Nos escribe Carlos desde México y nos envía un link con el disco de su banda (la calidad del disco está en 96 kbps) diciéndonos lo siguiente: “Hola, Club de los Magios; Mi nombre es Carlos Ledezma y soy guitarrista y gritante de Estorbo, una banda de rock del Norte de México (Monclova Coahuila, para ser exactos). Desde hace tiempo soy un asiduo visitante de su espacio en Internet y la verdad me parece muy bueno que compartan tanta música tan buena sin ningún otro fin mas que el de difundir arte, ideología y el unir a gente con los mismos intereses.
El caso es que el Estorbo, que ya tiene 10 años dando tumbos por los sinuosos caminos del rock, acaba de grabar un nuevo disco llamado “Madura, Criatura” y seria un gusto y un honor que el disco fuera puesto en su espacio para descarga gratuita.
No se cual sea la mecánica para que el disco aparezca en los Magios, pero el disco ya esta en un servidor mediafire. Consta de 12 canciones que van del rock alternativo (lo que sea que eso signifique) al punk, pasando por algo de surf y garage. Bueno, eso creo, jeje. Coming right out of the home town of Keyshia Cole, Oakland California “The Younger Lovers” a punk band was born. The debut album “Newest Romantic” released in July of 2008 and still relevant today seeing that new video and T.V. promotion has surfaced which is nothing short of amazing from the front man Brontez Purnell. To me “ The Younger Lovers” have a very unique sound. Songs like “Danny” (auuhh my favorite) “Kiss Me On The Bus” and “Low Top Chucks And Skinny Jeans” screams out blast me through the speakers as well as play me on low and get your freak on ha! Band member Brontez aka Junx is also involved in along with Chunx, Hunx, and Punx making up the group “Gravy Train” and independently a cruising review magazine called “Fag School” available in LGBT bookstores around the world among other things. (from what I heard that magazine is a page turner) For this music niche to only be a side project of  Brontez us fans would love to experience more seeing that we can’t possibly get enough. I must admit Mr. Purnell is very easy on the eyes (*smerk*) and with the bands catchy lyrics you and I both know that they’ll be around for awhile. Special thanx to my friend Christopher Couture for putting me on and besure to get into the music and support!

Si antes el nombre del disco era Eve, ahora el que os presento es a su pareja, Adam. Adam y Eve son dos discos de Punk Rock de la banda berlinesa Shearer. Se ven que han querido un poco jugar con los nombres de los discos y las canciones que en él nos encontramos. Si en Eve hay una canción que se titula “Ordinary girl”, en Adam nos encontramos una que se llama “Ordinary man”. Además de otras canciones como “Drop that apple, bitch!” y “Is it you (Paradise Mix)” en las que las referencias a la “leyenda popular” del paraíso de Adán y Eva saltan a la vista. Shearer comparte Adam bajo esta licencia Creative Commons.

I had a couple of rehearsals this week with Vreny Van Elslande (bassist for Icky’s Ego) and drummer Jose Gonzalez. Both are incredibly talented and after only two rehearsals we’re ready to tear down the walls!

During my undergraduate days in the mid- and late 1990’s, when I was a disc jockey at WUSB-FM, the free-format radio station located on the campus of the State University of New York at Stony Brook, I had the intense pleasure of self-selecting scores of CD’s and records for my weekly program, Step Up! Days before each scheduled shift (3 AM – 6 AM at first, then afternoon drive-time at the tail-end of my tenure), I would go through the process of choosing songs, drawn from new releases in various formats, in a way that maximized time and enjoyment. Hours would pass in an area just off the main control room, where I would screen records that would, in time, serve as a memory-imprint in chord progressions and snare-drum shuffles, for my experience as a college student. Needless to say, it was an exciting time for me; the changes I was going through as a student, as an adult, and as a man, were met with concurrent revelations in albums such as Surrender to the Night (the fourth track of which, “Love Commander,” was the first song I every played on the air) by Trans Am; Bjork’s Homogenic; the undeniable modern-rock classic of OK Computer by Radiohead; and a number of others which remain solidly ensconced on my turntable and in my CD player/portable electronic apparatus. These were records that offered–besides points of discussion during late-night drinking sessions–solace and comfort, opportunities for camaraderie, and which thrilled beyond any kind of measure I can conceive. Those were the days, as the song goes.

