That’s not a good thought to have when you pug a group as a healer and everyone is ready to go

That’s not a good thought to have when you pug a group as a healer and everyone is ready to go.

My poor priest has not gotten much love since the newest patch came out. Before, he was my go-to guy for seeing new content.

As I mentioned before, he was basically my ticket into pugging raids. Everyone needs a healer, so I focused on him and got him into many instances and raids.

As soon as I got comfortable, though, I kind of abandoned him for my DPS shaman. DPS meant I had to deal with recount meters and everyone comparing e-peens, but at least I took some of the pressure off myself in worrying about keeping everyone alive.

Most of my guild was gone for the holiday, so it was pretty quiet in-game. I decided to dust off my priest and take him for a spin.

The heroic daily was Utgarde Keep. Easy peasy, I could heal UK in my sleep.

I put myself in LFG and almost immediately get an invite. Even better, the group is already full, so I don’t have to sit around waiting for them to pick up a tank.

(If I ever muster up more courage, I might one day roll a tank. Those things are harder to find than healers sometimes.)

For some reason, as I’m on the bird from Dalaran to Howling Fjord, I start psyching myself out on whether or not I can still heal.

As a healer, the hardest raid I’ve healed is Naxx 25. He’s never healed Ulduar or Ony or TotC, all content that my shaman has DPS’ed.

But still – it’s UK! C’mon. Unless I’ve somehow grouped with the worst tank and face-pulling-DPS ever then this should be a cake walk.

I start reviewing my spells on the flight.

Nothing looks right.

Shadow Word: Pain? Mind Flay? WTH is this stuff?

Fail.

Apparently the last time I played I was in my shadow build. That might make healing a bit more difficult.

I land and switch out builds real fast. I get to the instance as the last person is being summoned in.

We buff and the tank gets into position.

Then I get the thought?

“I think I forgot how to heal”.

Where is this thought coming from? This is ridiculous.

Besides, there is no more time. The tank has started pulling.

I start off as I always do and fling a Prayer of Mending at the tank.

And thankfully it all starts coming back to me.

Renew. Flash Heal. Circle of Healing.

The spells that I had blanked on were now being cast as the situation called. On each stupid little trash pull I felt my confidence rise.

Then we got to the room with all of the proto-drakes.

I have to backtrack a bit and mention that the pug I was in wasn’t a bad one. The tank was doing a good job on aggro, both in keeping it on himself and getting it back. The DK wasn’t trying to offtank or anything crazy. The feral druid was pulling the best DPS, the warlock the lowest but no problems either way.

So I was a bit surprised when we pulled virtually the entire room.

Normally when I’ve done this room we’ve only pulled one group at a time. Sometimes we’ll get a second group if someone is not watching their placement.

But, all of a sudden, I was in a sea of proto-drakes and Vrykul.

Aaaaargh! We are going to wipe.

Oh well, might as well take out as many as we can.

I was throwing all my instant heals out. Shields. Guardian Spirit, don’t fail me now.

Heal, heal, heal.

And then, somehow, we were standing on a pile of proto-drake corpses.

We had all made it out alive.

I would totally like to take credit, but I know that everyone helped to get us out. The lock might have had the lowest DPS, but I’m sure the Fel Healthstone he gave out at the beginning of the run helped as well.

Thankfully the rest of the run was much smoother.

But what do you know? I guess I did remember to heal after all.

It’s been said that ignorance is bliss, and sometimes I really do thing that’s the case.

It’s been said that ignorance is bliss, and sometimes I really do thing that’s the case. I’ve watched my wife play WoW, and it’s really been sort of eye-opening. She just happily runs along, occasionally off a cliff, or sometimes directly into a pack of mobs that all but insta-kill her toon. And she really doesn’t care. Now, as she’s in Northrend, and repair bills are a little bit more, she’s somewhat more cautious, but still, much more carefree than I have ever played. She just has a good time, and if she dies, Oh well. She’s not terribly concerned if she’s doing the most effective DPS rotation she can, or anything like that, if the bad guys are dying fast enough that they don’t kill her and her pet, she’s quite happy. She doesn’t worry about all the little details, or anything like that, she just goes out and has fun. And it’s not as if she stays at stuff easily within her level. She quite often tries to solo things that are a bit higher than she probably should attempt, and honestly, has a pretty good success rate, or at least she usually won’t give up until she’s succeeded. For lack of a better way to say it, it’s often just refreshing and enjoyable to watch the semi-care-free way she plays, instead of the more analytical approach I’m much more used to playing with.

