While the Northern Hemisphere tilts away from the warming light of the sun, hot punch recipes are being dusted off. Some provide warmth, others exist solely to bring a tint of colour to the milky white skin of Englishmen.

Rejoice then, that you live in Sydney, where access to sun, surf, parks and beaches are plentiful and open to all.

As you head to any of these places, to meet in large groups or small, the default choice for refreshment is a six pack of coldies or a bottle of wine. I’d ask you to consider for a moment stepping outside of that norm and heading, replete, with a fine jar of tippling punch on your next park sojourn.

Punch was invented back when alcohol was so rough, punters only wanted to mask the flavour enough to get it down and start the glorious journey to intoxication, these days, punches in the summer or the winter showcase flavours of booze,  fruit and herbacious additives. Experimentation is the key here, perfect punch is a very fluid concept, go with what’s fresh and match the flavours as best you can.

Punches are best described in ratios, as everyone will have a different sized jar, bowl or bathtub, depending on the size of one’s frivolity, and frankly your ambition.

My Summer Punch

Fill a preserving jar with ice and slide slices of lemons, limes and oranges down the side with a barspoon. Add 2 parts Tanqueray Gin, 1 part Lillet Blanc, 1 part pomegranate juice, 1 part cloudy apple juice, 1/2 part fresh squeezed lemon juice. Garnish with mint, think bush not sprig.

The walk or drive to the destination should provide sufficient mixing.

After another tough loss to UConn, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish have taken another hit, this one coming outside the watchful eyes of “Touchdown Jesus.” On Saturday night, Senior day at Notre Dame, star quarterback Jimmy Clausen went out to dinner with his family and “lady friend,” after leaving the bar, Clausen was involved in an “altercation” in which he was punched in the face.

Clausen suffered at least one black eye as a result of the punch, according to a source. South Bend police say that no reports were filed in this incident over the weekend.

Talk about embarrassing. With your family and your girl-friend and you are sucker punched by a crazed drunken fan (I assume).

The injury is not expected to keep Clausen from playing this weekend against Stanford. Clausen is having his best year with the Irish: 3,382 yard, 23 TDs, 4 INTs, and a passer rating of 156.45 – - now if only his team could win he could be a Heisman candidate.

Here’s Clausen’s reaction after the game – little did he know he was on his way to a black eye. It always pains me to see the Irish sing after a heartbreaking loss like this.

On Friday there were Dinosaurs in Cleveland!

No not that—thankfully. Wow that show was so damn bad. God I hated that baby. It made me want to build a time machine or (buy a DeLorean) so I could go back in time and punch baby Dinosaurs in the face. Anydooozle….Back to the Dinosaurs at the Grog Shop okay technically it was Dinosaur Jr. You know these guys:

A slightly older version, but they sort of prove the fine wine theory. That’s right in my vague, way off the beaten path way I’m saying that Friday the missus and I went to the Dinosaur Jr. show. It had been a long time coming—In more ways than one. Dinosaur Jr. was one of my fav bands as a ute (OH snap a My Cousin Vinny reference!), and a clear inspiration to Kurt and Nirvana. I of course like too many bands never got to see them. Then they disbanded in 97. What is this a history lesson in Dinosaur Jr.? Screw that go do your own leg work! It’s called Google people! We bought the tickets for the show like 6 years ago (more like June or so) but it seemed to take forever to arrive. So the big night approaches and how do we prepare for it? Well none other than the Rock mantra of sex and drugs! Yeah that’s right the wife and I got home from work and took a nap! Now that’s a swerve! Could I use anymore exclamation points? We slept for about two hours and then headed over to the show. The place was packed with a unique mixture of cool 40 year olds, teens and the douche kind of 30-40 year olds (The “I was at their first show man” types.) We survived the wannabe Dresden Dolls band that opened for them—who were a lot better (read as not as sucky) than their MySpace page led us to believe. As the band took the stage what happened? A herd of mutant giraffes swooped in front of us. Fuckers. I mean we are smurfs here and from where they were there was no real difference of sliding in front of us on the d-low. I’m pretty sure they were just 12 year olds on steroids! Here are the results of part of the show being behind these urban Giraffes. You know the hold the camera high over ya head and wave it like you just don’t care and snap away?

Then we were invited in front of some cool people (and fellow smurf people) Side note: God damn you Microsoft Word acknowledge Smurf is a fucking word!