Nearly fifteen years have passed since I last signed off the air (Until next time, be safe…), and though I now have far less free time, I still make it a point to listen to, and buy, new music. Late last year, on a whim and on a recommendation from who-knows-where, I bought The Chemistry of Common Life, by the Toronto-based hardcore band, Fucked Up. I was instantly knocked flat onto my back from the record’s melodic sense of fierceness, a pummeling mix of aggression and musical craftsmanship not typically heard in hardcore punk rock, a genre which relies upon tired formulas. I haven’t been this excited about a band, about songs, about music in general, in years. In fact, I haven’t been so moved to emotion since I once played Scream, Dracula, Scream! by Rocket from the Crypt for what seemed like days on end. While Scream! and Fucked Up’s latest full-length share little in terms of their approach–Rocket from the Crypt, now defunct, punctuated its songs via a vibrant horn section–they both elicit in me a passion and a joy for living not felt since my days as a teenager, when life was little more than exams and falling in love. Fucked Up’s music, filled with the intensity of youth, reminds me that age is but a marker in a continuum that need not end in obsolescence and frailty, and which serves to remind that my next favorite band is waiting to be heard.  

It all makes me want to sit behind a broadcasting console at a radio station, if only for one more time…

If you are prodding, looking, searching and asking around for a really great and cool Christmas album to buy, your search is over. Joey Ramone Christmas Spirit… In My House is a true Punk Rock gem. The late and legendary Joey Ramone has always captivated me with his trademark Punk Rock vocals. He had such an easy going delivery with his voice, yet it also contained the required toughness, swagger and Punk attitude that came out so naturally for Joey. Don’t Worry About Me, Spirit In My House and What A Wonderful World are three Punk Rock classics from Joey Ramone’s solo work. What A Wonderful World is covered here with remarkable, inspired spirit that flows over you like a wave of Punk Rock joy. These three songs can be enjoyed all year long, heck, this EP is so good I will listen to these Christmas songs all year long too! After I here Christmas (Baby Please Come Home), I feel like I never want to hear another vocalist sing this song again, Joey Ramone sings it that incredible, for me.

Merry Christmas (I Don’t Want To Fight Tonight) is Joey Ramone singing a ballad while not straying away from his trademark vocals, I get a real kick out of this song with it’s 1950’s Rock and Roll vibe happening. This song isn’t sappy either. Spirit In My House is the hardest song on this EP, the grooves are strong and the beat is contagious. Ronnie Spector lends her vocals on Christmas (Baby Please Come Home), while the ever legendary Marky Ramone is a special guest on What A Wonderful World. I am going to listen to this EP probably constantly throughout this holiday season, I am looking forward to each listen. I absolutely cannot exhaust myself from hearing these songs limitless times. All fans of the Ramones and Punk Rock need to own this EP. Fans of all other Rock genres need to lend an ear to what Joey Ramone created here and add this brilliant work to their Christmas music collection and enjoy it all year long too.

Based on the excited reaction my ten year old twin daughters showed, as they listened to this Joey Ramone EP today, it is safe to say his Punk/Rock and Roll legacy will live on for generations to come. I have never seen my daughters dance around and get as happy to music, like this, since they listened to Misfits Project 1950! It was a terrific sight to see, coupled with the feeling of knowing my daughters love some of the music I listen to as well.

* Christmas Spirit… In My House was released on December 10, 2002, on the label Sanctuary (USA).

* Don’t Worry About Me, Spirit In My House and What A Wonderful World are also on the Joey Ramone studio album – Don’t Worry About Me, (released on February 19, 2002).

* What A Wonderful World - was written by Bob Thiele and George David Weiss. The first recording was sung by the timeless legend – Louis Armstrong, being released in 1968 as a single.

So before going to bed, I was checking for something cool…and damn…here it was…

P.S. My personal opinion is that The Offspring doesn’t have the power like before…now they are like, I don’t know, maybe their sound losted his power – to be unique, to be diffrent…but we must  not forget that THIS IS OFFSPRING…And Americana is one of the best albums ever…

THE OFFSPRING – STUFF IS MESSED UP

I’d like to start off by stating that I absolutely love the Damned. They have given me a great deal of pleasure over the years, and some of my fondest memories are of hearing Damned, Damned, Damned for the first time and seeing them play live at the Locarno in  Portsmouth, supported by the Anti Nowhere League.

I managed to catch them at Rebellion earlier in the year, and on Wednesday I went to see them, although they were support to Motorhead. (Honorable mention to Girlschool, also on the bill, with Blitzkriegs Jax on guitar). They opened with New Rose and from that moment I knew I was going to be dissapointed. To be fair to them the crowd seemed to really love them, and maybe I’m still living in the past, but I wanted New Rose to sound like New Rose – the New Rose – the very first vinyl pressing of a Punk song ever…a piece of history. Musically it was the same, vocally it could have been Whitney Houston.

