This is a victory for LGBT activists on the island and on the mainland who have repeatedly called for the police to pursue the case as a hate murder. Pedro Julio Serrano, point person for LGBT activism in Puerto Rico, drew international attention to the heterosexist and homophobic attitude of police investigators who at the onset of the case, blamed the gay youth for his own death. Serrano and others blasted police investigator Ángel Rodríguez Colón for stating to the press that gay people who live their lives openly can simply expect bad things to happen to them. Colón was replaced as overseer of the case. After meeting with representatives of the American Civil Liberties Union, Puerto Rican authorities finally have agreed to conduct the investigation as a hate crime murder. Pointing out that no LGBT person has ever been tried under the provisions of the Puerto Rican hate crimes statute of 2002, the ACLU argued that it was past time for alleged murderers like Juan A. Martínez Matos, who has confessed to slaughtering 19-year-old López Mercado in an anti-gay rage, to be prosecuted as a bias-motivated perpetrator. Matos is apparently preparing to plead some form of insanity or ‘gay panic’ defense based on accounts of his childhood. Nueva Dia reports that Henry Ramirez, ACLU executive in Puerto Rico as well as head of the Legal Clinic at the University of Puerto Rico, convinced Puerto Rico Department of Justice Secretary Antonio Sagardía that the time for deflecting the issue of hate crimes against LGBT people in the Commonwealth is long past. In a statement to the public, Ramirez said, in part, “The ACLU has tried to get the government to accept its responsibility to investigate cases… that are hate crimes, particularly that of young Jorge Steven López Mercado. We should not be satisfied with the possibility the federal government will do what our government is not interested in doing; which is to protect every citizen.” The FBI is monitoring events, and may yet intervene in the case with federal charges. LGBT advocates have long pointed out that the social climate for LGBT Puerto Ricans is hostile. Conservative Roman Catholic and Protestant attitudes are well-entrenched and powerful throughout most of the Commonwealth. Heterosexist and homophobic machismo plays a role in pathologizing LGBT people, as well. Police attitudes are reflective of these negative cultural assumptions. The López Mercado case may prove to be a watershed for LGBT advocacy in Puerto Rico, and perhaps other places in the Caribbean. The manner of his death, decapitation, dismemberment, and partial immolation of his body are hallmarks of homophobic rage and bias-motivated hate crime in such obvious ways as to make a hate crime conclusion unavoidable. López Mercado’s youth also makes this case notable from a media standpoint. In many ways, Jorge Steven López Mercado may turn out to be Puerto Rico’s Matthew Shepard.

An agreement was signed today that will allow for the scanning and digital access of all the manuscripts and documents produced by Spanish poet Juan Ramón Jiménez Moguer during the 20 years he lived in exile in Puerto Rico. The collection includes approximately 150,000 documents of which an estimated one third is still unpublished. It includes correspondence with nearly all members of Generation of ‘27 writers like Antonio Machado and Miguel de Unamuno, as well as the likes of Jorge Luis Borges and Ezra Pound.

