Some might remember a time when Punggol Point lay at the end of a somewhat long and winding road – the old Punggol Road that meandered through a countryside that we have since lost. The road, which started at its junction with Upper Serangoon Road where the St. Francis Xavier Minor Seminary served as a landmark, took one past some five miles of the many tracks of Punggol, villages and farms with attap and zinc roofed houses and a lot of which I don’t quite remember. What I did remember was the unmistakeable pong that hung in the air – one that was fed by the numerous poultry and pig farms that had thrived in the area, and perhaps the evening’s chorus of squeals – that of pigs calling for their dinner.

The beach at Punggol Point - now cleaned up and freed of the boatels and boats that added colour to the landscape.

The end of the road offered a lot to those who did brave the journey. There was first and foremost the cluster of seafood restaurants that drew many with the reward of reputedly some of the best and freshest seafood dishes on the menu in which service always seemed to begin with the customary basin in which one found the table’s utensils and teacups, cleansed in the water that the basin held. There was also the weekend crowd that came: those armed with rods to fish at the jetty, or board a boat to attempt to reel in a bigger catch offshore – which invariably included a lot of Ikan Sembilang; and those who sought to satisfy a need for speed planing over the water on waterskis – either off Punggol Point or at nearby Coney Island. For some, Punggol Point also offered a quiet escape from the fast moving concrete world that was taking over much of the rest of Singapore – the fishing village it hosted by the sea adding to the rustic charm that the area already held.

Punggol Point before the big change that took place at the end of the 1980s and in the early 1990s (source: http://picas.nhb.gov.sg).

The last I saw of that Punggol Point and of Punggol Road was at a time when I was still in my youth, and with the distractions of a decade when I made the transition from being a curious child to adulthood, a decade that probably saw the most significant change in Singapore’s rural landscape – the 1980s, the clearing of Punggol as it was at the end of the 1980s seemed to have passed me by. Some business at Punggol Point like the seafood restaurants and boatels did have an extended lease of life, but they too went in the early 1990s, and Punggol, as with much of Singapore, was to be changed forever.

Looking west today towards what was the area close to the mouth of Sungei Punggol.

I was to discover how much has changed as I made my way over the weekend for the first time in over two decades to Punggol Point for the official opening of Punggol Point Walk and Punggol Point Park. The journey was there of course now made a lot easier by the Tampines Expressway (TPE) which runs below an elevated stretch of Punggol Road, no longer was there a need to make one’s way over Upper Serangoon Road to the start of that long and narrow Punggol Road. There wasn’t much that I had expected to see that would have reminded me of the old Punggol Road and Punggol Point, as I tirelessly drove along what is now a wide dual carriageway, flanked not by attap and zince roofed houses and greenery, but by the new HDB estate that has risen out of the ashes of the old Punggol. A surprise awaited at the last stretch of the road – the dual carriageway merged, after a wide junction into a stretch on which for a moment, gave me a feeling that I was on my way to that old Punggol Point. Flanked by a line of trees which provided cover to the short but winding stretch of road, it did look as if I was heading down the old Punggol Road – which this stretch was a part of, kept almost as it might have been as a heritage road. Althought the ‘Tracks’ of Punggol Road were gone, there is still a couple of familar streets – one Ponggol Seventeenth Avenue brings with it memories I have of campfires and walks by a narrow beach that led to the mouth of Sungei Punggol. It is after the next familiar name, Ponggol Twenty-Fourth Avenue, that the realisation sinks in that it is not to that old Punggol Point that I was heading to, as the break in the cover of trees reveals the brand new world which will attempt to retain some of that rustic charm that the old Punggol Point had been known for.

The tree lined stretch of road that leads to the end - reminiscent of the Punggol Road of the days gone by.

Past the Outward Bound School, I soon arrived at the end of the road. Desperate to see what Punggol Point has become, I quickly make my way up a viewing deck, which I was to find out later, shaped like a ship. The viewing deck offered a wonderful panorama of the Straits of Johor and Pasir Gudang beyond the jetty which it overlooked, where stakes used to moor boats and the boats tied to them would have once greeted the eye. On both sides, a beach that looked a lot cleaner than the one I remembered ran up and down the coastline, cleared of the boatels and the stilted houses of a Malay kampung that once stood close to the water’s edge. The beach, and perhaps the jetty are perhaps what can connect us with the past, and a reminder in the form of a National Heritage Board sign of an unfortunate and tragic episode in our history that took place on the beach – the Sook Ching Massacre.