Maybe Dave Vanian is bored with singing the same old stuff for 30 years and he want to put some variety in his life…and I think for that its understandable…but I paid £25 to hear the Damned as I wanted to hear them, not what I got at all.

The week before I managed to catch the Specials in Brighton, another 30 year tour and another band on the nostalgia bandwagon….but what a band, what a show and what a difference. Every song was sung as I remembered it being, the whole blace was bouncing and I left through the pouring rain with a smile on my face. It was what I’d paid for, my memories, my songs and my experiences brought back for a few hours.

And Donny Osmond? I watched an interview with him once where he told the story of singing Puppy Love in a rock style cos he was bored with it. Then one day a fan asked him why he ruined their memory of the song. It affected him and he now sings songs in the way he sold them. Please take note Mr Vanian…to me and lots like me, you are a hero. The Damned are one of the greatest bands ever and I for one would like to hear New Rose as it was recorded by the Damned, not a night club singer.

De malas prontas para o segundo giro pelo Brasil, os californianos a princípio fariam apenas um show em São Paulo (no dia 06/12, no Hangar 110), mas Mr. Loobkoff revela que José dos Campos e Rio de Janeiro também terão a oportunidade de vê-los ao vivo — por enquanto no MySpace deles só consta a do Rio, dia 10/12!

Queria começar falando da turnê que vocês fizeram por aqui em 2002, mas é impossível não lembrar de uma coisa em particular. Eu te entrevistei por e-mail antes de virem pra cá e na época eu escrevia para um jornal grande daqui… Enfim, quando vi o texto publicado tomei um susto, o editor não pensou duas vezes e o título da matéria foi: “Californianos trazem emocore ao Brasil”…
[Risos] Isso provavelmente foi na época em que a palavra “emocore” era bastante popular e quem sabe seu editor achou que as pessoas teriam mais interesse em ler a matéria. É, a gente não grita e não faz peripécias com as guitarras jogando elas para o alto ou usa maquiagem… então espero que não tenhamos decepcionado ninguém.

Então, como você definiria o som do Samiam para uma pessoa que nunca o ouviu antes?
Essa pergunta é bastante comum quando dou entrevistas. Na verdade, eu nunca falo para as pessoas que conheço ou com quem trabalho que já tive uma banda. E se eles descobrem e perguntam, geralmente respondo “rock… mais ou menos como Foo Fighters ou Green Day”. Eu imagino que se elas nunca ouviram falar do Samiam, então elas não têm interesse ou não sabem muito sobre punk rock. Foo Fighters e Green Day são os pontos de referência mais próximos para elas. Se eu dissesse “nossa banda é mais ou menos como Lemonheads com Bad Brains ou Descendents”, elas diriam “nunca ouvi falar dessas bandas” [risos].
Na verdade eu detesto quando amigos me apresentam para as pessoas dizendo que eu fazia parte de uma banda… para mim é embaraçoso. Geralmente a pessoa pergunta “qual é o nome da sua banda? Ah, nunca ouvi falar…” [risos].

Voltando à tour de 2002, quais são suas lembranças dela?
Nos divertimos tanto… aquela turnê nos levou a vários lugares do Brasil e vimos muitas coisas e conhecemos tanta gente. No meio da turnê eu fiquei muito doente, não comi ou dormi por três dias. Foi horrível. Quando melhorei eu senti como se o peso do mundo tivesse sido tirado das minhas costas, porque ficar assim tão doente em turnê é difícil demais. Eu dormia no chão do ônibus, nos pés de todo mundo, suando como um louco e ao mesmo tempo congelando. E aí eu precisava tocar quando mal conseguia parar em pé. Mas a melhor coisa foi conhecer muitas pessoas legais. Estamos muito ansiosos para ver muitas delas novamente. Bem, com sorte, se elas ainda se interessam e vêm aos shows. Quando você faz parte de uma banda há tanto tempo, é engraçado como as pessoas param de vir aos shows… Elas podem vir aos shows ano após ano, mas em determinado momento elas se casam ou arranjam um bom emprego, e aí perdem o interesse nessa bobagem de punk rock [risos].

Da outra vez vocês vieram para cerca de 10 shows e desta vez teremos uma única apresentação. Por que isso? As pessoas de fora de São Paulo tão achando que o Samiam não gostou delas… Ok, tô brincando!
Originalmente seria apenas São Paulo, mas agora vamos tocar em São José dos Campos e no Rio também. Eu não sei qual a explicação para menos shows, talvez porque vamos tocar no Chile e Argentina dessa vez, então foi uma questão de tempo e também dos compromissos dos membros da banda. Eu adoraria voltar a todas cidades… a decisão não foi da banda. Em São José dos Campos vamos tocar com o Dead Fish, estou muito ansioso para vê-los, vai ser muito legal! Eu gostaria que pudéssemos tocar em Santos com o Garage Fuzz de novo, é uma pena!