Anydiddle. This is when the shit hit the fan and got fun. Nearing the end of the 2 hour show the moshing began. Nothing is lamer than old farts and young idiots slamming into each other. So as this got out of control (when is it in control) my wife decided to police it. You know my tiny barely 5’2 wife? Then the smurfettes that were alongside of us were inspired by her spunk and decided to chip in. First they just pushed the idiots away but this of course made the idiots think they were playing along. Enter the kidney punching. There really is nothing as hilarious as three short girls punching giants in the kidneys, backs, and necks. It was sort of hot too.

A TEEN who murdered a dad-of-two in an unprovoked attack has been jailed for life.

Thomas Main, 18, kicked and stamped Michael Wood to death in Aberdeen in June this year.

Mr Wood’s face was “smashed” during the attack and he died from his injuries.

Today (Monday) at the High Court in Livingston, thug Main was jailed for life after he previously admitted killing him.

Judge Lord Bracadale said the murder was “unprovoked” and ruled that Main must serve a minimum of 13 years before he can be considered for parole.

Defending, Mark Stewart QC, said Main had left school at an early age and had “drifted” into a life of drink and drugs.

He said: “It was the combination of his taking drink and drugs on the date in question which led to the incident which resulted in the attack and death of Mr Wood.

“There’s nothing which I can say which in any way explains or justifies the assault on Mr Wood – the apology I’m instructed to make will mean little to those affected by Mr Wood’s death.

“There is some understanding of the extremely serious nature of what occurred that day.

“There is some insight reported in the report in to the full extent of what he was responsible for and there is some indication that he understands the consequences of his actions.”

Lord Bracadale said to that the unprovoked attacked on Mr Wood involved Main “forcing” his victim down a flight of stairs and stamping on his head whilst he was unconscious, resulting in his whole face being “smashed in”.

He added: “This was a very serious assault which went on for some time.

“You have previous convictions of assault – one of which involved a weapon – and you were under the influence of drugs and alcohol.

“These are incriminating facts which will increase the length of imprisonment.

“I do take into account you age, that there was no weapon used and it was not pre-meditated.”

Relatives of Mr Wood present in the court room were elated and whispered shouts of joy when Main was handed down his sentence.

Main, was aged just 17 when he kicked 43-year-old Michael Wood “like a ball” so hard it left the distinctive pattern of his shoes imprinted on him during the attack in Balnagask Terrace late on Tuesday 9 June.

Headlock

The court heard previously that dad of two Mr Wood had split from his wife, suffered from an alcohol problem and had been on a binge with friends.

Main, who had five previous convictions for serious violence, had in turn been drinking vodka and Jack Daniels and was described as being “hyper” before he began punching Mr Wood in the face.

In evidence, the court heard previously how Main grabbed the older man in a headlock and during the struggle they both fell down stairs.

Main fell on top of the unconscious Mr Wood, breaking his fall.

But almost as soon as the teenage thug got to his feet again,he started kicking and stamping on Mr Wood’s head.

As he stamped on Mr Wood’s head one witness heard what he described as a ‘big snap’ – but still the attack continued.

Mr Wood was rushed to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary after but he died from his injuries.

A Post Mortem examination later revealed his entire face had been “fragmented” with only his jaw bone still intact.

Main initially denied any involvement.

However he later admitted punching Mr Wood and kicking him “like kicking a ball” although claimed he had not meant to kill him.

Police earlier described the assault as a “cowardly and brutal attack on a vulnerable and defenceless man”

“We apologize to all our amazing Swedish fans, and we hope to be back next year to make it up to you. He is just now starting to feel better, so we plan on traveling to Copenhagen and playing tomorrow night at The Rock.

“SHADOWS FALL will perform as scheduled.”

I think about writing a book everyday. But I always run into the problem of what to write about. More importantly, I wonder if anyone will care. Yeah, it’s a problem I should get over; certainly one my good friend Alan would like me to get over because HE cares enough to read me. He’s a sweetheart and I should read his blog more. Anyway…one day—a year ago on October 22, 2008— I was bored at work and decided to name the chapters of this imaginary future book that would chronicle my upbringing and attempt to make reason of why I am the way I am (i.e. having the attitude of ‘Why bother? No one will care.’) The following chapters spilled from my brain rather quickly:

The interesting thing about this, apart from it having a shitload of chapters, is that I could pick up where I left off a year ago and support these chapters with content that resides in the front of my mind. That is, if I had to sit down again today, a year later, and write chapter titles, I would have written these exact ones except chapter 7 – Fish Market Blues and chapter 15 – Freaks, white trash and happiness. I have no idea what I meant to say in those and nothing comes to me upon seeing them.

But what this means to me is if these things are still fresh in my mind a year later, maybe they have some validity. Maybe I should write about these things because they played an important role in how I turned out so far. And maybe, just maybe SOMEONE (other than Alan) would care to read them in a book authored by Rachel Butera.