* I should mention that we currently only have one computer in my house, so I cannot actually help my wife run content with one of my toons, I can only sit and watch, and give advice.*

However, with her coming over into Northrend now, she’s finally into the level range where she can really begin doing group runs, as she’s no longer in the mostly abandoned areas of the old world, or Outlands. And all I have to say is “Wow!”

I generally consider myself a “casual” player. Yes, I raid, and I like to thing that in my days as a hunter, I was pretty darn good all things considered. Was I ever on the ‘cutting edge’? No, but I felt I learned to represent myself well. Now with my warrior, I’ve made sure to learn good specs, the right glyphs to use, and the proper abilities to use in a given situation. I was actually accused by the healer of a PuG run of CoT: Strath the other night of being “One of those tanks who knows what they’re doing.” While I appreciate the compliment, I also know I’m still very much in learning mode, and I had good DPS, and a good healer on the run, which made things alot easier. But back to my point. I consider myself more or less casual, perhaps ‘Intense Casual’ would be the appropriate term, and I guess I would consider my wife’s approach as a more ‘Relaxed Casual’. She doesn’t know most of the finer min-max points of playing her hunter, and she doesn’t particularly care to at this point, so long as she can kill things with reasonable effectiveness. But as she’s been adventuring in PuGland to do some of the earlier 5-mans in Northrend, all I can say is DAMN! I never realized how much I’ve really learned playing the game, or perhaps more properly, how little some other people apparently learn.

The other night I watched as my wife joined a group to do Utgarde Keep. She had done it once before, and enjoyed it, but still had a quest she needed to finish in it. Plus, it’s a good run to just get comfortable with the general group system in. When she got the call out of the LFG channel it was 2 mages, a druid and her hunter. All in the 71-73 range.

Enter the thoughts of my brain…

Brain: Ok, 2 mages, hunter, for DPS, druid should be resto, they just need a tank.

I say: Ok looks pretty good, once they get a tank…

Random person in party: Do you think we really need a tank?

Brain: Oh SHIT!!! This could be bad!

*my wife looks at me*

I say: Yeah, ya’ll need a tank for sure.

*she tells group, yes, we need a tank*

After a bit of apparently searching, whoever is leading the group announces they’ve found a tank, and a warrior joins the group.

Brain: Ok, not a bad run for a warrior, but with 2 mages, that’s gonna mean lots of AoEs, warrior’s gonna have to be on his toes.

The warrior pops out of the summoning portal, and I immediately notice he has 2 2-handed swords strapped across his back. Now if you’re reading this you probably know what that means… Back to the story.

Brain: Oh crap, I hope he’s dual-spec, Fury isn’t even all that great at low gear levels…

I say: Ok, he’s a warrior, but he’s in a DPS spec. Hopefully he’s dual-speced.

My wife: So is this gonna get ugly?

I say: It might

Through the portal they go, no one saying anything in party chat. Warrior is still packing two 2-handers… A couple buffs get tossed, and the warrior heads up the stairs for the first two mobs. He engages, and all hell breaks loose. The warrior (as a prot-warrior myself I won’t call him a tank) couldn’t hold threat on one mob, let alone both, but both mobs went down reasonably quick, simply due to DPS. If the first 2 were back, well the two packs in the hallway were a nightmare, mobs flying everywhere, and yst somehow, through focus-fire I think they managed to get all the mobs down with only one full wipe.

My wife: This is nuts!

Brain: Damn, this healer is really doing an amazing job! He’s managing to keep clothies alive despite them being attacked and not really pulled back off!

I say: This is only gonna get worse, that warrior can’t hold threat in a bucket, he’s probably in Berzerker Stance…

They managed to do 2 of the trash packs in Furnace of Hate before the healer, and one of the mages gave up, and left the party. Amazingly enough, the other mage and the warrior were actually considering trying to go on!

My wife: WTF? You can’t do this without a healer! *leaves group and hearths*

And the point of this whole story? Simply this, sometimes you don’t realize everything you’ve learned. I know that’s almost exactly what my wife said. Something to the extent of “I don’t know a whole lot about everything else in this game, but I do know that that just wasn’t going to work!” Part of me had been worried about my wife getting into groups and being treated poorly because she doesn’t know tons about rotations, etc, but having seen her run a few things, it seems that she’s in much more danger of getting stuck with people who simply have no understanding of the game whatsoever!