O Samiam e o Jawbreaker foram citados no romance Eeeee Eee Eeee (2007), de Tao Lin. Em tempos de crise fonográfica e artistas/músicas tão ruins, acha que foi uma forma de valorização do trabalho de vocês?
Eu nunca conheci Tao Lin pessoalmente, mas trocamos e-mails porque ele queria permissão para publicar algumas de nossas letras. Parece ser um cara legal. É um bom escritor também. Acho que ele é simplesmente uma pessoa que gosta de nossas bandas, então é sempre legal saber de alguém que aprecia o que fazemos. Eu não sei quanto a “valorizar nosso trabalho”, isso soa como se nós nos levássemos muito a sério. O Samiam não é um “trabalho” e nós definitivamente sabemos que há um milhão de bandas por aí, não somos nada de muito especial. Mas é legal. O Jawbreaker é mencionado em um livro de um escritor famoso chamado Dennis Cooper, da década de 90… Eu fiquei extremamente impressionado com aquilo quando o li. Na verdade fiquei chocado e surpreso. O livro era muito estranho, mais ou menos como uma história de amor através dos olhos de um pedófilo… Um homem mais velho e um garoto adolescente… [risos] definitivamente algo que a maioria das pessoas não conseguiria suportar. Era muito estranho… Pensando nisso agora, não faço ideia de por que comecei a lê-lo. Deve ter sido porque alguém me recomendou!

Aproveitando, o Samiam tem cerca de duas décadas e “somente” sete discos, sendo o mais recente de 2006. É impressão minha ou vocês gravam pouco? Já existem planos para um novo álbum?
Pra dizer a verdade, lançamos seis discos em 11 anos, de 1989 a 2000. Não é nada mau. E aí, basicamente, a banda acabou… ou parou de fazer turnês ou gravar seriamente. Nos últimos nove anos fizemos uma turnê ou outra por ano, mas não trabalhamos a banda como nos anos 90. Em 2006, tentamos fazer um sétimo disco, mas foi um fiasco total, alguns de nós brigávamos muito e acabamos fazendo um disco abaixo dos padrões, que me decepcionou muito. As músicas são muito boas, mas o som é horrível. Basicamente há uma divisão na banda, onde uma pessoa quer que o Samiam se torne algo totalmente diferente, mais thrash e com o som fodido, e eu quero que o Samiam soe como Samiam. Para mim, nossas gravações devem ser bastante nítidas, claras e poderosas. Isso era basicamente o motivo das brigas.
Recentemente falamos sobre fazer um disco novo… e eu escrevi e gravei (de forma caseira) nove faixas que acho que seriam ótimas canções do Samiam… mas realmente precisamos dar um jeito na tensão dentro da banda com relação às nossas intenções antes de nos comprometermos a fazer um disco novo. Fazer outro álbum de que eu não tivesse orgulho é algo que partiria meu coração. Ainda assim acho que poderíamos realmente nos redimir com um disco novo “quebrando tudo” em 2010. Vamos ter que esperar para ver!

Quais seriam seus três discos prediletos atualmente?
Isso muda sempre, mas nesse momento eu diria que amo o Where You Been, do Dinosaur Jr., How It Works, do Bodyjar e o álbum branco dos Beatles.

E as três maiores farsas da música mundial de hoje?
Eu não presto muita atenção no cenário musical, mas sempre há os grandes pop stars que são bobos e fazem algo que atraia as massas para ganharem dinheiro sem nenhuma consideração pela arte ou talento. É simplesmente assim que funciona. Uma coisa que tento nunca fazer é escolher determinadas bandas ou artistas e dizer que são horríveis. Claro, eu não gosto de Jonas Brothers ou do Kanye West, mas eles são importantes para muitas pessoas… Então quem sou eu para dizer qualquer coisa negativa sobre eles?! Eu só penso [risos]. Claro, eu acabo de escolher os Jonas Brothers e o Kanye West, então estou sendo um hipócrita… que se foda: eu os odeio! [risos].