Even though I think I should change my name. Rachel Butera is NOT a writer’s name. It’s not a famous name. I tried to tell my friend Sam this, but he fights me on everything. He said it’s a good name, but that’s only because he knows me already. It’s not memorable. If you saw it on a book cover, it wouldn’t stick in your mind.

Now there’s Rachel McAdams, but eh. Even porn stars avoid the name. Girls who get fucked on camera for a living understand that Rachel isn’t a good name for show biz. I think there’s one Rachel in porn and she’s not really famous. She’s in like niche punk-porn.

It’s not a friendly name. It’s not a good name for fame or caring. You don’t care about a Rachel. You want to punch a Rachel in the face. You want tell a snotty, stuck up Rachel to fuck off. You want to ignore a dumpy, nerdy Rachel. You want to throw Rachel an anger-fuck and give her your wrong number.

There is nothing better than the warming flavour of Ginger, especially on a dark windy crisp autumn evening. The ginger tones and the bitter lemon taste complement each other perfectly, and a good non-alcoholic punch, or add a sneaky drop of your favourite spirit or use in a cocktail (^-^)

What You Need:

1 unwaxed lemon roughly sliced and zest, 30g finely chopped ginger, 250g light brown sugar, 950ml Water

Add all the ingredients to a large saucepan, not all the water keep 250ml to one side. Boil up the ingredients whist continually  stirring to dissolve the sugar. Once boiling turn down to a simmering heat for 5 minutes. Take off the heat and  leave covered over night. The next day strain the mixture and bottle or pour into a jug, chill and then serve.

I have seen some information online recently as it relates to a women’s soccer game. A player from New Mexico – the Lobos – has been suspended for dirty play. I have watched the video, various different ones and was she a bit rough? Yep. Did she step over the line? Yep. But why aren’t the BYU players also being discussed as being rough or stepping over the line?

Here’s the video, you tell me if she was provoked?

For the punch in the back, she was elbowed in the gut first.
For the hair pull take down, the BYU player was pulling her shorts up.
She was obviously provoked in these situations. The only one would have to be the one that she got the yellow card for and that was kicking the ball and it inadvertently hit a downed BYU player in the face. But it wasn’t Ms. Lambert that knocked down that player it was another Lobo.

The shower was very successful!!  We all had a great time!!  Please enjoy these pictures and recipes!

Me, Kelly and my Mom!

While everyone arrived, we served a couple appetizers, “jungle punch” and pink champagne with blueberries!  Here is the recipe for our jungle punch that was delicious!!

Green Jungle Punch
2 liters ginger ale
1 large container frozen lemonade
1 large container pineapple juice (chilled)
1 quart lime sherbet

Stir liquids together. Add sherbet and stir gently. The lime sherbet
melts and makes a milky green punch with foam on top.  Don’t forget to add your fruit and ice ring that we made in the previous post!

Here is the first guessing game we played while everyone mingled during appetizers.  Guess how many m & m’s are in the bottle.  The person closest won a prize.  This is a nice game to do while people are first coming in and can write their guess at their own leisure.

We played a memory game next.  We loaded a tray with a bunch of baby items and covered it with a sheet.  Everyone got a piece of paper and a pen.  We took the sheet of the tray for about 1 minute and then covered it again.  Everyone had to write down all the items they remembered on the tray.  The person who got the most won a prize!

Here is Kelly showing off her beautiful belly (in a adorable dress from ‘pea in the pod’) in our next game!  Everyone got a ball of yarn and had to cut a piece they thought perfectly measured her belly.  Here is a picture of everyone measuring!

Lunch!  Here are some pics of what we ate!

We served three kinds of sandwiches.  From top to bottom we made: cucumber, watercress on wheat, turkey and cranberry on potato bread, chicken salad on sourdough and cheese puffs.  Finger sandwiches are great for luncheons!  Everyone loves them and you don’t need utensils!

I made a caprese inspired salad.  I just used mixed greens, chopped basil, cherry tomatoes and small mozzarella balls!  I dressed it in a homemade balsamic dressing, but you can make your own or use store bought.

Here is a picture of the orzo salad, chicken curry salad and zucchini rolls.

Orzo Salad

1 lb. orzo (pasta shaped like rice)

2 small jars of marinated artichokes, drained

1 jar of marinated sun dried tomatoes, drained and rinsed

2 big handfuls of pignoli (pine) nuts, toasted

A large handful of chopped basil

1 package of feta cheese

Salt and pepper

Champagne vinegar (if you can’t find this, you can use white wine vinegar)

Olive oil

Cook the orzo according to the box instructions.  Drain and rinse the pasta in cold water to cool the pasta quickly.  Pour into a big bowl and add all the ingredients but the cheese.  Dress with the oil, vinegar, salt and pepper.  Toss together and add the cheese and gently stir.