The jetty today.

The lookout that I stepped on to, is part of what is a 1.2 km promenade and park, the Punggol Point Walk and Punggol Point Park, which is one of three thematic zones of the $16.7 million 4.9 km long Punggol Promenade project undertaken by the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) that was officially opened by Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean on 20 Nov 2011. This is a component of its Parks and Waterbodies and Identities Plans which aims to open up and introduce new recreational activities and amenities to coastal areas, and also preserve the laid-back and village-like appeal that the areas are known for. Punggol Promenade will link up two recreational clusters at Punggol Point and Punggol East, as well as link to the park connectors along Punggol Reservoir and Serangoon Reservoir. This will form a continuous 17 km loop around the north-eastern part of Singapore. The two other thematic zones are the 1.3 km Riverside Walk which anchors a growing recreational cluster at Punggol East which opened in March this year and a 2.5 km Nature Walk, scheduled to be completed next year.

Punggol Point Walk and Punggol Point Walk was officially opened by Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean on 20 Nov 2011.

The Punggol Point Park offers a lot more besides the viewing deck and the beach, there are also the calm of Lily Ponds, a 81 metre by 10 metre Event Plaza and a Children’s Playground to draw families to enjoy the newly opened park. There is certainly more to look forward to – a reserve site has been released by the URA for sale by tender for food and beverage development – which will perhaps see the return of seafood to the area, and a horse-riding school will also soon open. The Promenade at Punggol Point Walk will feature both a 3 metre wide cycling track for use by cyclists and roller skaters and a parallel 3 metre wide footpath constructed of simulated timber. A sustainable approach is in fact adopted in the selection of materials for use in the project that also involves the use of permeable Tegula pavers on hard scaped area which eliminate the need for drainage systems, the use of bio-swales to filter surface run-offs and the use of Laterite earth.

The Lily Pond.

The Children's Playground. © Urban Redevelopment Authority.
I must say that although I didn’t really find much of the old Punggol Point that I might have hoped for, I am grateful to have taken the opportunity to visit the area. The drive through the heritage road did help trigger a few memories that I have stored away, as did my walk around the new park. While much of the old world rustic charm has inevitably been lost, there is still some of that charm that is left to draw vistors to the area and to also draw me back not just for the chance to escape from the urban world, but also for the opportunity it offers me to rediscover and reconnect with a part of Singapore I have might have almost forgotten about.

It is already afternoon by the time I finish writing this post. This morning, it was mostly a cloudy sunrise. Left home at about 6.45am and cycled through Punggol Waterway, past Punggol Marina Country Club, Punggol Beach, Punggol Promenade Nature Walk, through Lorong Halus Wetland and all the way to Pasir Ris Beach Park and back. Quite an intense workout but fun. Weather is great. Most of the heavy clouds have cleared. Sunny day with blue sky at the point of writing this.

A few things to note. There is a signboard at the Punggol PCN crossing heading to Punggol Marina Country Club – a signal crossing is estimated to be completed around January 2012. By that I assume there will be a traffic light there. Good but I wish it could have been done faster. Lots of traffic already at this crossing and heavy vehicles are constantly passing by.

Another thing to note – there are barricades at the Nature Walk section of Punggol Promenade. The barrier near Punggol Waterway has a door to pass through. But the one near Punggol Beach is totally blocked. Cross the bushes on your left (if coming from Punggol Waterway track) or your right (if coming from Punggol Jetty) and use the makeshift crossing instead. Beware of the wide gaps at the bridge.

Till the next post, have a wonderful Sunday!

Tents are set up at Punggol Promenade, in front of Popeye, along the tracks at Nature Walk of Punggol Promenade all the way to Punggol Jetty. Newly planted, the plants look young and green. If you want to take a look, come on and drop by here.

Well, it rained all morning today so the tracks were rather muddy in places. Did not quite get to all the places I wanted to go.

Last Sunday, I ventured out further along the Nature Walk track along the Punggol Promenade opposite Coney Island. Had to stop at the second bridge because the bicycle gear got stuck and made a u-turn to push the bicycle. Managed to get some pictures before I left.

