Rename the ~/.asoundrc and/or /etc/asound.conf files to something else.

There you go Simple isn’t? To think I uninstalled the WHOLE PulseAudio suite so many times just to make pSX work… tsk… : /

If the above doesn’t work, try this.

I just updated my main box to Karmic this past week. This is a 32 bit box that was first installed

I just updated my main box to Karmic this past week. This is a 32 bit box that was first installed with Hardy.

Overall it looks like they improved a bunch of stuff. I noticed a lot of stupid annoyances with Gnome/Nautilus are gone now, and the new Pulseaudio stuff looks good.

I use this box as my main PC as well as MythTV frontend/backend with one other PC on the network as a frontend only. My capture card is the Hauppauge PVR-250. I run a heavily patched version of 0.21-fixes from SVN built to my needs. For Karmic I had to update it to r20877 due to some weirdness with glibc 2.10+, anyway that was the easy part…

After compiling and attempting to run it, I wasn’t getting any audio, and the video was choppy. My first thought was to blame pulseaudio due to the debug messages I was getting and also the fact that if I changed my “profile” in the new gnome-volume-control panel it would make audio come and go, but this fact actually turned out to be a semi red herring.

After a little investigating I discovered to my surprise that grabbing video directly from the PVR-250 via “cat /dev/video0 > output.mpg” was also producing the same screwed up video/audio as Myth live TV. Then I checked the behavior of my frontend only machine, same problem there… Strange, what could be causing this? IVTV it must be. Jaunty had IVTV module v1.4.0, Karmic has v1.4.1 which appears to be non-stable at the present time.

So I wanted to try and compile a 1.4.0 module for Karmic but couldn’t find the source on the IVTV page, so I gave up on that. Anyway long story short, I ended up solving these very strange problems by doing the following:

1) I found out that for some very strange reason, the ivtv module needs to be re-loaded AFTER the mythbackend is started! WTF! and why does this fix the problem? Any feedback on this would be appreciated. Does it have something to do with this weird new Karmic thing where they start all the init programs in strange order to improve the boot speed?

2) Declare EXPERIMENTALLY_ALLOW_PULSE_AUDIO=1 in my .profile.

All is well again. Now to go enjoy Karmic.

00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801JI (ICH10 Family) HD Audio Controller

snd_page_alloc          8252  2 snd_hda_intel,snd_pcm

通过这些模块驱动其实还是比较底层的操作（每个模块有啥用可以看 alsa-base 里面的 /usr/share/doc/alsa-base/driver/ALSA-Configuration.txt.gz，比如 snd_rawmidi 是用来处理 OSS 中的 midi 的），应用程序往往需要一个更加方便的接口。

$ ldd /usr/bin/mp3blaster
	linux-gate.so.1 =>  (0xb7f43000)
	libsidplay.so.1 => /usr/lib/libsidplay.so.1 (0xb7ede000)
	libvorbisfile.so.3 => /usr/lib/libvorbisfile.so.3 (0xb7ed6000)
	libvorbis.so.0 => /usr/lib/libvorbis.so.0 (0xb7eac000)
	libncurses.so.5 => /lib/libncurses.so.5 (0xb7e74000)
	libpthread.so.0 => /lib/i686/cmov/libpthread.so.0 (0xb7e5b000)
	libstdc++.so.6 => /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6 (0xb7d69000)
	libm.so.6 => /lib/i686/cmov/libm.so.6 (0xb7d43000)
	libgcc_s.so.1 => /lib/libgcc_s.so.1 (0xb7d26000)
	libc.so.6 => /lib/i686/cmov/libc.so.6 (0xb7be1000)
	libogg.so.0 => /usr/lib/libogg.so.0 (0xb7bdb000)
	libdl.so.2 => /lib/i686/cmov/libdl.so.2 (0xb7bd7000)
	/lib/ld-linux.so.2 (0xb7f44000)

$ ldd /usr/games/wesnoth
...
	libasound.so.2 => /usr/lib/libasound.so.2 (0xb7547000)
...

pcm.pulse {
    type pulse
}

ctl.pulse {
    type pulse
}

pcm.!default {
    type pulse
}

ctl.!default {
    type pulse
}

pcm.default {
  type plug
  slave.pcm "hw:0"
}

ctl.default {
  type hw
  card 0
}

After I upgraded to Ubuntu 9.10, I experienced some trouble with playing sound using Spotify under Wine. The sound stuttered and even disappeared. Spotify reported that it had trouble with the soundcard.

After some searching, I found a solution that worked, for me at least…

* Change Wine config to use Alsa driver.

* Uninstall pulseaudio :

#sudo apt-get remove pulseaudio

If pulseaudio is still running, kill it off – or restart your machine. This corrected my trouble with playing music on my machine – hope it might help you as well…

[Edit] It might be useful to know that the pulseaudio volume control toolbar-applet will disappear when doing this. I’ve installed the ALSA mixer instead and that works okay for me.