Você é designer gráfico, ainda tem feito trabalhos para bandas?
Sim, mas há 10 anos eu fazia umas duas capas de disco por mês, e agora, com a indústria fonográfica na merda, faço uma a cada dois meses. É bastante triste, mas não há dinheiro na música, então não há trabalho. A maioria das bandas tem um amigo que cuida disso para eles de graça. Recentemente fiz a arte do último Strung Out [Agents of the Underground, Fat Wreck Chords, 2009] e estou trabalhando com algo para o Piebald… E fiz uma caixa para o aniversário de 15 anos da Hopeless Records, mas é isso, agora a maior parte da minha clientela não faz parte da indústria fonográfica.

Aliás, ainda sobre esse assunto, fiquei sabendo que recentemente rolaram uns “art shows” e, inclusive, com a participação de nomes como H.R. (Bad Brains), Walter Schreifels (Gorilla Biscuits, Rival Schools), Jonah Matranga (Far, Gratitude), Steve Soto (Agent Orange, Adolescents) e Jeff Pezzati (Naked Raygun, Big Black). Como eram esses eventos e como foi reunir esse time de peso?
Isso foi no final de semana passado e foi muito divertido. Mas eu era apenas um dos artistas, não organizei nada… um cara chamado Joe Nelson [The Killing Flame, ex-Ignite] organizou tudo, trouxe os artistas até Los Angeles. Foi um evento beneficente para duas organizações de caridade, então foi muito legal. O H.R. foi muito interessante, ele é um velho estranho hoje. Parece ser legal e tranquilo, mas meio louco. O Walter foi incrível, ele tem tanta personalidade no palco… Eu não sou gay… mas aquele cara é muito charmoso! É melhor você não levar sua namorada ao show dele [risos]. Pezzati e Soto foram muito legais também. Foi muito legal… e eu vendi três peças também!

Como designer gráfico, como você vê a expansão que essa área teve? Concorda que, por exemplo, anos atrás ninguém diria que a street art e o graffiti se tornariam tão populares. Nem mesmo que a imagem mais forte usada por um candidato à presidência nos EUA seria assinada por um “artista que veio das ruas” – no caso, Shepard Fairey.
Eu não sou mesmo o tipo de artista que Shepard Fairey, então eu não quero parecer um cara metido. Mas falando como um fã de arte, eu acho legal que essa cena exista, que você possa ir a uma exposição onde Barry McGee ou Shepard estão expondo e há centenas de pessoas e muito entusiasmo. E é muito legal que caras como o Farofa, do Garage Fuzz, possam ser convidados para mostrarem sua arte em outros países. É maravilhoso. Mesmo se ele tenha vindo à Los Angeles no ano passado e não tenha entrado em contato comigo… eu só fiquei sabendo depois. Filho da puta! [risos]. E quanto à arte do Obama, Shepard é um grande artista. Antes disso ele fez capas para o Led Zeppelin e para o Smashing Pumpkins e outras coisas enormes, não é como se ele tivesse sido “descoberto” com o lance do Obama… Bem, eu acho que então para o público mainstream, talvez, então eu não fiquei exatamente surpreso. Eu acho que ele arranjou alguns problemas por ter usado uma foto sem autorização para aquele poster… que merda.

Pra finalizar, obrigado pela entrevista, quais são as expectativas para o show no Brasil. Algum recado aos brasileiros?
Minha única expectativa é me divertir. Não há rios de dinheiro e não estamos divulgando um disco ou coisa do tipo. Eu espero poder compartilhar algumas músicas com um público entusiasmado! Encontrar alguns velhos amigos e fazer novos. É sempre divertido estar em uma cidade legal tão longe de casa… São Paulo ou Rio ou São José, é legal. Estou sempre em Los Angeles, pode se tornar algo repetitivo [risos]. Espero que alguns de seus leitores brasileiros que leiam essa entrevista decidam ir até o show, vai saber quando ou se vamos voltar um dia! Obrigado!

Boo: Dracula Boots

I picked up the latest record from Kid Congo Powers & The Pink Monkey Birds after reading an LA Weekly article a few weeks back about the eclectic roster on In The Red Records. I also heard Mike Watt talking about him on the Watt From Pedro Radio Show…I didn’t know that “The Kid” aka Brian Tristan had at one point played guitar with The Cramps, Gun Club and Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds. Kewl.

Kid Congo Power’s ”Dracula Boots“ is a potpourri of dirty junkie riffs soaked in reverb and, like The Cramps, and it’s a trippy, gritty listening experience. It’s like watching a film noir flick on acid while sharing a bowl of popcorn with the creature from the black lagoon.

Kid Congo’s backstreet psychedelic boogie is just the antispectic needed to cure the music world’s Gaga-pop staff infections. I dig it. Here’s “Rare as the Yeti.”