To recap, let’s have a look at the Punggol Promenade map again. Click to see a larger view.

The next section is the Punggol Point Walk track heading towards the Jetty Point and Punggol Beach.

I am not too sure at the moment if the opening of Punggol Waterway on 23 October 2011 coincides with the Punggol Promenade along this section. Have to wait and see.

Meanwhile, it is wednesday, mid-week. Hold on tight till the weekends!

Sunday’s blue sky with such dramatic clouds formation was really a sight to behold. Such a sudden change in weather from moody cloudy morning to such vivid colors. Do you know what those clouds means? Expect to see thunderstorm within the next 12 hours. Which proof true since on Monday morning, there was heavy rain fall.

Dramatic clouds over Punggol Waterway/Punggol Promenade at Serangoon Reservoir

This picture was taken with my Panasonic LX5 instead of the Nikon DSLR since the battery died. Still captured the vibrant color on that day. The little black dots on the top left corner are not dust spots. Birds are forever flying in and out of frame. Very jaw-dropping to see when the birds dive down into the water to catch food. I have a few other panoramic pictures which I will post later.

Also there are some pictures of the Nature Walk along the Punggol Promenade section. The path is rustic as intended. Due to the heavy rain, the path is very muddy. Again this section is not completed. Very tall heavy cranes and big lorries are at work here. Venture at your risk.

Till later, have a great day.

Sometime back in August 2011, I posted about Early Pictures of Punggol Waterway/Punggol Promenal Trail at Serangoon Reservoir.

Here is a bit of a recap to look at the progression of then and now.

Punggol Waterway at Serangoon Reservoir
Then

Looking down at Punggol Waterway

Take a closer look at the riverbed. The green plants had just been planted then. Now they are grown – looking lush and green.

Now

Green landscaping at Punggol Waterway

Seats and Plant Pots
Then

Seats and Pots for the Plants?

I suspected back then that these structures could be seats and pots. This turns out to be true as can be seen in this photo taken yesterday.

Now

Young Trees planted in pots/seats at Punggol Promenade, Serangoon Reservoir

Track at Punggol Promenade, Serangoon Reservoir leading to Punggol Beach
Then

Trail at Punggol Prominade heading to Punggol Beach?

Looked like a concrete cement track then. Now there are wooden planks for a boardwalk.

Now

Boardwalk at Punggol Promenade leading to Nature Walk and Punggol Beach

The Red Bridge at Nature Walk, Punggol Promenade
Then

Red Bridge along Punggol Promenade

No close-up picture of that red bridge before, except a far-away view taken from Lorong Halus Wetland, as seen here. The red rails are made of metal and face a small river, another stream of water leading to Serangoon Reservoir.

Now

Red Bridge at Nature Walk, Punggol Promenade

So what is the view on the left side of the bridge? This beautiful view.

The workers were doing more construction works beyond this point so this was where I stopped. Will have more updates later.

Serenity during the rain……

I have been photographing Lorong Halus Wetland for several months now. Seen many changes under different types of weather. When it rains, naturally everybody runs for shelter. Rain forces time to stand still at least for a while. All the plans for the next hour has to be put aside while waiting for mother nature to subside. While waiting it allows time for self reflection, melt the stress away and simply to stand still and stare.

I was caught in a thunderstorm last Friday. On the one day that I brought the tripod along for a sunrise photo shoot, there was no sun. I saw the dark clouds on the horizon at Pulau Ubin but thought there was still enough time to head back. I was too distracted trying to photograph the sea otters and did not notice the rolling thunder clouds coming from the opposite direction – the Serangoon Reservoir East Dam. Yes, there are sea otters! Sorry there are no good pictures to show but I will always cherish that sight. The sea otters consist of a family of about two adults and three babies. What a sight!

[Update : Found a Flickr picture of the sea otters here, taken by Swee Kin Lim : http://www.flickr.com/photos/limsweekin/5682927298/ . Another nice picture here from Sinkasa - http://sinkasa.blogspot.com/2011/05/lorong-halus.html. Very cool ]

Anyway, the point of this post is to show the other views of Lorong Halus Wetland during a rainstorm. There is serenity in the landscape during the rainstorm. During heavy rain, it may not be the best time to photograph then. Wait a while for the rain to subside then go out there and shoot. Cover the lens with a plastic bag for protection. The best time for bird watching is during a quiet lull in the rain. There are eagles, sparrows, herons, egrets flying about.