– xorg

No major niggles or problems after upgrading to 9.10 – in fact I’m running out of superlatives to describe Karmic. My wife has long since given up listening to me extol some new-found virtue of this distribution. As I launched into an enthusiastic lecture on the new-look UI with smaller icons and beautifully anti-aliased fonts, the pitying look of incomprehension that crept unbidden across her face spoke volumes.

Anyway, one thing that did stop working for me after the upgrade was Skype. This isn’t generally a problem, I don’t use Skype all that much, but this week I needed to use it for an important video call at work. Whilst Skype loaded fine, none of the sound devices seemed to work, and the test call was quieter than my wife’s reaction to Karmic’s faster shutdown speed. I had “pulse” listed as my default audio device, which seemed to be correct, but nothing was happening. I also tried “Intel hw:0,1″ and “Intel hw:0,3″, but still no joy.

Although I was using the latest version, I decided to uninstall Skype using the Synaptic Package Manager. I marked each Skype package for Complete Removal, which would remove any configuration files and user data.

I then reinstalled Skype from this link (or if you have Ubuntu 64bit, then this link). Just download the package, and then open it for installation. Things were better from the outset, because at least this time Skype made a noise on loading. When I checked the options, I could see that the sound devices were now referred to differently “PulseAudio server (local)” rather than the multitude of options I had previously.

I found it best to uncheck the box that says Allow Skype to automatically adjust my mixer levels, and then to set the microphone volume through the System -> Preferences -> Sound applet. If I allowed Skype to adjust the sound automatically, then I could hear people perfectly, but they couldn’t hear me – it practically turned off my microphone.

Then, all that was left to do was to add Skype to start automatically, which is easy:

Go to Options in Skype and choose General

Check the Start Skype minimised in the system tray box

Go to the System -> Preferences -> Startup Applications applet

Click Add and enter the following details:

Name: Skype

Command: skype

Click Add and then Close. Now Skype will start automatically when you reboot.

It seems that Ubuntu 9.10 is more dependent on PulseAudio than previous releases, and I’ve read a lot of blogs indicating that this may not be a good thing. I’m going to do more research before I give an opinion, but suffice to say that the above procedure fixed my Skype audio problem.

gksudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list

Längst ner lägger man till följande rader.

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/flimm/ppa/ubuntu jaunty main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/flimm/ppa/ubuntu jaunty main

Uppdatera paketlistorna.

sudo apt-get update

Installera Earcandy

sudo apt-get install earcandy

# pacman -S pulseaudio

Adicionalmente, podemos instalar los siguientes componentes “opcionales”

# pacman -S padevchooser paman paprefs pavucontrol pavumeter

# ln -sf /usr/bin/esdcompat /usr/bin/esd

load-module module-esound-protocol-unix socket=/tmp/.esd/socket

DAEMONS=(syslog-ng !network netfs crond fam hal avahi-daemon pulseaudio)

pcm.!default {
type pulse
}
ctl.!default {
type pulse
}

$ gconftool-2 -t string –set /system/gstreamer/0.10/default/audiosink pulsesink
$ gconftool-2 -t string –set /system/gstreamer/0.10/default/audiosrc pulsesrc

I was using xmms as the music player in my ubuntu 8.04 box. Recently I heard about a plugin in audacious using which we make the now running song as the pidgin user status/comment. So I switched to it. But when I tried to play any audio files with it, it doesn’t play.

After running audacious in terminal, I got these messages.

$ audacious
amidi-plug(amidi-plug.c:amidiplug_init:97): init, read configuration
amidi-plug(i_backend.c:i_backend_load:107): loading backend '/usr/lib/audacious/Input/amidi-plug/ap-alsa.so'
amidi-plug(i_backend.c:i_backend_load:145): backend /usr/lib/audacious/Input/amidi-plug/ap-alsa.so (name 'alsa') successfully loaded

** (audacious:19958): WARNING **: Failed to connect to server: Connection refused

** (audacious:19958): WARNING **: Failed to connect to server: Connection refused

** (audacious:19958): WARNING **: Failed to connect to server: Connection refused
MADPlug-Message: failed to open audio output: XMMS reverse compatibility output plugin

** (audacious:19958): WARNING **: Failed to connect to server: Connection refused
MADPlug-Message: failed to open audio output: XMMS reverse compatibility output plugin

After seeing the XMMS, in the output, I thought it is due to the presence of the old XMMS in the system. So i uninstalled it. Still the problem persists…..

I googled the complaint and at last I understood the problem is due to the missing of pulseaudio. Audacious generally uses pulseaudio as the default audio device.

It is very simple to cover this problem.

Open audacious.

Press Ctrl+p to open the preference window.

Move to the audio tab.

Change the Current Output plugin from PulseAudio Output Plugin to ALSA Output Plugin.

Close the preference window.

Now onwards audacious will play without any errors.