I had an interesting and mostly successful week raiding. All of my major targets (ToC, Ony, VoA) were defeated on both 10/25 man.

My guild only does 10 man raids, so I had to PuG all of the 25 man versions. As you all know, PuG raids are a crapshoot. I got really lucky with ToC and got in a very efficient group that rolled right through Anub. I wasn’t quite as lucky with Onyxia. It took me 4 different PuGs before I finally got in one that downed her. My VoA group also dissolved after defeating Koralon. At least I got all of the triumph raids down, as that was my main goal.

The only negative was that I knocked out these raids early in the week, so I had very little left to do on the weekend. I don’t really care about achievements and alts, I mainly like to raid. I spent the weekend trying to find a PuG 10/25 Trial of the Grand Crusader, but I didn’t have any luck. Do these run on any of your realms? Are they ever successful?

Hi Everyone…

I had to write Mason’s blog today because he is so cranky and out of sorts with everyone. I am sure it will pass, but you know how he hates change of any kind (unless it is a new food being added to his diet!), and Grandma and Grandpa’s new pug, Cecily, has really put him in a funk. I, however, am beside myself with excitement and cannot wait to meet my new sister friend. I know from Mom that she is a beautiful black pug who has had two litters of puppies and that she was shown a few times. She sounds so sweet and fun that I can hardly wait. I feel sad for her because she has always lived with lots of pugs and has never been the only dog until now. I think Mason and I need to welcome her into our family but Mason is being a brat about it. You know how he was (and still is sometimes) about my coming into his life. He is not a typical pug who likes lots of friends around, sharing his space and playing with him. He can be a real pill about that and just last week he went for me when I was licking Mom’s hand while we were sitting on the couch. He tolerates me up to a point and then he just can’t seem to control himself. I think he needs anger management.

I am really anxious to meet this new pug and I already think we are going to be great friends. Mason just mutters to himself about her. “She’s probably as stupid as Lizzie, She’s probably going to steal all of my food, She’s probably going to sniff my butt and then want to cuddle with me, She probably thinks she’s the boss of Grandma and Grandpa, She’s probably found all of my old hiding places in the woods.” He can go on for hours this way until I want to bite him! Well, I wouldn’t bite him but sometimes I really want to.

So, Cecily, welcome to our family! I will be your friend even if Mason doesn’t want to right away. Be patient and you’ll see…he’ll come around. His bark is much fiercer than his bite. See you Wednesday night!

Your loving sister/cousin/friend,

Lizzie

Puggie's Tongue Hangs Out Ever Since He Lost His Right Mandibular Canine Tooth I’ve notice

Puggie's Tongue Hangs Out Ever Since He Lost His Right Mandibular Canine Tooth

I’ve noticed many people are looking for dentistry information for their pets. There is one board certified dental society, the American Veterinary Dental College in the United States, and a second Academy of Veterinary Dentistry, which has less stringent membership requirements. Both are sources of official information about dentistry.

There is a practice which concerns Doc Truli greatly, so-called Non-Anesthesia Dentistry. This is an evil wrong perpetrated on pets, sometimes under the roof of an animal hospital. The American Veterinary Dental College has issued a position statement speaking out against this practice. I have included the text at the end of this post, in its entirety, or you can go to the Academy site and read it there.

Here’s how Doc Truli first learned of this “practice:”

“Doc, you have a call!”

“Hi, this is Ralph, I’m here with Jamie, the Yorkie. You need to prescribe antibiotics for her.”

“Pardon Me?” Who is this? “Who are you?”

“Oh! I’m Jamie’s groomer. I just scaled her teeth and it’s bleeding a little and a couple teeth fell out. She’s gonna need antibiotics.”

“Tell Jamie’s mom to bring her right over.”

Well, Jamie had massive periodontal disease with many, many loose teeth. Her mom always nodded her head and ignored me when I brought up the need for tooth surgery. She always said she didn’t have the money. It took 4 hours in surgery and over $1,000 to fix the mouth, otherwise the bleeding from the groomer extracting loose teeth would not stop.

Yikes!

I found out that there was a company out of California certifying veterinary technicians, groomers, or whomever paid for the class, to scale dogs teeth without sedation or anesthesia. This is the practice of veterinary medicine without a license! It is very, very dangerous, and the disease spread or overlooked can kill a dog. As this company morphs across the US from West to East, they are sued and shut down state by state. But not until countless animals are injured. All because people are afraid of anesthesia.