The next time it rains, don’t be in a hurry to rush off just yet. Take a few moments to soak in the serenity. Peace.

First notice : Punggol Promenade at Punggol is still not open. Disappointing to say the least. Uggh! I was so looking forward to cycle that way today. Nevertheless, going to the beach is never a waste of time.

There are a few interesting sights. Especially this one.

Tiny tugboat pulling a gigantic crane on boat

Who's stronger now?" Sail away sail away.....

Size does matters Or rather it matters not when you are on water. The small can be mighty :p.

A significant new sight at Pasir Gudang : a rig or platform with crane on it (or whatever the correct term is). This can be seen just slightly behind the crane in the first photo. Don’t think it was there before. Hmm, what is that for?

The last photo shows that Punggol Promenade at Punggol Beach is still barricaded and not opened yet. Does anybody knows when is the opening date?

A while back, I posted this article – Punggol Promenade : Punggol Point Walk to Riverside Walk. A bit more information and pictures as taken from Punggol Beach and Coney Island.

Punggol Promenade is still barricaded but a walk along the right side of Punggol Beach reveals some views of the area. Yesterday I was at Coney Island and the photos taken from there show another side view of the Punggol Point Walk to the Nature Walk

Here’s the map for easy reference. Click for larger view.

Though it can be a struggle in the morning, I prefer to photograph sunrise rather than sunset at Lor

Though it can be a struggle in the morning, I prefer to photograph sunrise rather than sunset at Lorong Halus Wetland. One reason – there is lesser crowd. Another – such a beautiful feeling to breathe in the cool air. The changing light is much more drastic in the early morning. Always good to have the camera ready.

Usually the sunrise can be seen from across the Serangoon Reservoir, on the trees edges and shoreline of the Lorong Halus Wetland.

This was taken about 6.50am.

Sunrise at Serangoon Reservoir - taken from Punggol Promenade Riverside Walk

It was still dark and the sky darken shortly after taking this picture. It was like a torchlight had been switched off. Five minutes later, this scene came about.

A deeper sunrise at Serangoon Reservoir

Like a light had been turned on. The red hue stayed a wee bit longer this time.

At another morning, the sunrise was more a golden yellow than the red hue.

Golden Sunrise at Lorong Halus Wetland

But yesterday, it was a different story and completely opposite sunrise condition in the morning.

Instead of the golden or red hue coming from the direction of Lorong Halus Wetland, it came from the opposite direction – Punggol Waterway. This was about 7:00am.

Sunrise at Punggol Waterway

Even after lingering for a while, couldn’t see the sun at all. Just golden red clouds and the greyish blue clouds.

It is always a surprise and delight to photograph the scenes in this area. I never get bored because every single day is a different story.

As they say – find the light! Happy shooting!

The barricade is still there today next to the red bridge to Lorong Halus Wetland. Looks like construction works are still on-going and should be finished before 9 September 2011 in time for the CSC Walk @Punggol Promenade.

Ventured over the green fence today to have a closer look. Here are the pictures. Sand and cranes dotted the landscape along the Nature Walk route of Punggol Promenade as viewed from the shoreline of Coney Island, next to the Serangoon Reservoir East Dam. At the end of the stones shoreline, the purple morning glory plants grow in abundance along the sandy shoreline. Mimosa plants also grow along edges of the shoreline.

I wonder if the Nature/Rustic Park that will be opened in Coney Island will be at the other end of the shoreline, maybe nearer towards the Jetty Point side.

Views along the way to Serangoon Reservoir East Dam and Coney Island

This post is for anyone who has not been here before and wish to come here. The starting point is Lorong Halus Wetland. For various links and photos on Lorong Halus Wetland and how to get there, click here.

Facing the red bridge at Serangoon Reservoir, you see this view of the entrance to Lorong Halus Wetland.

Entrance to Lorong Halus Wetland facing the red bridge

If coming from Pasir Ris Farmway 3, you get this view when entering Lorong Halus Wetland. Turn right at the end of the road and go to the front entrance as shown in the above picture.

Lorong Halus Wetland on the right

Follow the gravel path as shown below. Easy to see which path because the path in the opposite direction is barricaded. Follow the river bank. Wear steady shoes as the gravel path is rather uneven and gets muddy after the rain.