Jiménez (1881-1958) belonged to the group of writers who, in the wake of Spain’s loss of her colonies to the United States (1898), staged a literary revival. The leader of this group of modernistas, as they called themselves, Rubén Darío, helped Juan Ramón to publish Almas de violeta (Souls of Violet), 1900, his first volume of poetry. The years between 1905 to 1912 Ramón Jiménez spent at his birthplace, Moguer, where he wrote Elejías puras (Pure Elegies), 1908, La soledad sonora (Sonorous Solitude), 1911, and Poemas mágicos y dolientes (Magic Poems of Sorrow), 1911. His early poetry was influenced by German Romanticism and French Symbolism. It is strongly visual and dominated by the colours yellow and green. His later style, decisive, formally ascetic, and dominated by white, emerges in the poetic prose of his delicate Platero y yo (Platero and I), 1914, and is fully developed in Diario de un poeta recién casado (Diary of a Newly-Wed Poet), 1917, written during a trip to the United States, as well as in Eternidades (Eternities), 1918, Piedra y cielo (Stone and Sky), 1919, Poesía (Poetry), 1923, and Belleza (Beauty), 1923. In the twenties, Ramón Jiménez became the acknowledged master of the new generation of poets. He was active as a critic as well as an editor of literary journals. In 1930 he retired to Seville to devote himself to the revision of his earlier work. Six years later, as the result of the Spanish Civil War, he left Spain for Puerto Rico and Cuba. He remained in Cuba for three years and, in 1939, went to the United States, which became his residence until 1951, when he moved definitely to Puerto Rico. During these years Juan Ramón taught at various universities and published Españoles de tres mundos (Spaniards of Three Worlds), 1942, a book of prose portraits, and several collections of poems, among them Voces de mi copla (Voices of My Song), 1945, and Animal de fondo (Animal of Depth). The latter book, perhaps his best, clearly reveals the religious preoccupations that filled the last years of the poet’s life. Selections from most of his works were published in English translation in Selected Writings of Juan Ramón Jiménez and Three Hundred Poems, 1903-1953. Ramón Jiménez died in Puerto Rico in 1958.

In case you are thinking of purchasing the new global version of Amazon’s Kindle for Christmas, be aware that there are still quite a few places that the global version will NOT work. I was disappointed to find that the new version still will not work in my country.

Apparently the new global version will only work in SOME countries. I thought it would be helpful to most expats to have a complete list of which countries it will, or will not work in (below).

It’s also interesting to note the PATTERN of groups of countries where the Kindle doesn’t work–some countries probably lack satellite coverage or delivery systems, while others probably don’t WANT readers to be able to download whatever they want by satellite.

When I lived in Pittsburgh, it seemed to me that no place in the United States could possibly be less touched by Hispanic culture than that city. The few Mexican restaurants there were tucked in remote, faceless strip malls. Ketchup appeared to still outpace salsa in condiment sales. And, at least when I was living there, the largest Hispanic enclave was in Beechview and numbered a whopping 147 people (according to the 2000 Census). Then this fall I went to Hawaii, which usually ranks at or near the bottom of all states for percentage of Hispanic residents, and I found a world where even Taco Bells are scarce. However, there is one large immigrant population from the Spanish-speaking world in the state, and it draws ire from the locals of course. That would be the infamous Puerto Rican coquí frog, which made its way to the islands probably in ornamental plant shipments sometime in the mid-1990s.

Friend or Foe?

Now coquís are cute little guys, and they have one very distinct feature: their vocal endowment. The males of the species spend evenings, nights, and early mornings belting out a repetitive onomatopoeic co-QUI, co-QUI, co-QUI over and over and over again. And let me tell you, size means nothing. Apparently they’ve been measured at 100 dB. The frogs are adored in their native Puerto Rico. They are a kind of unofficial state animal of the territory, and you can easily find toys, CDs, T-shirts, stickers, buttons, and whatnot featuring them there. Locals claim to find their call soothing and an integral part of Caribbean nights. In Hawaii, it’s a different story. Most people there think they’re irritating pests. They’re loud, they’re changing the ecosystem, and…gulp…they might affect tourism! Some take this “pest” problem into their own hands, which usually hold a hammer of some sort. Others have grown to love them.

Dolphin Bay Hotel: Site of Future Immigration Sting?

I encountered their choruses while spending a pleasant few nights at the Dolphin Bay Hotel in Hilo on the Big Island (a great place to stay, by the way). Apparently the hotel has gotten plenty of complaints from folks in the past–each room is stocked with ear plugs. (Never seen that before!) While I understand the threat that coquís present, especially for forest birds, it seems to me that they are permanent residents now. And personally, I found their night songs incredibly peaceful and easy to sleep by. Judge for yourself…