Now, in 2009, there is a new version of this travesty. Now, the technicians “certified” by this, and other bogus programs, come into veterinary hospitals. Instead of a real cleaning, exam, and full x-rays of the teeth, the vet actually prescribes the NAD, or non-anesthesia dentistry, often without examining the pet, or even meeting the pet parent.

Sheba Has Clean Teeth, But Raging Periodontal Disease Persists, all Because of Expensive Non-Anesthesia "Dentistry"

One of my medical clients likes the (excellent) groomer who happens to work at a nearby animal hospital. She had been dithering about dentistry, saying it cost too much. What did she do? She got talked into an $180 NAD! $180!!!! for cosmetic cleaning!!!! It doesn’t do anything to help her dog feel better, live longer, or be healthier. They talked her into it. Did not examine her pet, and a vet who has not been in active practice for at least 7 years was the name on the antibiotic prescription bottle. This nasty, money ripping little trick has not been found to be malpractice in a court of law, but it should be. It’s just a matter of time.

Talk with your veterinarian about anesthesia for your pet. Be sure your vet has full dental x-ray capability and uses it on every dentistry patient. Preferably, digital x-rays decrease the amount of time your pet is under anesthesia, but if your vet’s team is good with the regular old-fashioned x-rays, that’ll be fine, too, (regular old-fashioned x-rays can be better visual quality than digital, anyway). Be sure your vet team monitors anesthesia rigorously, especially if your pet is under 10 pounds.

Ask your vet about this anesthesia/dentistry check list:

-pulse oximeter

-carbon dioxide

-external heat, like bair hugger, circulating hot water blanket, heating pad, hot water bottles, or heated surgery table

-continuous core body temperature monitoring

-blood pressure monitoring

-protected airway with intubation

-intravenous fluids on every dentistry patient

-anesthetist assigned to monitor pet

-high speed drill

-dental x-ray capability and familiarity

-hospital with many tiny patients. The more experienced your vet is with condo pets and lap dogs, the better.

-if more than 2 hours under anesthesia, venous blood gas analysis capability

Pet Anesthesia Checklist (pdf)

Pet Anesthesia Checklist (.odt)

If they are missing some of these basics, ask if you may have a referral to a board-certified specialist in dentistry, or search for one on the AVDC website. I have not listed nearly all the “university” bells and whistles you could have used to monitor your pet, just the basics I use every day. I believe every veterinarian practicing dentistry should have no trouble checking off every item on the basic list.

The carbon dioxide monitor, the venous blood gases, and the dental x-rays may trip up about 80-90% of regular small animal hospitals. Very few have invested in this equipment. Some dentists for people do not have high-speed hand pieces for their drills, so be sure your veterinarian does.

It all comes down to the people working with your pet. Can you see the treatment area? Will they show you where your pet will be staying? Do they look you in the eye when they say they’ve never lost a patient under anesthesia? Do you feel cared for, and your pet is cared for? The people can mess up any fancy machine, and many miracles can be performed without fancy machines, although the hidden risks are higher.

The American Dental College Position Statement Against Non-Anesthesia Dentistry

In the United States and Canada, only licensed veterinarians can practice veterinary medicine. Veterinary medicine includes veterinary surgery, medicine and dentistry. Anyone providing dental services other than a licensed veterinarian, or a supervised and trained veterinary technician, is practicing veterinary medicine without a license and shall be subject to criminal charges.

This position statement addresses dental scaling procedures performed on pets without anesthesia, often by individuals untrained in veterinary dental techniques. Although the term Anesthesia-Free Dentistry has been used in this context, AVDC prefers to use the more accurate term Non-Professional Dental Scaling (NPDS) to describe this combination.

Owners of pets naturally are concerned when anesthesia is required for their pet. However, performing NPDS on an unanesthetized pet is inappropriate for the following reasons:

1. Dental tartar is firmly adhered to the surface of the teeth. Scaling to remove tartar is accomplished using ultrasonic and sonic power scalers, plus hand instruments that must have a sharp working edge to be used effectively. Even slight head movement by the patient could result in injury to the oral tissues of the patient, and the operator may be bitten when the patient reacts.

2. Professional dental scaling includes scaling the surfaces of the teeth both above and below the gingival margin (gum line), followed by dental polishing. The most critical part of a dental scaling procedure is scaling the tooth surfaces that are within the gingival pocket (the subgingival space between the gum and the root), where periodontal disease is active. Because the patient cooperates, dental scaling of human teeth performed by a professional trained in the procedures can be completed successfully without anesthesia. However, access to the subgingival area of every tooth is impossible in an unanesthetized canine or feline patient. Removal of dental tartar on the visible surfaces of the teeth has little effect on a pet’s health, and provides a false sense of accomplishment. The effect is purely cosmetic. (Doc Truli’s emphasis.)