These pictures were taken over a period of several months from May to July 2011. Earlier, I had shown pictures of the Punggol Waterway near the Punggol Reservoir. This time around are pictures taken at the Serangoon Reservoir end, where the red bridge leads to Lorong Halus Wetland.

There are barricades at the Punggol Promenade next to the red bridge. So there is no close up pictures of the inner works progression just yet. Hopefully things are progressing up to speed. Even on Sundays, I see construction works going on.

The red streaks will appear from 7.15pm onwards. So don’t be in a hurry to leave just yet. Even after 7.30pm, the sunset lingers and twilight appears. On that particular day, there is almost an aurora like appearance to that sunset. Those two streaks in the above picture I am too sure what they are, certainly not dust. Could be birds streaking by. Those pictures are taken at the water’s edge. If you are there, don’t be surprise to hear sudden loud splashing sounds – there are fishes in the water.

Haven’t been there in August. Will see if there is time during the weekends. Enjoy the pictures!

In photography terms “Let There Be Light” is a popular catchphrase to illustrate the importance of light. As an example, below are three different photos taken at the same place – Punggol Promenade. The amount of light at different times of the day can really transform the same location.

Sunrise
This was about 7.30am. Mist shrouded the landscape and the sunrise left a golden glow on the grassland.

Sunrise at Punggol Promenade

Early Morning
About two hours later, the change in landscape. Grey clouds appeared and not long after, it started to rain.

Early Morning at Punggol Promenade

Late Evening
After the rain, late in the evening about 6pm, a beautiful sky with amazing clouds formation gave a contrasting landscape as compared to the morning scenery.

Late Evening at Punggol Promenade

The advantage to visit a place regularly at different times of the day, you get to see the various scenery and changing lights due to the weather. Try it at your home place and observe the various changing landscape.

Have a great weekend!

The supermoon refers to a combination of these two events occurring together; firstly, the point at which the Moon is closest in its orbit to the Earth and secondly, when the Earth, the Moon and the Sun are aligned.

The seemingly large moon glowed and lit up the beautiful and starry night sky. Its glow also managed to create an equally bright moon reflection in the waters of Punggol Promenade. Such a peaceful and tranquil night scenery photo in urban Singapore.

The Sunday Times today reported that DPM Teo Chee Hean helped launch the two new venues, Lorong Halus Wetlands and Punggol Promenade.

See below for the full story.

Nature-lovers get new haunt

By Daryl Chin

Keep a lookout for more bird species such as the painted snipe and whistling duck, and a greater biodiversity of flora and fauna, in Singapore’s north-east.

Avid bird-watchers and nature buffs will want to do so, now that the new Punggol Promenade and eco-friendly Lorong Halus Wetland are ready. The joint launch yesterday, attended by some 1,000 residents, was part of the Government’s efforts to spruce up the north-eastern area.

The promenade, costing $16.7 million and located on the Serangoon Reservoir bank, was built by the Urban Redevelopment Authority to let residents in the area enjoy recreational activities like jogging.

The first phase of construction has been completed and the next will include a sports complex, a driving range and other facilities.

And just 170m across the promenade – linked via a pedestrian bridge – is the Lorong Halus Wetland, a PUB initiative under its Active, Beautiful, Clean Waters project to give the country’s waterways and reservoirs a makeover.

Formerly part of a landfill, Lorong Halus has been transformed into an educational site. It is hoped that it will be a sanctuary for plants, birds and wildlife too.

Nature Society president Shawn Lum believes the two new projects are a step in the right direction. ‘Previously, this area was an isolated place, so it will be exciting to have residents nearby coming to interact with nature,’ he said.

Present at the launch yesterday were students from nearby schools who have adopted the wetland as part of their learning programmes.

Some, like Pawandeep Singh Sekhon, 14, even acted as guides for the day. ‘This is such a beautiful place, and I would like to come back as many times as I can and teach people more about it,’ said the Punggol Secondary student.

Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean, who officiated at the opening, said: ‘This goes to show that in Singapore, water is not only a resource, but also an environmental and economic asset.’

Mr Lum added: ‘The perennial challenge is getting people to visit and… at the same time not overwhelm the wildlife.’