Ieri sera ho assistito a un concerto dei Diaframma. Ovvero, Federico Fiumani. Federico Fiumani è un monumento suonante alla coerenza artistica e all’onestà intellettuale. Uno dei pochi in Italia a saper scrivere canzoni d’amore senza cedere alla banalità o al ridicolo. Uno che, a quasi cinquant’anni, continua imperterrito a sgolarsi (con la sua voce rotta dalla mancanza di voce) in pessimi sottoscala che puzzano di stantio. Uno che non ha sfondato mai e quindi ha deciso che tanto valeva non vendersi. Uno che non parla di politica o sociale (o forse sì, visto che l’amore include tutto) ma rimane nel tempo perfettamente credibile. Uno che regala emozioni con suoni duri, abrasivi, elementari. Uno di cui c’è più che mai bisogno. Federico Fiumani è il motivo per cui chiunque covi un’aspirazione artistica non deve far altro che ghermirla e trascinarsela dietro. Contro tutto. Contro tutti. Qualsiasi cosa succeda.
E andatevi a sentire ‘Tre lacrime’, versione ‘live’ moderna, meno dark e più punk-rock. Da brividi.

I love Fucked Up. Not just because I get to type their name which always produces an admittedly lame thrill, I mean, how often do you really get to write Fucked Up in polite publishing? I love Fucked Up because they adhere to a form of thrashing, screaming punk rock that so few people do well anymore. I love indie music as much as the next blogginghead but after a while you want to kick off your Topsiders, leave the kefiya at home and kick out some serious jams. Their songs are pure punk but they’re catchy and well made, with surprisingly dynamic structures filled with cascading melodies, rhythmic gymnastics and rich punk texture. Like a French chef in a spiked leather jacket. Next month Matador will release a singles collection called ‘Couple Tracks: Singles 2002-2008′ that will include two discs of rarities, split into ‘The Hard Stuff’ and ‘The Fun Stuff’.

Fucked Up – Neat Parts

It came as a surprise to me when I realised, sifting through our reviews one fine day, we hadn’t done a single Punk band! I’ve only heard a little bit of it, and Baba T is a huge fan of the Punk aesthetic and ethic, so I set out to review the Pistols, and their only album ever.

The Pistols aren’t the first punk rock band, but they pulled massively in two different directions, compared to the Ramones. Firstly, they distilled all the lyrics down to the pure anarchist manifesto that is the sum of the lyrics of this album. Secondly, they added a bit more dynamics to the music and a little bit more technical proficiency in their instrumentalists. Only a bit. Except for Sid Vicious, of course, who couldn’t really play bass, yet is surely one of the greatest bassists of all time, if only for sheer attitude.

Doesn't get 'Punker' than this

No matter, Glen Matlock recorded these studio lines. They are just OK. As is the guitar playing(whoa, guitar solos!). As is the drumming. They are more proficient than the Ramones, but The Ramones really were about all four members there, whereas The Pistols reek of Johnny Rotten + 3 guys playing Punk Rock. Great as the Pistols are, I prefer The Ramones any day of the week.

The one thing that really strikes you about the Pistols though, is Johnny Rotten’s ’singing’. He sounds like he is barely tolerant of the establishment and is doing them a huge favour by pointing out that which is bleeding obvious to him. Brilliant.

I know the Sex Pistols were massively influential, but frankly I’m not sure how much their music had to do it. We all know about Malcolm Mclaren, who did a fantastic (if opportunistic) job of promoting the Sex Pistols as bonafide outlaws. And then there is Sid Vicious and that hooker chick he was dating whose name escapes me. See what I mean? Most of the stuff related to the Pistols that got a lot of attention is their behaviour than their music. I mean, the songs themselves aren’t too consistent. Of course, ‘God Save the Queen’ is an absolutely fantastic. ‘EMI’ is great too. But the real Anarchist manifesto here is ‘Anarchy in the UK’. Brilliant. But the other songs? I’m afraid they’re not too hot.

Punk Rock is music boiled down to its bare bones in all its glory. And this here is the only sort of a politics that bare-bones music could adjust itself to: anarchy. It’s fantastic as far as the big perspective is taken, looking at the Pistols as a response to stuffy middle class comfort. Despite the massive influence this album has had, I wish it had had a couple of other great songs. Four out of twelve isn’t enough. This doesn’t quite sound right.

Jeff Pezzati  (Naked Raygun, Big Black) alla voce, e J Robbins (Jawbox, Burning Airlines) in cabina di regia, mettono assieme un bel dischetto all’insegna  di un punk rock melodico nella miglior tradizione “Chigago”: ricco di sfumature post e armonie vocali.

Non resta altro che  unirsi ai cori. . . “Whoaaa heyyy hooo”

Highway 55:ssä palataan jälleen arkirytmiin.