3. Inhalation anesthesia using a cuffed endotracheal tube provides three important advantages… the cooperation of the patient with a procedure it does not understand, elimination of pain resulting from examination and treatment of affected dental tissues during the procedure, and protection of the airway and lungs from accidental aspiration.

4. A complete oral examination, which is an important part of a professional dental scaling procedure, is not possible in an unanesthetized patient. The surfaces of the teeth facing the tongue cannot be examined, and areas of disease and discomfort are likely to be missed.

"Thank you for my proper dental care, can I sleep on your pillow tonight?" (Who am I kidding, cats don't ask first...)

Safe use of an anesthetic or sedative in a dog or cat requires evaluation of the general health and size of the patient to determine the appropriate drug and dose, and continual monitoring of the patient. Veterinarians are trained in all of these procedures. Prescribing or administering anesthetic or sedative drugs by a non-veterinarian can be very dangerous, and is illegal. Although anesthesia will never be 100% risk-free, modern anesthetic and patient evaluation techniques used in veterinary hospitals minimize the risks, and millions of dental scaling procedures are safely performed each year in veterinary hospitals.

To minimize the need for professional dental scaling procedures and to maintain optimal oral health, the AVDC recommends daily dental home care from an early age. This should include brushing or use of other effective techniques to retard accumulation of dental plaque, such as dental diets and chew materials. This, combined with periodic examination of the patient by a veterinarian and with dental scaling under anesthesia when indicated, will optimize life-long oral health for dogs and cats.

For general information on performance of dental procedures on veterinary patients, please read the AVDC Position Statement on Veterinary Dental Healthcare Providers, which is available on the AVDC web site (www.AVDC.org). For information on effective oral hygiene products for dogs and cats, visit the Veterinary Oral Health Council web site (www.VOHC.org).

While we’re still not entirely sure, our recon leads us to believe that it’s a Peugeot 309 GTi saloon- a far less famous relative to the beloved 205 GTi. Dare we say it, we see shades of period Alfa in this car, sort of like a homely French cousin to Alfa’s Italian Milano.

So last week I went into H-Azjol-Nerub as a PUG just trying to complete the Daily Heroic quest for the day. Gotta get those two emblems of Triumph right? We had a Shammy healer, Myself (Prot Pally Tank), A Warlock, Hunter, and Feral Druid as DPS. I have been trying to get the Glory of the Hero acheivments for awhile now, and I always ask groups before hand if they want to try for em, and I suggest that you do this as well. Again – courtesy goes a long way in WoW. The only achievement that I didn’t have for H-AN was Watch Him Die. When I asked the group if they wanted to try – they were all enthusiastic.

I had never attempted this one before, and I hadn’t even looked up a strategy on how to accomplish the achievement. But I ran in full force w/ my Tier 9/Onyxia gear – confident that we could get this achievement. Let’s just say I was a little overconfident – not fully, but a little. Our first attempt was basically just trying to Tank n’ Spank him down w/ no real strategy. We wiped. The next few times we tried to take down the caster spiders without killing the watchers. We wiped. All said I believe we wiped about 8 or 9 times – on the first boss. On our last try we decided that we would make it just a straight DPS burn – throw everything we had at him. SUCCESS! And we wiped right after the boss went down. LOL.

——————————-

So here’s a few things to take away from that experience.

1. Most PUG’s won’t be patient enough to wipe time and time again just for an acheivement. Try and work them in accordingly and realize that most people in Heroics are only there for the badges and gear. After this experience I offered 50 gold to each of my group members to help w/ their repair costs.

2. Don’t be afraid to try someone else’s strategy – Just because something has worked one way for you before doesn’t mean that is the only way it will work. I had to be willing to try out other strategies for this achievement, because the one I tried first was a complete disaster.

3. Don’t get so fixated on an achievement that your run becomes a failure. This is doubly true if you are already saved to an instance. I was extremely lucky that everyone in my group was well geared and wanted this achievement. This will not always be the case.

4. Remember to have fun – just because you are with a group of people that you’ve never played with before doesn’t mean you can’t have fun. Trying for this acheivement was a blast! I hadn’t had that much fun wiping in quite awhile.

Have a good day!