This is such a great recipe!!  Everyone will love it!!

After lunch, we did a little art project!  It was so fun!!!  We painted onesies for the baby!  Here are the tools needed:

Paper towels, heat n’ bond, puff paint, scissors, cute fabric characters, onesies (we got a variety of sizes to keep the growing baby outfitted), and a piece of cardboard.

You are going to iron on the heat n’ bond to the fabric character then with the scissors cut it out.  Then iron on the character to the onesie.  Place the cardboard in the onsie. (so it doesn’t bleed through!)  And paint around the character and the rest of the onsie.

Here’s me painting my onsie for the baby!  And here are all the onesies done!:

Sooooo cute!!!!  And now the baby will have all sorts of fabulous clothes to wear!!

We finished the day with some yummy desserts and opened gifts!!  (my favorite part of the day!)

I made some mini cupcakes in red velvet and carrot cake!  A triple chocolate bundt cake! : )  And those are free form cheesecake parfaits with fresh fruit!  So yummy!!!  Here is the recipe:

Cheesecake Parfaits

What you’ll need:

8 oz. Cream Cheese, at room temperature

A pinch of salt (kosher preferred)

1 Tbsp. Almond Liqueur (amaretto)

1 Tsp. Vanilla Extract

2 Eggs, room temperature

1/2 cup Sugar

1 package (17 1/2 oz.) Marscapone Cheese (Italian cream cheese), at room temperature

What you’ll do:

In an electric mixer with the paddle attachment, (or a bowl with hand mixer) beat the cream cheese until smooth. Add a pinch of salt.  While the mixer is running, gradually pour in the vanilla and almond liqueur. Crack in the eggs in 1 at a time.  Add the sugar and then the mascarpone and beat until smooth.

Pour the mixture to a large heatproof (glass or metal) bowl. Set the bowl over saucepan partially filled with barely simmering water, but do not let the water touch the bottom of the bowl. (you are making a double boiler) Cook until the mixture reaches 170 degrees F on a candy thermometer.  (you are killing the egg bacteria at 170 degrees)  It takes about 15 to 20 minutes.  Stir often.  (cause you don’t want lumps to form)  When the mix reaches 170 degrees F, remove the bowl and place on the counter to cool. (careful of the steam when removing!)  Allow the mix to cool for about 20 minutes.  Refrigerate a 2 hours or overnight.

Place the diced fruit in a bowl or wine glasses. (if you want to be fancy!)  Dollop a nice amount of cheesecake mix on top and sprinkle with mini chocolate chips : )  Serve and Enjoy!!  You are going to love this!

13 November 2009 A 43-year-old man has been hauled to court for allegedly sexually abusing a teenaged boy.

Rahim Basron, who is now in remand, has claimed trial to four charges in all. It is believed he sexually abused a 13-year-old student on two different occasions in 2006.

Rahim first met the boy in 2005 near his home in the western part of Singapore.

When cross-examined by the Deputy Public Prosecutor Ramu Miyapan, the slim, bespectacled boy said that Rahim called out to him and he responded by going forward forward.

The boy, now 16 years old, added that Rahim then proceeded to advice him not to smoke or mix with bad company. Rahim continued to befriend him and even met up with the boy’s parents in 2006.

During school holidays later, the boy started to accompany Rahim to sell food at different places in Singapore.

The boy told Justice Tay Yong Kwang that Rahim punched him in the stomach on more than two occasions, after he made mistakes when counting their takings for the day. So the boy lived in fear of Rahim as he did not want to be hit again.

It is believed the boy was sexually assaulted for the first time in November 2006 after he brought Rahim to his home when his family members were out. Rahim reportedly asked if he knew a Muslim cleansing ritual known as “mandi hadas”. He then allegedly told the boy to undress and join him in the bathroom.

Rahim then allegedly proceeded to sexually abuse him. It is believed the boy was sexually assaulted again in the same flat in December 2006.

The alleged crimes came to light when a policeman and a cleric from a mosque came to the boy’s home in 2008 to question him about Rahim’s actions.

Rahim, who is not represented by a lawyer, denied punching and sexually abusing the boy. Instead, he said the boy tried to frame him due to a grudge, after he turned down a request from the boy and his mother to lend them money.

The trial continues. If convicted, Rahim could be jailed for more than ten years and receive up to 24 strokes of the cane.