HorrorBeach Part II -instrumentaali tuo juuri sopivalla hetkellä kaivattua vaihtelua. Sen jälkeen koittaa vielä kolme menopalaa. Niistä päätösraita Private Hall Of Shame on sytyttävin.

Levyn soundit on hyvät. Pystybassossa on vaan aina niin tukevan makoisa soundi.

Kiss Kiss Kill Kill sopii hyvin avuksi, kun haluat lisää vauhtia lenkille tai triplata siivoustehosi.

HorrorPops voisi olla tiukkaakin tiukempi kokemus jossain pienessä, intiimissä täyteenahdetussa kellarissa, jossa olut läikkyisi ja hiki lentäisi!

Este año para The Offspring no es uno cualquiera. Cumplen su aniversario. Y es que hacen un cuarto de siglo en el mundo de la música. Hace poco dieron una entrevista, haciendo una recopilación de los 25 años de su trayectoria en el mundo de la música.  Hacen un resumen de sus mejores años, aquellos momentos en el que se convirtieron junto a otros grandes referentes de la música del punk-rock como Green Day, en la ola musical del momento. Ya con la publicación de su primer disco Smash en 1994, se hicieron con disco independiente más vendido en toda la historia. Han trabajado con varias compañías pero siempre cosechando los mismo éxitos. Lo que no se duda, es que para ellos, a pesar del transcurso de los años, no les afecta en absoluto. Siguen con el mismo espíritu, las mismas ganas y con los mismo sueños. Son, como Noodles dice “grandes chavales con ganas de diversión”.

A continuación le adjuntamos la entrevista que concedieron a la Vanguardia el pasado agosto:

-El single de vuestro último álbum, Stuff is messed up [traducible por algo así como "la cosa está jodida"], tiene un mensaje muy crítico. ¿Por qué?
-¡Es que la cosa está jodida! Tenemos dos guerras en marcha, la economía está en crisis, hemos tenido huracanes y tsunamis que han destruido lugares y parece que la gente no ha sabido como reaccionar de modo que se pudieran salvar vidas. A todo esto se suma la traición de los medios de comunicación. Britney Spears se afeita la cabeza y se pasan una semana informando. Es de locos.

-¿De quién es la responsabilidad?
-Reconozco que yo también soy culpable, porque veo las cadenas de 24 horas de noticias y quiero saber si realmente Michael Jackson es el padre de esos dos niños. Pero es que hay gente que se pasa todo el rato gritando sobre esto. Vale, hablemos de ello, pero sigamos adelante.

-¿Sigue siendo California un buen lugar para comenzar una banda?
-Creo que sí. Nosotros crecimos en el condado de Orange, un lugar muy conservador, mientras que Los Ángeles es mucho más liberal. Nosotros nos liberamos contra ese conservadurismo. Todavía hay clubs donde tocan las bandas, como el club Chain Reaction, que se ha convertido en algo parecido al Gilman Street de Berkeley. Todavía hay un montón de lugares donde tocar.

-¿Cómo nació The Offspring?
-En el garaje de Dexter [líder y cantante de la banda]. También tocamos un par de veces en mi sala de estar, pero la mayoría de las veces íbamos a casa de Greg. Íbamos los viernes por la tarde con un puñado de cervezas hasta que venía la policía y nos obligaba a callar.

-Y sacasteis un disco…
-Hicimos mil copias del primer álbum y al final tuvimos que regalarlas a nuestros amigos.

-¿Érais unos rebeldes?
-Entonces ya pensábamos que las cosas estaban bastante jodidas. El pop rock cambió cosas… O quizás sólo gritábamos sobre esos cambios, sobre lo que estaba jodido y esas cosas. Nos sentíamos totalmente marginados, sin poder para cambiar nuestras vidas en esa parte tan conservadora del país. Pero lo hicimos, nos rebelamos contra todo ello.

-Formasteis parte de todo un movimiento.
-No sé si realmente fuimos parte de ello. Actuamos con un puñado de bandas de hardcore, pero nosotros éramos un poco distinto, un poco más melódicos. Nos encantaban los Dead Kennedys cuando escribían canciones como Holidays in Cambodia o California über alles.

-¿Cómo ha cambiado vuestra música desde entonces?
-Cuanto más tocamos, más nos gusta explorar distintas áreas musicales para mantener la diversión y la frescura. Al mismo tiempo, intentamos mantener lo bueno de nuestra banda, que es la energía, para ponerla en diferentes tipos de música.

-¿Cómo se puede mantener el espíritu anti-sistema después de vender millones de discos a través de una multinacional?
-No lo sé. Lo que hacemos es seguir gritando y dar alaridos. Es distinto que ir a trabajar a un banco o para un abogado. Salir cada noche al escenario y no estar en una oficina nos mantiene jóvenes.

-¿Seguís siendo independientes pese a trabajar para una filial de Sony?
-Sí, totalmente. Nunca nos han dicho que cambiáramos nada de lo que hemos hecho. Nunca ¿sabes? Las cosas podrían volver a cambiar porque ya no se venden discos y a las discográficas no les van bien las cosas, así que podrían volverse más cuidadosas con lo que sacan al mercado. O también puede ser que pase a importarles todo una mierda… ¡Jajaja!

-¿Las grandes discográficas también necesitan bandas independientes?
-Cuando nosotros aparecimos, Nirvana se acababa de romper. Nirvana era algo totalmente distinto al resto de la música producida masiva y corporativamente. Entonces se hacía básicamente pop, hasta que llegó Nirvana y lo cambió todo. Las radios nunca lo vieron porque pensaban que Nirvana nunca llegaría a ningún sitio. Hasta que un día un tío apostó por ellos. Y entonces empezaron a salir todas estas bandas y el punk resurgió.

-¿Visteis que ahí también había negocio?
-Las compañías conseguían cada vez menos intentando crear bandas, un método del que salen grupos como 98 degrees y todas esas bandas de chicos. Esto sigue existiendo, pero las discográficas también tienen que escuchar a las bandas que ya están haciendo dinero. Cuando nosotros firmamos con Sony teníamos 3 discos y habíamos vendido 12 o 13 millones de discos, así que no iban a venir y decirnos qué teníamos que hacer.

-¿Todavía hacéis lo que queréis?
-Sí. La única vez que hemos tenido problemas con la discográfica es cuando quisimos poner nuestro disco en nuestra web para que se lo descargaran los fans. Visto con perspectiva, lo entiendo. Ahora no se venden discos y los amigos se los pasan unos a otros, pero así es el mundo.

-Mucha gente piensa que los discos eran demasiado caros y que el dinero se había a la promoción de estrellas sin calidades musicales. ¿Qué opinas?
-Sí, los CDs claro que eran demasiado caros. Su producción no es tan costosa y ahora han bajado un montón. Así que, sí, creo que fueron muy lentos en enterarse de qué iba la cosa en Internet. Sólo intentaron combatirlo, combatirlo y combatirlo… Cuando, en realidad, deberían de haber estado intentando descubrir como hacer que funcionara a su favor.

-¿Están aprendiendo a través plataformas como iTunes?
-Sí, quizás poco y tarde. Itunes es un gran invento, pero yo crecí gastándome todo mi dinero en discos. Creo que la música tiene valor.

-¿Culpáis a la gente que se descarga música por internet?
-No, no lo hago. Es demasiado fácil. Yo también grababa casetes para mis amigos y sólo compraba un disco cuando me gustaba.

-¿Cómo escuchas música?
-Normalmente la descargo gratuitamente en mi ordenador… ¡¡Jajaja!! Tengo algo parecido al iPod, que se llamar Request y lo tengo conectado el iTunes de mi ordenador.

-En su momento os pronunciasteis a favor de Napster. ¿Seguís apoyando las actuales plataformas de intercambio de archivos?
-¿Qué se supone que tengo que hacer? ¿No estar de acuerdo? O descubres como hacer que Internet funcione a tu favor o nadas a contracorriente y no vas a llegar a ningún lado. No culpo a los niños y a los fans por conseguir música gratis. Los fans mayores sí comprarán, pero por qué iban a hacerlo los más jóvenes si pueden conseguirlo en Internet.

-Vuestro público es muy joven…
-Sí, eso mola.

-¿Cómo lo conseguís?
-No tengo ni idea. Sólo se necesitan un par de canciones para conseguir que los chavales vuelvan a estar interesados. Sólo intentamos hacer las mejores canciones que podemos. Hacer lo que hacemos para vivir y divertirnos nos mantiene jóvenes.

-¿Así que, aunque empezasteis hace 25 años, todavía veis al público dando saltos en vuestros conciertos?
-Sí, claro. Y yo también los doy. Todavía no voy en caminador… ¡Jajaja!

I’m very thankful for being introduced to this album by The Everly Brothers, (Don and Phil Everly), as a child. My mother had this album and it was my first introduction to the amazing world of Rock and Roll. This 1958 album was a true enjoyment and will forever be an unreal lifetime memory.

I’m extra thankful for being alive to be thankful for all of the above.
